Huckabee gets the joke on SNL

Posted: Sunday, February 24, 2008 10:56 AM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Matthew E. Berger
NEW YORK -- Huckabee showed once again that he gets the joke, appearing on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” to explain why he hasn’t conceded the Republican nomination to McCain and outstaying his welcome.

Huckabee appeared on the “Weekend Update” segment of the show, which made its return after a prolonged absence because of the strike by the Writers Guild of America. He chatted with anchor Seth Myers about the “mathematical impossibility” that he could win.

“The media loves to throw around the term ‘mathematical impossibility,’ but no one can ever explain what that means to me,” he said, eliciting an explanation from Myers that even if Huckabee won every remaining delegate, he would be 200 short.

“Wow,” Huckabee said. “That was an excellent explanation, but I’m afraid that you overlooked the all-important superdelegates, don’t forget about them,” he said. Superdelegates are only in the Democratic primaries, Myers reminded him.

“Uh oh, that’s not good news,” Huckabee said. “You know Seth, I was counting on those superdelegates.”

But the real joke came when Huckabee’s segment drew to a close. “Mike Huckabee does not overstay his welcome,” he said, referring to his candidacy. “When it’s time to go, I’ll know. And I’ll exit out with class and grace.” But after two rounds of applause, he was still there, smiling and waving. It took a gentle reminder from Myers to get him off stage.

Huckabee has appeared on The Colbert Report and other political satire shows in recent weeks, finding humor in his continued participation in the Republican race. He joins a long list of politicians who have appeared on “SNL,” including McCain and former Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani, both of whom were guest hosts. And Obama made an appearance last fall.

Huckabee arrived in New York Saturday and taped “Geraldo At Large” before arriving at NBC Studios in the evening for rehearsals, accompanied by his wife, Janet and daughter, Sarah.

As tradition dictates, Huckabee returned at the end of the show, to be thanked by guest host Tina Fey. After the show ended, he told NBC/National Journal that the experience was “a blast.”

“It was one of the coolest things I’ve ever got to do,” he said.

Huckabee said he had first been in touch with executive producer Lorne Michaels and head writer Seth Myers last week, batting around ideas. Huckabee said he suggested the idea that perhaps his time as a presidential candidate had passed. Huckabee and his staff attended the after party Saturday night, adding to their sleep deprivation.

With months of political material to choose from, “Saturday Night Live” opened by poking fun at the media’s fascination with Obama, satiring a CNN debate with anchors gushing over Obama and allowing “Obama Girl” to sing his praises in lieu of a question. Many had wondered whether the show would hire someone new to play Obama, because the show’s only black character is stocky Kenan Thompson. In the end, they opted for veteran Fred Armisen, who is white.

Hey Chuck - why no separate posting about the SNL debate skit and Weekend Update that hit the nail on the head about the Hillary bias in the media, so evident at your own network?
Mike charmed us all once again proving just how self confident he is that he can poke fun at himself and Americans are seeing more and more what they will be missing if we don't get this man the Presidency.  Wouldn't it be great to have a President with a personality and sense of humor as well as a brilliant mind with great ideas for taking the country up to a better place.  Of all the candidates running, I believe that Huckabee is one that everyone would actually like whether they agree 100% with certain issues.  He is genuine, a strong leader, tough when he needs to be and tender when he needs to be.  You know what you get with him...100% the real deal.  If we dont' get this man in the White House, America is the loser, certainly not Mike Huckabee.
Katie from Des Moines,
Right on! Vote Huckabee! I really admire someone who openly admits his/her beliefs and stands by them instead of someone who plays the unity card and doesn't take a stand on anything...
And the fact that Governor Huckabee appeared on SNL further demonstrates his sense of humor and wit...I'm glad that he doesn't take himself so seriously that he can't laugh at himself. And a legalistic,Bible-thumping,hard-nosed conservative wouldn't appear on SNL at all...well done Governor Huckabee!
I missed SNL last nite; completely forgot about it. So thanks for the briefing. Huckabee is a riot. I really loved him on Colbert. Go Huckabee, WIN Texas (and Ohio too!).

