More oh-eight (D): Hillary's $5 mil loan

Filed Under:

Apparently, the DNC is urging the two states whose delegates were wiped off the convention delegate map (Florida and Michigan) to hold new elections. Obviously, without a state sanctioned primary, this would mean the two state parties holding either caucuses or conventions to elect their delegates.

Caucuses, in general, have favored Obama but with so many delegates at stake, showdowns in these two states would become huge.

CLINTON: The cover of the New York Post: “No wonder she cried… HILL’S $5M LOAN.” “The moves were revealed as Clinton and Barack Obama hunkered down for a war of attrition for the Democratic nomination after Super Tuesday failed to crown a winner. And a series of contests in the coming weeks seem likely to favor the Illinois senator.”

The Clinton campaign points out it ‘had one of our best fundraising efforts ever on the web today,’ spokesman Howard Wolfson said.”

Per NBC’s Andrea Mitchell, “Sources say Clinton’s campaign manager Patti Solis Doyle spent too much in Iowa -- and ended up losing anyway. One big payout -- $4 million dollars to top strategist Mark Penn. Aides say after losing Iowa, Clinton found out about the money problems, which explains why she suddenly gave up her expensive private jet and started riding with the press. She tried to make a joke of it - at the time… But, for a candidate, there’s nothing funny about being short of cash just as the race is accelerating. Now she has to pick where to spend scarce resources.”

And as Mitchell also reported, some Clinton campaign staffers have voluntarily chosen to work without pay this month, as the campaign faces a cash crunch against Obama, who outraised her in January by a wide margin. Those working for free include Campaign Manager Patti Solis Doyle.

The Clinton campaign, meanwhile, sent around a dispatch from pro-Clinton blogger Taylor Marsh, who reports that the Clinton camp met its three-day goal of raising $3 million, and will issue a challenge of raising $6 million over the next 72 hours.

OBAMA: Per the Obama campaign Web site, as of last night at 6:25 pm, the campaign had raised $6.8 million since polls closed on Super Tuesday.

On the day that Hillary Clinton's campaign announced that the candidate had loaned herself $5 million in late January, the Obama campaign is using that fact to solicit even more funds from their own donors, NBC/NJ’s Aswini Anburajan reports.  "The Clinton campaign just announced that Hillary and Bill Clinton injected $5 million of their personal fortune into her campaign a few days ago. This is a dramatic move, and a clear acknowledgment that our campaign has the momentum," Obama manager David Plouffe writes in an email.

Plouffe goes on to ask that supporters donate to match the Clinton "infusion" of cash which he claims could go up to $20 million dollars and "will give them a huge resources for the next set of primaries and caucuses."

So why can't Obama close the deal when momentum is at his back? The New York Times’ Nagourney wonders about this today. “[O]ne of the most intriguing finding in the surveys of voters leaving the polls across the nation on Tuesday was when they arrived at their final decision. Throughout a week when Mr. Obama was campaigning with members of the Kennedy family, when there was a sense that he was creating a movement that cut across racial and generational lines, there was a steady movement of Democrats toward Mr. Obama, the survey suggested. But those who reported making their decision on the last day bucked the trend, tending to vote for Mrs. Clinton, of New York. Mr. Obama more than held his own against Mrs. Clinton: he won more states and may well have won more delegates, once all of them, including those from caucus states, are officially allocated.”

“But once again -- as in New Hampshire -- the result on Tuesday did not match the fervor that had been signaled by Mr. Obama’s dramatic march of rallies across the nation leading up to the vote. In that dynamic rests one of the central questions about the Obama candidacy, which may well go the heart of whether he can win the presidency. Is this campaign a series of surges of enthusiasm, often powered by the younger voters who form long lines waiting to hear Mr. Obama speak, that set expectations that are not met at the voting booth?”

“Or is it rather a slow-building force, one that despite faltering in New Hampshire and falling short on Tuesday in big states like California has allowed Mr. Obama to battle one of the most formidable political dynasties to a draw and will eventually propel him to victory?"

I agree with Teddy from Orlando.  Hill just go away.  Let us have Barack Obama and you take control of the majority in the senate.  Harry gets zero done there anyway.  That would be a perfect job for you, senate majority leader.   A women running the house, a women running the senate and Barack Obama in the White house.  Now that's change!!!
The accusation that Obama is the "establishment candidate" is absolutely laughable. She's been clamoring her 35 years of experience. Yeah right, 35 years ago, she just got out of Yale Law - do the math and look at her Bio. Also, The claimed experience as First Lady of Arkansas and subsequently the US DOESN'T COUNT! She has a former President in her camp. Hmmm, 35 years of experience, a former First Lady and a former President. Now then, who's the REAL "establishment candidate" Billary?

What's wrong Billary? People aren't donating to your campaign because they see you for what and who you really are? An opportunist that will say and do anything to get the nomination! Yeah, those tricks that you tried to pull and comments that you made have turned more people away from you and there's nothing that you can do about it! You divisive tactics are coming back to haunt you. Silly Billary, don’t you know that nothing escapes Karma? Not even YOU!

