Romney focuses on California

From NBC/NJ's Erin McPike
NASHVILLE -- With rising poll numbers in California, Romney feels like a resurgent candidate. Similar to Obama in New Hampshire after his Iowa win when he said if he won the Granite State, he'd win the White House, Romney said to reporters here today, "If I win California, that means you’re going to have a conservative in the White House."

So Romney's making a last-ditch effort by flying back to the Golden State for an evening rally tonight in Long Beach, where he campaigned late last week. Asked what he thought the addition of one rally would do for his prospects there, he said, "I can tell you it’s a lot better than not going to California." And he added, "I think it communicates to people in California that the entire nation is watching California and what they’re going to do."

Romney also pointed out that the dynamics of the race have forced a shifting strategy by McCain. "I understand that we’ve now brought Sen. McCain back to California, too," Romney said. "He’s like, 'Oh wow, Romney’s there -- I better go back there and see if I can’t shore up the race there.' But he’s sliding in California."

He wasn't the only one who had some choice words for and about McCain today. Romney was joined by Tennessee Rep. Marsha Blackburn (who originally supported Romney before switching to Thompson and is now back with the former Massachusetts governor) and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum. The Pennsylvanian said at the Pancake Pantry that he's been on the fence over whom to support for a long time, but that he thinks now Romney is the only real conservative choice.

"It would be a sad day, a sad day if the state of Tennessee passes on the opportunity speak loudly on Super Tuesday, to speak with a conservative voice," Santorum said. "And if Tennessee wants to speak with a conservative voice, if it wants to show the Republican Party and the bigwigs who are lining up like lemmings behind the nominee, if they want to show the bigwigs in Washington who is in charge of this party, it's the conservative heartland that is in charge of this party, then you only have one choice, one choice: not Mike Huckabee, not Ron Paul, certainly not John McCain. It's Mitt Romney."

It wasn't just McCain that Romney went after. Asked who he would rather face in a general election, Romney laughed and said he'd just like to face a Democrat and then slammed them both. "You know, I think in Barack Obama's case, the fact that he's never had any leadership experience -- virtually of any kind would be something that would be pointed out by me if I'm the nominee," Romney said. "And in Sen. Clinton's case, she's had an opportunity to get things done, she just hasn't been able to do it."

Although Romney's losing his voice and said he can get through the next 36 hours but then will need some "R and R" for his vocal chords, he boldly declared, "This is the day before Super Tuesday. I'm going to be going across the country. This is a 24-hour nonstop effort. We're gonna make sure and see as many people as we possibly can."

All that campaigning may explain away why Romney hasn't been briefed yet on the new budget by President Bush out this morning and said he can't comment yet.

But for a candidate who's gotten testy on more than one occasion over what he'd propose as a budget, because he hasn't been ready to release that in the past, he finally opened the door to doing so soon. "I’ve been putting together my own plan for what I’d do with our budget," he said. "There are a number of things I’d like to do." Perhaps the newly press-friendly candidate will be giving the media more red meat soon.

This is not over! As we all know, things happen in California first. Romney now has the momentum and is leading in Cali. This will spread the rest of the country. Super Tuesday will not be the end. Then Romney can take McCain one on one the rest of the way. All true conservatives need to get on the bandwagon for Romney. Come on in Paul supporters, Fred Heads, Huckabee supporters and friends of Rudy. Let's take back our Republican party by voting for Romney!
I'm an independent hoping my choices are McCain and Obama. If it's Clinton and Romney, I'll plug my nose and vote for Clinton. If it's Obama and Romney, I'll enthusiastically vote for Obama. A Romney presidency just scares me to death. If a corporate, right wing panderer makes it to the White House again it will be more of the same and a sad day for the country.
FINALLY ... someone is questioning Obama's all talk no walk rhetoric and unimpressive record!
I'm voting for Mitt Romney tomorrow because Mitt Romney is the last hope for strong families in America, the last hope for a revolution against the looming recession, and the last hope against terrorists who would love for us to elect McCain so they know they will never be waterboarded or compelled to tell us when they next plan to strap bombs to retarded women and send them into a crowded market.  McCain and the Democrats preach a gospel of doom and gloom and have back-stabbed the president at every turn.
I'm not sure which one is WORSE, McCain or Romney. The war monger or the CEO, both bad choices. How about a President Of, By & FOR THE PEOPLE!!!
Romey all the way!!! Go Romney. The true conservatives are fed up with McCain and the media madness.
It seems funny that Bush had so much money to beat McCain 8 years ago.Now 2 democrats who are unaceptible to a indepentent like myself are running with lots of money and another big money yes,my grandfathers label for 1st Bush, man oposes McCain.I wonder when we are going to publicly fund elections Instead of gov by the money for the money?
Romney proclaims he wants to enlarge our military sever hundred thousand. Are his sons going to serve this country?I think not.Since there are many that will not join I think that leaves the draft that every young man of 18 is forced to sign up.I know because one my grandsons was threatened with arrest if he did not do so.Another is serving in Iraq.I could never vote for a coward or a warmonger-------my conscience would not let me
Go Mitt Romney!!!  This guy is earning and working his way to the white house with all the other contenders ganging up on him. Our families, economy, and standards need Mitt Romney!
Before you vote for Romney, thoroughly research the history of Bain Capital, a company he cofounded.

