Liberal group previews tactics

VoteVets.org has a Web video hitting McCain on Iraq and tries to tie it to the economy. It features an Iraq veteran, who had a child after she came back and says, "John McCain said that it would be okay with him if the US spent the next 1,000 years in Iraq. A thousand years? That's some commitment to the Iraqi people, Senator McCain."

"This is my little boy," she says, holding her child. "He was born after I came back from Iraq. What commitment are you making to him? How about 1,000 years of affordable health care? Or a thousand years of keeping America safe? Can we afford that for my child, Senator McCain? Or have you already promised to spend trillions of our dollars... in Baghdad?"

The group says it will run on Washington, DC-area cable. But this is part of a larger effort by a consortium of liberal groups, joined today in a conference call with reporters by John and Elizabeth Edwards, against not just McCain but also targeted Republicans.

Leaders of the group -- consisting of the Center for American Progress, USAction, MoveOn.org, the SEIU, VoteVets.org and Americans United for Change -- say it will pour in more than $20 million -- for ads and on-the-ground organization -- to draw links between Iraq and a struggling U.S. economy between now and November.

"It’s clear the crumbling economy is at center of people’s minds," said Eli Pariser, head of MoveOn.org. "We’re close to a recession, yet [the U.S. has spent] $500 billion in Iraq." He said that money should have gone to those affected by housing foreclosure crisis or toward affordable health care.

"We will focus on those legislators who stand in our way," Pariser added. The group’s "top-tier" targets, he said, are four senators -- Maine’s Susan Collins, New Hampshire John Sununu, Minnesota’s Norm Coleman, and Kentucky’s Mitch McConnell.

"There is great concern, anxiety, and angst about economic security," Edwards said on the call. "All of these things are made worse by the war in Iraq." He added that while he was on the trail, he found that "People don’t understand why we’re spending $500 billion and counting at the same time we have 47 million without healthcare, 37 million living in poverty…. It doesn’t make sense to them…. John McCain has made it very clear; he intends to go along with the same exact policy as George Bush."

Elizabeth Edwards had this message for voters. "If the economy is your No. 1 issue, then the war is your No. 1 issue."

She also lamented the role the press has played in not drawing more connections between issues like the war and the economy.

John Soltz, head of VoteVets.org, gave a preview of what the group’s tactics against McCain will be in the fall. “We’re going to continue to target Sen. McCain between now and the election,” Soltz said, adding. “We’re not going to disparage his service…. He served with honor, but when it comes to his policy on Iraq, he is no different than George W. Bush.”

*** UPDATE *** The RNC sends along this response: "The fact that Obama and Clinton refuse to denounce the groups they are now poised to benefit from -- and only object when it's convenient -- is indicative of their weak leadership when making difficult choices. It is moments like these that highlight Barack Obama's inexperience and why voters don't trust Senator Clinton."

If McCain's idea of patriotism is committing trillions of our dollars and thousands of American lives to 100 or 1,000 years in Iraq, then I must question my own patriotism.
What is the purpose of this?

didn't John Edwards exit the race?
Maybe if congress would stop giving themselves earmarks woth billions of dollars, maybe then we could afford a few more things.

Charlie Rangle got a $2 million dollar earmark so he could put his name on a building at NYU.  How many African American Children will not have a college education thanks to Congressman Rangle?

Another stupid goofy ad by a bnuch of stupid goofy people.  How about giving your $20 million to Hillary Clinton so she can upgrade from Motel 6 to The Hilton? So she can afford Pizza hut and not Jeno's Pizza.  So she can buy air time on cable instead of that low powered radio station.
So it begins.....
We simply cannot trust such groups, liberal or conservative. Their swift boating allegations need to be substantiateed; otherwise, such groups need to be tightly regulated.
These are the real issues facing America. I am glad they are finally getting some attention.
Praise God for these people, their financial backers, and the clarity of the message.

I just hope that it is enough and that in comes in time to make a difference. I think it will.

More importantly, let's all hope that the beneficiaries of it like Obama, Hillary and DEM Congress prove themselves worthy by actually spending money we don't have on us for a change.
I don't know why First Read hasn't posted the issue of the Clinton Campaign sending out a picture of Obama dressed in Kenyan garb during a 2006 trip there.  Clinton's top cop, Maggie Williams said it shouldn't be divisive; but too many in America are fueled by fear of anything Muslim and they knew that this picture would be a rallying call for their delusions.  First her campaign demanded the resignations of 2 staffers caught sending out the lies about him being a Muslim and now this.  It is disgusting that they are using some American's ignorance against them.....first by egging on hate against anything Muslim and second because they KNOW that Obama isn't a Muslim yet continue to try to meld the two into peoples minds.  If people fall for this nasty trick then shame on them for being so gullible.  But even more important for a person who wants to be President of the United States to try to use fear and hate against her opponent is just pathetic.  SHAME ON YOU HILLARY CLINTON and SHAME on any of you that fall for this mess. If you support her on issues fine, but to vote for her because she is using your fear against you......shame on you.
Go John and Elizabeth!
Johny, preparing for third run? He makes people sick.
"....when it comes to his policy on Iraq, he is no different than George W. Bush."

