Obama continues NAFTA criticism

Posted: Sunday, February 24, 2008 2:28 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan
LORAINE, OHIO -- At a press conference here today, Obama claimed that Hillary Clinton had to take responsibility for the passage of NAFTA, because "she has essentially presented herself as co-president during the Clinton years."

Asked why Obama was attacking Clinton on NAFTA when neither candidate held an elected office to influence the passage of that legislation, Obama fired back saying that the "premise" of Clinton's candidacy "has been 35 years of experience, including eight years in the White House."

He argued that Clinton takes credit for "every good thing that happened" and said that it allowed her to be attacked on the bad as well.

"The notion that you can selectively pick what you take credit for and then run away from what isn't politically convenient that doesn't make sense. If she suggested she had nothing to do with economic policy in the Clinton White House, then it would not be fair for me to bring it up but as you know, that's not the claim that she is making," Obama said.

NAFTA has turned into a political hot potato as Clinton and Obama stump in Ohio, where the loss of manufacturing jobs has devastated the local economy. Obama has repeatedly attacked Clinton on NAFTA in recent days, as he tries to cut into her lead in the polls here.

At the National Gypsum Plant in Loraine, Obama held a small town hall where workers had a chance to ask questions. Over and over again, the issue of NAFTA was raised with one worker openly criticizing Clinton and President Clinton for the bill which he said "devastated" lives in this part of the country.

At a press conference yesterday, Clinton challenged Obama to "meet me in Ohio" at the MSNBC debate on Tuesday, after harshly criticizing him for sending out a mailer that misquoted her saying that NAFTA was a "boon" to the economy.

Obama claimed that he was "looking forward to the debate," but he said that he doubted that little new would come from the discussion. He reminded reporters and those present that this would be the 20th time the two candidates have debated each other.

"We have a difference on NAFTA. And that's what my mailer said, and I just read her words, her quotes about NAFTA. So the notion that somehow I was misleading on that issue is not factually accurate," Obama said about a possible issue that would be raised at the debate.

Obama, for the first time, clarified his wife's comments from several days ago, when she came under criticism for saying that this was the first time she was "proud" of her country.

"I think she already clarified this, she was very clear about it. She simply misspoke. Because what she was referring to is this was the first time she'd been proud of politics in America. And that's true for a lot of folks who had been cynical and disenchanted. She spoke about how she'd been cynical American politics, for a very long time but she's proud of how people are participating and involved in ways they haven't for a very long time," he said.

He argued that Republicans wouldn't be able to use an argument that he's not patriotic enough against him because people have already tried to do so, and it has not worked. He also dismissed Ralph Nader's entry into the race, and Nader's criticisms that Obama was too conciliatory to corporate interests.

Workers at the plant questioned Obama on whether NAFTA could be repealed, and he said that it could not though he wants to renegotiate parts of it to include better labor and environmental protections. He said that it when to came to trade, he believed in it deeply but that "the rules of the road have to be fair to everybody."

He argued that if trade agreements do not contain better worker and environmental and safety protections, the country would start seeing protectionist rhetoric not just from Democrats but also from Republicans.

"So what I'm trying to do is, you know, not strangling the goose that lays the golden egg.  The benefits of trade apply to everybody and the burdens apply to everybody instead of just you know making some people very wealthy and a lot of people hurting," he said.

WE need  to bring home the jobs.

Go Obama
The truth is, the NAFTA Agreement was signed by Bill Clinton on Sept. 14 1993.
Sen. Clinton has always touted her 35years of experience and this includes her years in the White House. This is Hillary Clinton’s voting record on the NAFTA issue.
1) She voted yes to free trade agreement with Oman, Ref. United States - Oman Free Trade Agreement: Bill S.3569: Vote number 2006-190 on June 29, 2006.
2) She voted yes on establishing Free Trade Agreement between US and Singapore. Ref.: US-Singapore Free Trade Agreement Implementation Act. Bill S.1417/HR 2739: Vote number 2003-318 on Jul. 31 2003.
3) She voted yes on establishing Free Trade between the US and Chile. Ref. US-Chile Free Trade Agreement Implementation. Act. Bill S. 1416/HR 2738. Vote number 2003-319 on July 31 2003.
4) Voted yes on granting normal trade relations status to Vietnam. Ref: Bill HJRES51: Vote number 2001-291 on October 3, 2001.
5)She also voted for open trade with China, despite China's substantial human rights violations and evidence to show that NAFTA has caused the loss of millions of US jobs to non-industrial countries and hasn't delivered on the promise of widespread prosperity.
Sen. Clinton speaks about NAFTA saying that she never supported it from day one. The truth is in her voting record. Don't believe what anyone says, just look it up, use the internet to see her voting record on NAFTA. You think Americans cannot search for your voting records, "Sen. Hillary Clinton Shame on you"

