Huckabee gets the joke on SNL

From NBC/NJ's Matthew E. Berger
NEW YORK -- Huckabee showed once again that he gets the joke, appearing on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” to explain why he hasn’t conceded the Republican nomination to McCain and outstaying his welcome.

Huckabee appeared on the “Weekend Update” segment of the show, which made its return after a prolonged absence because of the strike by the Writers Guild of America. He chatted with anchor Seth Myers about the “mathematical impossibility” that he could win.

“The media loves to throw around the term ‘mathematical impossibility,’ but no one can ever explain what that means to me,” he said, eliciting an explanation from Myers that even if Huckabee won every remaining delegate, he would be 200 short.

“Wow,” Huckabee said. “That was an excellent explanation, but I’m afraid that you overlooked the all-important superdelegates, don’t forget about them,” he said. Superdelegates are only in the Democratic primaries, Myers reminded him.

“Uh oh, that’s not good news,” Huckabee said. “You know Seth, I was counting on those superdelegates.”

But the real joke came when Huckabee’s segment drew to a close. “Mike Huckabee does not overstay his welcome,” he said, referring to his candidacy. “When it’s time to go, I’ll know. And I’ll exit out with class and grace.” But after two rounds of applause, he was still there, smiling and waving. It took a gentle reminder from Myers to get him off stage.

Huckabee has appeared on The Colbert Report and other political satire shows in recent weeks, finding humor in his continued participation in the Republican race. He joins a long list of politicians who have appeared on “SNL,” including McCain and former Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani, both of whom were guest hosts. And Obama made an appearance last fall.

Huckabee arrived in New York Saturday and taped “Geraldo At Large” before arriving at NBC Studios in the evening for rehearsals, accompanied by his wife, Janet and daughter, Sarah.

As tradition dictates, Huckabee returned at the end of the show, to be thanked by guest host Tina Fey. After the show ended, he told NBC/National Journal that the experience was “a blast.”

“It was one of the coolest things I’ve ever got to do,” he said.

Huckabee said he had first been in touch with executive producer Lorne Michaels and head writer Seth Myers last week, batting around ideas. Huckabee said he suggested the idea that perhaps his time as a presidential candidate had passed. Huckabee and his staff attended the after party Saturday night, adding to their sleep deprivation.

With months of political material to choose from, “Saturday Night Live” opened by poking fun at the media’s fascination with Obama, satiring a CNN debate with anchors gushing over Obama and allowing “Obama Girl” to sing his praises in lieu of a question. Many had wondered whether the show would hire someone new to play Obama, because the show’s only black character is stocky Kenan Thompson. In the end, they opted for veteran Fred Armisen, who is white.

I watched SNL and it was so funny,  I thought Huck was staying just for fun, I didnt know they actually was expecting him to leave the show, it looked like part of the show to me.  Now I guess he willo have to debate Nader, right
Huckabee has guts---good for him.The opening of SNL was right on last night.Funny but so truthful---journalists infatuated with Obama and despise Hillary.Waiting for Matthews to be outed with his thrill up his leg remark Campbell Brown you are so busted.
Chuck Todd did not look well on MTP. Pink eye? Anyway, hope he feels better.
How can you not love this guy? He is the only republican who has any chance whatsoever of beating Obama.

Interestingly enough I can't find any posts on this or any other news channel on the opening skit of SNL, which basically criticized the medias bias reporting of Obama.

Can't say I am surprised at this.
Way to go Mike!
I'm an Iowa Democrat (who caucused for Obama).  In August last year I drove two hours to Ames to vote for Huckabee in the Republican straw poll.  (Their only rule was that you had to be from Iowa.)
Anyhow, the two dimensional media portrait of the Governor is unfair.  He's not the Bible thumping fire and brimstone conservative ala Pat Robertson.  He's the genuine article compassionate conservative.
Last July Lance Armstrong held a cancer forum and invited all candidates from both parties.  Huckabee stole the show.
I wonder if Republicans will regret not giving him a second look.
Fred did good. He's got the ears down pat. He's working on the voice. Bet he has it nailed in two shows.
Tina Fey editorialized for Hillary but then that would keep her buddy Amy Poller busy for four more years.
Great show. Glad it's back!
Since the NY Times ran a wonderful eight year old story on John McCain will they follow suit on Barack Obama?
We were treated to the Obama Girl, will we now be treated to the Obama Man - Larry Sinclair?
Bill O'Reilly alluded to Sinclair last week. Fact, fiction or muckracking?  It is better to know now in view of Obama's admitted cocaine use!
Mike Huckabee is a born natural at making people laugh and feel good about themselves.Micheal Jordon, Lebron James and Mike Huckabee all fall in the category of world class champions. All are blessed with raw natural talents. All of them can excel at anything they put their mind to. These men are Rockstars and Celebrities. People who the American public really admire and respect. If Mike Huckabee is elected President of the United States he would lead this country up with pure excitement and honor. A new American spirit would be born, a call to victory and teamwork would excite this generation for years to come.