Great stuff from Huckabee. Glad to see someone who does not take themselves seriously.

I was considering voting for McCain with the delegates being what they are, but I am voting for Mike in Texas.  Not because of the skit of course, but I really like the fair tax. We need to do something about this dang tax system we have.  Keep it up Mike.
Mike Huckabee is what we need to revitalize this country. He knows how to work hard and get the important things done like lowering taxes, improving education and roads. He will protect our national sovereignty and strengthen our military. And He also knows we have to have fun too. He knows we need to have creativity, imagination & ingenuity. Hang in there Mike, we need you! Texas, Ohio, Vermont, & Rhode Island we are counting on you to send this message! VOTE HUCKABEE!!
Unbelievable!  MSNBC is so Obama-biased it can't even run it's own NBC networks opposing view on SNL..the hilarious clip of Tina Fey and her cohort..or the opening skit that showed up MSNBC's obvious choice in this Primary...not a word on any of the news shows either...HuffPost also removed their link to the YouTube clip from their website...afraid everyone will catch on before it's too late?
Yes, Gov. Huckabee was great on SNL. He was very funny, and used satire as a way of making hia point, that he will not be pushed aside until the race for a nominee is over. That is evidenced by the fact that he is going to Rhode Island, Ohio, Texas, and probably Vermont before March 4. He is willing to fight to give all voters a chance to have a say in who will be the republican nominee, and it was plain to see that he loved being on SNL. Go Gov. Huckabee!
SNL was hilarious!  Mike Huckabee has perfect comedic timing and delivery. It's refreshing to see a candidate who's not so "full of himself", not hauling his ego around in a Mack truck with his entourage.

I've noticed that there is a small minority of folks who insist that he is a "hate monger."  I challenge them to find even one incidence of him speaking hatefully of anyone, even his rivals.  As always, the ones who accuse Huckabee of hating are the ones who are actually intolerant and hateful themselves -- such as calling him a Nazi and saying he's like Hitler.  Huckabee genuinely cares about people from ALL walks of life.  Ask some of the Katrina victims that he persaonlly helped.

And he is authentically pro-life, caring not just about innocent babies in the womb, but for people at every state of their lives.... unlike Obama, who voted against the Born Alive Infants Protection Act.  What kind of monster would allow helpless, abortion-survivor babies to just lie on a table and die?
Mike Huckabee has a unique combination of light-hearted humor and deeply serious insight into what America needs now.  He would make a spectacular President if the media would give him an even break.
Andrew: I've watched many of Huckabee's speeches over the last year and haven't heard him ridicule anyone except Osama bin Laden and the IRS.  Maybe you mean he has BEEN ridiculed by party insiders who are afraid of an independent thinker.
The most subtle of jokes about media bias by the first new SNL for a long time was the fact that they didn't even mention Ron Paul. Wow, can they read the media or what. Maybe they should have a sketch on media bias and reported misquotes saying Paul has dropped out of the race, haha;) They could get Jimmie Vaughn to play that night like he did for Paul at UT last Saturday afternoon. Another idea is a sketch about McCain and his new FEC problems, maybe Johnny Mac will meet the real "Mack the Knife".

Peace.
huckabee is a funny man with a good plan,I think he would make an incredible president. humility will take a person far. people can trust someone who is willing to admit when they make a bad judgement call or mistake of some sort. we feel safe with someone who can see their own flaws because they can correct their direction when their plan is just not working. arrogant people just plow through no matter what negative outcome their decision cause.
its amazing that america gives the senate and congress horrible approval rating, but are ready to vote for a senator for president. It shows how stupid we americans are. Don't blame anybody america for washington mess. look at yourself. Oh, yeah, Mike Huckabee rocks
As said: duh, part of joke...and part of his appeal.