Obama is going way over the top on this. How can he himself say that he made positive remarks about Kerry´s vote for the war at the 2004 Dem convention to polite, but Hillary cannot public state her dislike of Nafta not to hurt her husband?
Hillary has no clue what she is talking about. As far as I am concerned her statement that:

"states like “President Bush’s state, Texas” were “embarrassed by the scores, so they just made the tests easier.”
The stupid woman just insulted every child and teacher in TEXAS, a state that she dearly needs to win. She is freaking pathetic.

I am a teacher in Texas, and I will be posting her statement in every employee lounge on campus.

Finally someone questions her on this 35 years of experience facade. You have to take the good with the bad. You can't claim the surplus and job creation and then run away from NAFTA.
GO BARACK OBAMA!

CLINTON IS DESPERATE AND GRASPING FOR STRAWS!

THE TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE!

BARACK OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT!
Obama is dead on. Hillary wants credit for the Clinton Administration for all the good stuff. But doesn't want to take the hits for the bad stuff that went on.

Hillary is a joke if I've ever seen one.
Wheres the blog on Ralph Nader?  Stop suppressing free speech.
Although getting rid of NAFTA may not be possible, I hope an Obama presidency will in fact fix NAFTA, possibly through the labor and environmental clauses of the treaty.  I believe Senator Obama has stated that trade deals, including NAFTA, will be re-examined with those considerations in mind.  We don’t have to indefinitely live with treats that are not in our best interest,  At the same time we need to be counted on to honor our treaties.

When it comes to labor and trade the Obama camp may have improvements to do, which is a far cry from the Clinton legacy in this area.  Why should we believe them this time around when they abandoned many of the promises they made the first time around and joined in the Gingrich assault on the working people of this Country?

Saying you are not linked or owned by corporate interests and actually being free is the difference between Obama and Ralph Nader
To All Africa American Obama Supporters:

If you are like me, Black in America, then you are feeling duped as well.  I know the State of the Black Union...Sold Out!

NAFTA!!!  What is really a bad trade deal is how Barack Obama can trade in his color of skin any time that he wants...one day he's white, the next day he's black depending on whose vote he's going for.

What he did was just to ignore and take the black man's vote for granted when he ignored the black man in New Orleans.

Well, this is one black man's vote that you will not be getting from this point on!
Hillary has been an outspoken supporter of NAFTA until she started running for president.  She then decided to change her message to gain the support of unions.

She's been dishing out negative ads from the start towards Obama, and this particular ad has been out for some time.  Suddenly she is shocked at this mailer?  I thought she had a strong ground campaign around the state!

Hillary, if you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen.

Hillary has been two faced for so many years rather than admitting her support was wrong and had hurt american labor.  She still won't even say she made a mistake voting for the Iraq war.

Is it just me or did she look like the wicked witch of the north yesterday?  I don't want my president looking like that facing adversity.

Transparency is the key in this election, and no one is more transparent than Obama.
Obama is SUCH a double-talking hypocrite! He has voted in favor of Nafta HIMSELF! What a dishonest weasel he is. His unpatriotic wife is not even proud of America, UNLESS her husband is getting votes, and her senior thesis AND all of her comments since then have shown her to be anti-white, to say the least. Why does the Obama church pledge to AFRICA, NOT AMERICA??? Doesn't anyone else see a problem here? They are so caught up in becoming "The First Black Family" in the White House, (with a separate wing for Oprah), that they will do and say ANYTHING to get there. They don't care who they destroy in the process. Obama is a lying hypocrite, and he must be stopped...vote Nader OR McCain and STOP THE OBAMA CULT MADNESS!!! Save Our Country.......

I originally posted this as a comment to Obama defends Mailings. It has not appeared. I am, therefore reposting it here:

I thought that Barack had now finally ascertained who he was running against ----- Bill or Hill? --- yes Hill rather than Billary.

No such luck. NOW the question has resurfaced --- is it Hill or Hill? ---- which Hill?

