March 4: Ohio and Texas

The Wall Street Journal's Calmes notes that delegates may matter less than perception on March 4. Clinton's "elevation of Ohio and Texas to must-win status may well turn out to be a game-changer for the Democratic race. Instead of a long fight for delegates up to the August convention, which all sides had come to expect after no candidate scored an early knockout, their rivalry may be decided much as nominations have been in past years' contests -- based on perceptions: If Sen. Clinton doesn't win both states, she will be widely perceived to have lost, no matter that neither candidate yet has the needed 2,025 delegates."

Clinton, campaigning in Ohio yesterday, refused to call Ohio a must-win state. (And, by the way, we also find out that Obama's got an anti-NAFTA mailer hitting Clinton in Ohio.) “‘I really don’t think about it like that,’ Clinton told The Dispatch following a 35-minute speech to 2,600 in Ohio State University’s French Field House. ‘I think about doing the very best I can. I’ve got a good campaign here. I’ve got wonderful, broad support across the state and we’re just going to work like crazy to get as many votes as we possibly can and hopefully we’ll do well.’”

“Sharpening her contrasts with Obama, Clinton accused him of misleading Ohio Democrats with a direct-mail piece that misrepresented her position on the North American Free Trade Agreement, signed into law by her husband, former President Bill Clinton. ‘He’s running a campaign where he is obviously taking shots at me,’ Clinton said. ‘He’s got some mailer I’ve heard about here in Ohio, going after me on NAFTA. I wasn’t in the Senate, I didn’t vote on NAFTA. I’ve obviously got a record where I’ve taken on the trade issues time and time again. So we’re going to be drawing comparisons and contrasts.”

Clinton has a new TV ad in Texas up attempting to woo military veterans. "Obama's campaign has yet to unveil a Texas ad on the issue, but an Iowa spot featured a former combat pilot and Air Force veteran endorsing the Illinois senator's anti-war stand. Military and veterans' issues are hot topics in Texas. The state has 25 military installations, and many veterans live in urban areas and South Texas." (But how many of these people are Democratic primary voters?)

The New York Daily News: “Don't cry for Hillary yet: New polls give her edge in crucial contests.”

Also citing those polls, The New York Post: "Do not write Hill obit just yet."

Obama has run a brilliant campaign.  He has not faltered in his thoughts, message, ground game, money raising, campaign management, etc.  He has faced formidable challenges and running mates and has not faltered and has handeled it with grace, poise, honesty and maturity.  Never forget he is not only running against the biggest, most entrenched, nasty, dishonest and meanest political machine in America and is winning!  Obviously he got it RIGHT ON DAY ONE!  The thought and knowledge and skill level he put together in his campaign strategy, hiring of employees etc has all been above board.  His theme and platform has never faltered so give credit where credit is due.  The Clinton's retheric of being ready on day was rings hollow and has been proved wrong.
Question--if its okay for Obama to hit Hillary on an issue that she wasn't in the Senate for, didn't vote for (NAFTA), then chide her for "running around and saying how great it was" (from his GM plant speech)when Pres. Clinton signed it into law...........

Then why isn't it okay for Hillary (and even Pres. Clinton) to chide Obama for running around, supposedly speaking out against the war (though he wasn't in the Senate, didn't vote for, against, or 'present'), but then voting to keep funding it every time?

There were plenty of other people who didn't vote for the war AND didn't vote to fund it.

Because she's claiming that part of her experience comes from her husband's presidency.  You have to take the good with the bad.  You can't cherry pick what experiences you want to claim.
Why is it that Hillary doesn't want to be connected with Bill Clinton's NAFTA however does want his accomplishments and experience.  She wants the best of Clinton but not the worst.  She also wants Bill's connections for Superdelegates and money.  She shouldn't be allowed to have it both ways.
Let's take a closer look at who's really qualified and or who's really working for the good of all of us in the Senate. Obama or Clinton.

