Clinton campaign manager steps aside

Posted: Sunday, February 10, 2008 4:07 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Chuck Todd and NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
Patti Solis Doyle has stepped aside as Clinton campaign manager. Maggie Williams assumes the role of campaign manager. Dole remains as a senior adviser.

"Patti Solis Doyle has done an extraordinary job in getting us to this point -- within reach of the nomination," Hillary Clinton said in a statement released by her campaign, "and I am enormously grateful for her friendship and her outstanding work. And, as Patti has said, this already has been the longest presidential campaign in history and one that has required enormous sacrifices of everyone and our families. I look forward to her continued advice in the months ahead. Patti and I have worked with Maggie Williams for more than a decade. I am lucky to have Maggie on board, and I know she will lead our campaign with great skill towards the nomination."

Williams served as Hillary Clinton's chief of staff in the White House.

Speculation there could be a shakeup in the campaign began weeks ago and hit a peak just before the New Hampshire primary. Recent reports that Solis Doyle overspent in Iowa -- helping put the campaign in a precarious financial position that required a $5 million loan from the New York senator -- added to the speculation among the chattering class that a change was coming.

Doyle sent the following letter to campaign staff this afternon:

Over a year ago Hillary launched her campaign for President.

Her announcement began a historic effort that has inspired millions and brought hundreds of thousands to their feet all across this nation.

I have been proud to manage this campaign, and prouder still to call Hillary my friend for more than sixteen years.  I know that she will make a great President.

This has already been the longest Presidential campaign in the history of our nation, and one that has required enormous sacrifices from all of us and our families.

During the last month I have been working closely with my longtime friend, Maggie Williams.

This week Maggie will begin to assume the duties of campaign manager.  I will serve as a senior adviser to Hillary and the campaign and travel with Hillary from time to time on the road.  Maggie is a remarkable person and I am confident that she will do a fabulous job.

Although I will continue to see you all at headquarters, I would be remiss if I didn’t thank each of you for your dedication, excellence, and passion over the last year.

You are the best campaign staff in the history of Presidential politics and I am grateful to each of you for your hard work and friendship.

why i9s it that the Clinton's campaiogn keeps changing?  Management changes, a new campaign slogan every week or after everu primary when they research everything, running out of money, Bill's role changes every week, in every market.  Chelsea can't talk to the press, Chelsea can talk to the press.  No cqaucasing in casino's in NV. Yes caucausing in casino's.  Michigan and florida count, michigan and Florida do not count.  Seems Obama has tgotten it right on day one as his campaign has stayed on the same steady course.  Seems Hillary was not ready on day one with her campaign.  Doesn't bode well for being ready on day one in the oval office???
Sign of desperation? Well, hire Rove or Libby.
This is really major. PSD has been rumored to be in the doghouse since Iowa but hung in there. She is very close to HRC.
Hillary,
Please, for the sake of your Party, please step aside and let Barack lead us to victory. Don't let your ambition destroy the Party.
Did she endorse Obama?
I hope she fires her self soon i.e. Hillary. We need her to step down: she is living up to her divisive creed.
Staff turnover is usually not a good sign -- but the most important data points this week are the six consecutive national polls showing Obama as the strongest candidate against McCain.  If the person who wins the most support in primaries and caucuses is the same person who polls strongest for November, the superdelegates should help that candidate win.

Ah... the sweet smell of coffee burning and the solitary desperation of a campaign on the rocks...

Aging boomer couple overboard...

Anchors aweigh!

If you're interested in making a decision based on how well the candidates have run their campaigns, this has to be considered, along with the Clinton's mismanagement of campaign funds. Oddly enough, for an inexperienced candidate, Obama's campaign doesn't appear to have these starts and stops.

Ready on day one? I think not! Its not enough to be ready on day one, you have to be right on day one! Obama is that man!

OBAMA '08
Could this possibly be realated to Patti Solis Doyle not receiving pay as part of Hill/Bill campaign budget cutting?  Maybe we need to know where the 10 million came from, another personal check maybe?  Be careful you don't support a woman in office, but rather someone who can manage our national budget!
Ms. Clinton is still the best qualified candidate. She rolled into many punches from the Republicans and fellow candidates.  She epitomizes the future, the way women have always taken cared of the family.  USA needs a career-mother who can balance the checkbook. Go Hilary, YOU WILL WIN THE NOMINATION...
The ship is sinking.
Obama and his blind sheep devotees are getting more and more polarizing. And he has yet to be vetted.  Hillary will win with dignity.
This is yet another change in the tactics of the Clinton campaign.  It looks like the "Clintonian" politics of old is no longer working.
The fat lady is singing.
The Bush-Clinton dynasties are the past, and We, the People have had it with those families!

