Hillary: FL and MI should be heard

Posted: Saturday, February 09, 2008 2:19 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones and NBC's Mark Murray
ORONO, ME -- Clinton seemed to dismiss the idea that Florida and Michigan -- two states whose primaries she won but weren't contested and didn't award delegates -- should hold caucuses so that their delegates could be seated at the Denver convention.

In a 12-minute media avail here Saturday, the senator also said superdelegates had historically been independent for a reason, added Wisconsin to the mix of states she was feeling good about, and sought to paint Obama as "increasingly" the establishment candidate.

"I think that the people of Michigan and Florida spoke in a very convincing way, that they want their voices and their votes to be heard. The turnout in both places was record-breaking and I think that that should be respected," she told reporters. However, Clinton was the only major Democratic candidate on the ballot in Michigan, as a significant number of people there voted "Uncommitted." And it's worth noting that Clinton never spoke this way about Florida and Michigan until right before the South Carolina primary, a contest she lost decisively.

Clinton was asked whether superdelegates -- the party bigwigs and elected officials who aren't bound by the results in their states -- should in fact vote according to the choice voters in their state made, as Barack Obama suggested earlier this week. "Superdelegates are, by design, supposed to exercise independent judgment. That is the way the system works. But, of course, if Sen. Obama and his campaign continue to push this position, which is really contrary to what the definition of a superdelegate has historically been, I will look forward to receiving the support of Sen. Kennedy and Sen. Kerry," she said. Both senators are from Massachusetts, a state Clinton won on Super Tuesday.

*** UPDATE *** The Obama campaign responds to Clinton's charge.

And later: "We have always looked to a mixed system and it's been the way we've done it for as long as I can remember, and I think that again if people want to go after delegates who are in places that I've won, who are supporting somebody else, then what's good for the goose should be good for the gander."

The senator said she had sent letter to NBC in response to comments made by MSNBC's David Shuster about her daughter. "I am a mom first and a candidate second, and I found the remarks incredibly offensive. You know, I can take whatever comes my way. That's part of what I signed up for as a candidate, as an officeholder. But I think that there's been a troubling pattern of comments and behavior that has to be held accountable. So I have sent a letter to the head of NBC expressing the deep offense that I took and pointing out what has been a troubling pattern of demeaning treatment and I would expect appropriate action to be taken," she said.

When pressed on whether she would participate in the upcoming debate being hosted by MSNBC, Clinton was noncommittal: "We've accepted a lot of debates from a lot of different sponsors and, you know, we're gonna wait and see how this plays out."

Also in the media avail, Clinton reiterated her belief that she's the best candidate to take on John McCain, despite recent polls showing Obama performing better in head-to-head match-ups against the Arizona senator. Clinton said she had "been vetted, tested and proven as a winning candidate against tough opposition" and could "go toe to toe with McCain on national security," which she said she was convinced the Republicans would try to use as an issue in November 2008.

She said she was ahead in the popular vote and in delegates and that she was drawing the voters that would be needed to beat McCain -- like women, Latinos and those making less than $50,000 -- and that that she had "every confidence that we will win back the voters that Sen. Obama has been attracting."

Clinton also was asked whether she now saw herself as "the underdog" in the race and saw Obama as the candidate of the establishment. She didn't answer the underdog part of the question directly, but did try to paint Obama as the  "increasingly" establishment candidate. "He has increasingly relied on big endorsements and celebrities to sort of attach himself to to get the kind of validation that comes from that sort of endorsement and he has increasingly, in my view, really tailored his positions so that they are more establishment-oriented, like giving up on universal health care. So I think there is an argument to be made there that if we want a Democrat to be the Democratic standard bearer who stands for the positive, progressive agenda of the Democratic Party as opposed to more of the same or a little less than more of the same then I think I'm the best candidate to carry that message," she said.

When asked whether she could envision a scenario where she manages to win enough delegates to avoid the superdelegates becoming a factor, Clinton said anything was possible and appeared to add Wisconsin to the mix of states in which she would be competitive. (Her campaign has consistently spoken of the March contests as the ones she's in the best position to win. Wisconsin is a state the Obama campaign believes it will win, according to a leaked campaign strategy memo.)

"Anything can happen in a campaign. You all covered me in New Hampshire; you know anything can happen in a campaign. So I feel very good about what we're preparing to do with these upcoming contests and then particularly, you know, on to  Wisconsin, Ohio, Texas and Pennsylvania. This is a contested primary and it's bringing a lot of interest to the Democratic Party. I think that's all to the good and I anticipate that we will be, you know, really criss-crossing the country comparing and contrasting our records."

