A Clinton surrogate, a Dem divide?

Posted: Wednesday, February 20, 2008 10:12 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Abby Livingston
Oh snap! Who needs a Rottweiler when you’ve got surrogates?

Tom Buffenbarger president of the machinists' union (International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers) was the the latest in a string of Clinton junkyard dogs unleashed upon Obama. Prior to Hillary Clinton’s speech last night in Youngstown, Ohio, Buffenbarger delivered nothing short of an Obama diatribe.

While campaign introductions typically sing the praises of the upcoming candidate, Buffenbarger's speech barely mentioned Clinton until the conclusion. It was all about Obama, and it was laced with venom and ad hominems.

VIDEO: Clinton supporter Tom Buffenbarger attacks Sen. Barack Obama during a campaign event in Youngstown, Ohio.

Buffenbarger called Obama a “thespian,” and he sarcastically referred to the junior senator from Illinois as a “wunderkind.” He compared Obama to “Janus, the two-faced Roman god of ancient times.” And he pleaded with the crowd to boo Obama’s labor record.

Early in his speech, Buffenbarger asked, “So now we have a decision to make. Will we rely on the Harvard Law Review editor? The silver-tongued orator from Kansas, Hawaii and Illinois? The man in love with the microphone?”

Taking off the gloves, he said, “Barack Obama is no Muhammad Ali. He took a walk every time there was a tough vote in the Illinois State Senate. He took a walk more than a 130 times. That's what a shadow boxer does. All the right moves. All the right combinations. All the right footwork. But he never steps into the ring.”

But it was Obama supporters for whom Buffenbarger saved his most vitriolic contempt, and he proved that the Democratic Party’s coalition is nothing if not fragile. Channeling Howard Beale from the movie "Network," he yelled into the microphone, “Give me a break! I've got news for all the latte-drinking, Prius- driving, Birkenstock-wearing, trust fund babies crowding in to hear him speak! This guy won't last a round against the Republican attack machine. He's a poet, not a fighter.”

With all this trash talk, who needs a Thrilla in Manilla?

If Ms. Clinton wants the nomination then she should stick to the issues, show who she is to the electorate.   The negative ads are old news used by those that adhere to old politics.

Hope is the message because Americans have been battered by fear and Americans are tired.   Ms. Clinton can't respond based on the issues because she and Obama share many of the same ideas but they do not share the same vision.

