Obama woos young Latinos

Posted: Friday, February 22, 2008 2:26 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan
Edinburg, TX -- In a move to woo Latino voters, especially under 30, Obama held a roundtable on college affordability and a rally at the University of Texas Pan American here in South Texas today.

Sitting on a high stool surrounded by about 25 students and about a dozen cameras, Obama went through the broad parts of his education plan, which includes a $4,000 tuition tax credit for students per year of college in exchange for 100 hours of community service per year.

It's the campaign's hope that by stressing issues of concern to young people that they can appeal to younger Latinos. An Obama aide told reporters that Latinos in Texas are younger than those in other parts of the country and -- potentially -- more open to Obama's candidacy.

Referencing his days of being a college professor, Obama warned the students that he would start calling people if they didn't volunteer to speak up. He also, as he does often in these situations, invoked his own personal story and that of his wife's saying that they were paying off their student loans until recently.

"Michelle and I are very sensitive to the fact that the only reason we are where we are today is because we got an education. There were kids who were smarter than us more talented than us but they didn't have the choice that we did."

The discussion was livelier than most town halls, and students veered the discussion away from Obama's plans to a sticking point among many college students: loans are often determined by the federal government and higher education organizations based on parental income without proper consideration given to a family's situation or if students are living on their own.

Obama confessed ignorance on the issue of how loans are determined, saying that it would depend on if parents were claiming educating their children as a tax deduction.

But throwing a populist pitch into the fray he said, "The [current] model is built around a bunch of co-eds on Ivy League campuses." He refrained from mentioning that at one point he was one, too.

But while much of the criticism focused on obtaining loans, interest rates, and the need for more government aid, Obama made only a mention of how tuition and fee increases by universities have helped to ramp up student debt.

"I taught law at the University of Chicago for ten years and law profs write their own texts and assign it to their students and they make a big mint.  It's a huge racket.  We have to keep costs down, fees down, and students should lower their expectations," he said.

He also warned students that they didn't need to stay in school forever. "I don't want you staying in there for 20 years," he joked about the possibility of government funding.

And emphasizing skilled trades, he added that he didn't think "everyone needs a PhD."

"Be careful about those credit cards. Don't eat out as much, eat in," he said.

He ended the event with the plea, "Remember early voting. But I won't tell you who to vote for."

isn't he the one that said latinos are taking African-American jobs?
jerry/corpus christi and others in Texas: Things seem to be happening there. It all sounds pretty exciting from here.

Forget the polls for a moment - How is it looking for Senator Obama from what people are saying to you?
Those of you who are sincerely worried by allegations that Barack is all talk or an empty suit might want to check out this post from Grassroots Mom titled  “I Refuse to Buy into the Obama Hype.”  She skipped all the spin and went straight to the Library of Congress to compare in depth the legislative records of our two candidates.  Her discoveries are revealing.
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/2/20/201332/807/36/458633
I'm SICK & TIRED listening to Senator Clinton saying that she has this 35 years of experience and READY ON DAY ONE.

Well SHE CAN'T EVEN TAKE CHARGE OF HER OWN CAMPAIGN NOW WITH all that experience, plus having been thru 2 presidential elections of former president Clinton, and this is all she got? If you can't even get your primary (no less) presidential campaign together how do you expect to run a country? Talking about how Senator Obama is not ready, Obviously so far he's ready enough to go against the CLINTON MACHINE….

With all the good that comes from Senator Clinton experience also come a lot of bad ones. That 35 years of experience also give us the war in Iraq, No Child Left Behind, Bankruptcy Law, NAFTA, not to mention secrecy conduct that would rival President Bush. You would've known what you know now Senator Clinton if you bothered to read the NIE report, obviously those 35 years experience didn't lead you to that judgment. I don't know what kind of your own research that you did, what kind of advice that you got, those 35 years of experiences still DIDN'T LEAD YOU TO THE CORRECT ANSWER.

