McCain supporter plays up 'Hussein'

From NBC's Kelly O'Donnell
CINCINNATI, Ohio -- One of the speakers before McCain took the stage used some noteworthy language this morning.

Bill Cunningham, who I am told is a radio host here, repeatedly referred to Obama as Barack Hussein Obama -- at least three times. (Hussein is, as most know, Obama's middle name.)

Cunningham's tone was derisive on Obama's positions, and he also spoke very critically of mainstream media accusing the collective media of trying to get Democrats elected.

Rob Portman, former US Trade Rep. under President George W. Bush, followed Cunningham and lightly chided him saying, "You're out of control again." But then thanked Cunningham for supporting McCain.

Portman, who is widely rumored to be in the McCain veepstakes running, endorsed McCain this morning as well.

McCain is not on stage yet.

*** UPDATE *** Two senior McCain advisors say, "We do not agree" with the comments made by radio host, Bill Cunningham at today's event. Advisors say they had no advance knowledge of Cunningham's comments.

The campaign says it invites radio hosts to "warm up the crowd" at some events but that Cunningham has no role in the campaign.

*** UPDATE 2 *** McCain repudiates and apologizes for the comments.
Before reporters could even ask about the provocative speaker, McCain addressed the issue, saying he repudiated the comments and has respect for his Democratic opponents. McCain said the use of "Hussein" as a political jab was not appropriate.

"I never met Mr. Cunningham," McCain said, "but I will make sure nothing like that ever happens again."

McCain accepted responsibility for the speaker while also saying he had not been in the room and had not heard the comments himself. McCain said he did not know how the radio host had been invited but acknowledged there must have been some coordination with his campaign.

McCain also spoke more about his own comments yesterday that the "war will be over soon." He did not give a time for what "soon" means. He reiterated that he accepts that his political fortunes and Iraq may be intertwined. He seemed to be reacting to the print reports yesterday that he had "retracted" his comment that he'd "lose" if he failed to convince the American people that US strategy is working.

I don't see a big deal with them using peoples full name. However, if individuals are using his middle name as a sign of disrespect, then it is clearly a problem. This election is about issues and only issues will let the candidate win. I believe that the public has finally become aware of the surroundings. They are more in tune with their government than ever before. Things that the government has gotten away with will no longer be the norm. McCain: Welcome to the new generation of politics.
Typical right-wing sleaze.  They're going to throw so much of this "stuff" we'll all need a shower after the election.  Republican politics in all its glory.
A message to all you people thinking of running for office....

Before you jump into the abyss....
Better think twice when it comes to your name.....

I see nothing wrong with the statements Mr. Cunningham made.
These people think they are acting in good nature! Cunningham and people that are narrow minded should not be allowed to introduce any person. When we act like this we are as bad as the terrorist we claim are out to get us. Great example for the kids.
If Bill Cunningham was invited to warm up the crowd...doesn't that give him a role in the campaign?  Come on McCain, take responsibility for the people you involve yourself with.
So now other campaigns are not allowed to use Obama's name when referring to him?

I know that he has achieved an almost God-like status among many, and the press treats him as if he writes their paychecks, but we should now take note if someone calls him by his name?

I wonder how many times the words Hillary RODHAM Clinton have been printed or spoken?  Anyone take the speakers to task over it?
Bill Cunningham is about as low as trash can get.  Nothing but a Rush, Hannity, O'Reilly wannabe, but lacking in talent.
Obama is not going to get the Xenophobic Vote anyway.

Obama is better than that, and so are his supporters.
Wow. We're already seeing a difference between the McCain and Clinton campaigns, in how they compete against Obama. When did Clinton ever disavow comments before a storm of criticism?

These McCain guys seem a little smarter. This next one might be a tougher race.
At least they are having dignity and discrediting his comments.  Hillary wouldn't have ever done that.  **cough** Howard Wolfson **cough**...  Anyways, I think it still gives evidence, with the mainstream media complaint, that Hillary's campaign is writing the GOPs speeches for them.  Wasn't it just the other day that Hillary and dearest Howard were complaining about the media trying to elect Obama?

