Paul speaks at WV convention

From NBC's Gabriel Herman
Ron Paul was the first Republican to speak this morning at the West Virginia GOP convention, which today awards 18 winner-take-all delegates. In his speech that stressed strict dedication to the US Constitution, Paul addressed limiting government and said, “If you are a true conservative, and a true constitutionalist, and understand the limited scope government should be, then we really don’t need the 16th Amendment. We really don’t need the IRS. We really don’t need the income Tax. That should be eliminated.”

Paul rejected US involvement with international organizations including the IMF, WTO, and NAFTA, and he labeled them “entangling alliances.” Of US involvement in foreign wars under United Nations’ mandate, Paul stated, “We are supposed to only go to war with a declaration of war. The purpose of the declaration of war is so that the people, the Congress, and everybody gets behind it. So if there is a need for war, and we agree to go to war, we go to war, we build up, we win it, and we get it over with. That is what we need to do."

Maybe he should have been defending Wesley Snipes....

I almost forgot.....
I thought it was a three man race....
Ron Paul is still in it......
I like monetary policy.  He is the only one with a real plan to get us out of the recession that we are already in.
I have been a liberal all my life. However, when I hear Ron Paul talk about the state of our country, the principles our founding fathers/mothers forged our Democracy from, and his radical ideas about govt.. involvement in our daily lives I have to stop and wonder......could he actually be onto something here?  In listening to all the republican candidates discuss the tangible issues that are facing our country, it seem RP is the only candidate who has the courage, the commitment, and the honesty to address several hard-core issues that are facing our country. Where are the true patriots?  Do they go by the name of Exxon, Shell, & Mobile?  Corporations are the new riders of the apocalypse that we have to fear.  RP maybe a sideshow to some but his message is clear-we need to return to the values and beliefs and actions of our founding fathers.
It's funny that people will clip coupons, and shop around for bargains, and get excited about a tax refund or a $600 rebate check, but when someone comes along offering to eliminate taxes on their income, they say "No thanks, I'd rather vote for someone who will take even more of my money, and give it to Blackwater and Haliburton so they can invade, destroy, and rebuild a country that never threatened us."
Paul supporters...be sure to attend your precinct convention to get the delgates!! This is why he has gotten many more delegates than the popular vote suggests!!
Ron Paul is right -- if we repealed the income tax, the government would still take in the same amount of revenue it did just 10 years ago.  Was government too small in 1997?
No income tax?  Then how do we pay for the security of our nation?  With good intentions?  Ron Paul is a nut.
The More I hear from this Ron Paul guy the more I like him. Why isnt he getting more face time on television?  Mc-Romney are both empty headed liberals and the Shuckster is just that a Huckster.

Ron Paul appears to be the only Conservitive left in the race. Why is he not getting the support of his party?
Let's talk seriously about NOVEMBER (http://nationalscold.blogspot.com). Ron Paul's spiel about the war and the economy (before the stuff about returning to the gold standard) was good stuff at the first handful of Republican debates, but now he's just a distraction. And why are so many 9/11 conspiracy theorists Paul supporters???
You Romney / McCain backers who agrue about who is the "real " conservative - here he is.

I'll vote for Ron Paul today, change my party affiliation, and take a 3- hour shower to scrub that GOP corporate-tool stink off me.
THE only canidate who's sole ambition is to return this country back to the wealth, prominence, and respect that it once held.
It it my sincere hope that America will listen to Dr. Ron Paul and vote for him.  If we do not, dark days loom for the United States.  More wars, more taxation, loss of personal freedom, bigger federal government, continued devaluation of the Dollar...the list goes on an on.  Why are the Citizens of this Country so blind, and cannot see the writing on the wall and are willing to put up with more of the same.

It astonishes me.

A vote for Ron Paul is NOT a lost vote...it is a vote for Truth, Freedom and Liberty.  If you don't believe in those things...then vote for McCain or Hillary..because either of them will definately continue to dilute the Constitution.
I must say, Ron Paul and Mike Huckabee have very common ideas on what it is to be a true republican and on how to help our economy/the state of our domestic tranquility. Very interesting! It's a shame their messages were not heard by more in the past few months...then again, the media didn't give them half a chance in public forums like the debates, etc...

I am surprised you haven't made fun of Dr. Paul in this piece. You usually have a condescending tone when you speak of Dr. Paul's ideas. It is a shame people like you are journalists.
Hey Jerry... do you ever read your posts before clicking "submit"?  I mean, honestly... what the heck are you even trying to say this time?

