Obama speaks on New Orleans recovery

Posted: Thursday, February 07, 2008 1:00 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan
NEW ORLEANS -- With an absence of pomp and circumstance, plus a lack of campaign literature, large HOPE signs, and music that usually swells as if it would introduce a rock star, Obama took the stage at Tulane with a sober introduction and sobering message on the state of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

The policies that Obama introduced were not new; he had introduced a Katrina recovery plan on the second anniversary of the storm earlier this year. But he revisited them and his focus on educational policy just two days before Louisiana will hold a presidential primary.

Certain aspects of Obama’s program stood out, designed to curry favor with local residents to help New Orleanians reap economic benefits. For example, jobs and contracts awarded for reconstruction should go to a resident of the city first.

“The policies of my administration don’t end in places like the Ninth Ward. They begin in places like the Ninth Ward,” Obama told the crowd, speaking of the devastated area of the city that came to symbolize the depth of poverty not only in New Orleans but in the country.

Calling New Orleans a “tale of two cities,” Obama urged the students at Tulane University, where he was speaking, to stay in their community after graduation to rebuild New Orleans. He also emphasized his education policies, positioning them as a necessary fulcrum to help residents here lift themselves out of poverty.

Obama saved most of his criticisms for Bush, but he seemed to have Clinton in his sights when he said, "You challenge the status quo and suddenly the claws come out."

The crowd was rowdy by the time Obama finished, cheering loudly and turning their cheer for The Saints into one for Obama.

“Who’d that? Who’d that? Who’d them say they gonna beat Obama?” the students chanted as the filed out. The campaign estimated that 3,5000 people were present to hear Obama’s speech, with an overflow crowd of 1,500 people. After the speech Obama, spoke to the overflow and went to tour a local school where students are still learning in modular trailers. After Louisiana, Obama head to Lincoln, NE.

Obama has NOT refused further debates.  He's agreed to a debate schedule for the future along with the other candidates well in advance.  Now Clinton feels some pressure, and she wants to renegotiate the deal.

Sort of like trying to claim Florida and Michigan after originally agreeing (in writing no less) that they didn't count.

Seeing as I've seen more debates between democratic candidates in the last year than perhaps in my entire life starting with the 1980 election I'ld say we all pretty much know exactly where the candidates stand on issues.

Hillary is welcome to follow obama around and address her issues to the same people he's addressing his to.  She has after all raised over 100 million dollars by the end of decemeber for this race.  And added 18 Million with her efforts and loan in january alone.

If financial decisions like Hill Force one her private jet intended to make her look presidential  have left her strapped for cash and looking for free air time Get on a bus like McCain and drive.

Not to mention if you budgeted and spent for a february 5 win and couldn't deliver it Does call ones judgement and financial management skills into question.
Obama refuses to have any further debates, ask yourself why ?

For the people with brains... it's obvious that Clinton wants more debates because she doesn't have the funds to advertise like Obama.  So she's clearly look for free air time on the Networks.... look how she plugged her website on the last debate.  They have had about 17 debates already... what else do they need to debate?  Hillary is just looking for free exposure and the Obama campaign is smart not to give it to her.
it's funny how First Read is filtering out comments...notice how only comments about the debates are shown...you guys are hungry for more debates because the main stream media will be going broke too since the people are hipped to the pundits spin...down goes the media and the truth will be spread through real ordinary people via BLOGS...what is left to debate...here are the issues that voters must decide between

Iraq War
Clinton does not offer a definite time table for withdrawal as we saw in the last debate
Obama does...out within 16 months

Foriegn Policy
Clinton does not think the President should meet directly with Dictators/Enemies.
Obama does...remember different mind set.

Ecomonic Stimulus Plan
Hillary didn't want tax rebates (now she does) and want to freeze interest rates.
Obama included tax rebates from the beginning and he thinks freezing the interest rates is a bad idea and only helps in the Banks.

Health Care
Clinton want mandates
Obama does not
First, everyone thinks there are too many debates. Now, Clinton can't afford to buy TV ads, so they want free media. I'll be interested to see how desperate you people are in a month after Obama wins 5 or 6 more states before March.
Why does he say "The policies of my administration DON'T end in ....”????  Wouldn't it be correct to say "The policies of my administration WON'T end in...."

