Exit polls: Why Obama won

Posted: Tuesday, February 19, 2008 10:26 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From MSNBC's Norah O'Donnell and Adam Verdugo
Obama chalked up his ninth straight victory and won in this predominantly white state with a strong showing across a broad spectrum of voters and by eating into Hillary Clinton's base of support. He nearly tied her among women, won on all of the issues and won every income level. He also won the white vote under-60.

First, the independents: One-in-four voters call themselves independents in this open primary and tonight, Obama took nearly two-thirds.

Second, white voters: He did very well among white men with 62% of their vote to Clinton's 36%. Remember those Edwards voters? At least among white men, it looks like at least some of them are going for Obama. Clinton, though, still took a plurality of white women (53%-45%).

Obama also made inroads with one core constituency of Clinton's: white working-class voters (households making under $50k/yr). Clinton still edged him out 51% to 48%, but Obama had a strong showing. He won white households making more than $50k/yr -- 56% to 48%.

Electability has been something both campaigns have been touting. Tonight, Obama beat Clinton soundly -- 63%- 37% -- when voters were asked who would be most likely to beat the Republican candidate in the fall.

One other note regarding the negative attacks this past week: Wisconsin Democrats took notice. When we asked if either of these candidates attacked the other unfairly, 53% said that Clinton was unfair, while only 33% said the same about Obama.

Not all is lost, however, for Clinton. She still took the senior vote, those with less than a college education and Catholics, but it was not enough to overtake Obama.

They are just beginning to count Milwaukee's votes- the largest city and majority-minority.  Several colleges and well-contested local races.  Hillary's going to lose Wisconsin bigger than folks think.
It's finally shown to be true. Everyone hates the Clinton's!
Good luck Obama!

It will be interesting to hear what clinton will have to say about Obama's win in Wisconsin..Count wisconsisn as unimportant as well?
Had she just kept a mature postures and tamed bill, she would have been winning. But unfortunately, she continues to show how she will do anything or say anything to get elected!!
Old White Women: Hear them Roar!

Vote Team Clinton! 4 more years that were at least better then bush!
Democrats fall for this fluffy buffy blather from Obama. Heck, shiny things impress and confuse Democrats. At some point, somone totals up the costs of what Obama wants to do, and it's not pretty
Way to go polling in the US! Once again the overthinkers have been debunked. Obama will be not only the Democratic Nominee, he will also be the next president of the United States. Throw out all of this dumb analysis about Catholics and Whites and Elderly votes, it doesn't matter. What does matter right now, is it's over for the Clinton War Machine...Please shut Pat Buchanan up as well, his opinions are worthless
It's time for Hillary to drop out. Even Mitt Romney had more class than her. She's simply diminishing the chances for Dems every day she remains in the race.

I think Obama won tonight because people are tired of the Clinton family falsehoods,  . And I wish someone in the Obama team would point out to the general public that Michelle Obama did not say exactly what she is accused of saying.  She in fact said,  This is the first time in my life that I am REALLY proud of my country.  hats a whole lot different than the way she is being quoted.  Please get this straightened out before it goes any further
congrats obama. the message is clear to the clinton camp. OLD POLITICS OF ATTACKING DON'T WORK. people have said it through votes, they want change, now!
Obama's speech cut into Clinton's. Rather than sitting around jabbering about whether or not it was rude, why not show the rest of her speech? It's not technologically impossible to tape-delay one of the two speeches. MSNBC isn't at the mercy of the campaigns when they interrupt each other.
I am a Democrat and have been one in my entire life. If Hillary does not get the nomination I will be switching party and will vote for Senator McCain. I am tired of the negative blogs/comments/racist scare tactic Obama camp are using to win the nomination. I am tired of a ridiculous sanction by DNC who prefer not to have all votes counted. My only suggestion to Senator McCain will be to pick a very strong woman like Senator Dole who is admired by Republican and Central Democrat and will bring you the votes in South. And please promise me to examine Mr. Obama's past dealing in general election. Action speaks louder than words specially when the words are not even your own.
Every event is standing room only. By the tens of thousands they brave the cold, the rain, the snow and even tornadoes!
The people keep voting and Obama keeps wining. Not just words! Facts!
We love you Barack Obama!
Can't wait for the day we see you in the White House!!

