Virginia: Huckabee's post-Romney test

Posted: Thursday, February 07, 2008 12:56 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Chuck Todd
The first test of a Mike Huckabee in the post-Mitt Romney world as a conservative alternative to John McCain comes in Virginia. It's a fascinating test, frankly; Virginia's Republican electorate could be much more conservative than folks realize.

Why? The presence of Barack Obama, who has been a magnet for independent voters. Virginia doesn't have party registration; many a moderate indie or even a very moderate Republican from Northern Virginia could decide to vote in the Democratic primary race. Virginia has a decent sized evangelical population and no doubt Huckabee has tapped into those folks already.

Sure, there's a sizable veterans population that McCain could do well with, but keep an eye on Tuesday's Virginia primary; it's Huckabee's last chance to prove he can beat McCain somewhere.

Sure, it's a Southern state, but it's one that allows indies to crossover and would be a blemish on McCain if he lost. Frankly, it's probably Huckabee's last stand to prove viability as a serious alternative. If he can't win under what may be ideal circumstances for his campaign; then next week may bring another exit from the race.

Too bad Romney didn't leave after NH.  He stole so many Huckabee votes.
Huckabee's last stand was Iowa, if he cared about america and not his personal agenda to aid McCain and be VP, he would have dropped out after South Carolina and we would have a conservative and true republican as our nominee.  Now we have to hope that as we rally around McCain that he doesn't forget what party he represents over the next four years.  I will still vote republican, because a horrible republican is better than the best democrat for the country.  In a way I want the democrats to win, so that as the country gets so thoroughly messed up over the next 4 years that they have to take the blame for it.
Funny there's mention of the only Republican who not only never voted to raise taxes, never voted for an unbalanced budget. There's still a candidate, who raises the most money from the military, Republican voters can support.  Ron Paul has lots of cash on hand and will be in it till the convention.

Nominating McCain is like giving George Bush a third term. Come on, America. It's time to unite behind Huckabee.
Woohoo!!!!! take that radio talk show hosts and liberal media that has TRIED to shut Governor  Huckabee down- He took his case straight to the people and BEAT the Romney money machine...ina a state he wasn't even predicted to do well in...Maybe Romney should drop out of the race and stop taking votes from Huckabee!!!!!!    18 delegates for the real Governor...Congratualtions Governor Huckabee-YOU DESERVE IT!!!!

“I want to make real sure that he (Romney) understands something. This old Arkansas boy is not for sale. He doesn’t have enough money to buy me. I’m not some troubled company that he can buy, sell off the assets and send us home. There’s a whole lot of people like me in this country who are tired of people waving their checkbooks at us and making us think they own us and they can buy us. Well you can’t buy us. You can’t even rent us. We’re not for sale. We’re going to the polls Tuesday and we’re going to show America this country is about ordinary people who believe in the extraordinary power of the American dream and we’re going to prove it at the ballot box Tuesday.” - Governor Mike Huckabee on Monday Feb 4th

It's NOT THE PUNDITS, the pollsters, the Radio hosts, or establishment POLITICIANS, it's the PEOPLE WHO DECIDE!  Way to shut their FAT mouths Governor Huckabee!!!!

I predict Huckabee will be in play in Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, Mississipi, Texas, Louisiana, Kansas, Nebraska, & Ohio & even Wisconsin....but go ahead and continue to underestimate him and you will get shocked once again!“I want to make real sure that he (Romney) understands something. aren't those delgates of Romney's up for grabs now? Huck could get a fair number of those if he lasts till the convention. I hope he stays in keep things interesting with McCain so Newt will come in and save the GOP at the convention.

Gingrich '08
I am sick of Huckabee....Is he a paid staff memember of Morning Joe....I am so sick of seeing his FACE....You talk about someone who needs to go away....Huckabee is one of them....And I am not a Romney or McCain Supportter
hi
DCortez,

