McCain Veepstakes speculation begins

Posted: Friday, February 08, 2008 1:01 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Lauren Appelbaum
Although McCain will not admit he is the Republican nominee, he did answer a question on how he would pick his vice president -- telling reporters in Norfolk, Va., that where a potential vice presidential candidate lives would not impact his decision.

"The process will begin and the fundamental principle behind any selection of a running mate would be whether that person is fully prepared to take over and share your values, your principles, your philosophy, and your priorities," McCain said, explaining how he would pick a vice president. "I think that's the first and only real criteria for the selection of a running mate."

"And by the way, from a practical standpoint, I think that former President Clinton and former Vice President Gore showed that you don't have to be regionally different," McCain continued. "I think that America is such now, that the quote, regional differences, don't play the role that maybe they did in earlier times."

McCain stressed he is not thinking about that decision now and reminded reporters that Huckabee is still in the race. "I don't want in any way to discount the candidacy of Governor Huckabee. He's in this race and for me to dismiss him, I think would be inappropriate and would be inappropriate and unrealistic."

The Arizona senator also said although he doesn't know if we'll know the Republican nominee earlier than the Democratic one, he would rather the process not be drawn out.

"If there's a contested race, if it continues to be contested on the Democratic side, then there's more attention to the candidates, there's more current media on their part," he said. "I don't know how this thing plays out but from my personal standpoint, the earlier the better."

I guess there is a 50/50 chance that Huckabee ends up as McCain's running mate.  He is sharp and charismatic, but he would spend too much, and he shares McCain's weakness on immigration.

Tom Ridge supports abortion and would alienate much of the Republican base.  Romney's conservative credentials are too new.  Of the possibilities I can think of, Fred Thompson seems the most likely so far, but he is not at all exciting. and his conservative rating is only a couple of points higher than McCain's.  I would like to see a small government consitutionalist who shares McCain's pre-emptive approach to fighting terror.  I do not know who that might be.
I'll bet he picks Condoleezza Rice as his VP.
She'd be a trifecta: woman, african-american,
and conservative.
Johnson - I thought I was the only one saying that. I agree, he'll pick Lieberman if... Clinton gets the nomination.

With Clinton, McCain has the freedom to do what he wants, knowing the Republican base will be behind him no matter what.

If the Democrats nominate Obama, McCain will feel more pressure to pick a running mate the entire base - hawks, tax cutters, fiscal disciplinarians and evangelicals - already know and trust.
Huh, Obama is the anti-Christ?

Well, if we're down to this level of analytical childishness, then Clinton is Wile E. Coyote, hauling her ACME anti-Obama dirty e-mail launcher dangerously close to that cliff... you know, the one she doesn't see until she's three steps over it.

Don't look down, Hillary. They never fall until they look down.
Rob Portman would be a good VP choice. He is from Ohio, served as OMB Director, in Congress, and as US Trade Representative.
Yee-haw! Let's bring on the Rapture! I say we vote for Fred from Dallas' Anti-Christ candidate and watch the cities burn.  Let the debt soar! Let the streets run red with blood! Let us be hated around the world! Let us let our own people die on rooftops as the waters rise.  Oh wait...
Straight Talk will give his old buddies from The Keating Five every consideration.
Let me guess Fred, oh self proclaimed messiah of politics, you're a lily-white old man just like the rest of your party.
Hillary called McCain to inquire about the job. She figures she'll be available soon. She won't sit in the oval office, but at least she'll be back in the White House. She probably has a few things hidden away that she wants to pick up.
I think that too much conservative politics is old hat.We need a moderate for president and i think liberman would be an excellent choice for V.P. Senator McCain will make the U.S.A. GREAT AGAIN AS OUR NEXT PRESIDENT.VOTE McCAIN !
"The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Friday shows John McCain (R) leading Hillary Clinton (D) 46% to 43%. Barack Obama (D) leads McCain 47% to 42%.
Despite much commentary about McCain’s challenge in uniting the Republican Party, the Arizona Senator’s support from Republicans is just as solid as Obama and Clinton’s support from Democrats. Obama leads McCain among voters not affiliated with either major political party. McCain leads Clinton among the unaffiliateds"
Did anyone check out the recent picture of McCain burying his head into Bushes chest during a gigantic hug?

Something tells me you have this picture blown up and in your bedroom.
