Obama on superdelegates, McCain

Posted: Friday, February 08, 2008 4:25 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan
SEATTLE -- In his third press availability in three days, Obama would not commit to a position he had put forward previously that superdelegates should vote the way their states did -- should the Democratic nomination come down to their votes.

"I think those superdelegates and elected officials and party insiders would have to think long and hard about how they approach the nomination if the people they represent have said that Obama is our guy," Obama said the morning after the February 5th primaries.

Asked today if superdelegates should vote the way their states votes, Obama hedged. "We haven't' had a lengthy discussion with all of our superdelegates -- our super delegates they should vote for me," Obama said.

He added: "The question for those not yet committed and the superdelegates that are still out there … trying to make up their minds -- my strong belief is that if we end up with the most states and the most pledged delegates from the most voters in the county that it would be problematic for the political insiders to overturn the judgment of the voters. And you know, I think that should be the guiding approach to determine who would be the nominee. I think it's also important for the superdelegates to think about who will be in the strongest to beat John McCain in November and who will be the strongest to make sure that we are broadening the base, bring people who historically have not involved in politics into the fold."

Responding to a conference call by the Clinton campaign that it would be impossible for neither Obama nor Clinton to win the Democratic nomination, Obama said that he "hadn't studied the math."

"Obviously this thing is tight, and if we keep on going and we've got 20% of delegates allocated to superdelegates and you need 50% to win and it stays roughly, you know, 40%-40%, you know, obviously you're not going to get the majority that's necessary. But I think it's too early to speculate."

He added that there was still a month to go and many "twists and turns" ahead. The nominating contests in Ohio and Texas will be held on March 4, less than four weeks away.  In a conference call today, Obama's deputy campaign manager, Steve Hildebrand, said the campaign was aggressively hiring staff in Ohio and Texas, focusing on local hires to organize and recruiting support from state and local officials.

And in another sign that John McCain is as much the man to beat in this election as Hillary Clinton is the woman to beat, Obama forcefully said, "Yes, absolutely," to a question on whether he would argue that he has better judgment on foreign policy than John McCain similar to how he has argued that against Senator Clinton.

"Look on the most important foreign policy decision in perhaps a generation, I strongly believe that John McCain got it wrong. I respect his service to our country and also would admit that he has been entirely consistent throughout the Iraq debate. He has been for it from the start and he's still for it, and he wants to be for it one hundred years from now," he said.

Calling it an "enormous strategic blunder," he added that he looked forward to having that argument with McCain on the "consequences of the Iraq war."

Asked if the nation should do more about gun control in light of recent shootings, Obama said that he would try to close the gun show loophole. "I think makes sense even to those who care deeply about the right to bear arms," he said.

Senator Clinton was directly referenced only once during the press conference, regarding a comment Obama had made previously about Republicans using a "dump truck" of attacks against her and was asked if it qualified as a personal attack.

Obama bristled at the comment, and said it was not a "personal attack" but a response to the Clinton argument that somehow he was more vulnerable to attack than Clinton was. "I was  responding to a simple point that she would be insulated from attack despite the fact that we know they make a cottage industry out of attacking her," he said.

Obama's press conference was held at McKinstry, a green company in Seattle. Obama was introduced by Seattle's mayor, who said that the city had forged ahead with reducing greenhouse gas emissions despite an absence of leadership in Washington and called Obama a potential "partner" in Washington on the issue of climate change. Earlier, Obama participated in a walking tour through the company.

Another endorsement for Obama? Former Republican Senator Lincoln Chafee considers voting for him in RI’s primary -

