McCain paints Obama as too hawkish?

Posted: Wednesday, February 20, 2008 1:04 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Andy Merten

It’s slightly counter-intuitive that Obama could sound more hawkish than McCain, but when it comes to Pakistan, that may be the case. Last night at his Wisconsin victory speech in Columbus, Ohio, McCain came out swinging against what he perceives as the Illinois senator’s naiveté of international affairs and world events.

Providing a potential sneak preview of his general election talking points, he asked, “Will we risk the confused leadership of an inexperienced candidate who once suggested bombing our ally, Pakistan?” The likely nominee’s comments referenced a counter-terrorism policy speech that the presidential hopeful gave in August in Washington, DC. While lamenting what he perceived as the Bush administration’s misguided war in Iraq and its distraction from al-Qaeda strongholds in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the Illinois senator struck an offensive tone.

“Let me make this clear. There are terrorists holed up in those mountains, that murdered 3,000 Americans,” he said, continuing with resolve: “If we have actionable intelligence about high-valued terrorist targets and President Musharraf will not act, we will.”

Obama at the time was talking about attacking known al-Qaeda terrorist targets, not suggesting mounting an attack on the country or government of Pakistan. Still, he caught flak shortly thereafter from some on both sides of the aisle for discussing the merits of attacking a sovereign ally.

And McCain saw no distinction, while speaking with reporters, today. “That’s still bombing Pakistan,” he said when pressed on the topic. McCain then sidestepped, discussing the merits of diplomacy. “The first thing you do is you don’t tell people what you’re going to do; you make plans, and you work with the other country that is your ally and friend, which Pakistan is.”

Is McCain not the guy who sang "Bomb Bomb Iran" ?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-zoPgv_nYg

Ha! Ha! I can't believe the non-issues Billary and McCain have to make up to 'fight' the Obama movement.
Sounds like McCain is already starting to fret at Obama nipping at his heels.

It's official, McCain has just announced Obama as the primary winner.
"The first thing you do is you don’t tell people what you’re going to do."  Gee, where have I heard this one before?  And we did hit a target in Pakistan, and the move was largely praised.
OH OBAMA IS CHANGE. HE WONT KILL INNOCENTS JUST THE GUILTY those bombs are so smart even smarter when used by barack<SOUNDS GOOD TO ALL YOU Peaceniks, bomb bomb bomb bomb packistan oh its only wrong to sing bomb bomb bomb bomb iran MACAIN A REAL MAN A REAL HERO not some obama come lately
The last thing America or this world needs is listening to the Senator John McCain talk about the merits of diplomacy.
Pakistan is only our ally as long as Mushareff stays in power right? And that seems to be a bit of a problem recently. Regardless of Pakistan's stance as our ally, Obama's statement is what I would expect from our Commander and Chief. Attacking terrorists is not attacking a soveriegn nation, it's attacking a mountain range and I would hope Pakistan would support such a move, or didn't Bush years ago say something about governments that harbor terrorists? Can we be clear in our position? Consistent at all? Obama at least sounds like a leader of a country that got attacked, McCain sounds like someone who's forgotten who we are specifically at war with, that is Al Queda, not Pakistan. But if Pakistan is harboring Al Queda, well then, shouldn't we stand up for our beliefs and demand Pakistan's help in getting Bin Laden? And Obama did make it clear he would first go to Pakistan and only if they refused to help would he proceed to go after Bin Laden (we're talking a smal window of opportunity here, if he waits for days to get "real" approval Bin Laden will have fled again!)
MACAIN POINTED OUT OBAMAs INCONSISTANCY  and ON WAR AND TERRORISM but then again he is all over the field talk to our enimies and bomb our allies get your spin down MACAIN WILL NEVER THINK OF BARACK AS HAWKISH OBAMA SHOULDNT THINK IT because hes against war or is he for war or only wars we can win like BUSHIE
"“Will we risk the confused leadership of an inexperienced candidate who once suggested bombing our ally, Pakistan?” "

It was good enough for the last 7 years, and by all indications, you plan to continue with Prezdunce Bush's highly confused policies. So what's your point, John?
THATS MSNBZZZZ announcing the winner MACAIN will take on whomever
How about the news of the CIA bombing Pakistan last week in a successful operation. Even George Bush has criticized Obama about saying this about Pakistan. Who actually wants to fight Al Qaeda?

