Obama woos young Latinos

Posted: Friday, February 22, 2008 2:26 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan
Edinburg, TX -- In a move to woo Latino voters, especially under 30, Obama held a roundtable on college affordability and a rally at the University of Texas Pan American here in South Texas today.

Sitting on a high stool surrounded by about 25 students and about a dozen cameras, Obama went through the broad parts of his education plan, which includes a $4,000 tuition tax credit for students per year of college in exchange for 100 hours of community service per year.

It's the campaign's hope that by stressing issues of concern to young people that they can appeal to younger Latinos. An Obama aide told reporters that Latinos in Texas are younger than those in other parts of the country and -- potentially -- more open to Obama's candidacy.

Referencing his days of being a college professor, Obama warned the students that he would start calling people if they didn't volunteer to speak up. He also, as he does often in these situations, invoked his own personal story and that of his wife's saying that they were paying off their student loans until recently.

"Michelle and I are very sensitive to the fact that the only reason we are where we are today is because we got an education. There were kids who were smarter than us more talented than us but they didn't have the choice that we did."

The discussion was livelier than most town halls, and students veered the discussion away from Obama's plans to a sticking point among many college students: loans are often determined by the federal government and higher education organizations based on parental income without proper consideration given to a family's situation or if students are living on their own.

Obama confessed ignorance on the issue of how loans are determined, saying that it would depend on if parents were claiming educating their children as a tax deduction.

But throwing a populist pitch into the fray he said, "The [current] model is built around a bunch of co-eds on Ivy League campuses." He refrained from mentioning that at one point he was one, too.

But while much of the criticism focused on obtaining loans, interest rates, and the need for more government aid, Obama made only a mention of how tuition and fee increases by universities have helped to ramp up student debt.

"I taught law at the University of Chicago for ten years and law profs write their own texts and assign it to their students and they make a big mint.  It's a huge racket.  We have to keep costs down, fees down, and students should lower their expectations," he said.

He also warned students that they didn't need to stay in school forever. "I don't want you staying in there for 20 years," he joked about the possibility of government funding.

And emphasizing skilled trades, he added that he didn't think "everyone needs a PhD."

"Be careful about those credit cards. Don't eat out as much, eat in," he said.

He ended the event with the plea, "Remember early voting. But I won't tell you who to vote for."

Lmao! Patty, please put a lid on it. Girl, u can't spell in English and want us to go to a Hispanic sight to decipher a language not all of us speak. But I'm sure Jorge will be proud u represented him with one hand on the old beer can and the other blogging. Nice try; NOW GET BACK TO CLASS BEFORE THE BELL RINGS.
Veen75, You should check your facts it was the lovely Obama that said that. And I was a John Edwards supporter she did take his health care Obama did, Edwards plan and Clintons plan are similar yet they different. Check Your Facts
Obama also has part of if not all of Joe Biden's ideas on withdrawing from Iraq.
And Obama also took a good part of Clinton's economic plan.
Really you should also take a good look at the companies that are backing Obama. They want to raise interest rate to a least 30% (Last debate with Edwards which he was stunned that Obama would have voted for that). I could go on but, with Obama supporters they just don't care the fact is you just either dislike Clinton or you dislike women

I can't vote for Obama (Sent Friday, February 22, 2008 3:05 PM)

Actually YOU should check your facts:

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/01/31/dem.debate.transcript/

OBAMA: Well, let me first of all say that I have worked on the streets of Chicago as an organizer with people who have been laid off from steel plants, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, and, you know, all of them are feeling economically insecure right now, and they have been for many years. Before the latest round of immigrants showed up, you had huge unemployment rates among African-American youth.

And, so, I think to suggest somehow that the problem that we're seeing in inner-city unemployment, for example, is attributable to immigrants, I think, is a case of scapegoating that I do not believe in, I do not subscribe to.

CLINTON: Well, let me start with the original question from Kim, because I think it deserves an answer.

