Strickland: Standards for Clinton

Posted: Thursday, February 14, 2008 6:48 PM by Chuck Todd

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
DAYTON, OH, Feb. 14 -- Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, a Clinton backer, said the senator would win big in this delegate-rich state. Winning by big margins here and in Texas will be key if she is to remain comptetive after a string of big post-Super Tuesday wins by Barack Obama.

Strickland also lamented the "triple" and "quadruple" standard he believes Clinton faces as a woman running for president.

"We are not going to let up for the next few days and weeks," he said after a roundtable on the home foreclosure crisis here Thursday. "I believe that Ohio will speak loudly and clearly. That she will have an impressive victory in Ohio and that that will send a message across America."

Recent polls show the New York senator leading Obama in the state. Unprompted, Strickland spoke about the difficulty Clinton faces as a female candidate.

"You know it's tough for a woman to seek the presidency. It's also tough for an African-American to seek the presidency and I understand that, but it seems as if, you know, there's not a double standard when it comes to Sen. Clinton seeking this office, but there's a triple and a quadruple standard and I think she's dealing with all of this with great dignity and courage," he said.

When asked what he meant by triple and quadruple standards, Strickland gave a few examples. "Well, you know, you gotta be strong. You gotta be appropriately emotional. You can't be too critical of your opponent, but you've got to be critical enough. It goes on and on and on. There are assessments made of Sen. Clinton that would never be even considered for a male candidate," he said.

Governor Strickland has it right on!  It's a shame how the media has treated Hillary.  See this video to get some sense for who she really is:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cySK6q2P_Nw

She's tested.  She's ready.  The time is now.  Go Hillary!
What? It's been considered for every major candidate for president in modern times. The whining is unbecoming. I don't recall an instance of the Obama campaign whining about media coverage or how candidates are required to conduct themselves, yet without pausing to consider, I can bring several of the Clinton campaign in the past week.
Gov. Strickland is right. The so-called "liberal" media has been all over Hillary since the get go. Is she being too emotional or too strong etc etc? My hope is that this all knowing media starts looking into Mr. Obama's past and character. What about his dealings with the Chicago slum lord? He seems too cocky and arrogant and only selling dreams.
Hillary has the facts and would be a much better President. What do we want, someone to give motivational speeches or to lead the country? Ohio will get Hill back on track!
Oh go stuff it. Clinton's difficulties stem from her own personality and her own sense of importance. She's NEVER once in her life been a person who could walk into a room and convince people that they could fix problems on their own. She lacks Obama's God-given ability to inspire anyone to do much of anything, and her history is one of failure followed by forbearance in dealing with issues stemming from her husband's failures, to (now, again) simply failing.

When will it be HER fault that she was on the wrong side of the Iraq question, that she was on the wrong side of the credit card-sponsored bankruptcy legislation, that she was on the wrong side of  understanding that this is about the future, and not the past. When will it be HER fault that she raised a lot of money and then peed it away to the point where she was broke? When will it be HER fault that  she simply has a hard time connecting with actual voters, and that her clapping to the music wild-eyed manic look is simply alarming rather than enticing?

