More Obama v. McCain

Posted: Wednesday, February 27, 2008 1:17 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From Mark Hudspeth and Aswini Anburajan
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Has the general election already started?

Obama, with the backdrop of a roaring crowd of thousands behind him at Ohio State University lit into McCain's comments earlier today that he didn't know that "al Qaeda IS in Iraq."

Obama referenced last night's debate in Cleveland and explained Russert's hypothetical question on whether he would send troops back into Iraq to strike al Qaeda.

"I said, well I would always reserve the right to go in and strike against al Qaeda if they were in Iraq," Obama said. "So, you know, this is how politics works. McCain thought that he could make a clever point by saying, 'Well, let me give you some news Barack, al Qaeda IS in Iraq,' like I wasn't reading the papers. Like I didn't know what was going on."

Obama went on to lay the blame for terrorist activity in Iraq on McCain's shoulders. "But I have some news for John McCain," Obama said, "and that was that there's no such thing as al Qaeda in Iraq until George Bush and John McCain decided to invade Iraq!"

He added: "I've gone some news for John McCain: He took us into a war, along with George Bush, that should have never been authorized and never been waged. They took their eye off the people who were responsible for 9/11, and that would be al Qaeda in Afghanistan that is stronger now than anytime since 2001."

"I've been paying attention John McCain! That's the news," Obama roared into the mic so loudly that he was barely intelligible. The crowd of college students screamed encouragingly.

"So John McCain may like to say he wants to follow Osama bin Laden to the gates of Hell," Obama said, "but so far all he's done is follow George Bush into a misguided war in Iraq that's cost us thousands of lives and billions of dollars."

Obama went on to promise to end the war in Iraq and take on al Qaeda in Afghanistan, repeating, "That's the news John McCain!" over and over again. And repeating a refrain that has come to be his signature line of attack against the 71-year-old senator, Obama told the crowd that McCain represents "the politics of yesterday," while he promised that he represents "the party of tomorrow."

Do not at all under estimate OBAMA and mistake his humility for cowardise. Fasten your seat belts folks coz this will be a rough ride and youth and a fresh brand of politics will prevail.
Farakhaan for vice president!
Mac just got owned!!!
I just came home from this Obama event at The Ohio State University - it was awsome hearing him go after McCain.  Hope Mongers Unite!
I'm an American living overseas. Our country is disliked and hated around the world.  I travel and hear comments from people all around the world that have lost respect for us. Our economy is weak, and the US dollar is sinking.  The idea that there are some of you out there that want tp pepetuate this by electing a clone of Bush is just astonishing. I pray that the next President is Senator Obama.
live by the racial sword and die by the racial sword - race riots agianst Farakhaan and obama are on the wayv - yall get ready
Or we could strike the strikers, who obviously do not care about striking the right tone in strikes!  I mean those who are being struck are supposed to be struck for striking us!

Uhm yeah . . . What are you saying again?

I think Mike = Rumsfeld!  LOL
One of your earlier short articles on this subject indicated that Obama has plans to pursue AQ into Pakistan, something conveniently left out here.  How can we listen to what he has to say when you edit out some very important parts?  The implication of the U.S. military going into Pakistan could be a new, wider war.  Is this what the Democrats want; their own war?  Obama seems to shoot from the hip.  While McCain would probably like to pursue AQ into Pakistan, I would hope he would qualify this desire by saying he would get the approval and cooperation of the Pakistan government, a country that incidentally possesses nuclear weapons.  Obama has this "holier than thou" attitude about Iraq that he uses to paint everyone who was in the government back when Bush started the war.  No one disputes that Bush started the war under false pretenses, but it's history, so get over it.
I'm sure Barack will do about Iraq the same as Nancy Pelosi and all the senators that were elected 2 years ago.  Absolutely nothing!  They ALL know we can't just pull out but as long as it gets votes...we'll say it!

McCain really stuck it to Obama.

Schoolboy Obama still hasn't expalained how he'll deal with Al Quida in Iraq. Obama's "rapid response" is too cute by half. He was playing to the crowd.

I think that both of these men have some good and bad stuff about them. I also think that John McCain is a war guy and we have to be very careful about that. Because we can't just keep shelling out all of this money for this war and not seeng any results. I was actually not born at the beginning of the Viet Nam war I was born during it and I was just wondering after 12 years and billions of dollars what was the out come of that. I do believe that if we don't learn from past mistakes we are doomed to repeat them.

