Bill spars with Obama supporter

Posted: Sunday, February 17, 2008 5:21 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli
CANTON, OH -- Robert Holeman came to Timken High School here today with a message to deliver to Bill Clinton. He did -- and he said the former president wasn’t happy about it.

Clinton spoke to a capacity crowd in this Northeast Ohio town, the third of five events today in the Buckeye State. He told voters that the contest was “the power of speeches against the promise of solutions by a world-class change maker.”

Throughout the event, as Clinton made his case for his wife, Holeman’s dissenting voice could be heard. At times he simply shouted Obama’s name. When Clinton would set up a sure applause line, Holeman could be heard heckling. As soon as Clinton finished speaking, the Canton native made a beeline to the ropeline to give Clinton a piece of his mind.

“I asked the president to please stop the bickering between the campaigns,” Holeman said in an interview afterwards. “All this name calling is like the bully in the yard. He can’t get his way, he can’t get nothing done.” Holeman said he thought Clinton was “gasping for air.”

“This is the last hurrah. After March 4, Hillary Clinton will be out of the race for good, and Obama will take the commanding lead,” he said. “She should back him with her delegates immediately. That’s what I’m asking them to do.”

Holeman said that Clinton responded by saying Obama came after him first. Holeman also described Clinton’s reaction to him as “irate.”

“I think he even hit me in the face with his hand,” he said. “He did give me a little pop. It was okay, because I understand his tenacity for his wife.” Clinton did engage Holeman for a few minutes, at times pointing directly at him. It was unclear whether he did make physical contact, however.

Holeman said he did support Bill Clinton during his campaigns, but that now the country wants a “new perspective.” “I think the president’s trying hoodwink us, bamboozle us, put us back in the okie doke,” he said. “He had eight years to do what he was supposed to do. All the things he said that she’s gonna do, he had the same authority that he wants her to have. Now if one Clinton, the male Clinton can’t get it done, how is Ms. Clinton [going to].”

Several Clinton supporters who saw the exchange came up to Holeman after to -- shall we say delicately -- express their disapproval for his actions. More negativity, Holeman said. “Hillary Clinton has started the most negative campaign I have ever seen, other than what the Republicans can launch,” he said. “I think we need to come together on those issues.”

*** UPDATE *** Obama spokesperson Ben LaBolt said Holeman was "absolutely not" a plant by the campaign. And a spokesperson for President Clinton who was near the president said there was no physical contact.

I hope Obama people will change and become more supportive of Hillary.  It is time for them to stop the hate and vicious attacks on the Clintons and vote for REAL CHANGE!  They must stop the koolaid guzzle and wake up with hope in their hearts for an experienced president.  Senator Clinton the best choice for change and experience!
This race is the best campaign fodder for the Republicans ever.  So Hilary goes down fragmenting the party and making Obama appear even farther left.  Many of her supporters that are moderate will surge towards McCain.  That, combined with the other democrats that will not vote for Obama because of his race or inexperience will result in a landslide McCain victory.
who in their right mind would feel the need to vote based on race? for all the white's that feel guilt, hope it work's for you, I feel no need to vote for anyone based on race. gender,I will vote for the person who is best to run this country and get us out of a war debt and find a way to help all people get insured, and stop losing our homes, if american is to survive. If you bully anyone for their choice then we should just lock up american and kiss our a** good-bye
The cult of Obama is alive and well.  Though I support Clinton, I am glad that many Obama supporters recognize that this is not the way to go about ones business.  What is interesting is that MSNBC spun this story as if it were yet another example of Clinton ineptitude.  On Morning Joe, the talking heads more or less admitted (although I am sure they would spin this too) that they were not being objective about Obama.  Hillary is better on the issues, and that is what matters to me.
OK, All of this discussion about Barack Hussein Obama being a "Uniter", or "Shepherd" is garbage. He is a rabble-rouser, and nothing more. All he has managed to do in his presidential campaign is to instigate class warfare, and I would not be surprised if he planted this political agitator himself. His rhetorical speeches are repititive, and catchy, yet he doesn't officially have a stance on anything except he is against the Iraq War. People, if you are thinking seriously about backing an inexperienced fool like this man, you really need to take a look in the mirror, and ask yourself what is wrong with you...
It is ridiculous this guy got any attention at all. That is all he was after. Although I will not lump all Obamam supporter into rude and nasty, a lot on these blogs and in at Dem gathering are. They are pushy and demeaning with a my way or the highway attitude toward everyone who does not agree Obama is the best thing since sliced bread.
Robert Holeman comes off a savvy, careful speaker. The article is dense with potent lines: Clinton "gasping for air" and "I think he even hit me in the face." Hit?! Oh, you only THINK he hit you. In the FACE.
It isn't clear at all from the piece whether Mr. Holeman is an "Obama Person," yet I do wonder what line of his work is.
reading lines like the following crack me up:
"Bill Clinton is really not he same person I USED to respect and admire!"
Bill and Hillary are the EXACT same people they always have been..it's just that now it is a fellow Democrat standing in their way of what they want, and they are treating him the same way as anyone else that has ever opposed them.
it's funny to see Democrats seeing the Clintons in a new light when they are ripping another Democrat, and being shocked. Just wait to you see what the Clinton's do if the race isn't decided after the PA primary. You have only begin to see ugly from the Clinton's.
Republicans aren't seeing anything new out of the Clintons here

