Huck show to McCain: Debate me

Posted: Tuesday, February 26, 2008 11:26 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Matthew Berger
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Huckabee said his campaign has been asking the McCain campaign to debate them and suggested questions surrounding McCain’s adherence to campaign finance laws raises doubts about his viability.

Speaking at a press conference that drew no reporters other than the six who travel with the candidate -- despite the national press corps in town for the Democratic debate -- the candidate said he wants to debate McCain.

“There's a race going on, and I wish Sen. McCain was debating me this weekend,” Huckabee said. “I wish we were gonna be in Cleveland tonight on stage or in Dallas or in Houston or San Antonio or Austin or somewhere between now and Tuesday having a debate.”

He said Republicans deserve a debate and that he was “disappointed” a forum between the remaining candidates hadn't been planned.

“We've made it very clear that we would love to have," he said, "whether it's a debate or a forum or Q and A, where both of us are there. I think any type of format would be acceptable to us and any location would be acceptable to us.”

Huckabee said the race remained open while the McCain questions about his spending were in the air. “What can John McCain actually spend?” Huckabee asked. “And he seems to be almost being bitten by his own campaign finance reform act, and there are a lot of issues to be settled with what happens in his spending limits.”

Huckabee added that McCain may have to “go completely dark between virtually now and the nomination convention.”

Huckabee did not hold a public event in Cleveland, but did receive a private tour of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, before traveling to Columbus and Mason for rallies as well as a fundraiser in Dayton.

I agree that McCain should debate more. We have had 20 debates between the Democratic Candidate. Shouldn't the republicans get to know their candidates and see what they stand for. However, I don't see why Huck is asking for a debate so late in the race. He should have been asking for debates earlier right after Romney droped out of the race.
Maybe we can have the weekly series of Clinton-Huckabee debates? Keeps everybody happy.
Ah Huck you are such a nudge! McWar can barely walk let alone talk to you for an hour. Pray for him, he so misguided and is being used by the boys at the top.  He will never be in the GE! But you know that.
Gotta give it to Huckabee for trying to drain the last bit of notoriety from this campaign he can. Mc CAin slid right in because no one was paying much attention to the GOP race, not even the republicans after the Clinton/Obama show of this campaign season. he was very funny on SNL  a career awaits.......
What is this guy after? Better name recognition for more speaking opportunities in the Caymans?

IMO Huckabee's candidacy at this point is all about dragging further concessions out of McCain for the conservatives.  I say let them.  The more McCain has to marry himself to the failed policies of the radical conservatives the worse he'll do in the Fall.
Johnson -
He tried. Gov. Huckabee wanted all along to have his turn to let the American people know his platform...he has never been given the chance to answer the questions in a national forum - where people can truly get to know him and what he stands for. HE IS THE HOPE AND EXPERIENCE PACKAGE ALL IN ONE. He has been begging for the opportunity to share that. Instead of using the attention he brought for the purpose of a public forum for his platform, the media dictated the situation and continued to trivialize his campaign. We always heard about the silly stuff, which has kept his name out there, but the media refuses to discuss his plans for the future of our country and his incredible accomplishments as Governor of Arkansas - which together make him the strongest candidate in the race for the White House!

I would love to see him have the chance to answer the tough questions and share his platform with this nation. Whether or not he is elected - the people who lead this country through this time of economic instability need to hear Gov. Huckabee's message and realize that it comes from experience and a true passion for America. It would be wise for us all to listen, take note and put his experience to good use!
I agree---there should be a debate with the remaining Republican candidates: McCain, Huckabee and Paul.  I also know that it won't happen.  McCain is too afraid with the close margins in Texas and doesn't dare endanger his leads in Ohio and Rhode Island.  Essentially most politicians are only "mavericks" when they have nothing to lose.
I don't blame Hillary one bit. If I were her I would ask Obama  tonight about....

His long time friendship with Resco the slum lord who has been indited,  and who contributed to Obama's campaigns.

Why OBama lied about his deal with Rezco and why Obama gave Rezco a tour of the property Obama later bought.

Why Obama would put on a muslin outfit after what happened on 9-11.

Why Obama belongs to a all black church whose main goal is Africa, not Jesus Christ, and supports Farrakan the leader of Nation of Islam.

Farrakahn has called Obama, "The Saviour of the
world" and Islam has stated they will bring America down from within.

There too many questions that the press refuses to ask Obama. There are too many things we do NOT know about this man.

The press has given him a free ride and I pray to God that the American people will not have to pay a heavy price for this.

Nobody is debating on the Rep. side because no one cares. McCain doesn't need to debate you Mike. He already won the nomination. To debate now is either training for a better debator or opening McCain up to say something stupid.