We deserve the government we get. I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again:  America, you need to wake up then wise up to today’s realities.  For the first time ever, young voters are united en masse and working for the election of Barack Obama.  Why?  They see and feel what their past has been under the Bush-Clinton dynasties and, hoping for the brightest of futures, they’re working hard to achieve real change with Barack Obama.

Having taught the nation’s youth here in Colorado for 35 years, I often unfairly viewed our nation’s youth—13-year-olds—as counter culture, lazy, self-centered, and uncaring.  What a remarkable transformation can take place between the ages of 13 and 18!  As a boomer and early supporter of Barack Obama and his vision for America, I’ve witnessed first hand the organization, conviction, and hard work of this block of young voters, and I am proud to be working hard alongside them.

Let’s review, do a little reality check—by no means complete—as to why they’re onboard for Obama in this election cycle. We’re in a war we didn’t need, we have a President who lied to get us there, and Republicans and many Democrats—like Hillary--gave this President a free reign to do whatever he wanted.  Further, this Administration and the Republicans can talk about lowering taxes and federal spending, yet they charged billions and our future on a big fat Chinese charge card.  Ironically, we pay our short term expenses by borrowing from China to pay for Middle East oil and, day by day, our economy sucks worse, and our reputation in the world sucks the worst, while fat-cat corporations and lobbyists benefit.  And what about us, We, the People?   As a boomer, I’m not happy at all, and I’m certainly not looking forward to replacing one liar—George Bush, who’s all but defecated on our Constitution—with two—Hillary and Bill Clinton and a co-presidency.  Young people may not know the full history of the Clintons, but I do.  And if Hillary chose to stand by her man as he messed up the White House with Monica Lewinsky—I guess that’s fine, but I don’t want to re-live that past.  This election IS about the vote on the Iraq war, and it IS about the economy, but it IS also about judgment and character and the past vs. the future and who can best unite and lead this country out of the muck and mire.

Although I would vote for Hillary were she our nominee, there is no need to.  We don’t need to build another bridge to the past, and we don’t need the division anymore—the old math of the 20th century no longer adds up. And we no longer need to hold our noses when we cast our vote. Let’s do the new math of the 21st century. Listen to the youth this time, America.  They have it right.  No longer are they just content to “fight for their right to party;” they are now fired up and in the lead for a new, promising, and brighter future with Barack Obama, and I stand with them.

One of my favorite poets reminds us now more than ever:  “Do not go gentle into that good night, old age should burn and rave at close of day; rage, rage against the dying of the light.”  --Dylan Thomas
My goodness - what hate these Obama folks have. Why do those media guys not catch all the negative stuff Obama's bloggers are putting out.
Hillary - we are with you all the way - You have done great inspite of all this hate these guys are spreading. We need an experienced person to run this country in these difficult times. I will have to vote for McCain if Obama's brainwash continues.
"What goes around comes around," or not playing by the rules can finally catch up with you. For instance, Democratic Party Super delegates suck! This beforehand-rigging of the democratic process is super-demoralizing, and We, the People are NOT going take this lying down. Down with 20th century politics. We're turning the page to the 21st century politics, and We, the People are back!
Three words:

SAD, SAD, SAD.
Major Scapegoat # 1. Stay Tuned. More to come as the primaries continue to pile up in the Obama column.
Obama and his blind sheep devotees are getting more and more polarizing. And he has yet to be vetted.  Hillary will win with dignity.
You can always count on the Hillary haters to flock to their favorite anti female network.  Have fun in the Little Rascals no girls allowed boys club.
clinton is not stupid, she is just taking her campaign a notch higher. she is definitely going to win the nominee, she is waiting for the big states with the most delegates and superdelegates. who cares to much about caucuses. the real people can't even go because they are working. this favors obama's campaign. get it? anyways, with california, new york, jersey and florida.. BIG STATES MOST DELEGATES!!! PEOPLE, we can't have it both ways. She is the one to beat and with the looks of it, it's not going to happen for anyone else.. JUST BEING TRUTHFUL
It's time for the desparate Clinton's to step aside and let the country move ahead.
Another innocent by-stander taking it on the chin for the Clintons incompetence.
Lets see; can't pick a direction,(just do or say whatever he says)  Can't Manage a campaign budget (But can manage the US budget) Can't admit being wrong(Glad she's nothing like BUSH) can't pick the right people to surround her during campaign (BUt will do fine picking cabinet as long as it's all GIRLS) Opens her speech last nite talking about the poor man who's job was shipped overseas (And NAFTA STARTED WHEN oh yeah that was a clinton thing)  Yeah Yeah she's our girl!!!
Mark, quick throw her an anchor!
Another, oops. Just cann't get it right. Lets look forward and not be scared of the past.
It's OK Hillary, You still get to be a Senator.
Well else can they do? It seems to late to replace Hillary.

