Obama defends his mailings

Obama vigorously defended two negative mailers dropped in Ohio that Hillary Clinton says came “straight out of Karl Rove’s playbook.”

The mailing, one on NAFTA and the other on health care, raised the ire of the New York senator, who forcefully pushed back against them at a press conference earlier today.

Saying that the mailers had been out for weeks, Obama suggested that Clinton’s fiery reply this morning may be a political stunt rather than a genuine reaction. “I am puzzled by the sudden change in tone. Unless these were just brought to her attention, it makes me think that there’s something tactical about her getting so exercised this morning."

He added: “And unlike some of the attacks that have been leveled about me that have been debunked by news organizations, these are accurate. Sen. Clinton, as part of the Clinton Administration, supported NAFTA. In her book, she called it one of the Administration’s successes. And we point that out in a state that has been devastated by trade and has been deeply concerned about the position of candidates on trade.”

Obama was pressed on his health-care mailer, which when it appeared weeks earlier had been compared to the Harry and Louise ads that scuttled Clinton’s attempt to pass universal health-care in 1993. The ad that Clinton held in her hand and emphatically gestured with during her press conference was the health-care mailer.

“I have seen the mailer and I completely dispute that characterization. There are many people who support Senator Clinton who support health-care mandates who didn’t like the characterization of it. But there wasn’t anything inaccurate in what was said,” Obama said.

He went on to say that there was nothing “factually inaccurate” about the mailer.

“What think Senator Clinton would argue is that she doesn’t like how the mandate is characterized, because she wants to characterize it as universal health care. Just like I don’t like her characterizing my plan as leaving 15 million people out. But there’s nothing in that mailing that is inaccurate. When she says she’s going to mandate health care, and her own experts have indicated this a mandate does not work unless you propose harsh stiff penalties on those who don’t purchase it and that’s what we point out in this mailer.”

The mailer in question, however, appears to be deceptive in that it quotes a college newspaper in its harshest attack on Clinton. The quote reads: “…forcing those who can’t afford it to buy health insurance…,” which leaves out the fact that Clinton’s plan, like Obama’s, has strong subsidies.

It's worth noting, though, that the Clinton campaign has also sent out mailers distorting Obama's positions. One used Obama’s “present” votes in the Illinois state legislature to claim that he is anti-choice, a false assertion. And another attacked Obama on Social Security, claiming that he would raise taxes on working families a “trillion dollars.”

Not the first time he has put mailers ut he don't tell truth.
OBAMA DO YA THING BABY!!!!!!!!!
Hillary, isn't Karma a wonderful thing?  What goes around comes around.

Just like her plagiarism charges... maybe she should buy stock in Xerox:

HILLARY CAN NOT HAVE IT BOTH WAYS.SHE STATE I WAS NOT IN THE SENATE WHEN NAFTA WAS PASSED.HILLARY BLAMES NAFTA ON BUSH 1 IS LAUGHABLE.BILL CLINTON PASSED NAFTA IN TO LAW.HILLARY WAS NOT IN THE SENATE WHEN SCHIP INSURANCE FOR 6 MILLION CHILDREN  WAS PASSED IN TO LAW IN 1997 BUT SHE DOES WANT TO CREDIT FOR THAT BILL!
This is just another typical stunt the Clintons are pulling. Somehow they think it's all right to compare Obama to Bush, but heavens to Betsy don't you criticize this precious woman. As the male part of Billary said after one of the earlier debates last year: "The boys were too rough on Hillary." Long live the double standard!
Mailers on NAFTA and health care were out before Super Tuesday.  And now into Ohio where NAFTA is a critical issue for blue collars, where the real Clinton position needs to be shown.  As for healthcare, all need to know that the Clinton position is a "mandate" which requires enforcement, even if by wage garnishment.  The voters of TX, OH, VT and RI should be informed as to the differences between HRC and BO, as Hillary continues to insist at the debates.  Doth she protest too much?  Hillary's outburst in Ohio today will not be kind for her, especially when contrasted with Barack's calm demeanor in response.
There is no way that this will be good for her candidacy coming on the heels of her debate performance. All it does is undermine her.