Watch the video, Huckabee is great:

Huckleberry is a JOKE!
Hey Mr Berger, it's called satire - duh. That's why he kept sitting there, it was part of the joke. I thought Tina Fey's riff on Hillary was downright insulting to Hillary, I am an Obama supporter all the way, but, especially in her new "Shame on You Barack Obama" tactic, Tina's comments were really stupid. I hope she didnt think she was supporting Hillary, because that was insulting.
Campaign Diaries just came out with its latest House ratings, with a detailed analysis of every vulnerable House race (and there are many!). THere are good news for both parties: http://www.campaigndiaries.com/houserankings
Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. Imagine having a guy as president who's not uptight but still has the strength to remain strong on his beliefs! He may not be a "messiah" as Obama tries to be, but I don't want a "messiah" for president. I want someone who loves his freedom to believe whatever he wants spiritually, and actually fights for my freedom. I want someone who can laugh at himself while at the same time still knows why he's doing what he's doing. (he laughs on SNL while knowing full-well that he'll cause a wonderful brokered convention that will end the feeling of deadness in the GOP and quite possibly garner the nomination too.)
I want a man who says what he means, and does what he says, when the tides flow his way and when they don't.
He's solid.
South Carolina may have been Huckabee's Alamo, but Texas WILL be his San Jacinto!!!! All those who prize freedom, vote Huckabee!
This is the first article I've read that even mentions the opening segment. I was laughing so hard I thought I'd wake up my family! I'm just happy to see the media bias recognized by someone other than bloggers.
Did you see that Tina Fey had a whole segment about why to vote for Hillary?

And I was so amused by the segment where they made fun of the media for being so biased in their involvement in the campaign. I hope they got the point - it wasn;t subtle!
Ummm, The whole Mike not leaving the show was a part of the skit. DUH! Mike said he would leave with grace, and then didn't. It was part of the skit. Some people don't get Jokes.
I think Tina Fey is stuck in the 90's too.
Yeah that opening skit also pointed out that Hillary's "base" is white women over 80. The humor cut both ways, funny how Hillary supporters now see SNL as pro Hillary.
I don't see SNL as pro-Hillary, I see Tina Fey as pro-Hillary. Didn't see much of anything that was pro-Obama.

Huck, what do you really stand for? Conservatism? Liberty? Hypocrisy?
You know, your conservative gang resemble the National Socialist Party of Germany during Hitler's time. I am not attacking, just expressing my observation. You know that insane (he had rocks in his head instead of a functioning brain) Hilter hated communists and socialists, but he showed his hypocrisy by using the term "socialist" only bcause he wanted workers' sympathy.
The same can be said of American conservatives in that they try to advocate and advance their ideologies in the name of God. Please, God is not about ideologies -- he is no hypocrite, no intolerant, and no hate monger!
I watched all I could stand of the SNL opener, after all the hype about who would play Obama. As it turned out, the whole thing was a dud, whether you were for Obama or Hillary or none of the above! It wasn't very funny, but SNL hasn't been all that funny for years now. Where is the incisive, political satire of yore? Now, it's mainly snore! All that comes through is the effort to be funny, & it ain't working! Maybe they should do a riff on McCain's overuse of Reagan's "My friends", among other things. We need humor, especially after 7 years of Bush Junior. Anyone think "Lil' Bush" was very funny?
I realize that this has nothing to do with SNL so please don't attack me, but I didn't know where else to post this question.  First Read:  Please address the fact that MSNBC cancelled the Texas Republican debate that was scheduled for Feb. 28th.  I was really looking forward to Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul making John McCain look like a fool and this has just been quietly cancelled with no information as if no one was supposed to have noticed that it ever existed.  I suspect George Bush ordered this.  Yes?
I guess they had no choice because this debate was on CNN but what I have noticed is that CNN leans Clinton. The opening was very funny but would have been even more pointed had it been an MSNBC debate as MSNBC seems to lean Obama. Oh well they are sure to have fun next saturday night with this tuesdays debate. I'll bet Sedakis could do a hell of an Olberman.

