McCain supporter plays up 'Hussein'

Posted: Tuesday, February 26, 2008 12:07 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Kelly O'Donnell
CINCINNATI, Ohio -- One of the speakers before McCain took the stage used some noteworthy language this morning.

Bill Cunningham, who I am told is a radio host here, repeatedly referred to Obama as Barack Hussein Obama -- at least three times. (Hussein is, as most know, Obama's middle name.)

Cunningham's tone was derisive on Obama's positions, and he also spoke very critically of mainstream media accusing the collective media of trying to get Democrats elected.

Rob Portman, former US Trade Rep. under President George W. Bush, followed Cunningham and lightly chided him saying, "You're out of control again." But then thanked Cunningham for supporting McCain.

Portman, who is widely rumored to be in the McCain veepstakes running, endorsed McCain this morning as well.

McCain is not on stage yet.

*** UPDATE *** Two senior McCain advisors say, "We do not agree" with the comments made by radio host, Bill Cunningham at today's event. Advisors say they had no advance knowledge of Cunningham's comments.

The campaign says it invites radio hosts to "warm up the crowd" at some events but that Cunningham has no role in the campaign.

*** UPDATE 2 *** McCain repudiates and apologizes for the comments.
Before reporters could even ask about the provocative speaker, McCain addressed the issue, saying he repudiated the comments and has respect for his Democratic opponents. McCain said the use of "Hussein" as a political jab was not appropriate.

"I never met Mr. Cunningham," McCain said, "but I will make sure nothing like that ever happens again."

McCain accepted responsibility for the speaker while also saying he had not been in the room and had not heard the comments himself. McCain said he did not know how the radio host had been invited but acknowledged there must have been some coordination with his campaign.

McCain also spoke more about his own comments yesterday that the "war will be over soon." He did not give a time for what "soon" means. He reiterated that he accepts that his political fortunes and Iraq may be intertwined. He seemed to be reacting to the print reports yesterday that he had "retracted" his comment that he'd "lose" if he failed to convince the American people that US strategy is working.

Well, that's Bill Cunnigham's deal. He likes to play on racial biases. I've heard him refer to the Senator from Illinois as Osama Obama on several occasions. Cunningham has a chain of "Willies" sports bars in the area. The guy is about as untouchable as you get in local media. He likes to instigate and stir up trouble.

As for his comments, I haven't seen the footage so I won't rush to judgement. But Obama's candidacy does bring up some interesting cultural issues. Was Cunningham merely saying his middle name or somehow in a crude way suggesting he's not like us--and possibly friendly to islanmic terrorists? Most likely, the answer depnds on which candidate you support.
It's been widely reported that the repubs are putting out a survey to see how far they can go negitive with the race card.I see that they will do and say anything to put fear into the hearts of Americans.Sounds like Hill and Johnboy have been talking.Where have these people been?Hiding under a rock? This is the way things were in the 60"s.Time to catch up or get out of the Way.These type of people need to go!    NOW
Who cares, is that Obama's name or not,why are you all getting so bent out of shape over his name. I heard William Jefferson Clinton many time does that offend anyone. Give me a break. If he is so afraid of his name maybe he shoud change it. Obama just always wants to call the race card. Barrack Hussein Obama is his name get use to it, and if you don't like the name or you are ashamed of it,, don't vote for him.
Everybody here knows what is wrong w/ using the middle name -- it is the reason in which it is used.  Those who say they see nothing wrong are either racists themselves or condone the race-baiting (or both).  It doesn't need to be explained to anyone.

Some of you are as disgraceful as Bill Cunningham.  If you can't win on the issues, try to win w/ racism
First, Obama did not name himself. He was named after his father like George Bush was. Second Barack is swahili for Blessed and America is, truly blessed!!

