Obama defends his mailings

Posted: Saturday, February 23, 2008 6:32 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan
Obama vigorously defended two negative mailers dropped in Ohio that Hillary Clinton says came “straight out of Karl Rove’s playbook.”

The mailing, one on NAFTA and the other on health care, raised the ire of the New York senator, who forcefully pushed back against them at a press conference earlier today.

Saying that the mailers had been out for weeks, Obama suggested that Clinton’s fiery reply this morning may be a political stunt rather than a genuine reaction. “I am puzzled by the sudden change in tone. Unless these were just brought to her attention, it makes me think that there’s something tactical about her getting so exercised this morning."

He added: “And unlike some of the attacks that have been leveled about me that have been debunked by news organizations, these are accurate. Sen. Clinton, as part of the Clinton Administration, supported NAFTA. In her book, she called it one of the Administration’s successes. And we point that out in a state that has been devastated by trade and has been deeply concerned about the position of candidates on trade.”

Obama was pressed on his health-care mailer, which when it appeared weeks earlier had been compared to the Harry and Louise ads that scuttled Clinton’s attempt to pass universal health-care in 1993. The ad that Clinton held in her hand and emphatically gestured with during her press conference was the health-care mailer.

“I have seen the mailer and I completely dispute that characterization. There are many people who support Senator Clinton who support health-care mandates who didn’t like the characterization of it. But there wasn’t anything inaccurate in what was said,” Obama said.

He went on to say that there was nothing “factually inaccurate” about the mailer.

“What think Senator Clinton would argue is that she doesn’t like how the mandate is characterized, because she wants to characterize it as universal health care. Just like I don’t like her characterizing my plan as leaving 15 million people out. But there’s nothing in that mailing that is inaccurate. When she says she’s going to mandate health care, and her own experts have indicated this a mandate does not work unless you propose harsh stiff penalties on those who don’t purchase it and that’s what we point out in this mailer.”

The mailer in question, however, appears to be deceptive in that it quotes a college newspaper in its harshest attack on Clinton. The quote reads: “…forcing those who can’t afford it to buy health insurance…,” which leaves out the fact that Clinton’s plan, like Obama’s, has strong subsidies.

It's worth noting, though, that the Clinton campaign has also sent out mailers distorting Obama's positions. One used Obama’s “present” votes in the Illinois state legislature to claim that he is anti-choice, a false assertion. And another attacked Obama on Social Security, claiming that he would raise taxes on working families a “trillion dollars.”

Umm, I may be bad at math, but aren't the 8 years of her husband's administration counted within the "35 years of experience" she claims to have?
Another cheap Hillary rhetoric..

The sooner she is knocked out , teh btter it is for the Party and the Country..
Either the mail outs were genuine or they were not. And the deception in them is either true or false. Please respond about both questions and RSVP
I agree with an earlier post. If he is going to connect her to the Clinton Administration and its foibles, then give her the props too.  I don't know about everyone else but my portfolio sure looked a lot better than it does now. And, I wasn't worried about how the next few generations are going to pay for all the debt we now have. And, we were spiraling into some abyss in terms of competition with other countries.  This guy is getting a little too full of himself. He has no reason to put out any "questionable" ads given his belief that he is winning. Oh wait, maybe he doesn't really believe he is winning and is starting to come to grips with the fact that he really can't walk on water and his worshipers may find out before June.
By the way, the Obama campaign is exactly right.  Her "anger" today IS tactical.  It's her excuse for going nuclear/scorched-earth in the next debate and on until March 4.

The trouble is, this is like a movie where you figure out the ending in the first five minutes.  Hillary, by now we all know that "Rosebud" is the sled.
This 'outrage' is manufactured. These are not new mailers, and the Clinton campaign has been well aware of them for a while. The mailer is factually correct.

Hillary Clinton supported NAFTA until she flip-flopped at the beginning of this campaign. Hillary Clinton supports a health care mandate that will penalize Americans who can't afford whatever deal is hammered out with the Health Insurance industry.

Hillary's campaign wants to have their cake and eat it too - they've tried to smear Obama (see: 'xerox' comment, lies about the 'present' votes in the IL legislature) to no avail, and this is just one of the last, dull arrows in a *very* desperate campaign's quiver - a thinly veiled attempt to mount an offensive going into the last democratic debate of the race.

