Romney wins Maine caucus poll

Posted: Sunday, February 03, 2008 10:16 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
Romney won Maine’s nonbinding presidential preference poll, 53%-22% over McCain. Ron Paul finished third with 19%; Huckabee was fourth with 5%. The voting took place at caucuses Friday and Saturday; the results were announced last night by the Maine Republican Party.

The nonbinding poll will be used as an indicator at the May 3rd state convention to select the state’s 21, also unbound, delegates to the national convention.

Maine’s caucuses, at 413 municipal caucuses, began Friday and continue through today, though the straw poll announcement was made last night because very few caucuses take place today. The Patriots are in the Super Bowl, after all, the state party explained.

Those 21 delegates (plus 19 alternates) are selected at the state convention from about 3,000-plus municipal delegates, who are selected this weekend.

At the state convention, those delegates will all agree (or not) to vote for the same person at national as selected in the straw poll. But if there's a strong contingent of delegates who are for Romney and a strong contingent for another candidate, then they could go to the national convention with a split delegation.

Thank you, conservative elite media commentators and talk show hosts, for splitting the Republican ticket by your continual slandering of Huckabee and Paul supporters. You didn’t get your guy so you trashed everybody else. The Republicans will not get those voters back in time for the primary election. Can you say G. Ford, B. Dole and H. Bush? Please be aware that you are not that smart. You just turned off the conservative base and their donations.

Thank you for putting Democrat in the White House 2009.
Ron Paul will end up taking the delegates.  Because the delegates who volunteered are proactive and smart and know better than the masses.
Although the vote percentages will probably not change much, you shouldn't call the race early. With second and third place just 2% apart, it could change. Most of yesterday Ron Paul was ahead of McCain. Romney obviously ran away with this race, but news shouldn't be reported as absolute until it is absolute.
"a strong contingent of delegates who are for Romney and a strong contingent for another candidate."

Is Ron Paul the "another" candidate?

My guess is he is.
"The Patriots are in the Super Bowl, after all, the state party explained."

The irony was not lost on the 19% of the Maine GOP participants...
Hooray for Romney! This is the first step to uniting the conservatives for Mitt!
This is really silly.

The poll says one thing and the delegates vote for another.

Lets get back to a winner takes all primary.

Let me guess who the other candidate is.  Ron Paul?  Of course it is!!!  If it was McCain or Huckabee, you would have said so.

So if you are reporting on straw polls, you must mention that Ron Paul has won 85% of all strawpolls conducted so far - no wonder Romney winning a straw poll is such big news.

For those of you wondering delegate race was won by Dr. Paul - he won over 50% of the state delegates.  In other words, a landslide.

Great momentum for Dr. Paul heading into supertuesday.

For those of you interested on who "won" Maine, partial results can be found here:

This is not over! As we all know, things happen in California first. Romney now has the momentum and is leading in Cali. This will spread the rest of the country. Super Tuesday will not be the end. Then Romney can take McCain one on one the rest of the way. All true conservatives need to get on the bandwagon for Romney. Come on in Paul supporters, Fred Heads, Huckabee supporters and friends of Rudy. Let's take back our Republican party by voting for Romney!
How can you give the final results when only 68% of the votes have been reported? Are you able to look into the future or something?
Ron Paul had 21% with an hour to go and was in 2nd place all day long. Suddenly and mysteriously, at the end of the days voting, it was like Paul and McCain traded places. There is a force out there determined to keep Ron paul down folks. Welcome to the USSA.
The Iowa caucus' are not binding either. Romney winning with over 50% without visiting the state shows his powerful support in New England. McCain had the two senators from Maine backing him and talking him up at caucuses. Many were surprised by how terribly McCain performed stated GOP leaders. This could be a foreshadowing of things to come as polls did not indicate a Romney slaughter of all other candidates. The Maine caucus is especially bad for Huckabee who was last place by far with only 5% of the vote.
The people of Maine know a honest person when they see one, Mitt Romney! Maine didnot let the media or their elected officials dictate their choice!  Maine can see through the fake conservatives, McCain and Huckabee! America, listen to Maine...they know Romney is out of the Washington crew of the dishonet politicians!!!
The Maine caucus is not officially over. And McCain only has 21% with 68% of precints reporting. He is leading Ron Paul by only 2 percentage points. It is concerning how the media continues to put a bad light on Ron Paul, such as in Nevada and Louisiana.

Ron Paul is not flatlining. He is just now building momentum. Think about the large majority of the anti-war GOP vote that went to McCain in the NH exit polls. Those people obviously didn’t know what the heck they were voting for in “Hundred Year War” McKill. Every dollar donated, every commercial ran, every door knocked will keep growing this movement.
I lived in Maine for a couple of years and found  that a large portion of the people in the State   have core high moral values; I'm not surprized by the outcome of Romney on top of this poll.
I believe these numbers are preliminary numbers.  Everywhere else I read about this it is stated that fully one third of the votes have yet to be counted.  Being that there is a very close second and third, it is too early to call those positions.

