A tense night comes to an end

Posted: Tuesday, February 26, 2008 10:38 PM by Chuck Todd

From NBC's Chuck Todd
Phew, the entire debate had a very tense feel; a combination of two very competitive Democratic candidates and two very tough questioners. Both candidates were put on the spot and survived. Clinton came armed with her own material, from hits on Obama's record and tried to keep Obama on the defensive, but again he survived. Obama probably had more negative YouTube moments than Clinton, because of the initial waffle on the Farrakhan answer (though he did clean it up pretty well) and his look to Clinton to answer the Russia question first. It was clear Obama didn't want first dibs on that question; Neither candidate seemed comfortable enough to say Dmitry Medvedev's name but Clinton tried, Obama didn't even do that.

Overall, it's hard to see this debate as changing the trajectory of this race; Obama was a bit more defensive tonight than last week and had more stumbles tonight than in more recent encounters. Clinton really flubbed that "SNL" line and she did so early so it made it into a bunch of writeups; she should have saved it until it was more appropriate. It was a contentious debate, but civil; and both will probably be better nominees for it.

It's hard to pick a winner; Clinton was more prepared but Obama survived and that's probably the name of the game for him at this late date in the campaign.

We'll have more thoughts later but for now, good night from Cleveland.

Hillary Clinton is just not believable!
When is there ever going to be a debate on airwave TV, not cable.  I tried getting it online, but all I ever got was the word "buffering" and about a 2 second blurb every 5 minutes.
So get a national debate on regular TV for us poor folks to see.
Obama counter-punched very well and defused everything Clinton tried to toss at him.  Clinton's whines about the debate format was peevish, and her SNL joke got only groans from the audience.

America is sick to death of petty, bloodsport politics where soundbytes and low jokes are the weapons of choice.  We want unification, motivation, and a desire to do better by ourselves and our children.
I want to echo what Mike from Boston said because I think it is important:
Obama allowed Clinton to go first on the Russia question because it was her turn to answer. He had just finished a lengthy response about his support from non-democrats. Don't read into it too much, Chuck.
Thank you Tim Russert for FINALLY calling Obama
on his anti-semitic church affiliation--a church that just gave an award to Farrakhan. Obama looked like a deer caught in the headlights on that one. And on Russia? He didn't have a clue. Hillary might have pushed a bit at the beginning, but thank god she did. Maybe the american public will start to see what a charlatan Obama is.
I was disappointed that neither Obama nor Clinton answered the last inquiry from Brian Williams regarding what one question their opponent should have to answer in Ohio and Texas.  As an independent, I would ask both candidates how they plan to pay for the many programs that they have proposed to improve life in America.
It was definitely a tense night. I would say that Hillary came in like an attack dog so desperate for survival. Obama should have quickly distanced himself from the F. guy, but he denounced him (which is better than rejecting, because I'd believe Obama meant to disapprove this guy's stance but accept him as an American, as a human being; to reject someone who is not overly bigoted like the talk radio hosts is like rejecting your friend for his soft views).
Obama seemed cool, while Hillary looked like she was ready at every turn to bash as hard as she can, because she realizes she must do something to change the trajectory ... Hillary lied (AGAIN) on Obama going to bomb Pakistian, while Obama twisted the fact by saying all experts (if I heard him corrctly) view his health care plan favorably.
Overall, tense night. I would say both won.
I think both candidates showed some strengths and a few weaknesses.  But their typical strengths and weaknesses, nothing new.  Lots of battle fatigue by all parties (including this viewer).

I continue to be wary of some real inconsistencies in Hillary Clinton's whole approach to this campaign...one day she's this way, the next day, another way.  Her campaign has been horrible even though I think she has a lot of strengths.  To me, that's scary.  How can she run the country if she can't lead her campaign.  Obama has been considerably more consistent and has an amazing learning curve.

She is stronger on some factual aspects to foreign policy but I see no indication that this leads to better governing (what with foreign policy advisors and with Obama's learning curve).

The denounce, renounce, reject thing was just ridiculous.  It is clear that Obama had nothing to do with Farrakhan's announcement (talk about uninvited, just like Nader).

And she looked wacko on the first question thing.  What the heck!  He is cool under fire.

Wonder if it changed anyone's opinions?  Not mine.

Great blogging by you all, I agree with the previous poster on that.