We could witness a total implosion by March 4th if she is not careful.
Yes, karma is a wonderful thing. I just didn't think the Clintons were ever going to feel its wrath. At least Obama hasn't wagged his finger at the television cameras and say "I did not have sex with that woman," unless by sex you mean sex.
In both his mailer and his response to Senator Clinton, Senator Obama attacks Clinton for her support of NAFTA.  In his response, he refers to her specifically "as part of the Clinton Administration."

I suppose if he is finally labeling her as part of the administration, instead of "just" being First Lady, and giving her blame for the administration's actions, he should give her at least partial credit for those balanced budgets, for those 22 million new jobs, for those eight years of peace and prosperity, for an end to ethnic cleansing in the Balkans.

How about it, Senator Obama?
Obama is a fool if he thinks people are going to believe his utter BS.  Talk to the Jesus who loves you bama we are sick to death of your rants! He talks unite and be good and play nice and do not dis me man I am the ONE!  We must be the shinning example of how a inexperienced nobody can be president.  Just say sorry for the drugs (I WAS LED ASTRAY) sorry that bad bought that lot for me, I HAD NO IDEA! POOR Bama is a babe in the woods!
I never get posted anymore but hey j merle you don't either. This is OBAMA country!

The Clinton campaign has a way of playing games with history. Both Clintons have given President Johnson credit for signing the 1964 Civil Rights Act, to dispute the relationship between accomplishments and inspirational speakers. What they failed to mention was that that Act was actually introduced by President Kennedy in 1963 after he was inspired by the leadership of Martin Luther King Jr., Fred Shuttlesworth and others here in Birmingham. It was President Kennedy's exceptional leadership qualities that allowed him to take what was, at that time, a bold initiative. Barack Obama has the same leadership qualities. He can lead as others can not.
wink wink---Hillary is so excercised---that female thing again. All good little obamanoids will rush screaming about that mean cruel Hillary defending herself against mr wonderful. This is one a$$ kissing obama site.

I don't agree with the Obama campaign's decision to send these mailers out, because they do appear to be negative, and go against what the spirit of the campaign is. But compared to the spurious attacks from Clinton, all I can say is "live by the sword, die by the sword." Obama's mailers are no where near as negative and untruthful as Clinton's have been. Clinton also does not do a good job of talking out of both sides of her mouth. In the debate, she said she was honored to be on the stage with Obama. Now she compares him to George W. Bush. Either she was lying about being honored by Obama, or she thinks Bush is honorable. I can't tell which perspective is the lie. Her campaign anymore is looking like a Janus, and if she's not careful, she may wind up looking like Medusa. At any rate, every move she makes now she ends up revealing her true character as that of a liar. So sad.
HIllary's flip-flop on NAFTA:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJ0swdRvYgw
She can dish it, but she can't take it.

For at least a month, Clinton has been telling people that Obama's Health care plan lives out 15 Million Americans. Clearly a "spin" which means "not quite wrong, but not quite right"

She is a master at old-school politics.  It's a simple 9 step execution:

Step 1: Cry foul...
Step 2: Come across angry...
Step 3: Claim despicable...
Step 4: Claim enough is enough...
Step 5: Assert the devil himself would not have...
Step 6: Pronounce shame on you...
Step 7: Suggest "not one of us"...
Step 8: You have been asking for it...
Step 9: Go Nuclear. (You are justified)

Works every time...  My cousin uses it to his wife every time she says "I know you were with your friends last night honey, but why do you smell like that.."

Brilliant... Oh it was nice how she dropped Edwards in..  That's a smooth spend...  I'll tell my cousin to add step 6.5, "Your mother always said you were..."  This adds the extra edge of making it seem like it's not just him.

Go Clinton, you need to bottle this stuff.

QUESTION FOR SENATOR CLINTON:
So is this how you plan deal with other elected officials, republicans, and world leaders?

All your experience have taught you how to mis-manage, go broke, cheat, blame, blame, blame... then puppy-dog. She is a natural..