:)

These are his own words from his book, friends and family. He was right when he said that no politician is clean. He is just as dirty if not more so than the rest. Some new change. He is not an outsider he's in the Senate. Why did he go along with supporting the war once he had the power to vote against it? What a hypocrite. I feel sorry for those who were taken in by him.

He has taken the great words of JFK and MLK and used them for his own. What a fraud. Yes the U.S. desperately wants change. They want change from George W Bush and it doesn't matter who it is. Obama wants you to believe in the words that he says but it's not what he believes in his heart.
The issue of the superdelegates is an important one.  If Obama wins the popular vote and the super delegates give the nomination to Hillary, I, for one, will vote for McCain.  As a voting Democrat of 47 years, I would be totally disgusted with my party if this should occur.
For the sake of our country and  world, don't let a war mongoring McCain, or a - run our personal lives, Huckabee get the Whitehouse. All Republicans, many independents and a good deal of Democrats will not vote for Hillary (and Bill).  Obama would be a great change!
Not only is Hillary's campaign falling apart, but yesterday she had the audacity to practically shout, "Yes, we can!", again, trying to steal Obama's fire, something she can never do.  In the Senate, she always voted after him even though her name was called first.  Can we please stop pretending she is this genius prodigy now?  She is a sheltered Republican reared nerd who has chameleon like ability to constantly remake herself and then revise her own history.  Trouble is, we just went through 8 years of a president like that, and we don't buy that style anymore.  Hillary, please step aside and let Obama bring the enlightenment back to our country.  Obama was trained as a community organizer, and it shows.  His campaign's foundation is built on solid rock.  Hers, on used sand.
Take responsibility Hillary were you not ready for this campaign on day one. So easy to blame your staff for your inability to make the right decisions on day one, and you want us to trust you to run the country.
Let's all HOPE she will CHANGE her decision and do what is right for the good of the democratic party

OBAMA '08
This is a sure sign she is SCARED and her coronation is NOT going as well as the plan she laid out!

Nonetheless, it's a SMART move for traction.

Like her life-time of hard work when Hillary sees that something isn't working she finds what will and corrects it...why that is wrong I will never understand...wish G.W. Bush would have done the same! I, too, will vote Hillary even if I have to write her name in!
Rest assured Obama supporters.  The Clinton campaign is not disappearing anytime soon.  This is possibly a build up for some sceme or event.  The Clintons may be about to "go negative" again.  Be prepared.  If you would like to make your voice heard make another campaign contribution at Sen. Obama's website.

Go Obama!
It amazes me when I read the blogs under HillaryClinton.com and the blogs under BarackObama.com. The people who write on behalf and for Sen. Barack Hussein Obama are so angry and full of hate. It's quit scary actually. When I read what the people write in Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's blogs, it is so peaceful, educated, inspiring and hopeful. I know that when people get worried and scared, they will result to anger and senseless frustration; hence, all the exaggerated pro-Barack Hussein Obama comments. God bless America.
This is not a good sign for Hillary.  You notice that Obama's team has done well, managed their money well, not had anyone they had the shut up (Bill, keep winning primary states; I think this shows a better management style for Obama.
People make campaign changes when necessary.  I see this as a positive for the Senator's campaign, not because PSD didn't do well, but because you need to inject new energy and ideas to push you over the finish line.  Status quo may not cut it.  This is a smart move.
Can anyone else hear taps playing?
Not only cant the public trust hillary apparently her own staff cant trust her. Notice how they announced this on a Sunday afternoon during a slow news cycle? Shame, shame.
Is Clinton now spreading "False Hope", she sounds more like Obama everyday and she said he was spreading "False Hope". Maybe with this new manager she can find her own message and not have to borrow Obama's. She said she found her voice, but all I have heard is her sounding more and more like Obama
Wow, talk about too little too late.  There's nothing Hillary can do.  She cancelled one of the 2 remaining debates, and then said she would only show up to the other one if Fox News was in charge of it.  She's got Rush Limbaugh and Laura Ingraham out raising money for her, and she's accepted the endorsement of Ann Coulter.  Say what you will, but this woman becomes a mess when she loses.
Clintons are decievers, but please power on hillary, republicans love you anyway. Not
To all you Hillary haters and msnbc I just have to say a few words... SUCK IT, SUCK IT HARD!!!
For the love of our party - PLEASE WITHDRAW FROM THE RACE HILLIARY. This circus has gone on long enough and we DESERVE better.

Go Obama
How can Hillary manage our government, when she cannot employ the right people to manage her campaign. To be President, you don't have to know how to do everthing yourself; but you surely need to know someone who does.Hillary can't seem to be able to hire the quality and excellent staff that Obama has.I truly believe Hillary uses people, and she has this sense of "Entitlement". She was already in the White House for eight years, now she and Bill wants eight more? Greed, Vanity, Selfish, and of course DIVISIVE!!!!