Ron Paul should have been the obvious choice for the GOP.  It's too bad republicans have to have thier opinions handed to them by Drudge, Hannity or Limbaugh, otherwise they would have reached that conclusion themselves.  I suppose, like Jerry, they're all destined for the dustbin of politics.  This is what happens when you relate to your political party the same way you relate to your favorite baseball team.

I'm a Democrat, but I surely didn't want to see the Republican party implode by trying to hang on to the war because of thier rediculous "11th commandment."  A one party system is the surest way to tyranny.
Jerry,

Your snide comments remind me of why I left Corpus Christi, always asking for bigger and bigger government.

And for what it's worth, we only need the IRS with its progressive income taxes if we're to fund a well-financed master.
Thank you for reporting this without bias. Dr. Paul has been the victim of an obscene Media Blackout since day 1– when they do give him coverage, he is the “long-shot” candidate, or the GOP “Maverick” — or any number of fringe words… that to the average voter makes it seem like he can not win.

He is the ONLY candidate that really wants to return this country to the Free Nation we once were. Reduce the Police State, reduce Government interference, restore our economy and falling currency, and protect individual liberties…no wonder the mainstream media/corporations don’t want this guy to win.

If you look on cnn.com’s election center– they have pictures of every candidate remaining, EXCEPT FOR RON PAUL! They just have his name in tiny lettering under McCain and Romney— how is this legal? I encourage everyone who has any stock/shares in CNN or FAUX News to dump them immediately– maybe when those companies lose billions in market cap they will see that the American People will not tolerate their bias.
As I write this the Market is down anoter 249 points, yesterday is was down over 100. No GOP or Dem. candidate has offered anything close to a solution to this cycle of economic wasting our economy is suffering other than Ron Paul. Regardless of what happened on  Super Tuesday the message that Ron Paul has delivered is now being heard and by convention time the country will be SCREAMING for Solutions not Straight-Talk-alzheimer's or Look-at-mitty-so-pretty or I-be-a-smoke-a-bomber or I-garinsh-you-meds. Get Real we are in Deep and we need Ron Paul's action to save not only the GOP but the country.
"No income tax?  Then how do we pay for the security of our nation?  With good intentions?  Ron Paul is a nut."

With sales taxes, excise taxes, corporate taxes, and import taxes, as well as few others I'm probably forgetting. For example, where I live, there's no state income tax and no municipal tax either, yet the city is flourishing. There are ways to finance government without digging into John Q. Public's paycheck.
For all his patriotic rhetoric, Ron Paul wants to give the enemy exactly what it wants: for our men to run away under fire, to have defeat imposed on them by their own civilian political leadership, for America to lose the war in Iraq.

As for declaring war and constitional strictness, Thomas Jefferson, the ultimate strict constructionist, sent the Navy against the Barbary Pirates, who much resembled today's state-sponsored terrorists, without a declaration of war.  John Adams before him fought an undeclared war with Revolutionary France.  The US has fought countless undeclared engagements since then as well.  Paul needs to pull his nose out of books and his head out of his imaginary world and rejoin reality.

It's a dangerous world out there and running away from battle does not make our country safer.
Mark my words, it will be Hitlery vs McManiac in November, the illusion of democracy continues. :(
Mark my words, it will be Hitlery vs McManiac in November, the illusion of democracy continues. :(
Today I voted for Ron Paul, it was a tough decision, Romney vs Paul...I feel Romney needs support to beat the Liberal McCain, but I had to vote for the Best candidate...  Let's hope it's Romney vs Paul and not Romney vs McCain......This is a critical time for our Nation but i'm tired of voting for the lesser of two evils, so this election I voted for whom I think has the best plan for our Nation and Children...
   GEAUX RON PAUL
I rode the TRAX train in Salt Lake City with about 30 other Ron Paul supporters last night and we stood in front of the Engery Solutions Arena before the Utah Jazz game.  There is a ton of support for Dr. Paul at the grassroots level, even in Mitt's Mormon state of Utah.

Grant, you ought to be asking why anyone would support McCain or Romney since they are proponents of a war which is largely unpopular with the American public and only tends to benefit corporations that are awarded non-competitive contracts such as Halliburton and Blackwater.
pat huntington should do more research before he posts. Our income tax ONLY covers interest on the national debt. War is paid for by corporate taxes, which Ron Paul is NOT advocating eliminating. However, he IS advocating eliminating the national debt., and thus the NEED for income tax.

sounds totally bonkers to me. We should all appreciate the level of spending our government is jacking up for our grandchildren. Bush and his other true conservatives understand that increasing the government's involvement in your life and increasing spending is the key principle of republicanism....
"No income tax?  Then how do we pay for the security of our nation?  With good intentions?  Ron Paul is a nut."