Oh Obama you sweet, adorable thang!  Be very careful what you say, the super delegates have no idea how precious you are yet, maybe a rip roaring bring 'em home to the "O" will bring 'em your way.  Relax you are the MAN!  Now take a big breath and do the MATH, being president is a big , hard job!
I think it is foolish to assume that Obama will be harder for the Repugs to beat.  We all know what they will do to Hillary - we don't know what they will do to Obama.  We also don't know well he can take the beating.  And if McCain teams up with Condi Rice?  If she takes him up - it is a genious move.  Like it or not, it will attract a lot of black support.  This is the kind of thing to expect from the Repugs.  A black VP - a hispanic VP - a female VP.  Best amunition at Obama.
Of course, Obama does not want Michigan and Florida votes to count, he'll LOSE. In Florida alone, where all names were on the ballot, even though no Dem campaigned there, Hillary received nearly a MILLION VOTES, nearly twice as many as Obama. Hillary won Michigan as well. Of course, Michigan and Florida should have their votes counted, be seated and have full participation in the national Dem convention in August. For Howard Dean to suggest they hold another primary is ludicrous, they don't have the money to that, Michigan has the worst economy in the nation and Florida's Dems are broke too. Dean is incompetent. Is Obama trying to disenfranchise voters?
It's time for Sen. Obama to gracefully exit the race before he completely destroys the Dem party and our chances for victory in November, he's unqualified and unelectable. VOTE SMART - VOTE HILLARY CLINTON FOR PRESIDENT!!!!!
Don't expect Obama to take on tough issues. His records say it.

When facing tough votes, he voted  129 "present" votes in the Illinois legislature on issues such as promoting school discipline and prohibiting sex shops near places of worship, and he missed 39.7% of votes in US senate to avoid votes on issues such as funding the war.

If Obama really means what he says (regarding this election is about the American people), then he needs to accept debate offers from Hillary Clinton.  If he keeps declining to debate her, then he is not allowing the American voting public to make up their minds based on the key issues these two candidates differ on.  His tactic of stalling and declining to debate Hillary Clinton sends a message that he knows he's not her equal when it comes to one-on-one debating, and he is not backing up his message about change, accountability, and truth.
We need something big and good to help separate ourselves from Billary.  We need to secure the nomination as quickly as possible.

Go Obama 08!
Hey HP,
You patronizing sad little person.  Grow up.
Just got turned away from Key Arena for Obama's rally in Seattle. It seats 17,000+ and there were thousands of people who didn't make it in. Should have gotten there a little earlier...
I think the best for both clinton and obama should do is come together to form the Dream TEAM of the century. If both realy Love this Great nation of ours.
If they cooperate, democrat will rule for the next sixteen years, and the united citizens will prosper.
Afteral both espouse loving the country.
It should all be about the people.
Long Live the united States and God Bless America.
a primary vote for Hillary = a vote for McCain.

think about it.
Obviously Obama is trying to sell people that a number of small equals one large state. He is trying to convince people that 5 or 6 states whose combined turnout represents only a fraction of one large state is the same.

The more I see of Obama the less I like his character.  He prefers the MSNBC new math for counting delegates.

Hillary Clinton leads in the delegate count despite what you see on MSNBC.  If you thought that Fox News was biased towards conservatives, take a good look at the favorable coverage it gives Obama. Quoting MSNBC - Obama goes into a crowd to shake hands. Clinton goes into a crowd to "glad hand".  Obama has an organization while Clinton has a "machine".  It goes on and on like this at MSNBC.

Chris Matthews gets away with sexist remarks against Hillary Clinton.  Imus made similar reprehensible remarks against black female basketball players and he is gone (and rightly so). A double standard at MSNBC.

Hillary Clinton 2008!!!!
The Billary thing is a tad passe,so lets try to at least be original in the anti-Hillary slurs. How about Oprahma?Or Hillbill?Or Obiwama? This is acually HILLARious.(pun intended). But I'm really not OBOthered by it.Can the postings please get back to reality?
If the Nominee has to be decided by Superdelegates the party is in for a problem. Especially if they dont follow the voice of the people they represent.
People need to look at the math. Without the Florida and Michigan delegates being seated it's almost impossible for either candidate to win the nomination.

