Clinton: Taxation with representation

Posted: Monday, February 11, 2008 10:07 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- With one day to go before voters in Maryland, Virginia and the nation's capital hit the polls, Hillary Clinton began the morning with an event billed as "coffee and conversation with DC supporters" at the National Council of Negro Women.

She used the occasion to comment on the possibility of a pause in troop withdrawals from Iraq and to tout her belief city should have full voting rights.

"DC really deserves much more attention and support from the federal government," she said, before going on to talk about all the ways she tried to be involved in the lives of the people here.

"I would like to go even further and have full voting rights for the District of Columbia.  I think this is, as you do, long overdue. It is wrong that we disenfranchise the people who live and work in this city, and it is one of the major planks of my campaign to do everything that I can," the senator said to applause. "I hope I will have the great honor, as president, of signing that into law."

The "conversation" part of the brief event did not take place within earshot of the press, which were hustled out to the bus -- in order to be in place to depart in the motorcade as soon as the senator was ready -- as Clinton chatted with audience members after speaking for about 15 minutes.

The Clinton campaign has largely discounted Tuesday's Chesapeake Primary, arguing rival Barack Obama has advantages in the area that will likely push him to victory, but before today's event began, reporters were given a two-and-a-half page list of members of the senator's "Washington, DC for Hillary Steering Committee."

Clinton hailed the NCNW, calling it "an extraordinary organization" and listing projects in Africa she had visited that the organization supported. She talked about working with Texas Cong. Sheila Jackson Lee -- one of her supporters -- "to finally remedy another injustice and that is to have an African-American woman represented in the capitol Statuary Hall" and thanked the group for helping her to get a congressional gold medal for the NCNW's chair and president emerita Dorothy Height.

The NCNW was founded by the educator and political leader Mary McLeod Bethune in 1935 to represent the interests of women of African descent. Black support has gone overwhelmingly to Obama in recent contests, but the Clinton campaign has consistently said it would not concede the votes of anyone and the senator herself has said she sees people as individuals not as members of a group. The audience at the event was mixed and gave the senator a warm reception.

After about 10 minutes, Clinton went on to the rest of her stump, pointing out -- as she has often since the Los Angeles debate -- the historic nature of her and Obama's candidacies and arguing she is the best choice to lead the country. She said being on stage in LA was like an "out of body" experience and that she and Obama represented the progress the country had made.

She criticized Obama on healthcare, calling it a "defining issue" of this campaign. "It is so disappointing to me that Sen. Obama will not support universal healthcare," she said. "If we don't stand for universal healthcare as Democrats, I don't know what we stand for."

Clinton also mentioned today's news that Defense Secretary Robert Gates has said he could back Gen. David Petraeus' proposal for a pause in the withdrawal of US forces from Iraq this summer due to a shaky security situation there.

"I woke up to the news today that Secretary Gates has said that perhaps we won't be withdrawing as many of our troops from Iraq as originally promised. I can't say I'm surprised, because I don't think this president wants to end the war that he started," she said. "So we've got to be even more committed to withdrawing our troops and making it clear that when I am president we will bring our troops home safely and responsibly."

Clinton ended by talking about her ability to "go toe-to-toe" with presumptive Republican nominee Sen. John McCain and asking people to help get out the vote over the next 24 hours.

"I hope you'll spend whatever time you can today and tomorrow talking to as many people, encouraging them to come out to vote. Asking them to look at what's at stake in this election," she said. "We're going to be successful. We're going to win this nomination and then we're going to go on to victory in November."

She was set to visit a GM plant in Baltimore, hold a rally in Charlottesville, Va., and have an interview with Politico in Rosslyn, Va., today.

*** UPDATE *** The RNC responds this way: “Senator Clinton has no credibility on the issue of Iraq," spokesman Alex Conant writes. "Her position changes depending on her status in the polls -- not our troops’ status in Iraq.”