The voters of Ohio and Texas will see through this sad, last gasp of a losing campaign on March 4th.
The reality on the healthcare proposals:

We ALREADY have universal health care.  It is just being run inefficiently and in a fiscally unsound manner.  Anyone who is sick can go to an emergency room and get care at an exorbitant price.  If they are not "covered" then the taxpayers pay anyway.

Fiscal conservatives should applaud any system that offers a low-cost option for health care as it will SAVE money, not COST money.

As a result of people using the ER has a primary care facility, ERs are going out of business and the health care system is being harmed.

Allowing either campaign to make the healthcare debate a key debate is silly.  Clinton is pushing it to scare people/create differentiation where this is little and Obama is pushing it because Clinton is pushing it.  Both effectively want the same thing.

Regardless, NO plan will matter unless it can be pushed through.  Clinton has tried and failed because the Clinton's have so much political baggage and several sworn enemies who will oppose ANYTHING they propose.  (sad, but true)

One or both of the following must happen for the slate of democratic plans(including healthcare) to succeed:  The democratic candidate must win and the congress must be democratic AND sufficiently so to assure passage of a bill over Republican objections.

The simple truth is that Obama has pulled millions of new voters into the system.  Those millions will vote democratic in their congressional races.  Obama leads in general election polls.  Clinton does not.

So, both of the required steps for achieving a healthcare plan (presidency, congress) are MORE likely with an Obama nomination.
What we're seeing from Hillary is either "kicks of a dying horse" or the case of "a drowning woman will clutch at a straw." Give it up momma
I've been reading these blogs with interest, and thus far I have been impressed by the vitriolic and ignorant statements made by what appear to be uneducated individuals. I say uneducated, because it seems they can't put a coherent thought together without calling names and being ugly.  I'm signing off.
Jake,

Running a positive campaign does not mean you won't highlight issues.  There wasn't a single ad hominem attack on HRC in those mailings. Just attacks on her POLICIES (which by the way not a single Hillary supporter can refute).  Dispute the contents of the mailings if you dare but to call it negative campaigning is quite desperate.
Who is the REAL Hillary?  This latest outburst is so one hundred eighty out from the candidate at Thursday's debate that it just boggles my mind.  It would appear that the person who appeared at the debate as concerned about America was not being genuine with the American people.  It seems now that it was an act of the first class order.  The attacks today, in my opinion, only reinforce the Hillary that we have seen hidden depending on the situation.  Angry, self-centered, manipulative, divisive and down-right nasty.  You can object to the mailings, but it should be done in a civilized  manner.  Although I do have to marvel at the fact that as of today they are an issue - they have been out for a couple weeks - is that because she is desperate because the end appears near for her candidacy?  Kudoes to Barack for handling this with a calm and resolute demeanor.
Very dissapointing to hear empty rethoric and a misleading and dishonest candidate fighting agaisnt Universal Health Care.

The second mailer from the Obama campaign mimics Harry and Louise ads that the health care industry used to scare people into opposing universal health care. The ad claims "Hillary's health care plan forces everyone to buy insurance, even if you can't afford it."

I might be a hard core Democrat, but I won't be able to vote for such a dishonest man.  He does say one thing and his Campaign is another.  I listen to a lot of african american firious people with lots of resetnment...I can only thing he uses the same tactics to get african americans to vote.

What a pitty to see this coming from my party.
Another desperate act from a vengeful vindictive woman who is getting her Butt handed to her by a the Rookie of the year
You go Obama!

Hillary wants to dish it out, but can't take it!

Her campaign has been negative from the start, and she needs to own up to support for NAFTA and the health care mandates.  It was only a matter of time before these two issues would blow up in her face.

Time for the Clinton's to go and bring a man with integrity.
CHECK THE FACTS:
NY Newsday (source of the quote )calls the Obama NAFTA mailer "misleading"

http://weblogs.newsday.com/news/local/longisland/politics/blog/2008/02/_the_democratic_campaign_has.html

FACTSCHECK.ORG a non=partisan website calls Obama's healthcare claims "misleading"

These are not organizations associated with Hillary.  They just tell the truth.