Will you please publish the final numbers when they are released?
There will indeed be a split delegation since Ron Paul supporters grabbed the most delegates.
Ron should have gotten First!!!! Go Ron Paul! Vote on Super Tuesday People we need the vote! :)
Ron Paul, once again, kicking tail.  It simply amazes me, as well as other thinking people, when main stream media disregards Dr. Paul's clear advances in these primaries.  It will be even more fun to watch the futile attempts by msm to silence this leader.  Things are evolving....
Go RON PAUL! I can imagine how many people were kept from voting over technicalities like what everyone in Louisiana faced, such as a piece of mail with your address on it on top of being asked for a photo id and voters registration! Scammers. RON PAUL is the PEOPLE'S CHOICE - FACE IT, DEAL WITH IT AND GET OUT OF THE WAY OF LIBERTY AND FREEDOM.
McCain has no integrity. He cheated on his wife who faithfully waited for him for 5 years while he was a POW. Not only that but he divorced his wife and married the girl he was having an affair with. Maybe it was for the money (she's a billionaire). Or, maybe it was her age (she's 17 years younger than him). Most of you have probably seen her, she's the one who looks like a plastic manikin that's always by his side.

McCain also graduated 5TH FROM THE BOTTOM of his class in the naval academy. 5TH FROM THE BOTTOM PEOPLE!!!

Compare that to Mitt Romney who got a law degree AND master of business degree AT THE SAME TIME from HARVARD and graduated FIRST IN HIS CLASS.

That's enough information for me to not vote for McCain, no matter who he's running against. I'd vote for Hillary over the scum bag.

VOTE FOR ROMNEY BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!!!!
Any amount of $ McCain spends is simply supporting the Democrat nominee. He cannot beat Obama and he cannot beat Hillary in the general. He sounds like a blubbering idiot in the debates and has ZERO chance of winning without the support of the republican base. I am still amazed at the idea of anyone supporting someone who is so stubborn...with regard to the war, the false statements he issed regarding Romney's "timetable" and his refusal to answer the illegal immigration questions. He will not answer that question with "straight talk" because he fully intends to carry on with HIS bill he STRONGLY believes in to grant amnesty to illegals...only now he's decided he'll "secure the borders first".  How can you differentiate between "illegals" and "criminals"? Definition of illegal is "unlawful". ALL...EVERY SINGLE ONE of them are criminals and have ALL commited a "crime" by coming here. There is a long line of honest people waiting to become citizens and the "line-jumpers" are going to be given the greatest gift of American citizenship simply by breaking the law and paying a fine...this is SO UNFAIR to those trying to do it the right way. I saw his first ad on television last night here in Ohio (our primary is not until March 4). His campaign managers must not read the blog because his message is "foot soldier in the Reagan revolution" speech...AGAIN and states that he is the only "true conservative"...Uugghhh! I am already sick of this guy. Huckabee would be great, but needs to step aside at this point. The people harping on Romney for spending his own money need to take a step back and listen to what they are saying. He is not trying to BUY this election...he loves this country enough to invest in it even when he is not the "front-runner". You can spin it however you want, but those of you who bash him for spending his money on something he believes in are nothing more than JEALOUS of the fact that he has it to spend. I am not rich, but I will not disapprove of him simply because he has money. McCain thinks there is something wrong with making a profit...could the reason be that he doesn't know how to do that?!?! McCain cannot fix our economy, he cannot unite our country and certainly cannot unite the Republican party when he is not a part of it!
I am baffled that these results are reported as if they are final even though only 2/3 of the votes have been counted.
If you have been following the Paul campaign you will be happy to know that our supporters have filled a majority of the delegate slots. Straw poll victories sound nice, but ultimately the delegates decide. Split 'em up Maine!
This is with only 67% of the vote reported.  Yes, Romney won, but why the quickness to produce this story!?  Is it because if they reported the other 33% Ron Paul would have a better showing, thus embarrass McCain.  Something smells corrupt in this country.
Please, people, once the election is over don't forget what Fox and the other 5 news corporations have done to all but their chosen candidates. This election has virtually already been stolen from us before it began.   Find ways to punish them, turn to alternative media, write your congressman, keep posting, spread the message, vote in lawmakers who will make it illegal to own too much of a media market.  Let this injustice be fuel for a major shift in the way America consumes news.
Talk radio has turned into "listen and be sheep" radio. Romney has reinvented himself about 4 times since he announced he was better for gays than Kennedy, ran away from Reagan's legacy when he was running for Governor, stated clearly that McCain's immigration bill was a reasonable bill, raised taxes in Massachusetts and had the 4th worst job growth in the country while Governor.

He is a moderate republican annointed by a few talk show hosts pushing for ratings as a conservative.  Those of you who just listen to talk radio should read a little bit and get the truth yourself rather than in your car.  You are being lied to by the talk radio buffoons.  Learn for yourselves, the country is worth the time.  McCain isn't the greatest conservative ever for sure, but he never said he was. He doesn't deserve a hit job by talk radio hosts nervous about their ratings. So nervous they would sacrifice their country to get ratings.
What great ideas has Romney come up with?  Got anything yet?  The guy is selling the same old story because he doesn't know what he will have to run as in the general election?  You want this guy the be the nominee of your party?  He hasn't presented one new idea except that huge government bailout of the failed auto industry to pull him across the finish line in Michigan.  He may have a Harvard law degree and hundreds of millions of dollars, but he is bankrupt when it comes to ideas. His whole campaign is driven by the "anyone but McCain" hit job that talk radio thought up.
If you are a thinking person it is not really to tough to figure out why Ron Paul get virtually no Press. The international Bankers, Corporate Elite, and Paid Press like things just the way they are. Why Americans want to settle for the status quo is beyond me.