What do you think Huckleberry has been doing all along?
The Huckster needn't worry---I'm sure God will reach down and personally endorse him. Or rig the votes.  Or something.
Game over!!!  Bob Dole won again, and Bob Dole will lose again in November.  Only problem is by then half of Mexico will be voting in the U.S. Presidential election in 2012 and no real conservative will ever win or be nominated again.  The conservative party as we know it just died with Romney.
Huck will lose... simply because he won't take the northern third of the state - most densely populated and most liberal. McCain will do well there with the moderates. Huck will probably do all right in the backward part of the state - extreme SW VA - where dancing is still banned and snake handlers still preach... but that's all he'll get.
Why is Virginia the "first test"?  What about Louisiana, Washington, and Kansas?
Huckabee was the best choice for the Republicans. Being from the Deep South, I have always had family ties to the Republican Party and I can say that I am an Eisenhower Republican. But the neo-con movement of the last 45 years has brought the party down and their use and control of the media by Clear Channel among others is actually hurting more than it's helping their cause these days. Just look at how people are inculcated with the feelings that they should bend over backwards to have the 'conservative' moniker, lest they be ostracized as a hated “liberal”, “socialist” or some other designation in a child-like and ridiculously extreme ‘all or nothing’ scale of acceptance and rejection of fellow human beings. The Republican Party of the people and its members, not its radio talking heads, should really define itself again in the 21st century and discover the kind of compassionate and pragmatic conservatism that needs to manifest itself in actual policy to keep it from collapsing. “Conservative” needs to start being literal for the Republican Party again in both foreign and domestic policy. Borrowing money from foreign enemies, not balancing the budget, going to war so a few in power can make profit, huge tax cuts and subsidies for the super-wealthy when the economy and the dollar are bleeding, these are policies of the neo-con "conservatives". But these policies are not conservative by any sense of the literal word, they are in fact RADICAL. The word “conservative” by Rush Limbaugh's standard is more like a cult member nickname than anything else these days. So to all who fall over themselves to have the conservative nickname yet do nothing to be truly conservative in their mindset or behavior, who are complicit in the Republican Party's downfall, I say count me out. Just listening to John McCain and the other Republican candidates tout their perspectives on the world I think one of two things are true, either they are really stupid or the bar is still very, very low in just how much sense you have to make to the typical Republican voter as a candidate to get their vote. Either way, the rest of the country, more and more people every day, are just not buying that Disney movie "We good guys, they bad guys" black and white viewpoint of our country and our world anymore. If John McCain or Mitt Romney are the best the Republican Party can do, then the party deserves to lose and lose big in the general election this year.
Let me just say that NO ONE named Huckleberry will ever be POTUS, Not to mention that he wants to rewrite the bill of rights modeled after the bible. Give it a rest evangelicals, it is not going to happen. Your efforts would be put to better use by supporting anyone who has a broader appeal to voters from coast to coast.
Too bad Huckabee didn't leave before Florida. He stole so many Romney votes.
He has, however, already cemented serious consideration for the #2.

Huckabee is a very scary guy.  On TV, he's personable, self-effacing, and funny.  He can even take on Stephen Colbert.  But when he's talking to evangelical groups, the affable face comes off and the theocratic gargoyle that lurks behind it is in full view.
Right, "stole".  Except that Romney won far more votes and delegates and states than Huckabee.  Too bad Huckabee didn't drop out.  Romney could have beat McCain if Huckabee wasn't in it solely for the purpose of thwarting Romney... We'll see how well your guy does now that McCain won't be helping him out (like in WV). We'll also see how many people flee the GOP in order to vote for someone with integrity (go Obama!!)
Mike Huckabee is a religious fanatic. How many delegates can a guy who said, "I believe it's a lot easier to change the constitution than it would be to change the word of the living God" get? His interpretation of the "word of the living God", leaves too many people out in the cold. The only reason he even stayed in the race was to ruin Romney's chances of a nomination. Now that Romney has left, and mark my words, Huckubee will leave in the next week, just long enough to make it not so obvious why he even stayed in. Mike Huckabee is a spoiler and a hater. Not exactly the virtues of the one he professes to follow.
it will be a McCanin, Huckabee ticket.  Get ready for the dems i the white house.
Too bad Huckabee didn't leave after NH.  He stole so many Romney votes.
clintons unsavory connections will come into play now, her and bill's experience in arm twisting and corrupt political shenanigans is unmatched, they will do what ever it takes regardless of legality or what's right to further their dynasty, their lust for wealth and power always trumps fair play, couple this with the fact that the republicans are salivating for a hillary nomination, because they know they can beat her in the general, and you have a situation that is sure to become very ugly and dishonest, with the american citizens wishes tossed to the curb
Huckabee has ZERO, that's Z-E-R-O chance in getting the republican nomination....thank God because we dont' need a christian fundamentalist from the christian reconstructionist movement in the white house.