Typical clueless person.  What security?  The Muslims have been trying to take over the world for the last 1400 years.  If they are to succeed it will be by converting people to their idolatrous religion, not by flying airplanes into buildings!  Just go in and get your collar and chain adjusted, Pat.
Why is Ron Paul still in the race? A very good question. Perhaps it is because he raised the most money in the 4th quarter of all the Republicans. Or perhaps because he came in 2nd in Nevada, Maine & Louisiana. Or maybe because he received more money from active and retired military in the 4th quarter than all the other candidates combined (Rep & Dem).
Eliminating taxes would mean we would have to reduce the size of the federal government- can you say Conservative/Republican principles 101.
Why doesn't the media report on him you ask? Because the liberal media is supporting Hillary!! They know that Ron Paul can beat her. He wasn't tricked when it came time to vote against the war. I personally want to vote for the guy that can't be tricked or bought and votes the right way the first time and every time. Hillary can easily beat McNamedropper and Flipflopney and the media knows it, that is why they push them on the sheeple in this country.
The reason no one else speaks about elimination of the income tax is because the income taxes are used to buy votes and pay back favors. We pay social security and Medicare tax to fund entitlement programs, we pay a gas tax to fund road construction we pay numerous other taxes to fund other federal programs. The income tax goes into the general funds and most of it is spent on pork projects and other federal giveaway programs. How many assistants to the assistants of the secretary of the secretary of the assistant to the congressman do we need?  That is where your money is spent and both sides know they can buy votes and deliver jobs to their campaign staffs with your tax dollars.
I can't believe how uneducated some of the voting puplic is today especially with the internet. Someone called Ron Paul a nut because he wants to do away with the income tax. Read Dr. Paul's message people! He has stated numerous times that first you have to cut government spending BEFORE you can slash taxes. He has also laid out a complete economic package to SOLVE the crisis we are in today. I didn't say AID or Temporary Help, I said SOLVE. What other candidate can claim that?

Ron Paul has the answers to the hard questions. Do yourself a favor and at least read his platform with an open mind BEFORE forming an opion based soley on what the media has reported. Calling someone a nut simply because you are not educated yourself on the issues speaks volumes of your character.
Pat, Phil, Leo

I respectfully ask you to go do some research. You all use the word "NUT", it's because you do not KNOW. If I were you I would look at the new 3.1 Trillion US budget released this week. It is true some is nut but how can it be the Guy that tells to STOP SPENDING, CUT SPENDING, ReOpen all the available Military bases in your state closed or scaled back in the 80's to allow the relocation of our protection to other countries. We still can spend 600 billion a year on the Military and eliminate the Income Tax. Mobil paid 40 Billion in taxes this year and there are 200 other companies that will pay more than 10 billion!!
SAVE MONEY, SPEND LESS VOTE RON PAUL
With roots in the Mountain State, I do hope West Virginia looks closely at Ron Paul's stance on eminent domain abuse, which West Virginian property owners have suffered terribly from.  Ron Paul stands for your property rights!  West Virginia has had enough big business in collusion with government
to steal from its people.  The time to fight back is now, West Virginia!
You are absolutely right Phil on funding the government.  There was no income tax till 1913, and thats how the government funded itself.
Leo, I feel the need to clarify Dr. Paul's position in regards to national security.  He is a non-interventionalist, not an isolationist.  There is a big difference between the two.  The founding fathers understood the idea of mark and reprisal, a mechanism for attacking pirates.  As for the US government going after terrorists, Dr. Paul supported going after Bin Laden in Torah Borah (which Bush did not do), but not fighting an undefined enemy in Iraq and Afghanistan and engaging in costly nation-building.

Rhetoric aside, Dr. Paul has received more miltary contributions than all other Republican candidates combined.  The troops understand that Dr. Paul will judiciously commit them to action only when it is warranted.  Running away is a PR term that the Bush administration used (i.e. "cut and run") to try and quell intelligent discussion on the issue.
Ron Paul should be the next President of the United States! I am a registered Democrat, however, I voted for Ron Paul today! Yes, he will be our next President. Isn't everyone wanting change?, well there you go...he is the man for the job! How is that people complain about paying taxes and when his plan to abolish it, everyone thinks he's nuts?! Come on people, get with the program...It's a shame that the media has a huge influence and that Dr. RP didn't get as much time on the air like the other candiates. Vote for Ron Paul 2008!
Breaking: Dobson Slams McCain on Ingraham
Released as a Statement Ingraham read over the air.