She's made a lifetime of bad decisions, and most of the country has decided no thanks. Her gender has nothing to do with it. Put her against any number of other female Democrats, and she's still the least pleasant personality in the room. That reads, and it's no one's "fault" if voters aren't moved to support her.
TRUE THAT!!!
I love how Obama gains on hopes, and positive messages. The Clinton campaign lately seems to try sympathy, emotional breakdowns and victim cards and somehow is still losing..
Let's face it, Clinton as proven by her high negative numbers is universally disliked! Any qualification to dispute that is without a doubt someone not desiring to be realistic. Setting her 35 years of qualifications aside, she is abrasive, stale, vindictive, hates being told she's wrong and of late obvuscate and deperate. Sounds more than a little like George Bush! She claims in recent speeches that she is the solution, sorry to inform you Mrs. Clinton you are just more of the same!
Play that gender card! How about voting for the candidate that can change America for the better. The Clinton camp never stops playing politics, Clinton in office will mean a divided America for another 4 years. I am just so tired of this. No more Bush, no more Clinton. We need a fresh face and a fresh start.
As an adult, liberal, professional woman who voted twice for Bill Clinton, I am insulted by the suggestion that somehow not supporting Hillary Clinton is either sexist or irrational.  Does anyone really think this is an effective persuasive technique?  As a matter of fact, my positions on social issues are probably most closely aligned with hers. I agree that she has run a dignified and energetic campaign, for which I applaud her.  I’m proud of her as far as that goes, and think she has done great things to advance the position of women in national politics.  But after thinking this over carefully, I cannot support her for president because of her position(s) on the war in Iraq.  She stands by her vote authorizing the war, even though she now says she wants to get the troops out.  When John Kerry repudiated his vote, he did so from the moral high ground position that he had opposed the war even before it began and spoke out openly against it.  Mrs. Clinton cannot say that.  She did not speak out against the war until much later, when it became politically expedient to do so.  She cannot even say in retrospect that the vote to authorize the war may have been ill-considered, even though she has admitted not being as familiar with the applicable intelligence as she should have been.  All of this makes me question her statement now that she really wants to get the troops out.  My original candidates have all withdrawn from the race, but I now support Senator Obama enthusiastically, and not irrationally.  We should celebrate this historic moment instead of degenerating into this kind of useless -- and endless -- bickering over nothing.  The dems have a black candidate and a female candidate.  They both can’t be elected.  Being for one over the other doesn’t necessarily mean sexist or racist.  But the dems could still lose this election, and if they keep up this kind of inflammatory rhetoric, they just might.
Compounded by all the negative coverage she faces daily on MSNBC.
For all of those OBAMA fans, check out his church's website where he has been a member for over 20 years. For someone that talks about UNITY, somehow the description of the BLACK VALUE SYSTEM just doesn't fit in what this country needs as our next president! I am not racist in any way, but as a white person, if I attended an ALL WHITE church I believe my black & latino friends would question my basic values and beliefs, as well they should!
The media went mad on the Iraq war. Does anyone remember? They literally sold the war. The media has given more passes to George Bush and the Republican Rule than I have seen in my lifetime. Why?

Is the media now selling us Sen. Obama? I think the media has given a huge pass to Sen. Obama that it has not given Sen. Clinton. Sen. Obama has many things in speeches and in his voting records that are not being constantly criticized or analyzed, the reverse it simply not true. Sen. Clinton is under the gun constantly. So apparently something matters in this election year.  Something I think the media needs to be held accountable for.

An official of the Mc Cain campaign is resigning because he wouldn’t feel comfortable attacking Sen. Obama. Why? What is the real story here?

Elizabeth Edwards was quite outspoken on behalf of her husband. However, no criticism was piled on. Bill Clinton is the same with his wife and it is media insanity. I was deeply upset about the way so many ‘clips’ were used in this endeavor to take his comments out of context in every manner and done so with apparent glee.  I watched an interview with Mrs. Obama that frankly many of us noted had far more race related remarks than anything Mr. Clinton has ever said. Did any of the media go after this?  No. Why?

Politicians can and do SAY anything. However, their record shows what they have actually done. Records matter. Despite Sen. Obama’s constant criticism of the ‘past’ that is his chosen profession. His bio says his field is Constitutional Law. The Constitution is one of our most important pieces of the past.   A great deal of our past is what made us who and what we are today. To continually disparage the past is to insult many who worked, sacrificed, and even died to make this country what it has endured to become.

Without the politics of the past as Sen. Obama is so fond of saying  women would not have the right to vote,  we would still have segregation, African American’s could not vote. The past is the foundation of the future for all of us. Frankly, I resent his inference that the past is bad and his ‘promises’ for the future are only what is good. If Senator Clinton is politics of the past then so are a great many of us in this country. They call us baby boomers. Apparently we are the past in the world of Sen. Obama. That worries me folks. Worries me a lot.

Give me a BREAK!  Sen. Clinton has never been the "underdog"-- she is the frontrunner and has the crooked machine to run this campaign.  It is only the American people's will that can slow this crook and her husband down.