Why should McCain put his name out there for the media frenzy? Better to stay under the radar and let the Dems beat each other up.
"I don't see why Huck is asking for a debate so late in the race. He should have been asking for debates earlier right after Romney droped out of the race."

There were Republican debates already scheduled at the time that Romney dropped out (e.g., on another network), but they have been canceled.  I don't know if they were canceled because the network thought they were no longer newsworthy or because McCain and his people decided that a debate against Huckabee could only hurt McCain and could not help McCain.
Yo Huck,  that spineless whimp will never agree to a debate...he probably won't even show respect enough to give you a response!!!
The most important thing to note is that Gov. Huckabee is keeping the issues relevant and is keeping good, conservative solutions within the talking points of many conversations. Although the media never gave him a shot, and although people early on dubbed him the 'preacher wannabe president', he has a real connection with middle america that is similar to the passion that is driving people in numbers to the Obama rallies. It is VERY important - especially at this early point in the race for the White House - that the issues stay current and that the GOP continues to have talking points, if for no other reason than to force McCain to address the domestic issues that are forefront in everyone's minds.
Keep expressing the true sleaziness of Republican politics John Doe, the more the public sees of the true GOP the more they will turn away.
I find this debate thing a bit boring.....

McCain has no business debating Huck...
Just like Obama has no business debting The Clinton's....

If you have not figured out people's positions by now, you are either blind or have ADD....
John Doe, Seattle -- you are either as thick as a brick or beyond contempt for your Obama smears
I'm a democrate and Obama supporter but seriously, the Repubs  made a grave error in going with McCain instead of Huck.  Huck is the only GOP who could debate Obama or Clinton.  McCain is afraid to debate Huck for fear of appearing the mean little troll he is.
Its to late now and would not benefit anyone, the issue hes facing now such as lobbysist, camp fianceing he will let time fade them away.. Why let some one bring up these issue when really hes almost locked up the primary...Just politics as usual, flip floppers.
Pssssst...John McBush doesn't want open debate or dissent...just send him your kids to get killed is all you need to know
Mccain won't debate Huck, because if it lasted over 10 minutes, he wouldn't have anything to say-simply because he has about 3 lines, and after that he is completely oblivious. No substance, no accomplishments, and nothing to offer America except more of the same.
Huckabee has been asking for a debate from McCain since CNN cancelled the one scheduled for 2/28. A petition has been signed and is growing at www.mustdebate.com  .I think that McCain would not compete with Huckabee in a discussion of the issues. McCain is not quick witted enough and would look bad. In short, the MCcain camp is scared to have dialogue and echange ideas with Huckabee in a public forum. The GOP has hurt itself by promoting MCcain to the exclusion of the others. This is supposed to be democracy. The media has helped make a shady warmonger appear to be our "presumptive nominee".
Shame on the GOP for lack of fairness. Shame on the media for their lack of journalism on our other choices.
John Doe, Seattle --

You are sooo on the mark John! Great posts!
John McCrook doesnt want to debate cause he is wanting people to think Huckabee is out of the race.  McCrooks usual policies, hide the truth and make people believe what he wants them to believe.  A hero - more like a coward.  If he is so "great" then why not debate - what does he have to loose.  He knows he has a past full of lies he doesnt want known and he is scared of it.  What is he going to do if he should get the rep. nomination and has to debate the dems.  run scared like he is doing now?  McCrook be honest Mike Huckabee is still in the race and can still take it to the convention - why fight it, pretending its not so doesnt make it reel!
I would like to see a debate between Huckabee and McCain.

McCain inherited his position, he certainly did not earn it.  The conservatives on the ticket split the votes and left good ole John McCain with minority wins with huge prizes.

McCain is a wimp if he does not debate.  SO much for the war hero status.
I agree we need a debate for the republican primary race!  Why does McCain get a "pass" on this kind of political discourse just because he is ahead in the delegate count?  The demos have had MANY MANY MANY debates.  Shouldn't republican voters have an opportunity to hear their candidates too?  Oh, I forgot. . . those states that haven't voted yet just don't count!  Isn't that what the media has been saying since McCain had a 200 delegate lead with only 13% of the states voting.
Anything Hillary say about Obama is used against her...  I have never seen more Negative reporting as I have this election!!!  You only show parts of what Hillary that makes her look bad...  But you show all of Obama's speech from beginning to end!!!  Why don't you pick out the best parts of Hillary...
Huckabee has a point. McCain won't dare debate him though. He knows he'd lose and lose badly.

What in the world will he do when he has to face one of the Democrats?