AND LET'S TALK ABOUT THIS HEALTHCARE STUFF, with all HER EXPERIENCES, I watched when she came out with her healthcare plans after John Edwards & Barack Obama came out with theirs almost a year ago, HER PLANS were basically IDENTICAL WITH JOHN EDWARDS'. So, now she has the nerve to say Barack Obama plagiarized Deval Patrick, WELL SENATOR CLINTON PLAGIARIZED JOHN EDWARDS' HEALTHCARE PLAN. This is from somebody who says she’s in the solution business? She just copied his plan and changed his name to hers.  WTG Clinton, no wonder you’re the loudest crying plagiarism, YOU KNOW IT SO WELL.

I mean is this the person who supposed to be the inevitable candidate? The person who has been collecting money from donors for more than 2 decades now, and THIS IS THE BEST CAMPAIGN & MESSAGE she can deliver FROM THOSE 35 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE?

I'M INEVITABLE, I'M EXPERIENCE, I'M READY ON DAY ONE,I'M SO READY I HAD TO COPY MY HEALTHCARE PLAN FROM JOHN EDWARDS, I'M SO READY I HAVE TO MAKE SURE QUESTIONS GIVEN TO ME BY THE PEOLE ARE PLANTED AND THOSE THAT AREN'T HAVE TO BE PRE SCREENED, I'M SO READY I HAVE TO KILL ANY ARTICLE FROM BEING PUBLISHED IN CASE IT SAYS SOMETHING BAD ABOUT ME, I'M SO READY THAT I DIDN'T THINK I NEED TO MAKE MY CASE TO PEOPLE IN SMALL STATES LIKE WASHINGTON, NEBRASKA, DELAWARE OR VIRGINIA, I'M SO READY THAT CAUCUSES AREN'T IMPORTANT SO I DON'T HAVE TO TAKE THEM SERIOUSLY, I'M SO READY THAT EVEN IF I LOOSE 11 ELECTIONS IN A ROW IT'S STILL VIABLE TO SAY THAT I'M THE MOST EXPERIENCED AND READY ON DAY ONE AS COMMANDER IN CHIEF.

GIVE ME A BREAK!!!
Interesting perspective from the young voters
A cousin of mine in S. Texas attended Barack's rally today. I just learned that my uncle in Dallas will be voting for him. Those are two Hispanic votes that Barack has won.
"isn't he the one that said latinos are taking African-American jobs?"

______________________________________________________

NO Patty, it was Hillary Clinton who said that.  Check your fact!  What an embarrassment.
Patty, sorry but it was your pal Clinton who said Latinos would take AA jobs (LA debate).
To all you sceptics who have accused Obama repeatedly for not giving specifics, I hope you're satisfied now.
The fact of the matter is that this guy is not just all words but also substance. And I understand his arguement that you can have all of the policy ideas in this world like Hillary claims to have, but without the working majority and inspiring the American people to get involved, nothing will be accomplished. Or does anyone think the past Presidents did not try on issues like Health care? Offcourse they did, but they failded because of irresponsible partisanship which is what Obama is really tryin to avoid.
Some folks just need to get back to making their homemade nooses and quit trying to stop and hang the inevitable. Change is coming, whether thru Obama or Clinton (long as it 'aint Bush) and we, as Democrats, should be pressing to get what "we" as a country finally deserve. Heck, at this point, "ANY CHANGE WILL DO". So while your sitting there hammering a presidential hopeful, remember your voice can't be heard until it reaches the polls. Less talk and more action. Otherwise, your blowing smoke and a lot of us aren't buying.
No, Senator Obama refused to say Latinos were taking African American jobs.  Please check out the debate between Senator Obama and Senator Clinton in Los Angeles before Super Tuesday, Feb. 5.