Obama '08
I don't always enjoy SNL. But if you really want to entertain yourself and have a good laughter, maybe the GOP can nominate a clown. I just don't want the humor of the yore to resurface and intimidate me into voting.
Have you seen or noticed the "Obama Girl"? I thought it is kinda silly.
the guy playing obama played an excellent role---the snobby nose in the air accepting the adulation the journalists gave him---it is his due afterall.Acting like it is such an waste of his time to debate afterall he has the election in the bag,he would rather be out giving his pretty good speeches to his adoring fans.It is time for some humor
No one is talking about the opening skit on snl but how right on the money it was.  Obama Huseein is against Israel, refuses to wear the american flag, chooses not to put his hand on his heart during the national anthem.  he was brought up as a muslim as his father and grandparents are.  Once a muslim always a muslim.  He is all talk and the only reason he is doing well is because all of the White media has made sure we know that they are not racists.  (they sure are sexist though).  I am a Hillary supporter and I know plenty of people that would never vote for Obama if Hillary does not get the nom.  we will be forced to have a republican for another 4 years.  The republicans will rip this guy and his racist wife to shreds.  How can we have a first lady that is not proud of our country.  Wake up people.
Giant:

Huckabee is a natural at making people feel good about themselves by disparaging and ridiculing groups that those same people might be inclined to dislike. He does not have a way of making the groups he ridicules feel good about themselves.

I have never thought highly of people who attempt to elevate themselves by putting others down.

Fortunately, the groups he ridicules tend not to subscribe to the belief that others are responsible for making them feel good about themselves.
Tina Fey's pandering for HRC during update was disgraceful.  The beauty of SNL is that it is the prototypical equal-opportunity offender -- making fun of everyone on both sides of the aisle.  Her shameless endorsement of Hillary made me sick and her touting of having Bill and Hillary as co-presidents made me remember why I so desperately want Obama to end the Bush-Clinton-Clinton-Bush-Bush era forever.

We don't need Juan McCain and Vickigate. We need a man of character like Mike Huckabee.

Obama suddenly has said he opposes NAFTA however will not repeal it.

All Obama is trying to do is create a wedge amongst voters in Ohio vs. Texas. He is after the Latin American vote, he knows he will not get Ohio, so he is trying to wedge Texas. Latin Americans want more connections with NAFTA countries, hence he is pushing this wedge.

Obama is the most strategic waffler ever to be in the political arena. The media if its truely fair, needs to clearly point this out to Latin American voters in Texas and in the Ohio that he is doing this only for Latin American Texan votes.
What I don't get is after all the hype, that's the best Obama impression they can come up with??  My God it was pitiful.

Kind of a funny sketch, but the horrible Obama imprssion killed it.  You sir, are no Billy Crystal.
It was part of the joke! Geeze.

You give the media far to much credit and underestimate voters by about the same amount. I don't believe that voters stare dully at their TV screens and wait to be told who to vote for. If Hillary would have won the last 11 primaries/caucus and was the front runner then the story would be different. MSM would be reporting it and you would be praising MSM for it's cautious objectivity. Hillary's mistake was applying to be the new George Bush...only smarter.
The opening segment not not very funny but made the valid observation about how deep "in the tank" For Obama most journalists have become.  When will SNL do a segment about how deep "in the tank" for Democrats and not just Obama most media find themselves?

Gov Huckabee was great!
I am no commedian, but even I could have come up with funnier stuff than was presented on SNL last night.  C'mon, Seth!  You can do SO much better!  With all the political happenings since the strike began, why not go all political, or at least extend the news segment to re-cap the highlights?  There were two things worth watching in last night's show: the Huckabee bit and Amy's portrayal of HRC in the opening.  She's got her nailed!  Too bad the powers-that-be over at SNL allowed Tina Fey to stump for HRC as part of the show.  It was very disappointing, as the whole (albeit, limited) season of SNL has been.  Really, guys -- we waited all this time and that was all you could come up with?
I'll vote for Obama (happily!) but dang I like Huckabee.
SNL definitely needs a better impressionist to do Obama; Fred just wasn't believable. He isn't that talented anyway.