Pro-Clinton?  I think not.  You surely have not been watching MSNBC OR CNN who have panel discussions that all support Obama.  It is incredible - the unabashed support and promotion he gets from them.  However, I will say, FINALLY, they asked him some tough questions tonight - the first time after 20 debates.  It probably had everything to do with news media humiliation from the SNL skit.  I guarantee you CNN (which was the network used in the skit)has STILL not shown the Tina Feye skit(News Cast segment) or the 'Debate'skit.  Like the other networks, CNN showed the Huckelbee skit, but not the other two.  For that person who did not see it, just google SNL-it's fabulous and could not be more on target.
HILLARY WON HUGE TONIGHT!!  She kicked Obama to the curb as usual and was very quick on her feet!  Good job, Hillary!

We don't need a preacher, we need a president!
GO HILLARY '08!!!
We all know that Hillary won the debate(s). So far that has not gotten her anything and you begin to wonder when the American people will wake up and realize that she is by far the best candidate we democrats have. Of course, as usual we will go ahead and nominate someone less qualified by whatever means you care to use except the gift of the gab and the power of persuasion. As a result, come November 5th, we will once again bemoan the fact that we lost the White House and so-and-so would have done so much better.
You Clinton supporters are delusional as is Chuck Todd. Barack was as cool as the other side of the pillow! Get real Charles, you are obviously pro-Clinton
The SNL quote and whining at the beggining showed how hard it is for Hillary to keep her temper in check. Hillary's message tonight was that she is a fighter -- well, people are tired of fighting and looking for someone who will unite -- which is why obama's momentum can't be stopped. He just needed to come out unscathed and she did. I think the change in message for HC is too little too late. I was on the fence about her and Obama around the time of the SC primaries...after listening to Obama after his win in Iowa and seeing and hearing the tactics from the clintons during the SC primary -- I've been pro-obama ever since. Hillary has too much ground to make up -- the obama campaign -- is a movement -- not just a political campaign...and can't really be stopped.
Hillary maintained the offensive, but it was Obama who spoke the truth. Today's winners were Barack Obama, Senator Chris Dodd, and America. The biggest winner was Chris Dodd. He showed it was possible to loose the nomination and still have the character to do the right thing, in the interest of all of us. Hillary should take notice.
The questions aimed at Senator Clinton were much more antagonistic than the kid glove treatment given Obama. She was also cut off several times (not including the commercial break) while he was allowed to go on and on and on . . .
I thought Clinton came off as more competent and knowledgeable throughout. She made me feel that she would fight for us and make our lives better.
What's the "SNL" line, somebody please? I don't know what this means.
Clinton's first 30 minutes was very weak. Her arguments about the negative flyers sounded very personal and petty, while Obama's comments focused on the substance of policy. She sounded offended but wasn't persuasive in winning her argument that her health care approach is superior. Obama didn't win that argument, either, but he maintained objectivity and honesty. I really thought the rest of the debate was owned by Obama. He was strong and persuasive by providing substance to his actions and policies. Clinton threw out her kitchen sink barbs and it was some stinky garbage and had no basis in truth.
I was disappointed in Tim Russet.  In 2002 Obama did say in his speech , he was against the war.  But in 2004 after giving Kerry and other democrats a pass for voting for the wall and after his Democratic convention speech, when asked by a New york Times reporter, how would he have voted if in the senate at the time and he (Obama) stated" What would I have done? I don't know."  Do your homework Tim. abcnews.go.com Article: Analysis: Obama a "courageous leader?
I disagree.
As a neutral observer it is my feeling that Sen. clinton looked strident, hostile and defensive. Obama came aross as confident, strong and gracious.
on the issues he countered her every maneuver. and o the Farakhan question she showed herself to a common grasping politician.
Obama won again.  Clinton dances around questions she does not want to answer. She even got angry when Tim called her out on a lie about her passed stance on NAFTA. Obama has alot more experience than he is given credit for. I feel her cheap shots are costing her big. Plus, any educated person knows that the word "denounce" is a public "rejection" of something not wanted.
Clinton is a very strong women and that scares people. Because she right, it would give this county a different perspective, a different view on leadership and unification of our country. If we truly want change, I believe she is the women for the job.
She was asked the Putin successor question first.  Was he supposed to look away?   I thought he carried the foreign policy part of the debate by noting his stance on Pakistan.

On a slightly different note, I thought that H. Clinton didn't look particularly Presidential with her quick temper leading her to constantly interrupt and talk over people. When trying to laud one’s ability to listen to the needs of the people, it helps to take the time to show that one is capable of  listening.

