Hillary raises money in SF

Posted: Saturday, February 02, 2008 12:18 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- Hillary Clinton ended a swing through delegate-rich California with a low-dollar fundraiser at the 2,200-seat Orpheum Theatre here last night. The tickets for the event cost $50, but people were free to give more.

Clinton spoke about the importance of community. "That's what I want America to be again, to be a community where we each are doing our part to lift each other up, to see each other, to hear each other," she told the crowd.

She said she wanted her presidency to be about the "trend lines", what is really happening in America and in people's lives and alluded to the historic nature of her and Barack Obama's candidacies by saying the debate last night showed every child in America that they could be anything they want to be.

As she has in several recent speeches and as she did in the debate Thursday night, Clinton talked about having been endorsed by Iraq War critics in Congress. "I am so proud that I have been endorsed by leading members of the 'Out of Iraq' caucus now; congressional members like Lynn Woolsey and Maxine Waters and Jim McGovern and others who have said that they believe in me and know that I can make the difficult decisions to begin withdrawing our troops," she said.

Mayors Ron Dellums (Oakland), Gavin Newsom (San Francisco), Antonio Villaraigosa (Los Angeles), speaker of the California State Assembly Fabian Nunez, activist Dolores Huerta and actors Mary Steenburgen and Ted Danson were among the featured guests.

While the people chosen to introduce Clinton at her events often give speeches that seem longer than necessary, overly rehearsed and sound like the Cliff's Notes version of the senator's stump speech, the messages delivered last sounded like they came from the heart.

Dellums spoke powerfully about why he supported Clinton, saying he had come to his decision after extensive research on the candidates' ideas about how to help America's urban centers. "I read a quote that was so powerful that it brought tears to my eyes and I went into my bedroom and I said to my wife, 'Listen to this quote.' The quote said, 'Our continued acceptance of racial disparities in health care, in education and in economics is intolerable, unacceptable and un-American. What a powerful statement," he said. "That statement was made by Sen. Clinton."

Newsom talked about the need to not just support the New York senator, but to show up at the polls Tuesday. Danson called Clinton a "beautiful woman" that he wanted to represent him around the world. Steenburgen referred to Clinton as an icon and said she had been inspired by watching the senator be a mother, a daughter, a wife, First Lady and senator. She said that Clinton was a "world-class listener" and talked about what she was "really like."

"Her belly laugh is more raucous and dirty than mine and that's saying something and she loves, loves, loves it when you make her laugh," she said. "She does get tired and sad and hurt, but she's more able to pick herself up and dust herself off and start all over again than anybody else I know."

Steenburgen went on to list the Republicans Clinton had worked with, noting that Strom Thurmond even brought her candy bars "for crying out loud."

The audience was overwhelmingly white and while most seats were filled, there were a few dozen empty ones in the upper balcony (there were two balconies).

HRC -- "she wanted her presidency to be about the "trend lines""

Umm, sweety, the trend lines are for Obama, not you.
Clinton voted for the war twice: once in Iraq and once for the resolution in Iran.  No amount of spin she, her husband, or her mayoral cronies can put on it changes the facts.  Nor can her husband's mistruths about Senator Obama's record on the war change the fact that he has been against it from the beginning.  Anything other than those cold hard facts is, to borrow Senator Clinton's phrase, "rhetoric, not reality."
HILLARY CLINTON WILL BE THE FIRST WOMEN PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES AND ONE OF THE GREATEST LEADERS WE HAVE EVER HAD. NOW COME SEE WHY ? hillaryclinton.com
Z... can you please pass what ever you are smoking !!!! HRC will not be the next Pres. She does not stand a chance.  The Repubs will unite against her.  That is the only way that they can unite their party.  McCain would pull all of the independents and of course the conservatives.  That would only leave the hardcore Dems for HRC.
I AM VOTING FOR CLINTON, SHE HAS SUBSTANCE AND NOT JUST FLUFF.  HAVE YOU WORKED IN AN OFFICE WHERE THE GUY HAS BIG WORDS AND DOES NOT WORK.  CLINTON HAS A RECORD OF CHANGE - OUR CHILDREN THANK HER!
Hillary is going to win California.  She will hold a massive advantage in mail-in voters, which represent 40%+ of California ballots.  If Senator Obama pulls within double digits here and manages to grab 40-45% of CA delegates, that will be a huge upset.
That guy just isn't ready. Tell him to try again when he grows up.    For now, who can doubt Hillary's ability. She is primed, professional and perfect for the job..  If I had the bucks, they would all be hers to help spread the word.   Hail to this great lady!
I HAVE SEEN MSNBC BLATENT ATTEMPT TO SWIFT BOAT HILLARY CLINTON.  ISNT IT FUNNY YOU CAN NOT LEAVE A MESSAGE ON OBAMA SITES.  ANOTHER LARGE CORPORATE ENTITY GIVING US ANOTHER PRESIDENT THAT HAD LOFTY WORDS.
Hillary is a dirty crook.  You can talk all you want.   She is what she is, and she does what she does.
Hillary will win the nomination. Hillary will win the general election. Hillary will be the next President of the United States of America. Clinton haters you are just going to have to get over it.
Hard to believe that MSNBC is saying something somewhat positive about HRC.
Obama's talk doesn't match action. Today's article in the Chicago Tribune shows why the workers he always talks about who lost their jobs in Illinois do not support him:
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-galesburg_obama_webfeb01,1,6024020.story
Clinton's campaign is sinking rapidly.  When Obama wins the exit polls then he can claim a victory. Obama is now officially a nationwide movement as evidenced by his fundraising ability. He is almost perfect, he has to be, he's black.  Vote for the future, Vote for Obama, Yes We Can Change the World!!
That Dellum paragraph is a joke.  Are you kidding me?  Any one who takes that seriously is an idiot.  FIRED UP AND READY TO GO!