I do believe that Mr. Obama has been underestimated by his opponents. And as far as his church goes he is not the pastor of that church he is a member and how many of you all's pastors have said things in praise about someone that you don't necessarily agree with. He has now denounced and rejected that statement what more do you want the man to do. Let's not let the media have us focus on silly things and so that we can make them stick to the issues.
I would be embarassed to be a Republican right now. This is the best McCain can do? FINALLY a Democrat who will stand up to the Republican fear machine.

My mother and father are lifelong Republicans and they are wholeheartedly opposed to this war. If McCain is planning on running his whole campaign on the war he is going to go down in flames. 60% disapproval of the war.

And thats before Obama even attempts to attack him on the economy which he said himself he knows "very little" about. Embarassing.

The polls look close now, but thats because Obama and Clinton are engaged in a super tight battle. Once he emerges in March the whole tone of this thing is going to change. Mark my words. McCain is the worst possible choice. Now if only the media would stop giving him a free pass.

I'm finally proud to be a Democrat who isn't afraid of the Republican fear/smear machine.
this is just another case of the media ignoring Clinton ---didn't anyone see the SNL scene about that?  Clinton is the best person for the job although the biased media gives her far less coverage than Obama
If you think Obama has to worry, then what abt Sen Mccain? He's got an alleged scandal to worry abt, not to mention lobbist after lobbist, and then his campaing financing issue; and he's not even the official nominee yet!!! ANd...oh yeah, he's not conservative enough. So it seems like he's in a battle with himself. Plus, when is he going to release his medical records??? I mean he hadn't done it since 8 yrs ago.
Obama is correct, there were no al Qaeda in Iraq until well after Bush invaded and destabilized the entire middle east. The fight was in Afghanistan, but Bush jr. wanted revenge on Saddam for plotting to have Bush senior assassinated over 'Desert Storm. The truth is the only mission that has been accomplished thus far is that of Bin Laden. He and a few dozen renegades set out to kill Americans and deal a blow to Americas economy, and president Bush has played right into his hands. Since 9/11 another 4000 Americans have benn killed, 30,000 have benn wounded, thousands of families have been torn apart and seven hundred billion dollars have been spent on the war while poor children in America go without health care, Katrina victims are abandoned and delapedated briges are falling. There is no possibility of victory in Iraq, the best that can happen is Bush and republicans can save face by rebuilding Iraq to its prewar state. The cause in Iraq does not warrent anymore American lives or money, it is time to invest in America and save an economy that has taken a back seat to Bush's war. It is time to act like adults, acknowledge our mistake and bring our soldiers home to their families.
Obama is a weak, weak, weak man and candidate.
Let's get ready to RUMBLE!!!!!!!!  Hillary please drop out on March 6th, for the good of the Democratic Party.
Well said Barack. I think McCain is delusional to think Al queda was in Iraq prior to the invasion. The facts are not at McCain's back, in fact, McCain got all fact screwed up.

Al Queda was only based in Syria, Lebanon, and Afghanistan prior to the invasion However, since the invasion of Iraq; Al Queda has stretched from these three countries to Iraq.

Obama need to hit McCain and Hillary on this issue. They both took their eyes off the ball and they must pay for their strategic blunder.
Flip Flopping Obama, wasn't he the one preaching before that the Republican Party was the party of ideas? It sure worked for his advantage to gain points from the Republican while in the primaries, now they are not the party of ideas. Now they are old politics according to Obama. Wasn't Obama against getting money from unions for campaings when Edwards was getting the support and money from them? And now what's his stand? Very happy i am sure and of course not against the fact that they are injecting millions of dollars in ads supporting him. Hmmmmmm what will he say about the Americans voters if he wins the elections? I knew i was gonna win at all cost!
If McCain gets this job, it will only be a matter of time before he starts to tell you that Al Qaeda is also in Viet Nam and Cambodia and that his military machine needs to go there and get them.

The follow up to that will be the news that Al Qaeda is in your living room and under your bed and in your closet and as Mr McCain has stated, he will follow this boogeyman to the gates of yes, you get the picture don't you. Where exactly is hell anyway that you can go there with missiles and guns and smart technology and eradicate the evil ones?

Witness the rise of Radical American Fundamentalist Dogma.

Be Careful what you wish for. You just might get it.

Vote smart, your child's life depends on it.
people get off the Farakhan train, that's not going to work either. You can't place blame to Obama for who his pastor befriends. I have been a 30+ year member of the same church and there are many individuals that have passed through there that I have not liked and disagreed with.  Don't be silly and naive enough to start trying to align him with Farakhan. Obama is solid as a rock! Just as he was last night. Just as he has been since he decided to run for the presidency.