Has buyers remorse set in yet Republicans? If not just wait awhile. McCain is so going to get trounced in November.
As I seem to recall, when the Democrats started debating you were insistent that the moderators asked "hard questions' of the candidates, especially of  Hillary and Obama. McCant has yet to answer any "hard question" and when the question posed to him are semi-hard, his head expands, his face turns red and he has to fight back using his famous "F" word. He is not a debator, he just gets mad. He needs to prepare himself for Obama and a few debates between now and then might help him a little. All conservatives know that he needs A LOT OF HELP! Right Jerry/Corpus Christi,TX?
Why, they both line up pretty much on everything!  Well, except for the fact that McCain can actually locate Pakistan on a map.
TEXAS VOTER,

Nicely put, war hero McCain is a wimp if he doesn't debate Huckabee!
We need this debate - it would be good for both Huckabee and McCain. I don't know why it was cancelled to begin with.
John Doe; keep drinkin' that kool-aid, buddy.  When you start seeing ANYTHING Farrakan says as being meaningful, it's time to dip right in.  And don't forget the pic of Bush in native garb in Ho Chi Minh City, home of those who killed 58,00 U.S. Soldiers.  Must mean he's a Commie, right?
I think they should debate.  And I think they should be asking some really hard questions.  I think that there are still people out there who have a choice in the up coming primaries for their respective states, and they at least deserve the same opportunity I had to choose a candidate that best reflects my values from the field of candidates left.

I think that if John McCain doesn't debate Mike Huckabee, it will destroy him in November.  If there is no other reason for him to debate Mike Huckabee than to prepare for the Clinton/Obama debate, then I think he should take it.
To "John Doe" of Seattle:

You confirmed the fact that all racists are cowards by obviously not putting down your real name.
Any format, any location, probably any time? Ummm love the Huckster but this kinda sounds a bit desperate don't you think?
FINALLY!  I for one am sick of watching the repeats of CNN's democratic debate.  McCain should have to work to earn ALL of the Republican's votes.  The largest Republican state, Texas, hasn't even voted yet!  On to the debate!  That's how it's done!
I think if McCain is man enough we will debate Huckabee. However I think he is to scared that he will lose. Because honestly Huckabee is a much better speaker and better on the issues. He would win hands down (if there was a debate) and definately take Texas, and maybe Ohio. Not RI or Vermont but really Huck wont win those states anyway. I think he might win Texas anyways. The latest poll from ARG has McCain at 45 % and Huck at 41%. He may pull it off in Texas.
I would very much like to see a debate between Huckaby and McCain. I personally am for Huckaby at this point because of his stance on abortion. We have to realize as a nation and as people, that we are killing little people when we allow abortion. We don't deserve God's mercy for allowing this to take place. We don't deserve His mercy anyway, but He loves us so much. One day He will judge. We still have an opportunity to turn to God and stop our evil ways. I am for the person that reflects God the most, and right now that seems to be Huckably.
We wouldn't be having this problem if you people voted for Romney instead of Rhino McCain.  And Huxtorbee is only getting a few crumbs of delagates because the conservative candidate is out and we are disillusioned
Huck has been railroaded by the media. He has never been taken seriously, and as a result, our country will suffer tremendously in the next four years. Americans need to make up their own minds for a change and stop being brain washed by the EXTREMELY liberal media. God save us all.
Internet savvy folk have no excuse: you should know all the candidates. We can bypass the power of well-funded globalist props like Obama to make a false impression. We can read the platform of Huckabee and others. In the end, the only real candidates are Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul. Sinca Paul has been unable to play nice and get more delegates than come free in a Happy Meal, I will vote Huckabee in November. If they don't give me a choice, I'm writing in, "Jesus Christ".
As the Republican field has narrowed, we deserve to get the same televised one-on-one time with our candidates that the Democrats have had.  Has McCain responded yet to Huckabee's request/challenge?P
McCain would be a fool to debate Huckabee now, because he would loose, Huckabee is a great debater and why would McCain pass the ball when he can take a knee for four downs?  Huckabee is the most conservative canidate to ever run for president.  He is for:
REAL tax reform
Less federal government
Local (self) government
A strong millitary we use WHEN we have to.
Human rights for ALL humans
Traditional marriage
The right to bear arms.
Seperation of Church and State

The Republicans rejected the conservative canidate they deserve what they've going to get.

McCain has tried again and again for the GOP nomination, and when he finally comes close, that pesky Huckabee won't just step aside and hand him the candicacy. If he really is an inevitable winner, he shouldn't have anything to lose in a debate. Since Super Tuesday McCain has been dubbed the presumptive GOP nominee and only the Democratic campaign is getting all the attention. The same should go for Republicans; especially when the largest Republican state (Texas) still is days before its primary and caucus.