What a pitty to see this coming from my party.
I was reading a history book about Clinton presidency..
Bill Clinton was vigoursly promoting NAFTA...as per the book...
There was nothing said Hillary was trying to prevent it as first lady...

Obama has been distorting Hillary's voting record; her stance on various issues and her intentions for a very long time.  It is all documented on Hillary's facthub website.  It is time for Obama to stop preaching one way and behaving another.

My family and I are happy and relieved that Hillary is confronting Obama on his abject dishonesty.

Enough is enough.
Mexed, you are mistaken. Obama's position has always been to negotiate with those who disagree, Hillary and McCain take the same old line that sitting down with the Prez is such an honor that only those who already agree qualify. This fails to take into account that thanks to Dubya it's not such an honor anymore.
TELL THE TRUTH OBAMA.  YOU ALWAYS MISREPRESENT HILLARY ON HEALTHCARE AND ON NAFTA AND MANY OTHER ISSUES TOO.  WE ARE TIED OF YOUR LIES.  WE ARE TIRED OF IT.
35 years of experience is catching up to her.

What part of the definition of 'mandatory' doesn't she understand?  And since she refuses to come up with a response to how this mandatory requirement would be enforced, he has a real point. A blogger from MA on the Obama site noted that her boyfriend was a victim of this mandatory/Romney plan and just gets nailed for fines and fees but still can't afford the health care even though he wants it.The blogger's point was that it doesn't work. Only hurts people and generates revenue for government/insurance cos.?
Numerous sources, including her autobiography, can back up her (albeit not so passionate at the time) support of NAFTA, what comes around... Sen. Obama should go easy, because NAFTA and the like is reality
and Texas kinda likes it.
A lot of sour grapes in her rant..."big rallies", "speeches"...if her campaign were better managed and not broke, she could get her own mailings out. And yes, they are both Dems. but they are NOT on the same team. They are adversaries right now. Hardball, Lady.

Oh, and how does it feel to have "everything I said was factually accurate" (Bill about SC) turned around
on you!  At least this wasn't a racial smear.
So get over it. Aren't you the one who has been vetted, took the hits, has 35 years of political experience?
Hillary needs to remember  "Those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones".  That she has the NERVE to criticize Obama for fighting back!  He has let you get away with soooooo many lies in an attempt to run a civilized campaign, to throw a fit because he finally put out fliers telling people the facts you don't want them to hear - how is that unethical??

Will she cry again and to get votes if the tantrum of outrage doesn't work?  She embarrasses women everywhere.  Is this irrational behavior suppose to convince us she is presidential?
Senator Clinton has finally seen the light.  She cannot allow the lies being perpetrated by Senator Obama and his underhanded campaign team to go unchallenged.  I was proud of her today.  She is the real Democrat in this race.  She fights for the Democratic Party and for all Democrats across the country.

Hillary is about winning at all cost.  The more she speaks the more I dislike her.  Even if she somehow weasels her way to win the Democratic primary there is no way she can win the General Election.  Maybe the Democratic Party needs to learn the hardway.  Look at all the polls.  Obama would beat McCain who would beat Clinton.  I don't want to vote for McCain but I will unfortunately have to if Hillary wins the Democratic nomination.  It would be the first time in 20 years I voted Republican.

I believe the flyers are true.
Hillary said she would garnish wages, if necessary, to pay for health care.
Bill championed NAFTA and she supported it.
She's the one who should be ashamed...hissyfits are unpresidential.
If Hillary Clinton doesn't drop out now... there will be no Democratic Party as we know it in existence after next November. The former First Lady's attack politics... as shown today in her timely complaints about fliers that the Obama campaign is sending out have shown how disengenuous she really is. This type of campaigning, at best, disillusions millions of people who want to believe in an America ready to unite... not an America catering to the aspirations of one person...

Exhibit A) If Mrs. Clinton wins the nomination of the Democratic Party, she will not (and I say will not) win against McCain... current polls show this and he can pull the national security trump card on her... remember she voted for the War in Iraq, then went back on herself? Many Americans disagree with McCain that we should have a "100-year war," but many don't want someone who can't make up their mind on national security either.