*** UPDATE *** On the issue of superdelegates, Obama spokesman Bill Burton emails First Read: "[Clinton] is misrepresenting Obama’s position on superdelegates –- it’s his view that the superdelegates as a whole will follow the choice of voters and support whoever wins the pledged delegates nationwide."

And Burton provides this statement from Obama yesterday: "So I think the question is, for those who are not yet committed, the super delegates that are still out there trying to make up their minds, my strong belief is that if we end up with the most states and the most pledged delegates, and the most voters in the country, then it would be problematic for political insiders to overturn the judgment of the voters… My central point is, at the end of the day, each state is allocating a certain portion of delegates and if we've got the most delegates… then I believe I should be the nominee."

Another Drama of the Day from the Klinton Klan. MI and FL will be heard Hillary, when a fair and reasonable campaign and vote can be made by all the candidates and voters in each of those states. Until then, you are just a cheater!!
Dran Krotts.  Clintons are no way near KKK.  You have got to be out of your freakin mind or a member of the KKK or neo nazis.
I'm not suprised to see three pro-hillary type articles on the front page with a three page story about Obama's drug use the same day that Shuster had to apologize to hillary for comments he made. "We're sorry Hillary. Please have all this free press and we'll even start talking about Obama doing drugs again to boot!"
Why shouldn't MI and FL have a vote? Florida gave the last election to Bush they should have an opportunity to make up for it in this election.
I'am a Florida voter, it was a fair and legal election. Yes ,I "demand, yes "demand" that my vote be registered and the appropriate amount of delegets be divived and seated at the Democratic convention. I and all voters of Florida will settle for nothing less.
When has HILLARY Clinton ever won an election against "tough" opposition?
now I know why the right wing hates the Clinton's so damn much.
There is only one type of voice that queen Hillary demands to be heard--people who support the Clinton's. Otherwise, there is an endless barrage of spin and accusation. Do we really want 4 more years of this?
Hillary did not cheat and was the only democrat left in the race who can say that.  Obama aired commercials there.  Clinton never campaigned in either state as all candidates agreed.  She was the only one left on the ballot in MI, so that seems to require a new vote.  But she did nothing wrong there.  In FL, all were still on the ballot, so the vote should hold and the results should lead to those delegates being apportioned and seated at the convention.

Clinton haters really make Obama's movement questionable...he is supposed to be above it all and yet you supporting him are haters and the same as those republicans who gave us 8 years of Bush.

Wonder why all the republicans keep saying they want Hillary as the nominee?  It is because they are afraid you will really send her as the nominee unless they poison her chances...wake up and let's win the WH with HRC.
Hillary doesn't want to play by the rules.

Everyone signed a pledge saying these delegates would not count. In Michigan only her name and Kucinich's appeared on the ballot - plus uncommitted. In Florida and Michigan no one campaigned. Everyone has seen that where Obama campaigns in person he "grows" support. This just shows the lengths the Clintons will go to to try and win. Same old, same old. Really disgusting.
"And later: "We have always looked to a mixed system and it's been the way we've done it for as long as I can remember...'"

She can't remember back before 1984?  Because that's how long super delegates have been around.
You had your chance to let them be heard, Hillary, and moved to block them. Oh wait - they voted for you? Let them be heard now, huh?
didn't Hillary break the rules by campaigning in Florida when she signed on for the "no campaigning" part?

more proof, Hillary.

I'd shut up if I were you, lest I open many Pandora's Boxes...

oh!  and p.s., tell your advisors to keep their mouths shut too, lest they open your treasure trove of "bad stuff".
HRC is utterly devoid of integrity. I'm a left.... far... left wing democrat.. and I would vote for McCain before voting for her.
I can't believe Clinton wants the Florida and Michigan votes counted as is. How can you trust the results of elections every knew wouldn't count? Does this seem honest to ANYONE? Or are Clinton supporters equally "do anything to get elected?"
florida and michigan will be heard and florida AGAIN will play a pivotal role in the pres. election....florida may be the one state that hillary would need to put her over the 2105 delegate count so obama should tread lightly and maybe even make an unscheduled appearance there if he knows what's good for him
And Chuck...now the left is starting to hate her....for good reasons too.
This is the height of hypocrisy. If FLA and MI delegates are seated, without a caucus, it will be the evolution of a true third party. I will never believe in the Democratic Party again.
Rules are rules are rules.
Hillary seems to be getting most of the front page action, so who is the "candidate of the establishment"?
Obama's pushing to unite all Americans, Hillary's actions of late seem to be dividing Americans
Ross:

Did you read this one?  MSNBC tried to refute the points Hillary Clinton makes!  The very first sentence implies that Clinton campaigned in Michigan and Florida and no one else did--which isn't true.