I wish we would see more stories about this. Check the math
James & Jen-
Obama won the votes cast by people who made their decision in the last week before the election. Hillary won in people who had voted early and who merely go on the Clinton name.  If they have a 'do over' in Michigan and FL and Obama actually gets to CAMPAIGN...Hillary will lose.  Fact.
Wow I don't want someone in office that's missed almost 40% of the voting in the senate. That's a lot of issues he missed being the voice for americans. Shows how much he cares about us, Shows he's in it for himself.
A.W. Langston, Los Osos, CA,
I bet you voted for Hillary in California. Anyway, Obama needs time to travel around and let people know him not waste time on useless debates. We have had 18 debates so far. Clinton's name is known by everyone and some people especially hispanics just vote on the basis of knowing that name. So be glad that Obama accepted to have two debates before March 4th, he has a right to spend his time best meeting Americans instead of some useless show that HRC wants to put.
To:  James and Jen.  I would argue that Hillary won Michigan - I know firsthand.  Hillary was the only major candidate on the ballot - and 40% of the State voted "uncommitted" - instead of voting for her.  The number would have been higher - but many otherwise democratic voters chose to vote a republican ballot. Not a win for Hillary - and not a vote of confidence in her ability.  To have another election in Michigan would just reinforce the disillusion that voters in our state had with this process.  Our voters played by the rules set forth before them, many of the other candidates have since backed out.  If Michigan does have another election the only fair thing to do - is to vote for both the Rep & Dem candidates.
I think it's going to hard to sell the "we'd be better off with Saddam in a nuke race with Iran" come November when most people will be paying attention. Especially with Iran acting the way they are now, and that's not going to "change" after Bush is gone. Is that fear mongering? Well it's no little girl left alone on the railroad tracks for a GoreBull Warming ad.
PS - To James and Jen - Michigan did count their votes - that is how we knew the results were 40% uncommitted.
Not all the superdelegates have constituencies. The right thing to do is for all the SDs to go with whichever candidate has the most pledged delegates.
Obama is childish person. You can image how he can snub his opponent, acted as a high school students. We do not need this kind of nomination.
I really hope it doesn't come down to the politicians deciding who gets the nom.  That will suck away all the excitement our party has this year, something we can't afford.
Super Delegate's ONE vote equals to more than 10,000 individual votes. This is utter nonsense. This is undemocratic and the opposite of the ideals of democracy we hold so dearly.
Obama is wrong there is a least 25 of my friends that will not support Obama in the national. Sorry but we someone who is qualified for the job.

And I  don't see how he can say he the best choice when the people who make less then 100,00 dollars a year is supporting him. We have someone like that now.
I hope that MSNBC will be fair to both Clinton and Obama. Actually your channel is two much against the Hillary.
BionicWoman, Tucson, AZ

Well put.  However, let's not think that Obama has not thought of that and has staff already preping him for that fight, and what a fight it will be.  Now, you are definitely correct regarding Condi Rice as VP with McCain.  That will be his secret weapon.  There is also my thought that Condi will decline such a position.  She is not a well-liked person and working at Stanford, she ruffled a lot of feathers.  Her personality we see on TV and read about is nothing like the real thing...like a bulldog bitting down on a piece of meet...no way he is gonna let it get away.  And of course there is that tiny problem of "me better than you so don't question my reason", attitude.

McCain will be thinking how to get the minority and liberal voters and that could very well do it.  I hope Obama has also thought of that combination.  That is a pretty powerful concept and could very well possibly work like clockwork.
"Of course, Obama does not want Michigan and Florida votes to count, he'll LOSE. WRONG WRONG WRONG!!

There was no campaign in FLA or MI, and the candidates (including Hillary) agreed NOT to campaign there, and acknowledged well in advance that there would be NO DELEGATES in either state!  Obama isn't disenfranchising anyone.... the state committees chose to disenfranchise their voters when they chose to go against the DNC and proceed with their primaries ahead of schedule.  That was THEIR choice!  The voters' issue should not be with Obama, it should be with their state dem committees!

Play by the rules... don't try to change them mid election!
Bionic Woman I never thought of that. Great insight!!!!

Hillary 08
dong
When facing tough votes, he voted  129 "present" votes in the Illinois legislature on issues such as promoting school discipline and prohibiting sex shops near places of worship, and he missed 39.7% of votes in US senate to avoid votes on issues such as funding the war.

How many times does it have to be explained that "present" votes were done for a reason and a common practice in Illinois.  Planned Parenthood has already explained that they asked Obama to vote this way.  Are you just to stupid to read the explanation or you just trying to ignore it because you feel it gives you amunition against Obama?
HP Boston--Shouldn't you be saving that for the Republicans? We have a decision to make to be sure but we need to be ready to support who ever wins. I know I am. Even if we take sure and steady aim at our foot and calmly pull the lever for Hillary, setting off a thousand Republican guffaws and chortles.
Regarding superdelegates...valid points have been made by Clinton supporters about Massachusets and Ted Kennedy and John Kerry.  If we expect superdelegates to represent the will of their constituents, then that has to apply to Massachusets as well... no one... neither Hillary or Obama.... can expect to have it both ways....