Obama 08
Whats wrong with calling a man by his real full name,
especially a man running for president of the USA?
Lol. Does a name disqualify someone from running for office? Cunningham is a great example of why fear-mongering is bad for this country.

Maybe I should go look up a list of all the murderers, child rapists and thieves who have "Cunningham" in their name. Then talk about why Bill Cunningham's radio show sucks.

Another crazy right-winger shouting his mouth off. Haven’t we had enough of this the last 7 years and look where we are in this country because of it?
Get ready for more of it Barack Hussein Obama...the reprehensibles just need to scare a few million americans into thinking they would be turning the nation over to a terrorist...they can find a few million illiterates in the south and midwest to win with...
Cunningham is obviously an idiot.  No doubt his radio show has a large folowing in the Cin'ci/Kentucky area. The Klan does, too, probably, at least from what I remember of the area.  But, so what? Every fool can speak his vacuous mind in America!
John McCain needs to denounce this nonsense.
One doesn't need advance knowledge of what a bigot will say when given a microphone. I guess McWar's campaign figured that whatever he said would be helpful and they could distance himself from it later.
The campaign should take note that this sort of innuendo may backfire on them. Ask Hillary.

Hey John! No You Can't!
What is the big deal isn't hussein part of his name?

is he ashamed of it?
OK, folks, if you think using Obama's middle name is just a normal thing, I defy one of you to tell me John McCain's middle name BEFORE you google it on the internet.

Obama's middle name is going to be used in order to suggest that he is Muslim.  Which he is not.  But the Republicants never worry about truth, only about winning at all costs.

Put on your seat belts, America.  The Republicants have only just begun their path to destruction this year.
Not long ago I read an article saying that America has become the "white trash nation".  When I see people reacting to something like a name or the wearing of a ethnic costume while on a diplomatic tour, it makes me shudder. Hopefully the vast majority of us are not functioning at that level.  Lets make America a land of enlightened people. Once again, we can become a great example to the world.
You know-I don't think it's crazy to talk about his name, his muslim father, his mixed faith school because he is selling himself as a bi-racial, mulit-cultural candidate. Hussein IS a muslim name, his father was muslim, and that's a fact. Same as Hillary was raised Lutheran. It's a fact. Obama was baptised as a christian as an adult and attends a church that honors Farrakhan. That is also a fact.
If Bill Cunningham is inferring "Saddam" with each utterance of "Hussein," then it is John McCain who needs to be called to task.  Of all people, McCain should realize he is starting this bid as the underdog, with 8 years of Bush and his "politics of venom" - it's one thing to try to rally your supporters, but Senator "Straight Talk" will get smeared by this not-so-subtle character assassination, and it will be his own fault.
What's wrong with calling him by his full name?  I just cannot stand the thought of saying President Obama.  We need someone who has ideas about how to solve our problems.  BHO has not presented any ideas as of yet. Maybe he will when his "handlers" tell him what to say.  Any while I am at it, why would anyone want the endorsement of "Chappaquidick Ted" for anything.  Kennedy is the biggest joke of all time. How many elections has Mary Jo voted in since 68.
I see nothing wrong with the comments either.  Only ignorant people would use a name as a basis for someone's competent - take George as in George Washington for example; as to imply a leader, wise thinker and thoughtful as well as witty.  George Bush has demonstrated there is nothing in a name.
Mccain is nothing more than monkey boy bush all over again-older and just as stupid.

He must be doing it because we wouldn't know who he was talking about if he only said "Barack Obama". It's obvious that we all know him as "Barack Hussein Obama".

