Romney focuses on California

Posted: Monday, February 04, 2008 10:24 AM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Erin McPike
NASHVILLE -- With rising poll numbers in California, Romney feels like a resurgent candidate. Similar to Obama in New Hampshire after his Iowa win when he said if he won the Granite State, he'd win the White House, Romney said to reporters here today, "If I win California, that means you’re going to have a conservative in the White House."

So Romney's making a last-ditch effort by flying back to the Golden State for an evening rally tonight in Long Beach, where he campaigned late last week. Asked what he thought the addition of one rally would do for his prospects there, he said, "I can tell you it’s a lot better than not going to California." And he added, "I think it communicates to people in California that the entire nation is watching California and what they’re going to do."

Romney also pointed out that the dynamics of the race have forced a shifting strategy by McCain. "I understand that we’ve now brought Sen. McCain back to California, too," Romney said. "He’s like, 'Oh wow, Romney’s there -- I better go back there and see if I can’t shore up the race there.' But he’s sliding in California."

He wasn't the only one who had some choice words for and about McCain today. Romney was joined by Tennessee Rep. Marsha Blackburn (who originally supported Romney before switching to Thompson and is now back with the former Massachusetts governor) and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum. The Pennsylvanian said at the Pancake Pantry that he's been on the fence over whom to support for a long time, but that he thinks now Romney is the only real conservative choice.

"It would be a sad day, a sad day if the state of Tennessee passes on the opportunity speak loudly on Super Tuesday, to speak with a conservative voice," Santorum said. "And if Tennessee wants to speak with a conservative voice, if it wants to show the Republican Party and the bigwigs who are lining up like lemmings behind the nominee, if they want to show the bigwigs in Washington who is in charge of this party, it's the conservative heartland that is in charge of this party, then you only have one choice, one choice: not Mike Huckabee, not Ron Paul, certainly not John McCain. It's Mitt Romney."

It wasn't just McCain that Romney went after. Asked who he would rather face in a general election, Romney laughed and said he'd just like to face a Democrat and then slammed them both. "You know, I think in Barack Obama's case, the fact that he's never had any leadership experience -- virtually of any kind would be something that would be pointed out by me if I'm the nominee," Romney said. "And in Sen. Clinton's case, she's had an opportunity to get things done, she just hasn't been able to do it."

Although Romney's losing his voice and said he can get through the next 36 hours but then will need some "R and R" for his vocal chords, he boldly declared, "This is the day before Super Tuesday. I'm going to be going across the country. This is a 24-hour nonstop effort. We're gonna make sure and see as many people as we possibly can."

All that campaigning may explain away why Romney hasn't been briefed yet on the new budget by President Bush out this morning and said he can't comment yet.

But for a candidate who's gotten testy on more than one occasion over what he'd propose as a budget, because he hasn't been ready to release that in the past, he finally opened the door to doing so soon. "I’ve been putting together my own plan for what I’d do with our budget," he said. "There are a number of things I’d like to do." Perhaps the newly press-friendly candidate will be giving the media more red meat soon.

I'm voting for Romney tomorrow. I think he might have a chance at taking CA. If he does, watch for media spin to talk about Mormon votes giving it to him and a focus on McCain's New York win.
Question:
Which republican is less like Bush?
Which republican is not afraid to seriously consider what is best for Americans?
Be careful because neither Romney or McCain have seperated from Bush. This is very frightening!
I am voting for Romney because John McCain scares me,  I feel that voting for him would be putting the same people back into Washington.  McCain keeps talking about reaching across the isle however that is so hard.  Republicans want a true conservative, not just someone trying to be half a conservative.
California is home to more Mormons than any state yes more then Utah -- more than 750,000 -- and the Golden State has been Romney's richest source of campaign contributions -- more than $6.5 million. The polls have no way of accounting for this number. Romney also has the endorsment of 72 major corporate figures
they feel Romney success will help the economy.
I was for McCain and his straight talk express until he showed himself to be like every other politician in Washington. When he knowingly lied about Romneys position on time tables in Iraq.John why did you go to the dark side??? Romney isnt perfect but I feel that he has fought on records and not deceit.I will not vote for someone just because the liberal media wants me to think that he will do better against the Dems.Mr.Romney you have my vote!!!  Balance the budget, and Stop Washington from spending our kids futures!!!!!
You right wing conservatives really do live in a fantasy world.