MSNBC does give Clinton plenty of press, but most of it has a negative spin to it.  I don't know if that's exactly compensation.
I was not a Clinton hater before she started attacking Obama with lies and trying to cheat in this election....but I am going in that direction now.
The Clintons wants to play both side of the court.  She is correct when she said she has 35 years of experience, she is an expert in crying, cheating, deamining others, abusing power and lying. We don't need another Clinton in the White House bringing the same type of behavior and continued to divide the country.  Enough is enough, Obama brings new ideas and already demonstrated that he could unite the country. Obama is the best candidate so far.
Cheater?  How is that?  Those voters wanted to be heard, and she won fair and square.  If I lived in one of those states, I would feel cheated.  Just because your candidate didn't win, you call foul.  That isn't cool.
I'm all for including Florida and Michigan in the final tally of delegates at the convention -- provided that each state establishes a legitimate opportunity for the voters to be heard: caucus or primary.

Having said that, I need to ask again -- and I will continue to ask:  WHERE ARE THE TAX RETURNS, BILL AND HILLARY?

If you don't have anything to hide, then release them for public scrutiny.  Anything less than complete transparency is unacceptable.

I also find interesting that Bill states he will not be a full time employee of the White House or serve as Secretary of State, Defense, or Treasury.

Will Bill be any kind of employee in the White House should the Clintons win the nomination and the general election?  Will they (Bill and Hillary) appoint Bill as Ambassador to the United Nations?

If they want us to consider them as viable candidates for the office again, then they should reveal their true intentions.
Won't the American voters please put an end to the Hillary and Bill nightmare.  What a disgrace these two are.  Every day a different Clinton drama or soap opera spectacle.  What a joke these two are.  Looking forward to voting for Senator Obama on Tuesday.  With luck, the Clinton nightmare will soon end.
The Clintons wants to play both side of the court.  She is correct when she said she has 35 years of experience, she is an expert in crying, cheating, deamining others, abusing power and lying. Hillary, IS the only CAPABLE CANDIDATE who can clean up the REPUBLICAN MESS - a RECESSION AND THEN A BIG DEPRESSION.  THANKS BUSH!  WE CAN'T AFFORD A REPUBLICAN, THEY HAVE OUTSTRIPPED OUR COUNTRY AND DEVALUED OUR $1 TO 0.0001 - BASICALLY WORTHLESS.
If rules are rules...superdelegates must be seated in the way they wish.  Obama can't get his way for both.  It must be nice to be Barack Obama...run your campaign on issues you weren't even in Washington.  Get over yourself and run a campaign after you actually do something!  Watch Barack and Hillary speak....the only time Hillary has to look down is when she is trying to be motivational and the only time Barack looks down is when he is speaking about issues.  Id rather my president know the issues than some motivational speech.
I agree with the majority of the sentiment here.  The rules for Michigan and Florida were set early on and when Hilliary and Bill got slammed in South Carolina and they realized the early votes in Florida were for her, the Clinton campaign started to talk about Floridians being heard. Then, she had the guts to fly to Florida and claim victory in a state that doesn't count.  And the media is so enthralled by the Clintons they actually covered her speech.  Let's get real Clinton supporters.......do you all embrace lies as much as the Clintons?  Is they why you support them?
I'm from Michigan and proud of this state.I feel that if our delegates for the democrats are not allowed then my vote as anyone elses is not important. I also think those who pulled out of the primary made a mistake and should live with it.I voted uncommited because I felt it was the only fair vote.
Hey, you cannot police the Democratic National Committee. And to say this at the last minute is totally ridiculous. You are hugely ambitious and only want what you want, not what the American people want. If you have thought that Florida and Michigan should not have been penalized, then you should have voiced that LONG before today. Otherwise, you are desperately seeking things to go your way.
Hillary did not cheat and was the only democrat left in the race who can say that.  Obama aired commercials there.  Clinton never campaigned in either state as all candidates agreed.  She was the only one left on the ballot in MI, so that seems to require a new vote.  But she did nothing wrong there.

