Ralph Nader announces presidential bid

Posted: Sunday, February 24, 2008 10:44 AM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray and NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan
On Meet the Press this morning, Ralph Nader -- who won 2.7% of the popular vote in 2000 and just 0.4% four years later -- announced that he will once again be running for president this year.

Yesterday, when asked about a potential Nader candidacy at his press conference, Obama said: "I think anybody has the right to vote for president if they file sufficient papers. And I think the job of the Democratic Party is to be so compelling that a few percentage of the vote going to another candidate's not going to make any difference."

When reporters reminded Obama that Nader had said some not-so nice things about him, Obama replied: "He had called me and I think reached out to my campaign. My sense is that Mr. Nader is somebody who if you're -- don't listen and adopt all of his policies, thinks you're not substantive. He seems to have a pretty high opinion of his own work. Now, and by the way, I have to say that historically, he is a singular figure in American politics and has done as much as just about anybody on behalf of consumers. So in many ways, he is a heroic figure and I don't mean to diminish him, but I do think there's a sense now that um, you know if somebody's not hewn to the Ralph Nader agenda then you, you must be lacking in some way."

Raplph Nader just wants attention and anyone that doubts Barack Obama's patriotism should read his book "The Audacity of Hope" I guess that explains why most of his supporters have an IQ of more than 2 digits. I agree Obama/Edwards 08
Interesting.  Obama says that Nader doesn't think you are substantive if you don't agree with him but Nader himself says that Obama has run a campaign of substance but censor's himself.

Nader would try to influence both candidates but clearly thinks Obama's is  more likely to listen.
Perhaps news of Nader's run should finally draw attention to our out-of-date electoral system, where the candidate with the most votes wins even if no one has a majority.  We could solve this problem by adopting instant runoff voting (IRV).  IRV is a simple and more fair way to vote:  First, you rank your choices in order of preference.  Then, the first choices are counted, and if someone gets a majority, they win; but if no candidate gets a majority, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated, and their supporters' votes count for their second choices instead.  IRV is so simple, common-sense, and democratic that both the major parties' front-runners, McCain and Obama, publicly support it.  You can learn more at:  www.fairvote.org.
With Ralph Nadar in the race, say goodbye to President Obama.
4 more years of Republicans.  Goodbye Obama!

The headline is that Nader announces his bid today, but the content is limited Obama's comments from YESTERDAY.  Outdated and off topic.  Thanks so much.  If anyone actually wants to know anything about this story look for video of today's (2/24) Meet The Press and/or go to votenader.org
Well, at least Senator McCain isn't the oldest candidate anymore.
To a of Illinois and all of the Obama supporters that don't know their political history.  When the general election consist of more than just a Republican and a Democratic candidate for President, it is a detriment to te Democrats and the Republicans win.

Moreover, Nader always get enough support to make a difference and this year hes is going to get more support than he ever has.

I will vote for McCain if Hillary does not get the nomination. I am too afraid of the unpatriotic and patronizing weasel that is Obama. He is the biggest fraud to hit this candidacy. His smugness and that of his awful wife are the reason I will jump party lines. I don't even want to risk voting for Nadar because I am too fearful of this extremist coming into power. God help us all if Obama is the winner. We could only hope then he will muzzle his darn wife.

i think everybody knows that a vote for nader is a vote for the trash can. you can see this by the dimishing returns of votes from 2000-2004.
at one time he was a good thing for the green party, but now he is such a joke the green party needs to ditch him. that is assumeing of course there is someone besides nader left in the party. why else would you trot the same loser out every election.
whatever, ralphie. you aren't going to take nary a vote from barack obama, so do your thing. maybe you'll give those folks who're holding their noses and backing mrs. clinton someone to vote for after she drops out of the race on march 5. but trust that obama's not fretting his entrance in the race one tiny bit. and neither are those of use who support him.
Ralph Nader has all the political relevance this year of a Gary Hart for President T shirt.
Well the truth is that Ralph also sent NH into Bush's column in 2000.  Those 4 electoral votes would have given Gore the election and made Florida and Katherine Harris, moot.  I guess one has to wonder how Ralph can rationalize all of the resulting pain of that November and December, as well as the horrendous, unintended consequences of the subsequent 7 years. With an electorate so split (it was obvious that this was to be a close election) and in an election in which he knew that he had no chance of winning, he still could have had the satisfaction of knowing that he had made his point, while throwing his support to Gore in that final week.  He would have come out of the entire process as a hero.  Instead, no matter his protest, he will be remembered as the ultimate spoiler in the history of American politics.