I guess she wants to be Pander in Chief.  She will stoop to any level.  Please god, give us something different than Clinton or Bush.
its interesting that Mx Clinton talks to all the black churches, schools, etc . cant she get enough white votes to carry her.  too bad Billary, maybe now we can say Chellery also.
Simple solution here.  Arlington, VA was once part of the District of Columbia.  Set up a "National Capital" area from Capitol Hill to the Old Executive Office Building and take in the Mall and adjoining offices.  Split the rest of the present D.C. between Montgomery and Prince George's County, MD.  End of discussion.
Since DC is 98 per cent Democrat, they won't get anything like this from a Republican.
""DC really deserves much more attention and support from the federal government," she said, before going on to talk about all the ways she tried to be involved in the lives of the people here.

________

So... in her 7 years in Washington as a Senator has she once supported this in the Senate?  Has she brought it up?  Has she proposed or supported it in the Senate?

Guess now that she wants those votes she cares about DC.  I guess its lucky for DC that she has to work there, otherwise she probably wouldn't have bothered to show up, just like many of the other states where she didn't expect to win. She only cares to show up and listen to the people, if she thinks she can get their votes.

She didn't bother to fight for the rights and voices of the people of Michigan and Florida last year when they set their date and were stripped of their delegates.  She figured she didn't need them so they weren't worth fighting for.  Only now that she needs them do they matter to her.

She cared about the voices of the Las Vegas strip workers and approved their caucus rules... until they decided to support someone else. Then their voices didn't matter and she wanted them silenced.

She courted South Carolina, till they didn't support her and she high tailed it out of town in the middle of the night, not bothering to thank the people that helped her and voted for her.

Enough of the old Washington ways.  Just say NO to Hillary
Of course it would make to much sense to just give back DC to Maryland for voting and representation...
Well its politics as usual now wahington needs more attention than they were getting from the Federal Government, hmmm must be having a primary there...When are the American people going to wake up your hearing what you have been hearing since you been around...Its just politics at its best you take care of me at election and i will give you your usual doggie bone when i get in.....we need change and now...Independents give the canadates a hard look and go with change not politcs as usual.....We need to unite..........Stand as one voice and change Washington
"...because I don't think this president wants to end the war that he started."  That 'he' started?  Isn't she aware that she also 'started' the war by voting for it?  Unbelievable.  The blood of our soldiers are on her hands and yet she continues to spout her rhetoric.  Sorry, but she is NOT presidential material by any stretch.
I simply cannot understand how Hillary Clinton can pretend to address the concerns of working class Americans while simultaneously refusing to release her income tax reurns.
The "conversation" part of the brief event did not take place within earshot of the press, which were hustled out to the bus -- in order to be in place to depart in the motorcade as soon as the senator was ready -- as Clinton chatted with audience members after speaking for about 15 minutes.