Senator Obama was asked a question designed to get him to say that Latinos were negatively impacting African Americans.  Instead, Senator Obama said that the politics of pitting one group against another group had to end.  Senator Obama called for all groups to unite, arguing that by uniting we could make a better system for all groups, but by dividing we would be stuck in the same old system.

Senator Clinton, on the other hand, DID say during the debate in Los Angeles that Latinos were taking jobs away from African Americans.

Personally, I agree with Senator Obama's stance on the issue and this is yet another reason why I support him.

Yes we can!  Obama '08.
Young people today are by far more intelligent than those of my generation at the same age - I am a WM 68 yrs old - I got my college education as a result of the GI Bill as a Vietnam Vet - Barack cannot underestimate the value of reaching out to the future leaders of the world - they deserve every single moment of attention that we as older people can spare to keep prodding and encouraging them to do everything possible to further their education.
To young people - support Barack - he offers the best hope for solutions to your educational asperations - the present SYSTEM in Washington is so bogged down with old time politicans who owe so many favors to each other, the wheel of progress and the future has ground to a halt- can we change it?  YES WE CAN
Hillary is the one that said Latinos taking the job of Africa-American not OBAMA.

OBAMA said we can't scapepoat them, they have to make a living just like the rest of us!!!!
Patty - no, he never said that.  someone who called into one of the previous debates asked both canidates to address something along that vein.  Obama responded by saying he didn't buy the argument that immingrants are stealing jobs from African-Americans.
I think that over 14 months America has seen enough.
Obama is the most extraordinary politician that we have seen.  He can truly unite this country.  I have been on earth a long time.  No one comes close to this young man.  The only question is that if America will accept this gift from God.

************************

thank you for putting mw n my place.
I'm a republican and I know that is going to be hard with Obama against McCain, but Anybody but Clinton. People remember the past don't go for the same lie again.
I don't understand why we still in this country feel the need to cater to particular groups/races/genders etc... specifically - that is the very action that continues to harbor division.

The hispanic culture is definately a growing and important part of our country now and will be increasingly important in the future. I get frustrated seeing the candidates change the face of their message depending on whom they are trying to please. The issues that are important to the twenty-something hispanics are also important to the twenty-something african-americans, caucations, orientals etc...we are all looking for a leader to provide a safe and prosperous future and give us opportunity to attain the American dream and provide the best possible future for the next generation. That is the universal appeal to ALL of us who are PROUD TO BE AMERICAN! I am happy to say that I have been proud to be an American since I was old enough to learn what that means. Although I am not proud of all that we do (heck, I'm not proud of all the decisions I make, much less all the decisions made by the many, many people who have lead and continue to lead this nation), I am proud of what we stand for and of the sacrifice made by millions of men and women for the advancement of my freedom and the opportunity to give that to others. That should transcend race, ethnicity, gender etc...
We Latinos are a funny bunch... Who has the best give way and join the bandwagon.  Let me sell my soul for a few pesos.  Until we have our own in office, we will always be underfoot.  Viva La Raza!
Veen75, Laguna, CA : Let's just go over a few facts.
1. Bloomberg reports "Yet Clinton, according to Taxpayers for Common Sense, placed $2.2 billion worth of earmarks in spending bills from 2002-2006."
(and to think about her slamming Barack on earmarks last night..I was LOL to her hypocrisy.)
2. The biggest blunder of our generation is the illegal war in Iraq. And Hillary voted for it. This issue is not limited to different views on foreign policy positions. It has been and will have a ripple effect on social and economic wellbeing. Think about more than 2 trillion dollars or even more we will be spending by the time we get out of Iraq. Not to mention thousands of lives we lost there, and tens of thousands who got maimed physically and psychologically. I ask you "was it worth it?"
Veen75, You should check your facts it was the lovely Obama that said that. And I was a John Edwards supporter she did take his health care Obama did, Edwards plan and Clintons plan are similar yet they different. Check Your Facts
Obama also has part of if not all of Joe Biden's ideas on withdrawing from Iraq.
And Obama also took a good part of Clinton's economic plan.
Really you should also take a good look at the companies that are backing Obama. They want to raise interest rate to a least 30% (Last debate with Edwards which he was stunned that Obama would have voted for that). I could go on but, with Obama supporters they just don't care the fact is you just either dislike Clinton or you dislike women

Hopefuli my dumb self can link this correctly.

