Clinton on the attack

Posted: Saturday, February 23, 2008 1:48 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli, NBC’s Ron Allen and Christina Jamison
CINCINNATI -- Making an implicit comparison between President Bush and Obama, Hillary Clinton warned an audience this morning that change for change's sake is not necessarily a good thing.

"He promised change as a compassionate conservative," she said referring to Bush, "and the American people got shafted."

The line, delivered with a passion not always seen from the New York senator, brought the hundreds at Cincinnati State College to their feet.

"Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me," she continued.

The Obama campaign responded by sending along a quote from Clinton Communications Director Howard Wolfson: "If you want to talk about tactical political maneuvering, it's about one Democrat comparing another Democrat to George Bush. That's the worst kind of tactical political maneuvering."

After the talk, she continued to take the fight to Obama while talking to reporters, displaying two of Obama's direct mail attack pieces, which she called “blatantly false” and claimed that his rhetoric doesn’t match reality.

"Let's have a real campaign,” she said, her anger palpable. “Enough with the speeches and the big rallies... Shame on you Barack Obama... Meet me in Ohio. Let's have a debate about your tactics and your behavior in this campaign.”

At a press conference later in the day, Obama said the mailers are accurate and that he's puzzled why Clinton is raising them now, since they have been around for at least several days.

"It makes me think there is something tactical about her getting so exercised this morning," Obama said in Columbus, Ohio. "Sen Clinton as part of the Clinton administration supported NAFTA. In her book, she called it one of the administration’s successes."

A supporter had showed Clinton the mailers in the rope line earlier at the event. One mailer is about NAFTA, and uses a Newsday quote saying Clinton says it was a "boon" to our economy. She claims never to have said that and that Newsday printed a correction. The second mailer is about health care and says her plan would force people to buy policies they cannot afford. It is the one that resembles the Republican Harry and Louise ad.

Clinton also fielded questions about her campaign's spending habits, saying that the money goes directly to communicating with voters, and defended her position on NAFTA, saying she was not in the Senate to vote for it and has criticized it since she entered the Senate.  When asked about the fact that NAFTA was enacted when her husband was in office, she said it was negotiated by the first President Bush.

The Clinton campaign also held a conference call to criticize the Obama mailers with Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, a Clinton supporter, and Wolfson.

"Quite frankly Sen. Obama is sending out information in the mail in Ohio that is apparently quite false in some of its claims regarding Sen. Clinton and NAFTA," Strickland said.

Wolfson followed up with some past pro-NAFTA statements made by Obama, one apparently in Illinois to a group of farmers. Wolfson said there is a "pattern" of Obama saying different things to different groups.

Clinton also began a town hall meeting here last night by acknowledging the Dallas police officer who died after an accident while driving in her motorcade this morning. She then tied the plight of the officer’s family to that of other families struggling in America today.

Clinton told the audience at Columbus State College that the late Victor Lozada left behind four children, two of whom were in college. “I thought of the help that that family will need, and the hope that they will have the educational and other opportunities that we want for all of our young people,” she said. “Certainly we hope for every young person in America today the opportunity to live up to his or her God-given potential and to have all of the support that is needed from great institutions like Columbia [sic] State and others.”

On stage with Clinton for the invitation-only event were four individuals who talked about their experiences during challenging economic times. Jason White, a CSU grad who now helps construct new school buildings in the state, talked about how building green created jobs beyond just those directly related to building. “You are singing my song,” Clinton said.

Another panelist was Wally Ohert, an electrician from Columbus and father of 12 children. Ohert became emotional as he told his story, of suffering a massive heart attack and the challenges he faced after.

“We need to be able to look and feel good about our grandchildren,” said Ohert, who has 17. “Somebody asked me, you know, well why are you supporting Hillary. Well, there are 17 of them.” Ohert also thanked Clinton for saying she would reevaluate trade agreements, including NAFTA, which has become a major focus of the Ohio race.

“I will revise NAFTA to have very strong labor and environmental standards, to remove the provisions that give foreign companies the right to challenge laws that protect our workers, which I don’t think is something in America’s interests,” Clinton said later. “We will have stronger enforcement mechanisms and we will review these trade agreements every five years. We’re not gonna let them go without evaluating and find out whether they’re helping or hurting the American economy.”