Senator Clinton, who has served only one full term - 6yrs. - and another year campaigning, has managed to author and pass into law - 20 - twenty pieces of legislation in her first six years.
These bills can be found on the website of the Library of Congress www.thomas.loc.gov, but to save you trouble, I'll post them here for you.
1. Establish the Kate Mullany National Historic Site.
2. Support the goals and ideals of Better Hearing and Speech Month.
3. Recognize the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.
4. Name courthouse after Thurgood Marshall.
5. Name courthouse after James L. Watson.
6. Name post office after Jonn A. O'Shea.
7. Designate Aug. 7, 2003, as National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
8. Support the goals and ideals of National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
9. Honor the life and legacy of Alexander Hamilton on the bicentennial of his death.
10. Congratulate the Syracuse Univ. Orange Men's Lacrosse Team on winning the championship.
11. Congratulate the Le Moyne College Dolphins Men's Lacrosse Team on winning the championship.
12. Establish the 225th Anniversary of the American Revolution Commemorative Program.
13. Name post office after Sergeant Riayan A. Tejeda.
14. Honor Shirley Chisholm for her service to the nation and express condolences on her death.
15. Honor John J. Downing, Brian Fahey, and Harry Ford, firefighters who lost their lives on duty. Only five of Clinton's bills are, more substantive.
16. Extend period of unemployment assistance to victims of 9/11.
17. Pay for city projects in response to 9/11 18. Assist landmine victims in other countries.
19. Assist family caregivers in accessing affordable respite care.
20. Designate part of the National Forest System in Puerto Rico as protected in the wilderness preservation system.
There you have it, the fact's straight from the Senate Record.
Now, I would post those of Obama's, but the list is too substantive, so I'll mainly categorize.

During the first - 8 - eight years of his elected service he sponsored over 820 bills. He introduced

233 regarding healthcare reform,

125 on poverty and public assistance,

112 crime fighting bills,

97 economic bills,

60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills,

21 ethics reform bills,

15 gun control,

6 veterans affairs and many others.
His first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These inculded **the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 - became law, **The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act, - became law, **The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, passed the Senate, **The 2007 Government Ethics Bill, - became law, **The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill, In committee, and many more.
In all, since entering the U.S. Senate, Senator Obama has written 890 bills and co-sponsored another 1096.
An impressive record, for someone who supposedly has no record according to some who would prefer that this comparison not be made public.
He's not just a talker.
He's a doer.

Pass it on....It's impressive
Poor confused Hillary. She touts her "white house years" as a key to her experience.  Yet when failures of that time is laid bare she claims I was not in the Senate you can not count that against me.( NAFTA) How convenient to claim all the success and none of the failures of her experience. Sounds like George Bush who never admits a mistake. Now is the time for an end to dynastic politics.
This is from Caller.com......

ROBSTOWN -- When Robstown beat out Corpus Christi as the host city for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign rally, many wondered why.

Size? Location? Cost? Hispanic population? The answer depends on whom you ask.

Clinton's Texas spokeswoman Adrienne Elrod said via e-mail Thursday that Robstown's Richard M. Borchard Regional Fairgrounds was chosen because it was big enough to accommodate the large crowd that Clinton would attract and it was available. She would not elaborate.

But an American Bank Center official says the final choice of the Robstown fairgrounds over the Corpus Christi site, which was also available, was based on drawing in the maximum number of Hispanic voters.

"We were told it had nothing to do with cost. It was strictly they were courting the Mexican-American vote and they felt it was stronger down in Robstown," said American Bank Center general manager Marc Solis.

So let me get this straight....
Hillary only went to Robstown because that's where the  Mexican Americans live....

If a republican had said that, they would have been dragged through the mud....
Hillary when you run on the platform of 2 for one thaen you absorb the godd and bad from each.  Sorry Hill but the NAFTA debacle is also on you record.  If you wanted to be judged seperately you should have run on your own.  Once again the Clinton's want it both ways and all ways when it benefits them but not when it diesn't.
For the not so bright lady in Maryland.....Obama couldn't vote against war costs one the war started. Doing so, would put troops at risk. If Clinton hadn't voted so eagerly for the war, Obama wouldn't have to support bills to protect troops that CLinton put in harms way.
So, by this standard, Hillary can't claim her White House stay as experience.  Either she equally claims the failures, disgraces and crises of their previous Administration as she does its accomplishments, or she claims neither.  This is another instance of cherry-picking.  "She's tough, experienced in DC, battle-tested."  She's crying, she's a new direction, the press is picking on her.