Bottom line...  Clinton is willing to Cheat to win!   What ever happen to rules “Hillary?” The Clintons only believe in the American peoples when it’s in her favor, same ole Clinton sneakiness and deceptiveness. And to reveal how much she loves the American people, if her numbers aren't up in your state, hell.... She leaves early and dismisses you as irrelevant.  Oh, and by the way, Hillary’s so called campaign shake-up, she brought in all of her old ass 1992 "Conspirators" who are well versed in cover -ups. A Kansas City native, Williams, 53, was a central player in the Clinton damage-control machine during the White House years. In 1995, a uniformed Secret Service officer swore under oath he saw her leave White House lawyer and Hillary confidant Vince Foster's office carrying documents after Foster committed suicide. Williams denied it. She ran up more than $100,000 in legal bills defending Hillary in various investigations
Clinton has a habit of pointing his finger at someone so he may have inadvertently jabbed the guy's face. Remember: "I never had sex with that woman"? Well, Bill ponted his finger in America's face then too.
I voted for Hillary here in California but it looks as if Obama is going to run away with the nomination and I'll support him. Hillary's going down. There's several things I don't like about either of them  and the main one is that neither will really end our involvement in Iraq and they're not being truthful about that. We'll be involved there for decades. Sure, combat troops may come home and those left behind will be called something else. When they get in trouble, Obama nor Clinton have refused to say whether they'll send combat troops back to suppport those left behind or pull everyone out. That bothers me and it should pop red flags for everyone who really wants this war over and done with.
Neither Obama or Hillary support gay marriage either. You don't tell a minority that you support their equal rights BUT ... Blacks and women wouldn't stand for it BUT when it comes to Gays and Lesbians, it's a different story.
Hillary should also release her tax returns. There's a bad smell when she refuses to do so.
Obama should come clean about his long-standing relationship with Rezko too. The press has given him a free ride about it and he lied when he said he only knew him for a short time.
Lastly, Bill should have shut his mouth and not upstaged his wife's campaign. It's too late now. The damage is done and I wouldn't be surprised if when this is over, there's a divorce looming.
Bill Clinton is a has-been, a criminal, he's irrelevant and he's not the statesman he thinks he is.  He's not God's gift to women, either, as he thinks.  He's only promoting Hillary because she caught him with the goods and is making him pay now.

If everyone would just ignore the guy, he might just go away.  No conscience, no class, no character, no couth.

He and Hillary are ruining the Democrat party.  She's behind and realizes the writing's on the wall so now she's trying to change the rules of engagement.  If you're behind, you try to debate the leader at every opportunity.  If you can't win by playing by the rules, change the rules.

Deny, deny, deny.  Attack the messenger.  Blame your failings on a vast rightwing conspiracy. Oops!  It's not the right wing this time who's throwing hurdles in her path: it's her own party members.

We cannot allow the Clinton crooks back in the White House.  That would not be change. It would be politics as usual and we're tired of that.  Scandals, crook pardons, employee abuses and harrassment, lies, distortions, back door tactics, illegal donations, trashy behaviour.  That's what we had with eight years of the Clintons in the White House.

If the Clintons are such great politicians, why weren't the country's problems solved during their eight years at the helm?  They had their chance, they blew it, now get out of the way and let someone else try.