Exhibit B) It is becoming increasingly clear that the only way Hillary can win the Democratic Party nomination for President is by hoping for a brokered convention... effectively disenfranchising every new voter who joined the Democratic Party for the first time this year because of Senator Obama. Not to mention it would most likely put her nomination at odds with the popular majority of Democrats. This means that the newest members of the Democratic Party, including myself, would become disillusioned with the party's form of choosing a nominee - not from the people but from the elite.
Hillary wants to take credit for the good things of the Clinton administration and claim to be experienced because of it. Fine, but her experience includes support for NAFTA while many of us Union people were working and demonstrating against it, and warning how it would lead to manufacturing jobs leaving this country. That's her experienced leadership too. Give her the credit deserved.
Here's an excerpt from a February 14, 2008 Huffington Post article by David Sirota:

Hillary Clinton has made statements unequivocally trumpeting NAFTA as the greatest thing since sliced bread. The Buffalo News reports that back in 1998, Clinton attended the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, and thanked praised corporations for mounting "a very effective business effort in the U.S. on behalf of NAFTA." Yes, you read that right: She traveled to Davos to thank corporate interests for their campaign ramming NAFTA through Congress.

On November 1, 1996, United Press International reported that on a trip to Brownsville, Texas, Clinton "touted the president's support for the North American Free Trade Agreement, saying it would reap widespread benefits in the region."

The Associated Press followed up the next day noting that Hillary Clinton touted the fact that "the president would continue to support economic growth in South Texas through initiatives such as the North American Free Trade Agreement."

In her memoir, Clinton wrote, "Senator Dole was genuinely interested in health care reform but wanted to run for president in 1996. He couldn't hand incumbent Bill Clinton any more legislative victories, particularly after Bill's successes on the budget, the Brady bill and NAFTA."

Yes, we are all expected to just forget that, so that Hillary Clinton's campaign can manufacture supposed "outrage" that anyone would say she supported NAFTA - all at a time her chief strategist, Mark Penn, simultaneously heads a firm that is right now pushing to expand NAFTA into South America.
Hillary you are truly the most manipulative and sleezy of all politicians. Everyone sees through your BS. Do the country a favor and drop your bid. Remember the flier she sent out in Wisconsin? "Barack, which one of these people doesn't deserve heathcare?" What goes around comes around. Since when does a couple extra years in the senate and being first lady make you "the most experienced candidate?" Lets not forget that this lady moved to the state of New York just to run for senate. She is an embarassment to this country.
I have no doubt that this is the way both candidates see each others policies.  And actually they are both right to some extent, but not totally.

The point drop earlier about the 9 point change is a good example of what Clinton is doing in order to gain some of the momentum back.  Obama does this as well but he is perceived a little more smooth at accomplishing the feat.  This is classic politics and no matter what politician you pick this applies.

The procedure is a way to help shift a point into your favor, but the participants have to be willing to accept, I dare say, change.

whwhwhwhat...i am blown away at how people can compare barack to bush.

these must be people who work for the clinton campaign. no sane person would think that way

The contents of the brouchures were not made up. The sources were nailed down and include HRC's own words.
If there were lies, that would be wrong and negative.

Frankly, I don't think the Obama campaign needed
to even send them out, but this was probably planned when she still had her 20+% point lead.
Good grief, doesn't her "shame on you Barack Obama"
sound just like her as the scold, the angry wife, the aggravated mother, the Catholic school nun?
I guess the kumbaya/New Hampshire moment at the end of the debate the other night is over, huh?
We need to get real, let me give Hilary credit for this line though it is not an original. She bashed Obama on Healthcare in the last debate and in her TV ads currently running. But Obama should not criticize a fellow Dem. on Healthcare Hilary now states. Obama is not being straight on her support of NAFTA and that is dirty tactics she claims. While her camp continues to mill up the ridiculous issue of plaigiarism on Obama. Clinton has paid speech writers and uses her husband's lines. What is up with all the double talk about dirty tactics and bad treatment. People who live in glass houses.......somebody else said it originally and it appiles to both Clinton and Obama. As Bill said....."Give me a break"....this is the silly season (Obama). Hilary......politics ain't beanbag (somebody said it first) so get over it and show some class.