I just have this picture of the Clinton's peole with their cattle prods and bullwhips moving the press into the bus....
In the face of an unstoppable Obama election sweep, Ms. Clinton rush to give the best talk so that her rhetoric will be bought easily by those sharing her phony "concerns" and flock to vote for her. Candidates -- even dictators -- used rhetoric laden with populist themes to motivate and rally voters when circumstances favor their opponents, whether a political opponent or a state foe.
Voters should not allow themselves to be blinded and deafened by the realities of America and the global community of today. A politician who desperately seeks the presidency signals hunger for power, not a commitment to national service. One who bows to majority voters' wishes for change is one who accepts the realities and cease being a roadblock in the way of voters.
If Hillary Clinton wants to be elected president to serve America -- not to fulfill her political ambitions as the first woman president -- then she has to admit all mistakes, let voters know as muh information that has been released as that of her opponents. Running a secretive campaign does no good to America. s. Clinton may be able to win, but only if she is upfront who answers, not sidestep, critical questions to guide voters' decision making process. She also must stop resorting to divisive political tactics that should belong to 20th century politics. No more partisan infighting i Washington. Remember many of the senators and representatives have been in politics longer than Hillary Clinton, yet they failed to use their political experience to end today's politics of hopelessness and poisonous partisanship.
The folks at Merriam-Webster need to read this so they can add it to their definition of "pandering".
I own property outside my voting disrict. I am not allowed to vote there. I have taxation without representation. Does all of the voters in DC pay more in taxes then they get in benfits. I doubt it. Sorry I donot have E-mail now.
not in DC or Maryland Clinton, this is Obama country. Maybe Virginia they are our "special" neighbors.
Hillary,
Get on your broom, and fly, fly, fly away.
Hillary supporters if you want the lowdown on gender bias at MSNBC go to mediamatters.org it goes far beyond Chris Matthews and David Shuster.
Now she's promising to erect statues in the hopes she can steal a few more votes?
Hillary, stop!  Have some dignity!  This is getting embarrassing...
Let's just shake off this amnesia for a moment, shall we? Bill and Hillary Clinton occupied the White House for 8 years -- 1993 to 2001. During that time, FULL REPRESENTATION for Washington, D. C. was on the table, was (and continues to be) a major issue for the residents of the nation's capitol. What did the Clintons do to advance that cause? Absolutely nothing. The Clintons pay lip service but do nothing. After their actions and words in South Carolina, it is now a "vast black wing conspiracy" to vote for Barack Obama. Trust that the Clintons will blame the loss in the Potomac Primary on "too many black voters," just as they blame the losses over the weekend to "too many caucuses and too many black -- eh, make that white -- voters in rich -- er, make that middle-class" states.
If that wasn't classic Hillary Clinton, I don't know what is. She appears before a Womens "Negro" group, reminds them that she got one of their leasders the "Congressional Gold Medal" and supports voting rights for D.C. residence. First she "pimps" out her daughter and is now so desperate that she is pimping out herself.
It takes guts for Hillary to go into D.C. and talk straight up with the voters.
She's done this all throughout the campaign whereas Obama hasn't.
He rarely if ever takes questions from a crowd he speaks to, and doesn't go one one one with his supporters at all.
That's why so many flock to his ralleys, because they can't get up close to him. His handlers want him to have that elusive aura about him.
Unlike Hillary, who speaks with her supporters (not to or at them) and who takes every opportunity available to try and get to know the people she represents, and the people who's votes she is seeking.
Obama is running a campaign too much like Ahhhhhhnald's in CALEE-FORRR-NEEE-AHHHH during the re-cal election of 2003, to suit my tastes.
Too much entertainment, glitter and glitz.....not enough substance. Too much "rock-star" not enough realism, and down to earth representation of of The People.
Remember the old story about the emporer's new clothes, when everyone was afraid to say that the emporer was bare-assed naked?
Well, this time it isn't a political figure who's "naked."
But rather, it is the supporters of that political figure who are being conned into believing their new suit of clothes is beautiful.
When in fact, they are butt naked because they haven't been given any "new clothing" by Obama at all.
A lot of them know it and are afraid to admit it. Others have been totally blinded by the free rock concerts, and entertainment that coincide with Obama rallys.
Unfortunately, after all the kiddie-parties are over, the winner of this primary has to take on the G.O.P.'s candidate in November.
We need to do the right thing and nominate Hillary Clinton.
Obama is not electable, in spite of the bill of goods we're being sold.
I hope that there are more mature adults in Texas, Ohio, and Pennsylvania than there are in Whacko-Washington State. We can't afford to have Obama as our party's candidate.
Whoever becomes President is going to affect the lives of all of us. Leading this country isn't like hosting a kiddie-birthday-party in a sports arena. It's serious business for the people of this country.
Obama hasn't convinced me he understands that.

HILLARY FOR PRESIDENT 2008!
Productive change that benefits everyone is good. Change, just for the sake of change, is folly.

America is not ready for a woman president. Hillary will be judged a lot because she's the first one to step out...Hopefully it will be easier for the next women who step up and try to become the president.
Everyone wants to point the finger at Clinton for voting for the ability to go to war given the proper justification.  The experts including Colin Powell gave the American people the justification. It was not until later that this justification turned out to be false and proven to have been manipulated by the Republicans. To not give the neccessary approval to go to war and if it was discovered that the evidence was true, would have left us vulnerable. Like sitting ducks. If you can not trust your military expertise, the FBI or your President, than who? The American people as a whole is responsible for this war and for electing a President and Administration that deals in criminal lie's and the falsification of information. If you voted for this President, than you and all like you are the ones to blame for this war and not the Clinton's. Apply this hate and finger pointing to yourselves. Grow up and move on to the solution which is in my opinion. Hillary Clinton for President.
Such simple minded people. Our lives were better when Bill was in office. I believe Hillary would do better than him. Obama will not win against the GOP. You fool yourself. I have voted dem. for 36 years, and I will not vote for Obama, anyone but him. He is a preacher not a experience leader of the free world.
The taxation without representation point is valid. But instead of making this city its own state, why don't we just exempt D.C. residents from paying federal income tax?