Do you really want a corporate raider as President ????
When will the media's love affair and rooting for Obama end?  Will it?  Is a neutral unbiased media a thing of the past?  Clinton will make it in spite of the bias displayed by the media against her anyway...Wake up media and do the job the correct way!
I am disappointed at the dirty tricks of Ted K.,
If Obama is nominated I will NOT vote nor will my
husband or daughter. Let the War mongerer win,
which he will when he gets thru with Obama.  What
a dirty thing Ted did to Hillary. They talk about
Bill Clinton, this is Teds way of finally getting
into the white house.
I guss McCain is to Honest for the "True Conservatives". Not that McCain is totally honest, but at least he stands by his record. If Romney had to run without his personal wealth funding the campaign he would no longer be in the race. At least Huck and Paul have raised enough money to go on without spending their personal fortune. Of course Mitt is spending all of his fortune because he is a true conserative.
By the way, let the record reflect my respect for Tony - I thought San Francisco outlawed being conservative.
I'm from Arizona, and I can tell you that the only reason I would vote for John McCain is to get him the heck out of our state.  His stance on the illegals and his gutting of veterans benefits here are reasons enough to want him to retire from politics (on his wife's money, of course).
John in Lake Worth...

Sorry, but you're wrong..."In the race for the Republican Presidential Nomination, it’s John McCain at 33%, Mitt Romney at 30%, and Mike Huckabee at 22%. Ron Paul is supported by 5%"...according to the The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll.

The numbers in the vast majority of polls show McCain leading Romney in CA, and by more than 20% nationally.

John McCain is the ONLY Republican candidate who can beat either Hillary or Barak in a general election, and you know it. If you want the White House, get on the bus.
If we allow McCain to take the issue of illegal immigration out of the 2008 election, then the entire GOP down to dog catchers will suffer from the depressed voter turnout.  Not that the McCain-Lieberman ticket will care.  They've been strawmanning and insulting our party to their mainstream media pals for decades.

I know you may have to hold your nose to vote for Romney.  I know I will.  But the alternative is to hoist ourselves on our own petard!  For the love of God, vote against McCain!
As Republicans we cannot vote for McCain who is a liberal democrat light. If it comes down to true liberals like Clintons and Obama vs a liberal light the true liberal wins. The Base of the Republican party will not vote for McCain with the enthusiasm needed to win the election against the enthusiasm of moveon.org (Soros inspired Betray us). The conservatives of the Republican base must rally around Romney to stop McCain the way the conservative base stopped McCain-Kennedy's amnesty- immigration bill. A vote for Huckabee or Paul is a vote to nominate McCain. Romney is the most intelligent candidate running for President. If you want to solve the problems that this country faces you must vote for the individual who has shown through his past accomplishments what he will accomplish during the next eight years.
Romney is the only candidate that seems to believe that free market capitalism is a positive force.  The other candidates with their class warfare, business bashing rhetoric keep pandering to voters who are woefully ignorant about free market economics.  More big government solutions to health care?  Who are they kidding?  Health care costs grow at double or triple the rate of inflation precisely because the government subsidizes it through Medicare and Medicaid.  The only answer to the looming fiscal crisis that the government has brought us with Medicare is to provide greater incentives to the pharmaceutical and biotech industries to develop actual cures--not symptom treatments or drugs for a lifetime of disease management--for the top 5 or 10 costliest medical conditions.  A tax policy that guarantees any company that develops one of these cures tax free profits forever on the successful treatment would be good start.  What do we hear from the pols instead--bashing of the very companies that hold the only solution to this problem. What a bunch of economic morons.
Romney will continue his surge.  He is real and honest.Romney didnot take a salary in Mass as Governor and doesn't plan to for the Preidency. He doesn't take the money because the taxpayers work hard for their money, he doen't need it, and he is into cutting government spending...he does what he says!!!
Go Romney!  Everyone who is a conservative, independant, or who cares about the direction of our country and is for closing the borders, sending illegals home, low taxes, cut government waste and spending...on and on...... VOTE FOR ROMNEY!!
A vote for McCain is like a vote for Billary.  McCain should be a Democrat - he almost decided to be one! Mitt Romney has what it takes, and isn't already a Washington insider.  Romney even looks presidential. I will vote for anyone before voting for McCain.  And I'm absolutely serious about that!
Mitt Romney is by far the best candidate for President.  He knows how to be a leader.  He knows how to run things and how to get things done.  He knows the best ways of keeping America safe.  He doesn't need to pretend to be the real conservative like John McCain, he IS the real conservative.  Mitt Romney is the best person to take care of our country.  Go Mitt!!!
Rick Santorum's the best Romney's got?  He lost his Senate seat by double-digits!  It was a rout!  The people in his own state can't stand him, except for a few extremists!  Rick may think Romney's traveling w/ God almighty but even winning 1 state (I know, + Utah and Mass) isn't going to keep his ship from sinking.

