Obama camp cries foul

Posted: Tuesday, February 19, 2008 10:20 AM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray
The Obama campaign is jumping all over today's article by the Politico's Roger Simon, who writes that Team Clinton is considering targeting the pledged delegates Obama has won. Says Obama manager David Plouffe in statement: “As it becomes increasingly clear that Senator Clinton may not be able to secure the nomination by winning the support of actual voters, the Clinton campaign has once again floated a strategy that would essentially say that the preference of Democratic voters is a mere obstacle to their win-at-all-costs strategy."

He continues, “Voters are already rejecting the Clinton campaign’s say-or-do-anything-to-win tactics, and this is the latest example that it’s time to turn the page on this type of politics that could severely harm our party’s chances to win the general election."

Of course, as Simon wrote, pledged delegates aren't required to cast their vote at the convention for the candidate who won them. But here -- as with the debate over superdelegates and over Florida and Michigan -- the Obama campaign is trying to claim the PR high ground.

*** UPDATE *** NBC’s Domenico Montanaro adds, The Obama campaign held a conference call to continue to pound the issue raised in the Politico article, that the Clinton campaign may decide to go after and try to sway pledged delegates, who are technically not bound to a candidate (the DNC, in fact, refers to "pledged" delegates as a "myth.") Obama Campaign Manager David Plouffe and surrogate David Wilhelm, who headed Bill Clinton’s 1992 campaign, had some choice words for the other side. They called this a “disturbing pattern” and “grasping at straws;” that this is another example of a “say-or-do-anything-to-win tactic;” that the Clinton campaign is hoping this is a “rabbit they can pull out of the hat to win;” that the latest tactic “suggests there’s trickery that can be engaged in” to win. They said they “think that will be rejected” by voters and party leaders.

Plouffe acknowledged that, “Technically, it is true that delegates could switch. Our point here is this is part of a pattern. Rather than try to focus on pledged delegates and winning, they’re focused on these alternative routes,” which “could cause huge dissention in the party.”

They added that, “Sometimes nominations are not worth having….One of those times would be at the cost of ripping the party apart.”

They also combated the Clinton electability argument to superdelegates that she’s best to beat McCain. They cited leads in polls against McCain and that because Clinton "denigrates Red states,” candidates down ballot “would be in real harm.”

Come on people!  Don't buy into the hype.  Focus on the real issues facing our nation.  The world is changing quickly.  Key world leaders are being replaced, dying off, and the game has changing as we speak.  Look at what the Clintons are actually doing to win the campaign.  She is only going to states where the big number delegates benefit them.  She is not interested in the "little people".  Whomever becomes President, it will be no bed of roses.  It will take all of us standing together to pull our country out of the quicksand of the Bush years.  Change will provide the growth we need as a nation.  It won't be easy!  But it's necessary to restore our credibility in the world and secure our children's future.  If we attack our nation's problems with the same fervor we attack people, we could come up with workable solutions.  Let's stand united for change.
Obama's camp needs to realize this is politics and yes Clinton wants to win just like Obama does. Quit being so sensitive the republicans aren't going to be any nicer, they will come at him fiercely. Obama needs to quit playing the victim that to me is unappealing and why I feel Hillary is who we need running. She has weathered many storms and come out of them stronger. I don't hear her whining like Obama everytime he attacks her and her husband. And how come when things come out about Clinton Obama's camp doesnt get the blame but when something leaks about Obama its the Hillary campaign attacking him and even Hillary personally. She can't control everyone that is backing her.
It has become increasingly clear that if Mrs. Clinton wins the nomination, McCain wins the Presidency.
The Clintons are willing to do anything to get what they want, and they always use the tactic of accusing the other side of doing what they are doing themselves.

This time around they are quite willing to risk complete destruction of the Democratic party to get their way.   The Clinton play book is always do whatever it takes to win, then mop up the mess later.