"THE LIBERAL MEDIA IS AGAINST US CONSERVATIVES. EUROPE AND THE WORLD IS AGAINST US CONSERVATIVES. EVERYONE IS LIBERAL BUT US CONSERVAIVES."

Not everyone that disagrees with you is a liberal. Your views are just so far to the right that everyone seems to be liberal from your perspective. Come back to the middle for the good of the country.

I'm going to vote for Mitt.  It would be refreshing to have an outsider come in with the track recored of Mitt.  He knows how to make things happen and get things done to help the American people.  The current Washington establishment doesn't want to have to deal with Mitt.  Lets give America a chance to be great again with optimism.  Vote Mitt.  I feel he is the best candidate by far of those running.
In the recent debate, Romney was the only candidate to bring up the fact that entitlement spending is out of control. We'll never get federal spending under control without addressing that issue. Romney has my vote.
I feel insulted by the MSM's own agenda, and sense a grassroot conservative backlash coming tomorrow. We are smarter than the MSM's given us credit for. We will prove it tomorrow and take the future back into our own hands.

Please vote for Romney, the only viable conservative left, on Tuesday!
Here's my comment!!  I am a democrat from Massachusetts.  How dare Romney presume he can be President!!  He has no experience outside of Massachusetts.   Being President of the United States is NOT running a business!!  The gall of him to presume it is!  He has no national political experience!  Running the Olympics does not count.  If you think this country is in trouble now - what till Romney gets in!!  I think people are going to be awfully sorry they either vote for him and thinking of voting for him!!  He should be a good guy and drop out now!!

Lastly, how dare he talk about our fighting men and women.  He has five sons who never went to war- what they were running his businesses?  That's a feeble excuse.

A disgrunted Democrat from Massachusetts
I am still hanging in there for Hillary....with all the negative press and media coverage she has received it really will take a miracle for her to win at this point in time. I just think it was so unfair that she got such little coverage and that Obama was on every channel you turned on. You certainly will never convince me that it was not a gender thing with her because every male news person on CNN never had anything positive to say about her. They bashed her every chance they could get. No wonder her husband had to pick up the slack and fight for her. The news media never gave her a chance. If she does win the nomination it won't be because of the media coverage...she strictly would have done it on her own. You go Hillary!!
Romney has my vote this election.  Romney stands head and shoulders above any other candidate for three reasons:  1-He is a man of integrity and is trustworthy, 2-His ability to lead our country financially and militarily, 3-His defense of conservative values we hold dear, especially our families.
Vote Republican, Vote Romney!
*** ALERT ****

Tony Perkins and James Dobson of FRC (Family Research Council) value voters guide that I just received today clearly shows they are supporting Mike Huckabee for President.

Out of all the questions they asked of Republicans and Democrates, Mike Huckabee scored 100% in all questions.

It also shows that Mitt Romney's liberal positions are still showing through him in the questioning.

It says Mitt Romney supports human cloning and embryo destruction. Plus it says Mitt Romney would vote for passage to water down the Federal Marriage act of 1996.

Plus it says Mitt Romney will vote to allow passage of law that allows the Government to take away private land of it's citizens whenever it wants to.

Do Republicans want a liberal like Mitt Romney running our party or a true conservative like Mike Huckabee running our party?

It's clear that Tony Perkins and Dr. James Dobson are supporting conservative Mike Huckabee in the value votes results I just received today.