And again I say.....OBAMA 08!!!!!
Barack's position on attacking any known Al-Queda site in any country, including Pakistan, without permission, was knocked by Billary and McCain. Bush recently validated Barack's position. Case closed on this point. Don't those people know who they're dealing with? Do they realize how brilliant a guy needs to be to become editor-in-chief of the Harvard Law Review? We've never seen such a bright light in politics because such guys/gals always go for the big bucks in white-shoe law firms.
Clinton is a broken record of constatnt cramming down your throat, with the attitude she's gonna show you who's boss, regardless if others have an opinion or not. I'm not gonna miss her. Obama just takes it in & lets it slide, & i like that, He doesn't lower himself to her standards, whining, crying, dirty politics. So when it's Obama/McCain is will be the same. And Obama will hold his own, again.
This should be an interesting debate... An American hero, a POW, man of the the Naval Academy v the Poster Boy for the Code Pinkos Anti War left.

Bring it on, you Marxists!
Can we just all get along?
"I said, well I would always reserve the right to go in and strike against al Qaeda if they were in Iraq," Obama said.

STOP RIGHT THERE!  Do people realize what Obama is saying?  Last night at the debate, he was asked if US withdrew from Iraq and then we learned that al Qaeda was there, would he as commander-in-chief go back into Iraq?  According to Obama's statements, yes, he would.  I am no fan of McCain, but I do see McCain's point--he is saying well, if you believe it's justified for US to go back into Iraq because of al Qaeda's presence, why would you leave Iraq while al Gaeda is there?  It does seem illogical.

Also, I worry about Obama's repeated statements regarding his desire to fight al Qaeda where they are--which he believes to be in Afghanistan and Pakistan.  Does Obama want to end the war in Iraq or just move it to other locations, or does he only "talk big" about going after al Qaeda so he will appeal to a certain block of voters?

And, finally, along these lines, during the debate last night, Obama seemed to be suggesting if Kosovo were invaded, after seeking an international coalition (sound familiar?), the US might just have to engage in some fighting in Kosovo.

To my thinking, Obama's views on international affairs seem naive and not particularly thoughtful.

If he's the nominee, he is going to need a lot of educating/coaching on international affairs to be a match for McCain.  I suppose he's bright "enough," to borrow a phrase he used on Hillary.
Interesting that those who support Obama tend to have evidence, logic and well-considered points to make, while those who oppose him have only hysteria, xenophobia and lies.  At least they tend to write like third-graders...
President Obama....sounds good!...is going to clean up the corrupt mess the Republicans have wallowed in for 8 years. We need to vote out as many Republican senators as possible..get some young, forward thinking replacements who will work for the country and not just for themselves.
AQ was in Iraq before the invasion.  Zarqawi moved his operations there afater 9/11 and its been well documented.  On the danger posed by Iraq, here's what David Kay had to say to NBC:

"I think Baghdad was actually becoming more dangerous in the last two years than even we realized.  Saddam was not controlling the society any longer. In the marketplace of terrorism and of WMD, Iraq well could have been that supplier if the war had not intervened."
I gather John Doe is too silly to know his name after that comment he made about Obama being a member of a black church (the last time I checked he was black) & The Nation Of Islams Minister..Obama has already  denounced & rejected him, what else do you want!  Get a life John Doe!
Remenber just a short eight years ago George Bush was the savior of the world. so now that he has failed should we elect another good looking young man who will spend a large amount of his first term learning how to deal with some pretty smart and evil leaders. Also why did Mitt Romney have to explain his religion numerous times and Barack is excused from that Hmmm I wonder
This is just too weird!  First off I AM Not A Racist.  But there seems to be a double standard here.  If a white canadiate for President belonged to a Church that was ran by the KKK and preached Hate like The nation of islam does that person would be roasted over an open fire.  But for Obama it must be okay.  I'm not sure I understand this but I think I'll vote for someone else.  I just wish the Newsies would take off the gloves and treat Obama the same as they do other canadiates.

BAGHDAD - U.S.-backed Sunni volunteer forces, which have played a vital role in reducing violence in Iraq, are increasingly frustrated with the American military and the Iraqi government over what they see as a lack of recognition of their growing political clout and insufficient U.S. support.

Since Feb. 8, thousands of fighters in restive Diyala province have left their posts in order to pressure the government and its American backers to replace the province’s Shiite police chief. On Wednesday, their leaders warned that they would disband completely if their demands were not met. In Babil province, south of Baghdad, fighters have refused to man their checkpoints after U.S. soldiers killed several comrades in mid-February in circumstances that remain in dispute.

Some force leaders and ground commanders also reject a U.S.-initiated plan that they say offers too few Sunni fighters the opportunity to join Iraq’s army and police, and warn that low salaries and late payments are pushing experienced members to quit.
