First Thoughts: 'Meet me in Ohio'

From Chuck Todd, Mark Murray, and Domenico Montanaro
CLEVELAND -- “Meet me in Ohio,” Clinton snapped at Obama on Saturday over his mailings that hit her on NAFTA and health care. “Let's have a debate about your tactics and your behavior in this campaign.” And here we are. Tonight’s debate, which takes place here at Cleveland State University, is the final debate until the pivotal March 4 contests in Ohio and Texas. And it could -- depending on what happens -- be the final debate of the Democratic race. It lasts from 9:00 pm ET to 10:30 pm ET, and it’s moderated by NBC’s Brian Williams, along with NBC’s Tim Russert. One other thing: It is snowing here, and the local NBC affiliate forecasts up to eight inches of snow by this afternoon.

*** What to watch for: The $64,000 question is: Which Hillary shows up -- the one we saw at the end of the Austin debate, or Ms. "Xerox" and "Shame on you, Barack Obama"? Certainly, this unknown tone she'll take at tonight's debate has a way of forcing Obama to be prepared for anything. It's not a bad place for her to be, in control of the tenor of this debate. Of course, is there such thing, after 20 debates, as a knockout blow anymore? Maybe not for Clinton but possibly for Obama. If he handles all of her shots, then he could put this thing away. If he wobbles, it could be a long six days for the front-runner. And keep in mind: The debate will be broadcast on all of the NBC affiliates in Ohio, and with weather likely to keep folks inside, there's a captive audience. More importantly, if you want a clue as to which Clinton is showing up tonight, think about this fact: Not a single Clinton TV ad is negative on Obama right now, in either Ohio or Texas.

*** Can you hear me now? Curious, who is Clinton listening to right now? When the going gets tough for a candidate, most end up ignoring the advice of those who they believe failed them for the last year and start only listening to a select few. Who are those select few anymore, besides husband Bill? Is it Maggie Williams? Ann Lewis? Mandy Grunwald? Has Mark Penn lost his place at the table? This may be why there are so many freelancers taking credit for Clinton saying she'll do this, or Clinton saying she'll do that. There's a lot of advice circulating, but we're guessing only a select few folks left in the Clinton inner-circle that the candidate is listening to.

*** Is a win a win? With tonight's debate and yesterday's Quinnipiac poll showing that Obama has cut her lead in Ohio from 21 points to 11 in about two weeks, it's probably worth posing this question: What happens if Clinton wins Ohio, but just by a point or two? A win is a win, of course. But is there something to say for making up nearly 20 points? Then again, with two new polls showing Obama leading Clinton nationally by double digits -- 51%-39% per USA Today/Gallup and 54%-38% per the New York Times/CBS -- the Clinton campaign would celebrate any win, no matter the margin. Nevertheless, according to our delegate math, Clinton winning both Ohio and Texas by 52%-48% would net her a combined 5-6 delegates. Yet toss in a potential Obama landslide in Vermont, and then her net March 4 haul could be as little as 2-5 delegates.

*** A split decision? While Clinton continues to lead the contest in Ohio, that’s no longer true in Texas, according to a new CNN survey. In that poll, it’s Obama 50%, Clinton 46%. A week ago, per the CNN poll, it was Clinton 50%, Obama 48%. Is it becoming more likely that March 4 becomes a split decision, with Clinton winning Ohio and Obama Texas? And if so, what does that mean? Does the race still go on? And speaking of those new national polls, how demoralizing is it for Terry McAuliffe to have to attempt to raise money today with what’s on the front pages of the New York Times and USA Today? Should Clinton folks be worried that rank-and-file Dems who view the two Dems equally favorably are simply falling in line behind the front-runner?

*** No Dodd about it: While all the vanquished GOP presidential candidates this cycle have seemed to endorse someone after their departure (Giuliani, Romney, Brownback for McCain; Hunter for Huckabee), not a single Democrat has weighed in -- until now. Per the AP, Dodd will endorse Obama today in Cleveland, and an Obama campaign source tells First Read it will occur at this morning’s press conference at 9:30 am ET. And, yes, Dodd becomes yet another superdelegate pickup for Obama. Perhaps it’s only fitting that Dodd is endorsing on a debate day. It was Dodd's attack on Clinton on the driver's license issue for illegal aliens that seemed to be the beginning of the steady fall we've witnessed over the last four months since that Philly debate.