I support Obama.  I don't know how that may work out, but I think it is the only fair way.

Otherwise, if superdelegates go against the wishes of their constituents, I fear great voter dissatisfaction and disenfranchisement.  WE THE PEOPLE should choose our elected officials... not the political insiders....
Abolish the superdelegates. They are no symbols of American democracy. They stand in the way of democratic elections because it may be easy to manipulate them into voting for a particular candidate, and they may vote based on their whims. Remember they are elected officals not subject to the will of majority voters.
Obama supporters don't want the Florida delegates to vote, Obama don't want the Michigan delegates to vote and he don't want the super delegates to vote. Why don't we just cancel the elections and crown him King Obama. McCain might object, but he has been a POW before, we will just lock him up and put him back in a cage.
The MI and FL votes were NOT CONTESTED.  We have to see how the voters would vote if all the names were on the ballot (MI) and the candidates were actually allowed to campaign and gain exposure.  We've seen what that did for Obama everywhere else.

And it bears repeating that I have yet to find a single Republican operative who believes Obama would be easier to beat.  Go look at Peggy Noonan's WSJ article.  That ain't spin folks.

And dong is lying about Obama's present votes again, all of which were taken as part of a broader legislative plan or to indicate his support in principle for a bill that he believed had been improperly designed.  Do Clinton supporters ever tire of distorting and slandering?

Once again we have proved my point about the general.  The Clinton machine has thrown the kitchen sink against Obama, racial smears, Rezko, 30 year old admitted drug use, everything, and it has all blown up in their faces with independents.  Republicans will get more traction why, exactly?
Just got turned away from Key Arena for Obama's rally in Seattle. It seats 17,000+ and there were thousands of people who didn't make it in. Should have gotten there a little earlier...

Wilson, Seattle (Sent Friday, February 08, 2008 4:52 PM)

THANKS FOR THE INFO - I just spent a half hour looking for the attendance figures there.  He is filling EVERY place he goes.  Only low attendance - New Jersey with no notice and that was 13K.

You know, a complete blowout of the remaining states for Obama would not require him to do the math - that's my read.  Remember, this guy is brilliant...

And Florida will have to have a new election - turns out thousands thought they had to vote Super Tuesday - they missed the election.  AND HILLARY CAMPAIGNED HERE FOR 36 HOURS before the vote - on all local TV for 2 days...

Obama routed her in Jacksonville, where they got coverage of him from out of state - he would ROUT her in Florida today with no Edwards - they both took 60% of vote...
the international tv media seems to be running a subtle. pro-senator clinton/anti-obama campaign in the way they report their story. i dont know if anyone observes this.

Okay... allowing MI and FL to count at this point would be tantamount to holding the Super Bowl, telling the Patriots and the Giants that they can't play, but then awarding the victory to the Patriots.  After all, they had the reputation walking into it...

How about a mulligan?
Doesn't take much to pack in a bunch of tree huggers, pot heads, and anarchist in Seattle.

VA Poll: Obama, McCain Way Ahead

With four days left before Virginia voters head to the polls, a new SurveyUSA poll has Obama leading Clinton by 20 points, while McCain holds a 32-point lead over Huckabee.

Democrats (Feb. 7-8, 588 Dem LV, MoE +/- 4.1%)

Obama   59
Clinton 39

Republicans (Feb. 7-8, 382 GOP LV, MoE +/- 5.1%)

McCain   57
Huckabee 25
Paul      9

I just listened very carefully to Obama in Seattle. Anyone who is spewing this nonsense that there is no substance to this man simply has not been paying attention.
"In Florida alone, where all names were on the ballot, even though no Dem campaigned there, Hillary received nearly a MILLION VOTES, nearly twice as many as Obama. Hillary won Michigan as well."

I wonder why you feel the need to exaggerate? In Florida Clinton got 50% of the vote, Obama 33%. 50% is not nearly twice 33%. It's 16% off.