BTW, I saw an interview with President Clinton, in which he said he couldn't defend her, but could promote her.  "The press is picking on her" sounds like defending her.  And he has a right to defend his wife, but he shouldn't be saying one thing and doing the other.  Given his past campaign statements, has anyone on the staff clued him in on the invention of recording devices?
Politics of Hope and Change doesn't jibe with his attack piece on NAFTA. Just as his rhetoric doesn't match Obama's voting record.
A response the message above.  Look it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that Hillary supported NAFTA whether she voted for it or not. That is the downside of having Bill as her husband. The difference is Obama called against the war from the start even though he wasn't in the congress but the Clintons are saying that he actually was for the war just like Hillary.  And it’s obvious he was not.  So that is a lie, (same ol' politics right).  Also to all you stupid Hillary supporters he voted to fund the war after it were clear Bush was not going to bring them out.  He felt that if they are going to be there then they must have the best in equipment and things like that to protect themselves. It did not mean he was for the war he was still against it. This is what’s wrong with this race the Clintons are still in this race clearly off of people who are loyal to them Obama is new.  Why can't voters look past the loyalty and really think about there votes.
Obama has been against the Iraq decision since day one plus nobody will hold funding the war against anyone b/c only until the most recent vote...for political reasons did Clinton not vote to fund it (MoveOn.org..the most antiwar group out there supports Obama). The American people have concluded troops must always be funded despite disagreements, it falls on the president to end the war policy. Unfortunately we all know Bush ducked that responsibility completely. How many times must this be repeated for posters like your raider.
Now, Bill was calling Obama a "fairy tale". I think the real fairy tale is NAFTA, which he signed when his wife was the First Lady. If Bill is the frontman for Hillary and he signed into law a bill that has caused this nation to suffer, who wants another Clinton to veto any objection to her hubby's bills.

It's time for a fresh face, fresh ideas and a new man in the oval office. Hillary is too unstable. One day she is saying one thing, and when she sees that the votes are slipping away she will change her mind and try to go with the flow...now that is POLITICS.
Who is she trying to kid?  Not only does Clinton have to win Ohio, Texas, and Pennsylvania, she has to win them BIG to get any sizeable amount of delegates out of them.

If they stay within 5-10%, then Obama wins, even if he gets fewer delegates or fewer votes.  The problem for Clinton is that they are running to be the President of the -United States- of America, not just the "Big States" of America...
Listening to Hillary Clinton gush at her broad base of support with party big shots in Ohio reminds me of simular comments she was making last fall in regard to Maryland.
Maryland is a state where Hillary enjoyed the support of the Governor, both Senators and many other party luminaries.
Supposed broad support among Carholics, working class democrats, women & seniors.
After her defeat there by a 3-2 margin it would appear as though the voters are theones that matter.  Not the big shots.
Obama carried all major demographics other than white women over 60.
I am sure that in the face of this leading indicator she has to be feeling soooo goooood as to sacrifice Wisconsin in favor of shoring up support in Ohio.
Stay tuned.
Of course he should hit her on NAFTA.  She claims the White House as part of her 35 years of experience.  She can't have it both ways.....even though she tries.

I would also like to see more info out there about the terrorists she pushed to be pardoned even though they didn't even apply.  Of course her husband pardoned them.
I don't understand why the media is calling Barack Obama the frontrunner if Clinton's big states are coming in the future.  Not everything has to be defined, particularly during this nomination.
"Obama has run a brilliant campaign" certainly in riding a wave of black racism based on skin color, supported by left wing liberals and the media.

McCain has said Obama is all "platitudes" and "singularly lacking in specifics."   Obama won't debate the issues with Hillary Clinton - he's running and hiding from debates with her because he lacks substance and specifics on the issues.  And he is countering with dishonest personal, cheap shot attacks.

Hillary Clinton is the most qualified for Day One in the White House to be commander-in-chief and be the inspiring leader to make change real with her experience, qualifications and her specific solutions on the issues.
To: All the Sick and twisted Dem's that are tearing this party apart, Keep up the good work! It's working.  I would never vote for a democrat or watch MSNBS/Obama network again.  Signing off for good.  See you in November!  Go McCain!!!!!!!!

Speaking of cherry picking statements.....

Someone still hasn't explained why Obama continued to vote for the war, but was against it.

If it was to support the troops, why then did he start voting against funding last year (you know, when he started running for President)?

And what's the difference between someone who 'eagerly' votes for the war (though I don't agree Clinton was that), or for someone who hesitantly votes for the war?  A yes is a yes, a no is a no.  There's no 'present' allowed.
She can't have it both ways like everyone else is saying. If she is going to use Bill's WH years as experience than she also has to take the bad that comes along with those years of "experience".

The second point is they have made it very clear that Bill will be there to "bounce questions off of" and "to advise". I think we need to take into consideration on who she will be getting advice from.

Don't fear change people...embrace it!

End the Bush Clinton dynasty!
All you Democrats supporting Obama is out of your minds.  He will NEVER WIN THE WHITE HOUSE.  The Republicians will not let him.  Someone should investigate. We don't know the real truth about this man. Is this (Obama wins) a reality or simply dirty politics exploted by republicans. Is repuplican really funding Obama so that they have a weaker democratic candidate? Then, Why so many republican senators endorsing Obama? Also, you silly cult of Obama followers take a look at this:http://www.thecityedition.com/Pages/Archive/Winter08/PDFfiles/2008Election.pdf

I Will Never Vote Obama because it is A Vote For McCain in November 08.
Use common sense! The fact Obama can get everyone together is half of it. He gets people to believe in themself. Everyone expects the government to do everything for us. We as a nation have to change our way of thinking. Use common sense.

