Huckabee contests WA results

From NBC/NJ's Matthew Berger
RICHMOND, Va. -- The Huckabee campaign is contesting the results of the Washington caucus, claiming the state chairman declared McCain the winner before all the votes were counted.

Campaign Chairman Ed Rollins told reporters Sunday that in addition to delegates, the “dubious” announcement hurt Huckabee’s momentum after surprise wins in Kansas and Louisiana Saturday night.

“This is a very serious issue,” Rollins told reporters at a hastily arranged briefing in his hotel room. “Obviously, this is a game about, at this point in time,  about every delegate, every vote should count. And it’s also about perception.”

Rollins said he was not accusing the McCain campaign of anything, but said Washington Republican State Party Chairman Luke Esser suspended voting with only 87 percent of the votes counted, and then issued a press release declaring McCain the victor. When Huckabee campaign officials reached Esser Sunday, he said the rest of the votes would be counted today and refused requests for the campaign to monitor the tallying, Rollins said, adding Esser said the campaign should trust the party.

“At this point of time, I want to make sure that every vote is counted, and I’m not accusing anyone of mischief at this time; I’m accusing someone of bad judgment,” he said.

Attempts to contact Esser Sunday were unsuccessful. Rollins said Esser claimed he did not know where in the state the uncounted votes were from.

The Huckabee campaign said they would pursue legal avenues to have an accurate count of the Washington caucuses. And Rollins said the effort was also a warning shot to other states that might try to declare McCain the victor before an accurate count.

“I think it’s very important that we go on record that we’re gonna go after every single delegate we are entitled to,” he said. “And I think that every chairman in the country should be on notice that this is an improper procedure, and if you’re gonna ask people to vote, you count the votes.”

Rollins added the dubious counting hurt the perception of their wins Saturday.

"There's a big difference in impact between our campaign winning three primaries and caucuses yesterday as we go into one, the way reporting would have been done, as opposed to two wins and one loss, and one loss which we are now certainly questioning," he said.

I'm not a Republican, but I have to admit I was thinking the same thing all day in regards to the math; how can Washington call a 26%-24%-21% race with only 87% of precincts reporting?  Very shady.
I didn't know that they could just suspend a contest. Shame on them. It is one thing to project a winner and very poor taste to not finish the tally.

Not that I care for any of these candidates.

The exact thing happened with the Louisiana caucus when it was clear Ron Paul was winning! The Paul campaign is in the middle of a lawsuit with the LAGOP.
Many wonder why Huckabee continues with limited chance to   win.  Simple.  Influence.  The more support he gathers the more influence he has to press for his agenda.  And if one of his miracles should appear?  So much the better from his perspective but in either case he increases his importance in the party, something McCain can ill afford to disregard.
We must insist on a complete count to ensure all Americans have their vote counted. Countless men and women have suffered to allow all Americans the right to vote.
I agree with Shadow, It sounds like funny math to me too. How can you call a race that close when you don't have all the votes in and there is only a 2% difference between McCain and Huckabee and there are still either 13% or 29% still uncounted depending on your math? I smell dirty politics.
I am a republican and I agree, that each canidate be treated fairly, and I believe that Huckabee, should be the next president with all his honesty.  He has not slung any mud, like all the other canidates has.  He is a Christian with good morales.
Rediculus. Esser should be canned for his undemocratic ethics. Democracy demands my vote be counted regardless if it is 99 to 1 in favor of the other person. Esser, you are a disgrace to the party regardles of who wins, my vote should be counted.
get on with it.
Esser truly is a disgrace to the party, John Doe. I don't care if you are Huckabee, McCain, or even Ron Paul, each vote needs to be counted carefully and if the votes are close at all, there should not be a winner called until all precincts have reported.

This is either unresponsible on the part of Esser or pure blatant support for McCain, either way, it is unacceptable.
Huckabee conspired with McCain in West Virginia to steal the states delegates from Romney. Now, when the tables turn against him he complains. He can't have it both ways.
The Republican party,  is going to crumble if its current leaders do not step up and show some leadership.

To bad, so sad that they didn't get the rich guy they wanted for President and their efforts have hurt the Republican race.

<The American people obviously want to be the ones who choose the President.  That is how our system works and has worked for hundreds of years.>

Against all odds, we are choosing Mike Huckabee to be our President, so stop with the harassment and allow us our choice.

I am a former Marine of 13 years who got out of the military this year.  I thought we were fighting for our freedoms as well as those of other people around the world.  We are OUTRAGED!!!!!!!!

WE PICK GOVERNOR MIKE HUCKABEE OF ARKANSAS.
All the votes must be counted in Washington state.

One more example of the Republican party forcing McCain on us.

Everyone needs to email Mr. Esser and demand that the votes all be counted.

I got this email address off of the Washington State Republican party website- luke@wsrp.org
Calling McCain the winner with such a large percentage of uncounted votes smacks of 'dirty politics' to me.  We send our troops out to far away places to defend the rights of all men and women around the globe.  And then we behave in such a fashion as to cause those we are trying to educate on this style of politics to question why it's preferred to their own.  It's a disgrace, and Mr. Esser should be sacked for such a miserable performance on so important an issue
