Obama camp cries foul over mailer

Posted: Sunday, February 17, 2008 3:34 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan
The Obama campaign today cried foul today over a health-care mailing that the Clinton camp distributed in Wisconsin.

The mailer, which shows a rainbow assortment of young and old Americans, asks: "Barack Obama, Which of these people don't deserve health care?" The line is a play off of Clinton's stump speech, in which she asks rhetorically who should she choose not to give health care to: The single mom? The waitress? The retiree?

On a second page it reads, "Barack Obama's plan says NO WE CAN'T, leaving 15 million people without coverage." It goes on to list bullet points claiming that the plan "wastes billions" and would cost Americans $1,700 per person." Obama has long claimed that his plan would cut costs more than any other's and would cut costs for individuals. But Clinton has seized on his plan's lack of a mandate to say he's not really offering universal health coverage.

The mailing also quotes a line from New York Times' columnist Paul Krugman -- a fierce critic of Obama -- saying that the candidate's claim that he is passing universal health care is "unscrupulous demagoguery from the candidate himself."

Sen. Ted Kennedy, responding to the mailing told reporters in a conference call that he had been fighting for universal health care for 38 years and would not have endorsed Obama if he didn't believe that he wasn't for it or couldn't pass it.

Kennedy also introduced a new line of attack on Clinton, saying that neither she nor her husband were initially for the S-Chip program which he introduced in the Senate with Republican Orrin Hatch after the failure of Clinton's health care plan in 1994.

Kennedy also told reporters that the Clinton campaign was resorting to the same kind of "fear mongering" that had scuttled her own health care plan in 1994 and called for the debate to remain positive.

But he had no answer for why the Obama campaign had also gone negative in their ads about health care and engaged in what some claimed was "fear mongering" as well, by dropping a mailer that had an eerie resemblance to the Harry and Louise ads that were released by drug companies to discredit the Clinton plan in the early 1990s. The ad released by the Obama campaign told them that the Clinton campaign would force them to pay for healthcare.

Kennedy instead responded that it was legitimate to debate the ways to achieve health care -- but not that Obama was against it.

"We've seen this in the past. Carter insisted there was health planning and cost containment. Those are legitimate debates. But what is not legitimate is to undermine the central position of Barack Obama of not being for universal comprehensive health care. That is the distortion… is a misrepresentation and that is fundamentally wrong," he said.

Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle (D), who also was on the call, and has unabashedly attacked Senator Clinton over the past week for not campaigning in the state, added his own line of attack, saying Clinton's style of campaigning in Wisconsin has been to attack Obama rather than talking to voters.

"It reflects how Sen. Clinton has conducted the campaign in Wisconsin. Before she even came to the state she started running negative TV ads which distorted Senator Obama's record," Doyle said.

clintons are shameless family, like Bill did in oval office and now all this shame.
I am ashamed to be a democrat
Can't Obama fight his own battles?  Why does Ted Kennedy have to get involved?  Who will really be running the country if Obama gets elected?
Every four years they whip up this frenzy and we act like some unrestrained sports fans - losing our sense of reason and objectivity while seemingly forgetting the latest session of brazen, puerile, selfish, shortsighted and despairing leadership we just endured. Yes, every election season, same play.

Is it still true today that all peoples deserve their leaders? Do we as a people really deserve public servants who wantonly lie to us? What gives them the courage and conviction to look directly at us and make clearly misleading statements which when they are caught, persist in the untruth clearly in the hope that when said sufficiently enough, a subsumption of the lie into perception emerges to form a new reality that is so strong that sometimes even when the perpetrator recants, the 'believers' march on with their blindfolds on (Remember Saddam and the weapons of mass destruction). Why do we cheerily tolerate the misleading half truths  and lies that they blind us with and their purveyors?

