The Washington Post: Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) swept Republican primaries in Virginia, Maryland and the District last night, defeating former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee and adding to his vast delegate lead in the race to become his party's presidential nominee. But even as he dominated the Potomac Primary, McCain lost conservatives in Virginia, as he has across the South and parts of the Midwest -- trailing Huckabee among that group and evangelicals as he attempts to unite a fractured Republican Party behind his candidacy.”

The New York Times: “Mr. Huckabee got a boost from conservative and evangelical Christian voters in [Virginia], but not enough to overcome support among moderates and nonevangelical Christians for Mr. McCain, who won 50 percent of the vote. Mr. McCain also prevailed in the District of Columbia, with 68 percent of the vote, and in Maryland, where he had 55 percent of the vote with 67 percent of the precincts reporting.”

“Flashing a grin, McCain later congratulated Huckabee for his spirited run in Virginia, saying, ‘He certainly keeps things interesting, a little too interesting at times tonight, I must confess.’”

And then he said this about his Dem rival, the Los Angeles Times writes: “‘We know where either of their candidates will lead this country, and we dare not let them. They will paint a picture of the world in which America's mistakes are a greater threat to our security than the malevolent intentions of an enemy that despises us and our ideals.’ After assailing the Democratic candidates, McCain puckishly ended by swiping one of Obama's lines, declaring, ‘I am fired up and ready to go!’”

repubs are gonns lose in the biggest landslide ever not only the white house but also the senate and house of representatives will all be controlled by dems for the good of AMERICA and the world.
Now McCain is using Obama's lines? Too funny. Somehow it doesn't seem to fit him as well as Obama.

All joking aside, assuming for a moment these two will face off against one another, it will be a fun campaign. My guess is there will be a lot of good natured shots back and forth, as opposed to a mean, nasty knock-down, drag-out. Both will obviously try to win, and will seek to differentiate himself from the opponent, but I think there's a chance it could actually be a mature and respectful contest.
So why does the rest of the world think America is the one with malevolent intentions? How would a President McCain demonstrate we act on our ideals and aren't just out to protect our oil and corporate interests? I think Obama represents and embodies the best of what it is to be American. His is the face I want the world to see.
Well said Paul, I think if Clinton were to win the nomination it would just bring the country backwards.  Obama and Mccain can have a debate about issues, assuming Obama does have some position, but hopefully they will come out and Mccain will prevail!
McCain Looks OLD
Wow does this guy look worn out. He needs for Huck to lay off him so he can catch up on his sleep. It was scary seeing his "victory speech" last night--no enthusiasm from him or his crowd. It was really embarassing vs. Obama's envigorating speech to a viabrant crowd. McC needs to take his vitamins. Looks like he's eight years too late (and the country would have been far better served.)

I think the dems will win handily in November, but not by the biggest landslide in history.  Reagan-Mondale '84 will hold that record forever, I believe it was 525 - 13 (in the electoral vote cout).
Someone get the Padded Room ready for J. Merle, he's gonna need it after last night!Van disappeared long ago, when he could'nt pull anyone to Hillary.
If the Clinton's care anything about the Democratic Party, we all love, they will find a way to bow out Gracefully.
No one to date has brought this up. The Clinton's have Lifetime Secret Service protection. Are they having to reimburse the Secret Service for following them while they campaign? Chuck Todd or anyone have thought's on this?

Barack Obama for President!!!!!!!!
I think mike huckabee is going to win wisconsin
and hawaii he is doing a great job out there
he will get my vote
Okay folks! Let's get real here. Wife and I are anything but evangelicals. Love Jesus but abhor organized religion. Huckabee is our man for two main reasons. SECURE OUR BORDERS and ABOLISH THE EVIL EMPIRE.......the IRS!!!! Seperate church and state. We're talking politics here, leave religion out of it for crying out loud.
"How would a President McCain demonstrate we act on our ideals and aren't just out to protect our oil and corporate interests?"