Hillary:
-voted for Iraq war
-voted against Levin amendment
-voted for Iran that could lead to war
-says that if she were to do it all over again, she would vote against the Iraq war, well, we all know HINDSIGHT IS ALWAYS 20/20.  She still won't admit it was a mistake.  She and Bill consistently has lied about Obama's record.

If I can't trust you on the campaign trail, how can any one trust you as president?  And as for that 35 years of experience, don't you think an educated, informed wants to know 35 years of experience in what?  Being someones wife?  Obama has more elected years in office than Hillary.  Face the facts.  Hillary has got nothing to offer, and every thing to lose for Democracts this fall.
San Francisco & Colorado Jim
Please get your facts straight. Hillary voted to give the president (who at the time she nor the rest of us) had any reason to think he would lead us into an unconstitutional and immoral war based on lies. NO ONE voted for WAR!! There was never a vote on War, only a resolution to give the president the power to use military force as a last resort. She did vote for that based on the facts she and others had at that time. Obama was not a senator at the time and while he spoke out against the war at the time he was not in a position to even have all the information that the congress did and was therefore not in the difficult position of having to make that decision. Further, at least Hillary took a stand on Iran (which by the way we are not at war with-yet). Barack did not even SHOW UP for that vote. So, if you want to really start looking at facts then dig a little deeper than media propaganda. Finally, it is getting very tiresome to read over and over again from Obama supporters how evil the Clintons are and the names used to describe them. That kind of negative, childish name-calling gets us nowhere. Really look into the Clinton years and the accomplishments of his administration. We were at peace in the world, we had not invaded a nation without cause, we had abalanced budget and even a surplus, school loans came down and pell grants went up, people did well economically and the rest of the world respected us, we passed the family medical leave act and the list could go on and on. So, before you start name calling and talkiing about how bad it would be to have another Clinton in the White House take a real look at how good things were when the first one was there and stop with the childish behavior. Calling Clinton supporters stupid does not strengthen Obama's argument or give us any clearer picture of exactly what he wants to do for this country. It only makes you and others who engage in this kind of behavior sound like the ones who are unintelligent. Stick to the issues, debate them with some intelligence and we will all be better for it.
Dr. Kat Williams
How revealing it is "trendlines?" So, you mean you want to follow polls? You are doing it already as a candidate, Hillary!

I am sorry to say I want my President to be a leader not a polls follower!

One thing a lot of us do not appreciate from this administration is that Bush does not admit his "mistakes" when made, just like you, Hillary.
I support Hillary, she is inspiring and has experience and knowledge. What is wrong with experience? Obama has not proven himself. He needs to "walk the talk", He would be great as a vice-president, work eight years and then run for president. Clinton has worked hard and has been a professional woman, mother and wife.It is time for a woman to be president.
someone is smoking that stuff-lol.
Hillary WILL win California and she WILL win the nomination! Get ready to say Madam President!!!! Who needs to use the "race card" of "The Great Oprah" all over again? Hint....It's NOT Hillary!!!!!!!!!
Colorado Jim,
Base your comments on facts...the national polls show both Clinton and Obama are virtually tied when pitted against McCain. And McCain will kill Obama if he makes all the misrepresentations/mistakes he made in the last debate against HRC. http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/la_lovefest.html
Let me say first that it's high time we had a woman President.  But, to echo Susan Sarandon, this woman may not be the one.  I know Clinton supporters don't want to hear it, but the following is undeniably true:

For Democrats wanting to take back the White House, there are 2 unfortunate but fundamental fact that unfortunately make a vote for Hillary on Tuesday a vote to once again give the White House to the GOP:

1) The GOP is in disarray right now and conservatives will likely stay at home in the fall UNLESS there's a Clinton on the ballot (please save your breath if you're going to respond to this with Anne Coulter--she was trying to sabotage McCain yesterday--she would NEVER vote for Hillary).  The ONLY thing that will bring the GOP together is a Clinton on the ballot.  If she is on the ballot, you will see the most concentrated and energized get out the vote effort the GOP has EVER put together.