With all of that said, and with the admission that I am an Obamaphile of the first order (having drunk the Kool-Aid back in 2004, with it sustaining me ever since), I have to say that I agree with Gary Shear.  I doubt that this election is the same as 2000; this is not a 50/50 electorate.  Obama will either win big or be blown away (I predict and hope for the former but I could see a course of events that could lead to the latter).  I welcome Mr. Nader to the debate and have to admit that had Hillary gotten the nomination (still a remote possibility) I would have found a place for my vote in his candidacy; I see little difference between Hillary and McCain (I know, I’m a hypocrite…at least I’m an honest hypocrite; I find consistency can be stultifying and boring).  I only hope that if the election in November is perceived to be close, that Mr. Nader has the good sense this time to make the right difference and help to elect Obama.

If I wanted to announce for president, could I get the first eighteen minutes of Meet The Press???

Nader is a malcontent who is neither willing nor able to build a viable organization.  He shows up on national television, declares that it's not his fault Bush won in 2000, and asserts that he's the only one who can fix what ails the country.  Does anybody take this seriously anymore?  Zero credibility, zero accountability.  No thank you.
LOL Nader is a joke and will go by the wayside of Paul supporters.  People are hip to his republican funded strategy and it will not stop young voters and of who remember 2000 to stop him from throwing this election back to another warmonger republican.

For all the Hillbots go ahead and vote for Nader, the republicans welcome it. But trust, it will not stop Obama's momentum. It will make him and his new supporters motivated in stopping another Republican from the White House.  So stop crying and whining because Clinton is LOSING.

The one thing that Nader doesn't have is the CHANGE factor nor has he been relevant in 8 years.

GOBAMA 08
Nadar’s positions are not bad; however the reason he is running is more about ego than a concern for the American people.  He has caused irreparable harm to this country - just ask all those who've lost a loved one in Iraq, a war waged by a president who otherwise would not have been in power had Nadar put the country’s interests ahead of his own.  But even despite the tragedy that has come from his mistake he has not learned, he has not grown wise, and he is incapable of reading the tea leaves that indicate that the people of this nation are finally mobilized for change - change that does not involve Ralph Nadar, and therein lies the rub.  Ralph Nadar is a man who at the end of his career, at the end of his life, is desperate to leave his mark on the eternal wall of oblivion, even at the expense and disregard of so many.
I hope he can again count on Republican donors as he did in 2004.  Nadar would make a great VP for McCain.
Ralph Nader is nothing but a tired old man. This guy must be senile or something. I don't even know how he even got on meet the press. This man has had 18 months to jump in and give the world his opinions on what's wrong with the politics of today. I  wouldn't let him engage in any of the debates to Hillary or Barrack. It's like Hillary and Barrack have been running the mile race, and they are on their last lap and Nader decides to put his SKECTERS on and say I’m in the race now. This is crazy Dennis Kucinich had to take Nevada to Court to try and get into a debate in how the heck is this person feels that he deserves to be on the circuit this late in the game. Ralph Nader there is no demand for you if you felt that strong about running you should have put your hat in the ring 18 months ago. Please do us a favor, and go back to your little cave and don't come out. You have nothing at this point and time to offer the American people but more confusion. Everything that you talk about on meet the press you should have been saying 18 months ago. You have nothing to offer this country in these typs of OLD TIRED POLITICS.. ONE OF THE REASONS WHY THERE ISN'T AN INDEPENDENT PARTY  IS BECAUSE PEOPLE LIKE WHO ARN'T WILLING TO GO THE MILE... IF THE PEOPLE BELIEVED IN YOU!! YOU WOULD HAVE BEEN RECEIVING BIG DONATIONS FROM THE BEGINNING. YOU HAVEN'T YOU DIDN'T SO JUST GO HOME!!!!!!!