If I were casting an actor to do Obama, I would try and get Tim Meadows. At least they resemble each other and Tim has quite a lot of talent.
Kevin,
This is Richard Anderson. I think you are purely ignorant and biased. I cannot even prove your arguments that Obama cannot wear the flag and is against Israel. You are either a bigoted conservative or someone lacking the neveres to do research.
Please wake up and do your research before you rant nonsense. Go here http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/muslim.asp
Once a Muslim, always a Muslim...
That is the song of a hatemonger. Look, if you study Greek civilization, Christianity did not even exist then. In fact, Judaism is not the oldest world religion -- it is Hinduism. Look that people in Pakistian and other areas of Asia were never Muslims until Islam spread and conquered. And look how Christianity broke up into various sects.
Now, you bigot, Kevin, you think a religion is in your blood? Evolved in your body?
I just don't understand your twisted logic, buddy.
The first skit was making fun of the media more than anything, but it did get it's dig into Hillary about her demographic being 80 yr old women. I was unsure if Tina Fey's tirade was also supposed to be ironic. Calling her the bword and saying that is an attribute could not have been serious, right?
Huck get a life,. You are not going to be president, You are just the same a Ralph Nader THe reusable candidate and a spoiler.Spoilers take votes from viable candidates and install cadidates who are bad leaders. You have alot to whine about but offer no real solutions. You Guys that are in love with Huck have not informed youselfs of what he is all about.
Dont take it from me find out for yourselves.
Mr. Huckabee is comfortable doing comedy.  He is not as comfortable talking about foreign policy, doing math or taking responsibility for his past policies and actions (see college tuition for illegals, pardoning a record-breaking number of felons, taking $70,000 of state-owned furniture when he left the state house)  I would prefer a serious statesman to Huckleberry.  Alas, I'm not sure McCain falls in to the statesmen category.  Obama sounds good--kind of like cotton candy tastes.
Huckabee is a funny guy.  I wouldn't mind 8 years with him as president. Even if we don't agree with his policies, he'd make us laugh. Good job on SNL.
I am a life long Democrat, but I am tired of hearing the talking heads on every TV channel and radio station saying Huckabee needs to quit. How would you like to go to vote and have only one name on the ballot? When people vote for him, instead of McCain, they are letting McCain know there are people that don't believe what he does and want something else. They probably know Huckabee doesn't have a chance, but they want their voice heard in the Republican party.Often it is asked why third teir candidates run, and stay in the race. They raise issues that maybe the top candidates don't talk about but should and their being there makes them. Mike, stay in the race until the end.We need your voice and humor.
There are tons of great reviews about Mike Huckabee all over the news. I barely read any rave reviews (or even lukewarm reviews) about McCain on these blogs.

Huckabee supporters are fired up about him. Huckabee is really connecting with the American citizens. Whereas McCain supporters are not fired up about McCain at all, they are just casting their vote for him because the establishment bosses told them to do so. They have no excitement about their candidate.

McCain is going to get thumped on in the general election against Obama. The Republican party establishment didnt learn their lesson when they got thumped on in the 2006 House & Senate election campaigning on the theme of "My way or the Highway" attitude that John McCain is delivering.

Unless Ohio and Texas voters come to the rescue and vote for Huckabee a dynamic charasmatic leader, than the Republican party is doomed forever. Mike Huckabee has the charisma to go one on one with Obama in the Ring.

Wake up Republican party bosses!! you are about to bring down the Republican party platform with your greedy pride to rule over others. You would rather show your power than share your power.

Huck is the man! The GOP is too stupid to figure it out. McCain, you wouldn't stand a chance "my friend" in a one on one debate against Huck.

He has proven that he is the real deal, because he's human. He can take a joke, even when he is the butt of it. He makes more sense on the economy than anyone running, Republican or Demorat. His policies are clear cut and direct. Plus he has more experience actually running a government than anyone running.

This guy will broker the convention so that all the schmucks that voted for Romney, McCain and Paul can right their wrong and put a real leader in the White House.

I voted early in TX and voted for Huckabee. I encourage all of my fellow Texans and the good people of Ohio and the remainder of the nation with an opportunity to vote for a real and proven leader - Mike Huckabee.
I love Huckabee & I hope that he's our next President!

On another not, I'm pretty sure that him not leaving the stage was part of the skit.  I'm amazed that the media didn't pick up on that, or chose to spin it so people think he's an idiot.

Don't you think they've been practicing the skit all week?!?!
Huckabee has the guts and courage to appear in public and still maintain his cool. Very few people have that courage to face the public with dignity. The way he handled himself deserves much praise. I am big fan of Huckabee, primarily because he is articulate and has tremendous vocabulary to improptu answer the questions in most balanced way.
His presence at SNL shows that besides being articulate he has a great sense of humor in the face of absolute debacle and that's what US needs in times when the large population is paranoid. America has missed this great opportunity to elect a Statesman who is balanced, erudite and articulate.

Sudarshan Kurwadkar
I really like Huckabee - he's smart and funny but sticks by his beliefs.  Not a waffler, by any means...
