More Clinton 'spin'

Posted: Tuesday, February 05, 2008 3:39 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Andrea Mitchell and Andy Merten
In the Clinton campaign's second conference call with reporters in the last two days, communications director Howard Wolfson said -- at least four times -- that "the results tonight will be inconclusive."

"The results will be inconclusive. Sen. Obama will do well in some parts of the country; in other parts of the country, Sen Clinton will do well. So this will be just another step, although a large step, on the road to Denver and choosing a nominee."

Asked if there won't be momentum and bragging rights coming out of the returns, Wolfson joked: "Sure, whoever wins New York can be declared the winner."

He then went on to MEGA-spin outcomes in Massachusetts and California. According to Wolfson, Massachusetts right now is "tight as a tick," and since Sen. Kennedy has what he called a "machine" -- without mentioning the Boston mayor's machine working overtime for Clinton -- Wolfson said if Obama doesn't win Massachusetts it will be a "disappointment." In fact, Clinton has held a double-digit lead in most Massachusetts polls up until now.

Similarly, he tried to suggest that if Obama doesn't win California it will be a "disappointment" because of the Maria Shriver/Oprah endorsements and campaign events -- even though polls have shown Clinton with a solid lead in the state until now.

Wolfson said the California campaign will be close, and he suspects it will be a very late night. He pointed out that Obama has put considerable resources into California and has had great surrogates.

Wolfson also made the campaign's latest argument that Michigan and Florida delegates should be seated, and when asked about the other Democratic candidates didn't even have their names on the ballot in Michigan, he said: "I think they removed their names from the ballot because they didn't think they would fare well."

And he announced the Clinton campaign has accepted a FOX debate on Feb 11th in Washington DC that would  air on local FOX broadcast TV in DC/Virginia/Maryland suburbs, prior to the voting there on Feb. 12. Wolfson said that Clinton and Obama should debate once a week -- from now on.

In fact, Clinton said this herself in an interview with an affiliate TV station this morning. "I think we should debate once a week, because we're just getting down to the two of us. That's only been the case  for the last week. And there are a lot of differences between us that need to be explored, and voters need to have information."

I don't think they're spinning.  She just accepted a debate on FOX.  Obviously, she thinks she needs to spend more time with him one on one to put it away.  That means Ohio, Texas and Pennsylvania.  She says she wants him every week going forward.  Is she just selling wolf tickets, or does she think she whipped him in the last debate?
While the Clinton camp is spinning this article and the coverage off it is dripping with the anti-HRC bias we have seen in the media.  The media is looking for anything that happens tonight to state that Dems don't want HRC as the nominee.  I am not saying she will win but if she wins CA and loses MO the story will be well why did she lose MO; if she wins CA and MO and loses MA the story will be why did she lose MA...
You can't hold her responsible for the recent comments. She's been lying (excuse me... spinning) for 35 years now. Undoubtedly her staff gets the good things that she has accomplished with the bad things Bubbah has done over the years.

This is an unsupported claim from a Clinton supporter on voting day - what took him so long to remember? I call bullsh!t.
Sounds like somebody who's read the exit polls and knows that Clinton is winning CA and MA -- but not by much.  Why else would they describe Obama losses there as "disappointments?"

As for MI and FL, I'm surprised you media guys aren't howling about this breathtakingly unfair delegate grab by the Clinton people.  (You should be; makes me wonder for a miniute if all these crazies are right who say you're in the tank for Hillary!  Just kidding.)  The other candidates keep their word and take their names off the ballot and/or don't campaign, and she now says they should count?  Are you kidding me?
Seriously, what the fck?  This isnt supposed to be the NY Post or FoxNews.  I voted for Obama but MSNBC's coverage of the Democratic campaigns has been disgracefully unbalanced.  At least put a disclaimer on the "articles" letting readers know that this is purely editorializing and not reporting.  I mean, did you really just write an article about the Clinton spin machine and basically thumb your nose at it because it tried to put a spin on the situation?  Good lord.
I think the debate schedule as it stands is enough.  In addition, Michigan and Florida knew the score when they decided to move up the date...think this is all a 'political move' on part of Clinton when she knows the others did what they agreed to...shame on her!
I think that those delegates should now be forced to wait until there is a bona fide nominee...that way, it cannot look like someone trying to fix the election in Clinton's favor!
D ANDREWS, read your own advice moron...Florida election laws dont allow for removal of names for ballots...