Hillary, release your tax records and all other documents from the Clinton Library.  We need full disclosure and complete transparency.  What are you hiding?
Has anyone read the update?  Give it a try before you make a statement for or against Obama and Clinton.
*** UPDATE *** Obama spokesperson Ben LaBolt said Holeman was "absolutely not" a plant by the campaign. And a spokesperson for President Clinton who was near the president said there was no physical contact.
I was there and I remember this guy. I sincerely hope this individual is not representative of the rest of Obama's supporters. Furthermore, do you know what would happen if someone went to an Obama rally and started shouting 'Clinton!' after everything he said? I shudder to think. There is a right way, and there is a wrong way, to get your message across. And claiming that Bill Clinton "hit me in the face with his hand" is definitely the wrong way. I saw Holeman--a 61-year-old Clinton would not have 'hit' him. Surely we know the Secret Service would have seen to it that Holeman never got even remotely close enough to him for that.

Truly if this is a representative sample of Obama supporters I shudder to think what might happen if he wins the nomination and loses to McCain. Will there be rioting in the streets? Will it all be blamed on race? Or will people look to people like Holeman and realize that maybe--just maybe--if they conducted themselves with a little more professionalism and maturity they might have actually won.
I am a Life Long Democrat. This time if the Obama gets nomination, my vote with whole of my family (almost 35 of us) will go to John McCain. Mr. Obama reminds me of Hitler. Democrats will loose big if they nominate Mr. Obama .
I, too consider the source.  Where is the video to back this up?  President Clinton is always surrounded by Secret Service.  This guy could have never gotten close enough for Bill Clinton to touch him.  If he did, President has a right to protect himself.  There are nuts everywhere.
Doesn’t Bill Clinton does a great imitation of Boston Legal's Denny Crane - Puffy, Stuffy, Pompous, Narcissistic Womanizer.
Holeman stated:
"All the things he said that she’s gonna do, he had the same authority that he wants her to have. Now if one Clinton, the male Clinton can’t get it done, how is Ms. Clinton [going to]."

Why doesn't someone ask Obama the same question?  He speaks very eloquently, however I haven't heard ANY substance or plan behind HOW he plans to accomplish everything he talks about.  He can fill a crowd with hope like a preacher preaching fire and brimstone, but will produce a workable plan to be reviewed by economists, scientists, etc?   Until he does, it's just hot air and politicking..
Let me start off by saying I'm a conservative and live in Chicago. That's right a conservative in the liberal I mean windy city. I've asked my liberal friends what he has done for IL, and I'm still waiting for an answer. So the guy can speak wow that makes him a presidential candidate, let me get in line, he has Oprah, or where can I sign up, he has hollywood, or he must be a star. Just because someone can speak that shouldn't be a qualification for becoming president, a president should be able to speak I don't know what happened to our guy GW. All I have to say is the man doesn't understand world politics and the fact that there are radicals that would like nothing more then to harm this country. Lets withdraw our troops, and peace will be come and we won't have to worry again because were appeasing them, drink some more koolaid, you would be foolish to think this. These people attacked us numerous times before we went to Iraq. Lets get rid of our nuclear weapons and what have they been oh that's right they are deterrents.
How sad for poor Bubba. He turns purple. He wags his finger. He curls his lips. But for the first time since '92, no one's buying it. Feel his pain.

Oh, for the good old days of the rotten 90s, when Secret Service agents instantly pounced any serf who dared ask Bubba inconvenient questions.

Hillary? Time will tell. Yeah, it doesn't look good. But bubba was called the Comeback Kid after CBS lickspittles resurected his sinking '92 campaign, and no one believed Hillary would run for Senate, let alone win. But she did. Now no one believes she'll become president.

Perhaps they're right. Do they forget that communists will do anything to gain their ends?

What do you expect! Bill Clinton is a low class women abuser who ought to sent out to pasture with his sort of wife.......
I'm voting for McCain this time around, the only one with proven track record to work with R's and Ds to get things done even if it's against his own party.
I read this in one of the responses:
"Obama's transcendent message".

I can tell you I am no Clinton fan, either of them...

But other than the word Change, what substance have you ever heard in any Obama speech.

I can tell you none. Why? Because he can't, if any of you bothered to go to his official website and actually read what he promises you would know he can't say that out loud and have people get it on camera. He is a socialist, it is that simpe and he knows if he goes into detail int he media he will get hammered. Plus the republicans would use his own spoken words against him in any election.

