Team Clinton, the day after the debate

Posted: Wednesday, February 27, 2008 2:58 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray
After all of the various questions and candidate disagreements from last night's debate -- over NAFTA, health care, Iraq, Russia, Farrakhan -- the Clinton camp has seized on something the New York senator herself brought up: the lack of hearings at the subcommittee Obama took over in 2007.

"Last night, we saw a glimpse of the real Barack Obama – the Barack Obama who became chair of a national security subcommittee, put it on his resume, but did not hold a single oversight hearing because he was too busy running for president; the Barack Obama who spends his time talking about change you can believe in instead of change you actually can count on. Given the opportunity to take the reins of leadership and shape two critical areas of U.S. foreign policy -- Afghanistan and our alliances in Europe -- Senator Obama has done next to nothing."

Here is how Obama responded last night: "I became chairman of this committee at the beginning of this campaign, at the beginning of 2007. So, it is true that we haven't had oversight hearings on Afghanistan. I have been very clear in talking to the American people about what I would do with respect to Afghanistan. I think we have to have more troops there to bolster the NATO effort."

Below is the entire Clinton memo...

RE: Talk v. Action
Date: February 27, 2007

Barack Obama has presented himself as a unique political figure who says what he means and does what he says.

Last night, we saw a glimpse of the real Barack Obama – the Barack Obama who became chair of a national security subcommittee, put it on his resume, but did not hold a single oversight hearing because he was too busy running for President; the Barack Obama who spends his time talking about change you can believe in instead of change you actually can count on.

Given the opportunity to take the reins of leadership and shape two critical areas of U.S. foreign policy -- Afghanistan and our alliances in Europe -- Senator Obama has done next to nothing.

As chairman of a key Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee, Senator Obama had an opportunity to assert his leadership and set an agenda for America to help address the war in Afghanistan and strengthen some of our most important alliances.

But by his own admission, he was too busy running for President to conduct a single substantive hearing of the committee he chairs. So he would rather talk about what he would do rather than do it through the responsibility he had.

Hillary Clinton doesn't just WANT the job of President. She wants TO DO the job or President.

How can we tell what Barack Obama would be like as president if he did not carry out his responsibility here?

Running for President seems like as good an excuse as any to miss some meetings.  Give me a break.
it's too late to cry, you should do more to convince voters than cheap publicity,
HILLARY, WHERE ARE YOUR TAXES?
I'm sure Patty in SD, J. Merle, Kenn and this imbecile John Doe will soon have something ridiculous to say on this last ditch effort.

Don't start crying Hillary!
How much senatorial work has Hillary been doing since this campaogn started?  Her posturing and acusations are a joke.

Poor Hillary
I really don't think the Clinton campaign gets it.  We really don't care about the small beans.  We want to hear the words "unite", and a promise to try to end partisan politics, and gridlock.

Yes, we ALLLL know she has more marbles, ribbons, and checkmarks in her policy points, but those are easily accumulated over time.  Given more time, Obama would surely have plenty of these things too.

No matter how many marbles she has saved, she can't unite anyone but hard-core democrats.  This isn't leadership.  She can't unite the country as well as Obama has demonstrated.
Ask her how many meetings she had with big oil so they could contribute to her bank account.
The American people need to shut down this Clinton Operation on March 4th. I am getting tired of their spin.
This is almost laughable, given that Senator Clinton missed 3 key votes for her own committees because of campaigning. As with the plagiarism comment, they are hoping that people won't discover that she has done the same. Stay informed Obama supporters  and don't believe everything you read about him. Also, as you keep in mind the issue of character, which is very important to me. Notice who is hurling most of the insults and who is doing most of the reacting.

I feel for them because I believe they are political junkies. I think they care about people, but mostly, they care about being in charge. I hate to say that, because I do think they are true public servants, but that's just what I have observered. I sure hope I'm wrong. The Clintons will be around for a long time and I'm sure they will do a lot of good. Whether you support Obama or not, you can't help but feel bad for them. Having said that, I agree that the country needs to go in a new direction, and the Clintons are not the ones to get us there. Thanks for the 90's Bill. They weren't all good, but not all bad. Such is life. I hope Obama's vision takes us another step forward. Nobody sees Obama as the savior of the world. Just an agent of change, which will hopefully allow us to make progress as a nation. We need this to improve our foreign relations as well our domestic ones.
I am sure Hillary was there for each and every meetin and vote etc, while she has been campaigning, too.
I know of at least one, she was not at very recently.
Clinton is playing right into the Hands of the Republicans. Even though she is as good as done she wil keep picking at Obama so the Repubs have less and less homework to do. Let it go and get out of the race. Devote the rest of this year to helping the Obama campaign, uncovering the voter problems in NY (so they do not happen in the fall, and keeping Bill out of Hooters!!!!
C,PA, Your a nut job. Your big long speach did not get to change my vote, Sorry Bush is and Idoit.
YOU TALK ABOUT GRASPING AT STRAWS.  IT SEEMS TO ME THAT MRS. CLINTON HAS ALSO BEEN NEGLECTING HER SENATE DUTIES WHILE RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT...THE SWORD CUTS BOTH WAYS.