Clinton Trolls posting again
It is about time that a woman run this country and that we get another Clinton back in the White House to clean up Jr's mess just like his dad made!
We all know that Hillary has done a poor job of not being divisive within the party until lately. At the same time we all know that she is a brilliant woman and politician. We all know that Barack is charasmatic, brilliant, and inspiring. At the same time we know that we need details in order to place faith in his ability to deliver on this message of hope. The most unfortunate thing about this race,is that we have two very solid candidates running at the same time. It is the first time that has happened in AGES. On top of it we have historical implications here. It will be most unfortunate if this campaign is in any way decided by feminism, chauvanism, or racism. While we're at it don't call too many names, or be so divisive democrats...regardless of who wins, there is still a Republican by the name of McCain who appeals to independents likely with the nomination. Dems will need all hands on deck to insure a win. Let's talk about what the candidates do, and not their spin machines.
The Clinton's were scum bags then & they're scum bags still.
Here we go again !! MSNBC and obvious OBAMA bias..
Man, Hillary must not like Obama and his surrogates going around the country giving stump speeches and holding rallies that have come close to reaching 20,000 in number from coast to coast to have one of her mouth pieces go in front of the national media and say they need to debate more. They see that as a challenge and see the nomination slipping from their grasp. It won't be won tonight, but it will come close. I think some of these races will have interesting results tonight.
The inevitability of "Hillary Rodham Clinton, Democratic Nominee for President" is gone.  Sorry that they have to actually try and win this campaign instead of having it handed to them.

A debate every week?  Wow, that'll get old fast!
Hillary’s line about taking a Clinton to clean up after a Bush is a catchy piece of sloganeering.   I doubt the young viewer who asked the debate question found it very satisfactory, though.  The questioner pointed out that there had yet to be a presidential election in her adult life without a Bush or a Clinton as one of the two major choices.  We like to think of ourselves as a model of democracy to hold up to the rest of the world.  Why are we acting like we have two royal families, and what does that say those who look to us to see how a democracy should function?
This out of control spin by the Clintons on the afternoon of Super Tuesday tells me their exit polling has them falling short on their expectations.

Watch what comes out in about 1.5 hours (currently 4:45 PM EST) and if it is more debates and/or clutching at low expectations you should know it is or will be curtains for the Clintons.

John Farrell
"Slaughter yourself and save the Republicans..." What a desperate human soul!
And did someone say that we are voting with our hearts by voting for Obama? Sure, only if our heads are full of lies and deceptions from Hillary.
Obama does not have the leadership solely because you guys did not hear him say the solutions you want to ehar only proves that we are voting with our hearts -- basically on what candidates say rather than giving them he chance to build a strong, united government to fullfill his obligations to the voters. Hillary, on the other hand, will say what she thinks are teh best issues so "voters by the heart" will feel better, despite all of her lies and deceptions.
If she really had the solutions that impress voters, then there is no need for ehr to lie or deceive us. She has to be upfront and just state her solutions nd explain her past failrues/mistakes, then hope that voters udnerstood and will vote for her.
These are the stories to read. Forget the external mainstream media polls. Watch instead the maneuverings of Senior Campaign Operatives. Ask yourself why is the Hillary Clinton Campaign (a) downplaying Super Tuesday results (b) locking in for a protracted battle and (c) calling for more debates. What is happening is that OBAMA'S Campaign is spreading like wild fire, changing hearts and minds across the country. The Clinton Machine realizes that their dynasty is on the line. The Clinton Machine is also attempting to sell the notion of OBAMA for V.P. to stem the tide against Hillary hoping that some Dems will buy it. The challenge for Hillary will be, if she is defeated, will she support the OBAMA Ticket in the fall against the Republicans or will the Clinton Machine prepare for a second assault in 2012?
Here's the thing...Before we had the internet and a 24 hr news cycle, you could get away with spin as the clintons did in the early 90's. They used it to great effect. But today we are much more informed and political pundits have been quick to point out spin tactics when they see them. The fact that we all know what spin is shows how far we come in understanding how our political process works....or should I say doesn't work.