Clinton also took a few questions during the subdued event, including one that addressed education. She launched into the flaws of No Child Left Behind, noting that states like “President Bush’s state, Texas” were “embarrassed by the scores, so they just made the tests easier.” Someone in the audience shouted out, asking whether Bush would even pass the test. Clinton laughed, and said, “There are so many things I could say to that, but I’ll just get in trouble for nearly anything I’m thinking.”

NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan also contributed to this report.

*** UPDATE *** The Obama campaign sends along this response: “Everything in those mailers is completely accurate, unlike the discredited attacks from Hillary Clinton’s negative campaign that have been rejected in South Carolina, Wisconsin, and across America. We look forward to having a debate this Tuesday on the facts, and the facts are that Senator Clinton was a supporter of NAFTA and the China permanent trade treaties until this campaign began.  And she herself has said that under the Clinton health care plan, she would consider ‘going after the wages’ of Americans who don't purchase health insurance, whether they can afford it or not.”

Also, Newsday did not issue an explicit correction. It did call Obama’s NAFTA mailer “misleading,” but here’s the full context of what it wrote:

Because it's raised questions -- with Clinton criticizing Obama for making ‘false claims’ in the mail piece -- we've looked into the chart. In it, we did not have the Clinton campaign using the word "boon" in describing NAFTA. The word was our characterization of how we best understood her position on NAFTA, based on a review of past stories and her public statements. Tasini called for scrapping NAFTA in 2006. She did not.

We do not have a direct quote indicating her campaign told us she thought it was good for the economy at that time. Also, for that matter, Clinton's campaign did not contact us to question the item after it appeared in print.

Obama's use of the citation in this way does strike us as misleading. The quote marks make it look as if Hillary said ‘boon,’ not us. It's an example of the kind of slim reeds campaigns use to try to win an office. That said, we should have been clearer.

The drumbeats by the conservative commentators like Bill Bennet may have more material on Michelle Obama for next week after her Princeton thesis which was supposed to be sealed until November reveals her thoughts on Black-White race relation.

Michelle Obama's "For the first time in my adult lifetime I am really proud of my country", may "fire up and ready to go" those reluctant conservatives to vote for war hero John McCain.

The Cindy McCain incident is also an example of how the Republicans will use Michelle Obama statement to motivate their conservative base with 30 seconds commercials.

Now, we have Michelle Obama' Princeton thesis may give those conservatives more ammunition with excerpt like the following:

“I have found that at Princeton, no matter how liberal and open-minded some of my white professors and classmates try to be toward me, I sometimes feel like a visitor on campus; as if I really don’t belong. Regardless of the circumstances under which I interact with whites at Princeton, it often seems as if, to them, I will always be black first and a student second,”
Hilary Clinton accusing Barack Obama of doing the exact same thing that she's such a pro at doing, and then trying to say "Shame on you" with a straight face? I suppose her closing comments in Thursday night's debate were nothing more than thin veneer, and her true colors have come shining back through. Desperate times call for desperate measures. I'm voting for change, and I hope you'll all join me.
Mother Clinton is back!
You go Hiliary....show us how well you can fight.  You are a fighter we that love you know it.  Keep showing that to the American people.
"Meet me in Ohio. Let's have a debate about your tactics and your behavior in this campaign.”

Um, wow, that's a real brave challenge you've made there Hillary, considering there's already a debate scheduled in Ohio for Tuesday.

I think I've got whiplash from watching this Clinton campaign. So much for the conciliatory little speech at the end of the last debate (which, by the way, is not featured in a new Clinton campaign commercial).  I'm sure she'll have guns blazing in the debate on Tuesday. What a turnaround from Thursday's debate. I guess she's trying everything on for size to find something that works. Pathetic.
Poor Hillary - trying so hard, throwing every piece of garbage against the wall as she goes...

...all for naught.
I'm shocked.  Do you mean to say Senator Obama is engaging in politics as usual?
I hope...

because Obama can find a sentence with two hands and a flashlight (Thanks American President).

I still to this day do not understand why people believed that Pres. Bush, who does not exhibit nor demonstrate intellect on any level won the election over the class nerd in 2000 and again in 2004 against someone who was stiff but at least showed signs of life.