I am fully ready for a woman or african american to be president, but not a socialist.
GIVE ME A BREAK!! People are so ignorant - do any of you really think that there is any real difference between the way these two candidates campaign? Of course the Clintons will do anything they can to get into the white house just as Obama, McCain and Huckabee will do. Any and all of you on these posts who say "the Clintons did this" or the "Obamas did that" need to get a grip. This is American politics and it's ugly, it's deceitful and it's reality. Personally, I'd like to see someone other than a Bush or Clinton in the white house after the last 20 years, but it doesn't mean for one second  that I believe Obama, Clinton or anyone wouldn't stoop to anything to get the nomination. Wake up folks and stop pointing fingers - you can't accuse one candidate of something and not think for one second that the other candidates aren't doing the same thing.
Not only do we not know what Obama really stands for, no one has any idea of who and what will be swept into power on his coat tails through appointments and associations should he be elected. The wacko in your story is just one example.  Obama has no control, nor the ability to control the folks who have glomed onto his run.

Will Code Pink play a prominant role in his administration?  Will he replace Federal Prosecutors? Exactly what are his positons on Cuba? Kyoto? Kosovo? Immigration?

Would you willingly turn your child over to a four year long blind date with a seemingly nice guy you know literally nothing about?

Hillary has positons on all these matters.  We know what we will get with a Clinton Administration.  Obama, with no experience, no track record, has only words...and four years is too long to trust someone with no track record.
Obama, Clinton, in one respect, there is very little difference, they are both arrogant and rude.  Otherwise, she is an evil, scheming shrew and he is a closet racist with little political
experience.  ...And John McCain is just an angry old man.  I don't know why anybody would support any of them.  This will be a pointless election followed by four years of decline.  No matter who wins, we are all screwed.
Maybe I am naïve, juxtapose these two ideas:
Candidates speak at length about being ‘Most Humane’ or ‘Most for the People’

And

Candidates who are actually ‘Most Virtual’ and ‘Most ego’

It seems that more than ever before we are settling for the lesser of the evils
The man was an insufferable childish toad and probably a complete leftist ass of long standing. Why the Secret Service didn't extract him is another matter. This unfortunate matter is this race in the Democratic party shows the danger of both their identity politics and their overwhelming need for a cult of personality. Both Obama and Hillary are identities who have nothing of note in their histories to indicate any greatness or ability.

A unemotionally tainted analysis of both what Obama and Hillary's say show a doctrinaire rigidity with a insubstantial gloss of substance over a surreal and illogical world view that promises a collection of programs that will only enslave the main of productive Americans to the simple minded whims of the Nanny state and its minions.
Bill Clinton is surrounded by Secret Service at all times. This guy could have never gotten close enough for Bill to touch him. If he did, shame on the Secret Service.  I am still awaiting any video of this.  If it really happened, then there would be video, because the networks have video of everything that Bill Clinton does.
Mr. Holeman raises a critical issue that Bubba never responds to.  The Democratic Party need change and Mr. Obama represents the best candidate for change.  Bubba had his eight years of opportunity and came up empty.  Now that someone else has stepped up to the plate to take a swing at change Bubba goes berserk.  Give it up Hillary.  You had your chance and you muffed it.  Admit it, accept it, and work to heal the Party, and work for change while you still have your Senate seat.  All of Bubba's words and all of Bubba's anger can't put another Clinton in the Whitel House again.  Porque no te callas, Senor Clinton?
The Political Pledge for a Restored Constitution

I will NOT vote for ANY Republican or ANY Democrat for ANY office EVER again!

It is time for us to deny these betrayers of the Constitution any further power over our lives.

They have proven beyond any doubt that their actions and their votes do not represent the will of The People!

           ---------- Take the Pledge! ----------

I pray that the country awakens and realizes we are on the way to socialism with Hillary/Bill and Obama. It saddens me that a country of strong vibrant people who once wanted freedom is so willing to relinquish that freedom for a government that promises everything and delivers bondage to governmental handouts.
Ive listened to Obama - its all slogans. I wish he would be something more than a politician, but I see nothing with firm conviction. Theres no meat in that sandwich.

Hillarys from hell, McCain is an absolute nightmare.

Until Obama shows he has some ballz to do something good for this country against the powers that be, Ill be writing in Ron Paul.

