Strickland: Standards for Clinton

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
DAYTON, OH, Feb. 14 -- Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, a Clinton backer, said the senator would win big in this delegate-rich state. Winning by big margins here and in Texas will be key if she is to remain comptetive after a string of big post-Super Tuesday wins by Barack Obama.

Strickland also lamented the "triple" and "quadruple" standard he believes Clinton faces as a woman running for president.

"We are not going to let up for the next few days and weeks," he said after a roundtable on the home foreclosure crisis here Thursday. "I believe that Ohio will speak loudly and clearly. That she will have an impressive victory in Ohio and that that will send a message across America."

Recent polls show the New York senator leading Obama in the state. Unprompted, Strickland spoke about the difficulty Clinton faces as a female candidate.

"You know it's tough for a woman to seek the presidency. It's also tough for an African-American to seek the presidency and I understand that, but it seems as if, you know, there's not a double standard when it comes to Sen. Clinton seeking this office, but there's a triple and a quadruple standard and I think she's dealing with all of this with great dignity and courage," he said.

When asked what he meant by triple and quadruple standards, Strickland gave a few examples. "Well, you know, you gotta be strong. You gotta be appropriately emotional. You can't be too critical of your opponent, but you've got to be critical enough. It goes on and on and on. There are assessments made of Sen. Clinton that would never be even considered for a male candidate," he said.

Quadruple standard is right.  When Clinton challenges Obama's record or his refusal to debate, the media is all over her.  Even President Bush, on the week that his administration admitted to torturing prisoners, gets milder treatment.  You would expect the media to call for possible War Crimes charges against the President, but rather, they focus on harping on how hopeless the Clinton campaign is, and when she should drop out to preserve the Democratic Party.
I am sure Hillary is going to cry on the eve of March 4th elections. Shame. Shame.
Wow, how much whinin already...Playing the gender card and whining...Yeah, that's what we need in our next president; that's what will effect the change this country so desperately wants...My god, aren't we all sick of this enough already?
Thank you Governor Strickland -  Do you think Obama is the Messiah?  I see that out on the internet - Perhaps that is why is so hard for Senator Clinton.
I know this has been very hard for her and she has my core Democrat support and everyone else I know that is a real Democrat.  Obama has a cult, non realistic following and it is just plain scary.
Absolutely agree with the governor. The love
fest heaped upon Obama by the media is just
strange. He's not been held to the same
standards he might have been held to had he
been a White candidate. The media treats him
like a circus anomaly/rock star and downplays
every mention of any movement forward by
Senator Clinton. As an African American
professional, I find it appalling that this
young man allows himself to be treated with
so much patronism by the media to gain a win
at any cost when he's simply unprepared to
be leader of the free world and blatantly
lacks proper experience. Were he White, it
would be discussed non-stop and we'd hear
warm, fuzzy stories of how Senator Clinton's
hair looked "just right" and how beautiful she
looked in a suit. What we hear is Clinton
"spin" machine, "Billary", and bunk that does
nothing to describe who she really is as a
viable candidate. And if this man gets into
office and he fails because of his ignorance,
the media will feign shock and say, "how could
we have known?"
Pass some of what you are smoking Gov. Strickland, I too want to hallucinate.
DAYTON, OH, Feb. 14 -- Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, a Clinton backer, said the senator would win big in this delegate-rich state.

I pasted the above from MSNBC's politics page because it worries.  How can the Ohio Gov. make a positive state this so far ahead of time?  I am extremely concerned about this.

This is so very true.  Well said governor...
"Well, you know, you gotta be strong. You gotta be appropriately emotional.  You can't be too critical of your opponent, but you've got to be critical enough.  It goes on and on and on.  There are assessments made of Sen. Clinton that would never be even considered for a male candidate."

Excuse me, but welcome to the real world of ANY candidate for ANY office!  Wouldn't be considered of any male candidate?  I beg to differ!

Remember when Howard Dean's candidacy ended?

"YEARGH!"

Sounds like somebody got too emotional and, well, game over!