I believe that in many parts of our country, because of employers who exploit undocumented workers and drive down wages, there are job losses. And I think we should be honest about that.

There are people who have been pushed out of jobs and factories and meat processing plants, and all kinds of settings. And I meet them.

You know, I was in Atlanta last night, and an African-American man said to me, "I used to have a lot of construction jobs, and now it just seems like the only people who get them anymore are people who are here without documentation." So, I know that what we have to do is to bring our country together to have a comprehensive immigration reform solution.
_________

http://credit-cards.interest.com/qanda/legal_maximum_credit_card_rate_qa.html

Federal law sets no nationwide limit on how much credit cards can charge.

While many states have usury laws that regulate the rates on all types of loans, they only apply to banks based in that state and don't protect consumers who borrow from out-of-state lenders.

That's why most major credit card companies are incorporated in Delaware or North Dakota because they have no usury laws and therefore impose no limits on how much they can charge customers across the country.

___

Credit Card companies *currently* have NO LIMIT on what they can charge in many places.  Obama said 30% was TOO HIGH, and wanted a lower rate in the area of 22% maximum.
Aren't they a nice and presdential couple to be the next president and first lady of the entire states?
I love what Obama stands for but the biggest appeal is hope.  when i look at him on T.V and see the muti-colors of people behind him that gives me, as a black man, hope.  That one day I truely will be judge on my works and not my apparence.  hope when I lay down at night and feel that all odds are aganist me that it can and has been done.  And most of all the day that I have a son and he comes to me and tell me "daddy I want to be presedent" and I tell him, he can be the presedent or anything in this world I know with all my heart that's not a lie. that to me means more than an sweat little politic store you can tell me and that whats worth voting for.
Has Michelle been to speech? Bad slur she had. glad to see its been fixed .Maybe thats really why she is NOW proud. She can put any spin on what she should have said but like her husband says works matter.
You people who say Obama is extraordinary are so pathetic, i love it! Obama is wooing all of you becuase you think he is good, listen to all the debates and his speeches, he NEVER directly answers a question and goes in circles before he gets to the point, at which time voters hear "pretty" words and "lust" over his presentation of those words, not his depth of knowledge.

In reference to Latino voters I am latino too and if he wins the latino vote, its a disgrace. Hillary fought for what Cesar Chavez believed in.

Make a wise choice, don't follow Obama because of his movement, we all know movements disband.

People, please don't get worked up over patti or juan from SD....they are same person and just want to stare up racial hate on here....for the 1st time in my lifetime....america will be united as one - not this bickering politics...I'm in my 20's and all I've known are BUSH and CLINTONs and how divided we are. My whole life I've bought into the division and politics as usual....I'm very educated and have grown quite cynical of washinton until a man named BARACK brought back hope....as cynical and persimistic as I am, I went researchign deep to prove this man a fraud.....but I keep finding nothing to pin on him.... as of today I've giving up on cynicism and my vote is for Barack.
Youths are easily be cheated with slogans, like they are easily falling into love. Can they explain why in 2001 one American Dollar=1.51 canadian Dollar, now 1 American Dollar=.99 Canadian Dollar? When they hear HOPE, wow! great! When they hear Unite, wow, great! When Obama said he will directly talk to leaders of those evil countries, people with political sense will know he is naive! But election is weird thing. Don't Forget It Was American People elected Bush over Al Gore, who won Nobel Prize now.
It will be still American People to elect Obama with media crap help.
I have been watching Obama and never once did I hear him speak that AA jobs were taken by Latinos.  Young people of America will have a much better chance at an education with Obama in the White House!  I support him all the way and I WAS a Clinton supporter at one time.  NOT NOW!  Sick of her trying to put Obama down saying she has all the solutions!  NO one can fix the mess Bush has made of this country in the past 7 + years.  It is going to take years of DEMOCRATS in the White House! Obama for the next 8 years will make a difference!!!!  Yes HE Can!!!Carolyn

Well, it seems (after reading Juan and Patty's posts) that Hillary has the ignorant racist vote sewn up. She must be so proud.
Thank You, Senator Obama, for continuing to speak with the youth of today in an appropriate and uplifting way!  They, in working with you, will be and are, our future!