Obama won this hands down.  Hillary sounded petty and continued switching between the 10 personalities that have surfaced during this campaign.  I don't trust any of the versions of her that her camp has created.  Obama proved yet again that he is the candidate of speeches AND solutions.  He can inspire AND act on behalf of the best interests of the American people.  This is not an either/or choice.  It's a both/and.  He made it clear tonight, and he will be the next president.

(And by the way, someone tell this woman that voting to invade Iraq and voting to fund the troops once the mistake had been made are DIFFERENT.  This does not mean Obama ever supported the war, and frankly voters are smart enough to see that despite her continued allegations.)
I'll admit that I have been an Obama supporter for a long time, but I think that any unbiased observer would have to recognize that this was a terrible night for Clinton.

This was the last time that anybody could take her seriously as a candidate.   "Why do I get the first question all the time?"   Brian Williams patiently explaining to her that they had to take a commercial and station ID break.   Hillary going on endlessly about healthcare without saying anything at all of substance.  Her extremely lame defense about releasing her income tax forms (Oh, I'll get around to it maybe.)   Trying to exploit racial issues between Jews and African/Americans (it was in poor taste of MSNBC to even raise the Farakan issue, but she had to jump in with her two cents.)

And the list goes on.   I have always felt that she was an amateur who was there just because of her last name, and tonight once again proved it.

After listening to all the debates, the one tonight left me with the thought that all citizens yet to vote have to decide is whether they want a 'fighter' or 'uniter' representing your interests?
Sharon, Houston, TX (Sent Tuesday, February 26, 2008 11:03 PM)

Saturday Night Live, Sharon. They did a debate skit last Saturday that satired the last debate. YouTube it.
This year the "Giant Sucking Sound" isn't NAFTA.  It's the sound of Hillary Clinton finally going down the toilet for good.
It was totally Hillary's night, she won the debate.
STOP !!! We have 2 great canidates the only ? is who can beat the Rep. Will lack of experience be easier to overcome then 12 years of skeletons and flip flopping. The National polls are providing the answers. President Bush also gave us the answer when he said he hopes Clinton is the nominee. The republicans are frayed and nominating ANY Clinton unites them again and causes the Democrates to snatch Defeat out of the JAWS of Victory by nominating ANOTHER un-electable candidate.
This presidential election year is a joke! No one can say anything about Obama or they'll be noted as being critical or racist. Obama's selling nothing but people are continuing to sign up. It is obvious from this debate that Clinton knows her stuff and Obama doesn't. Why are all of you people so concerned with who's supporting her? What about Obama's land dealings? That's been swept under the rug and away from the aura of Obama. She's tough, she won't take crap and she'll move this country into the right direction. Obama will "unite"? How?
The "inconvenient truth" is that hardly anyone in these debates is really addressing what is going on with the environment. Maybe most Americans don't realize it but our environment's rapid decline will affect us just as much as health care and the economy.
Also, Hillary was upset about misleading mailings. I received a nasty one from Clinton the day before the N.H. primary stating that Obama doesn't stand for a woman's right to choose. It evolked fear and was very misleading.
I've been very troubled by the negative campaign that Senator Clinton has increasingly engaged in over the last several weeks. (Fortunately, she does dial it down somewhat during the debates.)