Anyway, boo hoo, we are here and to compare Pres. Bush and Sen. Obama without comparing the diverse differences in character and intellect just does not seem to fit the arguement.  Oh, and Obama never said that HE would be a compasionate conservative.
That is low Hillary.  So so low.  I hope you realize the backlash that is now heading your way.  Shame on you.
"While Senator Clinton takes a break from her 'likability tour' to go back on the attack, Senator Obama, the only major candidate who opposed both the Iraq war and the rush to war in Iran, will continue to demonstrate why he has the judgment to turn the page on the Bush-Cheney foreign policy," Obama's campaign spokesman Bill Burton said.
Back to her old tricks, that did not take long.
Sen. Clinton's campaign is as graceless as it is full of lies.
First how does she explain the Karl Rove type mailers she used about Obama like the abortion issue.  It seems to me she wants to mandate Health care, so how are you going to do that, she said she would garnish wages. Well for me that would sometimes mean paying bills or buying health innurance.
As for the NAFTA thing I sure never heard her saying anything about it until this race started.
what a looser she need some help  she makes bad example of women

woman for obama 08
Playing Latinos and African-Americans against each other, a scheme where every one looses, is part of the cynical politics of the past, which Barack Obama has come forward to replace. It is past time to put the politics of the past to rest.

Obama will see you in Cleveland Hillary, and no tears from you please, enough of your Bi-polar dis-orders
Hillary is sounding desperate.  The 567 "American Leadership Project" looks very similar to the Swift Boat Group that was put together to discredit John Kerry when he was running against Bush. The Clintons, as in the past, will stop at nothing to win.  Meanwhile, Obama remains a gentleman.  GO OBAMA!
Wow...she is really mad!!! When you are getting embarassed in front of the entire world it's understandable though. Does she not realize that this makes her look 100 times worse? She sounds like an angry bitter old woman (alot like my grandmother actually) and no one wants to feel like they are being scolded by their grandmother when they are listening to a speech. Plus is she really trying to attack Obama for dirty politics? Did she fall and bump her head during South Carolina and Wisconsin? She is the epitome of dirty misleading politics and looks like a complete idiot even attempting to bring this up. MY HOW THE MIGHTY HAVE FALLEN.....
Ohio Dem here, I got the mailers that upset Clinton/ ,  She should be upset. Low blow politics Obama-  You talk about a new way but you swinging dishonest low blows. I would of been thrilled with either this fall but not anymore.
She is a fundamentally flawed candidate.  It's never about her.  It's always about how wrong Obama and his "deluded" supporters are.  How many debates do you need exactly, Hillary?  She oozes petty negativity and has run one of the worst, most mismanaged, campaigns in political history.  Hopefully for the good of this country, this will be over on March 5.
Enough is Enough.... Who can blame Hillary for the frustration of his two faced double talk!!! Vote for change alright, I'm sick of seeing liars, hypocrits, and fake personalities like him!!!  Let's watch the media pretend he's a victim again!!
The Re-imagining of Hillary Clinton-

Rather than attempt to sway votes, I want to discuss what it means when people who have put personal ambitions ahead of principles suddenly reimagine their life histories to achieve immediate goals. Hillary Clinton not only has not spent the majority of her life “working for poor families,” but she used her sizable clout as First Lady to defeat, suppress and ultimately disempower those dedicating their lives to this cause. Her supposed mentor, Marian Wright Edelman of the Children’s Defense Fund, was among those pleading with Ms. Clinton to oppose welfare “reform” in 1996 -- to no avail. The historical record shows that Clinton has not spent her life working for poor families, poor children, or fighting for King’s principles; rather, she chose to lend her considerable talents to a six-year stint on the Wal-Mart Board of Directors, and as an attorney represented banks, Wal-Mart and other corporate interests with the Rose Law Firm in Arkansas. Granting Senator Clinton this fictional and reimagined personal history as a poor person’s advocate demeans those who actually have spent their lives working for the poor. It is particularly outrageous when federally funded legal service programs -- upon whom the poor depend -- were slashed to the bone during the Clinton presidency...
-
...Unlike thousands in her generation who sought to organize among the poor to fulfill Dr. King’s legacy, or who joined Cesar Chavez working for economic justice for farm workers, or who worked to unionize low-income women, or who worked for legal services or in civil rights law firms, Hillary Clinton pursued a corporate path.
That was certainly her right. But having taken that path, Senator Clinton has no right to sell an imaginary version of herself as having dedicated her life toward working for poor people.
For Hillary Clinton, that was the road not taken...