STOP LYING.  #1 -Obama had approval of DNC of any FL ads run - check it out  #2- On Super Tuesday, THOUSANDS of FL voters thought the primary HAD NOT HAPPENED.  FL DNC in South Florida bought by HILLARY - check out SEN NELSON spouting same stuff.  FLORIDA DNC DID NOT HAVE APPROVAL OF LOCAL VOTERS TO MOVE PRIMARY.   and #3 -
HILLARY DID TOO CAMPAIGN IN SOUTH FLORIDA - "PRIVATE FUNDRAISERS" HIGHLY COVERED BY THE LOCAL MEDIA - NBC6 - FOR OVER 48 HOURS IN EVERY NEWS CYCLE - morning noon and twice in the evening.  HER VICTORY SPEECH MADE HER WAS ROUNDLY CRITICIZED IN THE PRESS.

SO STOP LYING ABOUT HILLARY FOLLOWING THE RULES - SHE CAMPAIGNED QUITE A BIT IN SOUTH FLORDIA.
but then a loser will do just about anything...
"HRC in MD" should note... the Hillary haters are conservative Republicans.  Obama's criticisms of Mrs-Clinton have arisen from the negative campaigning put forth by the Billary machine.
If Obama had it his way we'd all be rallying for a guy with no education experience, no foreign policy experience, a man who has practically ran on his two years of work in the Senate... And yet, he's saying "I should get all the Superdelegates of the States I won"... Okay fine... But every superdelegate in the states of Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, Michigan, New York, Mass. (Kennedy, Kerry, and Patrick), Tennessee, California, Arizona and New Mexico, Arkansas should all go to Hillary Clinton to play it fair...

Of course this is where the Obama supporters say that this isn't fair because it's treating him unfairly or whatever reason they come up with from their butts....
Hmm...

A candidate that doesn't follow the guidlines of regulatory bodies and fosters skewed interpretations of laws and agreements only as they benefit HER?

Don't we ALREADY HAVE a president like that???
OMG. Hillary, you don't get the delegates from a place you and the others agreed no one would campaign in. Of course you broke that promise and showed up to give a speech, while no one else is even on the ballot. Clinton makes me sick if she thinks this is how to win elections. "Ooh ooh the race is tomorrow guys . . . Well no one showed up today, I win by default." Laura Bush 2012!
Bubba - it wasn't a fair and legal election, because it wasn't an election at all. It was a party event.

The nominating party gets to set its rules. For presidential elections, that nominating party is the national level Democratic Party. The national party can dictate to the state parties their respective roles. The Florida state party bucked that authority, and were penalized - and not without warning.

That's simply the way it works. People within an organization can't demand the organization adopt their proposed rules. They can suggest changes, and they can vote with their feet if the larger organization doesn't accept those suggestions.

Actually the older I get, the less democratic I find myself becomming. By democratic, I'm not making a party reference. Look at the nominees both parties have selected since we've gotten away from the smoke-filled back rooms. I'm not suggesting it, but I wouldn't offer immediate opposition to anyone offering the idea the major parties go back to just picking their nominees among a relatively small group of party leaders.

I also continue to gain respect for the wisdom of the Founding Fathers, who knew their had to be processes in place for the people to voice their opinions and even, in extreme situations, to exercise control. But likewise they also favored processes that avoided the results of all decisions being made by the people at large, no matter informed or uninformed those people might be.
When I had the privilege of serving in the United States Senate as a Democratic Floor aide, there was one uncontested principle by which all members of the Senate were governed:  YOUR WORD IS YOUR BOND.

Hillary and Bill signed the same pledge and agreement with regard to the primary contests in Michigan and Florida as all other Democratic contenders for the nomination.