Turn the page...get fired up this time and not spun again!
I suspect Hillary is doing well in CA.  My reason is my polling place was deserted this morning (Far more than normal) leading me to believe more people than normal filed absentee ballots which I expect to lean heavily in her favor as they were likely cast well before the public's mood started shifting.

On the other hand I don't see her volunteers around but the Obama camp was out in good force making an impression.

Of course we won't be seeing CA results until tomorrow morning but I can't wait to read the absentee vs polling data along with the demographic data.
My goodness, with all these impending primaries, Clinton must rushing to the nearest available camera so they can catch her tear ducts opening.
I like Obama but am getting turned off by his HOLIER-THAN-THOU stance. Clinton spin machine? I'm smart enough to pick up that he's played into the same game of OLD politics, too--so please don't go traipsing across the country talking about "change"--as if you're the only untainted candidate in this race.

I refuse to ride the wave, and go along with this mob/herd mentality. Instead, I will look at the issues, their capabilities, and make a thoughtful decision on whom to support. And NOT just because everyone seems to be so enamoured by this lofty speeches/promises of "CHANGE" and the media depiction of a MESSIAH in the coming years.
Are you people CRAZY!!!!!!...Look what Bush did and youre willing to hand our country over to someone without experence because he's black and youre scared to say anything against him?...If you elect him then u may as well kiss everything you got and your butt goodbye...spin this
Women should vote Clinton simply because "they may never have another chance"??? So, by that logic, blacks should vote Obama because they may never have another chance? Absolutely ridiculous. You should be choosing your candidate based on the issues, not their gender. Clinton's campaign is most definitely "Rove-like" with all their spinning of the facts and it really frightens me. It's going to be "look the other way, Americans" just like Bush & Co. was. The fact that she still has never admitted that voting for the war in '02 was a mistake, should be a warning to all. This lady makes mistakes and when the truth is presented, still will not admit them. By the way, "35 years of experience"? She wishes.
THE ONLY THING THAT I HAVE TO SAY ABOUT HILLARY IS THAT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE BETTER WAKE UP.BECAUSE IF GOD HAVE MERCY ON US, SHE SHOULD HAPPEN TO WIN.
AS THEY SAY "HONEY YOU HAVEN'T SEEN NOTHING YET!
it's amazing what the billarys would do to win, I just hope that before ignorant people put them into the whit house once again, that they can explain to the nation, what was Bill doing the first time the world trade center was hit.....if he wasn't to busy doing his favorite pass time, maybe bush wouldn't have inharited 911.  Enough of the bushes and clintons already....as for billary, they are such a lying and selfish pair...they deserve each other.......I wonder what crap woul bill do in the white house this time......and it should be unconstitutional for him to go back there........
obama u have my vote........and even if they steal this election away, I'ld always hold you in highest honor...Stay, as honest, and sweet as you are and for God sakes stay away, from those high rolling crooks in washington. especially the ones that will stop at nothing to get what they want!
if I hear one more damn person say they are going to vote for Hillary "because I am a woman and she is a woman"  = aaauuuggHHhhhh

OR:

one more ignorant Obama supporter say "he was against the war from the beginning"  (you may wanna check his votes there buddy)
This was a conference call with Wolfson, so I don't know if there was a video feed, but if there was, the NBC crew would have noticed that Wolfson's pants were on fire.
I know a lot of people that would vote for Hillary and not Obama.

