Clinton appeals to voters for cash

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
TACOMA, WA -- Hillary Clinton made a financial appeal to voters at a large rally at the University of Puget Sound, just days after announcing she had loaned her campaign $5 million at the end of January.

The New York senator said that after the announcement, a friend had been surprised that she needed the money. "As some of you may have heard, I recently loaned my campaign some money because I intended to be competitive going into Super Tuesday, and I think it turned out to be a good investment with all those victories across the country. And when a friend of mine heard that I had had loaned my campaign some money she said 'Well, why didn't you tell me you needed help and of course we'll be there for you?' Well, I have been overwhelmed by the response that I've received over the last three days," Clinton said, before sharing stories of some of the 75,000 new contributors who have donated to her campaign in the last few days, including a woman who said she wanted to contribute to the campaign rather than go out for Valentine's Day.

"So I hope you will go to hillaryclinton.com read about the issues, read about what I've done for 35 years, and you will help support this campaign," the senator said.

The direct appeal to voters for money -– the first this reporter has heard at such an event –- came after a conference call in which her campaign announced they had raised $8 million online since the close of polls in California on Tuesday.

The campaign has repeatedly said that Obama has an advantage in the next several contests, but the campaign insists they are not conceding any votes. In a battle for Washintong State endorsements, Clinton has the support of both of the state's US senators, Maria Cantwell, who campaigned with her today, and Patty Murray, along with Rep. Jay Inslee. The campaign also announced the endorsement of Rep. Norm Dicks today, just hours after Washington's Gov. Christine Gregoire said she was throwing her support behind Obama.

Obama has consistently done better in caucus states and today, Clinton reprised a line similar to what was heard in the days leading up the Iowa caucuses, stressing the idea that not everyone can participate in the process and asking voters to think about those who can't be there. "If this were a primary where everybody could vote all day, I'd feel pretty good about it. But it's not. It's a caucus and you gotta show up at 1 o'clock and I already met three nurses outside and I said 'Well, are you gonna caucus for me?' and they said 'Well, we're working tomorrow', so I need all of you to redouble your efforts to go to the caucuses tomorrow to be there to stand up for what we need in a president," she said.

In an attempt to appeal to Washington State voters, the senator mentioned a key environmental issue for the state, restoring Puget Sound. "I know a little bit about this because I've been fighting to save the Long Island Sound, which is between New York and Connecticut. See I believe we owe our highest duty to our environment," she said. "When you look at Puget Sound and its importance to the ecosystem as well as to tourism and all other kinds of business and pleasure and the health of this community, this is a national priority."

The event was billed as one focused on nurses and health care, and Clinton took the opportunity to thank the American Nurses Association for its support, to explain her plan for universal health care and to argue that Obama's plan would leave 15 million people uninsured.

Over the past two days, the way Hillary brags about "loaning" $5 million to her campaign, it sounds more and more like it was just a publicity stunt to swindle people into giving her money just because they felt bad for her.

By law, you are allowed to take time off work to vote.  Hillary was a corporate lawyer for 15 years.  She should know that.
The Peoples' Choice-
The Peoples’ Choice –
Do they want to elect a media hype ‘movement’ supported by naïve ‘ideal’ worshipers?
OR
A well-credentialed, knowledgeable leader with a proven humanitarian service record both in the United States and around the world to take the helm of America and help bring her back to her pristine place in our global society.
if this had been obama. We would have heard about how he  talked about puget sound and had thousands of people at his rally. You even turn the succesful 8 million into a inconsequential item for hillary.
I'm sure you don't realize it but please have some ability to reflect on your biases
Another endorsement for Obama? Former Republican Senator Lincoln Chafee considers voting for him in RI’s primary -

It's great to see so many people feel as passionately about Hillary as Obama.  My question is, why didn't she do this months ago?  Following not leading, yet again.
Hillary, you can hire panhandlers to take care of your money problems. You paid Mark Penn too much money than he is owed, wasting your generous contributors' money that should have been well spent and well managed. And instead of contributing your own money to your own campaign like Mitt Romney, you loaned it, which just shows how ambitious you have become in winning the presidency not to serve America but to fashion your legacy.
I would have been very happy to contribute money, but I can't. I just cannot waste a penny that goes to pay a corrupt Mark Peny and a deceptive and lying Hillary Clinton. The issues on your website really don't make much sense, because you have not been consistent with your issues and have only to change in order for you to score politically. If you have been truthful and committed to serving Ameica with integrity and honesty, I would have rushed to donate.
I'm always amused when millionaires who are partially self-financing their campaigns have the gaul to ask working Americans for money.  Romney - er, I mean Hillary - should just get out her big check book again and stop sticking her hand out.
Team Clinton is making this big cash push because Gore and Edwards are about to endorse Obama.  Team Clinton knows it will be impossible to raise funds after that, so they're pulling out all the stops, including the personal loan rope-a-dope.

