Hillary: 'It's time to get real'

Posted: Wednesday, February 20, 2008 3:15 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Jessica Turtletaub

In a speech delivered this morning at Hunter College in New York, Clinton dug in her heels and continued to hit home that her campaign is offering the public more than just rhetoric. "It is time to get real, to get real about how we actually win this election and get real about the challenges facing America."

Contrasting her campaign with Obama's and McCain's, Clinton boasted "sound solutions" as opposed to "sound bites," and promised "21st-century solutions" rather than "more of the same old Republican policies." She also questioned Obama’s record and his readiness to tackle what she described as the “toughest job in the world.”

“Americans have a choice to make this election,” she said “and that choice matters. It’s about picking a president who relies not just on words, but on work… We need to make a choice between speeches and solutions. Because while words matter greatly, the best words in the world aren’t enough unless you match them with action.”

It's time for Hillary to step down so Democrats can stop fighting each other and take on McCain.

It's time to unite behind the people's choice - the candidate who's won the most states, the most delegates and the most popular vote.

It's time for the superdelegates to back the people's choice and unite the party.
The reality, Hillary, is that Obama is preferred by most Dems, independents and even a nice little chunk of Republicans to you, dear. Your majority even among your key demographics is getting narrower every day. And Bill needs to get used to the reality that he is no longer the youngish, hip rock star of the Democratic party.  He needs to get over himself.  Americans are looking for 21st century leadership and you ain't it. The window for a Clinton presidency redux is closing fast.

Obama doesn't need you for VP either.  By your own admission, if you appeal most to anyone it's traditional hard core Dems and they'll vote for Obama without you.  He needs someone who makes him even more appealing to independents and if that someone had real military experience that would be even better.  Sen. Jim Webb anyone?

For you, Hillary, getting real means being happy with your admirable career in the senate.  And for Bill it means to stop embarrassing yourself in this campaign and go back to being a well liked and respected x-pres doing good works in public and making money hand over fist in private.  Not a bad life.
NEWS FLASH************NEWS FLASH************NEWS FLASH

To all of Obama's cult followers:  Mr. Obama will not be having any CULT RALLIES TODAY.  Mr. Obama is in On The Job Training (OJT) for How To Get Through A Presidential Debate Without Falling Apart.

He will be on the scene with more Lies tomorrow.
So, she's saying her earlier approach wasn't real?

Here's how she can get real: Instead of finding delegate loopholes to exploit, find ways to help Obama be as tough as possible against McCain, but don't weaken the Democratic party in the process. Announce your endorsement of his candidacy and urge your supporters to embrace Obama.
Yes, it's time. In fact, it's way overdue for reality check on exactly what original ideas that this Obama fad is going to give us. Words? Copied. Policies? Copied. He should be so ashamed of himself, for being a professor himself, he knew full well that he would be kicked out of school, has he been found red-handed of blatant plagiarism.

Obama reminds me so much about the tired GOP lines that bring up the Reagan name again and again. I'm simply stunned by how blind/ignorant his cult fans have been. What kind of Kool Aid they have been drugging themselves?
Sound solutions??
That's why you pork barreled $ 2.2 billion worth of earmark spending bills btw. 2002-2006? (look up at Bloomberg.com)
Also, voting for the Iraq war and providing the benefit of doubt to Bush on Iran AGAIN are solutions??

I am confused! Those record suggest "problems" not "solutions!"
Uuuuuh ?
Hillary ?

You might want to campaign in Texas or Ohion
I hear they're having primaries out there....

Hills, you REALLY can't win the nomination
Let's get real
Does anyone find it odd she is in NY?  Ohio and Texas aren't up next??
Hillary had it.  She gave it to Obama.  Too bad.  So sad.  She would have been a great president.
Both sides have excellent points, IMHO. Obama has been vague in his proposed policies and details about his changes to the point of absurdity, campaigning on a platform of feel-good speeches and vapid idealism. Hillary points to her record, but her plans are moronic, she has no accomplishments, has proven to crumble under pressure, and intends to win by any means necessary, no matter how despicable.