Are we in this mess because Washington lacks ideas and experience? I posit that it is, on the contrary, overflowing with ideas. We are in these dire straits on the guidance of folks with decades and decades of experience. The best of the best are in this land and have churned up solutions and would churn up more at a moment's notice. The question is : Who is best suited to create the atmosphere that would engender and harness our human resources and get us firing on all cylinders? Are we sufficiently sane at this moment to even be objective? Or is the cycle of deceit and rancour about to repeat itself. Are we finally aware enough to demand, with unrelenting  firmness, an accounting of their actions in office?

I believe the Democratic Party have the President the country needs at this time, but it appears to work very hard at losing this election. How do you make a rule that Florida and Michigan delegates would not be seated and now even some who made the ruling want the rules changed in the middle of the game for clearly selfish reasons. Hmm
Well....maybe it is negative but who should be excluded?  Why should some be required to pay and others may opt out? How much more does his plan save the typical American taxpayer vs. hers?

Sorry if I sound negative but the word "almost" doesn't appear in the definition of the word  "universal"....15,000,000 without insurance and nobody required to pay doesn't sound universal to me.
Wisconsin Vote Obama 08!  Hillary has too many flavors of the month, you know like ice cream, one month it's her experience (Vanilla), next month it's ready on day one (Strawberry), next month it's solutions (Rocky Road), next month it's Yes We Will (Butter Pecan).  Senator Obama flavor has alway been 'CHANGE' I'll lovin' it!
why are the clintons so intent on destroying the democratic party if they can't win
A vote for Hillary is a vote for McCain. I know I would not vote for her!
Ok, people, take a chill pill.  Its just politics as usual.  Some of you people really need to seek help immediately.  Get a hobby!!!!
as i quote from all the president's spin "regardless of whether he serves another term in the white house, george w. bush has inflicted a great deal of damage on the American political system". wow! ben fritz got it right.hrc could care less about the party. she lives in and is from spin city. with her half truths and mostly lies she is loading up the republican party with all the free ads they will need
to keep us out of the white house.
Isn't interesting how easy it is for progressive Democrats (or republican trolls) to call Hillary names names (and Bill Clinton to boot).
Hillary is called; calculating, cold, manipulative etc... yet Obama has received 0 negative publicity and has been actively promoted.
Something to think about:
1. When big Media supports a candidate I would worry that the American public and Democrats in particar are being set up.  It has been done too many times before.
2. Is gender bigotry so much easier for Americans to stomach than racism?  It appears so as a woman can be called a bitch, and worse - yet the word nigger is whispered and one 'willie horton' ad raises the spectre of racist fear mongering all too easily. Maybe that is progress for America: A woman can be insulted in public while a black man is off limits and must wait for the racist attacks to come as innuendo.
3. Are the forces which fought the Clinton's tooth and nail so viciously, and have obviously succeeded in painting them in such negative light with the American public, going to quit their fight and embrace Obama once he becomes the Democratic candidate?
I like Obama but I fear that having Hillary demonized is no favor to him or his movement.
Maybe its time for all Democrats to think strategically and for the long term - the neocons, PNAC http://www.newamericancentury.org/statementofprinciples.htm and AIPAC surely have.
Let's think about 8 and 16 years of progress and not lose the election.
ABC (anybody, but clinton)No more Billary scandals in the White House. Favorite bumper sticker "Vote for Monica Lewinsky's boyfriend's wife"
I presently do not have health insurance but it is only because I don't have the money for it. I think Hillary's plan would only make my situation worse. Every American wants health coverage but we don't want someone taking money out of our checks either. I also don't want to be criminalized for not paying for coverage when I don't have money for it. Obama's plan really does provide choice and opportunity. If anything, Hillary needs to provide more details on her proposal from folks like me who really don't want to be penalites for being poor.
hillary is getting desperate desperate desperate. we should all be proud of the history that will be made because for years we will be discussing the slow death of her campaign for the 2008 nomination.