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/02/19/cia-operation-similar-to-_n_87433.html
This flap flopping king of wars.... Hypocrites should vote for him. If he is the staunchest supporter of the Iraq war and calls Obama too hawkish, this guy has lost your brain somewhere as he rolled in his Straight Talk Express. Bomb, bomb, bomb... That is what I was thinking when I read this.
Not everyone who's against the war in Iraq is a "peacenik".

And I agree with John M.: we just hit a target inside Pakistan, only informing their government after we'd launched the operation, and it was a success that was touted by the President. Is McCain so tin-eared that he's going to take swipes at Obama at the expense of the sitting President of his own party, whose war effort he supports?
Someday, if the right wing ever regains it sanity, it will reason beyond the level of a three y.o. and understand that not wishing for wars of conquest with non-threatening nations is not quite the same thing as being a "peacenik."

Iraq had no nuclear weapons. Pakistan does. Learn the difference. When the mujadeen take over Pakistan, and it's weapons, I suppose the right wing will want to invade Mexico.
Honestly I am happy for Mccain to ride with this to the GE. Run with it John Mclaren.
Go tell the average american that if ou have actionable intelligence and that your so called "ally" won't act, that you will be making plans and won't bomb away.
Good position for any democrat to be in actually. I for one don't wanna see HRC or BHO painted as naive /weak on national security.
Since he recognizes no distinction, I expect McCain's condemnation of the CIA to be forthcoming: http://edition.cnn.com/2008/US/01/31/alqaeda.death/index.html
EVERYTHING IS NON ISSUE NON STORY ,STEAL WORDS THATS OK ,SUPPORT JFK WHO WAS A RACIST OK ,NEVER WORE A UNIFORM OK,BOMB PACKISTAN OK OBAMAWANNABES ALWAYS HAVE IT THEIR WAY THE MICKY DEES OF CANAIDATES,A CHICKEN IN EVERY POT ABORTIONS for some not for others no gay rights i support gays round and round i once said ask not what youR country can do for youbut what you can do for it,jack and i were friends i didnzt steal it
Is the McCain campaign being run by a Hillary person?  Seriously, he's already starting off on the same bad foot she did.

Does he not realize that we just attacked a terrorist camp in Pakistan, WITHOUT the approval of Musharraf, a few weeks ago?
Well, since President Bush did bomb Pakistan recently without the permission of the Pakistani government and killed a militant by doing so, I am not quite certain why Senator McCain is making this an issue.

Is Senator McCain saying he disagrees with Senator Obama's stance (which apparently President Bush listened to and agreed with since President Bush's actions are exactly what Senator Obama suggested)?
Huh?

Heaven forbid we go after those who attacked us to begin with.
that's hilarious!  we just "bombed" pakistan the other day to kill that al qaeda leader and no one had a problem with it.  of course we're going to go after the bad guys wherever they are.  we're already doing it now so there's no real mystery that we're going to do it later, senator mccain.

nice spin, but the good senator from arizona will have to come up with something better to pull the wool over the eyes of the american people come november.

bomb bomb bomb bomb bomb iran... (mccain quote)
Oh, I forgot that the reason the U.S. decided to do the job of bombing pakistian and killing a commander is because Bush is as desperate for a legacy as Hillary is for the presidency. He should ahve done much of what he is doing this year when he was elected, but he waited until he became a lame duck dude. That is all about legacy.
This is a new tactic from the Republicans to influence the undecided voters to vote for Obama, they are trying to influence the course of this election in favor of the Obama camp, because they know that Obama will be a feast for them easy to eat in the general election.
To understand more the dirty tricks and the war Republicans are waging against the Clinton's camp please read this article:

Wow McCain is now a diplomat ? THIS IS BIG NEWS!! Is it on youtube yet ? lol
McCain's big argument was that you don't tell the enemy what you will do, and that is a fundimental of potential millitary action.

If that's the case, then why did he and the current administration talk about invading Iraq leading up to it, even Bush telling Saddam on International TV that we were about to invade any minute.

McCain has also talked about bombing Iran, but that wasn't a problem, so what's he arguing about with Obama here over Pakistan, a country Bush just dropped bombs in days ago?!?!?!?

