Obama speaks on New Orleans recovery

Posted: Thursday, February 07, 2008 1:00 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan
NEW ORLEANS -- With an absence of pomp and circumstance, plus a lack of campaign literature, large HOPE signs, and music that usually swells as if it would introduce a rock star, Obama took the stage at Tulane with a sober introduction and sobering message on the state of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

The policies that Obama introduced were not new; he had introduced a Katrina recovery plan on the second anniversary of the storm earlier this year. But he revisited them and his focus on educational policy just two days before Louisiana will hold a presidential primary.

Certain aspects of Obama’s program stood out, designed to curry favor with local residents to help New Orleanians reap economic benefits. For example, jobs and contracts awarded for reconstruction should go to a resident of the city first.

“The policies of my administration don’t end in places like the Ninth Ward. They begin in places like the Ninth Ward,” Obama told the crowd, speaking of the devastated area of the city that came to symbolize the depth of poverty not only in New Orleans but in the country.

Calling New Orleans a “tale of two cities,” Obama urged the students at Tulane University, where he was speaking, to stay in their community after graduation to rebuild New Orleans. He also emphasized his education policies, positioning them as a necessary fulcrum to help residents here lift themselves out of poverty.

Obama saved most of his criticisms for Bush, but he seemed to have Clinton in his sights when he said, "You challenge the status quo and suddenly the claws come out."

The crowd was rowdy by the time Obama finished, cheering loudly and turning their cheer for The Saints into one for Obama.

“Who’d that? Who’d that? Who’d them say they gonna beat Obama?” the students chanted as the filed out. The campaign estimated that 3,5000 people were present to hear Obama’s speech, with an overflow crowd of 1,500 people. After the speech Obama, spoke to the overflow and went to tour a local school where students are still learning in modular trailers. After Louisiana, Obama head to Lincoln, NE.

After the speech he spoke.......  He's always talking to people but notice, nNEVER taking questions like Hillary does all the time now.  If Obama's so great, why is he afraid to debate Hillary?  She's has two disasterous debates but is still willing to put up. He should too, or shut up.   All Obama's done is hold star-studded rallies where he doesn't even take questions.  And 3/4 of the states he's won weren't even primaries, but caucuses which are not at all representative of the population and totally undemocratic.  How many of us have several hours to travel miles from home to be pressured in front of others to vote for a particular person instead of making up our minds in private as the founders intended?
Its good to see everyone remember that the Obama campaign has been addressing post-Katrina recovery for some time.  He is the candidate that is ready to carry on the good work Senator Edwards did on this issue.
HE TOOK HIS RECOVERY PLAN, FROM SENATOR CLINTON'S PLAN. NOW WHY DOES SENATOR OBAMA REFUSE TO DEBATE SEANTOR CLINTON ?
All talk, no substance.
Obama refuses to have any further debates, ask yourself why ?
Obama can blame President Bush all he wants....

But it was the democratic party in Louisiana and New Orleans that failed to protect the people before, during and after katrina.

Republicans are starting to remove the democrats, starting at the top....

It will end with Ray Nagin being tossed out on his rear end...
Hear that, Obama-haters?  You say he's nothing but rhetoric, well here he is talking on policy... policy he announced and first spoke about MONTHS ago.

Knowledge is power!
To all of the uninformed people above, there has been 19 debates and Obama has particpated in all of them. But then again why let the facts get in the way of the outcome you have already established.
What's the matter, $150 billion not enough? Hint: Next time build ABOVE sea level.
DON'T DEBATE HILLARY !!

She just wants FREE TV TIME
She can't afford to keep uo with Obama's ads

USE YOUR MONEY ADVANTAGE !!

PLEASE ! PLEASE !!

Start talking about pocket book issues

Social Security, Middle Class tax cuts, Health Insurance coverage

THAT'S what will take women, Latinos and union members away from the Clintons

START ADDRESSING POCKET BOOK ISSUES !!

Use your contributions to pivot the campaign to these issues......

THAT'S WHY HILLARY HAS WOMEN
SHE'S TALKING THEIR ISSUES

Start tolking about them too !!