Slandering anyone who gets in the way is also standard Clinton practice.   Many Democrats didn't mind that when the opposition was Republicans, but now we see the same techniques being used in an intramural fight and the ugliness is laid bare.
Obama has better advisers and stratigists, Obama and everyone who works for his are good at convincing and argueing. All of them can be good lawyers and good liars, but they cannot be good leaders. The longer you know about Obama, the more you know that he's not honest, he doesn't keep his promise, he's not trustworthy, and he will not bring any real change we need.
Clinton Rocks
Obama Sucks

He needs to stop complaining every day. People are getting tired of his "inspiration".
Day by day, hour by hour the Clintons are REMINDING us about the Clintons of olf

The Clinton character is being revealed....

Lie, cheat, steal .....
It's all part of the 'game'
Smear, slander, 'race bait'...
That's just politics

Depravity and debauchery in the White House ?
If Democrats defended this in the Clintons....
Why are you SURPRISED that Republicans are defending illegal wire taps, torture, signing statements, a politically motivated Justice Department...

Isn't it time for 'CHANGE' ?

Honesty MATTERS
Integrity MATTERS
CHARACTER MATTERS

Obama '08
I love it! I knew that chic was shady. Thanks for confirming my preconceived notions, HRC! It has been high time the Dem's lost a significant portion of the black vote to Republicans. it should happen this year.
Black conservatives, this is your year! Free thy selves from the empty promises! Get the hooves off your back - they've been riding the backs of your votes for years while they try to take more of your money, encourage you to kill black children before they are even born, discourage your business and investment ambitions, and stir up racism by feigning favoritism.
Once they derail Obama, perhaps you will see their true colors then. He'll be courteous to try to keep party unity, but you will know the truth.
I think Micelle has a point.  I am 52 years old.  I am prouder than ever of the US right now. After Vietnam, after watergate, after Iran Contra and Cigar gate, and the Iraq mess, we have a reason finally to feel pride. We have real viable candidates who would not have stood a chance even 5 years ago because of gender and race.  Get off your hate wagon.  It is unattractive.
Both candidates are very similar on policies with slight differences. It is said that Obama is all rhetoric, but as I listen and research...this is just not so. The more negative the Clinton campaign becomes, the more I look for the facts.
Like policies, one being negative, one extremely positive, one running a contradictory campaign sending a contradictory message, the other sending a consistent message and taking the high road when possible...................

If I have 2 candidates, Hillary and Obama.
Obama is it.

Of course this is not the only basis on which I make my decision. It is just a point that makes Obama the choice just like the many others I have found.
Obama - TONY REZCO ?! Been friends for 20 years ! That's interesting. They buy houses together, they make loans to each other. What a deal ! The guy (Rezco) is a mobster .Why is this relationship being covered-up by the media ? Obama is a phony and you don't have to dig very deep to see the proof.
Let's get Michelle's statement right: "...it's the first time in my adult life that I really feel proud of being an American..." She didn't say she wasn't proud of being American. She is taking that pride up a notch. Because as  a black woman she sees,  for the first time, so many whites voting for her black husband, and supporting her as well, that she is blown away by the whole experience. The American history vis-a-vis blacks and indians is not something we can all feel proud of. Now we have another reason to be proud to be americans. What's wrong with that?
"Donna Brazile, who was Al Gore’s campaign manager in 2000 and is a member of the DNC, said recently: “If 795 of my colleagues decide this election, I will quit [the DNC]. I feel very strongly about this.”
That's what I'm talking about!
Why are you skipping Michelle Obama's "first time i"ve been proud of America" because her husband is in the lead speech?

She's an embarrassment to America
Tuck, KS (Sent Tuesday, February 19, 2008 10:37 AM)

I do believe we need to clarify Mrs. Obama's statement.  I think she said "For the first time in my adult life, I am REALLY proud"