Hilary forgetaboutit.
SINCE THE REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE IS QUITE CERTAINLY TO BE McCAIN,  THEY FEEL FREE TO VOTE FOR OBAMA TO KNOCK HILLARY OUT OF THE RACE.
AS LONG AS THE REPUBLICANS CAN VOTE IN THE DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY THERE IS NO CONTEST.
THEY KNOW HILLARY WILL GET THE JOB DONE THAT DEMOCRATS WANT DONE.
THEY THINK OBAMA WON'T
THEY BETTER BE CAREFULL PLAYING THEIR DIRTY TRICKS.
THEY MIGHT GET MORE THAN THEY BARGANED FOR.
Chris Matthews:
1)  Election coverage is not "Hardball"
2)  If you're going to BADGER an Obama supporter, shouldn't you make the same demands of a Clinton supporter?
BOO!
It's time for the Clinton's to gracefully step aside.  All they have remaining is negative attacks that would make Karl Rove proud.  The Democrats, Independents, and, yes, even many Republicans are announcing that it's time for a new era of politics.
The Clintons have to win the remaining contests by a margin close to 60%.  All the people sending her mony are only prolonging the misery.
I am with Sam...I don't see how Obama can win in genreal elections...also, I really don't want a guy who doesn't have any experience to lead the counntry...that kind change will bring America into unpredicable path...
Please don't scare use with your rediculous threat, "I'll vote McCain". Please do SAM. Nice support for your party.
Chris was mean to the State Senator from Texas!  That was not called for.  He works in the state of Texas and probably has never been on National TV before and he did not have to make him look bad.  Barack Obama has worked on ethics reform.  Something off the top of my head.
Chris Matthews was a little hard on Kirk Watson. Sure, he should have been able to answer, but to continue to beat him up for not was rather rude.
Hillary needs to be gracious and pull out of the race.
I am a Democrat and have been one in my entire life. If Hillary does not get the nomination I will be switching party and will vote for Senator McCain. So what...We realize that you are not looking for change...We will just replace your vote with a disenchanted republican
Go ahead and cross party lines, Sam. We don't want you then. But don't act like you voted for Obama after he becomes a successful, inspirational president.
Sam, wake up, the majority believes Clinton is dishonest and can say anything or any lie to get elected. This country had had enough of Clinton machine. She voted for the Iraq war and did not even recant it.  You still want her to win?  What kind of democrat are you.  What did Obama lie about ? Nothing.  He is the fresh face who can bring some desperately needed change and take this country out of the miserable position in the world.  (if you have not noticed look at the price of gas, unemployment, value of dollar, Stock market, housing market, economy etc. etc. etc. )    Wake up and smell the coffee...may be you will change your mind...
Well I must say I am shocked at the American people that they would vote for someone who is a copycat. It only tells me that all you upper educated people must like someone else looking at your test papers or enjoyed the coping of others and see no big deal.  Cheaters never prosper. Oh by the by, McCain will win now on just the fact that he and his wife will ruin the Obama's on devotion to America. Thanks be to Michelle. Unamerican wife and a cheater husband..Rock on new messiah...Or should we say Piped Piper...All the little rats in a row.
Did ya read that he said you can say anything or do anything if you just blow it off and blame it on Clinton attacks....Now here comes the Swift boats..Can ya here the water splashing on your ballot. I have counted the number of Democrates that have said if Obama gets the nomination they will vote for a true American McCain and Obama will never be President. They will make you feel if you vote for the lies and being unproud  then you will be unamerican to..Cause guess what...More breaking news to come.. Those of us that see through obama's lies will campain for McCain. Have fun with another Republican President. I will as long as it's not a liar. i looked up all the speches he's barrowed and it is a sin to see it. Hey, a sinning messiah. Way to go.
I can't believe all the Wisconsinites that are falling for all the fluff and polish that Obama is offering up ( most 2nd hand by the way). Hillary is the best chance to beat Mccain. She has the best inside route to work with the Rep. and will. Things are looking bleak that it will happen.
we are going to fire a president who had no experience and looks like we are going to hire another one without experience.  Again the public is listening to pretty words just as they listened to religous words 8 years ago.  wakeup America and smell the coffee.
It's finally shown to be true. Everyone hates the Clinton's!

Not everyone....We have just been unimpressed and quite disappointed in the manner in which she ran her campaign.....
Chris Mathews just showed MSNBC viewers that he can't tell the difference between a campaign supporter and a campaigne representive. Notice he didn't play hardball with Ms. Tubbs. He could have asked her how many Democrats support Hillary's vote on the war in Iraq? Shame on you Mathews!

Here's a post from earlier today:

If Hillary could do half the job Obama does her record wouldn't look like crap.