she is like a beast gogin down and down but trying to fight but it almost seems hopeless its actually kinda sad to wacth her campaing fall apart but i will wait for the movie to come out in a year or two after OBAMA is our president. i am more than sure she has already discussed movie and book rights with some one. but heres a title for the film

race to domm a story of the failed clinton 2008 democratic nomination race
Obama needs to be destroyed for bringing in disunity amongst Americans. The sooner it happens, the better for American society. If he carries on, God Bless America!!
Why can't hillary or anyone for that matter be critical of obama's policies? Hillary clinton knows what it takes to fight back and win on the republican front obama has no chance, if he is crying foul with this an losing support as a result he has no chance in hell going up against john and the republican machine he would be burned.
wake up people, where do you think all that money obma has raise, it from the republican. they know if obma win the democration nomination he will never win the the white house.senator clintin has the best health plan by for.this may be your last chance for the next 8 yr. for good health care.
the Clintons just can't come the terms with the 21st Century. Bill was a very effective president in 1990s, but it is clearly time to move beyond that era. The selfishness of the Clintons is now threatening to tear the Democratic party to pieces. The Hillary Clinton campaign had become a malignancy. Let's all please vote for change. Hillary represents the 20th century, but we're so very ready for change. Please work strenuously to stop the spread of the Clinton disease, and vote for change.
Why is it that the Obama campaign can do whatever they want in distorting Senator Clintons record but they cry foul when it happens to them.  Prior to Super Tuesday the Obama campaign sent mailers out claiming that the Clinton Health Care Plan would garnish individual wages, etc etc...Obama is a whiner not a uniter.
How in the world can anyone believe that a "mandated" health insurance law will help anyone besides the health insurance companies, lobbyists and the politicians that vote the law in???  Telling those of us who can't afford insurance that you are fixing our broken system by implementing fines for us if we don't purchase the insurance we already cannot afford, then selling this load of BS as "universal health care" is down right evil.  Hillary is just another corporate schill.  Wake up, America.  Barack may not be perfect, but I will NEVER vote for Hillary.  If Democrats put Hillary up as our candidate, we will have defeated ourselves (once again).
Do citizens actually believe that Senator Kennedy would place his reputation on the line to support Senator Obama on health care policy if he did not have the evidence that Obama is in fact substantial on health care? Have we forgotten Hillary's utter failure to pass even a half-measure on health care in the Clintons' eight years in the WH, years she has claimed as experience in a co-presidency? Hillary's lying mailer is so typical of the Clintons' negative politics. Another eight more years of the Clinton dynasty's manipulation of the American people, of their slime and sleaze and divide in order to keep power with no regard for what is good for the American people? Rise and shine, dear citizens! Let us think for ourselves. Let us turn the page and work together toward the kind of nation we can and should be. No more Monicas. Say hello to the Obamas and their two young daughters.
Obama is all wind. The only reason he talks about Health Care at all is because he tested public opinion using a pr firm not because he worked on the problem.
The Clintonians may ratonalize the campaign's behavior all they want, but the fact is Hillary couldn't win on her ideas and experience so she will attack and destroy whatever it takes to bring her opposition down. Obama has more elected delegates than Clinton and will not be caught without Hillary trying to steal the nomination. Her miserable tactics are the only way she can have a chance. Those blind enough to vote for her simply encourage the viciousness in politics. But even if Hillary steals the nomination it will be a futile effort as she can not win in November. Look at her negatives. They are higher than any candidate for president has ever overcome. She starts out at about 48% of the people who will not vote for her under any circumstances according to recent polls. That means everyone who doesn't outright hate her would have to vote for her to give her a chance of winning. It isn't going to happen. Vote for Hillary in the primaries and get McCain next January. Real smart.
We dont need Hillary in the White house demanding that we buy universal health care. I can see it all now , that the doctors and hospitals wont go for this mandate. She is getting desperate sending a mailer out and lieing about Obama's. I dont have any respect for her at all. Yes We Can!
I can remember the wonderful feeling when Clinton won the 1992 election and became president after 12 years of Reagan and Bush. Now I can look forward to remembering how, in 2008, Clinton destroyed the Democratic Party right when America needed it most.
Is this how Hillary plans on reforming healthcare? By putting out misinformative mailers that distort her opponent's positions? She will do and say anything to be president. After 8 years moping around the real power players in the white house, she still has no idea what this job is really about. It seems she's learned everything that his job shouldn't be about.
I am sick of hearing about health care.  When are they going to talk about rolling back all of the assaults on our civil liberties. I don't really care if I am healthy if I am living in a police state.
Any candidate who will use their child to call up a live national program (The View)and ask them to vote for their parent is scum. How desperate do the clintons have to be to get back into the White House.  Maybe that's why she stuck with him through the scandal that was not a neighborhood scandal--cheating on your wife--but a national scandal that made her look like a fool.  She stuck by the creep because she was planning all along to run for senator and then for president and thought all the women would feel sorry for her and when the time came she would get their vote.  It just shows how long she has been planning to run for president and how devious and conniving she is, never mind the nasty campaign she is running against Obama.
Why isn't this actionable as mail fraud? The Clinton campaign has sent out false information to voters before every primary to date.
Obama is The Savior "I have a set of gifts right now that I think could really move the country forward" "It's my job to offer myself... here's what I think I can do."  The 60 Minute interview.