Note the word REALLY that you conveniently leave out of your rhetoric.  This implies that she has always been proud, but now she is REALLY PROUD.  Your grasp of the English language is equal to that of George W. Bush.  By the way, had you not taken that statement out of context, you would be intelligent enough to realize she was referring to people coming out to vote and involving themselves in the process of selecting a president.  It had nothing to do with Barack!  Get your facts straight and don't spread the hate!
With two wars going on and the state this country is in i will vote for Hillary.Obama ia all talk and nothing behind it.You cannot keep saying you are for change when you wouldn't even know how to make the Change. It reqwires more than talk to make change. The change Obama is talking about is himself and he wouldn't even no where to begin.Talk is cheap but is takes money to by whiskey as the saying goes.the under 40s are for Obama but the baby boomers say no way.The young people don't even know what side of there bread is butterd on as the saying goes. The over 40s aren't buying his talk My god he is even using Martin Luthers sayings. He can't thing of an by himself. He is even afraid to debate Hillary. She can give him a run for the money as the saying goes.Has anyone ever ask Obama just how he will make change. He wouldn' even know where to begin.he is even using Martin Luthers saying I have a dream.Well as far as i am concerned he is dreaming.how can some one who has been up in washington two years and has even said with his big mouth that he never got into Washington but he knew it needed a change. How would he know that if he never got into washington. What in the sam hill was he doing then sleeping.
Team Obama is ALWAYS CRYING!
HP Boston (Sent Tuesday, February 19, 2008 10:37 AM)

LOL:

You have one team crying foul
You have one team that cries on camera and uses it for votes.....

I think there are going to be a lot of democrats crying in November when President John McCain is announced....

The Obama campaign is jumping all over today's article by the Politico's Roger Simon, who writes that Team Clinton is considering targeting the pledged delegates Obama has won.

The Clinton's going to threaten them with the same fate as Vince Foster??????
I KNOW THAT I HEARD HILLARY CLINTON USING THE LINE YES WE CAN, EARLY ON IN HER STUMP SPEECHES.
I BELIEVE SHE WAS THE FIRST TO USE THAT LINE.
CHECK OUT THE TOM HARKIN STEAK FRY.
I THINK THAT WAS WHERE CHRIS MATTHEWS SAID HILLARY'S SPEECH WAS GREAT AND WHEN OBAMA CAME OUT WITH ALL FIRED UP, HE SAID WHAT DID HE MEAN BY THAT.
I REALLY BELIEVE YOU WILL FIND OUT WITH A LITTLE RESEARCH THAT OBAMA HAS BEEN LIFTING HILLARY'S PLATFORM RIGHT OUT FROM UNDER HER.
SO SHE IS GOING AFTER HIS DELEGATES HUH!
WELL MORE POWER TO HER.  I HOPE SHE CAN DO IT.  SHE
HAS EARNED THEM.
I DON'T THINK THE IDEA OF THE REMAINING FEW SUPER DELEGATES BEING A FAIR BROKER WOULD REALLY BE FAIR, SINCE THEY ARE PRETTY MUCH IN THE OBAMA CAMP.
I GUESS THEY WANT TO SEE McCAIN BECOME THE NEXT PRESIDENT.
FRANKLY I WOULD RATHER SEE McCAIN THAN OBAMA.
FRANKLY, I JUST DON'T LIKE BARACK, AND HIS WIFE'S GOT A PRETTY LOOSE TONGUE.
IF THE CLINTONS OR ANY OTHER DEMOCRAT FOR THAT MATTER HAD SAID SHE WAS PROUD OF AMERICA FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HER ADULT LIFE JUST THINK OF WHAT A TIME THE REPUBLICANS WOULD HAVE WITH THAT.
THEY ALREADY CALL US UNPATRIOTIC FOR WANTING TO BRING OUR TROOPS HOME.  SEEMS A LOT MORE PATRIOTIC THAN SENDING THEM OVER TO DIE IN A CIVIL WAR.
I just have one question... Who is Obama?  What has he done?  Never heard his name before the presidential race began.  Oh yeah,  I forgot, he didn't vote for the war in Iraq.  This must surely qualify him for our Supreme Commander. How about voting for someone with experience.  This isn't the student council we're voting for.
My wife and I are in our mid 70's and we have been voting Democrats all our life. We have decided if Hillary Clinton is the Democratic nominee we will not vote at all. I think either way this election goes she will lose. If she loses to Obama she will lose and if she is the one running against McCain she will lose as a great number of democrats will chose to stay at home and not vote at all. I used to think Bill Clinton hung the moon, I never thought he was as crooked and nasty as he has become. this election is about Hillary abd Obama and not the Clinton spin machine. This is either a good time or a sad time for the Democrats. We will watch and see.
Sen. Clinton is just using the system that has been established. Obama knew the rules when he entered the race. It's a little too late for him to start whining now. Sounds like when Obama wants change, he wants things to change his way. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Aren't the Clintons SABOTAGING their OWN CAMPAIGN ?

