Renzi to step down from McCain camp

Posted: Friday, February 22, 2008 4:14 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Adam Aigner-Treworgy and NBC's Kelly O'Donnell
On his weekly blogger conference call, John McCain said that Rep. Rick Renzi (R) would probably step down as co-chair of his Arizona campaign. McCain was unaware of the Arizona congressman's indictment until asked about it this morning after a town hall in Indianapolis, at which point he said that you always think about the family in these circumstances and he would look into Renzi's role in his campaign.

In other news, the McCain campaign says the fundraising email sent out yesterday that described the New York Times story as a "smear campaign" was its most successful fundraising email to date, but the campaign declined to say how much it raised.

Senior adviser Steve Schmidt said in response to questions, "There was a lot of outrage across the country on the story and the campaign has raised a lot of money in the last 24 hours."

So McCain is the "straight talk express" supposedly, how does that square with "The Keating 5", and this Renzi guy?

Renzi was just INDICTED folks, he is/was the co-chair of McCain's Arizona campaign.  So this guy has been making illegal deals in the same state that McCain is from, but McCain had NO KNOWLEDGE of this, and made him a chair of his AZ campaign?!?!?!?  lol.  Glad that 'Mac' is on the lookout for corruption, he can't even see it when it's in front of his face.

Do any of you short term memory having fellow Americans remember this, or did you conveniently forget?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keating_Five

Also, this fits right in with the current story from the NYT (even though it was sort of a hit job).  McCain and the lobby, McCain and cheating on his wife.....these are all things that he HAS done in the past, that's FACT 'my friends'.

McCain is a typical, dirty, long term congressman....how does that equate to 'change'?  He supports ALL of Bush's policies, how is that 'change'?

Don't let McCain fool you, he's a wolf in sheeps clothing, a warmonger, a liar, a cheater, and a fake.

Wake up America.
Well Well Well

When it rains it pours... Maybe next time Cindy McCain will keep her BIG MOUTH SHUT....You never know when Karma is going to come your way......

McCain paints himself as beyond reproach, but his circle of advisors has more lobbyists than any other presidential candidate.  The guy is a phony.
Well they maybe raising a lot of money...But I wonder how long will that last.
The revelations of this week are disappointing. At one time, I and many others had respect for McCain. Now I just have the same sinking feeling about him that I had when he campaigned for W in '04.
He makes Hillary look good.
He makes Obama look even better.
Well, let Patty and Juan from SD, CA; and J. Merle Stanley from Westchester and Cathy from Upstate, NY and their Band of Bigots run McCain's campaign. They are nonsense warriors, perhaps on drugs to think with a clean mind and express with a compassionate ehart, who might satisfy McWar. Of course, McCain is no bigot for me, but he needs a gang of warriors, but he has to learn to tame this hate monging gang and use it only to cement his warrior status.
Seriously though, I am wondering why the good guys at First Read are not comply with their own "comment poster's rules" that forbid character assassinations and childish attacks on others.
Oh I forgot this is a free speech country. But I don't think it is good for people to keep being pathological liars, as if they are majoring in propaganda. They have no cause to argue, but a cause to promote hatred, ignorance, etc.
If they truly dislike the candidate of which their hateful posts are targeting, that is nt a problem. But to post senseless comments with no facts to back up their babblings, then I don't think this palce belongs to them.
Please MSNBC, stop allowing extremissm and radicalism on this blog. You are apparently blocking comments critical of American foreign policies while allowing hate mongers to blow out out on your blogs.
I'd say, McCain has hit a rough patch.

I suspect the NYT has more on him than what it wrote. The Grand Ole Lady ain't no tabloid.

He better be ready.
American are tired of the stale and rotten politics of Washington. November will be remembered as the greatest defeat in the history of the Republican party. Go Obama. America needs you!
Only in American can a devastating article that call into question a senators ethics be used to raise money for his political campaign.  Gotta laugh or you'd cry.  I'd like to ask his first wife how many times he cheated on her.  Maybe we don't have to ask her as it is already in the public record.  This guy hasn't changed his stripes, but really who cares it's his life, but when he takes money from a lobbyest and fly's on his jet etc etc why wouldn't we question his ethics.
everybody talks about how mccain is going to hammer obama, looks like mccain will be easy pickin's for obama too me, if mccain can stay out of jail long enough to get nominated obama will be the one doing the hammering, looks like mccain is almost as dirty as the clintons

Sorry to tell you, the media has come to the conclusion that Obama won't be a choice come november.
Depite all of the things that are coming out about McCain, this timing is actually better than the general election.  It will be a been there done that attitude rather than AH HA defend yourself.