Sorry that Hillary has to run a real campaign, there, Ted!
Is it just me or are the Clinton's beginning to spin a bias against women to possibly sway that vote back in the way of her after the margin in Virginia? I am not trying to be rude I am just a person who loves the spin in politics and I find it brilliant. First you have the gentleman from Penn. who brought up the race issue, but then stated that Hillary had the same problem with men who didn't want to vote for her. Now you have the OH. Gov. saying something along those lines. Just a thought and would like to see peoples reaction.
Hmm, so actually he said nothing at all...
Sorry Gov. you are in for a rude awakening.
Exactly right!

and point number 1 should be that if a woman with only state legislative experience came in as a freshman senator and tried to run for president...she would be laughed out of the race before she ever got in. (no matter how pretty she talked)
that is just fact
So poor Hillary is a victim again?  I have three points for Hillary Clinton and her supporters:
NAFTA, WHITE HOUSE RECORDS, and TAX RETURNS.
..'nuff said.
Having a former president for a husband, having name recognition as former 1st lady has more than made up for  it.

The world watched her cry, & it actually helped her win.

This is just another ploy to get sympathy.
So poor Hillary is a victim again?  I have three points for Hillary Clinton and her supporters:
NAFTA, WHITE HOUSE RECORDS, and TAX RETURNS.

Congratulations Governor Strickland for calling it like it is.  From comments in the media, and blogs like this, it is obvious that it is a lot easier for people in this country to be sexist than racist.

I heard about the Hillary nut cracker that cracks nuts between her legs.  Plenty of people find that hillarious, but where is the Obama black face lawn jockey?  It doesn't exist because if it did the NAACP, Al Sharpton, and Jesse Jackson would be all over it like flies on stink, and rightfully so. And no one would get away with making comments akin to those about pimping out Chelsea, concerning Obama.

When Senator Clinton got misty eyed in New Hampshire there was plenty of talk about this being a ploy to gain votes.  God forbid she could be accepted as a human being instead of being characterized as a weak woman, or a manipulative power hungry bitch.  Meanwhile Senator Obama runs around the country lying about not taking lobbyist and PAC money, but only the LA Times seems to care.  It's okay for a man to be a bold faced liar, but not okay for a woman to cry.  Again, the Governor is spot on.

I am optimistic that we are not hearing or seeing racially motivated stereotypes regarding Senator Obama because we as a society are evolving beyond that.  But it is quite clear that American society has a long way to go when it comes to respecting, and caring about women and women's issues at home, and overseas.  Women still don't get equal pay for equal work.  And as this website reported yesterday, rape is a weapon of war.

Even as we applaud ourselves for the existence of the Barack Obama campaign, we need to take a long hard look at how we see women, and how a woman, with the guts to run for the highest office in the land, is being treated.

I salute Senator Clinton for her efforts; as a ceaseless advocate for women and children in the Senate, for running for President on issues that she holds important, and for standing up to the unending belligerence of this country's chauvinists.

You go girl!
Maybe she should try being black.  Whine, whine, whine and play that gender card for her.
Poor Hillary, my tiny violin is pulling out the triple, nay, quadruple stops in a heartbreaking melody.
Strickland sounds like a perfect surrogate for Clinton.  All excuse, no excitement.
Bravo Hillary it is time to force the senator from Ill. to put down the pom-poms and undress the details behind the cheerleading rethorics. It is imperative for the nation to know detals of his secutity vision on how well he intends to keep us secure. The nation also deserves to know how well he intends to have us maintain  foods on our tables and how he envision prosperity for us instead of miseries for the next 4 years. It is time for the great visionary to uncloud his crystal ball for us to read the lines of his visions.
Hillary will win big because Obama will be ruined by the Larry Sinclair law suit.

Democrats, are you willing to risk loosing the general election by nominating Obama? My prediction -- all superdelegates will switch to Hillary at the convention because that Obama is no long electable because of this Larry Sinclair scandal.