PS
Clinton appears to be a little bi-polar if you ask me.  She switches moods like no one I've every seen.
Billy, that was a great post and so right on!! Obama took it easy on her in the beginning...but now she won't go away so he's going in for the kill. Her lies and deception to her supporters has been pointed out and she doesn't like it. To bad Hillary! Don't go away mad....just go away!
Obama is the last chance I’m giving the Democratic party because voting for Hillary is just not an option for me. If the Democrats are too stupid to choose the obviously better candidate, they have lost my vote for life.

Its time to Break the Bush/Clinton dynasty and get Obama in because I’m sure I’m not the only Democrat out there who’s ready to walk in Barack doesn’t make it

I’d almost rather see McCain get in then Hillary just so we’re not ruled by the same two families for 28 years in a row.
PLEASE CONCEDE, HILLARY CLINTON, AND LET THE HEALING BEGIN

HP Boston - there is a simple reason that you fail to get posted. . .you are an idiot.  Maybe you HAD NO IDEA, maybe you were LED ASTRAY, POOR HP in Boston, all stressed up and nowhere to go.

And contrary to the assertion, this is not OBAMA country, but it certainly is thinking country. . .thus, you don't get posted.
where there's smoke there's fire... on Hillary's hair. What a bunch of politically calculated bloviation this crap truly is. A wounded animal surely lashes out at anything it can, so just beware of rabies.
Hey guys at FR, could you please post the video of Barack's rebuttal that people saw?
Better watch out Barrack.  Hillary is going to send Bill and his wagging finger in your face--to tell you how dumb you are---and you have no right to contest Hillary  (ie Billary)
Oh please, playing the victim is such an obvious tactic that it just cannot be viewed as serious.

On NATA, you either get to claim the first Clinton era (good and bad) within your "years of experience" or you don't.  Which will it be?

Duh, "subsidies" and mandates are other words that mean money.  Somebody pays.  Who?  How?  Further, do you retain choice whether to pay into health insurance to pay or don't you?

I look forward to an HRC mailing that answers these very simple questions.
I was leaning to Obama. Not now. False, untrue, and he knows it. What is not false is that his health care plan will fail and cost everyone more because most will opt-out. It's a great Republican plan but has no business being offered by a Democrat. What is not false is that in the last debate he tried to claim as his own position what Hillary said a long time ago about negotiating with "those who disagree". Problem is, Obama, you ought to try that in your campaign instead of attacking those who. Or, maybe in a few days you will change your plan to be for everyone and say that you had the idea first. Obama, you talk sweet. Sweet talk is often untrue.
I think we have seen back to back 19 debates on these candidates, read as much as we can on these candidates.  watched MSNBC, CNN, Youtube. American people have seen these candidate in and out. These fliers on healthcare will not make any difference at this point. We all know both disagree on their healthcare policies. Mandat Universal healtcare for Clinton vs Affordable healcare cost for adults (but mandate healtcare plan for Kids) for Obama.

The only thing that scares me in Clinton's press conference is the tone.... The Texas debate is still fresh in our memories in the way she moved us at the end of the debate... the emotion, the goosebumps, the mother that seems to care about us.
And suddenly, the mood shift this morning... and the language content.

I think the only thing I can get from her comments is that she now knows the nomination is slipping away from her.

At the same time I don't appreciate Obama coming out to suggest that she should Quit. This is a fight. Mike Huckabee is still in the race on the other aisle

RobK, great video. Very enlightening. While on the subject of Hillary's double-talk, here's her on Iraq:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMgGORbd72w
All this is going to do is draw attention to the content of his assertions...As Russert pointed out on MTP, Hillary has blatantly flip-flopped on NAFTA, she'll pay for it now at the debate Tuesday when Russert is moderating.
What an act by her today, making this seem like new shocking news.  She is a shameless fake.
Fund Raising Fraud caught on tape:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMfUajhL24I
I find it very interesting that Hillary huffed and puffed, but never proved that the assertions in the Obama mailer were false.  Why?  It is because they are true.
I was supporting Obama until the last couple days, I have been reading way to much stuff about this guy and today just put the icing on the cake. He is no different than the rest I just know less about him.
HRC quoted Krugman(whose son supports her); Barack has Robert Reich and dozens of experts who agree with his plan. BTW, this back-and-forth has been going on since Iowa. Barack Obama has won more pledged delegates/more states/more popular votes/has more donors so far to tackle McBush .
AGAIN, PLS CONCEDE, HILLARY CLINTON.
Oh my gosh - I forgot Hillary was still in the race!
In light of today's events I have come to realize that Hillary Clinton is everything she says she is not.  How do you attack Obama on his healthcare plan and then scold him when he attacks you on yours.  There is a fundamental difference between the 2 - 1 is to mandate (senator clinton's) and one is to not (senator obama's) by definition mandate means to to put something basically into law which the law needs to be enforced so by mandating healthcare she will need to reprimend those who do not abid by the law.