This is very very true, furthermore, McCain has people that previously worked for & advised Dick Chaney.  As we get closer to November, you will see all of Bushies men and horses working for or with McCain.

If that isn't enough to keep him from getting elected, I don't know what will.
If you run and hide like the Democrats do every time, then you better teach your child Arabic and buy them a prayer rug.
Quick story that reminds me of the Clinton campaign:

A man falls off a 10 story building.  As he passes each floor the people inside hear him saying, “So far, so Good.”
God help us all if this doesn't end soon. It is time for the Democratic party to get together again. The hate thrown back and forth is not good. We need to focus  on beating the republicans.
If you really like taxes, then your are going to just LOVE the Democrats. But of course, they won't tax you. They'll tax the other guy [wink, nod, wink].
Brilliant.  I have been waiting for Veterans like myself to finally speak up together against the rediculous nature of continuing this war.

I am thrilled to let America know where the Military really stands.  We're all for strength, but if America doesn't take care of its own troops, then what kind of America is that to defend?

A1C Andrew
I can hear O'reily and the like already; "they're not real solders, they're left-wing radical terrorist-supporting communists who hate America". Mark my words, they will say something like that... the tools.

Funny how the righties keep saying that we need to listen to and support the troops, but whenever they speak out they are attacked by the right. It makes me sad beyond words.
Only Hillary brings the whole deal to the table. We need to wake up and take advantage of her knowledge. This could be the most important election of our time.
Don't make past mistakes on voting for a good line or a man with a speech and no actions.
Hyperbole People, HYPERBOLE!

It was a figure of speech for saying we'll be there as long as we need to be because if we leave too hastily there will be cataclysmic results!

Whether it was right to invade Iraq is NOT the issue anymore. What to do now that we're up to our eyes balls in it is the issue now. The only problem, our eyes are COVERED so people aren't seeing that the 4k soldiers who have died so far will be nothing compared to the tens or hundreds of thousands who will die if we don't take the time to PLAN our withdrawal.

Believe it or not, democrats, Americans aren't the only humans who deserve human rights. You talk a big game about taking care of the human condition, but you're willing to jump out of the Middle East and watch a structure collapse that wasn't up to code in the first place.

And as for protecting America, since 2001, Americans have killed more Americans at home in terrorist attacks than Islamic extremists have.

Why? Because there haven't been any radical attacks from those extremists.

Why? Because as morbid as it might sound, as long as there are Marines and Soldiers in Iraq, al-Qaeda's not going to travel halfway around the world - they're going to look in their own backyard.

Bringing soldiers home does NOT make America safe. It allows extremists to REFOCUS ON THE AMERICAN NATION.

9/11 was NOT the first anti-American terrorist attack, so choose: American servicemen and servicewomen in Iraq or civilian targets here at home.

Choose. Because it's ONE OR THE OTHER. And no amount of soldiers at home is going to prevent a suicide bomber from walking in the front door of a school or mall, just as our home-grown shooters demonstrate.
It has been a huge surprise to me that the Republican candidates did not try to distance themselves from Bush's policies.  They all seemed to commit to "staying the course" except for Ron Paul of course. The Repulicans are determined to stay on that bus going over the cliff and McCains seems to be the new bus driver. There seems to be a certain psychology among Republicans to never admit you are wrong, never admit a mistake, it is always someone else's fault. Someday someone will get a PhD studying this phenonmenon.
Day #1, Barack Obama will have our troops out of Iraq! Day #1, Barack Obama will give health care to all that need it. Day #1, Barack Obama will end poverty and crime in America. Day #1, Barack Obama will give us Hope. Day #1, Barack Obama will give us Change.

Barack Obama is a savior, a gift from above. I just hope at some point I can just touch the man!
It is a good advertisement, especially since the usual Republican response is to compare a long-term American military commitment in Iraq to our commitment in Japan or Germany.

This comparison is ridiculous of course.  I urge anyone who believes we could ever have troops stationed in Iraq like we do in Japan and Germany to check out the history of the British occupation in Iraq.  The British troops were never safe or accepted.  The problem is this folks -- the people of Iraq have been occupied before (by the Ottoman Turks, and the British to name two) and they didn't like it.  Really, come to think of it, America didn't much like having the British troops occupying us either.

