Bill spars with Obama supporter

Posted: Sunday, February 17, 2008 5:21 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli
CANTON, OH -- Robert Holeman came to Timken High School here today with a message to deliver to Bill Clinton. He did -- and he said the former president wasn’t happy about it.

Clinton spoke to a capacity crowd in this Northeast Ohio town, the third of five events today in the Buckeye State. He told voters that the contest was “the power of speeches against the promise of solutions by a world-class change maker.”

Throughout the event, as Clinton made his case for his wife, Holeman’s dissenting voice could be heard. At times he simply shouted Obama’s name. When Clinton would set up a sure applause line, Holeman could be heard heckling. As soon as Clinton finished speaking, the Canton native made a beeline to the ropeline to give Clinton a piece of his mind.

“I asked the president to please stop the bickering between the campaigns,” Holeman said in an interview afterwards. “All this name calling is like the bully in the yard. He can’t get his way, he can’t get nothing done.” Holeman said he thought Clinton was “gasping for air.”

“This is the last hurrah. After March 4, Hillary Clinton will be out of the race for good, and Obama will take the commanding lead,” he said. “She should back him with her delegates immediately. That’s what I’m asking them to do.”

Holeman said that Clinton responded by saying Obama came after him first. Holeman also described Clinton’s reaction to him as “irate.”

“I think he even hit me in the face with his hand,” he said. “He did give me a little pop. It was okay, because I understand his tenacity for his wife.” Clinton did engage Holeman for a few minutes, at times pointing directly at him. It was unclear whether he did make physical contact, however.

Holeman said he did support Bill Clinton during his campaigns, but that now the country wants a “new perspective.” “I think the president’s trying hoodwink us, bamboozle us, put us back in the okie doke,” he said. “He had eight years to do what he was supposed to do. All the things he said that she’s gonna do, he had the same authority that he wants her to have. Now if one Clinton, the male Clinton can’t get it done, how is Ms. Clinton [going to].”

Several Clinton supporters who saw the exchange came up to Holeman after to -- shall we say delicately -- express their disapproval for his actions. More negativity, Holeman said. “Hillary Clinton has started the most negative campaign I have ever seen, other than what the Republicans can launch,” he said. “I think we need to come together on those issues.”

*** UPDATE *** Obama spokesperson Ben LaBolt said Holeman was "absolutely not" a plant by the campaign. And a spokesperson for President Clinton who was near the president said there was no physical contact.

Obama's people are so rude. Is this the "change" obama keeps talkin about?
It is not "Obama's people" who are doing this. One guy decided to do this on his own. I was called an very vulgar name by a Clinton supporter simply for having an Obama sticker on the window of my car. Guess I should make judgments about all Clinton supporters based on that one incident, by the above poster's logic.
I recently changed my support from Hillary to Obama; even though, I had been blogging for her for several months.

Me and my family used to be the biggest fans of Bill Clinton. Everyone in my community can't stand to see Bill on TV anymore.  I’m not sure if its his older age or maybe the lack of sleep lately, but I truly believe his lost his mind.  He makes no sense anymore, cares about nothing other than attempting to get his wife elected, plucks words right out of the air while stating nothing, and now even goes against the voices of mass voters...

Bill Clinton is really not he same person I USED to respect and admire!