Univision poll about latinos.

Sorry to tell you it doesn't look to good for Obama.
Young Americans , I am excited that you are taking interest in this election, but please, think , research, then vote with a clean heart, not a regret that you’ve hurt your country. Young Americans are not aware of a lot of thing that took place prior to their births . They need to set back and research the facts prior to voting. If Americans are in a recession and many out of work, then where is all this money that Obama camp  is raising coming from?  Are all his voters well to do, not according to people I meant at one of his rally’s today . I was told that he has money coming into Muslim Americans accounts and then shifted to his campaign. That could explain how is able to raise millions of dollars during a recession. Does America want a to elect a President or a motivational speaker, a speaker that may be out to hurt our way of life. That could also explain why his wife may that statement, they are not for American they are out for the BIG HOUSE> Think Then  CAST YOUR VOTE FOR AMERICA
P.S. It was Obama whom said that Latino’s are taking  African Americans jobs, like just before he realized he needed Latino’s. RESEARCH !!!!

Quite the contrary Patty...

All Clintonites are all the same, can't get the facts straight.  So quick to attack just like Hillary last night at the debate and got a big boo from the crowd just like you need right now.
So, did Hillary dream up the "xerox" line, or was it written for her?
Michelle Obama got a crowd of over 2,300 fired up and ready to go in Warwick, Rhode Island at CCRI on Wednesday evening. The night was kicked off with a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem by Cumberland Mayor Dan Mckee's daughter Kara and his niece Kate.

Attorney General Patrick Lynch, an ardent Obama supporter and superdelegate introduced Michelle's brother and Brown University Head basketball coach, Craig Robinson.

Michelle took the podium and electrified the crowd. Her powerful and inspiring words left many in awe. She spoke of the difficulties regular folks face in today's world. She spoke of the difficulties families face when the bar keeps moving and what it will take to make sure every American has the opportunity to reach that bar. http://www.barackobama.com/index.php

HILLARY CLINTON’S 35 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE BS:  The first 15 years she spent in “public service” she worked for the biggest law firm in Little Rock, Arkansas.  Her goal then: make as much money as possible, ethics be damned.  Almost forgot her stint working in Goldwater’s campaign for president. Then there was White Water, Travelgate Vincent Foster, et al.  Then there was her job working at Wal-Mart where she did an outstanding job of fighting off the workers attempts to organize a union for collective bargaining.  And what a disaster her health plan was.  When she took the DC Bar exam she failed twice.  By then, she was fighting against the “Vast right-wing conspiracy.”  Stole items from the White House and later gave them back - only because she was caught. The most extensive experience this woman has is serving tea to foreign dignitaries. Claimed to be a New Yorker so she could run for the senate. She has a reputation of being the queen of earmarks and recently secured a 1.5 million dollar earmark awarded to a Harlem minister who endorsed her candidacy for President. She also has accepted more corporate donations than any of the Republican candidates.
Voted to authorize Iraq war; voted to give Bush power to go to war against Iran and voted for NAFTA.  AND: Do you want an ex-con for a Co-President?
Hey Patty, you are dumb, just agreeing with you.  You may want to consider taking a spelling lesson or use spellcheck.
Is Patty on every single post spreading lies about Obama? This blog need to ban her for defamation of character knowingly. No, Obama did not and would not say that latinos are taking jobs from african americans.I think you are a conservative republican spreading discord; or just a nasty lonely illiterate, uneducated, ignorent, untaught, uninformed person.
jaycee, thank you. That was terrific.
Latinos  vote for Senator Clinton not because they feel they must but they know her, like her, and know she has and will do all she can for them like she will everyone else too. They dont feel need to go wild cause Obama blows his nose either, they listen. They are smart and can do there own thinking. I have relatives in Tx also. some young, they are for Hillary cause they know and like her and they have her respect. Maybe some of you should look into that.
HILLARY's political maturity resonated on last night's debate. I really cannot believe people supporting Obama, he looks so immature and a little kid as compared to HILLARY! He does not even measure up to HILLARY's knowledge on politics. Hope these young people who support him are not making a mistake. I will never vote for a candidate who will be a trainee in the White House! He needs to earn it and learn it!!! Too much is at stake and I will not let my future be ruled by an amateur! LETS GO HILLARY in TX, OHIO & PA!
why do the Republicans love Obama? because they all of a sudden want universal health care????