I am deeply disappointed the Republican Party seems poised to select a nominee who did not support a Constitutional amendment to protect the institution of marriage, voted for embryonic stem cell research to kill nascent human beings, opposed tax cuts that ended the marriage penalty, has little regard for freedom of speech, organized the Gang of 14 to preserve filibusters in judicial hearings, and has a legendary temper and often uses foul and obscene language.

I am convinced Sen. McCain is not a conservative, and in fact, has gone out of his way to stick his thumb in the eyes of those who are. He has sounded at times more like a member of the other party. McCain actually considered leaving the GOP caucus in 2001, and approached John Kerry about being Kerry’s running mate in 2004. McCain also said publicly that Hillary Clinton would make a good president. Given these and many other concerns, a spoonful of sugar does NOT make the medicine go down. I cannot, and will not, vote for Sen. John McCain, as a matter of conscience.

But what a sad and melancholy decision this is for me and many other conservatives. Should Sen. McCain capture the nomination as many assume, I believe this general election will offer the worst choices for president in my lifetime. I certainly can’t vote for Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama based on their virulently anti-family policy positions. If these are the nominees in November, I simply will not cast a ballot for president for the first time in my life. These decisions are my personal views and do not represent the organization with which I am affiliated. They do reflect my deeply held convictions about the institution of the family, about moral and spiritual beliefs, and about the welfare of our country.
I feel bad for ill-informed people like Pat here.

"No income tax?  Then how do we pay for the security of our nation?  With good intentions?  Ron Paul is a nut. - pat huntington ny "

Our income tax does not pay for our military. Do some research. The income tax account for less than 40% of the revenues our Federal Govt recieves. It is not needed. Do some reading on the Federal Reserve while you are at it Pat.
The Income Tax is used exclusively to pay the interest
on the money the Federal Reserve prints and loans to the government. The Federal Resetve is a Private Bank and not associated with the government. What are a private group of bankers doing with the People's Money? Why are private bankers setting monetary policy for our county and not our government?  They have never been audited since inception in 1913. Their meetings are private and no one really knows who the players are. If the government printed our money there would be no interest therefore no need for Income Tax.
This is what's nuts, not Ron Paul!!
Paul is the only conservative running.
Lawrence from Melbourne, Florida, said it perfectly!  I use to vote for the lesser of the two evils and all we have is evil.  Ron Paul wants to go back to what the United States was at its founding.  Less government, more freedom.  It's simple.  A vote or Ron Paul is NOT A LOST VOTE!!!  He is doing quite well in the race, but the media pays no attention to him.  He isn't "their choice" for president.

I would like to add one more comment.  2 weeks ago it was announced that we had entered into a 20 billion dollat arms deal with Saudi Arabia.  We are selling them 20 billion dollars worth of our high tech weapons, bombs etc.  Where's the outrage? Have you ever heard of a Saudi Army or Navy?  Lest we forget that 15 of the 911 hijackers were Saudi, Bin Laden is a Saudi. You don't think this is going to come back and bite us?  Ron Paul is the only candidate to say, This is nuts, what's going on here? Now tell me who's nuts. No wonder he receives the most support from our Military.  WAKE UP!!
I like that Ron Paul would only use our military for threats to OUR national security. I am tired of paying for the national security of Isreal, Korea, Japan, Germany...

The United States is deeply in debt and we continue to give money away to Saudi Arabia and Pakistan on the condition that they buy from our military corporations. Considering that the 9/11 terrorists came from Saudi Arabia and Osama bin Laden is hiding in Pakistan I find this VERY disturbing.
The fact that the U.S. media, mostly controlled by ashkanazi jews, refuses to barely mention Dr. Paul should be the first reason to vote for him above and beyond the aforementioned obvious ones. To the fool that called him a 'nut'....please return yourself to the place where your ancestors eeked out a living before much better and braver men founded this Republic.
For those of you who thing that Ron Paul is a NUT, you are lazy. Why not do some homework before putting your foot in your mouth.