KENNY D
I am wondering why he never won if he is a consumer advocate? Is he a phony advocate?
Please see Ralp Nadar's decision to run for the presidency for what it is.  I knew that when it became clear that a black man or a woman would have a chance to become the president of the USA that a third party candidate would step in.  This is the back-up plan.  The conservatives want to conserve.  They want to keep everything the way it is, because they are the sole beneficiaries.  They do not want to give up control or the wealth.  They want to keep us peasants in our place along with the rest of the world.  They (conservatives) do not want everyone to be treated equally because it does not benefit them in any way.  This country is run by racists and sexists.  That is why the media from time to time highlight Hillary being heartless (uncaring mother figure) and Barack being arrogant (uppidy negro).  Don't let Nadar split our votes, yet allowing another republican to win the presidency.  That is exactly what will happen, because the chances of Nadar actually winning is slim to none.  We have to be smarter than that.  Put all personal feelings aside and look at the big picture please!
If we can't have Hillary...Go Ralph Nader!!! Obamamaniacs, go home...take your hypocritical, sanctimonious, pompous and arrogant Messiah and his anti-American wife with you! JUST SAY NO TO OBAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
republicans and democrats make me want to RALPH!
all those people blaming nader for gore's loss in 2000 should just wake up from that 8 year sleep of delusion they have been living in. the only person to blame for gore's loss is gore himself. he chose to avoid the issues of corporate power and universal health care. i am insulted every time someone assumes that those who voted for nader would have voted for gore. this idea is a fallacy of epic proportions. i voted for nader but would have never voted for gore. he lost the possibility of my vote even before he ever thought of running. his and tipper's creation of the senate hearings on obscenity in music and their involvement with the pmrc in the 80's insured that. i will never vote for anyone who promotes/promoted censorship in any fashion. any candidate who has ever supported that position, is one i cannot trust. and just to further the point, i voted in florida, the state everyone brings up when trying to blame nader.  anyways, as far as obama is concerned florida doesn't count. so maybe as far as florida is concerned obama doesn't count. when we needed someone to stand up at the dnc meeting that voted to strip florida and michigan of their delegates, neither hillary or obama uttered a peep. the only ones from the party of "count every vote" who stood up for us in these states were kucinich and gravel, both of whom refused to sign the pledge. where is the "change" obama speaks of? seems like the same old politics to me. if obama loses in november remember this moment of disenfranchisement as the moment where obama lost my vote and the vote of every other florida and michigan democrat that insists that their candidate be held accountable to them. obama, hillary, the dnc and the florida democratic party are the ones responsible for losing my vote in 2008, not ralph nader. nader merely provides the means to voice my discontent with our whole system and express my insistence that we have real and substantive change.
Pragmatically:

1.  Where will Nader get the enormous amount of money he will need to get himself on the ballot, and mount a substantive campaign?  The answer to that lies in who has the most to gain in a Nader third party effort--the very corporate interests he is attacking, as well as other decidedly Republican interests.

2.  Irrespective of the virtues of his policies, and even if by some miracle he won, how could Nader realistically get anything accomplished, without any party support or alliances in Congress, and with his hyper-abrasive personality?

From the Who via CSI:  "We won't get fooled again!"
Mr. Nader is a great man. But please, do not do ANYTHING that will help defeat Obama and elect McCain. And running will do that. What stupidity holds whether wearing a flag pin means ANYTHING? Any idiot can wear a flag pin. And those criticizing Mrs. Obama-were your ancestors victims of slavery, Jim Crow, fire-hoses, police dogs, the Klan, and other assorted idiots and shameful policy? Proud of EVERYTHING this country does, like torture and beat people senseless for possession of marijuana? Make the poor poorer? Wage wars of aggression and imperialism, killing women and children in the bargain? I'll be proud when Obama is President.
Conservatives are the REAL threat to deocracy, liberty and justice. Conservatism does not really refer to conserving in the real sense, but to blocking human progress. In the name of God -- a God who values peace, justice and compassion for all -- these people try to maintain their greed and intolerance. They should not belong to America but to a nation of intolerants because they are much more like Hitler's Nazi Party in that they pretend to be preaching the will of God but at the same time spreading hatred and intoelrance. True hypocrites who have no place in this modern world, or they must move in wit the Pakistanis in Sout Pakistian.
Nader would be better than Obama. More substance.
To Cathy, Upstate NY:

Ralph Nader will not win the presidency.  I am a Hillary supporter, but I am not willing to hand over this country to the republicans again!  You have completely fallen for the republican game because of your own selfish reasons.  As my girl Hillary put it, "You should be ashamed of yourself."  It is clear that Obama being in the White House would be far less devastating than McCain being in the White House.  Hillary and Obama almost completely agree on every issue.  McCain offers a great contrast.  Therefore, it is obvious that you are not a Hillary supporter because of her stance on this issues.  It must be for your own narrow-minded reasons.
Alonso, Hileah, FL - is McCain your idea of "real and substantive change"?  You aren't going to get Nader, so get over it.  Do not put a Republican in the White House for 4 more years.
Obama take your shuckin and jivin used car saleman rountine back to the Muslim nation that your father was born in.

Your hypocritical use of the Black people and younger voters in this country, and now the Latinos, for your political gain is disgraceful.

For all the Hillary haters out there, there are just as many Obama haters and they will do whatever it takes to see to it that Obama goes down.

See you in November!

Mr. Nader is a great man. But please, do not do ANYTHING that will help defeat Obama and elect McCain. And running will do that. What stupidity holds whether wearing a flag pin means ANYTHING? Who cares if Nader runs again? He isn't going to impact the race. After getting stuck with Bush because of Florida, there is no way people will make that mistake again.
Anyway, I welcome anyone over 70 who wants to get into the game at this point. Can you imagine the contrast that will be evident in a debate between Obama and these two?
I've been careful so far in letting myself get too excited about Obama. Mainly because I thought the Clintons were going to be way tougher than they were. At this point, I don't think there is any question who will win the Dem nomination and later the presidency. Obama has demonstrated planning, financing, management and political instincts that are far superior to anyone else out there.
GO NADER, YOU ARE THE TRUE PEOPOLE'S CANDIDATE.
I hear an embarrassing moment coming for Ralph. The younger votes he affected in 2000 see what supporting him cost their families and their lives. If he thinks he has their energy or their ear, he is very mistaken. Our world has changed, but he has not changed with it. His style reminds us of McCain, and the fact they've tried and failed for what will be the third time will create a rally around Obama the likes we've never seen. He just reinvigorated Obama's troops. This election will not be close. He just got the Dems to circle the wagon even tighter.
Spoil Me?  Hell, yes!  He gets my vote AGAIN.
As far as I'm concerned Nader is part of the status quo.  He waited to inject himself in the race at a critical time during the democratic primaries with the same talking points he has presented in the past.  Im not saying that he is irrelevant but he is doing more damaged than good.  Obama has infused the political vote like no other in past history and doubt very seriously if Ralph Nader 2% of voter will make a difference this time.  I was one of those 2% in the past but he can forget about my vote this round.  I voted for him to make a point and look where it has gotten America, 4 more years of Bush.  Go fo it Nader, Obama is not affraid to say he wants change in the government and apparently people believes him.
Nader; "Dissent is the mother of assent...."

Dictionary;  "DISSENT: Dissension, Dissidence, Discord, Discordance, Disagreement, Nonagreement, Diversity, Unconformity, Apostacy, Recantation, Protest, Contradiction, Noncompliance, Refusal......"

Yep, THIS IS (old moldy) Green Nader. Spoil everything
if you can.

Donr
Just like anyone else, Nader has the right to want to be the President. Other aspirants have to do enough to ensure that votes given to Nader does to impact their chances. I think the messsage is clear, he belong to the past, just like the clintons and the bushes. GO OBAMA'08
Mr.Nader is an iconic american who has only the best interests of all americans and not the corporate and elected political lifers that have minimized the importance of the american citizen when it comes to political choices. Two sizes do not fit all when the two major parties do not address all the issues needing attention for some decades now. The democrats did not complain when Ross Perot handed Clinton two victories by taking votes from Bush I.
Even Obama calls Mr. Nader an heroic figure.
Mr.Nader has done more good for our country as a public citizen and his record and accomplishments of over fifty years are proof positive. The promise of america is for citizens to particpate in their democracy and not to be told by political parties that they cannot participate. Ralph Nader represents the best of american democracy when he will step forward and welcome all the slings and arrows from those who would curtail his and our rights to participate. Ralph has never needed the popular approval to do the right thing. Good Luck Mr.Nader and Thank You.
Does not matter if Nader runs or not.  With Obama as the Dem nominee, The Republicans are a shoe in.
Why does the media not question how well he does in states with open primaries but loses in states with closed primaries.  It is obvious that Republicans are voting for Obama because they know he will be blown away in November.  Once again the country is being screwed over by the News Media.
The problem with everyone who supports Obama is that they see electing a President of the United States in terms of Democrats v. Republicans and the D Party v. R Party.