Either his grammer is just as poor as President Bush, or he is getting seriously ahead of himself to the point of delusion....  I am sure the rallies are quite exciting, and I don't want to be too much of a downer, but I think there just might be a few wee small steps between a pep rally and having an administration.
I DONT UNDERSTAND THIS SUBSTANCE V. TALK ISSUE. YOU CAN TELL THAT PEOPLE WHO BELIEVE THAT OBAMA IS ALL TALK.. GET THERE INFORMATION FROM THE MEDIA IF YOU TAKE THE TIME AND READ ABOUT HIS STANCE ON ISSUES FROM HIS WEBSITE YOU CAN EVEN DOWNLOAD HIS 25 PAGE HEALTHCARE PLAN. LOOK JUST BECAUSE HE IS NOT WALKING AROUND LIKE MRS. CLINTON LIKE A "KNOW IT ALL" BUT CAN'T EVEN EXPLAIN HER IRAQ VOTE (THE MOST IMPORTANT VOTE IN ANY POLITICIANS CAREER) DOES NOT MEAN ANYTHING. WHAT IS THE POINT OF "KNOWING IT ALL IN THE UNIVERSE" BUT WHEN YOU GET ELECTED WONT BE ABLE TO PASS ANYTHING BECAUSE (UNFORTUNELY) NOBODY WANTS TO WORK WITH YOU. HOW DO WE EXPECT TO REALLY TACKLE ISSUES? I THINK THEY ARE BOTH VERY SMART SENATOR CLINTON IS ALWAYS TRYING TO PROVE HOW SMART SHE IS BUT SENATOR OBAMA DEMONSTRATES IT.

LETS EXPLAIN THE CHANGE OBAMA STANDS FOR SPECIFICALLY:
 * PUSHING BACK AGAINST THE SPECIAL INTEREST
 * BEING ABLE TO DISAGREE WITHOUT BEING DISAGREEABLE
 * INSPIRING THE AMERICAN PEOPLE
 * GOVERNMENT TRANSPARENCY

NOT ONLY POLICY CHANGES OR PARTY CHANGES BUT REAL CHANGE AND BRINGING DEMOCRACY BACK TO OUR GOVERNMENT. I'M SORRY BUT MRS.CLINTON DOES NOT STAND FOR THAT. SHE IS A WONDERFUL AND SMART SENATOR BUT IT'S TIME FOR REAL CHANGE AND PROGRESS.
You have to ask yourself why Billary, and their faithful followers, want another debate with Obama.  Has he not proven that he is well educated, connected with the issues that are facing America, and prepared to bring a newness to this country that we have needed for some time now?  Experience is one thing, but you need a new perspective to address the reoccuring problems in this country.  Do we really need another 4 years of the same rhetoric?  If you vote for Billary that is what you will get.  Besides, she ran the country already for 12 years when Bill was chasing the skirts of young interns.
Clinton Playbook    ~debate debate debate

                   ~call Obama supporters "Cultish"

Well, glad to see Obama is not letting her pull him to her schedule. She's just looking for the free media! Obama has MANY Voters to speak with, enough of Hillary!
And we certainly wouldn't want to accuse the Messiah Obama for pandering now would we???

Where was he BEFORE he was running for President??!! What a tool!
Obama refuses to have any further debates, ask yourself why ?
Paul Gunter, Columbus, Ohio (Sent Thursday, February 07, 2008 1:11 PM)

What is there more to debate?  There is hardly anything new since the last debate.  Both Clinton and Obama repeat the very same material since the debates began.

Another debate would just be another boring show on cable TV and a waste of everyone's time.
Obama refuses to have any further debates, ask yourself why ?

Obviously, because he isn't falling for yet another of Clinton's dirty manipulative tricks to try and save her campaign. She wants more debates because she wants to keep him from meeting with voters since everywhere he gets the time to talk with voters he wins, often over coming twenty and thirty point margins that favored Clinton.
I've noticed that Clinton supports are becoming more and more bitter, cynical, and divisive as this campaign goes on. Some of the bile and vitriol they are levelling at Obama is simply astounding. It is almost as telling of the candidate they support as her campaign's attempts to spin barely surviving super tuesday into a victory. If Hillary had lost any of those big states where she won, everyone a place she held double digit leads until days before the election, she would be finished already. Now she gets to hang on through and keep trying to spin expectations and near defeats into "victories".
I hope democrats wise up and realize that they need independents to win in November, and most of us won't vote for Hillary, even if it does mean four more years of the republicans.
Why? Because they've had 18 debates already! The Repubs have their nominee, Romneys out, McCain in...should the two remaining Dems get in a debate and tear each other apart NOW? Wake up, People! Mrs. Clinton seems to have no interest in what is good for the Party.
TASINI CALLED FOR DEBATES BACK IN 2006 AND WAS GIVEN THE BRUSH OFF BY HRC CAMPAIGN.