Vote for Hillary Clinton! No dirt and surprises after 16 years of republican scrutiny!!
Strickland, the only thing I would say is, you INJECTED th gender card yet in another attempt to pander to the women of America.
Women are smarter than you, and they recognize that Hillary would have had an easy time winning this nomination had it not been for her husband's problematic presidency, for Hillary's use of deceptive tactics and lies, her long years of work as a corproate lawyer and Wal Mart board member working on behalf of women (she instead turned her back on them), etc. Yet, you, as a foolish Hillary supporter, claim she is merely facing barriers as a woman. If so, she won't even have beaten all the whit male candidates in this nominating season so easily as did Obama.
So, stop playing the gender and race card. You cannot win with desperation; you have to win with an open heart and mind.
I don't understand his comments.  His examples are issues that both candidates are going through except for needing to be "appropriately emotional."  I'm sorry but I don't think the leader of the free world should be crying in public.  How will she be able to defend our nation in this world when there's a chance she'll break down again and start crying.
If Clinton wins the Democratic nod.....then a lot of young college students will simply stay away from the polls in November.....she can not bring the Democrats and the Republicans together to act like Americans - hence many people will swing over to vote for McCain even though they don't care for him, as he will be the lesser evil of the two!

She has already lived in the White House, it is about time to get the Bush/Clinton era out of the White House!

I truly pray that the more educated people can get behind Obama to support him......he is offering our country change and hope.

The only change Hillary offers is that she is a woman!  Big deal!
We have seen since the beginning of time what "men" do politically. Now that we have a women who can win and lead, let's get behind her all the way. After all when you get right down to it, Obama is just another man.
Amen and it's so obvious.  I am terribly disappointed in the men in this country who still just can't bring themselves to vote for a woman, even when her knowledge and detailed plans make it obvious that she is the best and most qualified for the job.  Obama finally came out with a big economic speech rather than his usual flowery ones and it was ridiculouly obvious just where he stole his "new" ideas.

"Obama's (economic) plan. is the most shameless piece of potential plagiarism that I have ever seen. He basically took Clinton's words and Clinton's policies and called them his own. If I were a professor I'd give him an F and try to get him kicked out of school," said Kevin Hassett, Sen. John McCain's economic advisor and the Director of Economic Policy Studies at the American Enterprise Institute.

Those covering Senator Obama’s economic speech in Wisconsin today could be forgiven if it felt like déjà vu all over again. Voters may ask themselves that if Senator Obama cannot produce his own ideas on the campaign trail, how will he solve new problems as President?

Senator Obama’s only "new" ideas were ones that Senator Clinton proposed months ago:

His "new" proposal for a national infrastructure bank is one that Hillary proposed August 8, 2007. ["I’m proud to co-sponsor Senator Dodd and Senator Hagel's National Infrastructure Bank Act that we just introduced to establish a federally-backed independent bank that will evaluate and finance large infrastructure projects by subsidies, loan guarantees, and bonds backed by the full faith and credit of the United States." Rebuilding America speech, 8/8/07; S. 1926, 8/1/07]

His "new" proposal to create 5 million green collar jobs was proposed by Hillary on November 5, 2007. ["And three, to move us from a carbon-based economy to an efficient, green economy by unleashing a wave of private-sector innovation in clean energy and energy efficiency. I believe that will create at least five million good new jobs from clean energy over the next decade." Energy and Climate speech, 11/5/07]

Google CEO Eric Schmidt praises Hillary’s plan to create 5 million Green Collar jobs, 11/5/07: "By emphasizing the connection between promoting a green efficient economy and job creation, Senator Clinton’s plan seeks to harness the power of technology and innovation to address one of our most pressing global challenges...The goal of producing 5 million new jobs can be achieved by private sector investment and bipartisan support for increased research and development in efficiency and clean energy."

In addition, while Senator Obama was busy resuscitating Hillary’s policies, he failed to offer real solutions for the most pressing economic challenges that Americans families face. As Hillary explained this morning, "a plan that fails to provide universal health care, fails to address the housing crisis, and fails to immediately start creating good paying jobs in America again will not turn the economy around and provide the real relief that our people need. We need real results not more rhetoric."