This would help revitalize the city, by providing an incentive for some to move out of the suburbs back into town. And it has precedent. Other U.S. territories don't pay income taxes.
You know, it doesn't take a President to push for full DC voting rights. Senators have plenty of sway on issues like this, and can push to get them signed into law. So, go for it, Hillary! You don't need to be President to deliver on most of the promises you're making.
Question, Given Obama's beliefs, his voting record, experience or lack of, would African American's still vote for him, if he were white and his name was Bernie Berstein. I think not. I am African American and I ask many like me this question and most have honestly said no. Many feel this is our chance to get back at racism in America. But I wonder how we can achieve this, when by doing so, we exhibit racism ourselves. Our memory is short. How can we as a people forget all the Clinton's have done for the poor and working class of America. If you can not get racism out of your soul and your own houses than how can you remove it from society?
J. Merle,
It takes "guts" to pander?  Are you insane?
There is an inexplicable Obama Tsunami that has swept the nation. It will be all but impossible for any mortals to attempt to stop it.
Perhaps it will be better to have a candidate who saw through the whole scam and voted no on invading Iraq, rather than one that will be crucified as a flip-flopper.
On that issue alone... I will switch from Clinton to Obama.
You should have known better than to just "go with the flow..." on the Iraq vote, Mrs. Clinton. Bad judgment.
Hillary is, as the saying goes, "a day late and a dollar short".  Obama expressed his support for DC voting rights a long time ago.  The people of DC aren't looking for 11th hour appeals.
"...its interesting that Mx Clinton talks to all the black churches, schools, etc . cant she get enough white votes to carry her.  too bad Billary, maybe now we can say Chellery also. ..."
betty LHC Az (Sent Monday, February 11, 2008 10:28 AM)

So what do we get with Obama and HIS wife?..."Bar-Chelle," or maybe "Mich-Rack?"?
I don't recall Chelsea being part of the Clinton Campaign when she was a little girl. Why are the Obama kids always mentioned by or pictured with their mother and father on the campaign trail?
Oh by the way, Michelle Obama said..."first they said he was too black, then they said he isn't black enough"...about her husband on Saturday, February 2, 2008, on C-Span. I thought we weren't supposed to be talking about race. I thought we weren't supposed to race bait?
I find those statements to be derogatory and demeaning towards both blacks and whites.
She needs to keep her mouth shut too.
So tired of Billary.

Go Obama!
It was the same over the weekend.

PANDERING

These two turds (Hillary and Obama) were up here in Maine talking about sawmills and how terrible it was that some swamills have closed down.  3 things wrong with this:

1)  Neither of them could identify a sawmill from 100 feet away

2)  Neither of them cared one whit when the mills were going down (not that they should) but now that they want votes, here they are, in Maine, for the first time in forever, talking about this horrible tragedy.

3)  Their only proposed solution to keep future mills from shutting down, as near as I can tell, is to reduce taxes on the workers and increase taxes on the mills.

Yeah, that'll keep those mills up and operating.
Obama keeps saying he said no to the war. Well, he didn't have a vote because he wasn't in office. If he had a vote it would have been a tough decision, would he have voted present or stepped up and voted? We will never know, but when you add WMD's to the mix it's gives you pause. It's so much eaiser when you look in the box than being in it.
You all should go to youtube story about Obama using crack and getting a BJ from a gay male in 1989. Whats up with that? Why don't we hear the truth about this story?
Romney used his own money to help with his campaign, Clinton "loans" her campaign approximately 5 million, just another way of using the system which the Clintons' are soooo good at.  With 35 years of experience and involvement, why now is she suggesting giving DC the right to vote? Walk the walk and talk the talk.
J Merle:
Well said. Actually, how the heck can Obama answer thousands of people's questions in such a short time, while Hillary is usually rallying around smaller crowds. And you need evidence to back up your claim of Obama's evusiveness. Just watching him speak and nobody approaching to ask questions is only something a foolish, ignorant voter will try to back up that claim. And if Obama was avoiding questions, he'd be avoiding so many voters. Remember he was taken aback in Idaho when around 14,000 people showed up. Usually people don't have questions to ask -- and Obama does not have to answer -- when he has given speeches to large crowds and much of what you might ask is on the candidates' websites.
Compare that to Hillary. She refuses to be truthful by not releasing what voters want to know: her tax retuns. This is unimportant for me personally, but it should aid voters in making a decision about which president would make a great budget handler. There are a lot of other important questions the Clintons continue to sidestep. That tells us how evasive they have become as much as Bush.
"...Such simple minded people. Our lives were better when Bill was in office. I believe Hillary would do better than him. Obama will not win against the GOP. You fool yourself. I have voted dem. for 36 years, and I will not vote for Obama, anyone but him. He is a preacher not a experience leader of the free world...."
L, TN (Sent Monday, February 11, 2008 11:37 AM)

