Obama's rebuttal to Clinton

From NBC's Mark Murray
AUSTIN, TX -- After Clinton's "change you and Xerox" comment, Obama mostly stayed about the fray -- and spent several minutes talking about health care. (Perhaps a chance to display more policy?)

But as my colleague Domenico Montanaro pointed out, Obama finally pulled out the Jim Cooper card -- the Tennessee Democratic congressman whom the Clinton Administration isolated during the health-care debate of the 1990s. It was a big chance from the November Nevada debate, when Clinton went after Obama on health-care. And he responded by talking about mandates.

This time, he talked about mandates -- but also brought up the Clinton health-care failures of the '90s.

Can someoen please tell Hillary to stop babbling
I noticed you guys didn't mention the xerox comment got booooo's
Is it the silly season? No, but Hillary looks petty and silly. LOL
I think she played a card that will have some effect either positive or negative. If it is negative then that does not matter anyway as she is already on downward trajectory. I think it was good political move on her side.
This is key difference.  Hillary is great at alienating people with her superior attitude.  Obama is a leader who looks to build a team.  Hillary can't even get along with someone close to her in opinion because for her its all about Hillary.  How could she possibly get anything done in a divided Washington?  Obama is more likely to from a true working coalition.
ok for those of us who dont know the first and last name of all the players in the 90's debates.. want to give more of a clue to what you're referencing then ..the 'senator they isolated'? What the heck does that mean?

Isolated in an insane asylum? .. took backstage and beat with a stick? what?

Did anyone else just see Hillary's blunder?  She said McCain could not win the argument on wasteful spending because he voted for Bush's tax cuts and voted for this war.  HELLO...she voted for this war too.  Wouldn't that by default make her just as guilty for that wasteful spending?  She can't win that argument against him because she voted the same way he did.  I hope people picked up on that.
I love chuck todd as an impartial reporter, although I think MSNBC has been going a little pro-hillary to respond to all the stupid criticism against them...

But I am wondering what your point is on this one?
I respect Obama, but all i hear out of his mouth is words.  He never really states how he is going to accomplish solving America's problems...it's always, "we are going to do this" or "together we are going to make a change", this all sounds good, but he never really tells us what the plans are, instead it's just words.  I hope you can change my mind, because Hillary's statements are more detailed and she seem to know what she's talking about...also, I have always been proud of my country through good and bad, because I am an American.
Hillary has the experience of getting republicans elected in 1994. People still say how they want anyone but her. Obama has the experience of uniting people behind real positive change in the Illinois Legislature and even now in his campaign.  His ability to awaken the youth vote is awesome.  While I like both candidates ideas, Obama has a better progressive record and will elect more Democrats this November.  We cant have much change if we dont have a sea change in congress towards a New Democratic Majority with a Democrat President.
Did Mark Murray mean to say: "stayed above the fray"? A little editing of quick blogs seems to be in order.
The plagiarism red herring is a bore.  We can all quote old -isms.  Hillary is a superior intellect, capable of original thinking; therefore, a better Senator.  O'Bama is entirely derivative; therefore an okay Chief Administrator.
Why is it hard to vote for Obama for some pople? Well, many of us have been indoctrinated to stay the same and believe in the old ways while the whole world is moving away from us. This is the reason our young people have not been that involved in the past because of the same old things- with empty promises! To me, it is very simple. Oabma challenges us to move forward... He is self-made man from his upbringing serving as the strong foundation as opposed to having been protected with easy  handouts like all other politicians. Plus, Hillary is no different from other old school having no new ideas, having no chrisma or inspiration. We need to move away from our comfort zone- the business as usual and negativity. Hope and dream belongs to all of us; Obama speaks on our behalf as citizens for better economy, health care, and world peace. Obama can't do this alone. We have to help and hold him and ourselves accountable.
Come on Phil, we all love our Country. Being from Alabama, where's your OUTRAGE of Bill O'Reilly & his Lynching comment?Waiting.
Sen. Obama missed a good opportunity to drive home an important point regarding Sen. Clinton's management style.  In the health care portion of tonight's debate, he correctly pointed out that one of the main reasons the 1990s universal health care proposal that she developed failed was the way in which she went about developing that proposal.  Instead of being open and inclusive, she went behind closed doors with a small group of like-minded people and tried to spring a massive change in our national health care system without involving people in the development of that plan.  Of course it failed.
The more important point, however, which Sen. Obama failed to develop in tonight's debate, was what this episode reveals about her management style.  Do we really want a president who assume she knows better than everyone else, and develops major policies and programs in secret?  In my opinion, the way in which she went about developing the universal health care proposal during her husband's first term is the reason for her high negative ratings, as much if not more so than the details of the plan itself.
Obama had a successful debate tonight, he once more showed that he is a leader and ready to be commander in chief.  Hillary on the other hand, tried to gain ground with petty cracks such as the "xerox" one.  She need to tone down that air of superiority and get down to earth with the rest of us like Obama does and looks like he will continue to do so even if elected into the White House.
Re: the phony plagarism story, when is someone going to point out Hillary Clinton's hypocrisy in claiming credit for "It Takes a Village," when it fact the book was mostly written by Barbara Fein without giving her any credit?
When are the attacks and criticisms on Hillary from the media cease?  For two hours the two candidates spoke their minds on the pressing issues the face our nation today.  A great debate, and clear victory for Senator Clinton.  As we have come to expect, Hillary has expressed her views, stated her goals, and given us here specific detailed plans on how she will achieve those goals once in office.  She demonstrated her knowledge and experience that will prove so beneficial in the oval office.  But yet, seconds after the debate, we run to our computer and visit the websites and the blogs, and we invariably see the same thing.  "Hillary accuses opponent of political plagarism," "Clinton throws plagiarism punch," and "Clinton jabs Obama over plagiarism."  Folks, let's open our eyes, and ears.  Let's, for once, headline the great points Senator Clinton made throughout the evening.  Let's report the goals, the plans, the achievements.  Let's regale her wonderful closing statement which unified the audience, and brought them to their feet in a resounding applause.  For once, I would like to look online, and see a positive remark about Senator Clinton and her mission to save this nation.
Would Obama have called the issue "silly" if Hillary was a man?