So what she's a woman;  so what Obama is an African American---- what about the issues and what about where this country needs to go.  Backwards or forward.... I hope that the people in Ohio prove everyone Wrong and vote to move forward with obama.
A sad day in  Ohio reading this story... Ted Strikland could end up being a 1 term Governor... As always machine politics at its best...  This is typical of people who only care about themselves and are not for the people...
More pity from the same set of Clinton butt sniffers. To them, Clinton is a victim.
I don't think a double, triple, or quadruple standard caused Hillary to vote for the war, or falsely claim that she thought she was voting for inspections, even though the bill was called Authorization for Use of Military Force in Iraq.  Nor does it explain her mismanagement of her campaign, which she allowed to go broke on Super Tuesday, with no plan for what came next.  Nor does it explain her attempt to cheat her way to the nomination by trying to change the rules to count votes cast in bogus elections in which her opponents were not allowed to campaign, and/or did not even appear on the ballot.
Oh, please, now she's playing the female victim role again! Read Time magazine's Feb. 14 analysis of what went wrong for Hillary.  It started with hubris: she thought she was inevitable.  Feb. 5 was to be her coronation.  She had a closed circle of loyal friends (not terribly competent) telling her what she wanted to hear.  No organization was put in place beyond Super Tuesday.  No plan B.  Obama out-hustled her, out-organized her, out fund-raised her.  He seized the best people in the smaller states.  He articulated a vision, marshaled the smartest, most capable people, inspired them, and executed the vision.  Gee, sounds like the qualities you'd look for in a Chief Executive.
Ohio is going to speak loud and clear and that  message will be CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN! Gov. Strickland campaigned here in Dayton with a very similar message of hope and change that I supported and voted for and seemed much more aligned with Senator Obama's message and yet he's backing Clinton...something about a VP short list.  Political ambition is a tricky thing.

Senator Clinton is a strong and intelligent woman who would have maintained  stronger support by being true to who she is. She has yet to say her vote for the war was one she regrets one that was wrong - that's a problem. She has been  mimicking the strategies of the Obama camgaign - might not have been her decision but she's sticking to the script. That's the turn off, not that she's a woman.

I hate it when they play the gender card...saying it's so hard to be a woman in the race and tearing up when it isn't turning out the way she wanted in Iowa.

I would never vote for anyone who portrays his or herself as someone who just wants to do good but can't get a break because of (insert card here)...I expect more from my candidates.
There is no quadruple standard for Clinton. If Obama was in the position that Clinton is in right now. People would be asking him to drop out. Sorry, that's just how I see it. Good luck to both Clinton and Obama as they try to make history. Go Dems!
Yeah and it's hard out here for pimp...

Hillary doesn't know anything about double triple or quadruple standards. This whole thing is the biggest fairy tale I've ever seen. I mean, man, it's all smoke and mirrors.
What a joke ... Instead of 'pity me' it's now 'pity her'

Yeah... very presidential. Rather take McCain !
If you cant handle the "quadruple" standard as a candidate, how are you going to handle as president.  I'm getting tired of the whining about the double standards and media coverage.  American voters are what they are, warts and all.  You knew what you were getting in to, and if its not fair enough for you then tough shit, thats politics.
anyone who uses tears to get the female vote would be judged just as harshly, probably more so if you are a male candidate. billary's people are just getting desperate.
I'm a woman in a career field dominated by men (engineer) and have been for 25 years. I am judged by how well I do my job.  I don't think Hillary Clinton is being judged any differently or harsher than Obama or McCain.  Politics is a dirty business, and I'm tired of Hillary and her surrogates making  excuses for her.  If this is any indication of how she will be as president, I'm not looking forward to it.  It will certainly be a long 4 years.
A sensible comment from a male elected official; otherwise, we hear only the outrage and sardonic wit from feminists like Erica Jung and Steinam to provide a counterbalance.
Gov. Strickland is right on.
The Clinton supporters are trying to play the gender card.  It is pathetic, how come the can't just run a campaign?  Now after saying they won't go negative, they go negative again.  The truth is the Clinton campaign is trying to win at all cost.  I admit winning is important in an election for the obvious reasons, but please look at to what lengths they go, regarding Florida and Michigan, has everyone forgot Nevada what their machine did there.  The Clinton's should have run a inclusive campaign rather than an exclusive.  And, how do you expect her to unite the party or country if you has been so exclusive in her effort to obtain the nomination.

Does anyone expect the Clinton's to unite the country?
We are dealing with two totally different candidates.

Those are all examples that are true of EVERY candidate.  If Obama gets overly critical, people start to question him as well.  If Obama started to cry because it gets tough sometimes, people would ridicule him to no end.