McCain also had one of his handlers brushing dandruff off his back during that press conference, totally disgusting to say the least.  The old man can't even clean himself up before the first press conference of the friggin' day.  I can only hope he managed to changed his colostomy bag and diaper.
It's bizarre that anyone would think Obama's comments on Pakistan anything other than consistent with the same foreign policy that launched the invasion of Afghanistan.  Doesn't anyone remember Bush saying, "We will attack any country that knowingly harbors terrorists"?  I'm not sure how I feel about that, but McCain, especially with his record of promoting ill-conceived invasions, sounds like a fool and a hypocrite.
John McCain is an idiot.  We just took out an Al-Qaeda leader in Pakistan.  Response from McCain???  Crickets.  Obama is saying we should do the same thing if we spot Bin Laden.  WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH THAT???  This makes me think McCain is senile.
I tried to post this yesterday but somehow my posts aren't showing up.  Michelle Obama's statement (political mis-step about her husbands possible nomination as the first time she's been proud of American in her adult life is EXACTLY the kind of thing that the republicans are going to take, use, and re-play to America.  Her statement turned me off completely and I'm sure most American's would be turned off to a statement by a possible first lady excaliming that she hasn't been a proud American before this election.  I'm afraid Obama's arrogance will lose the general election for we democrats.  I just can't figure out WHY people can't get over their personal feelings about Hillary to see that she would be a much more effective president and a much better general election candidate.  It's time we started picking the BEST PERSON for the job not the person we would most want to have a beer with.  If Hillary doesn't get nominated I have only one choice but to confirm that WE THE PEOPLE are just plain stupid.  Why are so many people willing to throw away a known entity who has proven herself for someone who just makes promises.  Read the Newsweek article about Obama.  I read one article that said the only person the Media likes better than Obama is John McCain.  They are already starting to turn on him and he isn't ready.  He stumbles when he's under pressure

This is an example of either too much medication or not enough.  Poor thing.
AHH the liberal chicken hawks are as bad as the conservitive chicken hawks if MACAIN HAD BEEN PRES HE WOULD HAVE GOTTEN RID OF SADAMM WHO IF YOU ASKED IRAQS THEY WOULD TELL YOU TORTURE HURTS BY WHOEVER IS DOING IT. MACAIN WAS TORTURED, WHERE WAS OBAMAS MILITARY SERVICE EVEN BUSH HID IN THE NATIONAL GUARD, BOMBING PACKISTAN ANOTHER NATION THAT NEVER ATTACKED THE US .OBAMMAWANNABEE ARE WARMONGERS OF THE WORST KIND
McCain loves to talk about Obama. Here are some things he never talks about:

1) Sealing the border

2) Abortion

3) Tax reform
All of you are pathetic. Every single one of you hates Bush, but when he does something that Obama made mention of in a previous briefing session, you give him praise? Isn't that a direct reflection of your own contradictions? Your basically saying that "What Bush does is stupid and wrong... unless a liberal minority leader also wants to do it..." What is wrong with all of you? Now you're saying that since McCain is a republican like Bush they will have the same outcome. But Bush just did something that you support, and that would make an indirect linkk to McCain doing something you like... Confusing right? But that is exactly what you pathetic idiots are saying. I am voting for McCain. A Democracy, by definition, is rule by the majority. McCain is a majority leader. Obama is a minority leader. If ANYONE votes for Obama they are undermining the basic principles and doctrines of what our country is supposed to be.
VOTE HILLIARY OUT IN NY AS SENATOR SHE ISNT EVEN SUPPORTED BY HER OWN PARTY ELECT A REPUBLICAN NEXT TIME DUMMIES
I have read a ton of Blogs this morning to see that Obama supporters have come out strong to defend his record in Senate. I love it.
And now McCain is saying Obama is a hawk? WOW. this is the same McCain who want 100 years in Iraq, flip -flopped on torture just be be the nominee, flip-flopped on tax cuts, Loses his temper @ the drop of a hat and cant talk his way out of a paper bag?
SAME ARGUMENT AS BUSH IN IRAQ ,PACKISTAN NEVER ATTACKED THE US DUMMIES IRAQ NEVER ATTACKED THE US ONLY THEIR F15s
Obama wouldn't know a fighter-wing, from a buffalo wing.
Who's he trying to kid?
Get em' John!
If Hillary's not in the race, you get MY vote!
I remember John McCain saying "I will follow al Queda to the gates of hell". I guess the gates of hell are at the Pakistan border. John didn't say he would go through them. I don't understand why McCain thinks Obama seeking justice is wrong.