Will these matters hurt?  No not really.
Will they be talking points for Obama? Maybe, if McCain brings it p
For Hillary?  Yes, they will be talking points.
For the media? OMG YES, because there is nothing like beating a dead horse unless it is a dead horse that the Congress trying to pass through for the President to sign into law.
"McCain was unaware of the Arizona congressman's indictment "

Oh, hell. Where are you going to find a republican who ISN'T under indictment? (Besides the ones currently hiding behind "signing statements" and "executive privilege"?)
I don't recall. I wasn't aware.  It was my staff's doing.   Wow, I'm getting 1990s deja vu all over again.   McCain isn't going to be able to get away with thundering "how dare you attack my integrity my friend".

No matter who the Democratic candidate is they will argue John McCain:
· is experienced
· a war hero
· an accomplished politician

DON’T LET THEM SLIDE BY WHEN THEY SAY THIS. None of this mattered when they nominated George W. Bush over John McCain in 2000. They fell for the moron governor who failed in business, accomplished nothing as governor, had no foreign policy experience, and only got to where he was in his life because of his last name. And now they want us to nominate this same guy that they previously rejected despite his experience, war heroism, and his political accomplishments. Did John McCain really need 8 more years of seasoning? No, they just don’t like the guy and are now settling for him. DON’T LET THE REPULICAN TALKING HEADS SLIDE BY WITH THESE ARGUMENTS SUPPORTING JOHN MCCAIN. IT SAYS MORE ABOUT THESE CUT THROAT REPUBLICANS THAN IT DOES ABOUT JOHN MCCAIN WHO I ACTUALLY RESPECT ON SOME LEVEL.

Both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have:
· more experience
· accomplished more politically
· more foreign policy experience
than George Bush had when they rejected John McCain in 2000.

DON’T LET THE REPUBLICANS SLIDE ON THESE ARGUMENTS.
My faith in John is not shaken at all, he is not responsible for what Renzi did ,  the NYTs artical was nothing but an attempt to smear and blacken a good name. I refuse to let the media choose who I feel is the best to be president.  Their opinions and mine are two separate things, I don't have to print Cra- to sell a paper. I wrap my trash in newspaper and throw it out.
I'm sick of the McCain's self righteousness. He cheated on and ditched his first wife, after she was badly injured, for heiress Cindy who stole pills from her own charity. Google it.
He's a corrupt Washington insider who squeezes his POW card!
The military is casting doubt on Barack Obama’s claim during a debate Thursday night that for U.S. troops in Afghanistan, it was “easier to get Taliban weapons” than it was to be properly equipped by their own country.

Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said Friday he found the claim “hard to believe.”

“Despite the degree of skill and finesse that it takes to manage a large force with the number of deployments we have going on — and despite the stress that we have readily acknowledged on the force, one of the things we do is make sure that all of our servicemen that are going into harm’s way are properly trained and equipped with the leadership they need to be successful,” he said.

Obama’s campaign stands by his remarks, which he made during a debate with Hillary Clinton in Austin, Texas, while explaining why he feels he is prepared to be commander-in-chief and why the decision to enter Iraq demonstrated poor judgment.

During the debate, he said he was told by an Army captain heading a rifle platoon that he was sent to Afghanistan with 15 fewer soldiers than he was supposed to have because the other troops were sent to Iraq.

“And as a consequence, they didn’t have enough ammunition; they didn’t have enough Humvees,” Obama said. “They were actually capturing Taliban weapons, because it was easier to get Taliban weapons than it was for them to get properly equipped by our current commander-in-chief.”

Army spokesman John P. Boyce Jr. issued a statement saying: “Without a unit designation or time frame of deployment, it’s difficult for us to verify the validity of what was told to the senator. Our soldiers deploy as complete units — either as companies, battalions or brigades, and they do so with every soldier armed with his or her individual weapon. … Army units and individual replacements arrive in country fully capable to conduct combat operations.”

Will they please let John McCain go back to avoiding a debate with Mike Huckabee.
Don't get me wrong, I have respect for McCain and all he has done for our country, but he has just seemed rather sketchy as of late.  Not to mention he had started turning uber-conservative lately.

And Patty...  I really don't know what your problem with Obama is.  Just because he beat your candidate (most likely) doesn't mean it's a scandal or a conspiracy by the world against Hillary Clinton.  I advise you seek help, because all that pent up anger inside of you can not be healthy.
Follow the money. Karl Rove, the anonymous tipster? He's done it before. The fund raising email sent out painting the New York Times story as a "smear campaign" was their best email fund raising campaign yet. They are characterizing McCain as a conservative Republican victim. He's obviously not a conservative, but this is the way Karl Rove could get people to begin thinking of him this way. They needed an enemy to rally the troops. The NY Times obliged. The timing was the least hurtful it could be for McCain, as others have noted.
Leave McCain alone. He won't win the presidency anyway so why twist his neck unnecessarily.