How were things in the US in 1998? Pretty good wouldn't you say? Well if we eliminated all payroll taxes and the IRS we would still have enough revenue to pay for everything we had in 1998. Why, because the government collects other forms of reevenue from excise taxes, tarriffs, and other fees at the ports of entry.

How do you do it, gradually. Over 4 years, you freeze the budget and start eliminating the payroll tax to match the freezes. In the last year, you use the other revenue to fund the government.

Just by eliminating our war mentality - you can save trillions of dollars over the next 4 years.

The problem is that those making money from our taxes (oil, military-complex and the media) do not want to give Ron Paul time because he is right. If he's right, their realities change over the next 4 years and they don't want to do that. It's funny how we are against welfare for poor people but we have huge corporate welfare in the form of tax-breaks.
Grant,

You asked

"...why are so many 9/11 conspiracy theorists Paul supporters?"

They are attracted to Paul for his transparency in government ideals.

I'm not a big fan of those folks, but he's got the platform that's attractive to them.
Let me me see if I can explain this a bit further...

If Ron Paul is so great and he is just so appealing to all of you, why is he basically fallen below 5% in most polling?

I'll tell you why....

He supports less government (which I support)
he supports less taxes or elimination( which I support the fair tax proposed by Neal Boortz)
He supports the freedom that we have in this country (unlike some of you liberals out there who think we are in Nazi Germany).

But he does not support the war on terror....

That and the last debate he was in he blamed everything but the Steelers losing to Jacksonville that night on the war in Iraq....
To all the pat huntingtons in the US.The answer to your good question, "how do we pay for the security of
our nation?" We pay for all Government 0verhead including security by collecting TARIFFS on other countries that import, instead of giving them a free ride, that is how government was paid for in the earlier days of this country, except there was not as much goverment spending and there was not as much imports comming into this country as there are to day. Also we need to stop cancelling the debts owed to to this country, example we canceled a 12 billion dollars owed to the US from Russia, Why? South America has had their Billions of dollars canceled many times over the last 4 decades. You need to understand the Government produces nothing it TAKES FROM Its People to pay for things that do not benifit its citizens. Rome Fell because its governments spending was 0ver 30% of its GNP. We are there NOW. Reduce Government, reduce spending, Get ride of the tax directly on the People you will put money back in the pockets, where it will go back into the Economy  here in the USA, not in the pockets of the forgien enconomy. When you give the government the power to tax you, you give them the power to steal for their own agenda's in the name of you. WAKE up Pat Huntingtons of the US.Research History the reason for the fall of Big Governments. Yes RON PAUL IS A NUT, BUT HE IS THE ONLY NUT THAT REPRESENTS THE TRUE INTEREST OF THE PEOPLE OF THIS NATION, INSTEAD OF THE INTEREST OF A PARTY (AGENDIA). AREN'T YOU TIRED OF THE PARTY ALL CITIZENS HAVE HAD TO ENDEAR OVER THE LAST 6 DECADES. TAKE YOUR PARY HATS OFF AND VOTE FOR REAL CHANGE THAT WILL BENIFIT YOU, YOU. YOU, NOT ANY PARTY.
Folks, while I respect your unyielding support and loyalty to the Ron Paul cause and appreciate your passion in regards to his stance on the constitution, etc., I have to wonder when you're going to give up or what you're going to do when he doesn't win.  Assuming that Paul sticks to his word and remains a republican (meaning he does not run as an independent), who will you vote for in the general?  I would think that Paul, of all people, would encourage you to use your civil rights and fulfill the patriotic responsibility to vote for SOMEBODY, even if he is personally not an option. Currently Paul is polling at less than double digit levels in most states.  I realize that you say that polls don't really reach Paul supporters because they mostly use cell phones, etc.  But the races that have already been concluded show the same results- he doesn't win or even come close in most locations.

I'm curious about those of you who claim he has come in second in three states.  I know he did in Nevada- where no one else competed except Romney, but he (Paul) still only got 14% of the vote to Romney's 51%.  The only information I can find for Maine shows him in third (barely) behind McCain and Romney again dominating with more than 50%. Did he move up to second sometime at the end of the count?  Also, Louisiana held a Caucus, but the actual primary that counts for something isn't until February 9.  Perhaps this is why nobody but Ron Paul fans are reporting this placement?

I really am wondering.  Perhaps one of you diligent Ron Paul fans can enlighten me? :)

Happy voting to all who can today!
Ron Paul is offering the pure pursuit of Liberty...
Vote for Virtue...
Vote for Courage...
Vote for Principles...
Vote Ron Paul!