*** All about Iraq: Though some may think McCain let something slip yesterday with his remark about his campaign potentially being a referendum on Iraq, don't buy it. This is what McCain wants this election to be about. He can't have this be a domestic election, it's not his strong suit so by giving straight talk on Iraq, it's pretty clear he knows if he can turn this election in a safety and national security election, he's got a boxer's chance. If this thing is about the economy, it may not matter who the GOP nominee is; it could be a potential disaster for the party. But the problem for McCain? If Iraq seems stable this summer, then that could force the electorate to not worry about it as much. It's a real box McCain may be in as far as the issue landscape.

*** On the trail: Before tonight’s debate, Clinton holds a town hall in Lorain, OH; Huckabee also is in Ohio, campaigning in Columbus and Mason; McCain is in Cincinnati and West Chester and then raises money in Tyler, TX; and Obama holds that press conference this morning in Cleveland. Also, Bill Clinton is in Texas.

Readers--consider the following:
(1) Why no mention anywhere of Hillary Clinton's speech on foreign policy which she gave yesterday to a forum at George Washington Univ?  I listened to it this morning on C-Span and it was outstanding.  It's really unfortunate that the media is more interested in trivial matters than substantive ones. Another exmaple of the media's refusal to cover Hillary in a positive light.
(2) Does anyone have an explanation as to why there has been no media attention to Louis Farrahkan's virtual endorsement of Obaham (Farrahkan apparently gave a very long speech on Sunday night extoling the virtues of Obama)? To me, this is another example of the media's refusal to cover anything negative about Obama.
(3) Given that two significant things occurred in the last 24-48 hour news cycle, one positive for Hillary and one negative for Obama, neither of which was given much, if any, coverage by the media, do you wonder why the media seemed fixated yesterday on one item:  that picture of Obama that the Clinton campaign supposedly emailed to Drudge?????  A tactical diversion away from what should have been the real news stories (see #1 and #2 above)?
(4) Am I the only person who suspects that it was the Obama camp that may have been the one that "leaked" this pic to Drudge?
TO UNDECIDED VOTERS:
Please go to hillaryclinton.com and read her foreign policy speech she gave yesterday. It should convince you that she's the one to lead the country out of the mess we are in!!!
You Americans who are idiots, I went to Sudan one time (all my family was born in Ireland and I live in NY as Catholic) with a friend of mine touring Sudan and Yemen. We wore Muslim robes and garb even though we were strictly Christians. But we wanted to entertain and show respect to our hosts and demonstrate our appreciation of human cultures (objective culture).
Now, if Obama did the same, you guy accuse him of being a Muslim. No, that is because of your hatred of other human cultures or you simply judge others by their dress rather than the content of their character. I understand Americans' fear of radical Islam, but you also have to understand every religion has a radical subgroup to it and you cannot lump all persons of one faith as terrorists.
Wasn't it Hillary who, a few weeks ago, was threatening to pull out of a debate with MSNBC because of the comments made about Chelsea? Guess sticking up for your family isn't as important as challenging your opponent.

Also, Hillary's grandstanding at the end of the last debate was disgusting. I am so honored...blahty blahty and just like that she was allowed to "close" the debate.

Obama put on your mitts and TKO this "experienced one".
Someone suggested they prohibit applause at the debate. Good luck with that. What, are they going to drag out everyone who claps? Everytime this rule has been stipulated, it gets ignored.