2) Hillary will not draw Independents or Republicans to cross over.  Barack has already shown he can.

That's not important in California--a Democrat will win the state regardless of who it is.  But it is important in the classic swing states.
When Hillary was a Wellesley, a campus group of black female students wanted to stage a hunger strike to protest the curriculum and recruiting.  She convinced them not to, and pushed for a 2 day student strike.  Now what does this tell you about her?  It tells me that she needed to be in control.  She couldn't let the black women stage it and humbly ask to join them, she wanted to WIN and be given the credit.  This may be how people accrue power, but it is calculated, opportunistic, and shallow.  When I worked for Cesar Chavez, I did not tell him, let me talk everyone into supporting you, but let me be in charge.  I went to work under his auspices, knowing I didn't think of the Union myself, I was a SUPPORTER.  Hillary has to be in the spotlight.  The American people are sick sick sick of these megalomaniacs and now prefer a humbler, more inspirational soul.  She will lose us the White House.  She has too many skeletons in her closet.  Obama for President.  Marina Garcia Gelpe Teacher, Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Activist, Democrat, and Patriot  Ithaca, New York

no ouestion -it will be hillary when the dust          settles. she will be elected, and do a fine job of it-- white, black men and women will use the good sence they have and vote for her--obama can have his turn in eight years and I WILL GLADLY VOTE FOR HIM AT THAT TIME.
35 years of exprience gave her the ability to be a master at smear campaign. With that much experience, she has seasoned herself to pull in as many personas as possible to portray herself as the kind of person voters don't know her in the media.
So, I won't be surprised if she wins the nomination -- she may do so through skillful deception that an average, blind voter may not be able to detect.
No details about the fact that the room was largely empty?
In 2008 the People of the United States of America will elect a President for all the People. Some folks already know that Obama is that person, other will learn as time goes by, and see the greatness of this country (its free citizens). Free to know the Hope and Destiny of America as the True Leader (example) of the World. Free of those things that divide the human family that have hinder our full human potential. America is ready to move into a new area (the future) some will be left behind in the "past" but that is progress. G'd Bless America and our True Leaders.
The Clinton's are not Electable in the general election.
Mayor Dellums is working pretty much full-time for Killary because he's brown-nosing for a cabinet seat, according to SF media.

Mayor Gruesom Newsom, aka Uber-Yuppie Gavvie, probably sees himself as Veep. Hopefully his rehab, after the mayoral affair scandal, went well.

I would imagine that Newsom's tutor in corruption, former mayor "Slick" Willie Brown, was on the dais, and had plenty of extras from the projects bused in.

And of course Willie's old pal and Democratic fundraiser Joe O'Donoghue, head of the local Irish Mafia, would have been front and center, with plenty of his "boys" to back him up. I'm sure that Gavvie is keeping the city's planning/zoning/land-use racketeering operation at full strength so Boss Joe can keep funneling money into the Dem coffers, with extra cuts for Killary.
Hillary is the more progressive candidate proposing FULL universal Health Care coverage for all Americans. Why would Dems nominate someone who is giving up before negotiations begin?!?! Obama has the same voting record as Hillary on the Iraq war. If he is so principled, why did he vote to continue the occupation?

The republicans are going to tare Obama to pieces
We need a strong leader someone that can stand up to the republicans. Obama studders when is is debating with the dem. what makes you guys think that he can stand up to the rep.?
Get ready for 8 years of rep. if he is elected.

Walk the Walk and Hillary does.
Get out of the clouds and come down to realty
"Once I'm elected, I want to organize a summit in the Muslim world, with all the heads of state, to have an honest discussion about ways to bridge the gap that grows every day between Muslims and the West," Thursday's edition of Paris Match quoted Obama as saying,

"I want to ask them to join our fight against terrorism. We must also listen to their concerns," Obama said in the French-language transcript.

Obama was against the war befor he voted for the war funding. How does he explain the two face.
He sounds like a car salesman more than a leader.
If Ron Dellums is so concerned about healing urban centers, why doesn't he start by taking care of the one city he is mayor of ?
Wow! Sen. Hillary Clinton will be a GREAT President! She's more impressive every time I see her. Her experience, intelligence, political skills, leadership, and qualifications are second to none. Her grasp of domestic & international issues astounds me. The Dems are SO lucky to have her this year. I have no doubt she will be an exceptional leader. Her life's work demonstrates that quality. Rock on Hillary!
If Ron Dellums is so concerned about healing urban centers, why doesn't he start by taking care of the one city he is mayor of ?
Barack Obama is a good man he would be good for this country.
But if he becomes the Democrat nominee, the next President would be a Republican.

This country has not advance that much!