I'd give anything to handle this one for Obama.  I'd love to discuss campaign behavior with Senator Clinton. Her denigration is still ringing in my ears and will never fade from my heart.  Just this once, my sincere hope is Obama will blast her with realities of her improprieties during this race.  If he can't I volunteer to discuss it with her.  From a non-biased view.  An American Female perspective.  I fit her target group, oh, if Creator would only grant me this - .
Another sound bite! If only there were some unexpected questions proferred on the upcoming debate...dealing with issues not yet addressed.  Give them the unexpected issues, not previously covered in debates. i.e. Do either of them have any goals regarding our electoral processes to better safeguard against fraudulent and dual voter registration?  What should the federal government due to (federal elections) to help ensure there are no disenfranchised voters and that each vote is counted lawfully?  How can we better ensure the sanctity of our electoral processes?  After all, this is only about the core of our democracy.
What about FEMA?  What are their plans to better implement emergency services for victims of national disasters?
Does either one have a plan to take care of those 9/11 firefighters and other responders who desperately need better benefits and medical care but can't afford it? And what about HRC's tax returns?  We have yet to see an 'on air' query.
We know what their 'stances' are on immigration, the war and all the other talking points covered ad nauseam. There are many other issues that are important too.  Catch them off guard - ask what they haven't been asked about before at 'debates'.
And shame on Campbell Brown (CNN) for the shabby and trite questions in their attempt to 'create news'.  Worse moderator ever.  So disappointed in John King.  And shame on all media for not taking the road less traveled.  Now, that would not only be real news, but something quite valuable for all of us.  Quit playing gotchas and play fair.  Both the candidates and the media should be required to think, not merely repeat catch questions and responses.  It is the moderator's role to facillitate, not instigate!
Looks like she decided to go out without class after all.  Too bad for her.  But by now Hillary Clinton is almost irrelevant to this campaign.
Sock it to em Hillary, the arrogant little twerp is a wind bag!  The empty rhetoric he spews is worthless!  How are his little words going to help us solve the vast problems America faces.
Every time an EXPERIENCED Senator puts out a plan, OBAMA COPIES it, every time a speech comes out OBAMA copies it. The big boys will knock him on his ass when he comes to the sermon on the REALLY, REALLY BIG MOUNT!
You have the most SUPER delegates, do not worry Hillary they will be there for you, it has been planned, he is the sacrificial lamb.
Oh please Wolfson.  Hillary said in the debate the other night how proud she was to be with Barack Obama, and then says this stuff to crowds when he is not around.  Who is it really that is running a dirty campaign!  She doesn't even have the courage to say what she really thinks when they are face to face.
Go Hillary. She is right to attack. Obama has attacked all along and yet she has been held to another standard that he himself set up: any attack on Obama is negative politics, any attack on Hillary is just fine. Obama's health system will not work because of the opt-out he offers. We force people to wear helmets, we force all people to pay sales tax, we have laws to punish those who have no car insurance yet Obama offers a program that will immediately fail for the opt-out he offers. If all pay, it is cheaper for me. If many opt-out, I still have to pay for their emergencies, their medical attention, and their children's medical attention. Wake up America, Obama is not the best candidate.
Guess I will reach into my pocket and send more to Barack.
The Clinton campaign cannot make up its mind. It's always changing its message. SCHIZOPHRENIC!

Viz., : Clinton Communications Director Howard Wolfson: "If you want to talk about tactical political maneuvering, it's about one Democrat comparing another Democrat to George Bush. That's the worst kind of tactical political maneuvering."
Hillary is right! Fool me twice, shame on me! No to obama!

Yeah, let's stop having big rallies!!!

Let's meet in small, half-empty, venues.  Let's get real!!

I see Mark Penn is back.

Mark Penn, the guy who took her from inevitable to impossible in 6 weeks.

From loaded with dollars and donors to no more donuts on the bus.

Mark Penn, the best friend Obama ever had.

Go Mark!!!

Hillary is one of the biggest whiners in the history of politics.  It's okay for her to say things not true about OBAMA, but when someone does the same to her they are totally out of bounds.  March 4 can't get here soon enough, BARACK has to seal the deal.  The only way to beat a bully is to knock them out and if you have to kick them while they are down to do that, then that is what you do.
That's my girl!!!!