My hope is that when they are both still fighting over the nomination as the lose the general election, the news accurately portrays it as a squandering of an opportunity through political greed and selfishness, and not some BS about America not being ready for a female/black/minority president.
As Jack Nicholson said in the movie AS GOOD AS IT GETS: "Think white and get serious."

Hillary, it's time to go. Salvage whatever is left of our fondness for you and Bill and graciously exit the race. Take a vacation with your big donors, rest up, then come back and lead a coalition of Congressional supporters for the next Commander in Chief: Barack Obama.
>> Does anyone find it odd she is in NY?  Ohio and Texas aren't up next?? <<

Working on the concession speech.
How about this voting record:

Authorization for war in IRAQ:

OBAMA voted NO and CLINTON voted YES!!!!

Please stop it Hillary with your so called experience edge because experience obviously didn't help you in making the right decision on IRAQ or NAFTA!!

Go with GRACE!
All of the negativity, crying and traditional political games are old Hillary and its time bow out with GRACE....but that is if you LOVE the country as much as you say you do.

GOING NEGATIVE WILL NOT WORK! So DO NOT USE RACE, GENDER, or EXPERIENCE! THE people are SICK of it!
I think the first commenter here said it best - "It is time for Hillary to get real and get out of the way."  Oh excuse me, did I just plagiarize there?

The plagiarism charge is just another example of a desperate campaign.  Same with the words bit.  If it were her words which were so mesmerizing, I'm sure she would take the opposing view.  That's how it is with the Clintons - anything to win.  More enjoyable when it's against a Republican, but against a fellow Democrat, and the right one for our times at that, makes me sick.  She was expecting a coronation, and now she's going to get a _cremation_.

So basically she's saying the same old stuff she's been saying since November. And she expects to WIN Ohio and TX with it THIS TIME???

I feel really sorry for her. Go out gracefully while you still have some superdelegates.
Hillary Clinton makes speeches giving detail and outlining rational, innovative and workable policies.Obama uses Oprah Winfrey guidelines as a candidate. The major aim is to make emotional connection with the voters, and to keep the concepts vague so the electors can interpret them any way they like.Using these tactics Obama has found a way to capture voters imaginations. He is a sort of political Creflo Dollar Jr. as to his very ( evangelical style ) effective delivery, and maybe that is why people believe in him.In short a metaphysical political guru, beginning to look like a religion!!
Jim, Carbondale, IL: "Its too bad that she didn't check herself when she voted to go to war without even reading the bill."
Perhaps she was too tired to read the bill after pulling an all-nighter analyzing the polls.
Does a person whose husband was impeached for lying to a Federal Grand Jury really want to accuse someone of casual "plagarism"?

She's getting more and more like GWB everyday. I seriously can't tell them apart anymore...
Hillary for the sake of peace and unity within the DNC please concede and help Obama unite the party before the general election. The American people have spoken and we embrace a vision of unity between political parties and nations. We select Barack Obama as the DNC nominee to defeat Senator Mccain in November and become the next Pres. of the USA...OH YEA I FORGOT TO MENTION I'M A REPUBLICAN....OBAMA 08!!!
Don't you people see that we have a civil war going on as far as politics go. This has to end. Obama will surround himself with very solid advisors and I believe that he will succeed in getting the two sides to cross and become one. Thus creating a new government of Americans and hopefully doing away with Democrats and Republicans period. No other candidate could possibly do that.
I wish to share with you a sobering revelation.   Hillary Clinton argues having some 35 years in public service experience. Hmmmm, you would think that somewhere during her time in public service she  would have perfected her communications such that we would GET HER MESSAGE!

Apparently, while she stated she "found her voice" in New Hampshire, we later observe many simply did not hear her voice, and following Tuesday's results, more increasingly are not hearing it! Perhaps her inability to communicate effectively and connect with the voting public is an indicator of her "inexperience" and negative potential to communicate, connect and lead from the Whitehouse.

As a last note, Hillary Clinton may continue to tout her great "experience on day one." I opine if no one is listening or if she remains unheard, then her net leadership effectiveness is the negative equivalent of having no message or experience at all!