John McCain's equations:

Pakistan + al Queda + 3000 dead americans + $1B in US aid + nukes - women's rights = friend

Iran + oil + maybe wants nukes + 0 al Queda + decent women's rights (in the middle east) = bomb them into the stone age

Obama's equations:

Pakistan + al Queda + 3000 dead americans + $1B in US aid + nukes - women's rights = justice (bomb al Queda) + give me my d@%& money back

Iran + oil + maybe wants nukes + 0 al Queda + decent women's rights (in the middle east) = we'll talk as long as u don't act stupid.
Proof that McCain is not the straight shooting guy he claims to be.  Obama did not say he will bomb an ally.  He said, if it is known that Pakistan is harboring Al-Qaeda and is not going to act on it, then he would.  I think if Pakistan was in fact harboring terrorists it would be fair to say that they were not an ally of ours.  How is it that going to war with Iraq (which had nothing to do with 9/11) is good but taking out Al-Qaeda is bad?  McCain is out of touch and like Hillary, will say anything to scare people.  Maybe I am wrong though.  McCain, please tell us ignorant masses what to think, will you?
But haven't we already done what Obama recommended? From the Wash Post "In the predawn hours of Jan. 29, a CIA Predator aircraft flew in a slow arc above the Pakistani town of Mir Ali... Having requested the Pakistani government's official permission for such strikes on previous occasions, only to be put off or turned down, this time the U.S. spy agency did not seek approval."
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23228197/
I just don't get it. Why hasn't McCain kept up with the news? Maybe we just prefer our GOP candidates to be ignorant.
Musharraf is a dictator. Why are we trying so hard to keep this guy in power? Our ally? He doesn't go after Al-Qaida in his own country. Bhutto anyone? The sooner we cut ties with him the sooner we can regain some degree of credibility and make progress against the people we're actually supposed to be fighting.
Message to those war loving republicans...why aren't your kids fighting and dying in a war you love so much...this always shuts the chickenhawk across the road up...you know the type, they have a flag and a faded yellow support the troops bumper sticker and they don't want their children dying in the sands of arabia...just your kids
Clinton & McCain are very simlilar in that they throw anything to see if that sticks to Obama.
How desperate should you be? LOL
I think this is really smart of Obama. First, it deals with the concern that the D's are soft on terrorism. Second, he is clearly defining our national interest - to rid the war of terrorists, not fight dumb wars. Finally, it puts McCain in the position of defending the war, which served no purpose.
My Friends, I want you all to know, that i'm still fighting the veitcong. My Friends, i'm not worried about no alquida in Iraq or Pakistan. My Friends, get ready & fired Up, i'm taking us back to Veitnam & find those bastards that Water boarded me. My Friend's, if you'll vote me in as President, We'll Win this war against veitnam, Once & for all.

Come on, My Friends, are ya with me, are ya Fired up & Ready to Go back to Veitnam?

This guy is comical & he's the Best, the GOP has to Offer. LMAO!!!!!!!!

Hay KENN, you still Whining? Don't mind answering, i can see it in your Post.
We will finally get some information on how Obama stands on issues, the Republicans are starting to get tough -- the media certainly has given him a pass while attacking Hillary.

Sen Kirk Watson (D) Texas, answered as do all the Obama supporters do to the question "Can you name any of his legislative accomplishments, sir?" asked by MSNBC's Chris Matthews (finally playing Hardball with Obama's surrogates)  Sen. Watson's answer was as summed up by Chris: "he had nothing to say."
(Surprizingly this is video is on line for you to view...don't miss it!)

WELL FOLKS HE DID HAVE SOMETHING...THE SAME OLD SAME OLD WHAT WE HEAR FROM ALL THE OBAMAITES;
"HE WAS EXCITING"  AND  "HE INSPIRED"  THE STUDDERING SEN. WATSON MANAGED TO GET OUT.

THE OBAMA CAMP HAS NOW STATED THAT SEN. WATSON DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO ANSWER.  NOT SO, CHRIS GAVE HIM SEVERAL CHANCES, PLUS A FINAL TIME TO ANSWER INCLUDING DEAD AIR TIME AND SEN. WATSON STAMMERED,
"HE INSPIRED"

WELL JOHN MCCAIN IS NOW POINTING OUT THAT "INSPIRED"
WON'T CUT IT AS COMMANDER IN CHIEF.

OBAMA DOES NOT HAVE FOREIGN POLICY EXPERIENCE.  HE HAS NOT EVEN TRAVELLED TO ENOUGH FOREIGN COUNTRIES.
HILLARY CLINTON HAS EXPERIENCE TALKING WITH AND VISITING FOREIGN DIGNITARIES.