YOU CANNOT ACCUSE MR. OBAMA FOR BEING AWAY FROM THE SENATE RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT, WHEN YOU ARE DOING THE SAME THING YOURSELF.

I AM WONDERING IF SHE SIGNED HER LETTER..."YOURS TRULY, DESPARATE, RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT".
I was also shocked to learn that Barack Obama's
mentor and pastor, Dr. Jeremiah Wright Jr., awarded
Louis Farrakhan with a Trinity chuirch award. On the church's website, www.tucc.org/about.htm, it sounds as if it is exclusively for african-americans. I have never heard of a church that only allowed one race.
Richard Cohen of the Washington post wrote a very interesting article last month called "Obama's Farrakhan Test."  I know there is a difference between pride and prejudice.  Being associated with louis Farrakhan sounds more like the later.
Desperation is an ugly place to be. Yet she brought it on herself by going with the old-style, dirty politics of lies and slash-and-burn, so well championed by President Bill Clinton.

By the way, she should stop calling him "Barack Obama" and start getting used to calling him "Mr. President".

Yes, We Can!

Her campaign is so schizophrenic. She could have brought this up to his face, but instead, like last time, waits until the next day for the claws to come out. How cowardly is that?
I wish she would just let it go, she's not going to be president and at this pace she's going to be as irrelevant as Joe Lieberman to the Democratic party.
I wish that all of the people in Ohio, Texas, Rhode Island and Vermont would stop and think just for one moment about how perilous the world has become and how we need to pick a leader that can handle the next 911 but only exponentially magnified beyond belief.

I think that Barack Obama will make a great leader - one day - just not now. We need someone who knows how to work the system and not let the system work him. That someone is Hillary.

Please consider that Barack Obama makes all of us feel good with his sermon-like speeches but extemporaneously he is not an A+ speaker. We will not be in church ever day. After the platitudes we will need to eat and put gas in our cars.

Please think of him as a good running mate for Hillary. In eight years he will be ready to lead us.

THINK  PEOPLE...The republicans are about to run a game on us. They have given Barack a lot of money to secure his nomination only to bring him down in the end on some trumped up charges from his past.

Don't turn your back on Hillary when we need her the most. THINK PEOPLE
The Clinton Campaign is increasingly desperate. This is a non-issue. Hillary Clinton ought to step aside now and work to unite the Democractic Party for the real fight against the Republicans in the fall. Her campaign has been a negative, calculating, "say-anything-to-win" old-style machine-driven effort that has entirely missed the point of this election: that serious change in the way we do business politically is imperative. She represents the old politics, K Street money, and a lackluster record of accomplishment. Robert
Interesting that it is okay for her to not act and make the exact same excuse for it (too busy campaigning to release her finances/taxes), but not okay for Obama.  Another of the Clinton double standards.
As someone who worked on the Hill for a number of years, I can say with some authority that the import of Senate Subcom oversight hearings is vastly overstated in this memo.  Some Senators love to have them, some don't, and it is usually shaped by how active the Committee is.  Given that the Foreign Relations Committee is chaired by Biden and has lots of hearing, I'd be surprised if many of the the Subcoms had hearings this year.
So why didn't Hillary show up to vote on the Telecom Immunity bill even though she was in the Wash DC area??

All three were in the midst of campaigning for the Potomac Primaries and in the area

Obama took time from the campaign to vote against immunity and McCain voted for it. Yet, Hillary ducked out this one probably because she was owed her telecom donors a favor or that it might not be politically expedient in the future.  Either way, those who live in glass houses shouldn't be throwing stones.
A  Canadian Observation ...  As per  Hillary's  comments ..

" Last night, we saw a glimpse of the real Barack Obama – the Barack Obama who became chair of a national security subcommittee, put it on his resume, but did not hold a single oversight hearing because he was too busy running for President "

In  contrast to this,  Hillary  was  too  busy   running  in this   campaign   to  come PREPARED with sufficient   campaign fund raising,  a  full briefcase  of ,  'yes  you bet,  they  will ask  for  these ',  expected required   documents ,  ie.  tax  returns...Whitehouse records of her time  as First Lady ...    READY  ON  DAY ONE?  .....

Hillary , let's  first   fill out the application in it's  entirety ,  then  maybe   just maybe   you may  be  considered  as a truthful,   sincere,  honest  ,   change  candidate  in this election!

Will the REAL  HILLARY  Please stand  up ?