Lee Holmes from yesterday [[Garbage. ''common dreams''is a leftwinged website which typically shills for George Soros. Expect no veritas from the likes of these. ]]

It is a fact that John McCain's life was saved by a Vietnamese civilian named Mai Van On. It is a fact that McCain broke under torture and made false "confessions" to his North Vietnamese interrogators. There is absolutely nothing dishonorable about any of that except the fact that McCain lets his campaign operatives and the news media avoid acknowledging these facts. That is a lie of omission, and it _is_ dishonorable.

Lee Holmes complains  that these facts aren't facts because they were published by Common Dreams, a progressive web site that was run by "aging Marxists."  Ignoring for the moment that it is a McCarthyite lie to call Common Dreams a Marxist web site,  Common Dreams didn't even have anything to do with the article other than reprinting it. It was written by Ted Rall, a syndicated editorial cartoonist and author, who has absolutely nothing to do with Common Dreams.

Here's the link to Rall's original article:

http://www.uexpress.com/tedrall/

Here's a link to an article on Mr. Van On saving McCain from 1997  so this is clearly not some "swift boat" attack on McCain:
http://archive.southcoasttoday.com/daily/05-97/05-10-97/a12wn060.htm

Or maybe Holmes thinks the evil Hillary Clinton planted this story way back in 1997 to use it against him in 2008. Those Clintons, they'll do anything!

Only lying liars of the whacko rightwing  believe that facts ought to be ignored just because they don't like them and they're printed on a "liberal" web site. As Steven Colbert has observed, facts have a liberal bias.
to all huckabee fans, don't think Romney stole my vote from you, he didn't!  I won't vote for huckabee unless its him verses clinton and then it'd be a tough one to swallow.  I'm now firmly nestled in the Obama camp.  Romney inspired me and hucks selfish quest for attention is only going to hurt the election process.  My best wishes to Mr. and Mrs. Romney, i'll gladly support you in any future bid!
If Romney was ever serious about being a conservative candidate, he owes it to his constituents to cede his delegates to Huckabee.
Now the Pundits can eat their shoes. All along they cried HUCK is spoiling Phoney Romney's chances. In the last debate they did not give Huck any respect.
Look now. IT IS A TWO MAN RACE. HUCK IS IN IT.

Money cannot buy the election. Phoneys are never elected. People are smarter than the Bought out experts.

Talk is cheap, We need substance. People who are greedy for money and power usually are good speakers, like Reagan, who managed to fool the entire nation into believing that he had done a lot, while he was the laziest president ever. Reagan and his wife had literately turned the WH into a circus Hollywood style, with them being the clown and actors for 8 years. Many woman, children, and minority people are still suffering financially today because of Reagan.

We just can't trust a rookie (If not worst) with the most important job in the free world just because he is a great SPEAKER.

Too bad Huckabee didn't leave before Iowa.  Then we'd have a conservative nominee: Romney
If the Republicans want to be sure to take the Presidency this election, they should recruit Condoleezza Rice to run as VP. I think we'd find the U.S. has no problem with "a" black person or "a" woman running.  Just give us a real choice. Something other than Billary or Obama.
Thanks to Domenico Montanaro for the most intelligent comment on this development that I've seen in the hour or so since it became known that Romney withdrew.

If Huckabee gets VP nomination I'll vote for a democratic president for the first time in my life.  Neo-conservatism scares me more than the things that scare me about the two democratic candidates.

Personally, I'd LOVE to see a McCain-Powell ticket.  Colin Powell is one of the political victims of the Bush administration and he deserves an opportunity to serve his country with respect.
I used to think I was a Democrat, I was wrong.

Ron Paul will make me a Republican.  If the Republican party actually cared about being conservative (smaller government, lower taxes, less wasteful spending like Iraq for example - if we stay there it WILL destroy our military, our economy and our country!) they would throw their support behind  Ron Paul.  Ron Paul is a true conservative Republican.  Ron Paul has taught me that I like Republican ideals (as they should be, not as they are now.)