SHOW ME THE MONEY.

NOW GIVE ME THE MONEY.

I'M NOW GOING TO SPEND THE MONEY. (AS I SEE FIT)

Sounds kind of like her socialized healthcare plan.
It did not work for Social Security.
I sure as hell don't want to give the politicians(R or D) the option to do it again.
Folow the LEADER

From Real Clear Politics:

February 8, 2008
VA Poll: Obama, McCain Way Ahead

With four days left before Virginia voters head to the polls, a new SurveyUSA poll has Obama leading Clinton by 20 points, while McCain holds a 32-point lead over Huckabee.

Democrats (Feb. 7-8, 588 Dem LV, MoE +/- 4.1%)

Obama   59
Clinton 39

Republicans (Feb. 7-8, 382 GOP LV, MoE +/- 5.1%)

McCain   57
Huckabee 25
Paul      9

And she will have it from me after and if she is the nominee. Lord knows we will certainly need it at that point.
Gee, Hillary:

Have you got change for a nickel ?

    [;-D
Has Clinton any shame? First lying, then sliming, now begging? Maybe it's time people stopped resuscitating her campaign with their hard-earned cash, because she won't beat McCain in November and their money will go to waste.
How much of this recently-raised $8 mil can actually be used in the primary, I wonder, and how much is limited to the general election?
HAHAHA!!! She's broke. Her base support is the older demographic who cannot afford to bankroll a third term for Bill on a fixed income. Maybe she can get the health insurance lobbies to give her some more money.
Clinton is desperate.

Remember people of the Clinton campaign.

She borrowed 5 mil. Where do you think she will get her "borrowed" money back from? From the people that are putting money into her campaign now. I'm sure she is charging interest too! She won't lose anything once she loses the nomination. Now theres rumors that she "fake" this whole thing. Nice person to trust our country with?

Wake up people. She wants five debates right now. Candidates that wants more debates are usually the ones losing. They had 18 already! How many times we have to listen to the same issues! Every debate she won't admit she voted for the war. She dances around the issue,

The next seven primaries are Obama's. The Clinton's even admitted it. They know Obama will continue his momentum. Their hoping Texas and Ohio will help them. With the next seven primaries going to Obama, things can change for him in March when Texas and Ohio primaries come.. Clinton's are taking your money knowing they are not going to make it.

Talk about their main guys taking no checks for the month. Do you know their top guy makes 5 mil a year? Sure he's hurting.

Wake up people!!!!!!
Why this sudden emphasis on fund-raising?  And why couldn't Clinton supporters figure out to use the internet before?  Something is wrong in Camp Clinton.  Perhaps Gore/Edwards endorsement coming down the pike for Obama ... Perhaps these new contributors are republicans (it sounds like a Karl Rove-ian thing to do - manipulate the Democratic primary to ensure most favorable matchup with McCain).
"So I hope you will go to hillaryclinton.com read about the issues, read about what I've done for 35 years, and you will help support this campaign," the senator said.

This reeks of desperation - ask yourself if no one donates what then? I don't ever remember hearing Senator Obama begging for money - people  donate because they want to - not because they are asked to.
Let's stop the rhetoric on the health care coverage issue.

There are differences in other aspects of their healthcare proposals, primarily that the Obama plan works harder to reduce overall costs. But as for who's covered, let me make something perfectly clear...

As the plans are currently written, THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE IN THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE COVERED. What? But you say that Obama's plan is voluntary for adults, Clinton's plan is "mandatory" and so "will cover everyone" according to her.

But... There is nothing in her plan to ENFORCE the mandatory purchase of insurance. Therefore... It is VOLUNTARY!!! If someone, under her plan, does not purchase insurance... nothing happens! She has merely stated that it will have to be figured out.

This is classic "have it both ways" politics. She wants to criticize Obama for NOT mandating the purchase by everyone, yet offers NO enforcement for offenders. She is smart enough to know that if she detailed the enforcement (through fines, garnished wages, or whatever), people would like her plan a whole lot less.

Another aspect is pragmatism. Obama is wise enough to understand that a "Big Brother" mandate may just derail efforts to pass it in Congress. To turn this into a "he doesn't care" argument is vindictive and patently false (note to Hillary campaign).

At any rate, as it stands, BOTH will cover the SAME NUMBER of people. Unenforced mandates = voluntary. HRC must either declare her enforcement mechanism or quit lying about Obama's intent. And the press should begin holding her to it.
Let's be factual - the $5M was Bill's money.  Don't worry Bill will continue to make deals with high financers to get money and owe them favors when he gets into the White House.