Yes, we can!
Its the constant bickering and attack-like-there-is-no-tomorrow from the Clinton camp that has lead me to decide to vote for CHANGE.  Obama, my you win in a landslide.

The nastiness of the Obamabots is turning away Hillary supporters who otherwise would have voted for him in the general election as a matter of party unity. Including this one. I hope you are all happy.
"You Obamasheep sure are hateful people."
Only a crack head would support and/or vote for Osama Obama.
Was Deval Patrick holding the cue cards for Obama to read?

I'm Deval Patrick and I approve (and wrote) this message!
Even if Obama can win the nomination and the election, what kind of president do you think he'll be?  A weak black version of Jimmy Carter...I foresee a single term for this man should he win in November, and should he not hand us over to those who wish us harm like what Jimmy did.

"OH Juan you better watch out the mob is going to be after you. How dare you speak the truth."

Jaycee, that was a fantastic article to point out, thanks.
The more I read these post, the more I realize that Hillary only has blind supporters.  So much information has been posted on hear such as -- http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/2/20/201332/807/36/458633 -- detailing Obama's record and experience compared to Hillary.  Yet, Hillary supporter continue to say things such as -- "I really cannot believe people supporting Obama, he looks so immature and a little kid as compared to HILLARY! He does not even measure up to HILLARY's knowledge on politics." (Ed of LA).  Are you people to lazy too read or just a bunch of lemmings.

Do you not realize that all of your arguments against Obama are false? Maybe you just don't care.  My thing is, how can you guys claim that Obama supporters are blinding following him and don't know anything about him.  I gaurantee you the average Obama supporter knows more about Obama than most Americans know about Hillary.

Hispanics say: We know Hillary, we like her, she cares about us.  How laughable is that?  What are you guys basing this conclusion on, honestly?  What legislation has she introduced or passed on your behalf?  Is it because she ate a taco from the local restaurant?

Latinos should realize that African Americans have blazed the trail of equality for many minorities in this country (in education, politics, and corporate american). They have died and suffered for the rights of all people in this country.  Now hispanics won't vote for a black candidate.  They make comments such as "Latinos aren't taking jobs from AA, no because the AA are too lazy to work those jobs, that is why the mexicans can get the jobs they do." Juan, SD. That is just wonderful.
patty sd ca, It is either you are misinformed or you are very dishonest indeed. Obama never said such a thing. It was Hillary who said that an African American told her that Latinos were taking jobs due to low wages. Obama intervened and said that she should not scapegoat Latinos and instead the Employers who take advantage of undocumented Latinos should be blamed. Hilary again responded that we must face facts and that this is really happening. That debate was in Los Angeles. You must Be Careful with what you say.Check the record of the debate.
cecil.
It is incredible to me that we "young Americans" have only been given credit by one poster on this entire message board. We understand that we need to read up on the past. We understand that we have to take that into consideration. We also understand that the past is the reason we are here right now. As far as "reading up" is concerned we, as a generation, have more at our fingertips than any generation has ever had. And, believe it or not, we do use this information revolution to our advantage.

Please understand that I get that the two candidates policies are very similar. I also have looked at their voting record and campaign budgets quite exstensively. What I, and probably most of my age group, have come to is that Obama offers a different path to what is essentially the same goal. I am not saying it is the best path, what I am saying is that it is one that has not been traveled yet. I have looked at past candidates, I understand what has been done in the past, and I look at Clinton and see no difference. I am tired of partisan issues. I am tired of red tape. I am tired of favors that overrule constituency loyalty. I am looking for a new route. If it doesn't work, fine. Let's find a different route. But to walk down the same road that has already not worked seems silly.