One person somewhat amused by the Clinton campaign's earnest call for a debate a week was her 2006 New York Senate primary challenger,  Jonathan Tasini, who spent months fruitlessly demanding a debate that year.

He was met by promises from the Clinton campaign to "see how the campaign develops," a line Howard Wolfson memorably repeated to me hours before the polls opened.

------2006 DAILY NEWS ARTICLE
Howard Wolfson, a Clinton spokesman, did fire a parting shot yesterday. He was asked again whether Clinton would debate her challenger. And with hours before the polls were to open, he offered the same response he's given for months: "We will see how the campaign develops," he said
Enough with the debates.  What good will it do anyone to have Hillary, once again, refuse to say how she would enforce her health care mandate and deny that going to war in Iraq was a mistake?

The debate ploy reeks of desperation, just like the self-serving effort to get FL/MI to count.
Why give Hillary free air time, no more then 1 debate, that is it? If you want Hillary to win, then send her cash like hundreds of thousands of folks have for Obama.
clintons unsavory connections will come into play now, her and bill's experience in arm twisting and corrupt political shenanigans is unmatched, they will do what ever it takes regardless of legality or what's right to further their dynasty, their lust for wealth and power always trumps fair play, couple this with the fact that the republicans are salivating for a hillary nomination, because they know they can beat her in the general, and you have a situation that is sure to become very ugly and dishonest, with the american citizens wishes tossed to the curb
Why doesn't he debate...Why doesn't he debate...Why doesn't he do what WE want him to do? Sounds like the first signs of desperation from the Clinton crowd! Why would Obama, or anyone for that matter, debate Hillary on her schedule. Don't worry he's coming!!
If he has the jobs go to residents what's he going to do with the thousands of illegals there.  Oh I know he'll make them legal residents and give them a drivers license and throw in free healthcare.  Saint Obama - isn't he great!
Obama can blame President Bush all he wants.... jerry/corpus christi texas (Sent Thursday, February 07, 2008 1:13 PM)

It happened on his watch like 9/11

The recovery effort after Katrina is one of the biggest DISASTERS of the Bush Administration. No way to Spin it - Sorry!
What a phoney wingbag. Who is this guy? Does ANYONE know?
Paul,

Have you asked YOURSELF why?  Can you not come to some logical conclusion?  Really?

They have already had 18 debates.  He said he would have another one.  Why would they have weekly debates anyway?  Oh yeah, to take up the time that Obama would have spent with voters and give Hillary free air time.

It's called common sense Paul!
just asking wrote, "After the speech he spoke.......  He's always talking to people but notice, nNEVER taking questions like Hillary does all the time now.  If Obama's so great, why is he afraid to debate Hillary?..........  And 3/4 of the states he's won weren't even primaries, but caucuses which are not at all representative of the population and totally undemocratic.  How many of us have several hours to travel miles from home to be pressured in front of others to vote for a particular person instead of making up our minds in private as the founders intended?
/ Well, I surely understand your point about people wanting to be behind the curtain and make up their minds.  I also know that in the past people committed many immoral acts because they were not fully taken to task.  If you don't have anything to hide, you shouldn't feel pressured to vote one way or the other.  In my opinion, it's still democracy in action.  On the other hand, I agree with you on taking questions from the crowd.  He must do that.
Obama will probably appoint Mayor Ray Nagin to head FEMA.  Both are all talk and no action.
Just Asking:

The only reason why Hillary wants to debate is because she has to! She's low on money and the advertising would be free. Come' on. Who is "Just Asking anyway"; Bill Clinton?
Obama refuses to have any further debates, ask yourself why ?
Paul Gunter, Columbus, Ohio (Sent Thursday, February 07, 2008 1:11 PM)

He might have to answer questions rather than preach to the crowds of lemmings.
To "just asking" -

There have already been 18 debates, more than any other previous election.  I know I'm tired of watching the candidates repeat the same talking points over and over again, as are many people I have spoken to.  These debates are not really "debates" anyway; they are "question and answer" sessions... not very informative.  I would rather have the candidates go out and actually spend their time meeting voters rather than on television.

Given her recent financial situation, Clinton wants debates not to "inform the electorate" but to essentially give herself free TV air time.  Notice that when Clinton was running for re-election for her Senate seat that she repeatedly refused requests from her opponent to debate.