If Ron Paul got the GOP nomination, he would MOP THE FLOOR with ANY Democrat, period.  He believes in the constitution, and so do we!
RON PAUL Revolution!  www.ronpaul2008.com
Jerry CHui is right about Reagan and Obama, another beginner who speaks well (sometimes). The White House is too important for people who lack epxerience and savvy. Obama has neither. He has no substance and his campaign is mainly a personality cult.
What everybody is failing to see is that Romney all though he claims to be a conservative was champion of the liberal state health care plan in Massachusetts, which by the way this year alone is already 400 million dollars over budget and is expected to increase. So what Huckabee is a christain. So what he said he would try and change the constitution, do you really think he could? And if you have a problem with the values by which the constitution was found (read bible here) then you have a basic problem with this country, not with the man. Huckabee is the only one who wants to change Washington from the inside out with the Fair Tax. If you haven't heard of that maybe you should read the legislation that is in front of congress and find out for yourself.
Condoleeza Rice would not be a good draw for Republicans as a VP.  Not many blacks will vote for her.  By the way, why is everyone blaming Huckabee for staying in the race.  The guy won several states because the people wanted to vote for him.  I find it amazing that people suggest he drop out so Romney would pick up votes.  If the Huckabee people really wanted to vote for Romney then they wou;d vote for him.  It amazes me that we don't feel it makes sense to allow voters in other states to have a say on the available candidates based upon who we feel should be a more representative of our individual values rather than who can better represent a conservative base.

A MAN'S WORTH IS PROVED ONLY WHEN HE IS FACING THE CHALLENGES. HUCK PROVED HE IS A MAN OF CALIBER.

Entire Money Machine, Bought out Media, Pseudo-Conservatives have written him off even before the real battle began. In the last debate they were not even allowing him to talk. NOW THEY HAVE LEARNT, IT IS THE PEOPLE WHO DECIDE THE WINNER, NOT THE MONEY, NOT THE LOBBYISTS, NOT THE PUNDITS.

HUCK IS STILL STANDING ON HIS FEET. HE STOOD STRONG WHEN THE CHIPS ARE DOWN, HE FOUGHT AGAISNT ALL THE ODDS TO PROVE HIS WORTH.

=====================================================

Please....many of New Jersey's politicians are as filthy and corrupt as the day is long, and its been that way for decades. New Jersey is a putrid, stench-ridden cesspool...an industrial vomitorium and a toilet that stinks to high heavens.

Heh, Good Luck taking Virginia, Upchuckabee.  John Warner has endorsed McCain, and we Northern Virginians find your brand of polisticking repugnant.  Go back to the Ozarks and leave us alone!
i as a romney backer will be outraged if any of his delegates go to the huckabee camp!  Huckabee shares a spot with clinton at the bottom of my consideration list.
Is Huckabee to get out of the race because he's an evangelical? Is that it? Can you name something he favors you can't live with?  What would you do in his shoes? You'd scramble to get the attention of Romney's delegates and then try to win Kansas,Virginia, Ohio, Louisiana, and Texas- in short, you'd try to get the nomination, wouldn't you? How can you suggest McCain has to be the nominee now? If he wins, fine, I'll support him in November. I'll stop there before I get started on the Senators and former Senators at CPAC who don't want someone who's not one of there own to get the nomination. Let's not let CPAC alone decide who gets the nomination. Now McCain is trying to write Huckabee's obituary. Not so fast, my friend.
Bye-bye, Flip Flopper Mitt Romney. We hardly knew you -- or your sorry attempts to buy the Presidency!!

http://osi-speaks.blogspot.com/2008/02/breaking-news-mitt-romney-will-bow-out.html#links
Quark I'd vote for that. She's never fallen back on the girl card or race card either. Something Bull Clinton and wife have tried and failed to make Obama do. I'd love to see Condi rip the head off any democrat in a debate.
SHAWN HANNITY, BILL OREILLY, AND FOX NEWS CAN STICK IT, THEY KILLED HIM RIGHT BEFORE S CAROLINA FOR GULLANI.  HE WOULD BE WAY AHEAD OF HIM, THEY KNEW HE HAD NO MONEY, SO THEY INVITE HIM ON TO KILL HIM, IM THROUGH WITH FOX   HANG IN THERE HUCK
Go Huckabee!!! He's a real conservative and yes he has a long way to go, but he's the underdog when the media hasn't given him much love!

Also, Chuck, what's up with your penmanship? lol, I watched you write the delegates on the screen and thought..man that guy has chicken-scratch!

Also, give my love to Joe and Mica!
Cory from Tampa, You listen to the media to much. Romney should have dropped out after NH. Thompson should never have been in the race, then we would be looking at a true conservative and someone that actually cares about the average American
GsonJagnath wrote: NOW THEY HAVE LEARNT, IT IS THE PEOPLE WHO DECIDE THE WINNER.

Spoken by a true Huckabee supporter. (GsonJagnath probably won't even understand what I am talking about.)

The Romneyites and liberals can't make an argument without insulting the electorate and making excuses for Romney's losses:

They just hate Mormons
They just don't understand the issues
They are backwoods
They aren't really trying to win
They are moderates
They are independents
They are just from the south