In Michigan, despite Obama and Edwards both removing their names from the ballot, Clinton only got 55%. 'Uncommitted' was only 15% behind. That's hardly impressive.

The votes from Florida and Michigan should, of course, NOT be counted. You can't change the rules halfway through the contest. If they have another poll, that might be a different matter...
Old folks love Clinton!  Especially the ladies... the older ladies... "Oh, I need you, Boomin' Grannies, I said I want you, Boomin' Grannies..."
Andrew Sullivan over at Daily Dish just wrote the absolute best post I've read arguing for Obama, explaining (in his words) "The Unemotional Case for  Obama." Check it out here: http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2008/02/the-unemotional.html
Mrs Clinton is the past! She owes so many big corporate and lobbysts favours...Independants and moderate don't like her and republicans hate her.It will amount to a miracle to see her through back to the White House...And,for someone to suggest that african-americans will rush to vote for McCain because of a condi is simply rubbish! What did she accomplish for them? Was she helpful when Bush ignored their suffering during Hurricane Katrina?Come on,see beyond race!
Senator Obama is by far the best candidate running for President. His integrity, principled judgment, and inspirational leadership starkly contrasts with Clinton's willingness to assert and spread falsehoods, unprincipled vote for the Iraq War, and wretched failure in her attempt to reform healthcare in 1993.

We are all paying for her lack of courage to stand against the war and have been waiting 15 years for healthcare reform that she and her husband did not bring to us after 8 years in the White House and her 7 years in the Senate. Has all her years of experience accomplished anything positive that you can remember? Clinton supporters, feel free to cite anything but not stuff principally due to Bill.

Meanwhile, Senator Obama co-authored and passed landmark ethics bills in Illinois and Washington, curtailing the influence of lobbyists and special interests. These are the same lobbyists and special interests whose money Clinton accepts and to whom she is beholden. Senator Obama does not accept money from them, so he is only beholden to the American people.

Senator Obama has broad support across the U.S. His numerous backers are widespread and motivated, while Clinton's backers are faltering, disappointed that she frittered away her huge lead, and beginning to realize that they are not backing the best and most honorable candidate in the race.

Senator Obama wins converts every day. Once voters realize how much preferable he is to Clinton... or to McCain... they stick loyally by him, embracing and then passing along his message that we must unify to create positive change.

Don't give Clinton and the Republicans any encouragement. It will only make the changes that we seek as a country more difficult to enact.

If you want a change from the divisiveness of the politics of cynicism, if you want seasoned experience (11 years as an elected official, having won 3 elections), if you want someone who stands on principle, then Vote for Senator Barack Obama. Register, go the caucuses tomorrow, Saturday, and place a check mark next to his name.
So let me get this straight.  You think the Michigan and Florida votes should count.  Hmmmm.  Let's see; that would be like a basketball game is scheduled to start at 7:00, one team arrives at 6:00 and starts playing and scores 100 points before the other team shows up.  So at the start of the game at 7:00 the score is 100-0.  Give me a break.  The problem is that so many states have this early voting crap going on that people with name recognition (whether it is deserved or not) are being voted for just because of the name.

As for the debate, I wouldn't go near it.  They have had a bunch and unless they are going to get better at asking questions and following up, it is a staged event.  It kills me when they are asked a question and they answer what they want and no one holds them to it.  If I am Obama, I am playing to my strength and that's out in the public as much as possible.  If you want more of the same old gridlock, the vote for more of the same. I don't think Hillary can pull it off.  I don't think it is her fault but those folks hate her with a passion.
For those challeging Obama on this thread, you are wrong. Here is why... The Florida and Michigan issue was voted unanimously. You can't change the rules of the game once you start losing. If you could, I would be a chess master. As for the debates, he needs to spend time with voters. All of his voting is online. THe present votes were to dispute ballot loading. He likes to vote on one issue at a time and not backloaded special interest initiatives. Check his motions for transparency in government. He wants us all to know what our government is voting on. He has passed those laws with his own initiatives. Any more inaccurate attacks?
'...Responding to a conference call by the Clinton campaign that it would be impossible for neither Obama nor Clinton to win the Democratic nomination,...'
