Oh-eight (D): Hillary's 'super' problem

Posted: Wednesday, February 13, 2008 9:05 AM by Mark Murray
Filed Under:

Per the AP, “In a Feb. 8 letter to DNC Chairman Howard Dean, NAACP chairman Julian Bond expressed "great concern at the prospect that million of voters in Michigan and Florida could ultimately have their votes completely discounted." Refusing to seat the states' delegations could remind voters of the "sordid history of racially discriminatory primaries," he said.”

But Al Sharpton counters with this letter to Dean: “I write this letter as
a former Democratic candidate for President of the United States and a civil rights leader who has fought his entire life for fairness and justice for all people regardless of the color of their skin. I firmly believe that changing the rules now, and seating delegates from Florida and Michigan at this point would not only violate the Democratic party's rules of fairness, but also would be a grave injustice.”

CLINTON: The AP’s Ron Fournier writes, “For years, Bill and Hillary Clinton treated the Democratic National Committee and party activists as extensions of their White House ambitions, pawns in a game of success and survival. She may pay a high price for their selfishness soon. Top Democrats, including some inside Hillary Clinton's campaign, say many party leaders — the so-called superdelegates — won't hesitate to ditch the former New York senator for Barack Obama if her political problems persist. Their loyalty to the first couple is built on shaky ground.”

The timing of deputy campaign manager Mike Henry's resignation wasn't helpful to Team Clinton. The news came just as returns were rolling in and the Obama onslaught was on. Henry, of course, made the most news this cycle when his memo suggesting the campaign skip Iowa was leaked. In Henry's defense, what would this race look like if his advice had been followed? What would Clinton's financial situation look like if his advice had been followed? Last night's losses for Clinton in Virginia was probably particularly stinging to Henry, since his most recent campaign success took place in Virginia, where he guided Tim Kaine to victory in the 2005 Old Dominion gubernatorial race.

“Trying to overcome a string of losses and a staff shake-up, Hillary Rodham Clinton sought new energy Tuesday night from a boisterous crowd of about 12,000 in a state [Texas] she hopes will provide a rebound in her quest for the Democratic presidential nomination.” More: “But her sights were set on the March 4 Texas and Ohio primaries and on President Bush.”

OBAMA: In Wisconsin today, Obama is giving what his campaign is billing as a major economic speech. Per excerpts, Obama will say: “We are not standing on the brink of recession due to forces beyond our control. The fallout from the housing crisis that’s cost jobs and wiped out savings was not an inevitable part of the business cycle. It was a failure of leadership and imagination in Washington – the culmination of decades of decisions that were made or put off without regard to the realities of a global economy and the growing inequality it’s produced.”

Apology watch? Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, former chairman of the DNC and former Philadelphia mayor, who endorsed Clinton on Jan. 23, said, "You've got conservative whites here, and I think there are some whites who are probably not ready to vote for an African-American candidate.” As evidence, Rendell cited his own run against African American and former Steelers wide receiver Lynn Swann. "I believe, looking at the returns in my election, that had Lynn Swann been the identical candidate that he was -- well-spoken, charismatic, good-looking -- but white instead of black, instead of winning by 22 points, I would have won by 17 or so," Rendell said. "And that (attitude) exists. But on the other hand, that is counterbalanced by Obama's ability to bring new voters into the electoral pool."

I wonder if Mr. Rendell realizes that some people won't vote for lying white people either.

The offer to have a redo caucus in Florida and Michigan is fair. Hillary should take it or shut up.
Oh that's right she doesn't think caucuses are "fair".

But changing the rules in the middle of the contest are fair ?

When did any Clinton worry about FAIR?
Dolores Fleming – Your ignorace and bigotry is showing.  There is nothing factual about your rant..
I'm not so sure that completely eliminating Florida from all future elections is a bad idea. lol
Don't you Obama cult members realize the Republicans are using reverse psychology ... do you honestly think Karl Rove (the biggest Repuke of them all) would all but "endorse" the one they felt they would have trouble beating in the general election?  He's saying Hillary is the Repub's. dream candidate, so that people will do just what they're doing ... vote for Obama.  In reality, he knows the Repubs. will have a hard time beating Clinton, but is assured they'll make mincemeat out of Obama.  Use your brains, people. Again, it's called Reverse Psychology .. which usually works on folks without minds of their own. i.e.  Obama's cult following.  As a FL resident, I will NOT vote in the general election, if my vote is not counted in the primary.  Simple as that.  If my vote isn't important enough to count in the primary, don't count on it in the general.
J. Merle,
You are the one who is pathologically biased. You don't make an effort to explain why you are talking so hatefully of Obama and the media. If there are any critical issues you felt the media should address, you must throw in these issues. All you do is wave a big fat accusatory finger at anyone in this campaign season when your chosen candidate is bashed by us voters on this forum and whenever you see an article discussing about Hillary in negative terms. You will rejoice immediately if you see an article that is hateful or negative toward Senator Obama.
I am telling you, if you want to argue with voters who desire change, do so responsibly and with an informed mind. Most of your accusations are baseless and you have no evidence to support much of your hateful arguments. If Obama is flawed in your eyes, you should say so and provide facts to back up that claim, not because you are deeply in love with Hillary or pathologically resentful of the media -- if you are, then leave MSNBC alone and do your own fact checking.
To all my LATINO brothers and sisters "SI SE PUEDE"
WE WANT CHANGE. OBAMA is that change.
We don't want what we have had the past 20 years.
We need a new direction. "peace"