I wouldn't vote for Bill Clinton right now, either...
Well, Well Mr. Governor
What I am hearing from you the triple and quadruple standards. Remember she is competing and this is the territory.  If Senator Clinton is experiencing this now, how is she going to handle one of the most important jobs in the world.  Remember she is a woman and women are emotional, emotional.  There is no double standard it is just not her time.

I heard her say she is ready for day one, I don't think so.  If she can't put people into place to be accountable for her campaign, I sure don't want that type of leadership in the white house.  Remember she said that she would hold people accountable, well I think the way she handles her campaign, there is no accountability. To be broke and mismanaged right after Iowa. . . .  A wise wo(man) plans and counts the cost.   This is when the rubber meets the road. She sounds like an empty wagon with no wheels, it just isn't going anywhere.  I think it is a shame to wait two days later to congratulate Mr. Obams, she is a lady and where is her manners, a little too late and people remember.(emotions, emotions, emotions)  The people that did vote for in the Potomac area, deserve more that what she did leave the camp.  She has already painted the picture for Ohio when she loses, she will run.
I'm an ohioan and will not vote for Strickland in the future.
Oh Please, these party big wigs, supporters of clinton, will make any stupid argument to say that she is so strong.  Just like Bush she is trying to STEAL the election.  Just like Bush, she is a liar and a crook. Just like Bush she loves POWER, and not the American people.
Well, a two week suspension for David Shuster for the pimp remark.
Don Imus got fired for vulgar comments concerning back females.
The difference here was the female was white and a Clinton.
Looks like a double standard but then again MSNBC is the anti-Clinton cable network. A slap on the wrist was to be expected.

After HRC won New Hamshire, Matthews had prof. Dyson from Georgetown on to try and negate the win - "The Bradley Factor". He never did mention that Dyson was an Obama supporter.
what a bunch of BS. Hillary is loosing not because she is a women but by the fact that she ran on arrogance. That and she ran a disorganized campaign headed by a friend instead of someone better equiped to do the job. Shades of bush. Oh and how about the constant double speak as Mr Penn essentialy has said that every state she has lost does not matter. Hillary is a remarkable women but if she can't run a campaign how can she run the country? We need to move on try something new and end the dynasim. There is no quadruple standards about any of this.

Administration's own analysis suggests spiraling deficits, job losses , all egnored because of Lobbyist influence . At least we could have had some fees paid on duty free  Imports to make up the losses in our SS and Medicare systems , but I guess that was not acceptable by the Multi-National lobbyists , hum ???

why didn't Senator Hillary Clinton vote against the Bankruptcy law in 2005 , that gave the mortgage lenders the  power to be brazen in altering the standard lending practices of the 20 % down traditional home loans , to the ones thats caused this crisis that we Tax payers get to pay for in Stimulous packages ??

I hate when Clinton supporters use the gender card.  I really believe she has a different standard because she is a Clinton, not because she is a woman. The Clinton family is known for parsing and changeing stances based on what is popular at the time.  Unfortunately, due to her pedestrian work as a Senator for my state of New York and this history... I find myself asking how much her statements are actually true and not colored by politics before I hear her message. I believe that is her issue, people question her authenticity and her message is lost in the shuffle.
Gov. Strickland hit it on the head.  Obama as Senator Biden states is "clean" meaning he can be a chameleon that can appear to whites and blacks being that he is bi-racial is being used by the media outlets who choose Obama (as a man) going against a formidable Clinton (a woman).  Sexism is at play in the democratic nomination.