Forbid democrats from speaking on camera?
Congrats to the voters who participated in yesterdays primaries/caucuses.  Our fellow Americans who took their valuable time to engage in the election process deserve a pat on the back and a hearty well done!!  And to Hill & Huck, as the song goes, Na na na na, hey hey, goodbye...
the handwriting seems to be on the wall for Hillary. But its not over till the fat lady sings, and she's still in the dressing room waiting for the word from Hillary, and Lady Clinton doesn't give up easily.
Mc Cain vs Clinton-a real dog fight in the making if it happens. Obama vs McCain-let's hope the primary enthusiasm shows up at the polls in November for Obama otherwise the Republican "smear and fear" machine will make mincemeat of the "skinny kid with a funny name". Glad to see the 'racism' element abating somewhat, but there are still too many uneducated  white racist gun nuts on the loose out there to make life precarious for any president whose blood is 'tainted' . It is still disappointing to see the level of mysogynist attitudes among our male population, however the future looks encouraging.I could live with McCain, but his loyalties rest primarily  with his political party above all other persuasions. Despite his proven patiotism, that's scary.
Here we go with the Republican scare tactics again.  "Democrats can't protect you from ????? (insert whatever the current theme is)."  Do they really think Americans are that stupid?

There you go Dave, TN, attacking free speech. Republicans are allergic to telling the truth: we planned to invade Iraq before 9/11 happened and the reason was to protect our oil interests. 9/11 gave the Bush-ites cover. Ever read the Downing Street memo?
There's no way Huckabee will win HI.  Just no way.  He's way too conservative for them.

None of the Above '08!
From what we saw last night, “fired up and ready to go” aptly describes one of the two front-running candidates, but it’s not Senator McCain.  Viewed only from the standpoint of effective rhetorical techniques, it is fair to say that Senator Obama will take Senator McCain apart in any debate.  Contrary to what most republicans may think, on national security issues, Senator Obama’s task is extremely easy.  He is “pure” on the war in Iraq, while Senator McCain has joined himself at the hip with George W. Bush, and now faces the consequences of his own choice.  He will have to defend his statement that we may need to stay in Iraq for 100 years and explain (a) how we will pay for it; (b) how we will manage to maintain our current troop concentration in light of the growing pressures caused by the surge; and (c) what on earth we might possibly accomplish by it.  He needs to defend our failed strategies in Pakistan and Afghanistan and to articulate how we can confront the greatly renewed terrorist threat from those countries, while maintaining a large presence in Iraq.  He needs to explain how he thinks he can get our allies in Europe and Australia to help us when they won’t answer a call from Mr. Bush.  He needs to articulate a policy for Iran that’s more than “bomb, bomb, bomb,” and finally, he needs to confront the failure of the Bush administration to close any kind of deal between the Israelis and the Palestinians.  Make no mistake, Senator, this is a very difficult task.  Just saying you are fired up and ready to go will not be enough -- not this year.
Senator Obama? John McCain won't debate Mike Huckabee! Because if he did, Mike Huckabee would win every primary from here to the convention.
"Biggest landslide in history"?!? God its February.. and Obama's lead is around 5 or 6 points; FDR defeated Landon by Nearly 20. Most of Obama's current separation is based on the fact that McCain is taking on a lot of bad press right now because of the sore losers on the right of my party. The polls will tighten significantly as McCain will bludgeon Obama on foreign policy (in the same way that he did Romney) and call into question Obama's rhetoric of 'hope' with no substance. You can also be sure that McCain's campaign will do a great job making sure that America draws the sharp distinction between the draft-dodging polarizer GWB, and a true American hero with a history of the bipartisanship that the nation so sorely yearns for right now. But please cast McCain in the role of underdog.. in fact, just leave him for dead. If history has taught us anything, that's just the way he likes it.
Amy B Portland, ME- I totally agree on your opinion of Obama- he's by far the only decent choice left.

Doug, I'm rather indifferent about the FairTax, but if you think that Huckabee is any more committed to securing our borders than McCain, you should realize that shortly before this campaign, Huckabee also was against immigration enforcement and was pro-amnesty.  Don't believe me?  Do some research on the LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens) convention in Littlerock in June 2005 when Huck was the keynote speaker...

His speech advocated for open borders and amnesty. He also called immigration enforcement efforts within the U.S. as “un-Christian, un-American, irresponsible and anti-life.”

