Huck talks about Caymans banking

Posted: Monday, February 18, 2008 9:54 AM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Matthew E. Berger
MILWAUKEE -- Huckabee didn't have time to get a tan while in the Cayman Islands this weekend, but he did have time to talk about the island's notorious financial services industry.

Huckabee met with whom he referred to as the island's equivalent to a prime minister. Campaign officials have not confirmed the actual name or title. But Huckabee said Sunday night they had a "good discussion of many of the efforts the Caymans are making to clean up their banking industry and to make themselves a financial services center."

"To their credit, they've got the job done," he said, particularly in the last 15 years.

Most of what concerns Americans is not illegal practices, he noted.

"My whole point is not to say don't put money there because it's illegal, its perfectly legal," he said. "The problem is why should US investors have to put their money in places other than the United States to save. Because our tax system is choking the daylights out of any investments."

Huckabee said his "fair tax" proposal would change that. But making it easier for corporations in the United States probably wouldn't make him very popular on the island, he acknowledged.

"I'm sure he would rather not see us have the fair tax," he said.

The Change Candidate Needs to Change His Tone Towards Women
Posted February 17, 2008 | 07:07 PM (EST)
The first time Hillary Clinton ran a television ad complaining about Barack Obama's unwillingess to debate in Wisconsin, he fired back with an ad of his own about the 18 debates he's already participated in and the two more that are scheduled.
She wouldn't let it go; her subsequent ad speculated on whether he was reluctant because his health insurance care plan wasn't as good as hers.
At a televised campaign stop, someone asked him how he felt about the ad campaign. Obama, grave-faced and sympathetic in tone, opined that when Senator Clinton was 'feeling down,' she went on the attack to make herself feel better; that is, she committed an error in judgment because she was in a bad mood. That was the moment when I, and other women of a certain age, all over the country, winced.
The change candidate had embraced one of the oldest clichés in the book -- that women are held hostage by emotion, that we can't be trusted with the big decisions because, depending on our age, we're either on the rag or having a hot flash. The overtly sexist position used to be that you didn't want to entrust the red phone to a woman because women are unpredictable and irrational; a fit of hormonal pique and kaboom, we all glow in the radioactive dark. The ones who aren't instantly vaporized, that is.
The kinder, gentler version? A soft-spoken observation about what a female candidate does when she's "feeling down," the implication being that Hillary's distress over the delegate count had impaired her judgment, and that someone who loses her way like that is not strong enough to withstand the rigors of the presidency. If you think that I and the indignant gal friends I've polled are overreacting, try the acid test: Imagine any major candidate making that kind of subtle put-down about a man's psychological fortitude. In 1972, Thomas Eagleton had to have shock treatment to get us to raise a national eyebrow about his mental health, ending his brief tenure as George McGovern's running mate. Short of that, we tend to assume that the boys are steady enough to handle the job.
The interesting question is where the inspiration for the dig came from. If it was truly an off-the-cuff remark, then it's just gender-role business as usual, and the French, sadly, are right: The more things change, the more they remain the same. This might help to explain why women stick to Hillary; any woman who grew up in the transitional generation between Betty Crocker moms and Betty Friedan daughters has a special antenna for this kind of slight. We've heard it before, we know we're going to hear it again, and we'd just as soon hang with a smart girl who gets it, for all her flaws. As for the more highly educated women who poll for Obama, let's see how they feel when they find out he would think better of them if they were guys.
If it wasn't a spontaneous comment -- if someone in Senator Obama's camp thinks it's wise to use code to address and exploit our primitive fears about whether women can cope -- then whoever came up with it ought to be ashamed of himself, and the man who uttered it needs to rethink the strength of his opponent and her supporters. Beat her on better ideas, or oratory, beat her with passion and energy, but beat her fair and square, if you can. Don't talk about change and then quote from a 1950s playbook on the battle between the sexes.
Good job NBC. This is news I haven't seen on the other major networks. And it's straight reporting. Everyone else is making this look like a vacation. That's not news by a large stretch--and it's not true. This note about a meeting is much more newsworthy. Thanks for being straight up. Thanks for reporting and not commentating. Huckabee isn't the only candidate that's a victim of spin and commentation. They all are. It's good to hear what's going on and not an opinion of what's going on. There's a time and a place for each.
Huckabee is a brave and honest man to address these issues!
Is this why they call him the 'Huckster' ?

If there was an IQ test required for presidency, and I think there should be, I do not think that Huckabee would pass muster.
huckabee is the man with our nations interest at heart.he is the only one who wants our borders protected ,jobs from moving away businesses remaining in this country and our personal finances controlled by us and not gov't and each person having the right to their control over their choice of medical ins.a vote for HUCK is a reason for hope.    blessings
Hey huckster lovers...he has a phony degree from some theology college...at least he is better educated than the typical evangelical who struggle to make it through high school
FYI: Obama talking about Hillary Clinton on her period and being down, is disgusting, and an insult to ALL women.
Tell us why you won't debate Hillary in Wisconsin Obama, tell us the real truth about your years of friendship with Rezco the slum lord who has been indited, tell us the truth abot Exilon, and the nuclear bill that you watered down for your big contributors,.. make some more stolen, dream, fairytale speeches.  Then tell us why anyone let alone women should vote for you.

Must have been the President of Citibank....

"My whole point is not to say don't put money there because it's illegal, its perfectly legal," he said. "The problem is why should US investors have to put their money in places other than the United States to save. Because our tax system is choking the daylights out of any investments."

He is right about that.....
Under a Clinton administration, more money would probably go down there as well...
What's the matter?  Can't Hillary take it like a man?  When you get into the political arena, its like getting into a boxing match, nobody put a gun to her head to run for office.  Stop complaining and get in the game.  I wince when I hear Hillary say that the (male candidates) are ganging up on her.  I wince whenever they send Bill out to be her attack dog.  Now the Clintonistas are trying to blame the S. Carolina debacle on Bill.  Is Hillary not running her own campaign?? Please. The Clintons make me wince 100 percent of the time.   And I voted twice for Bill.  Thank goodness we have somebody else to vote for this election.
I`m old enough to remember JFK, his speaches and accomplishments as president when he was alive. Obama comes closer to stirring the "emotions and feelings" than anyone since MLK or JFK. I may actually become a believer by Nov.
This is an issue in which I tend to disagree with my friends on the left. It is not the fair tax that is the problem. The problem is who makes up the rules. If a fair tax commission only has input from the wealthy and corporations(a la Cheney's energy policy)it would be a disaster for most of America. If a commission is set up to look out for what is best for the vast majority of Americans then it could be a workable plan.
Rick, NC , Don't bash what you don't believe or even know and thing about , you are the only one who looks like an idiot.

On to the topic Mike Huckabee for president, He has all the right ideas and a better sense of understanding of what America needs than any other candidate out there. But the people what all the excitement of the democrats fighting , spending over $280,000,000  between them just for the taste of power, I truly believe they are only interested in themselves not the American people.
Mike Huckabee has spent around $8,000,000. If he had the fund the other people has more people would get to hear the better person.