They WON'T be able to steal pledged delegates
By mentioning this, they're p*ssing off Obama's supporters and most independent observers....

Slick move, Hillary

You SURE know how to pick a campaign staff
You SURE know how to 'play the game'

With this move, you've admitted your desperation
You've admitted your willingness to break the spirit and the letter of the rules
You've displayed your lack of character and integrity

Great job......

Say 'good night', Gracie   ;-D
My goodness, Michelle is now proud to be an American. She was not proud when this country provided her and Obama to purchase a home valued at $1.9 million dollars. When a Chicago hospital pays her $300,000 one year for consulting. That she had an opportunity to go to a very great university. I could go on, but I was proud to serve my country as a 17 year old boy in the second world war, and I never had any of the opportunities you had. The media will try to spin this for you to a positive, but words mean something, that is what your husbands has been saying.
Stealing votes or borrowing words, which offense is worse?....
To those who don't want Mrs. Obama in white house.
Are you old enough to remember what Mrs. Barbara Bush said about Mrs. Ferraro? People should probably not pay attention to what spouses say (except maybe in the case of Bill Clinton).
As an undecided voter in Texas, this assures that I won't be voting for Hillary.

Shouldn't we wonder about the character of a candidate that wouldn't respect the people's decision? Shouldn't a candidate that's here only to serve the people say, "I would only accept the nomination, If I have the most vote among the people that I'm trying to serve?" Isn't this about the people of this county after all, or is it about feeding someone's ambition and ego? Aren't we losing sight of what election are all about? Shouldn't we smart enough to see through what's going on here?
"Independent in CA" you're exactly right. I think everyone should stop the divisive, close-minded back and forth and think about the level of integrity one would have to have (or lack of integrity rather) to adopt this tactic. I think people should look very closely at the Clintons and ask themselves if this is the kind of pettiness, underhandedness and negative tactics they want in the Whitehouse. I believe that Kerry, Leahy and Kennedy support Obama because they've been privy to how the Clintons conduct themselves up close for years. I just wish people would stop bickering blindly and pay attention. Former members of their own staff are fervently against their tactics and they've been openly referred to as dishonest. With me, it's not personal with Clinton; I was neutral about her for a long time. But their behavior during this campaign has frankly made me uncomfortable. I'm uncormfortable that we will all get so used to these tactics that we'll accept them as the norm. I just wish people would wake up; this is not a soccer match - my guy against yours. This is our country and we owe it to ourselves to reject this kind of political behavior.
Obama plagerised materials in his speech. how can we, as citizens trust him? he is all rhetoric, which most is not even his. its mostly stolen. he is all talk, someone elses word, and no content.
maybe First Read can clarify this.
Is HRC going after the pleged delegate of the states already won by Obama or is she going after the already declared SUPER delegates. The way I read this is she is going after the PLEGED delegates from the states alreay won. If this is the case, is it not against party rules?
To those who say that Clinton has done nothing wrong and that Obama is being hypersensitive: You are all mistaken and obviously terrible people. To say that this is the "way it is" is so beyond ridiculous it's offensive. This isn't the way democracy is. This is not how America is. For Clinton to manipulate the electorial math as she is makes her no better than Bush. She should feel deep embarassment for this and will hopefully suffer the consequences. No American wants to be told that their vote will be null. I hope Clinton's supporters begin to take a look back at the person they're trying to land in the White House.
You Hillary suppoters can critize Obama and Michelle, but at the end of the day they will be in the "White House".  We are all humans the last time I checked.  Everybody is going to make a mistake.  Obama is okay, because he used words from a friend, but he should have said he was going to use a couple words of a friend before he started on the subject.  Michelle comments were blown out of context.  She really didn't mean anything by it.  Also, I heard on MSNBC that Michelle is going to make a statement later today.  It is not a big deal.  Only the Hillary supporters, and media is blowing this one up.  We are all subject to human error.  Look at your current "President".  I can really see a lot of human error.  One mistake isn't going to change my mind for Obama.  Hillary is down on her luck, she will do or say anything to win.  It is interesting, because she has not commented on why she thought Obama would be done by Feb 6th.  Is this the kind of "President" you want.  She ran out of cash, loaned herself 5 million dollars, and said it with an attitude when asked about it, campaign members left, and are still leaving, and she feeds off negativeness.