OBAMA/CLINTON 08'   THAT IS OUR BEST HOPE TO KEEP THIS THING FROM SINKING
Not much light has been shed on the impact Texas Republicans may have on the Mar. 4 Democratic primary.  With the Republican presidential primary race over for all intents and purposes, and with no competitive statewide primary campaigns on the Republican side, many may cross over to vote in the Democratic primary.  Texas Republicans have been especially stung by criticisms of George W., and would see a return of the Clintons to power as an unconscionable rebuke that they can prevent on Mar. 4.  In this reddest of states, such a protest vote could dwarf even the most powerful of the Democratic constituencies.
OK, Crat3, you obviously haven't been paying attention. Were you under a rock during the past 17 or 18 debates they have already had?  Furthermore, he has agreed to debate her 2 more times by the end of this month - one on 2/21 in Texas and one on 2/26 in Ohio.

Also, how can you say that she is the most qualified on Day 1 when she ran her campaign fund dry and had to loan herself more money?  Is that how she's going to fix our economy?

As far as experience, read the other comments that are listed here.  James G from MI said it best, "You can't cherry pick what experiences you want to claim."
Obama 08
Nill to Hill and Bill. Now that rhymes well. No more Hill-Gate or Bill-Gate scandals in the White House.
Well, Texas is with her too.

I agree that HRC can't have it both ways. I also know that change to how NAFTA is suppose to work will create a cost to the businesses that are sending their services overseas, but if we are suppose be working for a better environment and to be more in tune with the welfare of other countries then we can't short change the countries or the Americans that were layed off who deserve a better quality of life. It looks like another Iraq, Pres. Clinton thought it would stimulate the economy, but we now know there are reprocussion. Life isn't fair to the middle class why should it be fair to business.
Both the candidates are good. Obana is good speaker and no one knows what he can really do. Hillary is good too. I suspect she will be good in solving problems. The main problem for Obama is that US is not ready for a president of a different race yet. People may not tolerate a first lady who is of different color. This will change after 30 years. It is highly propable that Obama will not be allowed to function smoothly as a president and may also find himself framed into some disaster by scheming people around. So my vote for now will go to Hillary.

I haven't heard anything that Obama actually is going to put in. He is a junior congresssman who isn't savvy or experienced enough in politics to lead our country. Hillary is. as is McCain although I think he is too old to be going for president even though I am a white woman over 60 I don't think he should try for president becausehe is now 71 years old. it is not good. Hillary is the most experienced in the ways of politics, she is the most patriotic and has been since her teen and before years. she has always been for america when obama didn't even live here. He is too young. I think he may be okay for the next president but not this one. I am still miffed that our caucus votes don't count as delegates. and florida's either. that is not fair.

Grow up! We are Democrats and should not eat our own.

GO OBAMA!  LOL
I REALLY DON'T CARE FOR EITHER ONE...OBAMA I LIKE AS A PERSON, BUT HE SEEMS LIKE A GLORIFIED MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER...ALWAYS STATING FACTS WE ALREADY KNOW...MUST END A WAR...ECONOMY IS BAD...WE ALL KNOW THAT ...WE WANT TO KNOW HOW YOU WILL FIX IT AND HOW IN THE DEVIL ARE YOU GOING TO PAY FOR IT??? I WORKED WITH GUYS LIKE THIS IN THE PAST ...WANTED ALL THE GLORY AND WERE REALLY LEADING THE CHARGE, BUT NEVER AROUND WHEN IT WAS TIME TO WORK!

HILLARY HAS IQ AND MAYBE THE WILL TO WORK HARD,

FORGET MCCAIN!

I THINK I WILL WRITE IN RON PAUL...THE ONLY ONE WHO ACTUALLY WANTS TO RUN THE COUNTRY BY THE CONSTITUTION

UPSET HOW THE MEDIA ALWAYS PICKS ARE PRESIDENT!
"When Robstown beat out Corpus Christi as the host city for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign rally, many wondered why."

jerry, I feel for your loss
I like both Clinton and Obama and will vote for either of them in the General Election:  1 Thing bugs me about the perception of Obama.  1)Hillary was elected in 2000 in NY, served a full term and than ran for president, Obama was elected to serve Illinois in 2004 and served only 2 years and announced his bid.. A lack of commitment to the voters of Illinois (opportunist).  2) Obama was a state senator in Illinois while Hillary was in the Senate getting the faulty intelligence and voted for authorization.  Obama was a state senator against the war, look up who your state senator is and imagine yourself caring what his or her opinion of the war.  He wasn't in the senate, his opinion back then was irrelevant as mine or yours.
"All you Democrats supporting Obama is out of your minds.  He will NEVER WIN THE WHITE HOUSE.  The Republicians will not let him." -- Hillary Vote08