BTW, how many home states does Romney have?  Is it more or less than the number of stances he's taken on every major issue?
Romney brought Kiss to the closing ceremonies of the olympics - how can we not vote for him? Rock on Romney!
I would like to become a Mitt Romney supporter in the State of Maryland.  Hal Solomon

The only reason Mitt Romney isn't way out in front of McCain is because Huckabee is taking votes from Romney, and the media wants only liberals candidates. McCain is a RINO, and not much difference from Hillary. Huckabee knows he doesn't have a chance but is obviously working with McCain in hopes of running as his VP.

It's time that all Republicans vote for the ONLY conservative candidate we have - Mitt Romney. A vote for anyone else is only helping a liberal.
why does everyone overlook this win-- are we saying that Maine doesn't count? The mainstream media is failing the average American. We can discuss McCains "momentum" because it fits nicely with a predetermined narrative......what of Romney's recent endorsements and his Maine victory?
KKK in support of Mitt!
Mormon doctrine, indeed, speaks the truth...that colored individuals are sons and daughters of Satan in their pre-existence life form. Yes, they may still be saved, but they are marked unto eternity.
Are the conservatives going to start their own party?  They've pretty much declared war on the republican party.  It's pretty obvious the republican party is going a diffrent direction than the conservatives want and if your not with them your against them.  Romney looks like he is the catlyst for the weakening of the republican party.  Divided you fall, Romney is the worst thing that could've ever happened for the republican party.
We can only hope that those dumb enough to think a corporate raider is the economic and moral savior of our country stay home this election cycle...any idiot can pretty up a company for resale, gut it, whack some  employees, falsify some sales records and presto whizzo you have mittflip...or you can vote for big john mcwar who wants to kill and maim your kids...
Mark, PA-  actually John is right.  While it's true that McCain is leading nationally, a Zogby/etc. poll done yesterday puts Romney 8 points ahead in California.  You can see the results of several recent polls on RealClearPolitics.  Huckabee is a distant third nearly everywhere (even Georgia). Ron Paul is doing even worse- barely making double digits in most polls.
Finally! Tomorrow I can vote for Ron Paul, then leave the GOP. I'll never be able to wash this feeling off.

(The GOP has been practicing "class warfare" for years. If you want to be industry's slave, vote for Romney.)
This baloney about Mccain "would beat Hillary and Obama" in a general election is ridiculous.  How can you poll a general election when the primaries are still undecided.  Also, polls are not the be-all end-all....Remember the front-runner Guilian?  Remember the "dead" Mccain?  Polls will change considerably until the fall.
This is why I cannot vote for someone "that will beat Hillary or Obama"....because you do not know that he(Mccain) will.  I don't care who you vote for....just do it based on your identification with the candidate and their beliefs.
Romney is a clone of Bush.