You decide: http://cosmos.bcst.yahoo.com/up/player/popup/?rn=3906861&cl=6374507&ch=4227541&src=news
Your so funny. If Hillary sends out a mailer that tells the truth about Obama the drunkin nitwit in Mass has to defend his little pupil. Can you imagine what you would be saying about Hillary if Kennedy was calling trying to get her out of a rut. You would be saying "Same old Politics". Gotta have a old time Washington Senator call and-----GET IT?
Kennedy would be better off skipping the liquid lunches and go give his DNA so the poor man in Canada can finally get the press of his pourch for being JFK's(you know the money ticket for all the kennedy's) "LOVE CHILD". Those Kennedy's they walk on water (opps) don't they. I believe him, oh yea, cause he is a man of his word.
Hey have your read they ABC artical about how obama's wonderful sermons are not really his...you are all such little puppies. PANT, PANT, which way do i go,  our new messiah????
Billary...real classy! She hadn't even stepped foot in the state and she is running attack ads. In some ways, that is all she knows how to do and can't help herself, BUT to resort to negativity and fear. Then, she wonders why the American people are for Obama's message of hope, truth and change of this disaster of a democracy!

America, thank you, please continue to turn the page!!

Obama 2008 (and hopefully Edwards is on board with us too)!
Reminds me of New Hampshire and the Clinton mailer that tried to say Obama was weak on womens health and civil rigts issues.
After that one Kate Michelman and the other leaders of Planned Parenthood and NARAL all switched their support from Clinton to Obama because of Clinton's gross distortion of the facts and Obama's long history of 100% support of womens civil rights.
Looks like she is at it again.
Following the Josef Goebbels "big lie" play book.
At least we knew she would do something like this.
Desperate folks do desperate things.
I for one can only hope she demonstrates more class when she suspends her campaign in 17 days or so.
Senator Obama sure cries out when Senator Clinton points out differences.  I think what Obamaites don't get is that Hillarys Health Care plan is to be affordable also and everyone will be able to go to the doctor.  Unlike Senator Obama she will not charge a penalty when you go.  Also, Obama will make small businesses and children have coverage.
I think that Senator Kennedy should tone down his criticism of a fellow Senator and democrat.  He asked Bill to, and than he does it worse.  I am beginning to not like him anymore.
Paul Krugman is a hack posing as an objective journalist/economist.  He's clearly gunning for a job in a Clinton Administration.  The New York Times should be embarrassed to give him their platform.
Ted Kennedy in defending Obama says he has been fighting for UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE FOR 38 YEARS.  Wow.  He should be embarrassed.  He has been tooooooo long in Washington.  What happened in Massachusetts that his constituents have universal health care.  They say it's bad.  I don't get it.  Has he moved from the state?  No wonder Clinton won.  Good for her.
If this mailer is a distortion then the Obama campaign can refute the charges, if not then they are not really interested in arguing points and issues.
Blame game without argumentitive points equals fluff over substance.
"do not look at the man behind the curtain, look at the pretty curtain".
The Wizard of Oz is a political story and is as relevant today as it was when it was written.
Hillary's definition of "universal healthcare" means the government will make you buy health insurance.  The flipside of that is that the government will enforce this "mandate" one way or another (i.e. fines or jail) if you don't buy it.  I don't know about the rest of you, but I think the government makes me do enough already.  She can attack Obama all she wants but the public needs to know what she means by "universal healthcare."
I wish the DIRTY CAMPAIGN of senator obama would quit crying like they are a victim.