Obama if you win it, you should not be surprised that Bill Bennett and other Republicans will use RACISM to have McCain beat you.  Whether it be attacking his religion (as a muslim from 0-26 years) or his race, they will go after him hard.  Media pundits especially on MsNBC and other networks are downplaying it because they want to kill two birds (a woman and black man) with one stone.
Why does the Clinton campaign say that Obama isn't tough enough to handle the media scrutiny and then whine about their own treatment in the media. It appears that Hillary not Barack isn't tough enough to handle the scrutiny of the media
I am so SICK of this poor Hilary crap!!
If the Clintons hadn't been so arrogant and presumptuous as to think she was going to be a shoe-in in this election maybe she wouldn't be having the "problems" she's having now. But now, for them and their supporters to whine about every little thing, about the fact that they actually have to put up a little effort is DISGUSTING and BORING!!
Don't underestimate the excitement and the vision for HOPE and CHANGE that Obama brings with his so-called "rhetoric", GREAT PRESIDENTS HAVE ALSO BEEN GREAT SPEAKERS and great speakers have certainly made great changes in history!! And it certainly beats that constant droning Clinton whine!!
The country is being awakened to a vision of how much better these UNITED STATES can be when they truly UNITE; the future accomplishments that will stem from this wave of HOPE; the young kids poised to take over leadership on this tsunami of HOPE! What better way to start!! Don't take that away from them, don't destroy it with more of the same old Washington manipulative games!!
No, my friend, don't underestimate the power and strength of HOPE, it's carried many a people through many a journey, many a battle, and many a struggle and I HOPE it will again!!!
No male candidate is ever judged on the actions of his wife.  Even Chris MAtthews said on the air, she has been an excellent senator, down to business and scandal free. Emotions are part of being female, which is why change would be evident as a woman has never run this country, c'mom, nancy pelosi (d) speaker and hillary its unstoppable.
As a woman I passionately disagree with Gov. Strickland.
Hillary herself has never seemed to hide behind the "it's hard being a woman" thing. She comes out roaring louder than most men, flattering or otherwise. I find it odd that Ohio and even Pennsylvania are so die hard for Clinton when it was NAFTA, the treaty Bill Clinton so enthusiastically rallied for that has cost so many Americans their jobs, especially Ohio and Penn. Furthermore, she supported the war in Iraq, Bush's attempt at avenging his father's legacy... a war that has cost the American people draconianly as there are no longer funds to support medicare/medicaid, education, providing for the elderly or disabled, and she's going to bring universal healthcare? And jobs?
And when she's questioned in any sort of way she just cries fowl and redistributes blame in an oddly Bush-like fashion. She can promise all she wants to whom ever will listen, but it's congress and lobbiest, and insurance companies that will most likely have the final say, and laugh for that matter. If Gov. Strickland was a detractor, rather than supporter, Hillary would rip him to shreds by saying "It's tough
being a woman..." As an Independent WOMAN, if Hil gets the Nom I'm voting for McCain, because no matter how hard he may try, he nor his supporters can play the "gender card"! Honestly, Governer Strickland, you are obviously trying to help this woman, but you end up making Hillary look even more two faced. In my opinion, your support for Hillary will only support McCain in the end. But that's Ok, I can live with McCain (even if he was a woman)!
HILLARY CLINTON WILL BE THE FIRST FEMALE PRESIDENT AND ON OF THE "GREATEST" LEADERS THIS NATION HAS EVER HAD. PLEASE VISIT HER SITE TO LEARN MORE..hillaryclinton.com.
HILLARY ROCKS ! ROCK ON HILLARY !
Give me a break.  Clinton belittles Obama for being "inspirational" and now her surrogates say she has to face a quadruple standard.  The problem for Billary is that the campaign has been run like their studying for the SAT test.  A president needs to know the issues but the Congress has to pass the bills.  If you can't inspire the public, they won't pass anything.

It will be too easy for GOPs in Congress to be anti-Hillary.  They won't be able to do that as easily w/ Obama and his ability to use the bully pulpit.  It's about time the Dems have their own "Great Communicator."  Let's change the map!
We're going to have to give people time to get used to the fact that, though Hillary Clinton is a good Democratic candidate, Barack Obama is a better one.

Hopefully, Ohioans will realize this sooner rather than later (although that their Governor hasn't figured it out, isn't a good sign).

Wah wah wah!
He is correct. She has had to debate Obama with nine fingers tied behind her back. Black people vote for Obama because he his black period. White people vote for both Obama and Clinton based on what they believe. Change or experience. The statistics prove this. When ever the Clintons go after the Obama's, the media implies that they are racists. It does not go the same way when Obama goes after Clinton. They do not say he is sexist. The media is playing a quadruple standard. Reverse discrimination is winning this for Obama. The media is guilty.

By the way, my wife is black and so are my two children.
clinton ridding high by she will fade in the end
Sounds like he'll be a great asset for Hillary during the general election after she mops the floor with Obama and his empty rhetoric!  We love ya Hill!
Are we now playing the sympathy card to get votes for Hillary?  Should we also say it is harder because her husband cheated on her?