Should Clinton win all the states because there are more women in every state.  It is discussed that Obama should win because of african americans and Hillary appealing for women for money.
So this is what its come to, an ex-President out there begging for money. The Clintons certainly have no shame. Truly pathetic.
Cash-strapped eh? Well,I understand that the Peoples Republic of China has plenty to spare.[as we discovered in 1996,when Charlie Trie,Maria Hseh,Johnny Chung,Dr.Wu[who sounds like a James Bond villain],and Mochtar Riady entered the American political lexicon].
Let's see how many people that the 8 million dollars would have paid for their health care?
LAUGH NOW QBAMA ENDORSERS, THE LAST LAUGH WILL BE ON YOU. "YOU SEE".
But its ok for Obama to swindle even more money out of his followers. Thats ok though.  You hipocrits!

Very powerful message by this writer on this web page:

A couple of things:

1. Polls don't mean anything....why even discuss them.
2. Do you have proof that Edwards and Gore will support Obama?
3. Where in the "world" are these guys getting this money from...DURNG A RECESSION AND RECORD FORCLOSURES?
4. Don't count the CLINTON MACHINE. Do some research and you'll find they get what they want.
5. It aint over til the fat lady sings or the super delegates decides that the kid has had enough fun and they put him to bed early.

Send me that money!!

Da*n these corporate jets are expensive!!
If Hillary needs more money, why don't she invest her 5 million in cattle futures, there by giving her all the money she needs.  Also what happened to all her Chinese connections? Oh, I forgot they all had to go back to China to avoid grand juries and congressional inquiries.

Ted Underwood, Champaign IL (Sent Friday, February 08, 2008 5:31 PM)

You think it matters to Bill and Hill? They'll spend it now, and lie about it later.
Hillary wants more debates because she thinks Amrica is deaf. Even the deaf does not need that much debate. Only the dumb and ignorant needs more debates. Or Hillary thought voters ahve five ears.....
WHY IS IT THAT WHEN EVER OBAMA GETS ENDORSEMENT WE HAVE TO SEE IT OVER AND OVER FROM THE MEDIA BUT WHEN HILLARY GET ENDORSMENT IT IS NEVER PUT OUT FROM THE THE MEDIA I THINK THAT THERE IS ALITTLE TO MUCH MEDIA FOR ONE CANDIATE SO WITH SO MUCH MEDIA OF CORASE HE WILL BE THE HIP HOP STAR NOT WHAT HE CAN DO IN THE WHITE HOUSE TO PROTECT AMERICANS AND WHEN HE TALKS IT AS THOUGH HE IS PRECHING IN CHURCH ALL HE TALKS ABOUT IS BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER AND AS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE THEY ARE THERE FOR THE SHOW.NOT TO PICK A CANDIATE I DID ENJOY WACHING THE MSNBC CNN AND FOX NEWS BUT NOW I FEEL THAT WHEN I WATCH IT IAM HAVEING OBAMA SHOVED DOWN MY THROAT BECAUSE IAM TIRED OF HEARING HOW GREAT ONE CANDIATE IS AND HOW NEGATIVE YOU PEOPLE ARE ABOUT OTHER CANDIATES AND I BELIVE IF HE WIN ITS NOT BECAUSE HE HAS DONE IT ON HIS OWN ITS BECAUSE OF THE MEDIA PUSHING HOW GREAT HE IS IAM SURE IF YOU PEOPLE IN THE MEDIA LOOK HARD YOU WILL ALL SO FIND SOMETHING NOT RIGHT IN HIS CLOSET TO .BUT YOU ARE TO BUSY FINDING THINGS ON THE CLINTON THAT IS NEGATIVE ALSOS THIS THING THAT HAPPEN IN SC IF IT WASNT BROUGHT UP OVER AND OVER FOR PEOPLE TO HEAR AND ALSO WE HAVE TO SEE OVER AND OVER ABOUT HIS 32MILLION THAT HE SAID CAME FROM THE INTERNET WHICH WAS NOT TRUE IF YOU CHECK THE INTERNET YOU WILL ALSO FIND THAT ALL OF HIS 32 MILLON WAS NOT JUST FROM THE INTERNET THAT HE HAD 46000 DOLLAR FUND RAISER .FROM ONE OF HIS PLEDGERS AND IF YOU ALSO CHECK YOU WILL SEE THAT A BIG PART WAS EITHER FROM THE KENNEDYS OR OPRAH  ALSO HE HAS SAID THAT HE HAS NEVER TAKING MOMEY FROM LOBBYIST BUT THE TRUTH IS THAT IS HOW HE STARTED CAMPAIN FROM DAY ONE JUST CHECK THE INTERNET .SO IF ALL YOU VETOER STILL THINK HE IS THE KING JUST CHECK THE INTERNET YOU WILL FIND OUT JUST AS MUCH ON HIM AS THE MEDIA HAS FOUND ON THE CLINTON