Is it the person of the final debate remark this past Thursday?  Is it the screamer, screecher, badass, weeks-old-pamphlet toting mudslinger ----- "Meet me in Ohio," she threatens.  You go girl, mash him up next Tuesday!! {YEAH, RIGHT.}

Very large variances make averages meaningless.  Yes, no one's temperament can be represented by, say, a horizontal straight line.  However, the ever-changing roller coaster rides of HRC takes one, metaphorically, from the mountain top of Everest to the closest man (or woman) has come to the centre of the earth. Who is it, really, with the feet planted solidly on the surface of Mother Earth?  Do we know? Can we know?
Why is it so hard to believe that Hillary Clinton might have opposed NAFTA but kept it between herself and Bill because of loyalty or their personal political deal or whatever? I'm sure they disagreed on other issues too. A marriage is essentially a co-presidency. That's exactly what you could expect a loyal spouse or co-president to do - show unity on the outside while crying on the inside. Al Gore stood with Bill as long as he could and nobody blames him. You can't blame Hillary for standing by Bill as long as she has, either, but who knows how it's REALLY affected her?  I wonder what happens now that their contract appears to be running out.
DOES HE KNOW WHAT NAFTA REALLY MEANS?
DOES HE KNOW WHAT NAFTA REALLY MEANS?
It is really amusing how Hillary's supporters and others call Obama a hypocrite. Their definition of hypocrisy is that if you are truthful with your criticism, you are a hypocrite (but if yo are attacking back when you are attacked with facts, you are not a hypocrite; in other words, if you lie and at the same time try to mask facts when someone attacks with these factual details about you, you are not a hypocrite).
The only thing that I thought Obama needs to be careful is the use of the "boon" term because I cannot find any article or any other fact checking site to back up that claim -- that Hillary said the NAFTA is a "boon". But it is not a lie for his campaign to use that term because it was not their own word but the word of the newspaper that used it in describing Hillary's position -- shifting poson -- on trade and the NAFTA.
The fact is, Hillary did initially support the NAFTA and other trade laws, yet she tried to associate John Edwards with the NAFTA and the China permanent trade agreement. What I can say is that she is merely cherry picking in that she tries to hide or block facts about her actions past and present that should have been known to voters so they don't regret voting for her. We need all the facts on all candidates if we were to elect a president who must uphold our laws and the integrity of the White House.
P.S. Ted Strickland of Ohio is a shameless man -- he called Obama's mailers "false" (or maybe he meant to point out to the "boon" term used in the mailer, but it still does not make the details false). This is a die-hard supporter waiting t see if he can be rewarded with the vice presidency as part of Hillary's "spoils system".
NAFTA was a bad idea from the beginning. Remember the Ross Perot charts? :) He was right. Interesting that the Clinton's went on to have major Asian business ties afterwards. Comapnies taking jobs away from us. Shhe has publicly made comments of praise regarding NAFTA, and then flip-flopped on it...just like the war & everything else.

www.barackstar08.com Very hip Obama shirts
Hillary running away from NAFTA is like what she's done with the Florida and Michigan results.  She was fine with the Democratic party ruling not to count the delegates up front, but once it was to her advantage, she claimed these as legitimate victories.  She wants to use super delegates to overturn the will of the people.  She counts her time as first lady as  part of her 35 years of experience, but she only wants to selectively count the good things out of her husband's presidency, and not have the bad things count.  I hope Ohio and Texas don't fall for this nonsense.

Regarding trade - stop shopping at Walmart if you want to stop supporting free trade.
Show your support! Wear your vote. http://barackstar08.com
"Obama will work with the leaders of Canada and Mexico to fix NAFTA so that it works for American workers." That is a straight cut and paste from Obama's website.

"What happened to NAFTA I think was we inherited an agreement that we didn’t get everything we should have got out of it in my opinion. I think the NAFTA agreement was flawed. The problem is we have to go back and figure out how we are going to fix that." - This is a straight cut and paste from 2000 from Hillary Clinton's website.