There is nothing inaccurate about his mailer that simply points that out.

I think by making this an issue they way she did is only going to hurt her and show the american people that she is everything that he is not! hypocritical, and still playing the same old political game!
Hillary is a hypocrite.  I live in Cincinnati and an hour before seeing her act irate on TV I received a mailer from the Clinton campaign.  The mailer blasted Obama on NAFTA (he must have supported it as a community organizer in Chicago in 92-93) while totally misrepresenting her statements on NAFTA.  Her back is to the wall, the polls are moving in Obama's direction and this his her last gasp to stay alive in the race.  Hopefully my fellow Ohioans can see through her charade.
Clinton did support NAFTA. Her book; her words. Clinton's healthcare plan is to garnish wages.

"I think there are a number of mechanisms that are possible, including going after people’s wages, automatic enrollment.”

Her words.

As an independent, all i can say is Dems need to wake up. The Clinton, Pelosi, Reid failures need to end.
What a coward. No political fortitude. No spine.

She knew about the mailing and she was asked about it by George Staphanopoulos, but she didn't say it was inaccurate. Her internal polls must show that her lead has disappeared.

sorry, he does and says things and always has an excuse. and, the media is completely manipulating the situation. the buck never stop with Obama.  We have just witnessed a POTUS not taking any resposibility. They are the same. Barack is the Democrats version of Bush.
LOL at least she didn't call him a Nazi like her supporters did on the Harry and Louise styled mailer a couple weeks ago.

Oh I forgot, she just now saw these.

Hillary attacks Obama on the one hand while simultaneously telling a flat out lie that she just saw these things,

This is what happens when lying is second nature to your political chops.  (uh-- I thought it was a vote for inspectors)

How dare Obama attack her for universal healthcare when that is all she has done for weeks. LOL

Obama's plan is not universal if people choose not to take it when its a good deal.  What happens to Hillary care people is reflected in the mailer.  THe healtcare gestapo will get ya (or its not universal just like oBama's) or you will take the mandate with subsidies and like it.  You can argue subsidies but if you still can't afford it, the mailer is accurate.

This is already happening in MA so where's the beef?  Denying it is not honest Hillary.  But to call it Rove tactics is just silly.  If it's true ....it's true, the end.

THe fact that Obama understands why the mandate is DOA and cedes a liberty issue is good.

Let's mandate life insurance while we are at it.  (Didn't think so...but what about those children at risk of their irresponsible parents?)

Hillary will not get her mandates through congress in my opinion.  What does she think the mailer won't go out when the GOP fights it? DUH!!  Face it it's mandates and they will polarize and die.

Universally.

Sorry Hillary BWAAAAAA!!!

If she thinkls this will get her elected she is nuts.

Desperate housewife.

Clinton trying to have it both ways, cherry pick the good stuff from Bill and leave out the bad (NAFTA).

Hey... I grew up in Ohio & Michigan, drive through the small towns and you will see a depressing sight. NAFTA was a killer for those states.

Obama is right to point this out. What is worse is her response to trade treaties. "We'll re-evaluate"... I think the people in Ohio and Michigan want better.

She can come out hard when she is questioned, too bad that same passion is not there for the people of Ohio and Michigan.
Desperation tactics by the Clintons to rally their supporters for one last hurray. Never trust the Clintons.
All of this is a waste of effort for all.  Why does Obama need to place anything in print on Clinton.  Does he think the American People are not capable of doing there own research on Clinton's Health Care Program.  The fact that the mailers were placed by Obama before super Tuesday and now in Ohio is enough for me to say the "game" is just getting rotten.  The American People deserve better than dirty politics.  How about stepping up and showing some class.....
What an incredible acting job on the part of Hillary Clinton. To pull out a political flier from weeks ago and make it out to be some big deal as if he had claimed she was the illegitimate daughter of *** Nixon or something. What does the flier actually say- not much?