All great movements start as ideas and evolve.  Ms. Clinton has great ideas but they have not captured the spirit of the electorate because she does not show her passion and her vision.
So how much did Hillary pay this fruitcake?  He's a great surrogate.  I hope she keeps him out there, I am now more inspired than ever to vote for Obama.  Thanks Mr. Buffenbarger, you're the best!
Oh come on!  Give it up Hillary!  I am a huge supporter, but it is time to graciously step aside.  Your legacy is at stake.  Do you want to be remembered as a mean spirited loser or someone who helped bring the party together?  And remember, Obama might very well lose in November; then after helping to unify the party, in 2012 you would have another chance to be The Comeback Kid.
Obama has sucked people in similar to the modern day TV evangalists. When the spell finally gets broke, the democrats are going to wake up with a huge hang over. The media has raped Hillary Clinton and the american people approve of it. It sickens and sadens me to see what the democrats have done to the Clintons. Bill was the best president of our generation. He has recieved hateful disrespect for it by democrats. I have no choice but to campaing support and vote for McCain now that Hillary is almost out.
I have seen more scathing commentary about Hillary Clinton in this blog than in that speech about Obama.
The fact is that Obama is a good speaker which you could akin to thespian. I am not defending this speech but I am defending free speech. I have constantly been exposed to "trash talk" about Hillary, most of it personally slanderous having nothing to do with her policy or ability. Questions about her "crying" or "ability to control her husband" are not challenges that Obama has had to face. His supporter are even trying to give his wife a free ride. " for the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country" and an inability to to commit to supporting the democratic nominee who ever it might be are divisive. I am not happy about a lot of things going on in our country today. Fiscal irresponsibilty both personal and in government. Erosion of personal liberties, rising healthcare, etc. But I still feel proud of my country.
Oh, what a junkward dog! This guy is so desperate for his girlfriend Hillary. He thinks America loves attack dogs or nasty bullies. If so, the office of the president should be called Office of the Bully.
I drive a 2001 VW Golf with 107,000 miles, work in a middle school, and wish I could afford Starbucks everyday. I have a masters degree, and debt to be repaid. I think that this guy is just another in the line of Clinton surrogates who make her sound more and more like a Republican.
How do these attacks on Obama supporters broaden Senator Clinton's base of support?  It's ok big guy, you and your coalition of white women over 65 can still pull this thing out!  Keep spewing venom!  It's what this country is hungry for!  Gravel for press secretary 08!
the clintons truly are hilarious. They attack Obama for being black and it backfires. They attack Obama over some words he borrowed from a friend and the voters don't care. They attack Obama over not accepting the Wisconsin debate (which was a ploy to get Clintons face on TV for free if anything) and he wins Wisconsin by 17 points. Now they attack him with some guy most of America hasd never even heard of and guess what? they just come out looking more desperate than before if thats possible...
this guy is not the only one---tweety bird matthews started on obama last night and joe scarborough started this morning----mika as usual was lucky she wasn't ducktaped to shut up.Again the media has decided who will be the president.Mccain--the hero worship has begun. And Cindy Mccain went after big mouth michelle yesterday. The congressman from texas sing obamas praises could not name one thing obama had accomplished in the senate---matthews made a fool out of him
I think Buffenbarger is secretly an Obama supporter.

That's the only reason I can come up with for his embarrassing diatribe. He's only helping people on the fence between Obama and Clinton jump over to the Obama side.

No one likes Billary -- or any surrogates -- on the attack. Look what attacking Obama got Hillary in Wisconsin. A big, fat 17-point margin of OWNAGE: http://www.nationalscold.com
Wasn't it Hillary who popularized Birkenstocks back in the early 90s campaigning with Bill?
I believe this guy just insulted his beloved Hillary in that trash talk
I do not drink lattes, drive a Prius or wear Birkenstocks. I had no trust fund. I am a 61-year-old self-employed white mother and wife from Tennessee. I identify with and admire Hillary Clinton. For the good of my world, my country, my family and myself, I have voted for and am sending what little money I can spare to Barack Obama.
Soldarity:unity (as of a group or class) that produces or is based on community of interests, objectives, and standards

Someone in the machinists needs to put this guy in his place. He's acting worse than stern.
I can stand up to those who fuel the negative when I speak of Barack Obama however, Hillary always finds someone who states HER feelings & thoughts for her, that's become obvious and we're already tired of it; go back to the school yard fights of name calling and I say ..'sticks 'n stones ...'
All I can say is..... DESPARATE!

Obama will unite the Dems, Indies, and Obamacans this Fall.
How absolutely disgusting.  Are these the people Clinton wants representing her?  Is THAT really what she's all about?  Unrivaled hate and vitrolic disgust?

That's no president.
The most troubling thing about Obama's 130 "present votes"?  The fact that Clinton and her followers know full well there's nothing to it.  The New York Times (which has been doing Clinton's heavy lifting) only found 1 in 130 where they were able to suggest a selfish political motive for Obama.  And that isn't even the one that Clinton is pounding him on.  This nonsense has been debunked so many times it isn't even funny, and yet they keep coming back to it.
Dr. Mr. Buffenbarger,
I'll give you 36 million ($) reasons why you're wrong about Sen. Obama.

Oh, and shadow boxers don't usually go 10-0.
Classy Clintons.  Real classy.  Pathetic.
When asked if the campaign shared this clown's views, the Clinton camp merely said "we are proud to have his support."  So, tear down the party front runner if that's what you think you need to do, Hillary, but keep in mind that it is hard to look like a winner when you LOSE virtually every race.