Can one of the Obama supporters out there explain what the difference between the two quotes is?  I want to hear something substantive.  Not her husband's administration passed it into law.  Her quote is 8 years old and I believe based on how she saw NAFTA played out.  Here is my problem:  I am a Democrat.  I hear Obama say no more politics as usual.  Then he goes out and pulls something like this.  Unfortunately, the only thing he has convinced me to do is sit home in November if he is the nominee.
BTW,
I HEARD HILLARY SAY THAT NAFTA NEEDED SOME CHANGES BECAUSE IT HAD NOT WORKED AS IT SHOULD HAVE, A LONG TIME BEFORE OBAMA CAME OUT WITH A XEROX COPY OF HER PLANS.
IF HE HAS TO FACE THE REPUBLICAN PROPAGANDA MACHINE AND COME UP WITH IDEAS ON HIS OWN,  WHOSE HE GONNA CALL?  HILLARY?

it about time somebody made this connection to clinton if she is going to cliam whitehouse experiance she has to take the bad with the good or not at all. after all i remeber the clinton years not once did hillary ever come out againest her husband. if he supported it she suportted it. i would like to see how the hillblazers spin this one
Obama has messianic message and NO SUBSTANCE.
Even his Step Grandma in Kenya is cashing in
on his fame and NOT GIVING INTERVIEWS unless
she gets MONEY FOR THEM...now that is real LOW
CLASS .....Leave it to the KENYANS to pull a
stunt like that
Somebody needs to ask Clinton about India and TaTa...It was intersting in her tirade yesterday that she didn't really offer a opinion on NAFTA.
He can't have it both ways, either. His campaign doesn't want to give her any credit for the good things done by the Clinton administration but want to blame her for the things that didn't work out. What a hypocrit. He IS washington as usual. Just as much as any of them running. The difference is the others aren't trying to pretend they're something different. What a hypocrit.
And you continue the MEDIA / OBAMA ticket!
oh the Obamas true colors are coming out. If its one thing that can slow down Obama is his big mouth wife.
There are many sore spots when it comes to the Clintons and their past sordid affairs. It does not surprise me that she's reacted like a raging lunatic. You can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can't fool ALL of the people all of the time. I pray that all the things she's desperately tried to sweep under the carpet, conceal from the American People, are all exposed. Vote Consciously in 2008 ... Vote for Peace and Prosperity.
What also needs to be reported and discussed is the fact that NAFTA has been a major cause of massive upheaval in rural Mexico resulting in even more people (an estimated 2 million since 1995) being forced to look for work elsewhere and that includes coming to the US.  It will only get worse since the limited tafiff protection against the importation of US government subsidized corn has ended and the Mexican market could soon be flooded by these imports causing even more displacement of the family farmer in Mexico.  This has far-reaching effects on both sides of the border.
(1) Hillary Clinton is not a bad person. She is not a bad senator. She simply was unable to handle the news that she had no entitlement to be nominated for president. Some of her actions, as a result, were simply wrong. The ultimate question for Hillary is whether she will destroy her political future by continuing to attack her party's choice for president.
(2) As far as Barack Obama, he will be just fine. We can be assured by a simple truth. A lie is not a threat to the truth. The truth is a threat to a lie.
This shows how shallow Obama is and how not ready. Hillary says she got experience while in the White House but she never said she ran it.Her being First Lady Gave her outlets to work on health care, womens rights, and civil rights not only in this country but many more. Trying to use this she is open to any thing I want to say about her just shows how little he understands. On the other hand he has an arragant attitude no one had better question me. This could be a sampleing of bad judgement,i believe, for the person runing country and protecting us. Other leaders will laugh at him.
You reap what you sow (senator Clinton)supporting actions that has cost millions of Americans and there families its lively hood.
ONE MORE TIME!!!

IF ANYONE WATCHED MEET THE PRESS TODAY JUST TO SEE, SOME GOOD OLD FASHION,----- HILLARY BASHIN!!!!
THEY WEREN'T DISAPPOINTED.

I REALLY WONDER WHY SHE WOULD GIVE TIM RUSSERT THE OPPORTUNITY TO TEAR INTO HER ONCE AGAIN.
SHE REALLY MUST BE A GLUTTON FOR PUNISHMENT.
SHE IS A TRULY BRAVE PERSON.  MSNBC HAS BEEN CRUEL TO HER. I WOULDN'T GIVE THEM THE SECOND CHANCE.
I DON'T THINK ANYONE DOUBT'S THAT SHE HAS THE KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIANCE NEEDED FOR THE PRESIDENT OF OUR COUNTRY.
I THINK NONE WILL DOUBT THAT,
SHE CAN FIX NAFTA,
SHE CAN FIX HEALTH CARE,
SHE CAN FIX THE SCHOOL SYSTEM,
SHE CAN FIX THE LOW WAGES IN OUR COUNTRY,
SHE CAN STOP THE WAR IN IRAQ,
WIN THE ONE IN AFGHANISTAN.
AND WHEN OUR TROOPS COME HOME SHE CAN GET THEM AND THEIR FAMILIES THE CARE THEY HAVE SO BADLY LACKED BY THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION

I've been making this argument for a long time now.  The "35 years" includes NAFTA and China's Permanent Most Favored Nation trade status.
Here's a little update for you Obamaheads that keep saying HRC is dead meat and should drop out. Out of well over 20,000,000 votes she is about 300,000 behind, or about one and a half percent. That could easily be made up in the Texas, Ohio and Pennsylvania votes. Then what's your suit going to say? Since he's stated multiple times the super delegates should go with the people's will. He's been running around racking up delegates in the caucuses of little dinky RED states. He may be digging himself a hole. But I'm sure he'll come up with some excuse of how this is politics as usual, even if Hillary ends this primary season with the popular vote. HA. And BTW, how many of you would tell BO to quit if he were only 1 to 2 percent behind in the popular vote. Not a single one of you! You are HYPOCRITS. Yep, look in the mirror. How ridiculous, to tell a candidate that is one to two percent behind to get out. It's just because you are all about your selfish candidate.
To the Clinton campaign:  Please pick a strategy. Either the weeping Hillary who adores Obama, or the mad as a wet hen, yelling Hillary.  She can play either role relatively well.
Obamas wife spoke slowly and thoughtfully. She said just what she ment to say.Why is her thesis from collage under key till after the election?Like you say,Obama, words matter. How bout when you decided you voted wrong after people didnt like it?I hit the wrong key?I didnt mean that vote.I missed it because someone told me too.Oh but Hillary sent us into war singlehandedly with that vote yrs ago .The one 2 years after you said you didnt know how you would have voted.I guess you misspoke but which time was that? Texas has a word for your talk. BULL
Elegant response.  Precise execution.  Worthy of a leader.
That is a rather thin arguement but so is his wole campaign. As the Indians used to say "Him big smoke, no fire." All of a sudden NAFTA is bad because it has not produced what it was supposed to produce which was lower commodity prices and a boon to the economy. The current administration and it's policies are far more to blame for today's economy than NAFTA is or ever was. But than, "If you want to hit a dog you can always find a stick." And Obama has found a dog he can hit. He could not tie the shoelaces of President Clinton and he never will. An empty suit!
Tell her Mr Obama
HRC has only voted against ONE trade agreement while in the Senate. She even voted in favor of the Australian Trade agreement despite saying on the Senate floor she feared it would stripe the Senate of drug importation over sight. HRC is taking her current anti-NAFTA position because she believes voters in Ohio and Texas are too lazy to look at her voting record and Senate speeches regarding trade agreements, and that the media is too lazy to research her record.
The proof is in the pudding!  Her poor judgement is becoming more and more clear as time passes. Hillary  has changed her mind, after the fact, on policies and decisions that affect our lives in major ways.  Hillary supported the war in Iraq, but she has changed her mind; She supported the No Child Left Behind Act, but now she changes her mind; She supported NAFTA, but now she changes her mind.  How much more do we need to find out about her to know that she is not the best choice.  Hillary, you are making women look bad.  I am still waiting for her to release her tax information and to find out who funded the Clinton Library.
Finally someone questioner her "35 years" of experience!! If I were married to a doctor it wouldn't qualify me to perform open heart surgery!!
Way to go, Obama! Clintons false outrage, another political ploy...games, I'm tired of being played.
I am personally torn at the moment. The closer we get to an Obama nomination the more nervous I am. Ross Perot made it perfectly clear that NAFTA was going to be bad for the country. Al Gore made fun of Ross Perot and distorted that wisdom in their debate. And nobody is talking about is the new agreement in the works, the SPP (spp.gov). This is a huge issue for me and I can't get a good read on Obama about it.
Clinton stated yesterday that democroats do not attack each other on Health Care policies. She lashed out. I was shocked on national TV to hear a lie. Truly she will say anything, just about anything to be elected.

1. She was the first to go after Obama's Health Care plan to initiate fear in Wisconsin, now she does not want anyone syaing same to her.
2. She has repeatedly claimed 8 years of Expireince in the White House - If so, why not claim NAFTA with it.
3. Referring to an opponent and saying...."your behaviour in this Campaign".... is like looking at a mad woman holding boom in her hands to smite a little boy. the fact that she is 14 yrs older and a deep democratic figure is out right RUDE.

4.If you cannot run a disciplined ampaign, with peoples money and trust, how can you rule a nation. The fact her husband led a nation does not mean she can lead a nation.

One thing in this whole campaign is that Hillary changes ALOT!