It’s not like he accused her of pimping her daughter in Wisconsin- which she did.

It’s not like he accused her brother of getting paid to get people pardoned by her husband- all of which happened.

It’s not like he blamed her and her husband, because she was at ever cabinet meeting, for selling out the working people of the United States through NAFTA and by offer most favored Nation status to China- which is exactly what they did. Out sourcing started under Clinton not Bush.

I have to say "the lady doth protest too much."

It is up to the forth estate to set the record straight if they have the guts to face the Clinton attack machine.
Ironic for Hillary Clinton to shame anyone. In order to shame someone you have to understand and appreciate what shame is. The Clinton’s are devoid of shame. Shame is not a part of their ethical, moral or cultural lexicon.

Attack! Attack! Distract! Distract! That is the Clinton strategy. As for Karl Rove- yeah he learned everything from them. It is time for change we don’t need these people to lead this country.

20 years of Clinton’s and Bush’s is enough. We've all had enough of this garbage.
Hillary is using this occasion to get publicity. She has run out out money and her days are short. A desperate move, indeed. I am worried about her future after the selection. She can not manage her campaign, can not control her temper, and can not communicate a consistent message that is her own. What can she do other than crying and venting and maybe panting in private?

Where she told Obama he should be
ashamed of himself for lying about her
health plan in his "Harry & Louise"

I have been pointing you guys for a month
to this and other Obama camp tactics, that
bear no relationship to his statement on

Well folks instead of being consumed with emotion because we support one candidate over another let's try to look at this situation in pragmatic terms.

Is this a NEW mailing just shot out after the debate? NO. Is this mailing in slanderous and in violation of Federal Laws which govern this types of campaign materials? NO

HRC claims 35 years of 'EXPERIENCE', therefore everyone get out your calculators and do the math, Was NAFTA enacted within the last 35 Years? OMG - YES!!! Was a Clinton involved in its being established?  DING  DING DING!!! Yes!

Then Rush out and get her book and read it to find out what her opinion was at the time... pause... She thought it was a POSITIVE part of HER husband’s administration. Since she was NOT an elected politician at the time, I guess she can now find fault with it and say she is going to fix it.

Now the fact is that take her vote as an elected official for the Iraq war, her change in stance on NAFTA and the poor management of her campaigns finances and GOSH for an EXPERIENCED politician she either is a slow learner or has poor judgment. These inconsistencies should make everyo9ne pause and think, what evidence is there that her Universal Health Care plan will be any better?

It is apparent that because there has been no missteps in the Obama campaign that she and her staff can latch on to, that DRAMA is needed in order to stay in the limelight as March 4th draws nearer.

Sadly she has to contend with the attention grabbing McCain situation and therefore her SUDDEN realization that this mailer was out there gave her a drama moment. If this suddenly came to her attention, given that the Ohio vote is forthcoming and she has an 'Experience' staff supporting her, what kinds of delay can we imagine would occur in her administration if she were elected? Something to think about.
How would Obama implement all his ideas is a big puzzle, with the country in debts and with current account and federal deficit and recession looming large. He is promising moon to everyone to gather votes and would leave them in lurch once he gets it. Look at the black state union that he is not attending since the black votes are not important to him any more. He now needs the latinos. He never ran a clean campaign, thats the BS thrown by the media. His supporters are blatantly shameless and even worse than the republican supporters.
HP Boston: Your rambling attacks of Obama and drugs shows you to be amongst the illiterate. Otherwise, you'd know your rants are sheer BS. You Hillary supporters are running scared....as you should be. You fear truth....and hide your heads in the sand. It's better to attack with lies than to admit failure. Give it a rest and watch closely how you're supposed to run a country with the love and admiration that Barack and Michelle Obama do. They are the epitome of what we need leading our country...not someone with a long history of corruption, scandal and betrayal. The Clinton's need to ride off into the sunset somewhere.....if they have any dignity left.