Just FYI.
Mccain was a war hero and deserves the utmost respect for the price he paid 6 yrs of his youth lost to torture as a pow. fuck Rush ,Shawn,Mark laVinn and any other of these talk show hosts who attack Mccain just for having a mind of his own and not following 100% of the far right nuts who have done more in the past 7yrs to attack free speech whichich they ironically accuse john mccain of simply for trying to prevent elections from being bought by huge special interests that crush the voice of the average American Citizen. He at least helped to limit some of that and return some ability of the average citizen to way in. while imperfect at least he proved to me that hes not a robot. since when does not being a george bush, limbaugh, hannity, lavinn ditto head ur a great american blah, blah, blah, blah, blah make him a so called maverick. He s right in the center where 85% of american are. whats more hes willing to compromise we might actually get something done thats benificial to our country in the capital if thi so called maverick becomes president. P.S. Sen Mccain survived 6 yrs of torture I think he can overcome these talk radio nuts i have just mentioned who have never seem a day of war much less what the honerable Sen. went through. they probably would flee for their lives if physically challenged by ne1 outside thier little studio where all they have to do to avoid confrontation is run their mouths a little and hang up the phone. this comes from a veteran thank you very much.
Terrence -- agreed. He's not my candidate, but Huckabee would have a far better chance of standing up to either Obama or Clinton in a debate. McCain will struggle, both on defense (more so if it's Obama) and on domestic issues (after all, he hasn't read Greenspan's book and, like the Wizard of Oz, doesn't know how it works). On domestic issues, Huckabee even sounds a little like Clinton with regard to the public works stimulus idea. Clinton would have problems with both republicans on the war and national security because, like John Kerry, she was for the war until she was against it, but unlike Kerry, she can't admit that voting for the war was a mistake.  Is that because she doesn't really believe it was?
Anna: As if the Democrats have had any better luck. You forget that not a single Democrat president since Israels 1948 founding[Truman],has had any success in bringing ''peace''to the Middle East.[even Carter failed, for by securing the soon-to-be-murdered Egyptian Sadat,he reckoned without the rise of HAMAS and HEZBOLLAH]. The Republicans are thus in good company. However,Bush did something that no other president ever did. He recognized the legitimacy of the PAs government.[Its PM is now in Washington meeting with the Bush administration]. Obviously,Camp David[Clinton] was a spectacular failure as it brought Arafat to the table, virtually guaranteeing failure, and launching the 2nd Intifada in 2000.
Bush, while visiting the region late last year took the extraordinary step of blaming both sides in the conflict even as Israeli PM Olmert was standing next to him. No other president in modern history has done this either.
Pass to Obama, and it was he who defended a military invasion of Pakistan. What he would ''solve''with such a tactic is beyond me as the quite fluid al Qaeda would merely seek another hole, while engaging the US against Pak forces in another general war in another ME nation.
Obama was out to lunch on the FISA reform bill now passed by the Senate. This will severely damage his anti-terror credentials,as it places him within the ranks of the Kossacks in his leftwards lurch.[21 Democrats, all moderates, joined the GOP[including McCains ''yea''vote], in passing this bill,as it is foolhardy in the extreme to kneecap the surveillance of electronic methods depended upon by the jihadi in order to allow him the means to launch further attacks against not merely the US,but Europe and Canada as well]. Then too,Obama is forced to reconsider his push for an immediate Iraq withdrawl, originally performed to placate the aforementioned Kossacks,as it becomes all too apparent that Iraq is not the place it was in 2006.[Todays Washington Post ,hardly a protector of the Bush administration, calls any such move ''foolhardy''].
In addition, after the Iranian gunboat antics in the Hormuz Straits recently,[oddly, but not surpisingly, seen by the Tinfoil Brigade as a US Navy/Bush ''plot''],both Hillary and Obama revealed perhaps more than they wanted when they publically declared in speeches that they would use the US military to ''protect the oil lanes'',meaning,Wars For Oil.
''Hope''and ''Yes We Can''may be all well and good for an isolationist America, but the world at large has created more deadly demands, requiring a stronger hand to deal with these threats[such as those taken against HEZBOLLAHS leader who was vaporized in Damascus today, the place of Pelosis foolish ''Road to Peace'']. Obama is not the one. If elected, these threats will not disappear with platitudes or weak threat. They will increase.