Oh! I copied this from another poster--but I needs to be posted alot--the people need to know who will work hard for them and that person is not Hillary--it's Obama

The following information gathered from the Library of Congress on the Legislative experience Junior Senator Hillary Clinton and Junior Senator Barack Obama. Please Feel free to check these records for yourself and draw your own conclusion.

Senator Clinton, who has served only one full term, which is 6 years and another year campaigning, has authored and passed 20 twenty pieces of legislation in her term of six years into law. These bills can be found at (wwwhomas.loc.gov).  Senator Clinton has passed.

(1) Establish the Kate Mullany National Historic Site.
(2) Support the goals and ideals of Better Hearing and Speech Month.
(3) Recognize the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.
(4) Name courthouse after Thurgood Marshall.
(5) Name courthouse after James L. Watson.
(6) Name post office after Jonn A. O'Shea.
(7) Designate Aug. 7, 2003, as National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
(8) Support the goals and ideals of National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
(9) Honor the life and legacy of Alexander Hamilton on the bicentennial of his death.
(10) Congratulate the Syracuse Univ. Orange Men's Lacrosse Team on winning the championship.
(11) Congratulate the Le Moyne College Dolphins Men's Lacrosse Team on winning the championship.
(12) Establish the 225th Anniversary of the American Revolution Commemorative Program.
(13) Name post office after Sergeant Riayan A. Tejeda.
(14) Honor Shirley Chisholm for her service to the nation and express condolences on her death.
(15) Honor John J. Downing, Brian Fahey, and Harry Ford, firefighters who lost their lives on duty.

Only five of Clinton's bills are, more substantive.
(16) Extend period of unemployment assistance to victims of 9/11.
(17) Pay for city projects in response to 9/11
(18) Assist landmine victims in other countries.
(19) Assist family caregivers in accessing affordable respite care.
(20) Designate part of the National Forest System in Puerto Rico as protected in the wilderness preservation system.

She has a nice list, but note that these are The Fact's straight from the Senate Record; Therefore, it is not made up.

Now, It is time to post Senator Obama's record from the Library of Congress.I have to mention that Senator Obama's list is too substantive, one is coalesced to categorize. Since its alot, remember you can go to the Library of Congress website, and check it out yourself, but I am just summarizing his first 8 months.

During Senator Obama's first 8 eight months of elected service he sponsored over 820 bills.

He introduced 233 bills regarding healthcare reform,
125 bills on poverty and public assistance,
112 bills on crime fighting,
97 economic bills,
60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills,
21 ethics reform bills,
15 gun control,
6 veterans affairs and many others.
In his first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These included:
(1)the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 that became LAW,
(2)The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act that became LAW, (3)The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act that passed the Senate,
(4)The 2007 Government Ethics Bill that became LAW,
(5)The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill that is in committee just to name a few.

In all since he entered the U.S. Senate, Senator Obama has written 890 bills and co-sponsored another 1096. An impressive record, for someone who supposedly has no legislative record.  Read the facts and not emotion.

If Hilliary DOES get the nomination-- I will be voting for McCain.....

if the dems want the white house-- Obama is the ONLY choice.  Hilliary is the ice princess that is touting HER HUSBAND"S RECORD--- the biggest farce in all of this is her "experience".... experience doing WHAT???? picking curtains.

Also can someone buy her another suit---sick of the royal blue--- give me a break she is a MULTI MILLIONAIRE!!!!
At my caucus site in Nebraska, I saw the coalition of a cross-section of my community (blue collar, white collar, less educated, more educated, white, African American, Latino/a, Native American, young, old) that would foreshadow Obama's wins in Maryland, Virginia, and Wisconsin tonight. No one reported on his ability to cut way into Senator Clinton's base voters at that time, but to any of us witnessing a remarkable turnout in one mid-city neighborhood in Omaha, we knew he had accomplished something remarkable in this "red" state. The women on Obama's side outnumbered those on Clinton's side at least four fold; labor union guys proudly stood for Obama. The talking heads and pollsters have not been registering this phenomenon accurately. Who has a  land line anymore? No one ever tries to poll me on my cell phone. Even today, they were calling for a "too close to call" race in Wisconsin, and boy were they wrong. As a UW-Madison graduate, I was pleased to see the margin of victory for Senator Obama (66% to 33% at this point). it isn't words that Obama is  speaking--it is truth, and it is resonating with the American electorate.
Facts and figures first, not opinion or blather.  I've spent five minutes searching MSNBC on Wisconsin, and I've yet to locate a statistic -- either percentage-of-votes or delegate count.