I have great respect for the REAL men of this country...like John Glenn who in endorsing Hillary Clinton because he knows and cares about what America needs!
More whining from, and on behalf of, the Clintons. How hard it must be for her to be the outsider candidate, with no cache to build up a campaign war chest, or name recognition, or a national reputation. She really has it so hard.
ted is right. Every woman who has managed or led others faces what he talks about. Wish he expanded that standard(s) in his remarks to recognize it for many successful women.
PLEASE! As a Woman, I am SO tired of hearing the Clinton campaign WHINE! We Women,  out here in the REAL WORLD, don't whine, we DO. Enough using Gender as an EXCUSE! Clinton is no role model for MY Daughter. Thanks, but I'll wait for Pelosi. SHE would be a DESERVING first Woman President.
As a woman, as a professional in the technology business, I think Strickland is dead-on in this statement in terms of women's having to over-prove their capabilities beyond those of others. I have experienced this reality myself, and it comes from womens' prejudices as much (if not more so than) as mens'. Where I diverge from Strickland's perspective in this election, however, is that in Clinton's case, her capabilities and experience for the job of USA President have paled in comparison with those demonstrated by her competitor - Barak Obama. When you closely review her background, and consider the mismanagement of her compaign and health care program effort of the 90s, (search "Cooper Experience) it becomes clear that she cannot adequately represent the Woman As President that so many of us so eagerly anticipate and would be proud to support. She is not the One.
It's easy being black these days, I guess.
"a few examples"? he gave two, which, in my estimation, equates to a "double" standard.
Strickland is a man who totally gets this about Clinton and Obama.  If this presidential contest is not about race, which Obama and about 80% of blacks would like you to beleieve, then it must be about just one more arrogant male trying to subdue and hold back a woman.
In two debates, I distinctly and clearly heard Obama make sexually biased, chauvanistic and demeaning remarks: "Hillary, you're likeable enough" and "Don't worry Hillary, you're on everybody's short list."  Obama needs to attend diversity training.  He's rude and arrogant.
How true, how true.  Reverse the genders of these two candidates and there wouldn't even be a race.
Amen Gov. Strickland!  The press was and still is focused on things about Hillary that would never be scrutinized about on a male candidate.  IS the press focused on obama's or Mccain's weight or what they wear?
NO! but if Hillary has a bad hair day or her suit is not just so-so, they eat it up,  I'm not saying that this goes on all the time against Hillary, I am saying this NEVER goes on with the male candidates.
"Well, you know, you gotta be strong. You gotta be appropriately emotional. You can't be too critical of your opponent, but you've got to be critical enough. It goes on and on and on. There are assessments made of Sen. Clinton that would never be even considered for a male candidate," he said.

Really?  Can you name one please?  Especially one that isn't specific to someone who's the spouse of an ex-President which very significantly changes the equation in both directions.  It'd be nice if the press followed up on statements like that rather than leaving them hanging.  Clinton surrogates constantly cry that she's being treated unfairly as a woman, but they have yet to demonstrate that.
It will be interesting to see if America votes the "Rock Star" (Obama) ticket or the Person-Who-Can-Run-the-Country ticket (Clinton). Americans have been allowed themselves to complacently get their information and education spoonfed to them from commercials, marketing campaigns and catchy slogans instead of the facts.

I'm interested in who is going to fix the messes we are in starting on DAY 1 -- and, like Whoopi Goldberg said, it's going to be the candidate who first drafted the solutions. That's Clinton.

What's Obama hoping for? To wing it???? Sorry, I'm not willing to bet my life or my family's life on an unproven candidate just because HE wants to be president.

Boo-Hoo!

She wants equal treatment, but she wants sympathy... can't have it both ways!!!

No one treats women worse than her husband... lets not forget that!!!!
I guess this state counts since Billary won. The Billary contingent is shameless, so watch out for a sneeky play to claim Florida and Michigan delegates.
Banish the two reprobates!