If you are a conservative who has admired what Tony Perkins and Dr. James Dobson has down for the nation, please go vote tomorrow for Mike Huckabee who they are clearly showing they are supporting.
McCain was a POW. I give him that.  I did 3 tours of Vietnam myself and do not consider myself a hero.  I just did what I had to do.  Yes, I volunteered each time, out of love for my Constitution and Country.  But the Presidential bid is a different story.  McCain has already run his race in life and seeks only a legacy now.  He is clearly left leaning and a RINO.  McCain/Feingold violated the Constitution and a liberal Supreme Court helped him.  Romney is far more conservative and honest.  America is a BUSINESS.  Without us, the world FALLS.  When we offer free medical to everyone in America, remember, nothing is free.  We working people will be paying for it all.  We need to close the borders, enforce immigration laws already on the books, and cut DRASTICALLY Government size and spending, or America will collapse, and take the rest of the world with it.  Mitt Romney understands business and politics both.  We need him to stop the PLUNDER that other countries like Red China (yes, they are still Red China) do to we Americans.  We working class people and, yes, those big businesses that sign so many of our paychecks, need help.  Remember, you never got one job from a poor person!  Free enterprise grows countries, and Mitt Romney is a leader who can make that happen for us and any other country friendly to us.  Everyone else is all talk.  Mitt Romney gets my vote and my family's.  He needs yours too, for your own good.  (Hint:  If the "mainstream media" is on your side, you are a liberal, Mr. McCain).
Republicans; Romney is your only logical candidate. Mike Huckabee is too far behind to even have a chance. John McCain such a backwards candidate that he is basically a Democrat. He crosses the line between Republican and Democrat on every other issue. we can not have a president that cannot pick a side. McCain claim that he is the true conservative, but several of his stances are the opposite of conservative. One example is his plan to grant amnesty to the twelve million aliens in America. This is sure not conservative. Romney is a true conservative that is the one who will do what needs to be done in Washington and in The United States of America. ROMNEY ALL THE WAY!!!
I will be voting for Governor Mitt Romney in Tuesday's Presidential Primary. Join me in supporting this great candidate, whose vision and optimism will transform our country for the better. Governor Romney has a strong record of success, both in the private sector and in government.
Our country faces a vast array of challenges in the years ahead and Governor Romney is the only candidate who's got the experience and wisdom to effectively deal with them all.

I'm 18 years old and am very interested in this election and concerned about this country. I've been listening to and reading about all of the Republican and Democratic candidates, and have found out that Mitt Romney is the only true voice of the Republican party and the best man to lead America. Romney is not perfect, but he has strong family values and morals, is very intelligent, and can face America's challenges and keep America strong and safe and keep alive the principles our country was founded on. I believe he sincerely cares about the future of the United States. The only thing the Democratic candidates care about is "making history." This is not what America needs. They care nothing about our country, and their ideas are dangerous to our country, and their answers to America's challenges are completely wrong. Romney would be a very strong leader-the only Republican candidate that can stand up to the Democrats. He has had first hand experience in the business world, and would be the only candidate to really deal with the American people's biggest concern-the economy. McCain has had no experience in the economy, and he's definately not a true conservative. FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO VOTE FOR HUCKABEE, YOU ARE BASICALLY THROWING YOUR VOTE AWAY AND REALLY GIVING YOUR VOTE TO MCCAIN. PLEASE REALIZE THIS, AND VOTE FOR MITT ROMNEY-THE ONLY TRUE CONSERVATIVE LEADER. I'M PROUD TO GIVE MY VOTE TO MITT ROMNEY. GO ROMNEY!!!!
Mitt Romney doesn't have a chance because McCain has had plenty of time to front load the primaries with cross-over Democratic voters.  The RNC needs to repair the primary process to require all states have closed 'Republican only' primary participants.

WE don't need a 4-star general wannabe in the White House who tries too hard to spin the old "war-on terror/radical Islamic extremism" card.

Use your head's people. That is not even a big issue.

And what will McCain do for the economy that Romney couldn't do better?

McCain is an old dude. And he's short also. And stodgy.

Oh, and why isn't he running for the Democratic party?
He seems to be Republican more in name than where he actually stands on issues.