Lets put this in perspective.

McCain has 24 Co Chairmen in Arizona.  It is a volunteer honorary position.

Renzi has no real role in the campaign.

The liberal media is distorting McCain's record and the american people are eating it up.

hey maybe if we get universal health care I can afford therapy. maybe the well educated Obama can pay for some grammar lessons for me.

what do you think?
Unlike you, Patty, I am not unwilling to praise candidates even if I am not planning to vote for them.  Although I support Barack Obama, I still highly respect Senator Clinton.  I actually like her health care plan.

Even though I want Obama to win, I know that I will vote for Clinton if she manages to win.  Being a rational person, unlike you, I don't go around telling nonsense about conspiracies which do not exist.  If Obama wins, I suggest you support him, unless you want more of what we have had for the past 8 years.  But it's your choice...

P.S. I don't think that Clinton's universal health care covers therapy for you.  Because last time I checked, cluelessness is not curable by a doctor...
What's the difference We know he is only the front man anyway. He sold out and the party boys conntrol everything down to who gets a job as a Park ranger!! So get real character is not an issue Republics do not need it. They have 'The Crew' ratf---krs and Bag men and women after all they are not sexist
I love it. Conservatives were unsure about McCain when he appeared to be an ethical man. Now that scandal has engulfed him they recognize him as one of their own.
This one is so easy it is almost not worth writing about.  McCain is just plain unwilling to acknowledge his own past and that is just one of those hard to swallow straight talking facts.  McCain said publicly that he didn't meet with Paxson & the lady lobbyist before going to bat for them on the TV deal BUT THE TRUTH IS THAT HE DID. McCain, bless his heart, has been so rash and imprudent in so many ways and on so many topics that I believe he will just keep getting boxed in by the truth no matter what he says or does.
The liberal media is distorting McCain's record and the american people are eating it up.
Jason (Sent Friday, February 22, 2008 5:31 PM)

Uh Jason, I don't think the "Liberal Media" forced McCain to have 26 lobbyists working for his campaign. What is it with right wingers and their liberal media schtick?? Anyone with eyes and ears can see that for example, CNN/MSNBC have been leaning far right lately eg. (Glenn (Bobblehead) Beck, Lou (Send em' all back) Dobbs.

You can't turn on the TV or radio without encountering some NeoCon blowhard telling us how evil liberalism is.

Why don't you quit worrying about the 'liberal' media and start a fund to help out all the many, many republicans embroiled in sex and money scandals? Just a suggestion, you might feel better.

Unlike the rest of you, I am still sane. First, I have voted in every election & primary, I have been eligible for. I have not voted for a party presidential candidate since I voted for Perot. I spent 1966-1969 in the U.S. Army. No, I did not dodge the draft likes the rest of you thumb suckers, who were afraid of having your ass shot off. The real hoot is you go to target shooting. The targets, I shot at, shot back. I was in 'Nam and came back whole physically.
The Times was a little skimpy on the facts. If you watched the interview with the New Republic yesterday. I think the exact quote was there were no facts or smoking gun. There are no hotel tabs, or anyone who saw them in a compromising position. As far as Hillary is concerned. She carries more conspiracies and baggage then McCain. Obama hasn't been vetted yet. But, the nasty stuff should come out just about when he is nominated.
The best bet is everyone runs alone. No contributions from yourself, corporations, no party donations, zip, none. They are alloted time on radio and TV equally. And recieve a nominal sum, for things they made need like a new bicycle. Take the money out of the equation, and you will put back in people who have worked for a living. No pensions, 401K with 3% contribution, BC/BS with they pay 25%.
They recieve already too much pay, to many holidays and at least a month vacation.
John McCain is weak on economy and no plan to rebuild our ailing economy. He said" I still need to be educated" What a joke! We are sending some one in the White House who has very little knowledge about our economy which is the most vital part of our national strength. He wants to run our country by military knowledge and foreign policy.

John McCain said that Health care is an option and should be decided by individuals. Is not that failed policy on health care we had for decades? It is shame that our health care system ranks 37th in the world. So what’s the good of being the wealthiest and strongest nation on earth? McCain can enjoy the federal health care plan for himself with out a word but when time to share the same plan with American people then it becomes a bad policy. What hypocrisy? If it’s not double standard than what is?