Can we trust Hillary and Bill on any matter that is brought before us in the conduct of this nomination cycle?
Trying to win the nomination by seating delegates from uncontested primaries is deplorable. She signed the pledge stating that FL and MI primaries shouldn't count. Now, when shes might lose she wants to break her pledge. If she steals the nomination this way, many millions of people will not vote for her under any circumstance
Hillary clinton "YOU" are a liar, cheater, and deceiver and I hate you with all that dwells in me. You are wrong!! YOu agreed not to campaign in FL and MI, but as soon as you saw that you won you want to change your tune. You should be automatically pulled out of this election. You see the obama serge and you cant stand it. Your campaign is the real fairy tale!! movement what movement. the only movement that you will have is a bowel movement. you disgust me.
HILLARY ROCKS ! ROCK ON HILLARY ! hillaryclinton.com
We in Florida aren't blind.  We watch debates and see the candidates campaign. We can read the paper. The only ads on TV were Obamas.  He dropped in for a big dollar fund raiser too.  All I see on the news day after day is TV campaigning for Obama.  They are trying to give him recognition that it took Hillary & McCain years of Public Service and sacrifice to get.  For the love of God, if he wants the recognition please let him put in the time and effort to earn it and let us see the other candidates that are deserving too.
I agree Lucinda... If Obama is up in pleged delegaets and the superdelegates throw the nomination to her,  the party will be done.
It's funny because I hear CLinton supporters describe the hatred directed toward her from Obama supporters, but they are just upset she wants the FL & MI delegates counted now and she is using words now like she is the candidate of hope, change and calling it a movement now!
Also, with Shusters illadvised comment MSNBC is kissing her ass now, even though the definition of Pimp" is to use, often dishonorbly, to your benefit.
Which is exactly what she is doing with Chelsea! She is using a sucessful, private young woman to call superdelegates and campaign for her, ytet NEVER makes her acceessible to the medai! She wants to make all the rules and bend ones that are inconvienient!
Those state were not contested, but poeple took out their time to vote. it caused some of this people money and time to do this, so it should count. no candidate campained there, but people count it neccesary and they voted fulfilled the civil duty. You guys at MSNBC only look at it from Hillarys view (we know you don't like her), you never look at it from the people that took all the pain to vote. because Obama did not win it, and you want him to win the nomination, people of FL. and MI can go to hell right?. you are so bias and so unprofessional. As for your comment on chelsea Clinton, I was not surprice. you MSNBC guys has said a lot of unexpeted things about the Clintons that are just out of line. You like Obama now because it is primary, I hope you will still back him against McCain in the general election if he win the normination. Whatever you do, leave Clinton alone and present the fact. I am not Clintons suppoter, I just think you guys are very unfair, even keith that I like so much has joined the direction of unbalance reporting. this got to stop.
Ross. MSNBC pro Hillary? I can only assume you watch very little of the Chris Matthew's, Tim Russert, Tucker Carlson, or Morning Joe, shows, where Sanator Clinton is bashed daily. Matthew's has bashed the Clinton family relentlessly for at least the past 20 years, and recently was forced to issue an apology which he did (even if insincerely) At least with Fox News we know what to expect, they make no pretense about being a conservative mouth piece. I would have no problem if Obama wins the general election, I think he would do a wonderful job. How about you Ross, would you like to see Obama win the general election? Or are you just another conservative trying to devide the democratic party.
Bubba, write and phone the DNC to voice your frustration. It is only that the DNC and the state party screwed thigns up, yet Hillary never voiced your grievance until things turned Oama's way. Don't trust what she says.
Also, the fact that MSNBC is reposting the Obama drug isse (of course, I assume Hillary and all the other candidates have used drugs, even Bush and Kerry) and some nice articles on Hillary is way too much to dispove the notion that MSNBC is biased toward Hillary. Only crybabies will thnk so, but the reporting on Obama's drug use at the last minute is clearly a bias. The media is biased toward all candidates, not just one of them. Journalists, go back to school and learn codes of ethics.
Hillary didn't campaign here, after the election was over she thank the voters.  There were no ads like Obama was allowed to run.
what does HRC mean that Michigan had a record breaking voter turnout?? I live in Michigan and there were very few people who bothered to vote at all! all of the polling places were empty and lineless. This was widely reported in the media, so I have no idea where she got "record breaking voting" from. she's just getting more desperate as her slim lead is chipped away at by Obama.
Obama wants a re-do.. he's the ONLY candidate who advertized in Florida, and he still lost big.

NO CAUCUS!
I LIVE IN MICHIGAN.I DO NOT REMEMBER HILLARY SAYING ANYTHING ABOUT THE DELEGATES IN MI AND FL WHEN THE DNC STRIPPED THEM.IF SHE CARED ABOUT THE VOTERS OF THOSE STATES SHE SHOULD HAVE URGED THOSE STATES NOT TO MOVE UP THERE ELECTIONS!IT JUST SEEMS PHONY TO ME TO CARE AFTER THE FACT!