While many Iraqis will accept our help in stabilizing the situation we helped create, I don't think it is remotely possible that the Iraqis would accept long-term American bases in their country.  I don't think it is wise for us to even express such an option.  The Iraqis may not be able to unify to create a country, but they will have no problem unifying to kick us out if we start acting like permanent bases and permanent military occupation are our ultimate goals.

Again, I urge anyone who is curious about the past to check out what happened to the British occupation in Iraq-- not what is happening now, but what happened in the past.

One of the definitions of insanity is doing the same thing over again expecting a different result.
The leader of the Islam Nation has endorsed Obama and calls Obama "The  saviour of the world.

That's all we need in white house;  a Islam loving man.  Remember 9-11 "folks"??

Islam has stated that they " Will bring American down from within"

The American voters better wake up and soon!  This man scares me to death
Well Stated.  This country cannot afford 1,000 more years at war.... Let's make a new change in November
and give it a chance to work or not work.
Do the people of MoveOn.org and the others listed recall that Obama has voted to fund the War ever since he joined the U.S. Senate.  Obama said he didn't know how he would have voted while he was speaking for John Kerry and John Edwards at the national convention so he didn't make them look bad for their war vote...with that said we are supposed to believe him that with the evidence the senate received and the majority vote to go to war that Barack wouldn't have followed with a vote himself....Barack is running his campaign on the assumption he wouldn't have voted for the war if he was in the same position as the whole US Senate.
So rather than spend money on freeing a nation from dictator rule thereby enabling them to reep the benefits from the sale of their countries natural resources we should spend that money on bailing idiots out of foreclosure when they knew they couldn't afford that house in the first place. Not to mention bailing out corupt, greedy lenders yet again who exploit said borowers by raping the interests points. Seriously, left wingers need to stop "enabling" the weak people in this country and learn some tough love.
S.Ruff I don't think it is a problem. The American people are smart enough to differentiate Obama from muslims or Farrakan. And the press will make sure to ask him about it and he will clear the record. The difference between him and Kerry is that, Kerry would reject an accusation but always leave room for doubt or he would not do so strongly enough. Obama has already proven to be capable of clearing the record on more than one occassion, and he isn't affraid to do so publicly. It's a typical trick to take an unassociated person's comments and attatch it to a candidate but the benefit of that tactic is that it's easily disproven and can be turned to make the perpertrator of such rumors look petty.
{It has been a huge surprise to me that the Republican candidates did not try to distance themselves from Bush's policies.}

No attacks on US soil since 9/11. Very good to excellent economy. New avenue to peace in the middle east. Strong employment numbers over the years. Yeah, who'd want those things to continue? I guess maybe the Democrats.
Nuanced,

It has JUST as much to do with Republicans not admitting they're wrong as it does with Democrats REFUSING to take the veil of ignorance off that makes them believe a world full of humans can be warm and fuzzy.

On Iraq, you act like, "Oh, Bush did it. He can fix it." -- and you blame Republicans for not wanting to admit who's wrong?

Look at Bill Clinton's decision to not let America help Rwanda after we left Mogadishu in Somalia. Because they knew there would be no interference from peacekeepers, most notably American forces, they initiated a genocide. How many innocent people were killed for that, Nuanced? In case you don't have it off the top of your head:

800,000. Or More.

And anyone who supported that decision to stay out of it has that blood on their hands.

Nuanced, you want to show everyone how to take responsibility? Then vote for Obama. Get our troops out on day 1, and watch an enitre region explode with violence like we've never seen there. Then take responsibility for choosing to leave. Because far more will die than have died so far, and that'll be on you.
It's about time someone is strongly pointing this out. Mccain will cut "pork barrel spending" so he says, American tax dollars that would stay in the U.S. and provide American jobs-but has no problem spending billions to rebuild Iraq as our infrastructure crumbles around us. He should be running for president of Iraq!
Martha Jennings, Atlanta:  You need more help than Barack Obama can give you.  Come out of your dream-state and open your eyes!
"Maybe if congress would stop giving themselves earmarks woth billions of dollars, maybe then we could afford a few more things."

Sorry to tell you Jerry but it was the GOP that escalated spending in the last 7 years and drove our economy into a recession. Wake up!!
"If you really like taxes, then your are going to just LOVE the Democrats. But of course, they won't tax you. They'll tax the other guy [wink, nod, wink]. "

Like rich people (wink, wink)? Or do you suppose this "spend but don't tax" idiocy can continue forever? (Probably - all you right wingers think that).

You morons whining about being safe - put a gun to your head and pull the trigger - then you'll be safe.