As a woman, I am offended.
Phil Hall,

Barack Obama said, among other things, that he intends to establish a catastrophic reinsurance fund to reduce all family health premiums by 2500 dollars.  He proposed raising the cap on income taxed by social security and eliminating taxes on social security benefits for seniors earning less than $50,000 per year.  He proposed a cap on greenhouse gases and a reinvestment of money earned from cap fees into renewable energy resources.  He proposed rescinding tax breaks for corporations who move jobs overseas and called for a new philosophy on trade pacts that would emphasize fair labor and environmental standards in our trading partners' countries.  He was also fairly specific about a new direction in foreign policy that would involve a more energetic and direct role for the president in negotiating with countries we now consider enemies.

Maybe the reason you didn't hear any specifics from Senator Obama is because you don't want to.  It seems like far too many people are eager to accept the current narrative that he's all fluff and language with no plans or proposals.  It's baloney.
Mr. Hall of Birmingham:

To you and any others who are still debating which candidate to support, I hope you realize that the fundamental difference between the two candidates is that Senator Obama wants to include the American people on making the changes that will work best for Americans. Senator Clinton seems to think she alone has all of the answers.  I can't wait to finally live in a country where the federal government is actually working for the people!  I believe that there are a lot of people out there with great ideas that Obama would listen to and Clinton would dismiss.  This country needs an American Spirit Revival!
Phil, check this out.

He clearly states over and over again how he intends to solve problems.  In case you missed it, he is doing it now.  Get citizens excited and involved in governance, the result is more voters turnout and Democrats win a true majority in November and then pass - you guessed it - the stuff in the issues link.

And he's patriotic too... got up on the floor of the Senate and spoke out when Habeus Corpus was revoked.
I think it was Obama's best debate performance.  Did a much better job of explaining his approach to unversal health care, looked and sounded Presidential, and allowed Hillary to look petty around her plagiarism attack.   BTW, did Hillary write her xerox line or did she 'lift' it from someone else.  Certainly lifted the ending from both John Edwards and Bill Clinton.   And by the end she was conceding -- thank God for that!
Background on Hillary-Care Version 0.1 and Jim Cooper:  "Cooper is one of the most thoughtful, cordial and well-prepared members of the House. In 1992, he came up with a health care reform plan that would go on to attract wide, bipartisan support. A later version had 58 co-sponsors in the House — 26 Republicans and 32 Democrats. It was sponsored in the Senate by Democrat John Breaux and embraced by Daniel Patrick Moynihan, among others.

But unlike the plan Hillary Clinton came up with then, the Cooper plan did not include employer mandates to force universal coverage.