Obama '08
the darkness is lifting
This is what I believe we will get from a President Obama ... a man who embraces the individual problems of the nation ... this man won't wait weeks to show up at the devastation of a horrific event that tramatises thousands of our citizens ... this is a man who will look for practical ways to overcome and proceed forward ... this is a man I will vote for to be the next President of the United States.
Oh wow Obama brought a SIGN, says HOPE!  The poor have very little reason to hope in N O! Hey what no sign of change? Obama will gas 'em all with his talk, talk, talk and no substance. I am sure the people of a lesser God have no time or energy to listen to hopes and dreams of an egotistical politician.

'... If Obama's so great, why is he afraid to debate Hillary? ...'

That's an EASY ONE !!

He DOSEN'T WANT to give Hillary FREE TV TIME !!

Hillary is RUNNING OUT OF MONEY !!
TOO BAD !!

Now, Obama has a money advantage
He'll USE IT

SORRY !!  NO DEBATES !!!

Debates ?  NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!
Paul asked about future debates:  Barack Obama won’t show up for debates?  Are we surprised?  Obama consistently went AWOL on votes in the Illinois Legislature.  He went AWOL on at least one crucial vote in the US Senate (regarding Iran), which he said was “a mistake.”  He said he missed the vote because he was “out campaigning” (note that Clinton, Biden, and Dodd all showed up for the vote).  He now plans to go AWOL on the debates.  Obama appears to be more interested in running for president than in doing the hard work necessary to do his job.  They say there are two types of politicians:  work horses and show horses.  Clearly Obama is the latter.  The debates are designed to help voters understand the details of a candidate’s positions.  Is Obama afraid to be questioned too closely about his ideas for fear that those questions may expose his campaign as having a grand message with very little substance?
Raising Kaine is now officially endorsing Barack Obama for President and encourages all Virginians to vote for him in the Commonwealth's presidential primary this Tuesday, February 12, 2008. This endorsement is based on the unanimous support among the Raising Kaine editors as well as overwhelming support from our community.

jerry/corpus christi texas: let's be truthful here. The mayor of New Orleans dropped the ball in the days leading up to the hurricane, by not evacuating people by bus. I can't for the life of me understand why he was voted back into office.

Also, I believe New Orleans would have survived the hurricane am I right? Wasn't it the levees that destroyed the city?

President Bush showed no leadership to speak of. How can we have a president who has to be shown a CD of the devastation which the whole world was aware of?
Interesting spin, most interesting. Senator Obama took questions all summer and fall.  This was at a time when Senator Clinton hardly took any questions.  Many of those townhalls are probably still on c-span.  If you want to hear questions answered in great detail by Senator Obama, check out c-span.org.

If you take the time, you will find Senator Obama is brilliant, transformative and substantive.  You will also discover that Senator Obama is the only candidate running who has a vision for the future of America.  It is a beautiful vision and I sincerely hope it happens.  Obama '08.  Yes we can.

Asking for debates is a classic tactic because it's a no lose proposition for the person doing the asking (and often asked for by the person that is LOSING).  The campaigns both privately admit that Hillary is in for a rough ride in February.  What does she have to lose asking for debates when she's not even bothering to campaign in these areas and is sending her surrogates in instead?  Obama has never said that he will NOT debate her, he has said he will NOT debate her right now because he has other things to take care of, like talking to people that Hillary has no interest in visiting.

It's "Who dat" not "Who’d that?"
Whats with all these Clintonistas? Easy !!!

Hillary Lacks the Money/ funds to continue her campaign and she is trying to use debates as a media outreach.

She wants to use so many unwarranted debates to slow Obama down, what a pity!!! anything to win.

Obama will debate her but not every week.

Moreover they've had 17 debates already, we know where they stand.

The people are giving him the money because they believe in his message and want to here more

We have approximately 3 primaries every week, he needs campaigning time

So all you Clintonistas should back off!!!!!!!!!!
Perhaps Obama is reluctant to have so many more debates because we've already had 18 of 'em, and besides, why give her the free publicity...let her write another check $5 million!
Re:Paul,
Why doesn't Obama want more debates? Because that's valuable time he could be spending getting his name out in more states - you see there's a trend, when people get to hear Obama's message, they vote for him. So why, waste your time debating Clinton and dealing with her spin on how her vote for the Iraq war was not for military action, when you can be winning primaries and caucuses? You can combat the Clinton machine's spin head on by interacting with the actual people who vote... if it ain't broke, don't fix it! Obama should win a clean sweep of primaries and caucuses in Feb leaving him the only viable candidate for Novemeber... certainly without those 48% general public disapproval rankings and 87% republican disapproval rankings.