To anything we really need, he is going to have to go squarely against them - He isnt doing that, so he is not getting my vote.
The audience was there to hear the words of Bill Clinton and not those of a heckler using cheap baiting banter. This is getting a bit stale.
Steven from Chicago, thank you kindly for proving my point and for the all too familiar personal attack. Your post supports my claim that some (I certainly do not mean not all) Obama supporters here in Chicago do not allow any other facet of reality. Just because you may not bark at Hillary supporters doesn't mean every other Obama supporter is the model of decorum and politeness. Your attack and accusations of "fabrication" are exactly what I speak of. Perhaps you didn't call me an idiot, but calling me a liar is just as derogatory, and certainly not in the vein of positivity or change. But regardless, I have the sense not to judge Sen. Obama by the actions of supporters like you.

I read these posts, the Obama people are immature.  They have no idea what they are talking about.  They surely have not done any research.  I do not listen to all the BS.  Lets see, Obama has that he mandated that the Nuclear Power plants report nuclear watse. Truth in fact he has not!  What he ended up doing was taking money for his campaign from the Exelon Company that leaked nuclear waste into a river for years.  The ending was they should report, not mandate they report.  The bill had no meat in it.  Obama does not have the strength to fight large corporations. And, what bothers me most, he is a liar!
" I believe McCain will be the next president if Obama is the nominee."

From Your Mouth to Gods Ear, Sister.

Global Tax Obama or Socalized Medico for Mexicans Hillary would both be a disaster for this country.
People who claim that they don't like Bill Clinton, that he has changed, crack me up. He has not changed; you are just finally figuring it out. For the Clintons, it has always been about the Clintons and nothing else. Tell yourself they have changed so you don't have to admit that you have been fooled for fifteen plus years...
All politicians are trash!!!
Why do intelligent people argue over which bought and paid for wh-re is better.
If your head is in the guillotine, does it make any difference to you whether a democrat or republican has their hand on the rope?
These snake oil sales-persons have been selling you down the road for years, when are you going to wake up and see all of them for what they REALLY ARE!!!!!
Hey Obama.....it's more than just the war!
Please! Let us get a grip on this. If you are a "real" Democrat you will reject these prancing Marxists. This is the "change" which they want. I do not know what you will replace them with since this is what your party has become. It's really a shame, but you are so weak.
The dems can't even get along with others in their same party...why are dems always so angry and unhappy with their lives ?
What an obvious plant!!!

Any real heckler would've been escorted out of the building by the 2nd interruption.

Sounds to me like another Clinton election tactic.  They are so obvious it's pathetic.

(very calculating one )   Hello sexist. Why is that only women are calcuting and not men. Both Obama and Hillary want to win. How dare you spit on Hillary with your lies.
I bgelieve Bill Clinton is a Liabilty to Hilliary.  He is a rapist and she took furniture from the whiehouse and put them in her house. These two people are not fit to be president.  They are shameful.
(very calculating one )   Hello sexist. Why is that only women are calcuting and not men. Both Obama and Hillary want to win. How dare you spit on Hillary with your lies.
I have seen nothing but negative comments by the so called impartial  media and the right wing media. Obama is praised but Hillary is attacked even by Chris Mathews. This is strange. Obama and hillary are expected to play rough and tumble politics , no one is supposed to get a free ride. Seems Obama is tnough
Oh my God how rude. The Obama guy who heckled former President Clinton was rude. He must of thought its OK to do such a thing after watching the media slam the Clinton's daily.
I also used to be a Clinton supporter. I am shocked at how Bill Clinton is "coming apart" during these events. It scares me to think what he will be like if he is in the White House. Could it be that after his heart surgery he has lost some of his mental abilities and especially his self-control? It is not unusual for older people to lose mental skills after bypass surgery. It is kind of sad... I think I am going to support Obama instead.
Obama is the most liberal senator on capital hill,
McCain will make hay with that, and he can't defend his record of taking money from the nuclear plant lobby. He winks and nods, and takes the money, then pretends his hands are clean, and he is above politics as usual.
Democrats are noted for finding a way to lose, Obama is thier way this election cycle.
I disagree with anyone who causes an interruption during a speech. The security guards failed at this event. They are paid to do their job. I am supporting Obama but would not hesitate to support Hillary should she become the Party's nominee. Democrats really need to unite to win the White House back. This bickering at rallies strengthens the hand of the GOP.