This country needs straight shooters.  Vote for anybody but the Clinton Fabricators....Obama first, if not, then McCain!
Way to go Robert Holeman- great job painting Obama's supporters as ranting lunatics.
whywould abama send someone to a clinton speech and hackle mr clinton. i dont blame him for geting upset it was no place for such an approach. i think ms clinton should come out with more than what she has about obama . who is he? where did he come from wont sulute the flag not place his hand on the bible.if he is an american (as he claims) what wrong with this country? I thought he had to be born here to run for president am i wrong?
Why do Obama's people ALWAYS cause trouble! They are the rudest bloggers I have every witnessed. Their negativity is scary! I am so tired of ALL the anger from them!
I'm a strong Obama supporter, and I agree that his approach was not the most agreeable or appropriate one. The point is to talk, not heckle. Bill Clinton deserves his chance to speak, and most Obama supporters realize that. I would appreciate if we could hold back a few of our generalizations about each side of this debate, in favor of the more complex realities. We're all fighting for the same thing here. We're going to have to come together after August. Let's not be too wounded by that time to make amends.
This is another of the Clinton agitpropsters.  That's not an Obama person; that's a Clinton person paid to make Obama supporters look bad.  Those phrases ("hoodwink us," "bamboozle us," "the okie doke") are taken by the Clinton campaign to malign Obama's transcendent message.  They're supposed to remind people of Malcolm X who used them in the 60s and to connect them with Obama who mentioned them, separately, in different venues in South Carolina.  This is the same game they played in NH with the "Iron My Shirt" man: he was a radio personality called up from Boston by Michael Whouley to engender sympathy for the Borg Queen.
Don't stereotype all of us John in LA, it's those sort of sweeping characterizations are indicative of the "change" thats needed. And it's not like Bill Clinton has been exactly nice this campaign season either.
The Clintons had their "lackies" attack Obama earlier in the campaign and Hillary launched an negative ad against Obama over "debates" when he agreed to an additional two earlier in the month (which he didn't need to do as the new frontrunner). I regret this lone supporter's actions but I think it is unfair to say this is how Obama works, it is actually more indicative of the Clinton machine.
stinks like desperation, clintons!  good riddance.  also, free speech isn't rude.  a former PRESIDENT slapping at a voter is.
Typical behavior for Obama supporters.
Obama is for change. He doesnt want to force health care on you. He wants you to have a choice. That what america is about the freedom of choice. He has a mandate for health care for kids which is no brainer until there 24 or 25. Their healthcare plan are 95% the same. Dont believe the hype vote obama.
Clinton delegates voting for Obama??  Well maybe...but I can guarantee you that Barack Obama cannot and will not get enough of Hillary Clinton general election votes to win the presidency.  I have voted Democrat all of my life which includes five presidential elections and I am very proud for having done so!  But I will NEVER NEVER vote for Barack Obama!  And I can guarantee you that there are millions of Democrats who feel the way that I do!  Even if this means dealing with John McCain for the next four years.  I urge every Hillary supporter that if Hillary does not get the nomination to vote for John McCain!
Shame on you Bill and Hillary Clinton. It is now obvious that this couple would do anything to become presidents again, even if it divides their party forever.
I just have a feeling they will at one point face a major public humiliation, like they had in the Lewinsky case.
This is America's Most Shameless Couple !
This guy sounds like a nut.  I have noticed Obama's inability to unite.  He instigates, instead.
Sometimes it takes a little "rudeness" to get the sheep to move in the same direction. You think Obama is responsible for each stray lamb that trods the unbeaten path?
Oh, PLEASE.  Both parties need to stop bickering, for sure.  This is the dems’ race to LOSE.  Let’s not go that way, PLEASE.  For the love of this country, start talking, stop fighting, PLEASE.  We can’t afford any more hopeless years.

HOPE is what we need now.

And Clinton's people really know how to stereotype john.
This guy needs to learn some respect. Sorry, I don't care what you think of Bill or Hillary, they deserve a lot of our respect for their service over the years and this is just childish. But, as a resident of Ohio, I am used to this kind of person that maybe the rest of the country doesn't have to put up with.
President Bill Clintons's security team should have throw that idiot out on his ear. He got his 15 minutes, now he can go back to being a nobody. All of Obama's supporters are rude , belligerent, and uncouth.
Oh please don't blame this on Obama or those who vote for him.

Just understand the man's passion and continue to support your candidate.

They both have a hill to climb.  Neither have a clear path to the presidency and both will have a serious fight to get to the white house.

Let's just support them and let those who still have yet to vote, vote.

John in la,

You should never try to create some sort of stereotype by saying "Obama's people" like we are all one in the same.  We are a very diverse coalition of people who want change, and don't want some old Washington insiders to tell us how it needs to be done.

Do I condone what Robert Holeman did?  NO!  But, I also don't agree with what Bill Clinton is doing either.  If his goal was to totally divide the Democratic Party, then Bill and Hillary have succeeded.  I only hope that we can come together in November with a shared vision so that McCain and his "100 year war" do not win.
This is no longer a "soap opera", it's a CARTOON!

May God help the dems...(IF there is a video of the exchange, that video will be everywhere!) Imagine..Bill traveling the WORLD representing the US! Is THAT the America YOU want showcased?
Obama is cashing in on the White Guilt that has been pumped up in this country for decades by the schools and the infotainment media.
I think the change Obama wants is a President that doesnt hit kids
Unfortunately, as a former New Yorker and Hillary supporter living in Chicago I encounter numerous un-provoked hostile and rude Obama fans quite frequently when I wear my Hillary button out. I always respond by simply saying I have respect for Obama and for his supporters right to back him, I just have made a different choice. I am typically called either a racist, an idiot, or much worse. The irony is that the standard argument they sneeringly bark at me is that he inspires in them a desire for positivity and unity.
This story does not surprise me in the least.
Bill Clinton and John McCain both have a short temper.
I am an Obama supporter, and I agree that what that guy did was really rude. Heckling is obnoxious, and stunts like that can turn off undecided voters.