I may be young but I know that if doesn't work find a better way.
Chuck ,Keith and Christ -should look at CNN That is call balance reporting not campaining for obama .Let the people decide.Christ can no longer make a good coment on Hillary ,last night at 11pm ET ,he literally restraint himself from making an analysis on Hillary.(he got the tingles in his foot ).Chuck should go .
"Only a crack head would support and/or vote for Osama Obama. "

What were you on when you voted for Bush, "Doktor"?

"A weak black version of Jimmy Carter...I foresee "

ooooh, a visionary! How exciting!

"A weak black version of Jimmy Carter"

We need strong president, like the puppet we have now!

"... and should he not hand us over to those who wish us harm like what Jimmy did."

Almost coherent. Almost. Changed my mind.
I wonder what the people at msnbc think of the mean spirited discourse that occurs with every topic posted?

AA are too lazy? According to Juan and Patty race is the factor in determining elligibilty. I understand that not everyone in this forum is a bigot or simple, yet the posts from those that are hamper effective discourse. Why are you guys like that? Do you really have a genetic beef with me, Obama or anyone else that doesn't look like you?
One more time -- NO, it was NOT Senator Obama who said that Latinos were taking African American jobs.  It was Senator Clinton who said we had to "face facts" that it was true.  Senator Obama refused to scapegoat any population.  I watched (and taped) that debate, just watched it again to verify my memory and I am correct.  Anyone who has a site (or EVEN a reference) to something different exiting Senator Obama's mouth provide that cite or reference or please refrain from Senator Obama said something that actually and definitely came out of Senator Clinton's mouth.

Go to c-span and search for California Democratic Presidential Candidates Debate.  You can watch it yourself.

As for this inneundo about who is giving Senator Obama donations -- I hope this isn't coming from Senator Clinton's supporters b/c that argument is likely to backfire with a vengeance.  Senator Clinton has taken more money from big donors, special interest PACS and lobbyists than anybody in primary history.  On the otherhand, 80% of Senator Obama's entire campaign funds come from small donors who have given under $200.  No, the facts show we really are not trust-fund babies, despite arguments to the contrary.

It is basic debate 101 that ad hominem is the last desperate act of a person who has no legitimate argument left.  Senator Clinton is a qualified candidate, folks.  I personally believe that Senator Obama is a much better candidate b/c he is the only one who thinks differently and could actually get us out of the box in which we find ourselves.

Nevertheless, those of you who support Senator Clinton -- try to find a reason why you support her, rather than just attempting to tear Senator Obama down with falsehoods, inneundo and bigoted commentary.  Have you not noticed yet that your negativity is not working?  Why don't you try out a new tact.  You would be much better advocates of the candidate you claim to support, Senator Clinton, if you told us why to join you rather than telling us why we are dumb.

It probably will not work, but you could at least leave Senator Clinton, the candidate you claim to support, with some dignity.

Yes we can!  Obama '08.
whya re you peoples wantin to made me cri?
LRA, I am a baby boomer. My generation had JFK, Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King. My parent's generation had FDR.

Nothing makes me happier than to see Barack Obama reaching out to the younger generation. And you are responding.

It's your future. Go for it. We're rooting for you, hence, our vote for Senator Obama.
Why do Hispanics like Hillary?

Glad you asked.

One of the reasons that Hispanics respect both Clintons is federal appointments and their championing of diversity.

During his 8 years in office Bill Clinton had 366 federal judicial appointments including 104 women, 23 Hispanics, 5 Asian Americans, 1 Indian American, and 61 African Americans.

Clinton famously stated in 1992 that his cabinet would look like America, and he followed through with real diversity in his appointments including cabinet positions for the following Hispanics, Frederico Peña, Bill Richardson, Aida Alvarez.

Overall Bill Clinton appointed more women to his cabinet that any other president in history with 11 total appointments including:
Madeleine Albright, Laura D'Andrea Tyson, Janet Reno, Donna Shalala, Alexis Herman, etc.
Bill Clinton had 2,160 total senate confirmed appointments of which 592 were women. Both Hillary and Bill have promoted diversity…real diversity and they have delivered.