THE CONTRAST BETWEEN SEN. STEPHANIE TUBBS JONES SPEAKING ABOUT HILLARY, AND SEN. KIRK WATSON'S
BEING SPEECHLESS ABOUT OBAMA, WAS STRIKING AND ALL TELLING ABOUT WHAT IS GOING ON IN THE MEDIA.  THIS IS THE FIRST TIME CHRIS HAS PLAYED HARDBALL WITH AN
OBAMA SUPPORTER OR OBAMA PUNDIT.  ASK YOURSELF WHY
HAS THE MEDIA GIVEN OBAMA THIS FREE PASS SO FAR.
ASK WHY IS NORAH O'DONNALD MAKING EXCUSES FOR MICHELE OBAMA'S UNGRATEFUL REMARKS ABOUT -- FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HER ADULT LIFE SHE IS PROUD OF AMERICA.
WE ARE NOT SUPPOSE TO CRITIZE THE OBMAS.  BUT THEY THINK NOTHING OF NASTY ATTACKS AGAINST HILLARY AND HER SPOUSE, A FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.

CHECK OUT OBAMA'S VOTING RECORD;

272/HF 2669 Increase financial aid for college students and reduce subsidies for student loan lenders.  July 20, 2007    OBAMA: DID NOT VOTE
  CLINTON; VOTED YES

209/HR 6  Create a national action plan for reducing oil consumption by 35%...  June 12, 07
OBAMA; DID NOT VOTE     CLINTON; VOTED YES

7/13/07 Vote 247: HR1585 Dorgan Arndt No.2135 as amended, Relative to bringing Osama bin Laden and other leaders of al Qaeda to Justice.
OBAMA; NOT VOTING     CLINTON; VOTED YES
      AMENDEMENT AGREED 87-1
        (12 NOT VOTING)

DO WE UNDERSTAND WHY WE NEED TO SCRUITNIZE OBAMA'S RECORD?   DO WE UNDERSTAND THIS IS MORE THAN BEING EXCITED AND INSPIRED.  WE NEED TO GET INSPIRED TO USE OUR BRAINS AND SEE WHAT OBAMA ISN'T TELLING US ABOUT WHO HE REALLY IS.  WHO IS BEHIND HIM?  WE KNOW THE NEO-CONS WERE BEHIND BUSH (WE LEARNED THAT WHEN IT WAS TOO LATE.) WE HEARD BUSH TELL US HOW INSPIRED HE WAS TO DEMOCRITIZE THE MIDDLE EAST STARTING WITH IRAQ, AND SPREAD FREEDOM AROUND THE WORLD. LOOK WHAT BUSH'S INSPIRATION DID TO OUR COUNTRY.  OBAMA ENDED HIS SPEECH LAST NIGHT WITH "...WE WILL CHANGE THE WORLD!"  LIGHT BULB MOMENT...THINK ABOUT THAT STATEMENT, COMPARE IT TO BUSH'S VISION FOR HIMSELF, HOW HE TRIED TO SPREAD HIS STYLE FREEDOM AROUND THE WORLD????

DOES ANYONE CARE THAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR A  DEMOCRAT NOMINEE WHO IS QUALIFIED TO BE PRESIDENT OF OUR COUNTRY?

mccain luvs to distort the truth or lie altogether. first, he says romney favors cut and run in iraq then he says obama would bomb our ally pakistan. is this guy taking his meds? because his grip on reality is loosening. welcome to crazyworld
McCain will be so easy for Obama to beat. If Obama is gonna go head to head with Obama in November, guess what, Obama needs to start preparing his inaugural speech.

I am confused - The Bush Administration is sending missels into Pakistan to take out high level targets and notifying Pakistan at the last possible minute.  So it sounds like Obama is keeping the same direction as current policy.  Is McCain changing the Bush Policy?
He should bomb Bin-Laden if he is hiding in Pakistan. Maybe then we will finally catch the person responsible for 9/11 instead of going into Iraq, which had nothing to do with 9/11. If McCain is afraid to kill Bin-Laden then it proves he is not fit to be Commander In Chief.
If it ends up McCain vs Barrack, we'll have two candidates with wide appart beliefs and experiences.  Do we vote for a candidate who gives nice speeches, has little experience and is a flaming liberal.  Or, do we vote for a candidate who doesn't give nice speeches, has lots of experience and votes his own mind.  Should be interesting
When do the McCain hugging Bush tee shirts come out for us Obama lovers? McCain is a joke and so is his bleached blond, face lifted wife.