On June 15, 1993, Cooper met with Clinton to discuss their differences. Clinton was “ice cold” at the meeting, Cooper recalls. “It was the coldest reception of my life. I was excoriated.” "

Many important things to discuss. Why bother with "change you and Xerox" comment.
Obama explanation is satisfactory.
I noticed it, Andrew!  And Phil, Hilary spouts out empty phrases too! "35 years of service" I will give her the six in the Senate and it's a stretch to even count the ones as first lady.  Hilary just dresses her rhetoric up to make it sound fancy.
you could see a couple of times tonight that Hillary knows she has lost. It was in here eyes. You could also see that Obama knew he would be the next nominee and so did much of the audience.
Phil, what you want can't be said in 5 min bites..what you want is "i will call these Senators, this general, have this meeting..the specifics would take a book..First you confer with the best minds..determine a plan based on all points of view and then follow through..Now,Obama can only show direction...what you ask isn't possible.
I'm SICK & TIRED listening to Senator Clinton saying that she has this 35 years of experience and READY ON DAY ONE.

Well SHE CAN'T EVEN TAKE CHARGE OF HER OWN CAMPAIGN NOW WITH all that experience, plus having been thru 2 presidential elections of former president Clinton, and this is all she got? If you can't even get your primary (no less) presidential campaign together how do you expect to run a country? Talking about how Senator Obama is not ready, Obviously so far he's ready enough to go against the CLINTON MACHINE….

With all the good that comes from Senator Clinton experience also come a lot of bad ones. That 35 years of experience also give us the war in Iraq, No Child Left Behind, Bankcruptcy Law, NAFTA, not to mention secrecy conduct that would rival President Bush. You would've known what you know now Senator Clinton if you bothered to read the NIE report, obviously those 35 years experience didn't lead you to that judgment. I don't know what kind of your own research that you did, what kind of advice that you got, those 35 years of experiences still DIDN'T LEAD YOU TO THE CORRECT ANSWER.

AND LET'S TALK ABOUT THIS HEALTHCARE STUFF, with all HER EXPERIENCES, I watched when she came out with her healthcare plans after John Edwards & Barack Obama came out with theirs almost a year ago, HER PLANS were basically IDENTICAL WITH JOHN EDWARDS'. So, now she has the nerve to say Barack Obama plagiarized Patrick Devall, WELL SENATOR CLINTON PLAGIARIZED JOHN EDWARDS' HEALTHCARE PLAN. She just copied his plan and change his name to hers.

I mean is this the person who supposed to be the inevitable candidate? The person who has been collecting money from donors for more than 2 decades now, and THIS IS THE BEST CAMPAIGN & MESSAGE she can deliver FROM THOSE 35 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE?

I'M INEVITABLE, I'M EXPERIENCE, I'M READY ON DAY ONE,I'M SO READY I HAD TO COPY MY HEALTHCARE PLAN FROM JOHN EDWARDS, I'M SO READY I HAVE TO MAKE SURE QUESTIONS GIVEN TO ME BY THE PEOLE ARE PLANTED AND THOSE THAT AREN'T HAVE TO BE PRE SCREENED, I'M SO READY I HAVE TO KILL ANY ARTICLE FROM BEING PUBLISHED IN CASE IT SAYS SOMETHING BAD ABOUT ME, I'M SO READY THAT I DIDN'T THINK I NEED TO MAKE MY CASE TO PEOPLE IN SMALL STATES LIKE WASHINGTON, NEBRASKA, DELAWARE OR VIRGINIA, I'M SO READY THAT CAUCUSES AREN'T IMPORTANT SO I DON'T HAVE TO TAKE THEM SERIOUSLY, I'M SO READY THAT EVEN IF I LOOSE 11 ELECTIONS IN A ROW IT'S STILL VIABLE TO SAY THAT I'M THE MOST EXPERIENCED AND READY ON DAY ONE AS COMMANDER IN CHIEF.

GIVE ME A BREAK!!!

And this is coming from somebody who's NOT even voting for her opponent.
Hillary Clinton has seen her ups in this campaign and its its all downfill from hereon and on.  To all of you who say Barack is all words.  I laugh at all of you after tonight's debate has clearly DEFINED Clinton as all mouth highlighted by that "XEROX" remark that was boooooeed and she just officially lost 2 million voters in Texas tonight and YUP I am one of them.  Barack Obama, you did not just win my mind tonight, YOU won my heart.  You get 7 other members of my family voting for you by March 4. Hillary Clinton not only was exposed tonight, SHE WAS SHUT OUT by my man Barack Obama.  HAHAHAHAHAH!!!  Good for you Hillary.  Now how else can you convince America you can lead us when you can not even manage your own campaign staffs from squabbling and disintegrating behind closed doors.  BRAVO!!!
Hill plagiarises Bill AFTER accusing Obama

http://www.youtube.com/watch...

She set the standard (foolishly), now she is a hypocrite.
Check out the  .. You  Tube ,  Hillary  Channels   Bill..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJ7Cs3QvT3U

and  listen to the  comparisons  of  his  speech and her   ending this  evening  in the  debate ,  too   funny ,  Who  is  xeroxing   who , lmao
Having watched a recording of the debate I'd say Hillary won on points but did not score a knock-out blow.