John McCain may be war hero but him definitely a war monger. He talks about war all the time and hoping for more wars to come. He plays the same fear tactics of Karl Rove and Bush Cheney doctrine. His foreign policy “with us or against us" will lead us to more chaos and instable world.
John McCain claims that Senator Obama is all about rhetoric and no substances on speeches. This is same kind of negative attack he made on Romney during the campaign. McCain promotes that his campaign is all about positive messages and he wants to engage in a gentlemen debates. But this is lie and he can no longer cover his smear campaign tactic which he deliberately promoting. He thinks that he is a media darling and being many years in the senate and as a Vietnam War veteran he will get a blank check of approval from the public and the media. He thinks he has the issues to talk about. Yes, he can only talk about war and foreign policy but make no mistake that the same policy and propaganda, he is talking now led us to a costly war.
I'AM BEEN GONE FOR A WHILE, IS THAT "OLD FART" MCCAIN STILL IN THE RACE ? BOY I BET THE REPUBLICAN RIGHT IS HAVING NIGHTMARES, YOU KNOW WITH HIS PAST "SEXUAL" ESCAPADES AND ALL.
The next debate moderator should ask for a clear answer on the illegal immigrant solution. Are the fines and back taxes due to obtain a "green card" or when applying for U.S. citizenship? If for the later, there are millions of green card holders in the country just to make money and qualify for Social Security and then go back to their home country. Except for voting privileges and to hold some high security jobs they have the same benefits as our citizens hsve. Let's hold the candidates to state their position on this issue, not like McCain stated he will secure the borders and talk about the rest LATER.
everybody talks about how McCain is going to hammer Obama, looks like McCain will be easy pickin's for Obama to me, if McCain can stay out of jail long enough to get nominated Obama will be the one doing the hammering, looks like McCain is almost as dirty as the Clinton's

Or as dirty as OBAMA.  The repukes will want to know why his judgement is so poor when he CONSUMED HARD DRUGS AND BOOZE IN HIS SWEET CAREFREE YOUTH? A mere few years ago?
I suspect there is no Patty in SD CA but she/he is the best fun on this blog ever.  Well maybe not as much fun as the love affair between Carrie and Mark.  Boy those "Were The Days Of Our Blog!  The FOD were a marvel to behold and a story still untold!
Think about this:

NYT endorsed mccain for the presidency. They may have developed this strategy on purpose to strengthen him. Running with this story even though we know mccain is in thick with lobbists, allowed him to mend the conservative rift and bring them rushing to his side. this was a calculated plan by NYT and mccain to fill his coffers and bolster his support...and it worked because the media is too lazy to figure this out. either there is more to the story or my theory holds truth because no reputable paper would stake their rep on something like this.
Why is it that everytime something that does'nt smell right in the Republican party that all you people ever do is badmouth them. I didn't see any of that when you your side was in the fire like the congressman with hot money in his freezer. Lighten up people , politics is all corrupt, as are most of the politicians. you think that  hillary and Obama are sqeeky clean ? Me thinks not my friends, just look at the past concerning both of them.
Are you packing me??  ANOTHER Republican indicted?  Say it ain't so, Joe!

Every time I hear the right-wing pundits decry the call for change because "the economy isn't so bad", or "why would we want to change the huge success that is the Iraq war", I wonder how many of them are ready to come clean, and admit the C-word might just have more to do with issues and events that contain names like DeLay, Abramnoff, Foley, Craig, Libby, Gonzales, Brown, Meyers, etc...etc...etc....?
I think the WH will be so much more interesting when just FOLKS fill the place with song and dance!
I HOPE things CHANGE and Patty and I can visit there often.  Imagine all the people.........
NO one has been bamboozled, not one person right Obama? No one has been film flamed right Obama? How come your words have not been said since you left SC? The folks were pretty much drinking your kool aide, gallons of it! The language of folks has sort of left the building right Elvis, yup!
The NYT has always played kingmaker when it comes to elections. They think they can manipulate the elections their way which is usually against convervative candidates. The Washington Post plays the same way. The NYT is only trying, much as CBS and ABC does, to manipulate the slant. Did McCain have an affair? So why is a Republican with past romantic encounters such a big deal to the media when their pal Bill Clinton had many such rumors and innuendos in the elections and in office and the media moguls largely gave him a free pass. It was only the Linda Tripp tapes and blue dress catching the wave of innuendo that got this in the open. Until then, big media largely laughed at it.