God of ridiculous political thought

Hillary is done!  Obama has been a gentleman throughout this entire process.  If he had gone negative in New Hampshire, you'd be done.  Here's the amazing story, You and your husband had a chance at Health Care and failed.  You and your husband has a chance at trade and failed.  You and your husband can look at each other age as the country moves forward without the two of you!
The Clintons do not deserve any credit for the budget surpluses in the 1990s.  First of all, the surpluses he claimed to have in his budget proposals during the 1992 elections were completely fraudulent, reminiscent of Reagan's "voodoo economics."  Every independent study of them showed that to be the case, and Clinton himself as forced to admit it less than 2 weeks into office.

But the budgets surpluses in the 90's were the direct result of the booming 90's economy, which had absolutely nothing to with the Democratic administration at the time, the Republican administration that preceded it, or either party in Congress at any time.  The 90's economy was 100% the product of a technological revolution the likes of which we hadn't seen in 100 years.  The internet boom-- and nothing else-- gave us budges surpluses in the 90's.  The .com bust-- and nothing else-- brought them back down.  The Iraq war, of course, has since sent the deficit off the charts, but that's another story.

Hillary has been taking credit for everything that went right in the 90's regardless of whether she, her husband, or anyone else deserves credit for it, but she has avoided responsibility for anything and everything that went wrong.
Must be a slow news day.

Wasn't it a "scream" that put an end to Howard Dean's campaign.

Do we treat women who scream -- as "more experienced?"

Must be, we do.
If Obama is the nominee as Axelrod claims why send out these mailers? The boon statement has widely been discredited in the media. Why cannot Obama admit it? The reason for the new outrage is that they were sent out in Ohio. Shouldn´t that be obvious?

BTW The anti-abortion mailer was not from the Clinton campaign, but from a 527.
George Staphanopolos asked Mrs Clinton if people would not sign up for her healthcare plan what would happen? Mrs. Clinton said out of her mouth, thier wages would be garnished. Maybe she forgot.
Then, there was G.B Senior, then B.C then G.B junior, now Billary. Let's Get ready for J.B, followed by C.C who is already in training.

Yes, that is the state of our politics. Are we becoming a monarchy or are we witnessing the birth of the American Kingdom let by the 2 families?
Hillary Clinton was on board with NAFTA and I'm sure there are any number of video clips available showing her pointing to it as an accomplishment of the Clinton administration.

She also has said herself that her health care mandate might mean garnishing wages of those who don't comply. She has not gone into detail about just what average people could expect in the way of subsidies to make it affordable nor how her plan would address systemic causes of the high cost of our health care system.

Without ways to lower those costs dramatically, her plan will leave many of us avoiding health care as much as possible  because of the high out of pocket costs which, in turn leads to a system of expensive treatments and procedures after we've already become really sick instead of much less expensive routine health maintenance.

Hillary's sudden rage over either of these mailers, which hardly just turned up, is just another stab at a better strategy.  With all the pundits talking about how she seemed to be on the verge of a graceful exit after her gracious concluding statement at the close of the last debate, her campaign probably decided they needed to dispel that notion.

Overnight, she goes from being honored to appear on the same stage with Obama to outrage over mailings she surely knew about before the debate. Will it help?  Probably not. In fact the contrast between the calm collected Obama and the ranting Hillary hardly works to her advantage.  Especially since she throws plenty of mud herself, much of it not terribly fact based.
Drama Queen!
Well I'm rooting for Obama but if he doesn't win I'll be happy to vote for Hillary. Only a jackass would vote republican again.
Kas anyone notice that Barrack looks like Bob Marley (that is if Obama had a mustache and dreadlocks?)
Has anyone noticed how much Obama looks like Bob Marley (that is if Obama had dreadlocks and a mustache)???
Desperation is compelling Hillary to the latest  attacks, her internal polling are confirming Obama is eroding her lead in Ohio, Texas is already Obama's. Expect a bitchy debate next Tuesday.   She sure doesn't look cool when angry!!!!
I didn't know Hillary was a good actor. I think she will be fine even if she loses. With all this skils, she will have a good future in Hollywood.