No need, he is winning. The more people that come to see him, the more they like him, he is better off spending his time on the trail!!!

Paul Gunter, Columbus, Ohio (Sent Thursday, February 07, 2008 1:11 PM)

Because there have already been 452 democratic debates in the last 6 months. The few differences between the two candidates are very distinct and well know and the only advantage to having a debate every week is to try to create "a moment" that you can then use to beat your opponent over the head with. Create "a moment" so you can distract the voters from the issues. The Clintons need to find something to slow Obama's movement.

When the race is clean and issue driven, Obama shines. When it's down and dirty, the Clintons are at there best. And if there isn't anything to get dirty with, then ya gotta make something.

It has nothing to do with being scared, it has to do with speaking to voters on the campaign trail face to face in order to make your case. It's good politics for Obama and the best direction for his campaign.
Sigh, so the "debates" thing is the new mantra for the Clintonites today it seems.  So sad.  We've already had 2 Bushs and a Clinton, we dont need another one of either.
NO DEBATES !!

NO WAY !!

Make Hillary PAY fopr her TV Time !!

Obama '08
The darkness is lifting
If Obama is the "perceived" frontrunner for now, especially with the string of states coming up that favor his campaign, then he's only following the pattern HRC used during her NY Senate campaigns where she, as the frontrunner, refused to debate with her opponents.  The philosophy is simple... catch me if you can.

Wow - another speech about Senator Obama's POLICIES! More SUBSTANCE from our future Predident!

P.S. Why all the whining about debates? Does Senator Clinton have something new to say? I didn't think so . . .
Inspirational rhetoric and unifying ideas will bring us together behind Obama.

An additional debate on the GOP-run Fox News would lead to an erosion in Democratic momentum. Hillary is using this debate issue to propel herself at the expense of her party.
Why did Clinton wait until she was broke and losing to badger him for debates?  I don't recall her looking for more debates when she was the heavy favorite...I find her requests slightly disingenuous.  His campaign should accept debates because they fit within his schedule, not because they are trying to bully him into it.
Obama refuses to debate Clinton because he doesn't want to give her the free t.v. time that she so desperately needs due to her poor campaign planning.

Of course her campaign and supporters are spinning this into Obama being "afraid to debate." That is absolutely not the case...Clinton is afraid that Obama will continue to draw tens of thousands of people to his rallies and continue to raise millions of dollars per day.

There have been 18 democratic debates. We don't need 22. Obama has said that he will probably do 1 with her, he needs to work for votes just like she does...out on the campaign trail. Not rehashing the same stuff and making mountains out of molehills.

Obama '08...YES WE CAN!
Obama has debated Clinton 18 times. If they did, it would be the same show as last time. What more needs to be debated?
Sen. Obama has agreed to more debates, just not one every week. I mean they have had 18 already. If people don't know where they stand its because the Clinton's have a new campaign theme and message every other week.  When pollsters (Mark Penn) run your campaign its hard to stay consistent.
The debates Hillary wants to have are not so the people can see the candidates in action, it's because she can't afford to get exposure through paid channels so she's wants to up the free ones.
<<Obama refuses to have any further debates, ask yourself why ?>>

What's left to debate? It's not like everyone doesn't know Obama's and Clinton's positions on the issues. If Hillary wants airtime, she's going to have to be a paying customer from here on out.
First, I think that it is important that the campaigns are continuing to focus attention on New Orleans - John Edwards started this, and it is great to see that it is continuing.