Obama 2008! White Supporter in Houston, TX. Age 50
This election is about future and unity not past. Obama is our future. He can reconcile our nation and bring world peace. Let's vote for Obama.

Obama is a fraud.  When he preaches to his white wealthy college educated worshipers, he tries to sound like a fancy talking white man.

When he preaches to his black worshipers, he tries to sound like a brother.

All of his preacher speeches are simply excerpts from famous speeches from famous people in history.  Can’t he come up with anything on his own, or did they not teach him how to think for himself at Harvard?

I find it really laughable that all of the Obama worshipers are talking about how badly Obama would beat John McCain if the general election were to end up being between McCain and Obama.

For anyone who thinks that the lack of Republican voter turnout thus far is a sign that
Republicans this year are going to sit this one out because they are so unhappy with the Republican Party or John McCain or both, and as a result, Obama would give McCain a good ass whipping, should really get out of the house more often.

Now that McCain is going to be the Republican nominee for President, the Republican voters are going to stay home moving forward more than they have in the past month and a half.  Why would you go out and vote in a primary or caucus that is used to determine whom your nominee will be, when you already know?  Not only does that not make sense, but it’s also a waste of time.

There is a reason why so few Republicans have voted so far.  It all has to do with their Trojan horse plan of attack that will take place in November.

Some of you Obama worshipers (especially the younger ones) are really naive.  You should have paid more attention in your American history or political science classes.

The Republicans have a method and a strategy and all of you are going to see it in action in November.  Start stocking up on your Kleenex now, because you're going to be in disbelief when Obama gets his ass kicked Republican Style!

Enjoy riding the wave while it last Obama worshipers.

Remember, The higher they rise, they harder they fall!

Don’t tell anyone but I’ve heard through the grapevine of a McCain/Clinton ticket should she not get the Democratic nomination.  Talk about Obama getting tag teamed.  I’d pay extra to see that match up.  I’m already stocking up on party supplies.
Just words, you have b.o. "Just Words" don't mean a dam thing, comming out of his mouth. Just plagiarizing, don't worrie about, it's not a big thing. Until those word come out of the mouth of the President. Just frighin" words, from the most powerful leader in the world. just words, just words.
Hillary, go home.  Don't go away mad, just go away.
Hillary Clinton is a disgrace to American politics.  Is this her idea of new management.  She is horrible!  Now I know what the Republicans mean about her.  She is not presidential at all  OBAMA 08 !
The Choice for the democrats it´s so obvious. The Clintons are being stubborn, selfish and foolish. The way they´ve behaved in this race so far it´s desparate.Power to any cost. They are harming party for sure !

Japhet, Sweden
The so called "war of words" simply confirm Obama's assertion of the importance of words and Clinton looks petty and old politics while he looks presidential. I am a 70 year old white woman and not some starry eyed teen. Believe me his words are a lot more important in the world view of us.
Good, I hope she does steal his delegates. What a girlie man he is. Welcome to politics sissie boy Barack!!
It is amazing that HRC supporters actually have the nerve to denigrate Obama in light of such a clear disregard for the election process and will of the American people. The attitude displayed by her supporters clearly shows that negative energy begets negative energy. Like a moth drawn to a light bulb, they are attracted to that which so accurately reflects their cynicism.

This destructive, divisive attitude is a disturbing reflection of the destructive, divisive politics so pervasive in society already and magnified during the past 7+ years by the Bush administration. I for one am sick of seeing the rule of law trampled on in this country, as exemplified by the blatant disregard for the Constitution and citizens' rights shown by the current administration. Clearly a vote for Hillary is a vote to continue the hatred, rhetoric and unrest that now has our country so divided within and hated worldwide.