I have been reading blogs and it seems some of the people who claim to be conservatives sound a tad bit ignorant to think that one's given name (which none of us have control over) should be a defining factor in being the commander-in-chief. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but it's just shameful that some of these so called media and pundits think most Americans are too dumb to reject silly politics. I believe most conservatives out there are better than this and are well informed and will publicly reject such nonsense. I hope they get to speak up against this rubbish representation of them. It's a new dawn in American politics and these pundits need to watch as Americans educate themselves and rise above the crappy politics that's brought this country to this struggling point.
MCCAIN,  YOU ARE THE WINER.  the media is playing so great,  pushing for Obama so he can be beat in November, they know that Obama will never win becasue he is black and they prefer to have a white men in the white house,  that is what american people is use to. the fact is that CLinton is fighting against those machos oriented men and women and agaisnt the media. It make me have more respect for her....  GO HILLARY
I do have to say that McCain's response was entirely appropriate and he should be commended for it.  I only wish Hillary would have had the same integrity any of the number of times this sort of thing has been done by her supporters -- such as yesterday when her campaign released the photo of Obama in Kenya.
It's the same as posting pics of him in traditional Muslim garb. It's to play on America's "they hate us for our freedom" ignorance. Anything and I mean anything that sounds Arabic is shunned and feared.
For those that would disagree, look at some of the posts here. Allegations of Obama selling us out to the muslim world is just the fire saying his complete name fuels. Keep it up Republican working class, and when you're wondering where your jobs went and why is the country constantly fighting, remember at least you didn't vote for someone that's different.
Why does McCain have to apologize?

isn't hussein part of his name?

Obama once again crying over race/religion.

His wife big mouth is going ot cost big time.

is anybody getting Obama fatigue ?
Too bad McCain's middle name isn't "Adolf." Then you'd hear this "What's the big deal?" willfully ignorant bunch of circus clowns scream like stuck pigs.
To Diana Perez:

So Saddam Hussein really meant: Saddam the Beautiful..?

Comforting!

Democrats are too stupid to realize they are being set up.

Obamabots you have been punk'd :(
Hillary Riodham Clinton, William Jefferson Clinton, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Lyndon Baines Johnson, Richard Milhous Nixon, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, etetcetc. Just what makes Barack Hussein Obama so special his middle name can't be used? If he is elected he will have to use it in his oath. He has to use it in all legal documents right now. If he is that touchy about it maybe he should change it and if he is touchy about it -- why so? This campaign has become ridiculous with everyone tiptoeing around afraid of being called racist or sexist oe even seniorphobic. Get real. Stop fawning over this empty suitnamed Barack Hussein Obama.
Typical of left wing media like MSNBC and CNN to trash someone for calling Obama by his full name. The one who shoul dbe the most mad is Hillary.
Hussein if I am not misstaken means "buetiful, little boy" and Saddam was not even in power when Obama was born. So go figure a mother would name their son's middle same "buetiful, little boy". These conservative talk show host need to grow up and start talking about the issues, or they can just fade into the history books as a failed movement.
Typical right-wing tactics... let's stick to the issues please.
To all those who don't think this is a big deal, tell me the middle names of the following people:

John McCain
Mike Huckabee
Rudy Guiliani (sp)
Mitt Romney
Fred Thompson
John Edwards
Bill Richardson
Joe Biden
Chris Dodd

You can't because you don't know.  Why don't you know?  Because they don't use them.  Hillary Clinton began her campaign as Hillary Rodham Clinton, so she's fair game.  The truth is the only reason Barack's middle name became known and an issue is because conservatives brought it up and keep mentioning it in hopes of raising doubts or fears.
Someone at MSNBC / NBC News please get the video of this rant and post it. It was OUTRAGEOUS what Bill Cunningham did. He's a shock jock on WLW 700am in Cincinnati and I'm not a bit surprised that John McCain was embarrassed by what he said.
Why is Obama a member of a church that does not allow whites to be members.  It also speaks of Africa as their main concern and America second.  Do you all want a president that is focused on Africa first and America second.  Talk about racism.  Obama is supposed to represent all people if elected as president however no white members allowed in his church.  What will be next...... no white people allowed in America or at least no rights for white people or anyone else who isn't African American.
To call Barack Obama by his middle name is not, in and of itself, derisive.  It is, after all, his name.  It's when it is infused with bigotry and intended as a slur that get's people into trouble.  I applaud McCain for taking a stand.  This is something Hillary Clinton would never do.
Three words...
No Republicans Can't!
You all do know John McCain's middle name is Sidney?
Does that make him a woman?
If you liked what this DJ-Hack said, you're too far gone anyway, no impact.
Mr. Cunningham has been doing this when he is on the radio for the last 6+months and he makes no bones about how he feels, and makes many other negative, cultural remarks about Obama, and when listeners call in to object, he will begin to overtalk, rant, rave and yell. I can not believe all these people did not know who this man was, and how he always handles himself on the air-----shame on your campaign mccain-finally someone spoke up-he is defined by his dislike for the other party candiates and this just shows how the mccain bunch did not do their homework!!!!!!!!
How come the Democrats can slam conservatives and Republicans on a daily basis but as soon as someone like Bill Cunningham speaks, he loses the right of free speech? Oh that's right I forgot the same does not apply  for both parties. And for the elitist liberal, you discredit yourself for generalizing the people of the Ky/Cincy area.
fake outrage
Democrats are too stupid to realize they are being set up.