When electing anyone to the highest office in our country, it should be on the terms of who is the most qaulified person to hold that office, not whether he or she is a Republican or Democrat.

And the Obama supporters keep insisting that Hillary Clinton is tearing the Democratic party apart.  No, the Democratic party with all of its ignorance and arrogance is what is tearing the party apart.

Go Nader!

Down with Obama.
I really don't know if Nader cost Gore the election but I would like to thank him if he did. The only thing worse for America than George Bush would have been Al Gore. As for Nader running I will replace my selection of "None of the above" now with his name. Although a lifelong Republican I can't vote for an Idiot- or a fake (Obama) so Nader you have my vote. DPR-Texas
I would definitely like to see another candidate for President besides the poor choices we have now, but I'm not sure Mr. Nader is the one. I just checked his website votenader.org and found that the biggest issue hurting Americans at home, ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION, is not even on his 12 Issues That Matter Most in 2008 list. Illegal imigration should be a number one Priority, right up there with the Iraq war. I am looking for an anti-amnesty Presidential candidate, he'd get my vote!

hey bob jones of racistville, this is a post about ralph nader and his rank stupidity, NOT a spot for obama bashers. (is there any intelligent life in birmingham at all?) I lived there for 12 years and i never saw it. But Nader might do well there amongst the crazy, stupid people who fear change and imaginary "terrorists" while their city turns into a crime-infested crap hole. people say obama doesn't have enough experience, but nader does? other than spoiling elections as often as possible and some consumer affairs work in the 80s what exactly does nader have experience in? he is sucking satan's (the republicans) pecker!!!! and if you vote for him, so are you.
Now is the time for BLOOMBERG to jump in so we do not have to vote for McCain..............1 2 3 JUMP!
I for one care not who the hell is elected. I have to write in Hillary and IF that is my only option, so be it.
Mary,common sense:
YOU are the one with no common sense if you think your Messiah is capable of running our country. I am very much in Hillary's corner, because of her experience and ability to lead, two qualities I do NOT see in Saint Obama. He may be your "Chosen One", but I CHOOSE to believe that Obama AND his wife are fake, phony USERS with their own racial agenda, and I would NEVER trust them in the White House! You can call it narrow-minded, Mary, but I happen to believe that I am OPEN-MINDED enough to realize that this election trancends party lines. The hypocrisy of the Obama cult of zealots and Obama himself, has been unmatched by anything I've ever seen in politics, even worse than the GOP! I will vote for Nader OR McCain before I put my country in the hands of a virtual unknown that the media is afraid of questioning, because Obama cries "racism" whenever they try. At this point in time, I'm embarrassed to even call myself a democrat, due to the vicious behavior of all the ObamaManiacs who are ready to go over a cliff for their televangelist of a candidate. When will Obama ACTUALLY answer any relevant questions???
Mary, Common sense (Sent Sunday, February 24, 2008 1:55 PM)
Good post Mary. I am an Obama supporter but have absolutely no problems with voting for Senator Clinton should she win the nomination. I cringe at the over confidence of many of my fellow Obama supporters. Anything can happen in an election, especially this election. But the way I see it there is no choice for any thinking realistic person but to vote for the Democratic nominee. All democrats should be smiling widely at our prospects and the quality of our candidates. NO democrats should be saying anything so bad enough about the other candidate that they can't take back and come out 110% for the nominee. That is what Obama would want if he loses and that is what Hillary would want if she loses.

Democrat '08
Now is the time for BLOOMBERG to jump in so we do not have to vote for McCain..............1 2 3 JUMP!
I for one care not who the hell is elected. I have to write in Hillary and IF that is my only option, so be it.
Ralph Nader's time has long passed.  But he is like so many egomaniacs who don't, won't, can't exit the stage.