GET REAL!!!

Hillary 08!!!
why do the Republicans love Obama? because they all of a sudden want universal health care????

GET REAL!!!

Hillary 08!!!
I am sitting at my computer crying - it has finally dawned on me that BARACK IS GOING TO WIN !!!! I am so happy I cannot stop crying with sheer joy, Barack Obama is our best hope, he will unite this country and turn our economy around, my only regret is that as a permanent resident I cannot vote for him but I have contributed to his Campaign and have voluntered to work making phone calls, I can tell you this is the first candidate that has made me want to give up my British Citizenship, I will file my citizenship application the day after he wins the presidency.
GO BARACK !!!!!
"isn't he the one that said latinos are taking African-American jobs?" -- Patty, sd, ca

NO.  By the way, which jobs are African-American jobs? I know when I was growing up in Louisiana some jobs were reserved for Blacks but not anymore. Is that still the case where you live?
Latinos aren't taking jobs from AA, no because the AA are too lazy to work those jobs, that is why the mexicans can get the jobs they do.
TO ALL COLLEGE STUDENTS;

CHECK OBAMA U.S.SENATE VOTE;  272/HF 2669 Increase financial aid for college students....  July 20, 08
       Hillary Clinton: voted YES
       Barack Obama:   DID NOT VOTE

PLEASE STUDY UP ON OBAMA BEFORE DECIDING WHO YOU WILL VOTE FOR.  VOTE IN THE PRIMARY AND PAY ATTENTION TO HOW THE CAUCUS ARE RUN.  THEY DO NOT REPRESENT THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE BECAUSE EVERYONE CAN NOT GO TO THE CAUCUS.  THIS IS THE METHOD OBAMA USED TO GET DELEGATES AND RACK UP WINS IN CAUCUS STATES. IN WASHINGTON STATE, THE PRIMARY VOTES ARE STILL BEING COUNTED AND THE CANDIDATES ARE VERY CLOSE, IN THE CAUCUS IT WAS 2 TO 1. SOME 400,000 OR MORE WASHINGTON STATE VOTERS SPOKE WITH THEIR PRIMARY VOTING...THE CAUCUS WERE NOT VERIFIABLE VOTERS. NADA VERIFICATION WAS REQUIRED AND THE DELEGATES WERE ALLOTED ONLY FROM THE CAUSUS VOTES.