I wish all the Clinton Bashers here would have watched CNN last night when they really compared Obama's "accomplishments" in the state legislature, where he voted "present" rather than commit to things such as banning Sex Shops from operating within a certain area of schools, and the ever-present gun control issues!  Who was he trying to appease?  His Negative Ads against Clinton had a "Seed of Truth" as all lies do, but it was proven last night that Hillary was against NAFTA but would not say so against her husband, and has fought against it and called for reform ever since leaving the White House.  Obama's past were "boneheaded" mistakes and should be overlooked - "We should be looking forward, not back" (per Obama) but according to Obama - all of Hillary's past should be dragged about over and over, even if slanted slightly south of the truth!!!  His attacks on her are acceptable, somehow, and when she tries to defend herself she is "attacking" him.  If this man cannot stand the very little heat he has gotten from his fellow dem., I can't wait to see how he handles the onslaught of the republicans.  Oh, sorry, I'm sure that anything said against him will be considered racist!!!!!  This double standard is absurd and I cannot believe that people are falling for the GW Bush type of campaign.  Make everyone feel good and important and they will fall in line like zombies.  I guess whatever works - God help us if this flegling gets in the White House!  Or, the question might be - who will be running things???  Another Chaney-like administration ahead???  Think about it!
I'm 57, no spring chicken, but spring is in the political air for the first time since my youth.  Obama is a motivator, and this country needs one, because he's right:  If we want change, then we the people are going to have to do the heavy lifting.  As long as we let Washington run on automatic, we've abdicated our responsibility as citizens.  Remember, WE are the government, not the people we elect.

As for Hillary, I'm really sorry to say this, but in the past few days, I think she's made it almost impossible for another woman to run for president for at least a generation.  She's begun displaying all those stereotypical characteristics that have had men saying for years that a woman would be too "moody" for the presidency.  Sad, sad, sad.

I'm just waiting for her head to do a 360 while she spews pea soup.
I haven't heard Clinton talk about being in the solutions business lately.  I guess that stupid campaign theme lasted about three days.  Clinton is a complete lunatic.  An totally emotionally unbalanced freak.  She is a psycho!!!
When the media asks questions like, "which Hillary will show up tonight," I cringe.  All I've heard from MSNBC and CNN over the last couple days is how we never know which side of Hillary will be out on the campaign trail.  The coverage that Hillary Clinton has received from CNN and MSNBC has been biased at best and sexist at worse.
Just like every human on the Earth, Hillary has different sides to her personality.  We are all multidimensional.  It is okay for Hillary to be angry one day and gracious the next - that is human.
All those states voting on the 4th. Hillary is counting on you.John Bitter thank you.I did see it and wonder why Obama is so agressively deneying any Muslim ties. I think Muslim is a beautiful religion. It is not mine but i can still admire it. If Obama had said he was a muslim when young but when able to test for himself he became christian i would think that even better. It is the feeling of untruthfulness that bothers me. Didnt he mention in )dreams of my father) studying Quran? I read his teacher Tine Hahiyary he studied Mengaji(recitation of Quron).etc more and more. You would think he would be proud of that pic????
Will the questioners finally ask Hillary WHY SHE WILL NOT RELEASE HER TAX RETURNS?

And make her answer the question. For crying out loud...
J. Biggs (Sent Tuesday, February 26, 2008 10:21 AM)

Why would she????
Look at the disaster that happened when she released her campaign papers....

11,000 pizzas in one month?????
$25,0000 for room s at the Bellagio??????

What sane person would contribute to her campaign after seeing that?????

I shudder to think what her income tax paperwork says.

She needs time anyway before she releases it...
Just to hide all the bad stuff..
It won't be long before the nations long, cruel obsession with the clintons will be over...finally...but cheer up, obama will either tax us all to death or mccain will kill all of our children in wars of choice and convenience...
Ohio and Texas it's time to save the Democratic party from splitting --- it's time to recognize the true leader in Barack Obama! We cannot afford to lose this general election --- we cannot afford any more of Hillary's mudslinging!
Clixton: "Meet me in Texas"

He did, and now he's tied her up in the polls.

Billary: "Meet me in Ohio"

Be careful what you wish for Billary, you might just get it.