Your days are numbered and many of us are enjoying watching you and your bumbling campaign implode in historic fashion.  While attacking your opponents is the fun part of the campaign for you, watching your political career disintegrate before our eyes is the fun part for most of us....
He forgot to add "<$50,000 blue-collar workers, high school graduates, caucasians, and females".

You know, the ones who used to be in HRC's camp.
What a scumbag. This is one of the people whose support Hillary touts? Why should we vote for her again?
I had the t.v muted when Sen. Clinton was giving her speech, and was shocked when Sen. Obama took the podium I thought he was being rude. I just heard an explanation, Axelrod is Brilliant!!

This Obama supporter likes regular coffee, has an idle suv, and no trust fund just a mortgage. I can donate another $25.00
I think everyone was waiting for some sort of attack, and yet as they come, Barack Obama handles it with dignity and class.
When the wheels come off, it is ugly!
When will they realize that people want a change from this type of cut-throat divisive politics
Kind of funny to have a union hack support Hillary when The Clinton's have never been friends with unions
It's the time for change. it's the time to change from republican to democratic. it's the time to change from war to peace. It's the time to change from waste to save. It's time to change from our government negative to positive.  We change our goveernment to the leader of the world.  We use our money and manpower to help our own country and the world.
I heard this man and was shocked when I saw he was introducing Hilary. I originally thought he must be speaking from a Republican event.

p.s. Amen KSP of Medford MA!
wow!you obamians can't stand it when someone goes negative towards your candidate. did everyone miss the part about magtag, the amount of money obama received from the owners of maytag plant and how he stabbed the workers in the back.I have been a democrat all all of my life and have done very much campaign work ,but I will not vote for Obama.
The Clinton's goal is to get back into the White House...they feel that it is their right and is due to them for all of the time they spent in politics...she will stop at nothing and step on anyone - including trying to "steal" the Democrate convention - in order to return to power...and I was a Bill Clinton supporter.

They have become possessed by the power of the White House and absolute power corrupts absolutely
This "thespian" has written and introduced over 800 substantal bills into the US Senate in his first term. Sen. Clinton, in the same time period, has only 20 to her name. Who is the talker and who is the worker?
He sounds like an extremely unpleasant man. This just shows how completed DESPERATE the Clinton campaign is. They are grasping at straws trying to do anything in their power to stop Obama's momentum. His attacks and insults on Obama supporters were not only tasteless, but were also not based on reality. Obama's coalition of voters is large and extremely diverse. Hillary's  surrogate's remarks came off sounding both petulant and pathetic, and will only hurt Senator Clinton in the long run.
"I've got news for all the latte-drinking, Prius- driving, Birkenstock-wearing, trust fund babies crowding in to hear him speak!"

I can't afford to drink lattes. Can't afford a Prius either but would like to own one and did have a pair of Birks until I spilled paint on them. Now they serve as work around the house footwear. But I do know Obama is the right candidate to defeat McCain. I imagine if this Buffenbarger dirtbag is the president of the machinist union his kids are in line for a trust fund, as for me I'm trying to figure out how to send my 18 year old to college. Nice try pal....next?

Lattes are delicious. What's your point?
I believe that Hillary would be the best nominee.  For one thing between her and her husband it would be like to Presidents in the white house.  I think Pbama is to young and he is a show off.  You will find that he will let more races take over the US.  He will not know what to do when it gets right down to buisness.  Hillary has been there and seen it.  It is fun for Obama being recognised right now.  It is fun and games.  He is like a little boy at a birthday party.  You will find I am right.  Deep inside of him and back in his ancestory their is bad feelings for us white people.  He will remember many things and when something does not go like he thinks it should.  WATCH OUT!!! Hillary has given us years of experience.  I believe she needs her chance to make the changes and I do believe she will.  We do not need a wet behind the ears little boy in their.  Hillary needs no one.  He needs his wife who acts like MAMA.
Way to mention taking a walk less than a week after Senator Clinton failed to vote on the telecom immunity bill.  Complete lack of perspective.
Funny how the Clinton campaign is getting knocked out by this supposed "shadow boxer".
If the shoe was on the other foot the Clintons would be calling for Obama to step aside.