Sorry Al, but we live in American (at least us legals do) so it's "Yes we can."
Maria,
How is winning 8 states in a row with very different demographics “an illusion”?  How can HRC supporters keep ignoring the reality that the citizens of the USA (and Canada) are overwhelmingly voting for Obama?

Gov. Ed is trying, in vain, to influence voters who might depend on opinion rather than fact checking to make a decision -- a decision to vote for Hillary. This guy is painting PA whites as bigots, and I will see if that holds up when the election happens in March. You guys have to note that Obama won 9 red states to Hillary's 4 in the Super Tuesday contests.
some Hilalry suporters are sounding so "condenseding"  when they talk abouty Obama suporters being "decieved."   Yet, you count Hillary's time in the White House as a first lady as an "experience that prepares one to lead."

Setting all that aside, look at the many judgement calls the candidates made in teh past year.  WHO HAS BEEN CHANGING his/her position as the wind blows in a different direction?

WHO IS LOSING CONTROL OF HER STAFF?

WHO MADE MISCALCULATIONS AFTER MSICALCUALTIONS?

THE WAY THE CANDIDATES RUN THEIR CAMPAIGN TELLS YOU A LOT ABOUT THEIR LEADERSHIP QUALITIES AND THE WAY THEY MAY RUN THE COUNTRY.

GO OBAMA.

The accusation that Barack Obama has no stance and that he has nothing more than an inspirational message is the naive response. It is a talking point promulgated by the Clinton campaign. Have those who push this viewpoint ever actually watched the entirety of an Obama speech? It includes details...very specific details. However, the highlights shown on the cable networks are exactly that: points in a speech which arouse the crowd. Simply because Clinton adds large numbers to her dialogue, does not mean that she is more specific, particularly when no one knows from where that money is supposed to come.
Those of you who claim Obama is all talk and no substance are clearly not paying attention.  It is possible to be both inspirational and substantive.  There are perfect moments for the expression of both qualities.  Barack is articulate and inspiring in televised stump speeches and detailed and substantive in debates, the more appropriate place for discussions of the ins-and-outs of his policies.  Get your heads out of your rear ends and pay attention.  Stop dismissing his awe inspiring rhetoric as nothing more than platitudes and empty promises.  If you want to see below the surface, stop being so damn superficial and open your ears.
If being in the White House gives Hillary experience, then we should vote in the White House pastry chef, Roland Mesnier - he's been there like 25 years! He/she probably has more experience than anyone!
Hillary Clinton is using divisive tactics to win votes. She and Bill have more than hinted that Obama won certain states because of a higher than average black population and now she is bunching all latinos/mexicans into a big group for herself.
Individuals are voting, not mexicans, not whites nor blacks, not morans........
I believe she will find that her "Latino" vote will be insulted by her tactics.
I have to ask if she is ready on 'Day One' what has she done in her political capacity to make that claim. I can think of nothing.
All this Obama fervor (which seems to be incredibly negative and virulently nasty on this site) confirms one thing:  No one can shoot themselves in the foot like the Democratic party.  Remeber the last time a president was elected who has such little experience? Yup - 2000 and 2004.  That worked out nicely didn't it?  Obama nominee = President McCain
Obama has a lot of Republicans voting for him and it looks like all is going as they've planned.  If Obama ends up being the Dem nominee, the Republicans will wipe the floor with him.  He'll never ba able to run again untarnished with the same blind rock-star cult following he has today.  McCain will be a one-tern President, and Hillary will run again and win the Presidencey in 4 years.
no substance in his speech
no credits for doing anything as a senator
Obama, how would he win?
half of the democrats vote for him -possible
because democtats usually select a unqulified candidate such as Kerry in 2004

but I believe most of the Americans are smart enough to select a qualified president.

so it is impossible for him to win the general election.

America is a great nation.

God bless American.

I think this election is going to be a tragedy. Obama is not ripe, nor does he have the background or experience to be President of this great country. Obama appeals to the irresponsible youth whose philosophy is "me, myself and I" which is the very wrong of our sosciety today. Look at this cooulture which dresses like beggars, listen to their immoral music, listen to their decrepit language. Is that what America wants.? Europe and Asia are laughing at us. We are loosing our credit in the world at large.Be sensible, and vote for the energetic, smart and professionally capable Hillary Clinton who is the only one capable and experienced to run this country.