Yes, it has been 35 years, and now it's time to get real!
It never fails to amaze me when people like hillary start losing, and they can't imagine that someone would dare not vote for them...so yea it's time to get real...whatever political capital you had because of your husband, you squander everytime you open your mouth...uninspiring, terrible speaker, and honestly, her record isnt that much longer or more impressive in the least than obama's considering how much more experience she says she has.  Furthermore, she says she understands about working class americans, working the nightshift...thats just ludicrous. stop relying on dirty politics...she's a bush in democrat's clothing.
Hillary has clearly lost her momentum in this race. She needs to step back and let the democratic party focus on promoting one candidate before it's too late. Although she might have more experience, but she has failed to inspire new voters and convince them of the kind of change she is bringing to the White House.

Hillary has a long track record, she has created more enemies than supporters over the years. However, Obama is a fresh new candidate with many new ideas. I truely believe that any independent undecided voter will VOTE MCCAIN if she wins the democratic nomination. BEWARE the DEMOCRATIC HILLARY HATERS they will vote republicani if she wins.
Geez - the backs of most folks are up.  As long as we don't do the republicans the favor of picking apart Hillary and Obama to the point we throw off any undecided voters, debating their virtues and their weaknesses are valuable.  But once we start to really get the claws out, we may be in danger of forgetting that ANY democrat would be preferable to any of the republicans that showed up to play...
Either way - why on earth do we not use the popular vote and risk ticking primary voters off by having superdelegates negate everyone else's opinion?  Daft...
She is so arrogant!  What makes her think we, the voters, are not "real" certain in our choice of a presidential nominee because that it's not her!  This is absolutely insane.  This is not only blind ambition it's deaf, too!  The people are speaking and we don't want what she is selling.  We don't want to hire her for the "most difficult job in the US".  We have the right to choose someone else.  Obama 08.
I am fascinated by the discussion of "experience"..Isn't Politics as usual, insider, over-stayed, self-centered, self absorbed "experience" what has gotten us here? Bush, Clinton, Clinton, Bush, Bush...what a cat -asstrophy (spelling intentional) of career "experienced politicians... The fact that Obama is a short term politician, and Hillary is A life-long politician should be MOST telling... Give me character, hope and good advisors and an every 4 year election over corruption every time !!!!!  Please Clintons...Exit !!!
I love it! When democrates beat each other up it makes my day. McCain is going to wipe the floor with either of these two candidates. Mark my words all you guys are going to be scratching your head next January asking yourselves "what happend, I thought we had this in the bag" Sorry to burst your guys bubble early but get real Republicans aren't going down easy. Real Americans aren't going to just sit around and let Obama or Clinton turn our American into a Welfare socialist state FYI...
Hillary Clinton needs to get out of the race before she does anymore damage to the Democratic party's chances in November.  Every negative remark she makes about Obama is then repeated the next day by John McCain.  I'm starting to wonder what side she is on.  Is she so stuborn and selfish that she will take this all the way to the Convention even if it hurts Democratic chances to defeat the Republicans?  Oh wait that sounds like a Clinton thing to do - so I guess I just answered my own question.  The voters in the last 10 contests have spoken - Hillary you lose.  Do the right thing, get out of the race and campaign for Obama so that Democrats can regain the White House.
Obama..all sound bites, no substance. What has he actually accomplished???...answer..nothing! It amazes me that so many people are fooled by his "CHANGE" line. Hillary would be bad...Obama would be terrible!
I guess you know, that there could never be a Clinton/Obama ticket! She wouldn't have the brass to ask a person who got more votes and delegates to be her VP. There could be an Obama/Clinton ticket, which would unite the whole deal and she could still bring her experience for the good of the people, and make history again by holding the highest office for a woman.
How about this voting record:

Authorization for war in IRAQ:

OBAMA voted NO and CLINTON voted YES!!!!

Please stop it Hillary with your so called experience edge because experience obviously didn't help you in making the right decision on IRAQ or NAFTA!!

RIP Clintons (Sent Wednesday, February 20, 2008 4:15 PM)
are you people really this ignorant?

Please show me where Obama voted no.

Obama voted NO to the War in Iraq???

From where?? His IL townhouse??

HE WASN"T EVEN IN THE US SENATE UNTIL 2004 -

The Iraq Resolution was in October 2002!!!!

NO THEY DON'T

Obama,12
Just a couple of things no one is talking about, but everyone's thinking about.