But here the Clintons are willing to destroy Obama to try to turn this mess around. What they seem to miss is not only will they damage their party but also damage themselves. Prior to this campaign I am sure Hillary could easiliy have become Majority Leader in the Senate in short order. But she has lost a lot already and if this turns uglier the Clinton name will be mud.
Maybe Hillary should marry this guy.....
He seems more man then Bill could ever be....
yawn...

But, responding appropriately to this kind of attack is exactly the skill Sen Obama's campaign needs to practice right now.  Mr. Buffenbarger is right about one thing; the Rep attack machine will be relentless this fall.  Sen Obama needs to start working out his own "there you go again..." responses.

A little more content on what "change" looks like would be most welcome.
um wow. While I like Hillary.. this guy makes me kinda queezy. This will turn more votes to Obama. What is happening to this campaign??? they keep shooting themselves in the foot.
I don't see how this story isn't making headlines. Mr. Buffenbarger has clearly insulted a large part of the democratic base, and I demand an apology from him, as well as the Clinton campaign.
I'm sorry for those of you offended. But in all honesty, I believe that everyone has gotten a little dirty lately. I have never heard the insults so venemous toward HRC supporters ever before in most blogs. You know what I mean. There is alot of hatred. It is not necessary. This is a campaign for the Democratic Party. This is not a campaign against the Bush enablers yet. We can be proud of both candidates and listen to each other, REALLY listen
The Democrat party will be divided, just seen on tv, democrat white men are going to support McCain, so Obama supporters don't count your chicken before they hatch. With out that support your ship will sink. HA HA and don't think women for Hillary will vote for him either. Can't wait to see if he is on the ticket and a new poll is done, you are going to be so surprised. Democrat for Mccain if Hillary is not the nominee. Check out cnn, just heard the news about the white male vote.
Well, hello everyone! I've just sat and read all the comments from those who are also in serious danger of being called mudslinger, and who have made a habit of jumping to conclusions about Hillary Clinton, and her alleged "machine."
To address Tom Buffenbarger, president of the machinists' union, and his commentary, I will say this in his defense. He can say whatever he likes. Perhaps people are feeling hurt because his frustration was vented in a politically incorrect way, stereotyping members of the general public. Regardless, he can say what he likes. And, by the way, the reason he sounds venomous is because *HE* is being venomous—not Hillary Clinton. He can speak for himself. I’m willing to bet that the frustration he is venting at the Obama juggernaut is not a singular frustration. I’m also willing to bet that it’s not unshared, in part because the media has had a disproportionate level of criticisms levied against Clinton, while being fairly velvet gloved in their handling of Obama.
It’s no surprise that I am a supporter of Hillary Clinton, and also no surprise that I will continue to be after Obama  “wins.” She is the best choice, in my opinion, which is no less valid than any other opinion of the plentiful Obama supporters blogging on this site. Obama is defensive when asked to account for his promises to the public on issues of policy, and has already taken the air of entitlement that all big men politicians have before they run for the general election. To me, he’s not the “black candidate,” or the “candidate of change” media coverage stresses. He’s just another man in a suit. Clinton has a credible track record and a personal philosophy that is laudable and focused on the greater good for all citizens, and in no small way for women citizens (after all, 50% of the population is NOT a minority. We have a strong and clear need for acknowledgement).
As far as the claim that this divide in supporters will be bad for the party, and that Clinton, like a Democratic-Yoko-Ono, will be to blame for “breaking up the band” is ridiculous. We are, above and beyond party line, Americans. We can vote for whomever we choose. It’s not about any grand ol’ party. It’s about how we treat each other—including how Obama supporters treat Clinton.

The guy does have a point. Obama has almost no experience and on top of that the medias been giving him a free ride. I'll get behind Obama and support him but I am REALLY worried,