Oh yeah, BTW, your request to have a primary a week was turned down because Obama and Co. saw through your tactic of trying to get free air time! Good for them! All they have to do it keep up the work and they will have a break through that you won't be able to stop, regardless of how much cash you throw at it! What's wrong "princess?" Feel like crying? (he he he)

I think that Obama will take the nomination. It looks like Billary will run out of steam and Obama will be the last one standing. I wouldn't be surprised if she drops out of the race after the Chesapeake debate and primaries. Then again, who knows for sure? The real question is with the Super Delegates. Let’s see what happens in the next couple of weeks. This will be interesting… O-BA-MA!!! O-BA-MA!!! O-BA-MA!!!
"Apparently, the DNC is urging the two states whose delegates were wiped off the convention delegate map (Florida and Michigan) to hold new elections. "

FINALLY, now that is a solution to the two states that jumped the line.  How could anyone claim victory in states where the other candidates names weren't even on the ballot?  That sound like dirty tricks to me.  Oh wait, where have were heard that before?
WOW .. all of this Hillary bashing .. it finally convinced me to vote for her vs Obama. Also I'm fed up w/ hearing about "change". How about explaining exactly what change & how you paln on doing it ???
How does having no record entitle you to the presidental nomination ??  I'm also getting tired of his not too subtle palying of the 'race card".  I like to make up my mind based on the person and does what they are saying something I agree with. Don't give me I should or should NOT vote based on sex, race, age etc.  Talk to me like I'm an ittelligent human being and explain why you want my money and my vote.
So lets stop the name calling  - on BOTH sides, and get down to the nitty-gritty, why should you be president, what & how are you going to help the American People ??
I bought into one fast talker a year ago in Mass, when I voted for Deval Pattrick, I believed him on certain thing when he said it was opponets slinging mud - only now we find out it was not mud, but true!
So now I want facts, not talk.
Here is a petition to keep the DNC from once
again, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. The
pressure from the Clinton Campaign to award delegates
after the fact, from FL and MI is outrageous. The
candidates all agreed that they would not campaign in
those states and therefore, the delegates are off the
table. To claim a victory, when there were only 2 Dems
on the ballot in Michigan (Clinton and Kucinich), is
shameful. Any child on the school yard would recognize
this behavior as cheating. Pursuing this has already
opened Sen. Clinton to attacks from the right. If she is the nominee, you can imagine what Old Straight Talkin' John will do with that kind of ammo in the general election. All of those Obama Independents and Republicans will flock to "Honest"John McCain.
The pollsters keep telling me that as a white woman over 40 I should be "torn" between Obama and Clinton. I would love to see a woman win the White House, just not this woman. The pride I felt in her candidacy has been eclipsed by the way she's splitting the party with her unethical tactics. So sad.

NancyP -Boston, Ma (Sent Thursday, February 07, 2008 3:15 PM)

Ya Nancy and then we had Patrick going for Obama.  Did he really think we could be snooker by him twice.  He sweet talked and got in like that lying Romany.  They have done nothing they said , got nothing done.  Men are lying sacks of hot air.  Dval is a flop and barack is a carbon copy, do nothing men.
Obama's speech (October, 2002):

Good afternoon. Let me begin by saying that although this has been billed as an anti-war rally, I stand before you as someone who is not opposed to war in all circumstances.

The Civil War was one of the bloodiest in history, and yet it was only through the crucible of the sword, the sacrifice of multitudes, that we could begin to perfect this union, and drive the scourge of slavery from our soil. I don't oppose all wars.

My grandfather signed up for a war the day after Pearl Harbor was bombed, fought in Patton's army. He saw the dead and dying across the fields of Europe; he heard the stories of fellow troops who first entered Auschwitz and Treblinka. He fought in the name of a larger freedom, part of that arsenal of democracy that triumphed over evil, and he did not fight in vain.

   I don't oppose all wars.

After September 11th, after witnessing the carnage and destruction, the dust and the tears, I supported this Administration's pledge to hunt down and root out those who would slaughter innocents in the name of intolerance, and I would willingly take up arms myself to prevent such a tragedy from happening again.

I don't oppose all wars. And I know that in this crowd today, there is no shortage of patriots, or of patriotism. What I am opposed to is a dumb war. What I am opposed to is a rash war. What I am opposed to is the cynical attempt by Richard Perle and Paul Wolfowitz and other arm-chair, weekend warriors in this Administration to shove their own ideological agendas down our throats, irrespective of the costs in lives lost and in hardships borne.

What I am opposed to is the attempt by political hacks like Karl Rove to distract us from a rise in the uninsured, a rise in the poverty rate, a drop in the median income - to distract us from corporate scandals and a stock market that has just gone through the worst month since the Great Depression.

That's what I'm opposed to. A dumb war. A rash war. A war based not on reason but on passion, not on principle but on politics.