But don't use one stupid guy to make a sweeping generalization that all of  "Obama's people are so rude." That's just silly and illogical. Certainly I find examples of rudeness from both camps on internet comment areas like thia.
This guy is a hero. The brown shirted Hillbots couldn't even shut him up! I love it!
"obama's people are so rude"
How can you lump millions of people into one description?  Grow up.
Cultists like Obama supporters seem to be losing their minds all over.
I'll file this one under "Consider the Source" (Holeman, not NBC News) until there's video evidence.
What this person did was rude, for sure...but I would not automatically jump to the conclusion that this was an Obama supporter.  Obama is running on inclusion and unity...not exclusion and division.  I also would not put it past the Clinton's to have put this person up to this to say that this was an Obama supporter...Obama is trying to stay above the fray...but running against the Clintons make it hard...because these are the type of tactics they stoop to...with them ALL's FAIR...I was a Clinton supporter...but I do not like their tactics!!!  As Obama said, with them...it is business as usual!!!  What solutions have they offered...??? no more than what Obama is offering...theirs is different...but not by much...but they know, no matter what the candidates say now...it really isn't up to them...it is up to the Senate and Congress...but without bringing both parties together, nothing will get done.  I see Obama trying to do that more than the Clintons (and I do mean the CLINTONS)...at this point all I see the Clintons doing is the same old, same old.  Also, regarding each candidates health care plan...why hasn't someone simply stated...under the Clinton proposal of Universal Health Care for ALL...she means it will be MANDATORY...it will cover all...because she will MAKE you have it...whereas Obama is simply stating that he proposes Universal Health Care for ALL also...but he will not make it Mandatory...if you want it...you can get it...but if you choose not, then you don't have to take it...however, if you don't, then you will pay the consequences if something happens and you need it but chose not to take it...this is not rocket science folks!!!
I agree with Fernando Garza of Laredo, TX.  If Clinton wins I'm voting for McCain in the November elections.  I used to love the Clintons and now can't stand the site of them.  They have really shown their underbelly over the past few months.

And to Lee of Chicago, IL.  I believe you fabricated that whole story.  I'm from Chicago also and we don't lambaste Hillary supporters.  We don't even swear at the Bush fans here.  We might roll our eyes but mostly we just let them and you be in your own little world of disbelief.

Vote Obama!
Wow!  It appears the democrats are finally seeing Bill Clinton for what he really is.  Took the rose colored glasses off, huh?  He's a power hungry, pathological lair that wouldn't know the truth if it bit him.  Ditto for the little woman.
The Clintons are absolutely NO different than they ever were.  It's just that now some Liberals are seeing them as clearly as the Right Wing Kabal saw them 15 years ago.  Welcome to the Real World, enjoy the view.

Reads to me that all demoncrats for obama or clinton are high school age brats wanting to have the government "change" their diapers, wipe there noses and assure them the big scary world will not hurt them if they all become fascists, marxists and socialists all of the same. Let's trash the Constitution, give all of money to mother government and pay for everybody's housing that can't add 2 + 2.
I have see the obama meaness right here in North Carolina, I was in the parking lot and saw a man about 75 with a Hillary sign on his car, I watched a big guy start screaming at this elderly man about the sticker on his car. If this is change, I'm moving to another country, because I do not want to have to deal with this kind of movement.
What a bunch of pansies.  We're fighting a war against a 7th Century, misogynistic theology that threatens to send us back into the dark ages, and Clinton and Obama supporters are whining at each other over which group is "meaner"?

Thank goodness President George W. Bush has taken the fight to the enemy (no domestic Islamofascists attacks on America since 9/11), helped our economy get over the Clinton/Gore recession of 2000 (so much so that unemployment is still at 5%, which is essentially full employment), and a President who has regained honor in the White House after the semen-stained Presidency of Paula Jone's attacker.

Guess you should tell Bill Clinton to "put some ice on it".
I guess being rude and trying to shout down others' opinions is part of the change that the Obama cult favors. He doesn't have any concrete plans, has no real experience... he just relies on his empty platitudes and speeches about "change for hope" and "hoping for change", and the simple-minded folk that fall for his 'image' are now, like members of any cult, going to do irrational things to get their 'messiah' into power.

Obama supporters: think for yourself and GROW UP!
A sign of desperation in the Obama-camp.

Obama is so polarizing, and his supporters are real haters!

Hillary 08!!!
Couldn't the headline have read, "Clinton responds to Oboma heckler?"

I mean, it could have. Attacks? Did that happen? Interesting choices made at MSNBC.
The heckler was probably a Clinton plant. At any rate, BOTH sides will have passionate supporters that will blur the lines of passion and rudeness. You can't dictate what "free " people want to say. It IS their right to do do.
Obama supporter no doubt about it. Matbe a plant. Talk about DIRTY POLITICS.

Clinton supporters DEMANAD an Apology from OBAMA
I hope Obama people will change and become more supportive of Hillary.  It is time for them to stop the hate and vicious attacks on the Clintons and vote for REAL CHANGE!  They must stop the koolaid guzzle and wake up with hope in their hearts for an experienced president.  Senator Clinton the best choice for change and experience!
I don't see how anyone can respect or support Hillary Clinton. After the way Bill treated her during his administration, any self-respecting woman would have divorced him. In my opinion, the only reason she stayed with him is because she is not strong enough to win the nomination on her own. Her move was a very calculating one and it makes me wonder who will be in charge if she is elected.
I am a Hillary supporter who lives in Arkansas.  I was at a dinner party Valentine's Day, and without exception all those democrats at that dinner expressed that even though they are "yellow-dog democrats" they will not vote for Obama.  Some said they just probably will not vote.  I realize this is the south (and Arkansas gave Hillary 70% vote over Obama on Super Tuesday), but I think this is very telling.  The white men in the group, who the press say are supporting Obama, all had voted for Hillary.  But, I might add, we were all "over 60" and white.  I believe McCain will be the next president if Obama is the nominee.