Vote Real. Vote Romney. Vote for change.
Ask McCain why he was against Prop 200 in AZ.  He has immigration experience in a border state alright.  Experience in doing whatever he can to protect illegal immigration in the state.  He will do the same as president.  The voters didn't listen to McCain.  Prop 200 was approved.
Ask John McCain who Juan Hernandez is and why he is on his staff.  Think OPEN BORDERS.
Ask if he has ever had an attack of short man's syndrome and kicked a hapless kid off his staff because the kid mistakenly set up a 'tall' (normal) podium instead of the 'short' (McCain sized) at a rally.
If Romney does not win, the liberal media will have won.  All the face time they gave McCain will have paid off.  McCain was the media's darling for good reason.  Whether they get him or Hillary it doesn't matter.
McCain in MA?  The dumbest and most arrogant thing I have ever since in an election campaign.  Romney overwhelmingly leads in MA. And Romney just took the lead in CA:  Zogby has Romney 40 and McCain 32 and McCain is campaigning(???) in MA.  What an old fool.  The senile idiot is dancing in the endzone when there is still a lot of time on the clock.  I hope this causes him to lose CA.
Define "Conservative"  . . .I am so sick of the bible banging republicans defining it as Mitt Romney. he was pro-choice, anti gun owner, and he left the state of Massachusets in debt. He was a Lousy one term governor who has no military experience at all.  Now in contrast we have a 25 year proven pro-life candidate, pro gun owner, fiscally responsible and knows the military . . .Duh who would be best?  this is a no-brainer . . .I will take McCain.  . . .The "true Conservative".
I will be at the McCain Victory Party in Phoenix Feb 5 and will be smilng at all of you (laughing really) . McCain will be the winner and all of you that have been trashing McCain will all be eating your words.  By the way, the presidency cannot be bought, somebody tell Romney, Please.  Huckabee is 10 times a better choice than your pro-choice Romney.
Romney Rising!!!
I'm excited to see the latest polls showing Romney surging and McCain slipping.  I'm proud of our fellow Republicans in California--glad you're not listening to the liberal media that wants McCain to win.  I'm glad Reagan conservatism is still alive.  Let's unite and rally behind the only true conservative left in the race for President. Let's all vote Mitt Romney!!
This Californian is voting for Romney in 7 hours!!!
If you know item 1 about politics, you would know that McCain is on the WRONG BALLOT.  That socialist punk needs to get off the Republican ticket and find somewhere else.  Romney is clearly the best choice and he would be ahead but Huckabee can't stand him because he's mormon so huckabee is standing around stealing votes from romney.  I personally hope huckabee goes broke and mccain finds the right ticket.
Let's also point out that every socialist person or organization has endorsed McCain.  hmm... i wonder why.  Even the Governor of Oklahoma, a democrat, endorsed McCain, that with the New York Times.  McCain is a socialist and would get plastered going up against Clinton or Obama.
Linda F:  make sure you stand out of the way if the hotel mistakenly puts up the 'big boy' podium instead of the 'McCain Short Man' podium.  "Big" John gets violently mad about that and who knows what he will do.  I just wonder if he is being fitted for a Napoleon suit today.  They come in Size Very Small.

If you get a chance Linda, ask the Senator why he opposed Prop 200 a couple of years ago.  Did you oppose it too?  If you did are you really a Republican?   Zonies evidently didn't follow McCain's 'leadership' on this issue and voted the Prop in.
Pat in Boston writes that Romney takes his money from others.

Hey Pat!!! Everyone gets their money from someone else.  In the real world Pat that is called a salary.

McCain gets his money from YOU and me, Pat, and his spending money from his drug addict wife's fortune.  That makes him a better candidate?
The thought of a Democrat taking office, is scary. Despite the fact that the war in Iraq has been a fiasco. We are on the offensive, and need to continue to be againt these Jihadists. The Democrats want to take us out of Iraq, which would leave terrorist organization an oppurtunity to recover, and follow us right to our soil. Clinton and Obama cannot protect us. McCain and Romney can. In the times we live in, a Republican is needed, not a Democrat.