BY the way: Does Chuck Todd have pink eye or something? I hope he doesn't infect the whole MSNBC crew!! Go home until that infection passes Chuck!!
I have to say that I will be really wondering if the debate will really end at 10:30pm.  I don't think that it will.

In regards to the change that can be Xeroxed comment made by Clinton; has she written all of her own speeches?  Is she saying that she is the first person running for office that is writting all new material?  I would find that hard to believe especially after watching Meet the Press.

The polls are changing...  From all the pundits and talking head seem to think that Clinton needs to have major wins in Ohio and Texas to really get close to the amount needed to win.  If these polls are good projections into the next set of primaries, Obama is about to step closer to winning the nomination, but he still won't have a lock on it.

He will get closer to the nomination with the Dodd endorsement.  That is really a positive step forward for Obama since Dodd has integrity and knowledge.  Could there be other former candidates that back Obama?  I can't see Biden being to far behind Dodd in making an edorsement.  I would expect that Biden might follow Dodd's lead.  The next biggest person who would have any kind of endorsement would be Edwards in my view short of FDR coming back from the grave to give an edorsement.
I have a great idea - if you want motivation - why not just elect Obama's speech writer!
The democrats have once again proved they suck at winning a presidential election. The republicans have been very vocal that they are voting for Obama in the primaries and republican in the general. They boast about it.I havnt had a president that gave a rats ass about me for almost 8 years and guess I will have another one for 4 more at least.Obama will get creamed in november
"With Clinton on the attack, a recognized leader on foreign and military affairs is vouching for Obama's readiness," ...that would be Senator Chris Dodd!
This Hillary reminds me of Richard Dreyfuss' character in the movie WHAT ABOUT BOB?  Dreyfuss was driven mad because he was overshadowed by the authenticity of Bill Murray's character and struggled with his personal appeal.

Like Dreyfuss, she and her husband are playing dirty & using every tactic to try and convince the people that idea of Barack/Bob as president is an allusion. I think this episode will end the same way, Barack wins and Hillary will be left to repair her image.

WHAT ABOUT BARACK?
Hello America;

Sen. Hillary Clinton can't even manage her campaign correctly, let alone this country.

She  is trailing  because of her traditional way of thinking and campaigning.

The world has changed, and to get  things accomplish now in goverment and business you have to be very creative and decisive all mix with wisdom.

Obama is still in contention for one reason.
Intelligent strategics in his campaign strategy from day one period.

Sen. Clinton has a mouth,  a power name, campaign money, political
experience and intelligents. She underestimated Obama.

"She needs to stop blaming the media for her ineptness"

Obama 08 Day One
One thing that comes to my mind for me is Clinton's "FAMILY LEAVE ACT of 1993.  That sure helped me out during my working career.  My company would have fired me for taking medical time off, if it was not for the Family Leave Act & I am grateful for that.
g.eglesias'pennsylvania (Sent Tuesday, February 26, 2008 10:17 AM)

Then thank Sen. Chris Dodd.  That was his work.
I agree,I think Obama put the pic out. He would have had the pic. I dont understand why he didnt use it when it came out ,no matter who, to show his work in a different country.I also agree being Muslim is not a bad thing. It is the few that ruin the name Muslim ,i believe. That is why i think Obama did it to reflect Farrakhans speech calling Obama the Messiah.Stressing Blackman from White woman. He will keep America from falling? and he will save the world. Has anyone heard end of Obamas messages have been different? If you will help me we will change this country. Now he adds and the world. It is so scary i dont want my country in his hands. It isnt fear mongering or raceist but judgement and common sence. His attitude about the pic tells it all for me. think.
Clinton....yeah right! simple, silly, incapable, unstable, inconsistent, unsure, unmanageable, and pathetic.

And again I say...........OBAMA 08! That's the way it's going to be. Period. point blank!
To Karen in Newtown, CT...