Per B Smith from Politico:

Clinton, eager to debate

One person somewhat amused by the Clinton campaign's earnest call for a debate a week was her 2006 New York Senate primary challenger, anti-war labor activist Jonathan Tasini, who spent months fruitlessly demanding a debate that year.

He was met by promises from the Clinton campaign to "see how the campaign develops," a line Howard Wolfson memorably repeated to me hours before the polls opened.
I’d like Bill to try that racist rhetoric he pulled up there in South Carolina. Secret Service would have to burn New Orleans down to get him out!!!
There is no substance to Obama.  He keeps talking about change.  Change what and how is he going to chnange things?  Where is the substance?  His campaign is just a shell.  I think he is in over his head.  Why doesn't he debate Hillary?  What is he afraid of?  He will reach millions in a debate more than he reaches in his 20 minute speeches to college students.
If you want a rock star go to a concert.  If you want a President that will put our country back-on the right track-Vote for Hillary.  Hillary has substance, a command of the issues, experience and wants to change our country from day one.  She has ideas for our government that she will put into action from day one.  If Obama wins I think we will find a man who is in over his head and our whole country will be in big trouble.
You have to have a tough skin to be President and if Obama is afraid to debate Hillary he does not have the qualities necessary to be commander in chief.  The Reublicans will make mince meat out of him the way they did with John Kerry.
Hillary has beat the Republicans and she is tough and won't let them deprive her of the Presidency.
I always have been moved by a Billy Joel concert but I wouldn't want Billy Joel to be our President.

Obama is saying no to Hillary's 4 debate request because he doesn't NEED the debates. She does. She needs to stay in the spotlight while Obama goes on the upcoming run of taking every primary/caucus from here to March 4th. Televised debates are free promotion for Hillary while her campaign runs on fumes. Why should the Obama campaign help her stay relevant?!

If she can't take any of these upcoming primaries, she'll be down 30 states to 10. At that point, she needs to step down. Continuing on will be nothing more than an effort to undermine our democracy by heading to Denver without a winner and using her political connections among superdelegates to steal the election.
Hey, all you Hillary-bots, stop taking your cues from the Clinton campaign. There's good reason why Obama won't debate Hillary anymore. We've had 17 Democratic debates already. Ain't that enough? (It sure is for me.) Why should Obama give Hillary the free media exposure of more debates? Now that she's down for the count, it doesn't make political sense for Obama to give her a hand up. She certainly wouldn't do the same for him if the situation is reversed. Just ask Hillary's last opponent for her Senate seat (she pretended he didn't even exist). Now's the time for Obama to maximize the pressure on Hillary, so that she'll have no choice but to JUST ... DROP ... OUT. Gonna happen eventually.
why should have a debate a week when it is clear clinton only wants them because she is out of money and needs free air time. shameless. i would have no problem with one or two this month but there have been 17. it's not his fault people didn't watch or are to lazy to look up each persons position on their own. he is doing what he does best which is talk to people on the ground, to bad for clinton the more people see her in person the worse she does. she is trying to get him off the campaign trail and into more debates controlled by hillbots like wolf and cnn (clinton new network). sheesh.
The 'refuse to debate' ruse is obvious, Clinton flacks.  Your candidate has no money (because the handwriting is on the wall).  Kucinich wanted debates, too.  They're 'free.'

Memo to Hillary:  Observe the party-first approach of Romney and Guiliani. Every day and every dollar you make the likely winner bleed creates the chance for Dr. Strangelove McCain to consolidate both his position and the substantial Republican $$.  Take a hard look is all i'm saying.
jerry/corpus christi texas,

I agree Ray Nagin needs to go. He is an awful mayor! Even worse than the one we have in Los Angeles.

But the only way a Republican will win the presidency in '09 is if Hillary wins the Democratic nomination.

You'll see millions of Dems flock to our other liberal candidate... McCain!
Hillary is only trying to schedule more debates so that she can get some free air time.  She's not getting enough $$ in the door to run ads competitively, so she's trying to keep her exposure up as much as possible.

Do you really think Obama is scared to debate her at this point?  They already had everything from a love-fest debate to a no holds barred brawl and he's the one whose poll numbers have increased.
The real question is why does hillary want to debate him every week thru March 4th?

It's because she has tapped her donors for the cash to compete in advertising!

That's why she wants free publicity. Not because "the issues are so important".

She's weakening and Obama knows it!

It's similar to boxing. When the faster boxer is outmatching the stronger one-the slower boxer will try to keep the faster boxer closer, by grabbing him by his arms, trying to get some rest from the faster boxer.