Let's start calling McCain "John Sidney McCain". That makes sense doesn't it?
I do not like this type of comment, but for those that call this typical right wing stuff, what is typical left wing stuff, what the NYT is doing to McCain, what Hillary is doing to Obama? I guarantee the criticism she has of Obama will reappear and she will have tht nerve to call it right wing mud. Watch and see.
I wonder how many times the words Hillary RODHAM Clinton have been printed or spoken?  Anyone take the speakers to task over it?
Arch Stanton (Sent Tuesday, February 26, 2008 12:21 PM)

You just show your ignorance by speaking.  Rodham is NOT her middle name. Her middle name is Diane. Rodham is her maiden name.

So, when was the last time you saw: Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton?

But that isn't the point, but you already knew that.
If that is the best McCain's supporters can come up with, then the future is bright for Obama.  Everyone knows his entire name, and it is not stopping Barack from putting this beating on the Clinton machine.
Jerry of cc you have no problems with Cunningham's statement because like him you are a rascist as  you clearly have problems with anyone who is not anglo-saxon white male to make decisions for others. Hispanics,  Muslims, Hindu's, women, mulatto's (Obama) need not apply for office. God forbid if your middle name is Adolf, the right wing slime machine, along with their enabling lap dogs like Jerry become your classic followers of hate and ignorance.
Just for the record "Hussein" means "good looking/handsome" Just in case anyone was wondering.
Hussein is just a name.  It's silly to infuse bigotry into it.  But people do--much like children at the playground.

It's odious when people intentionally draw attention to it to spur xenophobic feelings.  But we see a group of small minded people who will.

Those who revel in this behavior rarely vote Democrat if vote at all.  I think Senator Obama is tough enough to deal with this.
You people that agree it's ok to use a person's name to be divisive, should be ashamed of yourselves!

You know it's racism at its best; it also sends a horrible message to allies and enemies across the world. This is a time when we should try to repair our standing in the world, and to emphasize the man’s middle name as to say "don't vote for him because he's different" sets us back 200 years.

Those of you who are decent Americans would know that!
I think that anyone who argues that there is nothing wrong with using his middle name is completely missing that point.  Come on now!  What upsets me is WHY he is using the middle name.  He is trying to play to peoples fears.  Almost like saying, "Come on, are you REALLY gonna vote for someone with the middle name Hussein?"  We are better than that!  Those Republican  tactics will not work this year.
OBAMA 08!
It shows you there is little difference between right wing smear and what the Clinton's are doing.  They are both very scared Of Obama's polotical power.
There is nothing wrong with using a persons complete name, but if you are not saying John Sidney McCain or Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton everytime you call their name you must be trying to make a certain point.  The Bill Cunninghams are irrelevant in their comments because people believe what they want to believe and they see what they want to see and most of all God is creating another generation that is moving beyond the "fearmongering" using code language.  People may have been born at night but not last night.  The sad part is this type of fear tactic is the start because as soon as they figure out this will not work, they will ratchet up the fear tactics.
It's truly pathetic that the McCain and Clinton campaigns have resorted to this type of sleaziness.  It just goes to show you, and I hope the American people, that they stand for status quo and the same old dirty tricks politics.  No wonder they can’t even stand his speeches.  Speeches folks!!!  Since when is it a sin to make a good speech.  They can’t find anything so they to stir up voters by scaring them.  Its definitely silly season now and its so obvious.  I guess this is last stand for both McCain and Clinton to hold on to power that is surely but slowly slipping away.  Their desperation is definitely an ugly sight.
There's nothing wrong with Obama's middle name. It is a very common name in the part of the world his father comes from. What is wrong is saying it with a wink and a nod, knowing how AMERICANS react to anything that is remotely linked to Islam. It's a cheap shot. Going after Obama on the issues is one thing, playing to people's ignorance and racism is quite another.
You people that agree it's ok to use a person's name to be divisive, should be ashamed of yourselves!

So Charles W... does that principle extend to the "name" Billary?
I think the Republicans ought to stick with this hate-mongering strategy.  You go, guys!  Good luck with that!

Buncha incompetents.
John SIDNEY McCain needs to control his surrogates a little better.