This is, literally, the stupidest thing anyone has ever said.

Barack Obama and Israel

The Audacity of Questioning Obama's Commitment to Israel

The ascent of Barack Obama from state senator in Illinois to a leading contender for the Presidential nomination in the span of just a few years is remarkable. Especially in light of a noticeably unremarkable record -- a near-blank slate of few accomplishments and numerous missed votes.

However, in one area of foreign policy that concerns millions of Americans, he does have a record and it is a particularly troubling one. For all supporters of the America-Israel relationship there is enough information beyond the glare of the klieg lights to give one pause.  In contrast to his canned speeches filled with "poetry" and uplifting aphorisms and delivered in a commanding way, behind the campaign façade lies a disquieting pattern of behavior.

One seemingly consistent theme running throughout Barack Obama's career is his comfort with aligning himself with people who are anti-Israel advocates. This ease around Israel animus has taken various forms. As Obama has continued his political ascent, he has moved up the prestige scale in terms of his associates. Early on in his career he chose a church headed by a former Black Muslim who is a harsh anti-Israel advocate and who may be seen as tinged with anti-Semitism. This church is a member of a denomination whose governing body has taken a series of anti-Israel actions.

As his political fortunes and ambition climbed, he found support from George Soros, multibillionaire promoter of groups that have been consistently harsh and biased critics of the American-Israel relationship.

Obama's soothing and inspiring oratory sometimes vanishes when he talks of the Middle East. Indeed, his off-the-cuff remarks have been uniformly taken by supporters of Israel as signs that the inner Obama does not truly support Israel despite what his canned speeches and essays may contain.

Now that Obama has become a leading Presidential candidate, he has assembled a body of foreign policy advisers who signal that a President Obama would likely have an approach towards Israel radically at odds with those of previous Presidents (both Republican and Democrat). A group of experts collected by the Israeli liberal newspaper Haaretz deemed him to be the candidate likely to be least supportive of Israel. He is the candidate most favored by the Arab-American community.

Joining Trinity United Community Church

When Obama moved to Chicago and became a community organizer, he found it expedient to choose a Christian church to join.  Even though his father and stepfather were both Muslims and he attended a Muslim school while living in Indonesia, suspicions based on his days as a child are overheated and unfair. Still, his full name alone conveys the biographical fact that he has some elements of a Muslim background.

Saul Alinsky, whose philosophy infused community organizing in Chicago, emphasized the importance of churches as a basis for organizing. There are literally hundreds of churches on the South Side of Chicago that Obama could have chosen from. He selected one that was headed by Reverend Jeremiah Wright, Junior. The anti-Israel rants of this minister have been well chronicled. Among the gems:

The Israelis have illegally occupied Palestinian territories for almost 40 years now. It took a divestment campaign to wake the business community up concerning the South Africa issue. Divestment has now hit the table again as a strategy to wake the business community up and to wake Americans up concerning the injustice and the racism under which the Palestinians have lived because of Zionism.
Jeremiah Wright, Jr.

Pastor Wright is a supporter of Louis Farrakhan (who called Judaism a "gutter religion" and depicted Jews as "bloodsuckers") and traveled with him to visit Col. Muammar al-Gaddafi, archenemy of Israel's and a terror supporter. Most recently, as head of the UN Security CouncilGaddafi prevented condemnation of attacks against Israel. As Kyle-Anne Shriver noted,

The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan received the "Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. Lifetime Achievement Trumpeteer" Award at the 2007 Trumpet
Thank God someone speaks the truth about what Mrs. Clinton is up against. She not only has to fight her opponent but the media too. She can't say anything against Obama or meida says its racial or she is attacking. I thought during an election you were supposed to show differences.
Thank you Strckland for putting that into perspective regarding the challenges Senetor Clinton faces. Before she even announced her running for the Presidency I prayed that she would annouce she would. Now I pray again she becomes the next President of the United States. She is more than qualified for the job!