Hillary is not a stranger to the Hispanic community. Her long-term fight for healthcare for children and for universal healthcare resonates with Hispanic communities. She has consistently promoted the interests of Hispanic communities. And she certainly is not a stranger to areas like south Texas.

Obama has no track record with Hispanics at the federal level and a very limited record in Illinois.
Everyone accuses Hillary Clinton and her husband of being divisive. Well, isn't that exactly what Michelle Obama is when she says she will not vote for anyone BUT her husband! What arrogance and hubris!!

Everyone criticizes Hillary because they feel Bill will influence how she will run the country. Well at least he has experience - and things were better while he was in power than they have been at anytime during the last 7!! If Obama wins, it appears clear that Michelle will want to have her say as to how the White House will be run. Well, two people with no experience do not equal one with experience.

America is so desparate for a saviour that they have created one in Obama - like he is the second coming of Christ ready to save the world!! He is a man - just a man- a politician no less, who is making so many promises he is sure to fail. Wake up people.
Yo, You Hillary backers are just straight out racist, liar scumbags. Seriously, and that's why you are losing. Becuase this is not yesterday, most poeple have moved on from your kind of bigotry. It gets me sick and I feel bad for your children, because racism is learned. Your children will be little SCUMBAGS.
Nobody cares if you cry - let it out- I'm sure it's been building up for years.

All your posts sound like a cry for help, anyway.
Highly educated people vote for Obama, maybe Latinos don't vote for him 'cause they're not educated..
I am sure those who are smart and educate vote for him.
I notice in this thread that there seems to be a division between young and old (boomers vs gen-xrs and younger).  Remember, JFK couldn't stop the involvement in Vietnam (nor could Johnson).  Obama says he will withdraw the troops from Iraq but has also said that the military has to be increased.  For what?  He (and some supporters here) have applauded the recent CIA attack in Pakistan.  He has made consistent statements that the efforts in Afghanistan should be increased.  Do not be surprised in couple of years that we have replaced Iraq with a low-grade war in the Afghanistan/Pakistan border...and this also helped bring about the end of the Soviet Union.
Hillary probably "borrowed" the XEROX line from one of her friends but I bet you won't hear questions from Obama about where she got it, he's too busy actually doing things instead of talking about things.

http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/2/20/201332/807/36/458633
Ok! Let's face it all you Obama fan's. Do you really know what he's capable of doing to you in the long run. How about complete idiot for experience. He's nothing more than a glorified speech expert. Please if you have any smarts to yourself. Oh! i forgot who i'm writing too, the illiterate hispanics.  Save us from a life time of mysery, go back to Mexico !!!!!!!!!
You all are going to be very sorry if Obama is the nominee.  He has no international experience (living in Indonesia as a child doesn't count) and being bi-racial is not a qualification for addressing international crisis points like Kosovo, Pakistan, etc.  McCain will trumpet Obama's lack of experience from day one and scare everyone into believing that it is not safe to have an international neophyte in the president's office.  Hillary, on the other hand, has an incredible amount of experience traveling all over the world as first lady, meeting diplomats from almost every country, serving on the Armed Services committee, etc.  The right wing of the Republican party knows they will have a field day with Obama as the nominee; now wonder they love him so much.  Get real, you people:  rhetoric and glittering generalities like hope, change, and the future will not erase Obama's lack of experience!
I am sorry you guys can't handle the truth.

NO it was Senator Clinton who said that.
Obama is the man of integrity with inspiration. The country and the world needs him right now. We should be of the solution. He gives hope and dream, and we need to do the rest by joining forces donating and involving and calling on families and friends locally and nationally to go the poll.
Yes, Latino, Obama, a black man is doing what no other Latino has ever been able to do....become President.  You should be soooooooo proud of him!!
For all those who claimed that Hillary Clinton said Latinos would take African American jobs I challenge you to go to the transcript of the Los Angelos debate at http://www.cfr.org/publication/15397/ and find that statement. She did not say that.