Now let me be clear - I suffer no illusions about Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal man. A ruthless man. A man who butchers his own people to secure his own power. He has repeatedly defied UN resolutions, thwarted UN inspection teams, developed chemical and biological weapons, and coveted nuclear capacity.

He's a bad guy. The world, and the Iraqi people, would be better off without him.

But I also know that Saddam poses no imminent and direct threat to the United States, or to his neighbors, that the Iraqi economy is in shambles, that the Iraqi military a fraction of its former strength, and that in concert with the international community he can be contained until, in the way of all petty dictators, he falls away into the dustbin of history.

I know that even a successful war against Iraq will require a US occupation of undetermined length, at undetermined cost, with undetermined consequences. I know that an invasion of Iraq without a clear rationale and without strong international support will only fan the flames of the Middle East, and encourage the worst, rather than best, impulses of the Arab world, and strengthen the recruitment arm of al-Qaeda.

I am not opposed to all wars. I'm opposed to dumb wars.

So for those of us who seek a more just and secure world for our children, let us send a clear message to the president today. You want a fight, President Bush? Let's finish the fight with Bin Laden and al-Qaeda, through effective, coordinated intelligence, and a shutting down of the financial networks that support terrorism, and a homeland security program that involves more than color-coded warnings.

You want a fight, President Bush? Let's fight to make sure that the UN inspectors can do their work, and that we vigorously enforce a non-proliferation treaty, and that former enemies and current allies like Russia safeguard and ultimately eliminate their stores of nuclear material, and that nations like Pakistan and India never use the terrible weapons already in their possession, and that the arms merchants in our own country stop feeding the countless wars that rage across the globe.

You want a fight, President Bush? Let's fight to make sure our so-called allies in the Middle East, the Saudis and the Egyptians, stop oppressing their own people, and suppressing dissent, and tolerating corruption and inequality, and mismanaging their economies so that their youth grow up without education, without prospects, without hope, the ready recruits of terrorist cells.

You want a fight, President Bush? Let's fight to wean ourselves off Middle East oil, through an energy policy that doesn't simply serve the interests of Exxon and Mobil.

Those are the battles that we need to fight. Those are the battles that we willingly join. The battles against ignorance and intolerance. Corruption and greed. Poverty and despair.

The consequences of war are dire, the sacrifices immeasurable. We may have occasion in our lifetime to once again rise up in defense of our freedom, and pay the wages of war. But we ought not - we will not - travel down that hellish path blindly. Nor should we allow those who would march off and pay the ultimate sacrifice, who would prove the full measure of devotion with their blood, to make such an awful sacrifice in vain.

Lets turn the page,

VOTE OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT!
I can't believe all of the people who claim to want to be talked to like an "intellegent human being" (NancyP). But before anyone who blogs here answers you, have you even watched every single debate these 2 have been in. I would think the only way you have not figured out what each candidate stands for is bacause someone hasn't smacked it your face for you. It is clear where there differences are and beleive me they are not that vast.

Healthcare: Ideally we would all like to feed all of the starving children in the world, but although we have made great progress it is simply NOT REALISTIC, for example her "Universal Healthcare Plan". Anytime this women has proposed  a healthcare idea it doesn't work, it fails.

Iraq: If you thin kthis women is going to get the troops out, you are mistaken. Both candidates actually understand that some type of presence there is required to protect our emabassy (or oil) which ever floats your boat. The point is that the presence will not be combat troops.

I could go on and on, but I will say this it is not the countries nor the canididates responsibility to continue to forcefeed information into you. If you care and you want your vote to make a difference then go to the candidates website and read isssue for issue, position for position on each one.

Your vote | Your Responsibility

I personally am voting for Obama as is my mother and my brother 25, 20, and 50 as is my husband 28. We are the middle class but we are young, educated, with careers yet we feel the pinch every time I cut a check to the bank for my mortgage or how I pay $5,867 dollars in taxes for a condo that is 860 square feet. Personally I undertsand everyone is sensitive about comments here, I will be the first to say I have not been as calm before. However, as a woman it saddens me that any other woman would try to convince to vote for Hillary because I wear a bra and because that will make an equal playing field in the workplace as far as salaries and positions. I met my husband in a bank (we are both bankers) he is VP of Business Banking and my position at 22 was exactly where he was at 26. This is a fair example of what I preach to my brother, regardless of gender, your education, your responsibility to own it, is what creates a fair playing field. Women supporting Hillary with that type of preaching, I am ashamed now that I wasn't born male if this is how we are trying to inspire our daughters or raise them to ride on the gender coattails as excuses for why we did not suceed as greatkly as man in any aspect of our lives.

Your life | Your responsibility | Your Failure or Your Success
Also Remember everyone who follows Politics says a good way to judge a President is to see how their campaign is run...look at the Romney and Guliani models.....I would say The Clinton Camp is in trouble at this point (if releasing the $5.million story was not a manipulation tool - which I am still not convinced it was not.....)