If the Obama people keep showing the disrespect they have been towards the Clinton people and he wins... the Clinton people will go to Obama!
What experience does she have exactly?  Spin?  Distortion? Taking money from lobbyists?
I have turned off the t.v. so many times this week when your so called journalists give yet more free air time to Obama, what gives? scared a hardworking, intelligent woman could be better than a man? come on be fair, we are in the 21st. century.
Thats not really fair.  Now Barack has 2 bad options: 1.  Don't debate; let camp Hillary spin the media towards "Obama's not ready" rhetoric.
2.  Do debate; let Hillary herself falsely throw accusations around and force Barack in defense mode therefore making herself look strong.

On the most important election day in my lifetime, leave it to team Hillary to distract us from today.

Here's what I read... "Penn and Wolfson are desperate."
I'm not sure why everyone keeps saying Hillary is broke. Senator Clinton has about $18 Million in cash on hand -- about half as much as Barack, true, but  significantly less debt that Barack. [http://www.opensecrets.org/pres08/index.asp] Last time I checked, that's still a chunk of change.

Hillary wants to debate Obama because the spin machine of the press has YET to dig into Obama or press him on his substance. They take all of his grandstanding talk of hope and change at face value and when Senator Clinton calls him on it, you all runs crying saying that she's devisive and dishonest. Give me a break! Visit www.vote-smart.org and check out the voting records for yourselves. Or, would you rather the TV just TELL you what to think?
As a moderate republican (I hear you snickering out there!)... it's kinda funny to watch the other side of the aisle bicker about their candidates.  So much passion!  It's nice to know that we Republicans haven't cornered the market on dysfunction.  What I find myself wondering is: 'With a US population of about 300 million, is this the best we have to offer in terms of candidates???'.  Good luck to the Dems.  Hope you guys work it out.  There is much at stake at home and abroad.  Figure it out and send the best candidate for ALL of us (I realize that there's a good chance you'll end up in the driver's seat come next January).  We Republicans aren't the Evil Empire.  We just subscribe to a different view.  And yes, we've got some nut cases that make us all look like total idiots... but you've got 'em as well.  One this is certain... we better learn how to work things out together or the USA is destined to fracture and fold.  Good luck!
Has anyone else wondered why the voters would trust her or her campaign to tell the truth when for the 3rd time now in this campaign they've gone back on their agreements and commitments regarding the RULES of the nomination -- Nevada, Michigan and Florida.

It's a question of honesty and trust and I'm appalled that no one in the media has had the guts to do more than make slight mention of it.
If Nader enters the race, I'll vote for him with pride because I'll know he isn't owned by the pro-Israel lobby and its mouth piece, the MSM.
Barack threw down the gauntlet at the 2004 Convention and followed it up with a pre-emptive first-strike announcement of his candidacy. Hillary's fatal flaw is Bill, and I'm sad to say that many of us are tired of Bill and the consistent chaos that "coincidentally" seems to follow him. Bill the First Guy will be very different from Bill the Statesman. I'll tolerate the Statesman but I'm weary of the guy and ready to say "Bye-bye Bill".
Voters need information about NAFTA, SPP, Mexico-Manitoba Super Highway, Federal Reserve Reform, Kyoto, Net Neutrality, Copyright Reform, Constitutional Enforcement & Oversight and many other issues which they haven't even been glossed over by either cadidate.

Yeah, HealthCare is the big vote snatcher, but both candidates need to add more substance, spice and balance to their platforms. Meat and potatoes is great, but eating the same dish every day is a drag.

And another thing: the questions in these debates suck - let's try and put the candidates on the spot and see what they're made of. I think the American people would appreciate an open discussion for once, as opposed to the pre-scripted ones.

There's no spin here, Camp Clinton is just downplaying ST, in case of a poor showing.
Thank-you Norman - Washington DC!!!!! I was wondering if I was the only person alive on planet earth.
"hardworking, intelligent woman"?