I think it's cool that Barack's middle name is 'Hussein'... given that our biggest enemies and troubles are all in the Middle East, what's the one way to connect with the people of the Middle East, and turn around the disgusting hatred of America they all have?  Elect a black dude named Barack Hussein Obama, who doesn't preach about destruction and war, but of hope, prosperity, and diplomacy.  Make no mistake, he will not hesitate to bomb anyone that poses a threat to US safety, as no US president should, but the SECOND Barack Obama is pronounced the winner in November, the world will look at America a little bit better.

OBAMA '08!
John McCain is a fairly common name, why don't you right wing nuts google it and see how many McCains are incarcerated (in jail) at this time. Then get back to us and tell us if we should blame your geriatric candidate for their problems. Republicans are SO stupid especially those that have little if any confidence in the best (?) candidate the GOP could come up with. It has to be an embarrassment to you all.
Welcome to the politics of guilt by parental choice. Parents if you ever want your kids to be president some day, don't name them George, don't name them Walker, don't name them Bush, and be sure not to name them Hussien.
The reichwingnuts are currently polling to see just how far they can go with the racist and sexist stuff before getting some blowback from the electorate. Here's the problem: their candidates will stay on the safe side of that line, but the reichwing echo machine on talk radio will step over it repeatedly, and random bigots and misogynists in their base will keep saying really egregious things as they have been all along.  All of that combined will result in the most enourmous turn-off of the electorate ever.  Only the absolute kool-aid drinking crazies will stay on the reich side of the fence.  I predict an Obama landslide of unprecedented size and strength.  Keep it up, reichers, you are guaranteeing a Democratic supermajority and White House.
Sigh.  Of course there isn't anything wrong with using anyone's full name.  Just like there is nothing wrong with Obama dressing in the traditional garb of Somalia out of respect when he visits.

What's wrong is idiots like Cunningham who try to use the otherwise innocent things to try to instill fear in the voters and frighten them into thinking that one person or another might be a better candidate.

I suppose though it just goes to show that whether it be McCain, Clinton, or whoever, one has to stoop quite low to come up with attacks on Obama.  Isn't this fear mongering getting OLD already?  Can't anyone find anything wrong with Obama other than he has a scary name or he didn't wear a certain pin at a certain time?  I MEAN COME ON.
Republicans & All of America must wake up and realize that it wasn't Hussein, who attacked the United States. It was Osama Ben Laden.
Why should Obama object to people using his middle name, or seeing him dress in African Muslim cloths, or knowing that he meets regularly with a Muslim cleric in Chicago as well as his Christian pastor?  Why would he want to hide these things?
In 2008, how far have we really come in regards to the things that have traditionally divided us?

It seems that this year will be the time to answer that question definitively. We have lived through 7 years of a politics of fear. 9/11 followed by two wars and countless concessions in regard to our privacy and civil liberties. It appears the pendulum is swinging hard back the other way to a time when we believe that, as Franklin Roosevelt said, “All we have to fear, is fear itself.”

It is becoming clear that this will be the card that the Republicans will play this year. Fear for fear’s sack. It starts with the Muslim false email. Followed by the madrassa accusations. Then there was Barack's middle name. Next we have the Somali garb photo.

So who is this scaring? We need to ask ourselves what does America stand for? Do all Muslims scare us? Do names make us squeamish with fear? Does a white robe and tunic make someone a terrorist?

It is insulting, for sure, but the sad fact is that it will play with many Americans.

If you feel fear in your heart when you hear or see these things, ask yourself, “Am I really that insecure about America? Am I that insecure about my own identity? I am going to blindly be afraid without asking questions?”

It is an insult to your intelligence and what America stands for to let these things scare us.

Politics may have been a game for a long time, but that time needs to come to an end this year. 2008 is too important. Too many people have died over the last 7 years and too many American’s lives are on the line in the future.

Make a decision about the presidency based on the facts, not silly photos or the heated “Jerry Springer Show” politics of the past.

What do you really want America to stand for?
Typical good cop/bad cop rethug tactics. The smear gets out there, and then McCain gets to look "respectful" by denouncing it.