There seems to be 2 standards here... one for liberal Democrats and one for everyone else. The NYT etc should simply be journalists... reporting news and facts and not playing kingmaker.
Just returned from reading all the hate sites on first read----Patty----keep up the good work---you have the obamanoids tied in knots. They have run out of descriptions of how to hate and insult you.You have brought out their true natures. Now I will close this site and go to a less ugly site, where people actually discuss the issues without all the violence. Is it true that schuster is back on msnbc? Is he pimping for Obama?
The radical right totally hated McCain until its revealed that he favors the well connected. Cheats on his wife and the lies about it. Sounds positively right to me.
Funny that a leader in McCain's Campaign was indicted for "undo influence" of a lobbyist just after McCain was  reported to have "undo influence" of a lobbyist as NY Times reported.  The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
Yeah. Lobbysts and his clients must use the ocation to inject money in his campaing. Mckain is a profesional in taqke, run and hide.
OBAMA BARACK will win all of the states around the world.Clinton will lose her swing voters of latins, etc.
I beleive that we had the best line up of democrat presidential canadates that I have saw in my 71 years of life. Some I liked a little better than others.I would have been happy with any of them, but I think we are down to the best two choices.I don't think we can go wrong with which ever one of them win.I like Hillarys health plan better but I like his idea of cleaning up the scum in Washington. If one of them wins I would like to see them make John Edwards attourney general. That should clean up some of the rif-raff.
This election is going to suck.  All the drama will be played out before the conventions.  There's supposed to be a dance.  We shouldn't be getting this many whiffs of scandal until May.

Until then it's supposed to be non-answer answers, obfuscation, a few negative ads about how we can't be sure the candidate likes puppies, etc.

Then sometime in earl April we should start hearing rumors about one of the candidates occasionally wandering off and going astray for several minutes.

In the days that follow they are found sitting alone in their room stroking a lambs wool sweater.  Then around mid-May the pictures surface; leather harnesses, a sheep, and a stack of old Crochet Monthlies.

But you can only have the good sex scandal when there are more than two candidates.  But since the MSM, including the cast of buffoons at msnbc, only fed us the Clintbama Show--for over a year now.

I really thought you people would have been over it by this past January and started looking at guys like Biden, Dodd, and most obviously Bill Richardson; the first Latino candidate to run for President with a resume longer than virtually everyone else in the race combined, and with policies which are now being adopted by Clintbama (though more so by Clinton).  He was the only candidate talking about getting out of Iraq by the end of 2009, until this past January.  That began to resonate with voters so Clintbama adopted his positions like the frickin' Borg, while the media continued to ignore him.

Now of course that Clintbama smells like the Governor's hind quarters he is getting some press.  Let's face it, Obama and Clinton could both use him as their VP and/or Secretary of State and/or Secretary of Indian Affairs (a cabinet level position Gov. RIchardson planned to create, and one that is long overdue).  Hey , is it too late to nominate him now?  Maybe we'll get lucky and Clintbama will consume each other's brains before the convention.

Maybe if Richardson wore sequined jackets and cowboy hats you would have paid to a little more attention to the rest of the field and we wouldn't be stuck with trying to figure out who's going to bring us change we shouldn't believe in on day 1 -- IN THE MIDDLE OF FEBRUARY!!!

Maybe John Adams was right about the mob.
This story is about the crook Renzi, not McCain. Every republican politician of small note is part of McCain's Arizona Campaign committee. It's a honorary tittle and most of those people have nothing to do with McCain exept that they live in the same state. In Renzi's case even that is debatable. He "moved" here from virginia when there was an open republican seat up for grabs but basically was parachuted in to that by the republican party. It is the national party that has kept him there, even though there were lots of rumors about that man when he first ran here in the 1'st district. You wonder why that party continues to support those crooks but in 2006 the republicans had no choice. Had they not stuck with the incumbant the seat probably would have gone democratic. Apparently the republicans considered that a worse fate than sticking with the guy who, by 2006, had a lot of baggage. Well, as usual, the chickens have come home to roost. Now he not only hurts his party here in Arizona but also gives his party's nominee another bit of attention he could do without right now. I hope he resigns but he probably will be like that senator  and hang on as long as possible.
The NYT investigates everyone, Democrats and Republicans. They are not meant to be kind, they are meant to research and bring to light anything that might help the citizen. The Republicans blame them for the bad news. The Republicans are still blaming Clintons for all that is wrong even as the Republican governments of the past and present have got this country into financial and political messes. Blame, Blame others and give more money to someone who promises to take the country backward where they believe the answers are found. It is a bankrupt party with bankrupt leaders and bankrupt ideas, but plenty of the nation's money and they aim to keep it that way.