1.  Obama is not white, and does not have a Christian name.
2.  Hillary and first wife Bill?  Will Bill really support the "first wife" position, or will he be co_president?
3.  A woman as leader will cause issues with foreign policy in the mid-east.
4.  Can a Christian vote for a woman president?
Do you read your own blogs?  You people are unbelievable.  Although I believe Hillary would be a better candidate I respect my colleagues position to support Obama.  Could you be any nastier? Fellow women support whoever you want but show some class when you see a woman try and defy popular media opinion (and believe me they are so pro-Obama) to win the nomination.  Also, I am tired of hearing about politics of the past.  Campaigns will always be tough and Obama is not prepared for what is coming his way with republicans. Do you remeber the last president who ran on change and bringing people together...just words...that's right Bush..and did he deliver on his rhetoric?
Obama said "Right from day one..." then he said "We will make mistakes...". A true flip flopper.
Who said there is no justice in the world?  This is what I call justice.  Bill Clinton aided and abetted by his wife trashed this country. They both lied and stole through 8 years of lurching from one disaster to another. Bill promised to support a Presidenttial run for Hillary in return for her deflecting the rape and groping attacks.Only thing she couldn't deflect was that dammed blue dress and DNA sample and of course the infamouse cigar. Bill broke his promise to her (surprise, surprise) and used his oratory skills to sanitize his own term and in effect was worse than useles for Hillary. This I call poetic justice. Each one is mired so deep in the muck and slime of their pathetic lives they are unrecognizable. Now they bring Chelsea into the mix and what does "the smartest woman in the world" do?  She bashes Chelsea's employer.  Talk about eating your own I thought only animals did that.
Hillary states:  "It is time to get real, to get real about how we actually win this election and get real about the challenges facing America."

Hillary,"WE THE PEOPLE" ARE REAL!  "WE THE PEOPLE" ARE REAL ABOUT HOW WE ACTUALLY WIN THIS ELECTION.  "WE THE PEOPLE"  CHOOSE WHO WE WANT FOR PRESIDENT--THIS IS "REAL".  "WE THE PEOPLE" ARE REAL AND ARE VERY AWARE OF THE CHALLENGES FACING OUR NATION.  "WE THE PEOPLE" HAVE SPOKEN.  WE ARE REAL AND WE CHOOSE TO NOT HAVE YOU AS OUR LEADER.  HILLARY, IT'S TIME FOR YOU TO GET REAL AND ACCEPT THAT "WE THE PEOPLE" REALLY ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR INCOMPETACE AND INABILITY TO LEAD.  YOU HAVE GIVEN US THE UNDISPUTED PROOF.  YOU CANNOT HANDLE YOUR CAMPAIGN AND THAT'S A MINI TASK IN COMPARISON TO LEADING OUR COUNTRY.  YOU ARE A "REAL FAILURE", TIME FOR FOR YOU TO STEP ASIDE AND LET OUR COUNTRY MOVE FORWARD!

"WE THE PEOPLE" ARE REAL AND "WE THE PEOPLE" DECIDE WHO WE WANT FOR OUR "REAL" PRESIDENT.
Voters in 25 states how gotten real. We've voted to make Senator Obama the Democratic nominee. Give it up Hillary. Preserve your legacy as a respectable First Lady and US Senator.
Well, apparently when no good argument for Hillary can be made, USE CAPITAL LETTERS.  Oh, and of course bring out all of the negative attack material.

It strikes me as naive to complain about negative media coverage, when all the Clinton camp has done for the last week is go negative.  In fact, the last two days have been nothing but process stories about Obama on every news station.  The "plagiarism" accusation, and Michelle Obama's pride in America (A truncated quote, I watched the whole speech).

How can you not see that if Obama weren't so intent on a positive campaign that he could have unleashed a tidal wave of negative attacks, on political mistakes and personal miscues compiled over Senator Clintons touted thirty-five years in public service.

I'm tired of hearing about how the media has given Senator Obama a pass, and focused too much on Senator Clinton.  I don't remember hearing such complaints when Sen. Clinton was being designated as the inevitable Democratic candidate.  At some point it would be nice if she could take credit for a mistake or failure.