This is what Hillary is trying to do. 5 debates in 3 weeks? What a joke Hillary, if you were the stronger canidate you would be doing the same thing Barak is doing: Turning you down!

Obama is clearly getting stronger and stronger-and Hillary knows it. She can see how he's building on women and latinos are not gonna be a factor again until March.

So she's in trouble up to her eyeballs and she knows it!

5 debates in 4 weeks. What a joke. You should just resign Hillary. Just step aside like Romney....Obama has history to make. You clearly don't.

To Chris Penn -

"All talk, no substance"?

Have you read Obama's 82-page, detailed outline of his plans?  When you have, please let me know what doesn't amount to "substance."

Here's an AP press article on Obama's "lack of substance" -

http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5jfwiTMvbxKZec4z-ouww5y_5zfhgD8U753I80

And here's a Washington Post article that gives Obama's economic stimulus plan a grade of "A-" and Clinton's plan a grade of "C+"

When is Hillary going to New Orleans?

Never! She's already said she dosen't need the Black vote to win. We'll see if that comes back to bite her!
It doesn't matter how big the turned out in Obama's or his high profile supporters' rallies. It has been proved, especially in California, that it did not translate them to votes. People go as of it is a free circus to watch just for fun of it.

Obama is afraid of debate as he knows that he has no clues of the issues, but with a lot of slogans.
Please...there have been 18 debates and the last several have had record breaking viewership.  They have become boring as they just keep saying the same thing over and over.  The Clintons want the debates because their campaign is now broke and the debates get them free press.  some of you people on both sides are like children.  Lets argue the facts and not emotion.
Mr. Obama has the judgement and intelligence to help New Orleans recover.
Obama is clueless.  Suave and charming and clueless.
Obama has no substance beyond his general BS and that is why he won't debate or allow access from the press.  He hoping his oratory skills will be enough for the young of mind and liberal elite.  It’s amazing that the supposed highly educated are not smart enough to ask any questions of substance.
Jerry, come on.  Let it go with the DEM blame game on Katrina.  This whole episode gets enough blame for eveyone.  Unfortunately, it starts with W.  LA looks like a sure DEM victory to me come NOV.  Provided it's Obama leading our ticket.

Go Obama!

You'll get your substance. Any logical thinking person would have done that first.

Another low educated Hillary supporter!

At least he is in Louisiana. Where is Clinton? Especially if she is for the people.... She was in NY and California but not in the smaller states? Plus she is desperate for the debates NOW because she is running low on money!!
Ummm, I realize that most of you Hillary supporters aren't quite au fait with current news, but Senators Clinton and Obama have debated about every other week. Frankly, Clinton does not debate well.

As to how a caucus is run?  If you haven't been to one, try not to sound ignorant.  Our caucus site was right up the road from our house, 10 minutes away, no farther then if I had gone to vote. My daughter's was 1/2 a block from her house.  You go there to cast your vote for your candidate.  No pressure, and you don't have to stay for the business part.

As to Bush and Katrina?  His aides had to make a dvd that they were fearful of showing him so he would realize that a major American City had been wiped out.  And that is not to say that the mayor did much better.

So, grow up.....
Senator Obama has taken questions from the audience throughout the campaign in hundreds of town halls.    At the huge rallies it is nearly impossible to move, let alone organize a question and answer session.   Hillary came to the realization that she needed to answer some questions after she started losing.   Crying on T.V. will not win you the presidency.

By the way, the "why won't you debate me" strategy is known to insiders as "the loser's hope."
You ask why Obama isn't jumping at the chance to debate Hilary every week like she's asked?  Simple - she's running out of money.  If she has to use her own money just to have 1/3 of what he's raising, how can she afford to pay for ads in the states that are having primaries.  She knows that a debate will be covered nationally by CNN and the like, in the press, and locally in whatever state its held in.  But why should Obama help to give her the air time?

From the last debate, we've seen that there won't be the fireworks that the media relishes.  They'll tout the minor differences in their plans for the 142nd time, and the pundits will continue to say the same things they've said the last 142 times.  But by getting out to the communities, and really talking about issues with the voters, Obama clearly has an advantage.  Why should he give it up because she's out of steam financially?
Paul Gunter, Columbus, Ohio wrote:

------------------------------------------------------

Answer: She has no more money to compete in all states?

Was that a trick question?

If the tables were turned she would do the same thing. Maybe we should ask Obama to dumb down his campaign so people like you and Chris Penn can keep up.

I'll get right on that with an email to the Obama people.