Huckabee turns self-effacing humor into an art form. And because of this, he continuously remains visible in spite of his impossible bid in this election cycle. Though I strongly disagree with many of Huckabee's policy positions, I still admire his winsome wit and tenacity. Other politicians could learn much on grace under fire from Huckabee's example. Irreverence of oneself is both disarming and sexy!
Obama, hangs out with racists and anti-semites. I do not want this guys running our country. I am a Dem but Its sad this guy will win the nomination.  Mayor Bloomberg, jump in. Nader did...
someone compared Mike Huckabee to Hitler. You gotta be kidding. You don't know this man very well then.Mike is a man who has principles, lives by them but never forces them on anyone. You can't win.If he had an affair, did something illegal or his campaign was less than above board it'd be all over the place and ppl would be pointing fingers. So Mike has princples and ppl point fingers.
Mike Huckabee is one of the nicest most pleasant candidates out there. He's intelligent(if you take the time to listen to him)articulate and understands our country and its history better than ppl give him credit for.He wasn't elected a gov of Ark for two (10yr)terms because he was some kind of Hitler. He was also voted one of the top 5 Gov in the U.S.No Hitler there. To call Gov Huckabee some kind of Hitler is just nonsense.Gotta do your homework to know the man.
MIke didn't come from privilege, money or political ambitions. He came from a family a lot like yours and mine.We couldn't have a better man for President.
Is he flawless? Of course not.But does he have what counts? Absolutely. He's a breathe of fresh air of REAL change!
I thought the Huckabee skit was good. That was the only one I watched basically.

I changed from the Democrat party after being a registered democrat for the last 21 years, so I could vote for Huckabee in the primaries here. I like his fair tax support, and think it is the best economic stimulus for our failing economy.
Dear Giant,

"Huckabee is a natural at making people feel good about themselves by disparaging and ridiculing groups that those same people might be inclined to dislike. He does not have a way of making the groups he ridicules feel good about themselves."

It is the bible and the God behind it you have a problem with, not the man. The way God has created things they were GOOD. When people started to mess with the basics of life, and change things according to their corrupted desirers, God has left them.  Whenever people listen to someone else instead of the Creator, they will end up turning everything upside down. It is our responsibility to tell apart good from evil.  And yes those categories do apply to sexual behaviors too. The supernatural evil connects to people through their desires. He wants to rule the center of their personality by putting those desires in charge over their heart on soul. It does not mean people crossing the lines God has set up are all evil, but certain desires and acts do root straight back to the supernatural evil. It is the responsibility of those, who knows God to tell people that God has a very strong opinion about their desires and the direction they are heading to.  It is the true manifestation of love, when someone conflicts with people and tries to convince them to stop from turning their lives into an eternal disaster.

The problem is that some people only hear what they want to.  God’s message is not that how bad and sinful WE ALL are! His message is that even though this is true, he still LOVES US so much that he rather wanted His Own Son to DIE than any of us. See, THERE IS a SOLUTION! But, you have to do your part too by accepting it, and using mercy to make your life heading towards God, not away from Him. GOD is truly holy, without faults. If you choose acts which have sin in their center to lead your life on Earth, it will separate you from God not just here in Earth, but you will become irreversibly separated the moment you die. In eternity there is no mixing good and bad.  If you choose heading towards God while you are here, he will make His presence permanent in You after your leaving Earth, and will also cut out sin completely from You. If you are heading away from Him, you will lose everything that is actually good in You, and will spend the eternity experiencing only the bad, you have chosen. Expect it to be truly bad, not some sort of eternal party.

When you accuse people telling You, the same thing God is telling You, and you still call them evil, then it is God who you declare to be Evil.

I noticed all the press on about Huck's appearance on SNL. Strange that the large cable news media groups are not talking about the opening sketch that makes fun of the media's positive treatment and obession with Obama and that he can do no wrong. Strange isn't it...