1. The media is talking about Clinton's foreign policy speech.

2. They've talked about Farrakhan...that was yesterday's news cycle so please keep up.

First of all, you have to compare Obama's and Hillary's national legiislative records, not state. Not everyone lives in Illinios. Go to thomas.loc.gov for this.
Second, most of the "present" votes in Ill. have to do with Obama objecting to the laws for technical reaons. For examle, at the urging of a women's advocate group, he did not vote against abortion on his own.
You are not trying to do your best to compare records in an unbiased way. You seem to be focusing exclusively on Obama's flaws perhaps too thirsty to have a woman president in the White House regardless of any scandal of any scope.
I can't take it anymore. I was open to both Clinton and Obama, but the final straw was Hillary's schizophrenic behavior on Saturday; it was unbecoming for a potential president. I'm praying Obama does well in the debate tonight and that Texas and Ohio voters end the Democratic primary season by voting for the candidate who's ahead in the national polls, the popular vote, the number of delegates, and the number of states won. I'm ready to move on from the Clintons' manic moods.
To all the MSNBC/Obama Network people

Remember, Hillary Clinton, has 1/2 of the Dem's that support her and if you keep up these senseless and hateful attacks on her, be prepared to have McCain as your next president.  You are turning a lot of us true blue dem’s OFF!  Shut up!

Mark my word.
Ohio and Texas voters, you are the only ones that stand between another four years of bushlike policies with John McBush (or McWar). A vote for Obama is a vote for him.

Vote for Hillary!!
People seem to miss the point with Obama's campaign.  A democracy can ONLY work when the people are involved and work hard to make their voices heard.  Change happens when we have a leader that inspires us to work hard for that change.  I am a 55 year-old white woman - the perfect demographic for Hillary Clinton.  I admire her...but my vote goes to democracy and Barack Obama.
THE RECESSION HAS BEGUN. WE ARE BROKE. WE NEED IMMEDIATE HELP. WHO CAN DELIVER IMMEDIATE CONCRETE SOLUTIONS ? HILLARY CLINTON p.s would anyone loan me 50 bucks to fill up my gas tank so that i can go to work and make 25 bucks to pay you back ?
"Who is Clinton listening to right now?" Based on her recent "shame on you" outburst in Ohio, I think she's going with her gut. Tellingly, the clip of her minor tantrum was not posted on YouTube by her own campaign, which suggests people within her campaign were not all that happy about it.
This country has lost their sense of good judgment. I just can't imagine Obama being the nominee insteat Hillary. At least we know her...who kwows him..hmmmmm.
Could it be that many of you Hill supporters are voting for her out of " The Audacity of Hope" that she will reincarnate her husband's years as President and not because you sincerely believe in her "tried and proven 35 years of experience necessary to be President?" Even if it were possible to bring Bill back for another run, he may not even be able to replicate his own "success" because different variables are in play and what worked then may not now, even if he were to perform exactly as he did back then. Do you really want to assume that risk for 24 years of a Bush/Clinton dynasty? Yes, 24 years because she'd be only a one-term President. It's time for a "Change We Can Believe In"
I cannot believe the american people are so gullable again.  just like they were swayed by George w. Bush, the good old guy.  Obama is the same.  He is not good for our country and will not beat the republicans.  He is one of the same.  Wake up dems.  we have it in our hands and you are loosing it for us.  vote for hillary,  she can turn this around.  don't be foolish.
So as I was sitting in my room at the Bellagio chowing down on a couple of slices provided by the Clinton campaign....I got to thinking, where are the show tickets?  Geez, gotta keep us fat and happy living off the donors backs right?  C'mon Hill let's see how much juice you really have, get me some box seats for a Sox game at Fenway this summer, whaddaya say?
As a lifelong Democrat who voted for Bill each election and had expected to be voting for Hillary as the nominee before the primary season began, I am truly incensed by the tack being taken by the Hillary and her minions.  I am so disgusted by her and her campaigns behavior that I would consider sitting the election out and not voting at all if she were the nominee.  I am a Marine Corps veteran and I love this country.  However the criminal masquerading as our current president and his neo-con bretheren had me considering moving out of the country rather than continue to abide a growing miltary-industrial-evangelical complex.  Now with Obama I truly believe that our great nation has chance to recover if we can harness the energy and talent of the REAL American citizenry that's starting to coalesce around Obama perhaps we can usher out the old politics as usual, (a playground for the wealthy and influential), and usher in a new and TRULY BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE, OF THE PEOPLE Federal Government.
Jaycee touched on something important to us boomers - us. We've only had two presidents of our generation, Bill Clinton and George Bush, so it's completely natural that we have a strong desire for another - just to clean up the mess before we leave the stage, if for no other reason. But it's already time to turn over the keys to the next generation. I do it with glee, because for the first time since I joined "the movement" we seem to have some fresh reinforcements. I'm delighted with Obama's supporters. With me, he's popular for being popular. That's enough.
Some polls indicate that Barack Obama has gone ahead in Texas and is now in a position to pull away. And other polls show that he is closing the gap fast in Ohio. Either way, all Obama has to do anyway is stay close and he will probably get the majority of the delegates available in Texas, and enough in Ohio to make whatever gains Clinton gets in Ohio negligible. And, remember Wisconsin. Obama was not expected to win in Wisconsin, yet he won by a landslide. If Obama pulls that off in Ohio, Hillary's goose is cooked, if it isn't already.