Tom from New York

I am wondering when will "experience crybabies" come up to their senses and realize that in total elective office, Obama leads Hillary. Abraham Lincolon was president for 8 years and a Congressman like Obama for 2 years, so in terms of who has been in eelective office Obama leads even Lincolon. Read about this at http://jaydiatribe.blogspot.com/2007/03/barack-obamas-inexperience.html .
I am unable to comprehend why Obama is being continuously bashed for his lack of experience. If experience is what America wants, then either vote for McCain or change the Constitution to give Bush a 3rd time.
I am sure the voters of Wi. and Hawaii have taken note of this and rejected the characterization of Obama as too inexperienced.
THANK YOU, ALL YOU OBAMA SUPPORTERS OUT THERE,YES WE CAN!
I am a Hillary supporter, but may be switching to Obama.  He seems cool and unflappable, as Hillary gets louder and more shrill with each loss.  We need a cool, intelligent head in the Whitehouse.  What a refreshing change!
AMEN sam.  I'll vote republican before I VOTE for a racist obama.  He's a joke.  People wake up, the man
is a fraud.  If some how he would beat CLINTON he will
never beat McCain.
Hillary - your next move - Divorce Bill !!!

Go Obama!!
BARACK THE VOTE!

Obama '08

P.S. Chris Matthews should be ashamed of himself. . . talk about a sorry stunt.
I think that it is great that our country realizes it needs a change. Obama has given many people hope. He may not be able to change as much as he wants if he is elected, but I feel with my vote in him, someone is atleast trying. I think that the fact that the young people and the educated people are flocking to the poles to vote for him is a sign that these are not false hopes, that something can be done.
I am a 50 year old white  and I can not contain my enthusiam for Barack Obama. He is the man to bring us together and heal the wounds of the Bush Presidency.
Clinton has taken to ignoring defeats and just moves on to the next state acting as if what happened earlier in the day is of no account.  Imagine if you had been a Clinton volunteer or contributor in Wisconsin.  She could have taken 30 seconds of her Ohio speach to at least thank those who gave their time and money for her in Wisconsin.  But no, in Billary land Wisconsin is now just another state that doesn't matter.

Obama was smart to go ahead and start talking before Hillary finished after it became clear that all she was doing was her latest stump speech without a word about Wisconsin.

Here is AP's lead line of their story about today's contest:  "Barack Obama cruised past a fading Hillary Rodham Clinton in the Wisconsin primary Tuesday night, gaining the upper hand in a Democratic presidential race for the ages."

Fading indeed.   But just like the horror movies where the monster keeps rising from the dead we know it isn't really over yet.

Send this message to Chris Matthews: that was a cheap a** stunt you pulled on the State Sen. from Texas. Demanding that he list Obama legislative record was patently unfair. If you did that to curry favor with the Clintons, to make up for the "sexist" comments you've been accused of, you are as much of a slimeball as the Clintons. Shame on you, sir. Shame on you!.

Thank goodness, Keith Olbermann saw through you. We await your answer to his question.

Hades called... your cell is ready.
Barack Obama offers a bright contrast to Bill & Hill...
We are tired of the politics of minimizing, diverting attention(notice how Hillary didn't even congradulate Barack)-Just like Bush.
Hillary wants to accomplish little things.
She doesn't want us to believe in real change.
She's a downer.
Thank God for a candidate like Barack Obama.
BTW- Bill Clinton isn't the same guy I remember in the 90's.
He was always a bright light then.
He seems rather dark and angry lately...
Democrats who switch the the Republican party because Obama is black should stay there. Never come back. You are fake and the opposite of what the party stands for. It's time to look in the mirror and no thy self.
Message for McCain - to insure you and the GOP win the election it only makes sense to get the best choice and get a well respected black man with integrity and principals as your VP runnaing mate.  It is time for you and this country to draft Colin Powell!  He's intelligent, a decision maker and a former 4 star retired US Army general who got the job done in the Gulf war!  That's what you call effective leadership. Plus he is known and respected by the black voters as well as others in the USA.  Now is the time to provide leadership not the fluff that comes from the Democrats!

Lt. Col J. C. King (retired US Army officer)
I just heard Tim Russert say that Clinton "won the women over 50 deomgraphic"; he later rephrased this to call it the "elderly women vote."  I'm forming a new group in Russert's honor:  The "ELBOWs".  It stands for "ELderly Barack Obama Women."  The first thing we're goin to do is hnag up Russert by his socks.  The next, is change the polling preferences of that demographic.
Obama gets nomination i will change party's and vote
McCain, and i think alot of  Democrat's will change party's in the end.