Are you saying that the Republicans will let Hillary win? Astounding news.
DANTE!!!!!!   YOU BROKE IT DOWN!!  that is an impressive record that most folks dont even recognize exists.  OBAMA UNEXPERIANCED? I THINK NOT   CHANGE IN 08 GET THE CHICKEN HAWKS OUT OF OFFICE!!!!
Hillary claims her years as First Lady as the most essential element of her "35 Years Experience Making Change".  Thus Bill's forceful promotion of NAFTA and Most Favored Nation Trade Status for China are an integral part of her record as well.
I agree with Mr Harmer in Dallas Texas - If we want a democratic in the office - We all should rally around Barack Obama. More than half the country does not want to see a Clinton third term and frankly does not and would vote for McCain over Hillary Clinton. It might seem like a dream, but the party needs both Barack and Hillary, but the polls on overall winning the election favors Obama over McCain, and a defeat for Hillary over McClain.
DANTE!!!!!!   YOU BROKE IT DOWN!!  that is an impressive record that most folks dont even recognize exists.  OBAMA UNEXPERIANCED? I THINK NOT   CHANGE IN 08 GET THE CHICKEN HAWKS OUT OF OFFICE!!!!
Whoever is raider Dem and crat3, oh and Hillary vote 08, ok Obama is winning among WHITE men, not just black people. You should get your story straight. He's winning among white educated people too. Hillary is winning among the poor people and lower educated. If anything she is winning by the women voters voting for her because she is a woman. Obama is winning everyone, not just one demographic group. Oh the ignorance that comes with politics is ridiculous. Obama and Hillary both have experience. At least Obama has a personality and character. Hillary is a cardboard box that thinks inside the lines. Obama thinks outside of the box and goes farther. This whole mess is an embarrassment. People should do their homework before making ignorant statements about elected officials. Obama will beat McCain, Hillary doesn't stand a chance against those conservatives. Obama is winning in the independents as well. Look whatever people want to believe and post is up to them, but hey thanks to our forefathers, America speaks for itself. It has and it will continue. Hillary shows disbelief when she speaks, she is begging the audience. Obama excites his audience. He shows the people that we control the government, not that the government is suppose to control us. He gets people out and voting and excited to take part in their civic duty. COME ON AMERICA, GET REAL, QUIT WITH THE IGNORANCE AND DO YOUR RESEARCH. Obama hasn't changed his stance at all from day one. Hillary will say and do whatever it takes to win the nomination. Obama won't yield for anything. Hes fighting for what he believes in. For the people that don't believe in him, open your heart and your mind. This is 2008!!! Hillary has been part of many hidden agendas. Obama is a politician and sometimes bills are passed. If a war was going on he didn't want to see the soldiers suffer, so him voting to help them out isn't a bad thing. It shows what type of character he possesses. A passionate one. VOTE OBAMA 08 AND LET HIM LEAD US INTO A BETTER COUNTRY!!!!
Not sure the previous writer got his numbers straight, seems like both have an impressive record, check for yourself at the website http://thomas.loc.gov/
Just because YOU have not researched Obama's policies or YOU have not looked into his so-called "unscrutinized" past does not mean that his supporters are dragging their feet as you are.  Ignorance to the issues, particularly when information is readily available, does not legitimately substitute for a truly valid argument.  Have some faith in your fellow Americans, for it just might turn out that they are better informed than you.
Nuance, thank you for that. That was funny. Republicans will stay home if Obama is the nominee, but Hillary they will get out and purposely vote for their nominee that they completely don't believe in. Obama is the only chance at a democratic white house. Are you kidding me? People do your research and get with the program. Don't you see the trend here?
In the event of a brokered democratic convention, here comes the inventor of the internet and crusader of global warming himself, Mr Al Gore.  Yes we can, get behind the Gore train and ride to autumnal victory in the general election.  Can't you feel it in the air, on the wind, in cities & towns everywhere!!  Savior Al to the rescue!!  :)
Hillary has more experience and finesse to win the White House against McCain.
If you BO supporters get smart and encourage him to be VP we'll have the best of both worlds and the White House for the next 16 years.
I am over 60 and think McCain is too old. Remember Regan? He was in the beginning stages of altzheimer's.
Perhaps McCain should be tested to see where he's at.