I will never vote for Obama. I am a lifetime Democrat, through and through, and the mere idea
of him representing our country is sickening. If he
secures the Democratic nomination, I will vote for
the Republican candidate and encourage others to do
so as well...OBAMA HAS NO EXPERIENCE TO LEAD!!!!!

A new low for Hillary: Claiming endorsement of a deceased feminist icon--who just happened to be a Texas governor--in a Texas TV ad despite the wishes of her family. Please do a story on it:

Without reason, without logic, you back Obama. Nice! Now would you people please reach over and grab hold of your brain tissue?

Get Obama's long tongue out of your mouths, please! Go wash!
So, people still can't see through Obama's smoke and mirrors?  All talk, no action.  All generalizations, no specifics.
She has a plan, she has experience, and she WILL have a better administration put together due to the clout she has in politics.
Seat Michigan & Florida, throw in the superdelegates, and she'll put him back where he belongs in the senate, where his consistuents voted him to be.
HE STUTTERS!!!  My goodness, I want a president that is a great public speaker.  He gets freebie questions and answers in debates cuz they ask Hillary first, then he plagiarizes her answers like he does his speeches!

Hillary '08!!!
Maybe Barack will get around to running his committed after he stops lying to Ohio about NAFTA!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LtbLEKHsi0

Or was he lying to the Ambassador from Canada?  It really does turn out that it is JUST WORDS!
This is grasping for straws by the Hillary campaign. Of couse to run for President, he has to put on hold a number of things. I wonder what senate committee meetings Hillary has missed during her 24/7 campaign. Obama is a calm, reflective, thoughtful and calming personality. I believe he truly is presidential in his demeanor. He is an Ivy League success story with youth and enthusiasm. He deflects whatever Hillary throws at him calmly and dismissively but respectfully. Once in a generation someone like this shows up to be heard. Remember, he has as much experience as Abe Lincoln had of his state.
TALK ABOUT SPECIOUS ARGUMENTS.I thought the president
decided and shaped our foreign policy position not some subcommittee. According to their argument, the senate subcomittees are the reason for our foreign policy disaster not Bush-Cheney. The Clinton Campaign thinks we are as stupid as they are incompetent.
Go to dickmorris.com  Hillary didn't do anything either. She has one of the worst attendance records in Congress
When will she learn that to be a leader and to become president you have to inspire and motivate people to support you and your ideas. Its not always the smartest person with the best command of detail that wins. Its the person who can rally the populace and generate a feeling of optimism and trust. History is full of smart, hard fighting, experts who lost their bid to become president because they could not inspire the majority. I wish people would spend this much time on the process when they elect their senators and congressmen.
HRC should just go away. She is near worthless, and there must be 50 other Democrats that deserve to be runninug for President, that are far more qualified than her. Many Congress members have their names posted on bills, but that does not mean that they had anything to do withj really getting it passed. She divides, rather than unites.
I know some folks are still going to go blind despite staring at the truth in the face. One would never Imagine that Saint-Obama would sacrifice opportunity to make a difference in this war( no matter how insignificant ) In the name of running for presidency. Too bad ! If It had been Hillary that's committed this type of Negligence, the media would have shoved it so much in our face, that the race would have been essentially over for her.
"Media folks be fair, So far you have not ! Present all candidates in their own merits and stop glorifying one candidate over the other.
Once again Hillary and her campaign show just how desperate and petty they really are.  She's a disgraceful loser.