It was interesting to note that she did not go for the cheap, easy shot that the debate's moderators were giving her.  Perhaps she is learning that in some campaigns being negative does not always work.  The Republicans can get away with it while she cannot - it's a sad fact of life for her - that combined with the media's pathetic analysis of Obama has meant that he has not really been challenged on either his character or his policies.

Unless there is a major scandal affecting Obama, I can't see Clinton winning the nomination.  Even if she takes Texas, Ohio and Pennsylvania by 10%+ margins she would, because of the skewed demographics, not gain much on Obama.

Obama looks strong now but that I believe is an illusion.  His support base is built on quicksand - young voters are notoriously fickle; the black vote can only help him in certain states (and in fact be a vote loser in others - that's not being racist - it's just stating the reality of US politics); and he can't use the rich trendy white politically correct middle-class liberals to bully and intimidate in caucuses because there are not any in the Presidential election.

I honestly believe that when Obama feels the full force of the GOP attack his support will melt away.  It won't just be about issues such as Rezko and his previously admitted cocaine habit.  They will attack him for not being a patriot regards Iraq.  They will attack him regards his stance on Cuba (bye, bye Florida then).  They will attack his economic policy and say that he will hike taxes.  Above all they will portray him as a socialist (ironically he isn't), as far left, raising the McCarthyist spectre of communism is the minds of voters.

And that's just the negatives he will have to deal with!!

He will also have to deal with many of the positives that McCain has.  McCain the war hero.  McCain's years of experience.  McCain's ability to cross boundaries and work with Democrat and Republicans alike.  That is not an easy target to topple.

I know some have said that McCain has two weaknesses - Iraq and his age.  As I have already pointed out Iraq could be a double-edged sword for Obama - he can portray McCain as a warmonger but equally McCain can portray him as being unpatriotic.  Moreover, Obama's stance on Iraq is weakened by his views on Pakistan - where he says he would consider US action there without the support of the Pakistan government.  As for McCain's age - that too is double-edged sword - Obama may gain the votes of the youth but the reality is that it is older voters who decide elections because they vote in greater numbers than the under-30s.  I am sure many would not appreciate an attack on the age of a candidate.

The only way Obama can win in November is to strengthen his support base.  He needs to very quickly get the Latino voters and the Centrist democrats - the so-called Reagan Democrats behind him.  That's why he needs to include not only the likes of Bill Richardson and John Edwards in his team but also Hillary Clinton herself.  I know for some she may be a hate figure - I've never quite understood why some people have fallen hook, line and sinker for the GOP line regards her.  Clinton (and Bill) would not only bring detail to Obama's policies - which really do need more meat put on them - she would also bring her (and Bill's) experience of dealing with the Republican attack machine.
Hey Phil, I'm glad you have always been proud of America - proud of slavery, proud of discrimination, proud of how we allow our children to live in poverty without health insurance.
I have always been proud of my fellow citizens who have striven to address such inequities.  For the first time in my life, I am REALLY proud that my country is about to live up to its promise!
Hillary's "xerox" could prove to be devastating to her campaign if people become aware of the extent to which she "xeroxed" a portion of a John Edward's speech and a Bill Clinton campaign speech of years ago that is posted on YouTube.  Her comments that were so moving at the conclusion of the debate were so obviously lifted word-for-word could garner her the title Hypocritical Hillary the "Xeroxer".  If someone with good computer skills combines those speeches, it could be devastating to her.
Hey Hillary why don't you tell us why YOU should be president instead of telling us why Obama shouldn't. You sound like a whining child and have lost all my confidence in you of ever being president.
Democratic Debate:

Barack Obama = Genuine Class Act.

Hillary Clinton = Desperately trying end on a classy note.

Effect?  Same as before.  Obama hits a home run.  Hillary, as always, a total sham.  A MASTER MANIPULATOR whose time has past!

Unlike some very naive and foolish "political analysts" on TV, who seemed to think Clinton's last few moments were either "almost like resignation or accepting defeat graciously" or maybe even a "genuine moment, we saw the real Hillary"... Anyone with half a brain knew better.  This woman is nothing but FAKE, OPPORTUNISTIC, AND CORRUPT!

Hillarybot to herself: "Let's see. My numbers are way down; I'm about to lose; What worked last time?  Oh, yeah, try to appear to be human." Pathetic!

And then the best part!!!  Right after the debate, learning from Politico.com that Hillarybot's last few "heartfelt moments" were actually PLAGIARIZED from John Edward's December 13, 2007 speech!