Maybe we should send plants (argumenative people) to his rallies and see how he and his supporters like it.
Obama is ALWAYS whining about SOMETHING! Poor guy from somewhere? has a to cry and say boo hoo she said a Meany thang!
I bet McCain will be ever so nice to you BO!!
Why is anyone surprised that PMSNBC and the NY Slimes want another lefty lying sack in the White House?
Russsert has obviously been promised HRC's chief of Staff, which he has been lobbying for with his lapdog attitude toward her and her pimping family for decades.

Fred Fender YOU MUST BE ON A BENDER!
thank you, J. Taylor, Montpelier, Vermont (Sent Sunday, February 17, 2008 4:10 PM)

that email outlines what I, as a newly diagnosed insulin-dependent diabetic, faced in 1986 when I was working for a company that didn't provide health insurance AND I had to buy my own policy with a national insurer...$1000+ premium per month for a single woman, 20-something years old.  That was in 1986.  I'd hate to see the costs now if something happened where I was forced to get insurance on my own again.  Hillary's health plan in 1992 was correctly killed by Congress, and hopefully, this one (a rework of the old plan), IF she should somehow win the election, will never pass or put into effect because our representatives will see the HARM it will cause the American people!

Health care should NOT be legislated!  It's not the "God-given right" that Hillary claims it is.
Excuse me. Where's the "attack" on Obama for sending out a false mailer about Clinton?
Shirlin, you asked if Ted Kennedy would put his reputation on the line? He has a reputation. A negative one. Oh, but remember, too, Obama doesn't want any part of the "old" ways and he won't owe favors. If you think Kennedy be calling to collect, I have some swampland in AZ to sell you!
MJ Granby, why are you trashing Chelsea Clinton? Why don't you trash Michelle Obama who has said pretty controversial remarks? Why don't you trash McCain or Ronmey's kids for being out there? And what about when the Bush daughters were paraded out four years ago? Why doesn't Chelsea have a right to campaign for her mother?  If it were you, would you just sit home?
I can not beleive the lenght that Hillary is going in order to win. How can she face herself after all the negative camgaign she is running against Obama after she loses.  wI can not beleive that anybody in their right mind would vote for this woman. she is goning to make it hard for a democrat to win this electionbecause of her mud slinging. Hillary lose with dignity and don't be a sore loser.
Shame on you Hillary!  I am a Democrat and if you do get nominated, you do so by lies and negative attacks, I will cast my vote to Republicans to help this country defeat you, a evil low life politician!

Shame Shame Shame!!!
John Q. Charlotte, NC
I like your rational, even though it is quite dumb. How do you force someone who can't afford something in the first place to buy that thing they can't afford. if you already have great insurance, then good for you. What about the teller at the bank, or the waiter serving you food, or the clerk at the mom and pop shop. You may not know this but there are a lot of them. Now you gonna force them to pay fines, after forcing them to pay higher taxes from their never-increasing wages. Think people. You will not like this mandate after you elect her. Her plan will cost you more than you can imagine. One other thing to note is this: As long as you buy insurance, she will be happy, even if it barely covers anything. In other words, you will be shelling out money from your paycheck every month, but when you get sick, you will still have to pay out of your nose for your medical. I have great insurance right now, but her plan blows big time.