While a certain level of aggressive tactics are to be expected in a spirited campaign, she and her campaign have crossed the line into mudslinging, innuendo and identity politics over the last several weeks. In doing so, her slash and burn, scorched earth campaign is severely damaging the Democratic party. Democrats need to remember the bigger objective; winning on November 4th. We do that with coalition, not division.
Let's get real-- I am (and perhaps was) a HRC supporter BUT this debate was a clear strong point for Obama.  I must say that he did look and sound like a President that I could support.  I am now wavering between the two when I was for HRC.  The negativity, the shrewdness and the issue of tax returns really worry me with HRC.  I don't know
"NO WINNER"?  To say there was 'no winner' someone had to be watching a different debate than I was.  Hillary, at the least, was a looser and looked bad in her attempts to discredit Barack.  He in the mean time maintained his poise, deflected her desperate arrows and even likely looked 'presidential'.  At times I even felt sorry for her but that can't be a substitute for trust, which she fails to justify.  No, there definitely was a winner and justifiably so.
I'm disgusted that the network and cable news media have taken over the debates at all. These are not REAL debates.
It's too bad the debate moderators haven't stuck to POLICY questions and limited the response and rebuttal times strictly.I'm tired of "Gotcha!" questions and hyping the debates like they were sporting events. Chris Matthews (who I like, by the way) even laughed and made the sports comparison.Real good ole boy stuff. He said he didn't understand why Hillary Clinton asked why she was frequently asked the questions first (I think, as a woman "of a certain age" I understood her question and its implications) and said, in sports, you ALWAYS want to be first. Har. Har. Har.Is that what these debates are: hyped (endlessly) SPORTING events in which the winners are awarded points by the judges (the pundits) in case there isn't a "knockout punch"? Gee, I guess I'm naive; I thought the debates were supposed to inform the voting public about the candidates' views on the ISSUES! (not tell us what he-said-she-said; not describe who-wrote-and-signed-what two years ago; not ask who did or didn't use a photo; not show us who doesn't know how to pronounce/recall a Russian leader's name; not parse whether someone "denounces" or "rejects" a hatemonger's support)If I want all that hype and manipulation, I can look at the candidates' websites or listen to the talk shows. (which I do when I want slanted viewpoints and want to get "rah-rah", feel-good moments about my candidate and pans of my candidate's opponent) But, of course, if the moderators stuck to a strict issues-only format with time limits, that might be boring and their networks probably wouldn't grab a big market share. And afterall, voting public, that's the name of the game. Mabye we should stop watching faux debates(?).Maybe we get what we deserve. Hmmmm. Maybe the enemy is indeed, us.
i think media gave more time to obama to clarify his positions, not enough time to clinton for rebuttals, media stopped hillary for rebuttal due to tc commercial break, but didnot come back to her on her view on health care. during foreign policy questions and her positions on ethics and health she clarified her positions. obama simply agrees with hillary when he does not have grasp on questions, he agrees on hillary then modiifies the answer for his advantage.
Look this video and see the reality of this country if OBAMA is the president of USA....

Clinton faired better in the second half of the debate. I agree that her SNL comment came out too early and I did see it noted in several early articles mid-debate. However, her attitude and behavior in the early part of the debate was extremely defensive - from her stance on her healthcare plan to her 12-year-old-esque complaint about getting questions first - she looked like she was on her last, desperate campaign straw. In her defense, it's hard to compete and debate against someone like Obama who isn't afraid to be congenial and agree where he does agree. This race is not her husband's politics.
Well done to those electors who judge the Dem. presidential candidates objectively.Remember, America is a super-power country and still is despite the financial crisis. You need the candidate who is more experienced in dealing  with foreign policies. As to national issues, you cannot cure illness by mere words, you cannot quench hunger by feeding words into hungry mouths.
What debate did you watch?  I was worried for Obama but I thought the point where she told Tim Russert on Iraq that she wasn't going to deal in hypotheticals to Obama's "as commander in chief, I would do whatever is necessary to protect American interests" was the trump line of the night.  For me, I couldn't hear anything else that she said.  And I actually wanted her to do well.  She just seemed petty to me last night.  Like she wanted people to feel sorry for her that she's not getting a pass for losing the last 11 contests.

Like so many others, politics has never impressed me very much, falling victim to the belief that my vote really did not matter.  Watching the dabtes over the past several months, I have found a new sense of hope that this country will be a better place with the right leadership.  "Obamican".....there's the new catch phrase for all of those who, like my huisband and I, will vote for Barack Obama in the general election, even as registered Republicans.  We are looking forward, not back!!
I DON'T KNOW WHAT DEBATE THOSE CLINTON FANS ARE WATCHING. THEY SAID THE SAME THING ABOUT THE LAST DEBATE. OBAMA JUST LOOKS FOR PRESIDENTIAL AND ACTS MORE PRESIDENTIAL. THE SNL THING WAS ONCE AGAIN A WHINE FROM  THE CLINTONS. THEY HAVE SOME NERVE TALKING ABOUT NEGATIVE ADS. IF HILLARY WINS (I DOUBT) SHE WILL ONLY UNITE THE REPUBLICANS. SO THOSE OF YOU ON THE FENCE...REMEMBER THAT ALL REPUBLICANS ARE ROOTING FOR HILLARY..SO THAT THEY COULD UNITE. I DON'T SEE HOW SHE CAN COUNT THE 8 YEARS AS FIRST LADY AS EXPERIENCE..SEEMS A BIT UNFAIR. SHE HAD NO OFFICIAL JOB IN HER HUSBANDS ADMINISTRATION, AND THE ONE ASSIGNMENT SHE WAS GIVEN, TO BRING HEALTHCARE TO ALL, SHE COULDN'T GET IT DONE. SHE HAS NO EXCUSE FOR THAT BECAUSE SHE HAD A DEMOCRATIC HOUSE, SENATE AND PRESIDENT TO PASS IT. AS FOR BEING STRONGER AND MORE EXPERIENCE..WHERE'S THE PROOF? YOU CAN HAVE IT BOTH WAYS..TAKE CREDIT FOR GOOD THINGS THAT HAPPENED AND BLAME EVERYONE ELSE FOR THE BAD THINGS THAT HAPPENED.