Another prime example of someone who will join me in crossing the aisle if Obama is the Democratic nominee.
Obama cannot, and will not win in November.
Face it, learn it, live it.....or nominate him and learn the hard way on November 4th.

If I'm not mistaken, Obama hasn't done anything to get D.C. a vote. You Obamaites need to wake up and smell the coffee. You keep saying, why hasn't she done this, why hasn't she done that. What I keep saying is what, if anything, has Obama done? As far as I can tell nothing of any signifcance. Oh, I guess if a lobbyist buys you dinner you have to stand up to eat it. I forgot that one. HA. What a joke. Why do you think this guy is going to do anything more as president? He could one day, but he is just flat out naive as the proverbial hick that fell off the turnip truck. Unite republicans and democrats. That's a laugh. It ain't a gonna happen. They have totally different belief systems. The way it works is we just take turns with who's at the wheel. People's basic belief systems CANNOT be neutralized. I am pro life. I will always be pro life. Obama can't talk me out of that. I am against capital punishment. I am for school choice. I am for gun control. Republicans can't change that. This unity stuff and yes we can stuff is nothing but a t.v. commercial. It is a FAIRY TALE. Bill, although inappropriate, was right.
J Merle Im wondering what you mean by change, change  just for the sake of change is folly. Is it folly for the all these years we have been watching government take our money and just do what they want through wastefullness, big spending, lobbysist, theft by politicicians, pork barrell spending, unacountably spending of billions in Irag, Katrina and other countries.
This hasn!t happened overnight its been going on for years and the same parties, sometime new faces are all part of this folly...Either we get change now or Amrican keeps getting flushed down the toilet by your folly.....Change and change now.....
why doesn't anyone push the clintons on what they have to hide - why won't they release their tax returns and foundation contributors' lists? what are they afraid of?  don't they know the republicans will make this an issue if she wins the nomination? and if they wait till after the nomination to release their tax returns - is it because they don't want the obama campaign to know something that can be used against her and that will be displeasing to the democrats?
I cannot vote for Clinton.  I  cannot vote for McCain.  When will America realize that these lying politicians only want the office for their own glorification?  We have Truth in Lending and other laws to protect us, why not a Truth in Politics law?
Oh, I forgot - the politicians pass laws.
Hillary Clinton for PRESIDENT and Barak Obama for VICE PRESIDENT!!!

If you voted for Bush then accept responsibility for the war in Iraq! We are in an UNJUSTIFIED war because of Bush and his Cronies who lied to the world.  If you remember correctly, there were inspectors in Iraq who continued to say there were NO WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION! Again, Bush refused to listed and had his own aganda planned.  Hillary did what any good politician would do, she looked at the information put before her (lies that they were) and voted in the best interest of her country.  Hillary is NOT to blame for this war...if you voted for Bush, then YOU are to blame!  Now it is time for the Bush Administration to stand up and accept responsibility for getting us into this mess and now is the time to bring our sons, daughters, spouses and parents home safe.  I also hope someday that George Dubbya will be charged as the WAR CRIMINAL that he is.  He is by far the WORST president this country has ever seen so regarless if it is Clinton or Obama as our next president, things can only get better!
To RUSH and anyone else with the belief that Hillary is struggling just because she is a woman:

A truly honest and competent female candidate would have swept this country with a landslide. This primary would be long over. Perhaps much of the 'dirt' and 'skeletons' in Hillarys closet are unfounded. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt with the Peter Paul lawsuit. There is just too much, however. This country IS DEFINATELY ready for a female President, just not Hillary, I'm sorry to say. What has Obama done to stand out?