Conservative Republicans for Obama!
Could someone in the press, hey maybe Chuck Todd, afterall he's a guru they say, siting on MSNBC slanting and angling for Obama with his 65%, tell me how it is that a presidential candidate had no idea who Putin's successor was, had to turn and face Hillary and let her answer for him, is still in this race? How was that not "game changing"????? How is it we now hear he won because he wasn't knocked out?? If Tim had directed the question to Obama, he would have embarassed himself in front of millions. Instead, Tim threw it out, there was an awkward pause, so she jumped in, not wanting to look as dumb as Obama. He then, being the guy who doesn't have to wrok for anything, cheated off her paper. It's Bush all over again and makes me sick. The sexism makes me sick--the discussion of her moods, her clothes, her huband. It all makes me sick, as does Obama. And then the Farrakhan question. What a fumble that was. Yet, here we are days later with the press crowing how he looked so presidential. Hey press guys--the women out here are on to you. We get it. Obama refuses to talk to you so you have to sink your teeth in somewhere and what better place than Hillary--who've you've hated since the 90's. You have single handedly ruined this election for me, and many americans. It wasn't a fair playing field. If HIllary loses the nomination so many of her supporters like me, are opting out. This should have been a year for supporting whatever democrat got the nomination. But not now. It took Tim Russert in this debate, months into the campaign, to finally ask Obama some tough questions..and Obama dropped the ball big time. I only wish Hillary had shut up and let Obama take Putin. Turned to him and said "Senator Obama, I always go first, you take it". And watched him blink and stammer. It would have been done then if anyone cared to report it that way. I'm sure the headlines would have been "Obama brilliantly fields Putin question by not answering!!"
I AM AN INDEPENDENT FEMALE VOTER OVER 70 AND I HAVE BEEN LISTENING AND READING EVERYTHING I CAN REGARDING
THE CANDIDATES AND I SUPPORT HILLARY. IF SHE DOES NOT WIN THE PRIMARY THEN MY VOTE WAS UP FOR GRABS. HOWEVER, OBAMA'S RESPONSE TO SENATOR MCCAIN'S COMMENT
ON WHAT OBAMA SAID REGARDING IRAQ WAS REALLY A "SMART
ASS" COMMENT THAT I WOULD EXPECT OUT OF MY 13 YEAR
OLD GRANDSON AND NOT FROM SOMEONE RUNNING FOR THE PRESIDENCY OF THE UNITED STATES. FYI--I, TOO, WAS OF THE "OPINION" (NO VOTE FROM OBAMA, ONLY AN OPINION) WE SHOULD NOT GO INTO IRAQ BUT WE ARE THERE SO REHASHING WHETHER WE SHOULD HAVE GONE OR NOT IS A BIG WASTE OF TIME. IS THE MEDIA SO MEZMERIZED BY OBAMA'S RHETORIC THAT EVERYTHING OBAMA SAYS IS SOMEHOW " THE SPOKEN WORD"? BY THE WAY, THERE ARE MANY OF US OVER 70 WHO HAVE MUTIPLE COLLEGE DEGRESS AND ARE RUNNING SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSES.  I AM HAPPY THAT THE YOUNG PEOPLE ARE VOTING BUT I QUESTION THEIR ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCES, WITH ALL DUE RESPECT, TO MAKE DECISIONS BASED ON FACTS RATHER THAN EMOTIONS. I CERTAINLY DON'T WANT MY VERY BRIGHT COLLEGE SOPHOMORE GRANDAUGHTER MAKING ANY OF MY DECISIONS FOR ME. SADLY, I SEE THE MEDIA REALLY HAVING A PROBLEM WITH A FEMALE PRESIDENT AND I SEE MANY OF THE WHITE MALE POPULATION HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM.  THIS IS NOTHING NEW THAT I HAVEN'T SEEN OVER MY 70 YEARS OF LIVING.  NO MATTER WHAT WE FEMALES DO, YOU FIND SOME DUMB COMMENT--TOO BITCHY, TOO WEEPY, ETC.  IT MUST BE TERRIBLE TO BE SO INSECURE THAT YOU THINK THESE TYPES OF COMMENTS ARE IMPORTANT.  YES, OUR DAUGHTERS DO CRY MORE THAN OUR SONS--DOES THIS MEAN OUR DAUGHTERS ARE LESS CAPABLE THAN OUR SONS?  NO WAY!!!DO OUR DAUGHTERS OR GRANDDAUGHTERS FACE AN EVEN PLAYING FIELD? NO WAY!!!  NOT ONLY IS HILLARY CAPABLE OF RUNNING THE COUNTRY BUT I FIND HER SMARTER THAN HER COMPETITION. THIS IS, NO DOUBT, A SORE SPOT FOR MANY MALES WHETHER BLACK OR WHITE.
The Clintons supposedly have invested in a foreign outsourcing company (one that takes jobs away from the US). Is this why they are refusing to release their tax returns? OH and PA voters would not be too pleased to see where the Clintons have invested their money.
I THINK HILLARY IS RIGHT TO NOT RELEASE ANY OF HER PRIVATE BUSINESS TO THE PUBLIC UNTIL SHE HAS TO BECAUSE THEN MSNBC CNN &FOXNEWS CAN SPREAD IT ALL OVER THE MEDIA LIKE THEY DID ABOUT HER SPENDING THE MOST ON BACKERY THEY HAD TO MAKE A BIG DEAL THAT SHE SPENT THE MOST SO WHY IS THIS SO IMPORTANT. TO THE COUNTRY THE WHOLE COUNTRY KNOWS THAT ALL THE MEDIA IS OUT TO GET HER BECAUSE HER NAME IS CLINTON AND I DO BELIEVE THAT MR OBAMA IS GETTING A FREE RIDE FROM THE MEDIA HIM AND HIS WIFE WHO JUST NOW IS SO PROUD TO BE AND AMERICAN SINCE HER HUSBAND IS GOING FOR THE PRESIDENT WHAT KIND OF FIRST LADY WOULD SHE BE
get it right at least.. 1st 8 mo he sponsored 820. then it was 152 the first year co-sponsored  427...or maybe it was 890 bills and 1096 co-sponsored..thats the problem nobody knows for sure what he's done with all his experience in government...he sure has a substantive not voted on his record....