Anyone who truly cares about the future of our country should be interested enough to set a better tone than this...the way that you represent yourself is a direct reflection of the person to whom you give your support.

Regarding the Michelle Obama quote, I agree with Scott. This is the first time in 20 years that we have an opportunity to look forward to an administration with a positive message and not filled with lies and scandals, whether moral (Bill Clinton) or otherwise (all 7+ years of Bushwacking.) After what happened in 2000 and 2004, I too am proud and encouraged to see Americans finally choosing to change and take back our country.

OBAMA '08
NO THIRD TERM!!!?
Is this the cry against McCain, when it should more accurately apply to the Clintons?
It is just naive to suggest that playing by the rules does not include all the rules.  If a candidate, any candidate is astute enough to manipulate the rules and achieve a legal outcome that serves their purpose then good for them....and ultimately, good for us.

Team Hill, why not just pull out all the stops now?  Put Howard Wolfson out to say the following:

"Delegates and Superdelegates, be warned that if the majority of you vote for Sen. Obama for the nomination, we will kill him.   If you love Sen. Obama, then you must save him from this horrible fate.  Vote Clinton."
has anyone noticed how this is turning out very much like the last season of The West Wing???
Obama didn't "spend" anything on superdelegates.  He had a PAC two years ago that helped candidates win their elections (he even gave money to Hillary). At that time, he wasn't even considered a contender for the nomination.

By the way, I am 29 years old and I haven't been truly proud of my country EVER.  In the 80's, we gave huge tax breaks for the rich while we ran up some of the biggest deficits in the history of the U.S.  In the 90's, we had a President who cheated on his wife IN THE WHITEHOUSE.  In the 2000's, well all you have to say is GW Bush, and I think everybody will agree it is about the worst time ever for the U.S.

Don't get me wrong, I love my country, and I will do whatever I can to make it a better country, but PROUD, not really.  And, before you call me unpatriotic, that I am only one of many millions of citizens under 30 years of age that feel this way.  The rest of you need to check your pride at the door and face reality!
Amazimg how Chuck "Obama Lover" Todd breaks these unfavorable Clinton stories exactly on the day a primary is held.  I think there something rotten at MSNBC, and it is Chuck Todd, Tim Russert, Chris Matthews, and Keith Olbermann.  What a great bunch of journalists,NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PITY!!!  Both camps are angry at each other---more desperate at the Clinton camp apparently.  I wish one camp would give it up quickly to give this suffering superpower country a chance!  IF this goes on and gets uglier, my vote will have to go to McCain!!!!!!!!!!  Watch OUT, Clinton and Obama folks: I know I'm not the only one threatening.
everybody is talking about integrity, honor and a lot of other high minded ideas yet repbulicans and some independents have only one thing in focus is thier hatered of Hillary and their willingness to do any and everything they can to stop her
Only the Clinton's would try something like this. When Obama's wins the nomination. I know for sure he won't pick her as his running mate. The republicans were right the Clinton's have no morals
This election is becoming a joke. Be real, both canidates will be could for the democrate party and the country at this point. Rather it's Obama speeches or Hill&Bill experience that move you, it is true the country needs change. Texas will be the making or breaking point for this election. Just sit back and wait until March,4 2008.
"Pledged delegates aren't required to remain with the candidate they are pledged to.  But I wonder how many voters know that? Also, I'd be curious to know what the reasoning is behind allowing pledged delegates that flexibility?  Somehow, I doubt that it was so the will of the voters could be subverted to a system where "highest bidder" wins.  The Simon article does suggest that the Clinton campaign is going to use "incentives" to peel off these delegates"

The above is precisely WHY the superdelegates were created (during Reagan) in the first place.  The flexibility of pledged delegates to change their allegiances is the source of the "smoke filled room" stories from those days where delegates were wined, dined, and otherwise armtwisted to change their votes.  The superdelegates were instituted, supposedly, to stop that process and create "a level playing field."  Looks like that theory is a failure, too, for Democrates, since superdelegates can also change THEIR minds, if they want to.