The saddest thing is that Hillary Clinton may be the best choice for president.

But sticking it in people's faces, writing off whole states, regions, ethnic groups and educational levels as  "trivial" has done her in.

Add to that, attacking Bambi with a meat cleaver this year has proved counterproductive, in the least.

Since the days of old, arrogance will take you to the dance and arrogance walks home alone.
Mama always said, "Hillary's like a box of chocolates - you never know what you're gonna get."  Will we see the woman "honored to be on stage with" Obama, or the one screaming "shame on you" tonight?  The fact that nobody knows is enough to not vote for her.  We certainly don't need that kind of unpredictably/instability in the White House.
Bhillary is moddy, venumous, schizophrenic, and brings alot of shouting and rage to the election. I really believe she is bipolar, and will do or say anything to get a vote.   Her behavior is embarrassing and not the kind of behavior we want to see in a boss, leader or president.  I used to like, her, but no more.  I will vote for Obama
Texans and Ohioans!!!  Stop being brow beaten by the media and the MOJO and turn the tide for Clinton.  It's appropriate that Texas and the Alamo could be the turning point for the Clintons.  Obama's supporters have to have hope that he will do the right thing because he hasn't been a proven fighter.  Clinton's supporters don't have to hope she'll do a great job.........WE KNOW!!!!
A of Illinois (Sent Tuesday, February 26, 2008 10:05 AM)

Seems to me, that he's done a pretty good job fighting the vaunted Clinton Machine, and is winning!
The polls are reflecting what the public sees and the inevitability of Obama based on the media's portrayal that he's inevitbale.  It's not the first time this election that there have been upsets and I'm hoping for some more in Hillary's favor.  She's proven during this race that she is a fighter.  I for one would like a fighter and not a talker representing me in Washington.  We have plenty of talkers there already.  They call it black price that 80-90% of the black vote has gone to Obama.  I wouldn't mind seeing a little woman and white pride.  You may not have approved of everything the Clintons did in the White House (just as I'm sure you are not going to approve of everything Obama would do) but for 8 years this country had relative peace and prosperity.  I'm not willing to waste my vote HOPING that Obama will be a good President when I already KNOW that Hillary will be one.
Be proud MSNBC you made a President . but what will you do with your Messiah , when his Cult cannot collect on the Promised Land ?
Michelle gave the motto ; " Wake-up ( black ) America. " May be you can make a new Superman !
BRAVO DEAN CURRAO IN CRYSTAL LAKE!!! YOU SAID IT BEST!
Sorry Hillary, not in my name! We are disappointed with your behaviour. You've given a bad example
for the American. We don't appreciate your sarcasm.
How can we elect someone, whose anger is so patent, even before our very eyes. Never we make such a blunder.
No to Hillary
I definetely refuse to vote for Hillary! Enough is enough. She's already shown her true face. Not ready to be the American president. It would be a shame for the American people.
Go home Hillary!