I DO NOT THINK THIS AN HONORABLE WAY FOR A NOMINEE TO BE PUT ON THE DEMOCRATIC TICKET.  I WOULD EXPECT OBAMA, AS HE STATES, TO PAY ATTENTION TO THE WILL OV THE PEOPLE AND INSIST THAT THE PRIMARY VOTES BE COUNTED IN THE OVERALL TOTALS.  ALSO THAT EVERY STATE IN THE UNION MUST HAVE THEIR VOTES COUNTED.
RULES, BE DAMN, IF WE ARE A DEMOCRACY EVERY STATE MUST BE COUNTED.  IF HE DOES NOT WANT FLORIDA BECAUSE HILLARY GOT SO MANY VOTES, THEN HE IS NOT TELLING US THE TRUTH WHEN HE SAYS THAT THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE SHOULD BE THE DECIDING FACTOR.   HE HAS EXPRESSESD THAT A CAUCUS WOULD WORK FOR MICHIGAN...BUT MICHIGAN IS NOT A CAUCUS STATE.  HE REMOVED HIS NAME FROM THE BALLOT, SO MICHIGAN COULD HAVE ANOTHER PRIMARY, BUT NOT A CAUCUS WHICH DISENFRANCHIES TOO MANY VOTERS.  HE THINKS THAT THE SUKPER DELEGATES SHOULD NOT VOTE THEIR CONSCIENCE, BUT VOTE ACCORDING TO THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE, YET THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE OF FLORIDA AND MICHIGAN IN HIS MIND MUST NOT BE A PART OF THE UNITED STATES.
ALL AMERICANS DESERVE TO HAVE THEIR VOICES HEARD,
WE WANT A PRESIDENT WHO REPRESENTS EVERY STATE IN THE UNITED STATES.  BUSH WAS PUT INTO OFFICE IN
QUESTIONABLE WAYS, LET'S NOT GO THIS ROUTE AGAIN PLEASE.  WE DESERVE A FAIR ELECTION IN SELECTING OUR DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE.  (Don't forget we still have 15 states who do not have tamper/proof paper-trail ballot machines which will be used in November)
AMERICANS DESERVE BETTER.
http://www.univision.com/content/channel.jhtml?chid=3&schid=10414

I don';t think Jorge Ramos likes Obama. LOL he is blasting him.

Every politician has his/her own beliefs, even Bush has them. The larger and more important question we should ask ourselves is this - " Do we want another 4 years of Bush mentality?" I am not so much concerned about Hillary's vote for Iraq. The mind boggling thing is though she refuses to admit that her vote was a "mistake," whatever her reasons may be - political or personal. Bush even in the face of reality to this day refuses to admit the war in Iraq is a mistake. In our President, I want to see a leader not only of sound judgment and vision, but also of character and of willingness that when a mistake is made, he is willing to listen to reason & other views to correct the mistake. The President of the USA has the most influence not only on our lives in the States, but also on every individual on earth. If we choose a wise President, the people will be the most benifited. If not, all the people of this nation and other nations will suffer as a natural consequence. Thousands of our soldiers lost for ever and tens of thousands of civilian lives lost in Iraq never to return.
Latinos aren't taking jobs from AA, no because the AA are too lazy to work those jobs, that is why the mexicans can get the jobs they do.

OH Juan you better watch out the mob is going to be after you. How dare you speak the truth.
Barack Obama won the Hispanic/Latino vote in the Potomac/Connecticut/Illinois primaries. His #s have increased in that demographic. Texas' seven largest newspapers endorsed Barack Obama. He was also endorsed by:

La Opinion
The largest Spanish-language newspaper in the country

Hoy, the most widely circulated Spanish-language newspaper in Chicago.

-Puerto Rican Gov. Anibal Acevedo Vila
-San Antonio's(TX) second Hispanic mayor, Ed Garza
-Rep. Ana Hernandez, of Pasadena
-Rep. Charlie Gonzalez, D-San Antonio
-State Rep. Pete Gallego(TX), chairman of the Mexican American Legislative Caucus
-Mexican American Democrats(TX) endorsed Senator Barack Obama
-George Lopez, a TV and film Star and comedian, very famous Latino celebrity
-Dallas Cowboys great Emmitt Smith  endorse Barack Obama(obviously not Hispanic--but I thought he needed a mention).
and others...
Hey Patty, We really don't care whether you support Obama or not, because the rest of the World is showing him plenty love and support.  You probably can't vote anyway. By the way, don't fool yourself, Latinos Love Obama Too.  You are very bias and that's why the world is so divided
Thanks Jaycee....