Mr. Obama is an exceptional speaker. This alone is an important asset for our President to have. To get laws passed we need someone who can stand up and effectively point out his views and pull people together. Even if you believe in Hillary's ideas she will never gain the support to get them passed into law. The Republican party has long standing animosity against the Clinton Administration. Those voting for Hillary just don't seem to understand this. It's no piece of cake being President. There are very few things the President actually has 'dictatorship' control over.

Pulling people together: Yes, uniting this country. In the last few months, Obama supporters have expanded from coast to coast while Hillary supporters almost appear to be shrinking.

Making the right decisions: No to a senseless war. Beating a dead horse by repeating this? I don't think so. How could anyone take the loss of human life lightly.

I am sorry to be critical here but please everyone, at least study the issues more deeply. Learn how politics works, and understand that Mr. Obama is a great opportunity for us. He can unite us. He can help this become a better nation. His communication skills will help him with foreign affairs as well. Open your hearts. Go beyond just wanting a female because this decision is VERY important. The United States cannot afford to waste another 4 years. Hillary IS A VERY INTELLIGENT AND DEDICATED WOMAN. But she is not the best candidate. Thx.

GO OBAMA!!!! YES WE CAN!!!! ITS TIME FOR CHANGE!!!!
I had, and still have, this problem with Mrs.Clinton.

Why didn't she run in 2004 when Bush was ruining America with runnaway spending, Iraq war, etc. and ruining the world with Global Warming (G.W.), War of destruction, arrogance, etc.  ??

I always thought that the Clintons are a good friend, or even a close friend, of the Bushs more than any of us may be willing to admit.

In my opinion, Mrs.Clinton did not run in 2004 because (1) she cared more about herself than the country or the Democratic party; and (2) Mrs.Clinton did not want to ruin Bush's friendship by running against him.

Did anybody think WHY in the world she did not run in 2004???
I think the Media Bias is so disturbing in this election. Obama plays the same song as Bush did at the end of his rallies. Fortunately, the media do not get to dictate this election. Let them go to the bus so Senator Clinton can have time to sit with real people and answer their questions with real answers.

I care too much about my country to be blinded by someone who will not directly answer questions from his potential voters and preaches to us all about change. We are not an ignorant electorate and we all know that when Bush is gone, there will most decidedly be change no matter who is in office.

We must look to what is truly the greater good for us all and that cannot be found in words. Actions speak volumes. I fall into the category that the Media seems to think flocks to Obama. Yes, I have a JD just as he, I am White and have voted Democratic my entire life. But I want answers, not rhetoric and if he should be the nominee in November, I can not and will not vote for him. It is not in the best interest of this country.
Im tired of all the billary and chillary crap/ It may be her days are numbered. He looks like and sounds like a liar and so does she, im sorry but this country needs a change and Mr Obama is the change. To hear her tell it Obama can't beat McCain, well im sorry but Obama will win the white house and get this country back on track and show the American people that he can lead this country.
HIS TIME HAS COME.......GO OBAMA
Yeah, that'll keep those mills up and operating.

Paul Whitfield

Please Paul, do not fear.

Obama will bring his message of hope to the good people of Maine. As long as there is hope, then everyone in Maine should feel happy about their situation.

Hillary of course used to saw wood as a child, and she knows the heartbreak of not being able to do that anymore. Bill too has been known for sawing some wood in his younger days, and he too feels your pain.

The reason no WMD's were found, was because we gave two weeks notice!  To chalk this up as a conspiracy by the US government is now and always will be ludicrous!!  As a Marine in Desert Storm, I can attest first hand that Iraq had and utilized chemical and biological weapons.  Let's get at the true meaning behind this.  If you have no morals, then you cannot be expected to tell the truth on the campaign trail.  decide for yourselves who that may be!!!!!
What fools you mortals be. Ever wonder why it seems the Republican voter turn out seems to be low. I am a Republican, many of us Republicans instructed our wives to register and vote in the primary as Democrats and to cast a vote for Obama. We even contributed to his campaign. Guess who will be "Hoodwinked" come election day.