Obamabots you have been punk'd :(
****************************************************

Why is it that Republicans always, always, always have to come up with some name-calling brand during the election period. How is it that one party has a monopoly on immature, devisive rhetoric?

Clinton=slick willy, Kerry= flip-flopper, now this. Is this the leadership experience we've been hearing so much about. I suppose Obama should have started back in kindergarten.
The only reason why the jerk used his middle name is to play on you  lack on knownledge when it comes people. Just because someone may have some type of name with a Muslim meaning it does not make them a terrorist. I guess whe can associate anyone with a Irish name to the IRA over in Ireland, or maybe Polish, Austrialla,New Zeland, or any were in the UK for that matter.  wake up people the only reason why Hillary brought it up and McCain's supporter brought it up was to play on fears of the mind. I can't believe most of American can be this stupid I mean really
Those with a memory for minutiae will recall the repeated invocation "George ... Herbert ... Walker ... Bush" ...
Mr. Cunningham refers to John McCain as "John Wayne McCain".....which is a good reference to an iconic and beloved movie star, John Wayne.  There are Democratic and Republican supporters alike who go over the top in their enthusiasm for their candidate. Different strokes for different folks!
After the scared of everything republicans say Hussein
a few times they will start in with the teror alerts that we have not seen since the last election.
Not this time you no governing, can't run a war, screw up the economy, scare the idiots among us Republicans, not this time.  The republican message has run it's pathetic course.  Say hello to my little friend, President Barrack Hussein Obama!!!!!
For everyone who knows nothing more than what they read here on the MSNBC report.

Throughout his radio career, Bill Cunningham has often referred to presidents (and candidates) by their full name.  He would say Richard Milhouse Nixon, Ronald Wilson Reagan, William Jefferson Clinton, George Walker Bush, etc...  He called him Barack Hussein Obama - his full name.

He just provided further proof that you can't even say Obama's full name without taking heat.  I like the guy and his pep rally's have a lot of people interested in politics that haven't felt any connection in the past, maybe ever.  He might be a good president, though I disagree with many of his positions and will likely not vote for him.  But Barack Obama is not perfect and is not above criticism or confrontation.

And to those who think that the midwest is a bunch of xenophobic and racist rubes.  Please leave the coasts!  Travel a bit!  Your man Obama has swept racist middle America, a place that will NEVER vote for a man of color.  Hillary is holding strong in the "enlightened" territories of Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, and California.  Sorry that your closed-minded biases were incorrect.
If all the Republicans can do to win this election is imply someone's name is a problem - fear-mongering - they will lose by an even bigger landslide. And if they do it now, it'll be such old news by the election they'll be forced to run a real campaign. So I don't have a problem with it, it's akin to shooting themselves in the foot.
Looks like McCain has more class than Hillary does. He may have sold out a number of his principles to run for the presidency, but damned if he isn't still a class act. Finally, a clean presidential race!
Of course, McCain would only have the old last century's news to use against Hillary which is so old, no one wants to hear it anymore....thus, she is more electable..
The problem is that they are trying to connect his middle to something negative (terrorist). If you cant see that you have serious issues in common sense. Its a low jab in politics. I hope Barack is better to look the other way.
McCain's campaign was fully in control of that event and could have cut the loud mouth short, but they didn't.

McCain's "oh, did I get caught with my hand near the cookie jar again" response doesn't cut it.
Ok, lets get this straight. Obama says he was never a muslem, even though he was raised a muslem in Indonesia for 10 years. But lets take him at his word on that. The question is, Why would his parents give him a muslem middle name if he wasnt born a muslem?

And his racist comments in the SC debate make me sick. I was deeply offended when he said. "I would have to see the man dance before I could tell you if he was a BROTHER." When asked if Bill Clinton was black. So if you cant dance your just a stupid white boy? If a Republican had said something like that their career would be over.
Why is it that when we elect a new president, that we can't also elect a new congress to go with it. I think congress should have the same term limitations as the president.