You forgot heartless, cold, calculating, vengeful, wicked and just downright evil. Those alligator tears don't fool me. Hillary being a woman has nothing to do with my distrust / dislike of her. As far as I am concerned, she is an asexual demon sent from Hell to destroy us. I am sure that Bill feels the same way.
I am disappointed by the unfair treatment of Senator Clinton by the press.  The press does not give her campaign the same benefit of the doubt that they give Obama's.  The media has been very one-sided in its criticism.  Do your job as journalists.  Keep it fair and unbiased.
Well this country is going to feel really stupid if obama wins, and the white house is guarded by the nation of islam, every black person I know, I ask why are you voting for obama, they don't have an answer, so my conclusion is that they are just voting for him because he is black.  Well I'am black and I'am not voting for him.  I can truly say that most black people have no loyalty.
I love MSNBC and I agree that they are negative-Hillary and that should stop!!!  Also, the minute one says I hate this and I hate that... that person says it enough.. (hater for oneself).. We should really focus on the reality.  I think both Hillary and Obama will do well as a president than Bush 1 or 2.  Most political system is about the same in the end.  But, Clitons will do about the same or better that we know of.  We should really think what unknown can do for this country.  People should not do the same.. we like fresh start... there will be 50-50 chance.. Carter was excellent person and fresh.. and failed... Clinton 1 was interesting person and fresh.. and did well for the country... I like my thinking and the better person that I know will do better.. then just being fresh... who would know... after 4 years later, we can all say.. things went south... or we did the right thing... Obama freshness can send this country to south...
i mean seriously, how can one argue that deciding the election based on the florida and michigan delegates would be fair given that both candidates promised in advance not count the delegates and built their strategy around the presumption that they wouldn't count?  you would think that as democrats we would be sensitive to this sort of thing after bush vs gore 2000.
speaking about spin. can someone tell me what experience she has had for 35yrs? my wife was a teacher, but i have never ever pretended to be qualified to teach anything. where does she get off pretending to be experienced, unless being old is supposed to give someone an edge besides an aarp discount.
Eye Opener.... in Las Vegas has the appropriate perspective on this election. This country is at a cross-road and the only viable way out of the
multitude of problems created by two successive elections given to someone who had not the forsight,
experience or common sense to run a country by
the person we currently call our "president".
(You know him..... the DECIDER). Not only did it take
one term to recognize incompetence, many people had to vote him in office a second time before they came to their senses. Now we have a choice of two people,
one of which has been involved with the issues first hand (albeit, not as the general but in involved just the same), and had the country running like a top with a surplus budget for the first time in decades, and the other who has very little experience with most of the issues at hand. While he may be a NEW face and perhaps is a GOOD person, we need someone with experience not someone who is going to be learning on the job. We have just had 7 years of that and our country no longer has time for that.
Once more a moronic headline to suck you in.

Clinton "spin"?   Sorry I fail to see the "spin" that was advertised as such.

Funny how people formulate their opinion on someone based upon what they read or hear in the news and then go on to repeat it endlessly themselves.  More proof of the lack of independent thought that led to dubya being our 'destroyer-in-chief' these past several years.

90% of what is written about Hillary Clinton has a negative slant.   It's too bad you people can't see through that.
God, I'm so tired of hearing people beat up on Hillary... what is wrong with you people commenting and at msnbc?

I am a proud Hillary Campaign Donor and will likely donate more to shut you people up.

Obama is full of pomp and arrogance... he should be vice president for a while instead of being arrogant enough to think he can change things in Washington after only 3 years on the national scene

I have never in my 39 years seen such arrogance... and such vial comments from democrats about a brilliant woman.
Let obama win.
Let the republican spin machine trounce him, like they did Dukakis.
this is like Joe Lieberman running as independent and winning the democrat primary winner.
Checkmate - 4 years of republican rule!  Obama cannot fight dirty.  He has too much baggage. No one wants a pothead for president (at least in america). No one wants more affirmative action in america.  No one wants more welfare in america.  (these are some samples and will be tweaked MORE to have more emotional impact. Remember willie Horton).

Total Hillary 882, Obama 933

Then I would have to say Obama momentum would overwhelmingly win states going forward.

We would then rally around Barack Obama '08.