She voted for the Iraq War: She was misled, and given false information.  Although many others voted against the authorization. Those that did vote for it, such as former Sen. John Edwards, have since admitted the mistake, but not Sen. Clinton.  President Bush's fault.

She was a proponent of NAFTA during President Clinton's administration, but now wavers on that support.  When insinuations arise about this, a story is released that she "didn't really support it" she was being a good wife.  Bill Clinton's fault.

As First Lady, when pushing for her first health care plan, she was abrasive and calculating in tearing down any and all detractors, or even those who could have supported it with slight changes or at least a seat at the table.  The initiative failed, and many possible allies were alienated. Congress' fault.

And now, as a failing candidate, whom up until three months ago was the prohibitive favorite, with a failing campaign that frittered away it's lead because they didn't take the time to actually plan for any challenges, or place qualified people in necessary positions, or manage funds correctly, or act in a way that treats the American people as a respected constituency, and took every opportunity to engage in the degrading, dishonest, win at all costs, negative political attack strategies that have done nothing but divide our party; you claim she is being mistreated, and not given a chance.  No, it's not her fault, it's the media's fault.

Maybe the negative attention is due to the fact that she is losing, and there's no positive way to spin that.

We've spent the last seven years with a President who has done nothing but deflect blame and point out others flaws, a President who has yet to acknowledge any wrongdoing or mistake, a President who routinely treats the American public as a tool with which to win elections instead of a constituency to which he should be responsible, and you are promoting a choice for the next President is giving us nothing but the same.

Let's get Real:

government transparency... by Obama? ...

... reminds me of the "Emperors New Clothes", (portrait of  Barack Obama as his minions continue to praise his beautiful new clothes)... remember the story?

NO THEY WON'T

Obama,12

Positive words causing positive action.  It reminds me of JFK and his space program goals.  Leaders express positive ideas and positive people make them happen.  Every time i see the space shuttle i am reminded of JFK's words.  I am so thankful for positive words expressed by Leaders followed up with positive action.
Regarding work:  Harvard Law School Graduate; Constitutional Law Professor; Illinois State Senate for 7 years; First Term Senator.  Sounds to me like Senator Obama has been working.
Obama's a nutty preacher, and it's scary how people have swooned over him.  They're voting approval of his speeches, when they should be voting for sound policies.  His are not.
Hillary still does not get it! Getting real is not playing the same political games year after year in Washington. Getting real is getting people to believe they can be equal participants in their government. No Lobbyist, No 527s and YES to honest brokers in the government once again. Get real soon Hillary you are losing the respect of many who have respected the CLINTONs
I am sorry to question your wonderful strategy Hillary, but we have already covered half the states in the nation, and you didn't "get real" until now? Hrm.
Laura-San Diego, I agree with Lewis-Cincinati.  On a purely business level, Obama has done better managing his campaign budget.  He hasn't had to LOAN hisself any money and was not fool-hardy in thinking the nomination would be wrapped up by Feb. 5th.

As many posters have asked...can somebody ANYBODY detail this ALLEGED 35 years of experience?  She worked for the Rose Law Firm from about 1977 to 1993 representing corporate interests.  8 years as First Lady in the white house and approximately another 12 as First Lady in Arkansas doesn't count. So what exactly is she talking about in terms of experience.

So, let's get real...many of us would like to know.  It MAY actually help her but she's too prone to being secretive! She's opaque instead of transparent.  We've had enough of that.