Second, I see Hillary's spin on the debate issue has taken hold. There have been more debates this cycle than ever before - if people don't know the candidates' policy positions by now, another 6 debates aren't going to help. This isn't about the issues and it's not about Obama's "being afraid" to debate Hillary - it's about Hillary's campaign funds...Debates = free air time. Look at it honestly, they all refused to debate at Fox earlier this year and now she is clamoring for it...
Be careful what you wish for. Check Obama's records. He is more liberal than Hillary. He is a socialist at the best. The change he will bring is HIGHER TAX for middle class families
BUT obama did agree to one more debate. Just not the once a week Hilary wants. After 18 debates that would just get annoying.
WQhy no further debates?  Because Hillary just wants free media due to her bleeding money and wants to take him off the campaign trail where he can talk to actual voters.  There's been 18 debates thusfar, and contrary to what you keep saying Obama and she stand as equals on that stage.  Maybe she's hoping for another Lazio moment, but it ain't happening.  Calling for an infinite number of debates is just a sign of desperation.  They,ve had debates, now they need to make their case.

Get over it Clinton folks, vote with your wallets if you really care about it.
Jerry, Jerry Jerry - The whole country watched what happened during Katrina, why are you trying to rewrite history. It was the federal governments lack of response that led to the disaster we all witnessed live on tv at the superdome. Only after the rest of the country got sickened by the sights did your shrub make a feeble attempt at doing something. Did you forget "heck of a job brownie". Nagin may or may not survive, but please don't blame what happened on the dems, the city and state were overwhelmed by the magnitude of the storm, and thats when the federal government is supposed to step in and help. I think what you are saying is exactly the other way around, the repukes are the ones going to be thrown out of office this fall, only time will tell.
I love how Clinton supporters are now hanging their hats on the argument that Obama is a coward for not wanting to debate Senator Clinton once a week. The only reason Hillary supports this idea if because it's a chance to grab some free media that she desperately needs and that she doesn't have to write another check out of her bank account for.

Why should Obama take time away from his campaign to accomodate the needs of his opponent who is clearly running out of resources? If you were Senator Obama and you had more money, more delegates, more states and more endorsements coming in on a daily basis, would you change your campaign to accomodate a Clinton demand? I don't think so.
WHAT?!?  N.O. is still in the toilet?  I thought Brownie did a heck of a job there...say it ain't so!!
Obama is a sheep in wolves clothing. He does not have the mental sharpness to make his own plans, rather using Clinton's intellect to appeal to others. Obama get a plan or get out of the race! He is making this race about race, trying to portray himself as the wonderful Dr. King in the old days, totally missing the conceptualization intended. I'm disgusted at his tones of it's our time. This is America and it's everyone's time, not just the black american's, whose prejudiced in this race? If Clinton made the statement it's the white american's time again, the black leaders would make the biggest to do about it! Fair is fair and wrong is wrong, don't be a hippocrit Obama!
Could we please stop this, "Why is Obama afraid to debate Clinton?" nonsense? He's not afraid to debate her. He's smarter than to give her free air time when she's running with less money than he is. There will most likely be at least one more debate in this primary season, but not agreeing to a debate a week doesn't have anything to do with fear; it has everything to do with strategy. Obama's not the one who squandered nation-wide name recognition: he's had to build a national reputation based on one speech in 2004. He's had to fight people on national television calling him "Osama", ridiculing his middle name, and spreading the false rumor that he's a Muslim. All Clinton's had to fight are facts about things she's actually done and said. Obama hasn't taken a single vote for granted. Clinton can't say that.
Nice to see the Hillary gang and their usual comments. Obama hasn't refused any other debates. In fact, he said that he would take her up on at least one. The reason that Clinton is so desperate to debate is that she's trying to keep him from stumping. She knows Obama's a better speaker and she also knows that the more people get to know him, the better he does (and the worse she does). She is also looking for free TV time.  These two have already debated 18 times. So the "all talk no substance" line is baseless.  If you want to know Obama's stance on the issues, go to his website.
Yes the republicans have been so good to the Katrina victims.Didn't they give them the formeldahyde travel trailers?Look how good Mr Brown was to them----And Haley Barbour, the baloon faced govornor of MS took funds from the Katrina victims to build more and more casinos.George Bush was the president when Katrina occured same as he was the president on 9-11 when people lost their lives. How come you republicans always blame Clinton for every disaster that occured on your watch?Spineless liars always.Never take responsibility---oh yeah the surge is working Mccain---he is not fit to be president of this country----just Bushs butt kisser.
After debating Hillary 18 times, I don't think that Barack is afraid to debate her. You Hillary supporters know very well that she wants debates so that she can get air time. She's facing a financial squeeze at the moment.