America needs someone who can get things done. A vote for Romney is a vote for another Bush, and America already knows that. We're not dumb as mitt hopes.
This is it ladies and gentlemen! If you don't get out and support ROMNEY, you have elected McCain by default.  Do you really want that??  Romney not perfect, but again none of them are.  He is clearly the best choice and has my vote.  CALIFORNIA voters....It's up to YOU!! Make us proud!!!!
This may seem harsh to some but is Obama using religion to pander for votes?   I mean he seems to touting that fact that he is Christian a lot lately, and it is a close election and all.  Did a man born to an atheist mother and Muslim father come to Jesus to earn some votes?
I have spent considerable time trying to pick the candidate that would best represent my values. I was shocked to see Clinton propose wage garnishment to fund universal healthcare. I would rather have a MBA/businessman, than a politician leading the country. People can talk, but actions are what matters. The consensus is that Romney did a great job overseeing the successful 2002 Winter Olympics. The economy is also very important to me, and a fiscally responsible businessman can fix the budget. He has already proven he is smart with money. I will be voting for Romney on March 4.
National polls mean nothing right now.  The election is 9 months away.  Romney is the only republican that can win Michigan.  Do the electoral college math.  Romney is the only hope we republicans have.  McCain will get smoked in the general election.  The media has been pushing for McCain because they know how weak he really is.  Don't believe the hype.  Vote Romney and save the Republican party.
From the Gray Grizzly:

It looks like the masses are being swayed by endorsements from left leading politicians (i.e. the governors of Florida and California) and other government big wigs or even former military leaders.

AMERICAN VOTERS THINK FOR YOURSELF. VOTE ROMNEY!

Romney is the candidate who can bring fresh ideas to Washington DC and the White House. McCain is too old to become the next president!!!

IF McCAIN WINDS THE NOMINATION FOR THE REPUBLICAN PARTY I WILL VOTE DEMOCRATIC FOR OBAMA...ALSO SOMEONE WHO COULD FRESH IDEAS TO THE WHITE HOUSE. IF CLINTON WINS THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINATION I WILL NOT VOTE.

I'v been a life long Republican for over 35 years. If worst (McCain) comes to worst (Clinton). I simply will not vote in a primary for the first time in 35 years!

GO ROMNEY!!!

kns@xmission.com
I am definitely voting for Romney! He is the only candidate that I feel I can trust.  He has the experience to turn the economy around and is a natural leader!!  Romney is the ONLY candidate that could win Hilary or Obama in a debate.. he is educated and confident and has what it takes to lead this country.... VOTE FOR MITT!!!
Please watch this video for me before you vote. The media is influenced by money, we all know that.

As a U.S. Marine supporting my Country, I ask you to do one thing for us. Watch one youtube video. The video is a contrast between Mitt Romney, John Mccain, and Mike Huckabee. (not a Ron Paul video)

I love the USA. Will you watch it for the sake of our Country?

It scares me to death to think that a temperous angry old man could be our commander in chief.  The first thing he'll do when he gets offended is insist the nation go to war against the offender.  McCain is immature for his age, pompous and full of hot air.  Heroes don't brag about their heroism.  I will never vote for this smug, prideful, power seeking guy.

Romney is the best we have.  He has principle and energy and innovation.  All we'd hear from McCain if he were president are a lot of cuss words...
John McCain behind doors with his advisors:

"Fu-- Romney...  Fu-k Hillary... F--k 'em all... I'M THE GREATEST LEADER IN THE WORLD... THATS THE STRAIGHT TALK...  AND ANYONE WHO GETS IN MY WAY I'LL KICK THE LIVING SH-T OUT OF!"
Romney is the real deal.  He is smart and a great communicator.  He has become more conservative over time and he has a strong platform in the economic, defense and values areas.  He has a great record of accomplishment in business, government and with the olympics.  If there was ever a time we needed a turnaround, it is now.
Republicans; Dont just follow the news reports about McCain's surge and jump on the McCain bandwagon for fear he's the ONLY one who can beat the Democrats. McCain is a Democrat! So we'll have 2 Dems to choose from in the general election..Not good! I was born and have lived in AZ my entire life and I'm voting for Mitt tomorrow. We have to retain the Republican party not just vote for someone who has an R behind his name.
I am voting for Mitt Romney because he is the last hope for strong families in America.  This is what matters most for me.  It does not hurt that he strongly opposes illegal immigration and understands the economy better than any other candidate.
Vote for McCain. Romney is a soulless ghoul.  He takes his money and orders from others.