Also, not everyone in Ohio is 'down-scale'.  Some of us actually read and can move beyond Clinton's EMPTY rhetoric about words v. actions.
GO HILLARY!  I am amazed to see how desperate the American people are to be inspired!  And the role the media has played in this fiasco is a shame -- playing a role in the recent tidal shift to Obama by inundating people with media commentary about how he's got "momentum," commenting that Hillary really needs a win to get the momentum, etc.  Fence sitters have bought this!  The media should report facts, not comment on them, particularly here, where voters are apparently so desperate for another Bobby Kennedy.  Guess what, there was one, only one and there will never be another.  Obama is no Kennedy.  (I also like the way the media has gone so race card and gender card lately: how women are supposed to vote Hillary, blacks vote Obama.  Boy, how sad, how sad a reminder of how far we have to go.)  Voting for Obama is voting for McCain.  Obama has no connections, an unremarkable to bad record as a public servant, wishy washy when pushed, and easily bought.  He will be able to get done as much as your grandmother's dog -- which I find equally charismatic, but I'm not voting for your grandmother's dog, either.  Obama's record shows he is unable to make decisions when called on to do so.  And when Obama was a lawyer, he advocated for who paid the bill (Rezko), and did a somewhat mediocre job at it.  In law, lawyers like Obama are like pennies -- real common and not worth a lot.  Has anyone realized McCain is smart enough to figure all this out if Obama wins?  Here's what Obama says: "Change! [Blah blah blah]  Hope! [Blah blah blah]"  Yes, he's charismatic, but so are lots of people you slept with!  Hillary is right, and if you lose your lame prejudices and childish name-calling, you can see she is the best choice.  Good for her for calling it like she sees it.  We all know, however, that in the end, for party's sake, she'll help Obama if he wins.  So: here's what I'll do if Hillary doesn't win and Obama is the Democratic choice -- I'll vote McCain.  Looking over the comments of Obama supporters here, McCain is my only choice.  I predict McCain over Obama.  Nice work, Obama supporters.
Lets get the facts straight Obama (Hussain) was not in office when they voted on the war if Obama koolaid drinkers who do the fact check only two senator's voted against the war America wanted to go to war remember 911!  Also Obama is biracail he is not the first black presdential canadiate he is the first biracail president he is half white,@half black.  He is not winning big the reps are voting to shut Hillary out because McCain will eat Obama for lunch. Doesn't anyone do there research?  Will be under bush for the next 4yrs because Obama the Senator that has such impressive resume that he will be voted out on the same float he came in on. Wake up people. Heck his owen wife has never been proud of our great nation.
Is there any real discernable difference between Barack and Hillary? They both are opposed to the war.  Barack just had the good fortune of not being a member of the Senate when it was voted on.  It was very politically popular at the time.  Remember when John Edwards and John Kerry chastised Howard Dean during the 04 election for opposing it?  It's a bad war.  Not because it's the wrong war, but because it has been pathetically executed.  They both want to roll back the Bush tax cuts.  They both want universal health care. It's hard for me to identify any real policies differences.  In which case, it boils down to personality and likability.  Obama wins this contest hands down.  So if they're pretty much identical from a policy perspective, why would you vote for Obama?
Mary, get your facts straight.

Bush was AWOL from the National Guard
for long periods of time(after he had used
his father's political connections to move
down on the draft list and let his neighbors in
Texas fight and die for him in Vietnam).

Researchers and Reporters have interviewed
Servicemen who served in the same units and
at the same time Bush Jr. was supposed to
have been in the Texas National Guard.

It is curious that no military veterans from
his unit could ever verify acutally seeing
Bush show up for duty or do his National
Guard assigned job?  He was out fighting
the "battle of the barstool".

If his last name was not Bush, he would have
been courts martialed, convicted and sentenced
to Federal Prison.

Cheney told interviewers that he thought he thought he was "too important" to serve his country in the military so he used "every deferment trick in the book" to stay in school and out of American military service.

These are the "Chicken Hawks" with no real military
service experience and LACKING IN BASIC JUDGMENT
SKILLS in most of the Federal Goverment cabinet positions who make the decisions to send our men and women to war?

Green Berets and US Special Forces operatives
have stated on the record that President Clinton
approved every initiative and plan to get Bin Ladin,
however, it was the Pentagon bureaucracy that kept
telling the Joint Chiefs and President Clinton that
they "did not have the capacity to find and get
Bin Ladin". (When the Green Berets have stated
that that was a lie---they should have tried
to get Bin Ladin)---the Pentagon did not want to
take the chance that a mission would be a failure
(see helicopter rescue fiasco in Iranian desert)
and that they would be blame if it failed.

With the kind of "experience" that Cheney,
Rumsfeld Rice, Wolfowitz(sp?)provided our
country as "Washington Insiders" I will
gladly take my chances with Obama.

It is just a pity that we cannot give
the  all of the "K Street Lobbyists" a
new assignment in Baghdad or Fallujah for
the next four years to give Obama and Congress
time to clean up the collossal mess in Washington.