IF HILLARY WINS..DEMOCRATS WILL LOOSE IN NOV. GUARANTEE!

I believe Obama was the clean winner last night.

Clinton seemed as if she was hysterically pushing the fact that she is a fighter.  Unfortunately, I don't happen to believe that we need a fighter in the Whitehouse.  We've had almost 24 years of division, we certainly don't need another 8.

Did anyone happen to catch what Clinton said when asked why she wasn't able to produce the 250,000 jobs she promised in NY?  She said "well I was counting on a democrat in the Whitehouse and a democratic majority"  If that doesn't tell you something, I'm not sure what will.  It made it clear to me that Clinton is incapable of crossing party lines to get anything done, it tells me that unless she's dealing with people who think the same, she'll fight until she gets her way.  SOUND FAMILIAR?  MY WAY OR THE HIGHWAY.....

Another important aspect of her campaign to think about, she has surrounded herself with loyalists who have been in the Clinton circle for decades.  She has placed loyality over knowledge and her campagin has been a complete failure because of it.  If you ask me, I think she was afraid of letting outsiders into her secret circle for fear that Clinton history secrets might surface.

Hill, depart this race gracefully, you still have a wonderful political career ahead of you.  Don't ruin the party just because you think you're a fighter.

I have certain insight into the personality of Mrs. Clinton, you see I am a year younger and I'm born on the same day as Hillary.  I too was a fighter until I realized that life was much better catching flies with honey.  There is a difference between a strong woman and a fighter.  People respond to a strong woman, but run the other way when a female fighter approaches.

Obama has my vote!  I feel in my heart that he'll bring not only this country together again, he'll make the world a much better place to live in.

womanincoubt - I urge you to go to barackobama.com and familiarize yourself with the position papers there. They address Sen. Obama's stand on the issues we confront. Also, look at the tone of his campaign. When you compare the substance of these candidates, you will be able to make a truly informed decision. Thank you for being a concerned citizen. Happy boting!
CHALK UP ANOTHER MASTERFUL DISPLAY OF INFORMATION, INSIGHT, AND UNFLAPPABILITY FOR THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES...BARAK OBAMA.  Clinton, as her campaign has displayed for weeks, looked desperate to throw the knockout punch.  However, Obama is as good a debater and candidate as Ali was a fighter.  Lean away, counter, counter, dance, float, whack, whack--take that left--dance, float, POP--take that straight right.  Whan a glancing blow excited the crowd (AND ALL OF YOU OMNICIENT PUNDITS) Obama just clinched and shook his head "no" to the crowd.  OBAMA (to use a hackneyed word) "clearly" won the debate.
Clinton came off like a growling old dog! She was not calm at all, jumped in while Obama was still speaking, very rude! Yeah, really, what about the tax returns? Same old, same old with the Clintons. Is exactly what happened when Bill Clinton revealed his tax returns, after his nomination was sealed. That is how we learned about the $10,000 ("investments"in comodities) that returned them $100,000 within not even a year! Something not even comodities trades have been able to copy!Smells, does it not?  Clinton, go away, GO AWAY!!!

I read all of the comments thus far and am surprised that some people thought Hillary won the debate.  This is just wishful thinking for those in support of a failing campaign.

Obama won hands down.  He was poised and presidential throughout the 90 minute debate.  I was very glad he brought up the issue about the bankruptcy bill (which he voted against).  Hillary voted for this bill and then tries to tell Ohio voters how she is looking out for them. My daughter is a bankruptcy attorney and thanks to the foreclosure crisis as well as loss of jobs and healthcare in this state, she has more bankruptcy clients than she can see in a day. Sadly, the new bankruptcy bill puts an even greater burden on the people of this state and Americans in general who are struggling to just get by.

Barack Obama will be the change needed in Ohio as well as America.