whatch out Obama-mama she is going to come out swinging.
Is she kidding?   What in the hell should she be angry about......her own insiders giving her bad advice and spending her money like water.   OBAMA 08.
Sen. Clinton, haven't you also been promising change?  Pot, meet kettle...
I guess gracious is hard to do two days in a row.
Obama up to tricks--the media will just overlook it as they have everything else.  For some reason the Fourth Estate  wants Obama in the White House.  I remind they to be careful what you wish for.  Obama is the candidate that the media built and he has faced no discrimination compared to what the one white gal has faced and continues to face.  I pray that the vast majority of Americans will come to their senses and they could, if the biased media would stay out of it and give both candidates the same amount of coverage etc.  TO HILLARY;  YOU GO GIRL!!!!
Hillary may be right about Obama but she too is as phony as a $3 bill.  She's in a panic state and will say or do anything to avoid defeat.  Furthermore, if she cries again I'll throw up on my shoes.
it seems to be politics as usual for Barak Obama! It  is hypocritical to pretend to be above the fray by giving inspirational speeches about being a "uniter" of "all the people" and then going after Hiliary Clinton as if she is Darth Vader. Please don't tear down others in order to build youself up, Obama.
That is the politics you say you dismiss.
It's unnecessary for the Obama campaign to make such baseless claims at this point.  Obama supporters clearly aren't paying attention.  They jumped on his bandwagon based on eloquent oratory w/ precious little content, so detailed policy comparisons are irrelevant.  Those of us who struggled to find policy differences between these two moderate candidates were unable to find many, although he has the good fortune not to have been in the Senate when the war vote was taken (his voting record suggests that he is unlikely to have voted against it). If you were a voter who wasn't attracted to the rhetoric, then you probably preferred Hillary's obvious command of the policy details.  As a reader of many of these blogs, it was frustrating to see her constantly saddled w/ NAFTA baggage because the voters were unable to distinguish between President Clinton's policies and hers.  She has said repeatedly that she wanted to fix NAFTA and Obama has said the same.  The country is sailing on a sea of intoxicating demagoguery and reality no longer seems to be of interest to anyone.
Please publish my comment as it is directly related to the tactics used by Mr. Obama throughout the campaign. He, in the case I mentioned and also the case you cited has been disingenuous and it should be noted by you to portray a balanced view of his tactics. NBC is taking the role as judge here and exposing 'facts' so why not list the cited example of another fact offered by Mr Obama during the debate and his admission?
Why won't you do that? I have heard Chuck Todd offer his take on facts, performances and outcomes before. This is important to all people voting. Your station made this a national issue so why not publish the entire story?
You are the fact checkers? Or is that only where Mrs Clinton speaks..? I don't understand why you would not tell your readers. You are a news organization and that admission..however you portray it is news. That is a fact.
I never much cared for, nor trusted a desperate woman
Hillary is clearly on the defensive now.  Once she starts hurling the "shame on Obama", someone in her camp ought to have the humanity to tell her it's all over.

The Hillary campaign was always about her and not the people - that was her Achilles heel.

Nice attempt, Hillary.  Thanks.  See ya.
Can we please get rid of Hillary already
The gloves are really off! They say you never see the true character of a person until the chips are down. Hillary’s tone is a decided turn off and all this is going to do is further alienate voters from supporting her. There are ways to protest without becoming angry.  ‘He that angers you controls you’. This is most unfortunate. I was hoping to see an Obama/Clinton ticket but with her on the warpath this may have just been thrown through the window.
Come on.. You have to be kidding me!! I have never seen anyone go from warm to cold in a flash!! At one point, I supported Hiliary Clinton over Obama for President. If she would have been able to simply keep her cool and not turn into a raging hothead, maybe she wouldn't be in the predicament she is in now; on the edge of being finally knocked out of the race.. Obama 08!!
Don't bother...I didn't know Billary controlled this site.  I should have known because not a single comment has been  posted.   Can't be critical of Billary...can we? Go Obama (we don't censor).
Finally! Take him on on his hypocrisy! He talks all the time of the "politics of old", "the politics of destruction", and how he wants to rise above that and have "substantive" debate. Then he sends out mailers with misstatements, lies meant to mislead people about Sen. Clinton's positions. HE IS NOT THE CHANGE HE HAS BEEN WAITING FOR. Oh, and stay tuned for the re-emergence of TONY REZKO. Sen. Obama is a political pied piper, and he should be CALLED on it.

His wife had a major Freudian slip for the both of them when she said that she is JUST NOW proud of her country. What, only now that your HUSBAND might get the nomination? What kind of standard is that? For more on her narrow view of our country, please see her senior thesis.

Obama IS NOT the right guy for the nomination! Don't be mislead. Be careful of following the crowd... right off a cliff! Wake up America!!
